Uhh kinda OT here but just wondering Pixie_Muso did you find a copy of the 'Stuff' magazine over there?
Also another question, is 'Stuff' a big magazine over in the US or UK? I mean take 'Rolling Stones' for example that is an extremely well known magazine and I'm assuming that it would be hard to get a gig to pose for them. How well known is STUFF??

Well I don't care if some of you totally disagree with me here.... But I for one cannot look at a picture of an attractive woman (or two), and convince myself that (provided they *wanted* said photo taken, and said photo is tasteful [1]) I should somehow boycott it because it was basically geared toward a male audience.

I mean, I suppose I could look at a picture like that, and think to myself for a brief moment "hey, those girls are kinda cute!", and *then* shift my political sensibilities into gear by saying it never *really* appealed to me because I'm a lesbian and the picture appeared in some men's mag.

But I'd feel like such a hypocrite if I did that. Yet it's something that I think some women do on a regular basis.

I don't know if this is completely related, but let's take Lara Croft as another example. Lara was hugely popular with joystick twiddling teenaged boys for many years, because of her tight digital outfits and abnormally large tits in the Tomb Raider computer game. And when ppl first heard that Angelina Jolie was gonna play Lara in the Tomb Raider film, a lot said "oh yeah, it'll be every guys dream come true!!".

And then came the premiere of the film. And a funny thing happened, because the tv anchorwoman waiting at the red carpet was caught rather unawares. Why? Well, because it turned out that there were actually more women there screaming for Angelina, than men! The broadcast was quite hilarious, as the giggly host attempted to explain what she was seeing - female fans screaming for 'Lara Croft'. They had only expected men there.

To me, I just thought it was a cool moment, because it showed that Angelina had deflty turned Lara Croft from being an exclusively male fantasy, into something that could appeal to women too. Maybe not all women, but lots of young women my age (23) and younger.

After the film, Angelina was even asked about what it was like to play Lara when it was such a male fantasy thing. And Angelina said:

"Actually, I could really imagine Lara not having a lot of time for men. Can you imagine that, Lara Croft as a lesbian? That would be a shock for the boys playing with their joysticks in their bedrooms around the world."

Of course it's in fact highly subjective. For example, I find the tushy-shaking dance style so common in rap videos to be quite disconcerting but at the same time I had no problems looking at Nanci Sinatra in Playboy and finding that shoot classy and I have no issue with many French music videos that show some tasteful nudity or the scantily-covered Sarah Brightman in her latest videos (though that gold-leaf covered style troubles me a little when she sings Ave Maria).

The same can be said for beauty being in the eye of the beholder. In a Discovery Channel report a couple of years ago,it was mentioned that there is a remote region in India where women are considered more beautiful if they have more body hair, e.g. very bushy eyebrows. Of course that appreciation evolved mostly when that region was more isolated and because most cultures tend to historically find beauty in what is common in the population. Ditto for many areas of Africa where ample behinds are considered more beautiful and a sign of fertility. The canon of beauty is generally based on what's available or the suitors will be very unhappy for generations to come.

What's beautiful also changes with time and can reflect the scarcity of some material resources. For example, ample behinds were emphasized to the utmost in Europe during the late 1700s and that was reflected in the dresses of that time. During the 1500s, when so many in the general population were often on the brink of starvation, what was considered more beautiful was a type of body 'built for comfort, not speed', aptly named by some rubenesque after the famous painter.

But, to reiterate, yes esthetics and class are mostly subjective and also taught. Some quirks of taste are deeply personal and not easily explained rationally by the individual. Foe example, call me crazy but I do not appreciate the 'beauty' in so-called beauty marks. When I see a mole (or a tan line for that matter), I see a blemish and I think cancer.

/Me goes to find the Married With Children episode where Al Bundy mentions his favourite, Russ Meyer-inspired movie ("They exploded out of their bras!") while me is burping O Canada!

Okay, maybe it wasn't intended but I think some people were implying that I'm some strange sort of stalker lunatic girl who doesn't know that Amber is an actress. That's quite insulting, and anyone who knows me would find this hilarious.

