OT - But I'm a Cheerleader

Postby Wonko » Thu Aug 23, 2001 12:09 pm

Just letting any interested Kitties know that this is available to buy on video and DVD in the UK from this Monday (27th.) I've heard about it but never seen it. The URL at Blackstar is http://www.blackstar.co.uk/video/item/7000000064546

Their description reads...

quote:
Megan thinks she’s cheering for the same side - but her parents thinks she bats for the other side!
Megan has got it all - she is popular, pretty, a model student, and is dating the captain of the football team. However, the cheerleading teenager is accused of being gay by her religious, over-zealous parents. They pack her off to a sexual reorientation camp, not realising that it is “camp” in more ways that one! What Megan’s parents hoped would set her on the straight and narrow is a revelation to her, and a breeding ground for her burgeoning sexuality…

I'll get it for...well, for the lesbians I'm so shallow.

Mods, do delete if this is pointless or innapropriate

I saw this movie in July and really enjoyed it. I loved the way Megan crashed the graduation ceremony.

This was such a sweet flick. It brings a smile to my face even mentioning it.

Love this movie. It's kinda campy, but so sweet. Natasha and Clea are terrific. Think I'm gonna have to go watch my copy tonight.

I just saw this on HBO and I thought it was terrific! The soundtrack was great, too - especially the song by Tattle Tale, "Glass Vase Cello Case" that they played during the love scene. It reminded me of the music from "When Night is Falling." Really beautiful!

Here's a funny/awkward situation for you:

I was talking to my girlfriend's little sister (who had no idea I was Gay, let alone her sister, and with me!) about porn (better not to ask), and she said "You should see this movie called But I'm A Cheerleader, it's really funny! There's all these Gay people and lots of sex!"... Her sister said admonishingly to her "That's not porn, Nicole! You idiot. That's just sex in a movie."

I couldn't figure out whether she was recommmending it on the basis of the Gay stuff or the sex, but it was awkward nonetheless. I did my classic "Oh, Gay people... oh hahah.. yes... erm..." backoff line, trying to give the impression that it didn't relate to me at all.

What I don't understand is, if she thought a movie with Lesbian sex in it was tolerable, how come she was offended by the W/T kiss? She was all "could there be any more tongue? Eww!"... confusing. Or maybe just confused!

I must have missed the tongue in the W/T kiss. Funny... I'll have to go watch it another hundred times to determine this.

Cheerleader is very cute, if extremely heavy-handed. I thought the satire could have been a lot better, but it's still a great movie.

I'm just a sucker for two girls kissing.

Hmmm, there may not have been tongue (in this take anyway ), but the was *THE* spitstring, about which we had an interesting scientific debate back then. It can be found in the thread archive of The Nether Realms.

Garfield, the 'Line of Saliva debate' probably still rages in some far flung corner of the universe...

As for the movie; I haven't seen it and desperately want to. Not much point in buying it though. Does anyone know if it's available on rental at all? Blockbuster can be so intimidating at times you see, and I need to know before I ask...

Tommo, it should be available to rent anywhere around, if not now, then within a few days. I for one, bought it at Blockbuster when it came for sale previously viewed. The movie itself was a poor excuse for a satire (It starts of great, a biting satire skewering the idea that homosexuality can be cured like an addiction, but soon goes flat, turning into a bubbly romance. The movie itself seems to have trouble finding it's feet.), solely because of a badly written script, but I had to get it because Clea DuVall and Natasha Lyonne are two of the most talented young actresses working today and I am a big fan of their work.

Thanks, Tree. I'll go search for it next week then, with due blushing and muttering as the Blockbuster employees look on with amusement. Sigh. Still gotta get that whole 'I'm a dyke, so what?' attitude down in the real world...or at least, in video shops...

Oh there is no debate about the spit string. It is there, the debate is of course whether you find it appealing or not. Some people didn't find it too appealing, me... sigh yes!

I liked but i am a cheerleader a lot firt go around. It doesn't replay as well. But I am about to see it again, I bought the dvd. I'll have to see if I still feel the same way. Clea is a hottie in it though especially at the club. And I love Natasha, she's just great, always.

hehe! I was wondering how you would feel about this movie Xita. since we disagree so much on the other movie. I have to agree Clea is a hottie! I love it personally.

