Postby april » Thu Sep 27, 2001 7:25 am

thanks to Salix for posting this info in the daily thread. woo and hoo!

i can't seem to get the old U.S. DVD Update thread to work, and this is exciting news, so here you go:

This is from the SciFi.IGN.com web site. Article is here: http://scifi.ign.com/tv/7602.html

Buffy Slays DVD
US fans, your patience has been rewarded.

September 26, 2001

Well, kids, looks like we can finally answer the second most popular Buffy question regularly submitted to the Bug-Eyed Monster and its crack staff of researcher-bots: When is Buffy coming to DVD?!? (And if you must know, the #1 question involves Alyson Hannigan's phone number.)

According to DVD File, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: the Complete First Season will finally be gifted to patient US viewers on January 15. Extras include a full length audio commentary by The Man himself, Joss Whedon, on Welcome to the Hellmouth. There are also three Joss interviews on six episodes ("Welcome To Hellmouth," "The Harvest," "Witch," "Never Kill A Boy On the First Date," "Angel" and "Puppet Show"), yet another interview with Joss and David "Angel" Boreanaz, a Buff trailer, the original pilot script, photo gallery, biographies and DVD-ROM weblinks.

The whole package will run you $39.95 for the three-disc set.

ah, i know exactly what i'll be asking for as a christmas gift now...

How about Groundhog Day instead?
Seriously this is good news for those who chose to wait. Not me by then I trust I will have the first three seasons from the UK and waiting impatiently for season four on 17 Mar 02.

I think that the only difference between the regions is the Joss Interviews and this may actually refer to the interviews on the region 2 disks by another "name" or rather description.
As for the cost remember this is just for 11 episodes not the full 22 of a standard season and that US DVD/CD/Books etc are always cheaper than Europe. I seem to recall I paid £35 for my season 1 set including postage. BUT - that was over a year prior to the US, so I am willing to pay the extra. BUt I suspect that once the "Wal-mart" effect takes hold here in UK (as was in papers today) that prices across many ranges of items will fall - I suspect that DVD's will be one as eventually the EC is going to take a look at it as they did CD's and stamp on it. Walmart could definitely exploit that for their price war. In EC we are already penalised by the mere creation of different formats (as are the rest of the non-region 0 places) which stops us getting films on DVD for some time. Lets face it TV DVD's are the only thing we get early.

good news and bad news regarding the S1 DVDs. the good news is that you can preorder them on amazon.com! here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/searc ... 86-3408105

the bad news is that the above report appears to be wrong: the set retails for $59.99, not $39.95. amazon is pre-selling them for $47.99.

but is that going to stop me from ordering them? nooooooooooo!

See, this is why girlfriends have credit cards. This is why you have a girlfriend. Heh. Excellent. And here's me bemoaning the 'no Buffy on DVD in the US' thing all the time...

Thanks for the tip.

just letting everyone know that the list price at amazon.com for the season 1 DVDs is now $29.98, instead of $47.99. i just got an email this morning notifying me, so those kitties that didn't preorder them because they were pricey...maybe now they're more affordable. have fun!

I'd prefer it if they brought the release date up that lower the price. Then again I'm horribly impatient regarding Buffy...
After such a wait, I have a right to be don't I? =P

Ah well. You should never complain about cheap! ^^

Just to warn people not to get thier hopes too high, because the transfer is really bad and grainy. Season 2 is even worse its still grainy and those interactive menus are really annoying.

Well I don't think the US ones will be too different from the Aussie ones, and I'm quite happy with them The pictures look great, and I like the interactive menus actually Come Thursday I'll have season three as well

I am confused though as to why they're bringing out Angel here right after the Buffy season three ones. It would make more sense to bring them out with season four to fit the timelines, cause now we're just gonna have confusing crossovers with no start/end quote:

Personally I have no problem with the DVD's as presented here in the UK and I would assume that they come from the same quality of master. The quality is absolutely fine on all episodes, sound is good too, just watching "I Only Have Eyes For You" I actually picked up the whisper on the DVD version that I missed on several viewing on TV/VHS that much better explains why Giles thinks the ghost is Jenny. So quality wise I have to say yay!
The menu's for S1 and S3 are considerably less annoying than those on the S2 DVD which were fun the first time you saw them but after that they do get annoying but that is S2 not 1.

See this is just putting bad ideas in my head.

I already have the Buffy videos, but now that I have a DVD player and I see this thread I'm sorely tempted to buy the DVDs.

Wait! . . . Christmas, and my birthday is next January . . . Hmm, okay maybe its not a bad idea after all!

Definitely worthwhile Molly IMHO. Afterall just how much rewatching can your video's take. I know mine are getting a little... worn. The extra's are pretty good too. I will admit that some of the commentaries cover the same ground quite often (the different people remembering the series in general from a slightly different perspective rather than the specific episode) but Joss's are definitely worth it.If there was no other special features then I would be happy with Joss's commentary on WTTHM/Harvest and Innocence. Marti Noxon's commentary on What's My Line is also great. If you can afford them go for it. Personally I shall record them new seasons from Sky and then go straight from there to DVD this time, cutting out the VHS entirely. In theory S6 Buffy and S3 Angel are due on R2 DVD as early as December 2002... though personally I think that might get pushed back some. The R2 reported release dates are listed in another thread which I forget the name of.

I would recommend everyone get CometCursor. I usually go to Amazon first for my shopping but CometCursor pops up and gives me a list of cheaper options.

I got the season 1 box set DVDs for $23.75 from Playcentric.com because I had CometCursor.

It does all the work for you, doing all the searching for bargains on a particular item.

I highly recommend it. www.cometcursor.com

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I'm going on 24 hours without sleep and I just couldn't get my eyes to focus long enough to read the whole thread...

Anyway, I know that the tape formats are different between the US and other countries, does the same hold true for DVDs? If not, can't US purchase DVDs from other countries or something like that? If there is a difference (and still not understanding why there is a difference at all), is there a converter for DVDs that would allow US fans to play DVDs from say the UK?

I'm excited about season one coming out on DVD, but lets face it, I want all the Buffy I can get my hands on and if I can order it from overseas I'm there :-)

Okay, I'm going to pass out now

DVD works on a region basis. I forget the actual number but Euro and US are different and willnot play on a standard DVD player. There are some DVD's released in region 0 which any player can play. It is also possible to modify a DVD player to play any region but this will invalidate any warranty that you hold. It is not illegal (at least not here) just means they will not fix it after you do it. As for available converters I have no idea. Sorry.

My DVD player is the Playstation 2. I saw a disk that you put in the console and it lets you play region 2 disks. I don't think it would screw with the warantee because it's only a CD. It's made by Sony so I guess it is legal. The disk is like $40 so I want to know if it will screw with my $300 machine before I buy it. If anyone's heard of this please let me know.

Question: do computer DVD players play any region DVDs?