When I read Amber interviws, or bios, I KNOW she's not Tara. But the fact she plays Tara, and so well, leads to me the conclusion that she must me pretty darn cool, and this is backed up by things like she writes her own films- I mean, that, to me, is seriously worthy of respect.

I srarted talking about my feelings re. this shoot because I thought it could be an interesting discussion, not to make me feel like a crazed lunatic.

Xita- I do not know Amber. I know things about her, and I have created an image, based on those facts. And I find your comment that you find that "troublesome" very hurtful. I was trying to be honest, not hide behind rehetoric or dogma (not that anyone here has done this, IMHO).

I was trying to express the disapointment I was feeling, and I was hoping that people would respond in a manner that could create some kind of... resolution within me, not to leave me feeling like an idiot for moving across from DCP and trying to talk about W/T as opposed to just writing.

I'm quite new here, and I was trying to become a part of the community, but now all I feel is embarrased and unwelcome.

Maybe saying this about a woman who is obviously very well liked on this board and respected and considered cool and groovy by a great many people here regardless of what kind of pics she allows to be taken was not the most tactful way to start that discussion *again*. I upset me to read that. And I doubt anyone thought you are a lunatic stalker girl, but reading your posts did not make me think of Tara either.

Editing to add: people will disagree with each other always, especially when it comes to Willow and Tara and the actresses who play them. I have been here for over a year now and in the beginning I was treading the grounds quite carefully unlike the rampaging I do now, what hooked me to this place was that it was so very positive about this show and relationship I love so very much. The focus was/is to be on positive things instead of negative. I like that.

This place is bursting with love for all things W/T and A/A, so if you say things -uhm- less than positive it is not surprising people will disagree, in this case especially. It is clear from the many woo hooing reactions in this thread that people love these pics and are not bothered one itty bit by the fact that Amber Benson chose to have them taken. Hmmm, I am starting to lose the point I was getting to, anyway, the fact that people disagree with you does not mean you are not welcome, it happened now and it may happen again, and it happens to us all.

Lastly, I think Xita's statement to leave out discussions about what kind of person Amber Benson is and to refrain from making judgments on who she is, was a general one, and a bloody good one at that.

imagine going into a theatre and seeing your own face so magnified on screen your pores are the size of extra large pizzas.

Alliette, I am sorry you took it personally, honestly, I responded to your post not you personally. I don't really look at names when I reply most of the time. It was an opinion on attitudes towards celebrities and not anyone personally. The last thing I would want is for someone to feel unwelcome. The board however, is a shelter for people who love Amber, Alyson and w/t. And you can see what happens when people feel defensive about any of these topics.

I have always tried to make sure that the board does not devote itself to the actresses but the show and the characters. At times devotion towards Amber in particular has come to dominate the board and I work quietly and behind the scenes to steer it back towards Willow and Tara. Celebrity is a complicated issue and I would rather not contribute to the complexity. So I don't allow any bashing of actors or characters, questioning Amber's moral character borders on that.

Anyway, you can see how volitile this issue can be so for now, in respect for Amber (who could be reading the board) let's keep your personal feelings off this thread. The moderators of the board are going to ask that the questioning of motivations stop now. We also want the debate about whether naughty pics are a good thing or not to end. We couldn't agree in however many posts, so let's just stop. If this isn't possible, we will delete posts and possibly close the thread.

Ummm, I've been following this thread from the beginning and, to this point, have chosen to avoid commenting. I'm not going to join the fray other than to quickly say I enjoyed Amber's pictures. I am a sexual being and, seeing as no one did anything against their will or did something I find morally objectionable, I have no guilt for enjoying them.

Now for the reason I was driven to post, I am very sorry, Alliette, that you feel "embarrassed and unwelcome." Don't feel like that. I'm new here too and I know that sometimes you post something and you get a response you didn't expect and it can throw you. Don't let it. I went to Borders and saw the new issue of Stuff. Leah Remini is on the cover. It was one of those wrapped magazines with the 102 sexiest women in the world. In the back it said, "Ingredients: Jennifer, Brook, Beyonce, Corn Syrup...Mia, Amber..." I bought the magazine thinking it had our Amber in it, but it wasn't her! It was Amber Brkich. I wasted 5 bucks. The only consolation is that Eliza was #28.