I totally loved this movie (although Diana thought I had completely lost my marbles ). It was kind of campy but that's what makes it funny. And gods know, I loved Rupaul in her attempt at doing the "straight" thing. Eddie Cibrian is such a cutie and he was stark raving mad as the reorientation camp's son (who was SO gay, btw ). It was hilarious and worth the two bucks I spent renting it.

Lol, I thought Eddie Cibrian's dancing/gardening was worth the money. He was hysterical.

By the way, to all of those "Clea is a hottie" Kittens, the film John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars was just released today featuring Clea. I haven't seen it yet but have heard enough about it to not reccommend it to anyone not in the market for gory B-Movie blood-baths. But just to let any Clea fans know who like me, have gone through withdrawawl not seeing a new film of hers in about a year and a half.

*giggle* What was even funnier was poor Rupaul was so hopelessly attracted to him! Try as he might, couldn't keep his eyes off of Eddie's buns Did anyone else notice a couple of cast members from Hook in this movie? I was mildly amused at that for some reason.

I heard that the UK version had more to it then the US version, that it was edited to recieve an R rating instead of NC-17. If so. does anyone know if we can order the UK DVD here in the US. I know it's two different regions, but a girl can hope.

As I recall the debate was about from whom the string of saliva originated, and I said it was Willow, and you said it was Tara with a little bit of Willow thrown in, and you are wrong because I am right and you are not. Hah!

And what what what? Clea Duvall and RuPaul are in this as well? Oh yeah, I am adding this one on my ever growing list of things to see.

Yes, the film was edited to recieve an R rating. It was discussed many times at another message board so I'm a seasoned pro at this. Unbelievably, it was nothing harsh, just stupid things that homophobes at the MPAA had problems with.

1) Jamie Babbitt, the film's director, was asked to submit a lighter version of the love scene between Graham and Megan because the MPAA thought she was trying to put something over on them.

2)She was also asked to remove a shot of Graham's hand grazing over Megan's stomach, which at the time, was covered by her nightgown. (This information was given by Jamie Babbit herself, but I find it contradictory because there is a shot left in the final version of Graham's hand passing over Megan's bare stomach.)

3) She was asked to remove an "offensive line" in reference to female oral sex (I think everyone knows what I'm talking about.) and loop in another line.

Those are the only real substantial changes forced upon the movie. As far as alternate versions on the UK DVD, someone did mention something about there being an extra scene that was deleted from the film. Something about a bunch of people sitting around singing the cheer that Megan wrote. They mentioned Ione Skye was in the scene and that's why she is listed in the "Thank You's" at the end of the film.

The UK version is Region 2 and PAL. If I find a deal on a PAL Region 2 DVD player and a PAL tv I just might spring for them. Of course, I'd probably have to sell both cars to get them...

I'll ask my Scouser friends for info about getting those players here in the US at the pub Sunday when I watch Newcastle v Sunderland and Man Yoo beat Aston Villa... Liverpool won the UEFA Super Cup today! Woo Hoo! oops... sorry... no football talk here...

I'll post any info I can get about finding UK-compatible equipment here in the US for all of us that want to watch the UK movie releases and BtVS DVDs.

To join the deafening “Clea is a hottie” chorus… I love her tough/tender persona in this movie. She plays it perfectly. And that black shirt she wears in the bar – mmm, mmm.

Though this movie was ravaged by several critics, I really liked it. It was cute and campy. It’s message was simple and true. You can’t help who you love.

My one criticism. What lesbian bar has Julie Delpy cruising teen-agers? And where can I find it?

------------------
Well, now that came out a lot more lesbian than it sounded in my head.

Cheerleader was a cute film - another fun little one I always liked is called "It's in the Water" - but my affection for that one could be colored by my 9 long years in Texas.

Oh my gosh, I am so psyched to see this movie. I plan on renting this very soon. Hee, hee

And about the spit swappage between Willow and Tara in The Body. I have watched it over and over and over and didn't see ant spit string. Then the other day an email buddy of mine sent me a tape which happened to include the kiss scene and there it was...spit string. Hmmm, why wasn't it viewable on my tape...could there be a conspiracy...was my areas epi altered...or was it just weird tv reception. I guess I'll never find out. But Woo Hoo I finally get to see it.
