Buffy the Vampire Slayer's continued greatness
There are many reasons to love Joss Whedon and the smart, funny, wildly imaginative, sharp-as-a-tack series he created. But right now I am most happy about the way the new season has treated Sunnydale's resident lesbian couple: not with hype, not with avoidance, not with a sexualized, ratings-grabbing make-out session to titillate straight guys—it just shows them going about their business. Like any couple, Willow and Tara worry about each other, share unguarded moments, kiss good morning, and snuggle up in bed at night. It sounds like a great big "duh!" to point that out, but when was the last time you saw lesbian affection treated like no big deal on prime time? [Pause here to ponder the great void.] I thought so. —L.M.-J
