Australian Conventions!?!

Postby ~KISMIC~ » Sun Oct 21, 2001 6:26 am

Hi,
Okay I was just over at the thread about the Nocturnal Convention in England, etc and I was just wondering if anyone knew of any Australian Buffy Conventions that would be happening - EVER??
I know of the Best of Both Worlds Buffy convention in Sydney that is happening in November, but that is all I've heard of!By the way is anyone planning on going to that?

ASH was supposed to be coming to a Buffy convention here is Auckland, New Zealand on 1st December, but just last week his agent contacted the organisers and told them that they beleived it was too dangerous for them to fly so his appearance was cancelled.
I wouldnt therefore be too suprised if his Oz appearance was cancelled too.

There have already been two Buffy cons here in Australia. Friends of Science Fiction (www.fsf.com.au) ran both. THe first was James Marsters and the second was Emma Caulfield. Both days were amazing and the best part is the didn't charge even half what Best of Both Worlds were going to.

FSF will be doing another two day con next year but it will be Angel not Buffy with J. August Richards on the first day and Andy Hallett on the second.

mab: Did you go to the conventions? If so do you usually know before they happen, that they are going to happen? The only time I generally hear about conventions in Australia is AFTER they've happened, and I just wanted to know if anyone kept track of them!!
So any news on the Best Of Both Worlds Convention - is it on, off?Anyone know? If it is on has anyone decided to go? I'm actually hoping that Anthony cancels because I just can't afford it, but I'd *KILL* to go to it!!
Thanks to you all for the info!!

I did go and I have the photos with both James and Emma that prove it :-) The reason I knew they were on is I've been going to Star Trek conventions and they advertise there. Plus I'm friends with a couple of the organisers which helps too :-) I usually find out about the cons around 6 months in advance so yeah I keep track of them.

If you are interested in more info email me at: mab81@primus.com.au and I can fill you in on the goings on at the moment.

Oh and Tony is definitly off he doesn't want to travel in light of the events in the US but Best of Both Worlds have said they may have a replacement guest but I doubt that they will get one.

Tony (Anthony) has officially cancelled! I sent an email to BOBW asking them about it and they sent a reply back saying that he had cancelled. They said that they were trying to get a replacement Buffy guest but it's just over a month till the convention and yet if people have already bought tickets there really isn't a way for them to know - nothing about it is up at the website- and also would ANY of the Buffy people be able to organise their schedules in a months time??

Hi Kismic & mab

Won't repeat the not-so-nice language I just used to discover "Tony" isn't coming

Especially as I have a day ticket ( $A145 )

This makes it interesting ( re: bad ) for 2002, as apart from the "Angel" visitors in May, the excellent Amanda Tapping from "Stargate-1" is due next November....

All now are suspect....which also means people will now NOT buy tickets until the last moment, putting already expensive Australian conventions in more strife .....

I also saw Emma and James, mab, and it was terrific, wasn't it !!!!!

Actually this sort of thing happens a bit in the Aussie multi-media convention circuit. It makes it harder to get people to come to a convention and ends up costing us all. At least with this convention they have had the moral courage to admit that the guest is unable to come. I've seen ones that don't admit it until the day arrives and people have travelled thousands of kilometers to attend.

Bones, You had planned on going? I've been looking for people who were going for a while now, and you know, you're the only one I've found - lol and only now do i find that out, after Tony's cancelled!!
I have a feeling that BOBW hadn't planned on telling anyone that Tony'd cancelled, the only way I found out was by directly asking them in an email!!It wasn't up on their website or anything!! And can I just tell you how EXPENSIVE it is going to be for me to get over to Sydney for one of these things!! Theres the ticket, the airfare/bus/train (whichever), accomodation...It goes on, I worked out that it would cost me AT LEAST $350.00 WITHOUT accomodation.,...Anyway enough of my bitterness!!
So does anyone know how often these conventions happen? Is it a regular 'once-a-year' thing?!?

Kismic, this may help:-

Coming to Sydney ( Subject to them actually showing up ).........

Nicholas Brendon..aka Xander, scheduled 6-7 April 2002( www.bobw.com.au )...Tickets not on sale yet......

J August Richards--"Gunn"/Andy Hallet--" The Host" ( both from Angel ), one guest per day over weekend May 2002....Tickets approx $A75 per day....( www.fsf.com.au )

Also, "Buffygirl" ( from Hannigandotcom )thinks they are trying to get Emma Caulfield to replace "Tony" for next month, HOWEVER THAT'S STRICTLY A RUMOUR AT THE MOMENT.....

Finally, to the powers to be of the Kitten Board, I,er, promise to start shortening my posts and stay more on topic

I know what you mean, for once I'd like ANY star to go to other places that aren't Sydney or Melbourne - say Adelaide, for example
Though, then again, maybe I should just be thankful that they even come to AUSTRALIA!

Hmm just wondering if anyone knew whether because next years BOBW convention is now going to have - most probably- both Nicky and Tony, will the ticket price be upped?

Hi Kismic

OK, thanks to Buffygirl at Hannigan.com, Ive just learned that JULIET LANDAU is "Tony's" replacement ( WOO-HOO !!!! ) at the Sydney convention.....

I doubt an Aussie convention could afford two of the stars at once so I think "Nick" will be the main drawcard.....

And the price should be about $A150 per one day at convention......

Hey guys...sorry people I hadn't seen this thread until now...I've been kinda busy...

I am actually involved with the FSF conventions that brought James Marsters and Emma Caulfield (and Brian Thompson) here this year and yeah, we have two one-day conventions next year on May 18 (J. August Richards) and May 19 (Andy Hallett). For more info as mab said try www.fsf.com.au or you can e-mail me: spellgal@hotmail.com

I have no idea what the other organisations are doing though...I'm too busy with these ones to keep track!

And in answer to ~KISMIC~ there are a few stores in Sydney that have a good range of Buffy stuff...you could try Galaxy bookshop in the city, or Kings Comics in the city or Fox Studios.

And how long have you known that your girlfriend's Tinkerbell?

In Sydney, Phantom Zone has a fair amount of Buffy merchandise (comics, cards, figurines, etc.) I knw that one store is located on Anderson St. in Chatswood. Also, some Target outlets carrie Buffy stationary, carry cases, safe-keep boxes, etc. You can also go to Warner Bros. stores. They still carry Buffy goods too. The one located one level 3 n Westfield - Chatswood has pencil cases, stationary, boxes, watches, etc. You'll also find these items in places you'd never expect also. Yesterday, I bought the Season 3 part 2 boxset in Woolworths-Food-For-Less and also saw the BtVS watch.

I hope that helps.

i feel like i've mentioned this before, but in Melbourne, the best place IMO to find Buffy and any other sci-fi or cultish merchandise is at 'Minotaur' on Elizabeth St. in the city. They have the dolls and all the books, mugs, cards, videos, dvds... etc etc etc... too many to mention

Also, there is a shop in Hawthorn on Glenferrie Rd called "Card Heaven", they stock Buffy cards, but more importantly they sell individual cards, as well as stocking odds and ends of other Buffy Merchandise.

Okay so the Best Of Both Worlds Nicholas Brendon Convention is either going to be in Melbourne, Sydney or Canberra. It's most likely going to be in Melbourne though. So just wondering if anyone is still planning on going?
