Amber ("Tara") Benson, fresh off the popular Willow and Tara oneshot, strikes out on her own with a tale from the French Revolution. This Slayer tale is drawn by Ted Naifeh, the distinctive young artist of Gloom Cookie from Slave Labor Graphics and this summer's Nocturnals from Oni Press.

OOH YAY! I am so excited! I like the words the popular W/T oneshot, maybe they'll make more. This rocks much. She was telling Terry Moore yesterday about this comic.

Here's the rest of the info on Tales of the Slayer from darkhorse

You've heard rumblings about this; now I can give you all the details. November 28, Dark Horse will release Tales of the Slayer, an original trade paperback featuring stories of Slayers through the ages, all by writers (and one star!) from the show, and drawn by some of comics' finest talents.

The cover, pictured here, is by Tim Sale, the artist behind such recent masterpieces as Batman: The Long Halloween, Superman for All Seasons, and the current hit, Daredevil: Yellow. This cover was the result of meetings between Joss and Tim. As usual, Joss had a very specific idea of what he wanted, and Tim knocked it out of the park. Tim and Joss will also collaborate on the second story in the book, featuring a medieval Slayer in a very sunless world. The first story in the book is also written by Joss, and it features the Primitive, seen previously on the TV series, and soon to make a cameo in Fray. This story is drawn by Leinil Francis Yu, Marvel wunderkind, one of the most exciting young superhero artists. He's finishing up an exclusive contract with Marvel, and his first new work away from them is also his first work for our company.

Jane Espenson marks her return to comics, joining one of the greatest storytellers in the industry: P. Craig Russell, artist of Dark Horse's Ring of the Nibelung series. Jane's beautiful story is artfully told by a real master of the comics form, whose work in the last twenty-five years has shown comics to be capable of all the subtlety and grace of any other medium.

David Fury, whose previous comics work is limited to one brief and hard-to-find collaboration with Ryan Sook in a TV Guide promo, gives us one of the longer stories in the book, featuring a Slayer from the Old West. David teams with Steve Lieber, artist of the much-lauded and award-winning Whiteout series from Oni. Steve was Joss's first choice for this one, and David and Steve have come up with a unique look for this spaghetti-western-styled tale.

Rebecca Rand Kirshner, whose previous comics work is far from mainstream, having contributed to the Harvard Lampoon during her days there as a student. With her alternative-comix background, she wanted a REALLY different look to her story. So we've hired Mira Friedmann, Israeli cartoonist from the Actus Tragicus group (see the Top Shelf website), who's bringing a truly unique vision to this book.

Doug Petrie was the first of the Buffy TV writers to do comics with me, and so I teamed him with an artist of respectable vintage: Gene Colan, who's worked for every company around, including the great EC Comics of the1950s, is drawing a story that was tailor made for him. In the 1970s, Gene worked on a little book called Tomb of Dracula, in which he created a vampire slayer named Blade. So Gene's returning to the '70s in New York, and an African American vampire Slayer. And Doug's revisiting familiar territory too: He's telling the story of Nikki, the Slayer he wrote about last season. The one Spike killed, and from whom he took his famous black leather. This is a real tour de force, some of the finest work from Gene's long and distinguished career. That sounds like hyperbole, but wait till you see it. Gene's on the money here. He was the first artist to commit to the project; Doug told me the story he wanted to do, and I told him, You know who'd be perfect? I knew Doug was a fan, since the scripts to his Ring of Fire graphic novel featured references to Gene's work. Gene, who'd previously worked with me on a Curse of Dracula series a few years ago, accepted, and was glad he did, later saying that there was something magical about the script, that once he read it he knew exactly how he should draw it. Expect to see these two teaming up again before long.

