Aly Kicks the Can (Location Shoot Report 11/16)

Postby BBOvenGuy » Sat Nov 17, 2001 12:35 am

It seems I have a super-secret insider source for Buffy location shoots. So super-secret is this source, in fact, that I didn't even know until about 4:15 this afternoon, when I received the following email:

quote:
I can't go to the location tonight because I have other plans, but I know where they are gonna be... if they ask you how you found out where they are, just say you saw it posted on a message board, but don't mention my name ok. If you can't go see if you can get someone else to go and at least tell us what they are up to!

1909 Stoner Ave, 16:00-23:59 tonight, 11/16

(Umm... yes, this super-secret source is someone I've met at shoots before. It's not like total strangers are emailing me. But still I didn't know this person could find out the shoot schedule, so it was still a surprise.)

Anyway, the location was once again down in the Stoner Park area near Santa Monica. In fact, the vantage point from where I was standing tonight was almost the exact spot where Tara and Anya met April the robot last year. Ah memories...

Unfortunately, for the most part this shoot was dull, dull, unbelievably dull. It was for Episode #11, and David Fury was there being the director. As far as I could tell, there's some sort of mystical invisible force running amuck in Sunnydale, and one way we find out this mystical invisible force exists is when it makes this aluminum can go rolling and/or bouncing down the street. There they were, messing around with this can that had a string tied to it, and as the cameras rolled they tugged on the string and made the can bounce this way and that. It must have gone on for over an hour.

There were also these three extra-types, two men and a woman, and at one point they were filmed walking down the street and reacting as the mystical invisible force passed between them.

I was thinking about calling it an early night, but there were a couple of Production Assistants standing there with us, and I was trying to hear what they were saying. Rumor had it that SMG would be working tonight. Then word came that Alyson had been seen working on the standing Sunnydale street set, which is a few blocks away from Stoner Park at the studio where they film the show. Then there were rumblings that Aly would be on her way over to Stoner Park for the shoot. I decided to hold out a little longer.

Finally they finish shooting the silly dancing aluminum can. The PA's and the other spectators are still chatting, but I'm looking down the street trying to see what was going on. Finally I notice someone actor-like walking around and being followed by a camera. Was it Aly? It sort of looked like her, but her hair wasn't as red as when I'd seen her last month shooting the musical. It wasn't until another of the spectators brought out her portable TV and tuned it in to the camera feed (a nifty trick, btw) that I could tell for sure.

It was Aly!

Okay, sartorial report - Long tan/brown colored coat, not duster-length but getting there. Dark gray pants, I think (she was far away). Her hair was straight, and as I said it wasn't as red as it was in the musical.

They only shot two scenes with Aly. Apparently Willow is out looking for something. She walks up to this house, and it looks like she checks an address or something on a piece of paper. Her face looks tense and drawn, as if something sinister is going on. She walks up to the house, then walks past the house and goes back toward something behind it.

And that was it. They wrapped for the night.

What's Willow up to? What's behind that house? What's this mysterious can-dancing force doing in Sunnydale? We'll have to wait a while before we find out.

But at least it was something - and in these days of no-shoot-sheet, even a little something is something.

Great report Bob, you manange to make the dullest of shoots into very interesting reports! Thank you.

I hope Willow isn't up to bad things

I would say no. These looked like ordinary Sunnydalers on the street. I doubt they even have any lines in the episode.

Before I say thank you Bob for yet another great report, I just gotta comment on this. You've been lurking here for that long and you still wondered whether you were the only dutch person on the board in your intro?? Wut? Not as if I have not been flaunting my Dutchness every other post, or did you just skip mine?

So anyway, thank you Bob for yet another great report.
Someone brought a portable tv and tapped into the camera, hee hee, why didn't she bring her VCR as well?

Great, David goes from his singing debut to directing an empty can. Joss must not have been down with his singing ability!
Who has the can? Did the crew take it or were you able to grab it?

I believe someone on the crew took the can. But hey, how'd you like Willow's coat?

Oh, and here's a pic of Warren's house, which I took on the Kitten Location Pilgrimage.

Thanks for the location report, though. Hey, maybe it was a comedy show. I can just see them: "Come on! Come on! Laugh, damn you! Oh, it's no use; damn thing won't laugh - that bloke in props has sold us a dud - we'll have to drop it in during post production."

I always love reading these after having seen the episode they were filming. Hee Hee. Makes me feel all superior actually now knowing what people were only speculating on back then. (that was with Spike's accent, BTW) Plus then I don't get spoiled by having read about it before I see the episode, not that Bob's reports would particularly spoil anything really, but better to take no chances.

Thanks to Kalita for bumping this, and to BBOvenGuy of course for all the effort to share with us a description of W/T shooting appearances you happen to catch.

I guess they filmed the indoor sequence after Aly went behind the house on a sound stage. BTW, do you remember noticing a van in the driveway by the house?

But xita, what did you mean about the mini-spoilers being totally off? In hindsight of having seen the episode, aren't the mini-spoilers accurate? And they seem totally consistent with the shoot.

BTW, BBOvenGuy, us spoiler-free folks would really appreciate it if you could put the episode number (and/or name) in the subject if you happen to know which one the shoot is for. That way we'd know whether or not it would be spoilerish before we look.

I am not sure what I was talking about cause that was like 2 months ago, when I made that post. I do remember that someone posted some "mini-spoilers" that had no source and I close that thread, I may have been talking about those.

There was a mini-spoiler thread about Buffy's hair and other stuff that was apparently an advance mention of the episode description for Gone. (Hence the "mini-"?) I thought that's what you were referring to, but I don't see how what Bob observed contradicts the mini-spoilers. Maybe there was some speculation based on the the mini-spoilers that was not consistent with some speculation based on what Bob saw? Of course, it's more clear in hindsight which were speculations that were wrong and which were actual mini-spoilers from the episode description.
