my 'slaying homophobia' article

Postby TaraWannabe » Sat Feb 16, 2002 2:58 pm

Hi, a while back (well, last week actually) I asked for help with finding Amber, Aly and Joss quotes for my newspaper article about the W/T relationship. Which really helped me a lot. Somebody said that I should post the article here too, so here it is... (they changed the beginning that I wrote a bit and they also cut a quote at the end)

Slaying homophobia on prime-time tv

by (me)

Some people may think that UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer is just a bunch of attractive superheros and slain vampires. But the witty show is also about the slaying of other real-life demons, such as homophobia.

The character Tara was immediately mesmerized by Willow's presence, and Willow, who started to feel for this shy woman entering her life, wasn't quite sure what she was feeling. The chemistry was there from the moment they laid eyes on each other in the episode "Hush."

Their relationship grew slowly, showing Willow's development from when she first hid her new friend until she found the strength to accept and stand to her sexuality.

"I think the way Joss [Whedon, the show's creator] developed the relationship was so sweet and wonderful," said Alyson Hannigan, who portrays Willow, in a Cult Times interview. "When some reporters ask about us they go, 'Oooh! Lesbian affair!' but I say 'No! It's just two girls who are in love.'"

When finally told, Buffy et al reacted more or less shocked but accepting, a reaction not shared by everyone in the audience.

"There were just as many voices raised in support of the [lesbian relationship] arc as against," said Whedon at the 'Bronze,' Buffy's main posting board. "[But] one post from a gay or questioning teen saying the show helped them is worth six hundred hate letters."

Amber Benson, who plays Tara, agrees. "I get the most amazing letters from young women," she told Steppin' Out. "Many women write me and tell me that they feel it's okay to be gay just from watching my character on television."

Although both actresses' love interests are of the opposite sex, their long-time friendship gave them the level of comfort that enabled them to create the amazing on-screen chemistry between the characters. Thanks to the honesty and sensitivity of the portrayal of the relationship, Buffy's cutest couple – chosen 'Hit Couple 2001' by Soap Opera Weekly – is probably the first long-term (though momentarily crisis-shaken) lesbian relationship on prime-time tv.

(There is also a picture, it is the picture from OMWF when they are in the Magic Box just before "Under your spell." The cutline under the picture is: 'Tara (left) under Willow’s spell.')
----

Okay, nothing new for anyone here, I guess. But I was glad they gave me the space and even made space for a picture.

The newspaper is called Martlet and it is the student nespaper of the University of Victoria, BC, Canada (for which I regularly work as the copy editor and kept an eye on the article during production so that nobody 'corrects' an error into it, which happened to one of my articles before).

great article... very nice to see someone going in depth to pull together a piece that will both explain the context of their relationship to non-viewers and tie it into the positiveness that has come out of their characters...

Nicely done, TW. The quotes you chose were perfect, and you very succinctly summed up this important aspect of the show and the relationship.

What did they change in your opening?

"We are in the love. We are...the in love ones. Lesbian, in love with merry-type."

yes, I'm curious as well.

Kind of an unusual name. There's hardly any except Warren Beatty and, you know, President Harding. It's probably not either of them. ~Willow in IWMTLY

Oh great article TaraWannabe! It's not easy to sum up the Willow/Tara relationship and Joss', Aly's and Amber's views and support of it in a short article, but you did it.

I actually had not read this Joss quote:

quote:

"There were just as many voices raised in support of the [lesbian relationship] arc as against," said Whedon at the 'Bronze,' Buffy's main posting board. "[But] one post from a gay or questioning teen saying the show helped them is worth six hundred hate letters."

Amen to that.

Wow, thanks for all the nice comments. I was so excited about this and am so happy to see it in print out there (the paper comes out every Thursday, except next week, i.e. this issue will be on display for 2 weeks actually ).

When I first told the arts editor that I would like to write about this and she said yes (which was great) she also said that it should only be around 300 words. This is about 350 so they actually gave me a bit more space.

My original beginning was
-----
Although some people might think that UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer has not much to offer but slayed vampires, the witty show is also about the slaying of other real-life demons, such as homophobia.
----

So they cut the sentence into two parts, added the superhero stuff and avoided to start with 'although.'

The quote I originally ended with was
---
"I hope people realize it's only a show and there's no need to be up in arms over the homosexual content," said Benson at the 'Bronze.' "Love is beautiful whether it's between a man and a woman or any variant of that combo."
---

Anyway, I am glad you like it.

Great article. I don't know about everyone else, but I love it when kitties take their interests/passions, and put it back out there, in the big wide world - it's like the kitten board becomes not just a place to meet and pass ideas back and forth, but also as a melting-pot of thoughts and opinions, which then go back out and actually have a direct hand in influencing society: People will read your article and I'm sure some will go back to the show, or maybe even go and see it for the first time - become influenced by it, enriched by it - who said society can't be a force for good, in the right hands?

I predict that the Kitten Board will be home to the kick-ass social force of the 21st C.

As long as society is ruled by diversity and acceptance, I think it can be good thing. Unfortunately, society is usually ruled by some elite who only has their own interests in mind. So, I really hope I could open some people's eyes to the beauty of diversity, and the beauty of W/T in particular.

I am glad you liked it.

I only wonder what happens to the board once the show stops?!
