Dancing Down the Streets of Sunnydale (Shoot Report 10/4)

Postby BBOvenGuy » Thu Oct 04, 2001 5:10 pm

Today the Buffy crew was on Culver Boulevard in Culver City - just a few blocks away, in fact, from Wolfram & Hart, aka the Sony Pictures building. There was nothing Wolfram & Hart-ish about the shoot, though. This was strictly Sunnydale.

When I got there, the crew was busy setting up along a one-block length of the sidewalk. There were people milling around everywhere, including a girl carrying a UC Sunnydale notebook and three guys dressed like janitors doing a dance routine with big push-brooms. Hmmm... could it be that they're shooting the musical today?

I circled around a small park where the trailers were sitting, and that's where I found... Shanie! There were other fans lurking around as well. As we stood there, we saw Anthony Stewart Head walk out of his trailer. For those who are fashion-conscious, he was wearing a dark green shirt and... uhhh, I can't remember what color his pants were. Next came Nicholas Brendon, wearing a pale yellow-green shirt with these rust-colored maple-leaf thingies on it and green cargo pants. He also had a brown leather jacket that he wore during takes.

We circled around and crossed Culver Boulevard, where we had a full view of the action. ASH and Nick were there, as was Emma Caulfield, wearing a gray sleeveless dress. There was also this guy running around in a burgundy baseball shirt and a blue baseball cap (oh yes, and pants, too, but again I wasn't paying attention to them). It was none other than... Joss! And he was busily trying to get everything in place.

They were only working on one shot in all the time we were there, but it was an incredibly complicated shot. Giles, Xander and Anya walk down the street. At the start of the scene, Xander says, "It's a nightmare! It's a plague! It's like a nightmare about a plague!" Then he says something more and Anya tries to interrupt him, and he replies, "And my eyes are not beady!" or something like that. We couldn't hear any more of the dialogue, but as they walk down the street, they pass a woman singing to a traffic cop who's writing her a ticket, a couple dancing and then the three janitors with the push brooms. Several other people walk in and out of the shot as well.

As I said, an extremely complicated shot. Lots of different things that could go wrong. In one take, a loud truck rolls by. In another, the camera runs out of film. In another, Joss doesn't like something about the dancing janitors or the singing lady getting a ticket. Nick was having a lot of his trouble with his lines, too. One time he whipped off his leather jacket and whapped it against the ground in disgust. Another time there was much loud cursing.

Still, Nick was also friendly when he wasn't feeling frustrated. At one point he saw us (Shanie and me, plus this other woman and a young woman from Finland who I'd met at the Willow Street shoot) and he gave us a wave and a "hang loose" sign.

Oh, and there will be PICTURES! Ironically, this was one shoot where I could have gotten away with my regular camera and big lens, but I didn't bring them. I did have one of those little disposable cameras with me, though. I shot half the film today and saved half for next week's shoot at Kenneth Hahn Park, so if all goes well I'll have pics of both by the end of next week. Fuzzy pics, in all likelihood, but pics nonetheless. Best I can do until I get my own digital.

All in all, another fun shoot. The musical looks like it'll be a real hoot.

Well, we have two chances for that on Tuesday, april, since there's a day shoot and a night shoot. Then again, they may be finishing up the musical this week. Time will tell.

My disposable camera is a daylight-only one, though, so I'm hoping Aly and Amber will be at the day shoot.

Bob pretty much said it all.

I'll have pictures as well; they're getting developed in the morning and I'll upload them by afternoon. Like Bob, I ironically didn't have my telephoto camera (except that his is much nicer than my Olympus zoom thingie) with me that day. All I had was my APS Canon ELPH LT that gives new meaning to the term "wide-angle," so all actors in the shots will be pretty teeny. I got some nice panoramic views of the street though. It is a really nice looking block, definitely very Sunnydale.

Also a few shots of the trailer area, and a gazebo where another woman had told me they'd supposedly filmed a scene earlier. She'd been there for a while, and made a remark about Emma having changed outfits, which possibly corroborates with what her friend had told me about them filming a scene at the restaurant at the end of the block earlier in the day. (The long following shot Bob described went almost the length of the block, but stopped just before they moved in front of the restaurant, which is orangeish-tan and has a thatch roofing over the patio area.)

At the opposite end of the block (where Nick, Tony, and Emma started walking at the beginning of the scene) there's a furniture store in a lime-green shade. I noticed a large billboard covered with flyers hanging on the wall--String Cheese Incident posters among them. An alley runs along the rear wall of that building, and there's a pair of shiny chrome double doors, trimmed in purple with small diamond-shaped windows inset; the Bronze perhaps?

At one point during a take, I think I heard a line of Xander's as "Giles, you gotta make her stop!" or "Giles, you gotta make it stop!"

Oh . . . and the dancing janitors reminded me very much of the way-cool broom routine from the show STOMP.

Oh I cannot wait for the pics. Really, I can't.

These reports are great as always. Thanks Bob and Shanie, I was sort of considering going unspoiled for the musical ep. Heh, so I should not be reading this should I?

Sounds like its going to be brilliant . . . but of course I knew it would be anyway! I like April's suggestion of a moonlight serenade - although one of Spike serenading Buffy would be fun too!

Thanks for the reports! I love reading them - its like I'm there too . . . only I'm here . . . if you know what I mean!

Looks like we're going to get one. Janna of smgfan.com reports that Buffy and Spike were doing a night shoot on a cemetery location last night. She almost got to see it be filmed, but then they closed the set.quote:

They'll be in the Culver City 10-4-01 folder.

I haven't captioned them (except for one) at this point nor have I finished renaming them, but I figured y'all would want to see.

Like I said, mine will be up around this time next week, together (I hope) with shots from the Tuesday shoot in Kenneth Hahn Park.

Welcome, and I do try. Unfortunately much eye strainage from teeny little people in pictures.

They're all captioned now, and I did my best to point out key people in the various shots.

As I said in the other thread, Kodak disposable cameras really really suck.

Nevertheless, here are a few small and fuzzy shots of mine from the October 4 shoot.

First up, the dancing janitors rehearse their number:

Next, Emma, Nick and ASH prepare for the scene:

Joss (in the burgundy shirt and blue hat) tells the cast how he wants to do the shot:

Finally, the three stars walk down the street with the SteadyCam in front of them:

Next time, digital for sure...

I always let the Security people know I'm there, and I usually ask them where the best place to watch from is.

On a public street like in this case, there's really not much they can do to close the shoot off. Places like Rosedale Cemetery or the private ranches up in Santa Clarita where they go sometimes are another story, though - you usually can't get in there.