And the book is wrapped up by a final story from Joss, joined by the whole Fray team, as the future Slayer looks back over her heritage. So if you feel like diving into three new stories from Joss and contributions by the people he works with daily--plus a fantastic team of illustrators--look for this book in November. Or ask for it for Chrismas. It's 96 pages of beautifully drawn and colored adventure, done exactly the way Buffy fans like to see it. And I don't mean an imitation. This is the real thing.

WOW this is great news, Amber is so talented is there anything she can't do?

I really hope that there's another W/T comic in the near future, with what has happened in the Buffy comic (W/T smoochies) I can only dream of the good stuff we would get in this one

this is so awesome! look at that, all of these buffy writers and... amber! i tell you, it's only a matter of time before she gets to write an ep...

i was going through all of my old comics tonight, deciding what to keep and what to get rid of. i was thinking that it had been a while since i'd really done that much collecting, because i haven't been excited about anything for a while. but maybe this will be it! so much buffy goodness in the comic world right now.

Tara (et al):
Since this is described as a 'trade paperback', you're more likely to find it at a bookstore than a newsagent.

Of course, a comic store is your best choice, but a bookstore should be able to rder it for you as well.

April, I agree wholeheartedly. I think it's only a matter of time before Joss has words with Amber and asks her to co-write an ep.

Okay, how much do I love Amber Benson, she just seems to have totally unbounded enthusiasm and talent

Maybe her story was inspired from the cut they made in her MKF story at the beginning of Family

Ooh! I like Ted Naifah even if I wasn't too hot on Gloom Cookie. I can't wait to see her story!

That's so cool that Amber digs the comics.

Willow's Puppy, maybe other cast members aren't as creative as Amber. I'm not saying that they're not, but you know, not everyone is a writer.

Although some fanfic wants to suggest otherwise...

I hope either Jane's or Rebecca's stories (or both) feature slayers who don't live the Western world. I can't imagine demons avoid Asia, Africa, and South America, so it would make sense that the Watchers would call one in those continents sometime or another. I mean, there was that one in China during the Boxer Rebellion, and I assume the Primitive takes place in Africa, but it seems that the slayers are unrealistically (yeah, I know vampires aren't real either, but whatever) always called in the West, and more often than not, in America, which just seems Eurocentric and weird to me.

The Book of Fours, by Nancy Holder, pretty much has them spread out over the world.

And has there ever been a British Slayer? I can't seem to remember there being one. Mind you, with the way Brits are portrayed on US tv shows, she'd probably be like a strange hybrid of that woman from the Watcher's Council and Gwendolyn Post.

"Ah, excuse me...I wonder if you'd mind terribly...ah...could I stake you now? If that's convenient for you, of course. Don't wish to offend in any way..."

Tchah!

I would guess that the medieval slayer would be British, seeing as I generally associate medieval times with Britain.

And I can't even think of any other British people in American TV, although I'm sure I'm just being forgetful. I feel like I watch a lot of TV.

The only thing I am looking forward to more than this book is Season 6 of BtVS. Oh, and the syndicated reruns on FX. Oh, and the release of Chance. But that's it.

The stories I am most looking forward to are Amber's, of course, and Doug Petrie's. I thought Nikki was way cool, and I love stuff that takes place in New York in the '70s.

You mean the "whole exciting middle part with the French Resistance"? I thought that "the French Resistance" referred to those who resisted the Vichy government and the Nazi occupation during the Second World War. I could be wrong. Anyone know?

The first thing I thought of when I heard "French Revolution" was Buffy's implication, in OOMM, that Marat had been killed by a vampire: "I agree that Marat wasn't a real martyr, but the death in the tub...the neck wound, all that blood, just a little more fangy than knifey." I wonder if that will come up in Amber's tale?

Regarding non-Western Slayers...in addition to the Primitive and the Chinese Slayer, there is also the "Korean chick" mentioned by Sid in "The Puppet Show." Still, if you consider all of the Slayers either shown or mentioned on the show, including the two at the beginning of WTTH, 5 out of 9 are American. I wouldn't mind seeing a little more cultural diversity.quote:
