DISCUSSION REVISITED - S5E15 "I Was Made To Love You"

Postby BBOvenGuy » Wed Jun 27, 2001 9:28 pm

Okay, the show's only half-over here in LA and I still have to do the physical therapy on my shoulder, but I just had to bring this up.

"The Look" is not in the shooting script.

quote:
TARA
It's that girl again.
(to Anya)
She's still looking for "Warren"? Weird. It's been, like, all day.

WILLOW
There's something strange about her. She talks funny.

ANYA
Some men find that appealing.

TARA
I just hope she finds him.

XANDER
Somehow I don't think a girl who looks like that is gonna be lonely for too long.

WILLOW
Yeah. I mean, maybe this Warren guy is gone, but maybe there's some guy she's neglected that'll pop up right when she doesn't even know she needs him.

AND IMMEDIATELY, WE'RE WITH

SPIKE AND BUFFY

Was this mentioned the last time we saw this episode? I forget.

I don't think it has been mentioned. And it is not just the look (I assume you mean Tara's) that isn't there. Willow checking out April and doing the world's worst backpedal after Tara's brief pissed off look, wasn't there.

Well, I am ever so happy it was in the ep. That scene amused me to no end, and it is nice to know that good stuff has been added instead of cut out as has happened to them often enough.

I am not critizising anyone btw, every W/T scene we have seen has been precious and wonderful.

While rewatching this and being hopelessly tickled over the now-classic jealous look, it suddenly occurred to me that in between this and Tara's "You thought Dracula was sexy?" from the season opener, we were so being set up for "Tough Love." It fits right in with Tara's insecurities.

Shanie, oh yeah. In retrospect, cute jealousy scenes were a set up. So you know right from the beginning of the season that this would be followed through on. I think I will watch even more carefully next season.

I think it fits in neatly with the subtleties of the relationship though. Given that Tara was already gay and Willow previously wasn't (at least not openly acknowledging it) it's quite natural that Tara would be insecure about Willow's preferences. I guess having her check out another girl might have seemed amusing at the time, to Tara maybe. Although The Look is perfectly within the realms of jealousy. And I like it. Jealousy is a healthy part of any relationship, I think when it gets obsessive it's unhealthy.

And I like that Tara gets jealous over Willow. It's real.

And it shows how much Tara cares about Willow, too - when she's that possessive. I also like it that Willow is so quick to reassure Tara so she won't feel threatened. Sweet.

Beside "the Look," another favorite part was Giles playing the fatherly role in the scene with Spike. "There is NO way to Buffy." (hehe) I believed him.

My gf whacked me on the arm during that scene because she's seen me pull a Willow whenever W or T cross the screen. Made me a little more considerate after that *chuckle*

The 'spicy talk' thing kind of bothered me. I was never sure why Tara felt the need to do it. The Scoobies, as a whole, don't really have potty mouths. And I got the impression that Willow was kind of embarrassed by Tara's little outburst.

You're right, Ruth, and while I thought it was amusing and kind of cute, I also thought it was a little bit jarring. Like you said, the Scoobies don't follow the South Park school of thought when it comes to the flavor of their banter. Will did look a bit embarrassed.

But maybe now she understands a bit more how Xander feels when Anya pops up with some comment out of left field . . .

On the other hand, I thought it was kind of fun just for the sake of seeing Tara surprise everybody that way.

i for one also loved this eppy. Taras 'look' was funny, amber really does have some of teh best facial expressions on the show. This episod ei htink if you look at the whole picture shows taras insecurietes. even the spicy talk part. The scoobies do use spicy tlak while stating facts in a jokling mannor and tara usually is the shy calm collective type, i took it as tara trying to fit in alittle. and everones looks on to that i took as 'wow never thought she had it in her' like shock. thats how i took it.

seriously i think of that part like thta because me i never ever swore up until like 9th grade then bam id swear like alittle and when i finnaly ropped the F-Bomb for the first time (in a fit of range) everyone around e was like 'omigosh nikki' nad was in total shock so thats how i get that viewpoint.

gosh am i gonna hve to watch in slow mo again? i didnt see the straw thing!

I do remember that The Look being unscripted was pointed out before. I wondered then--and still wonder now--whose idea it was if it wasn't the writer's.

I hope it was Aly's, Amber's, or a combination thereof. They are so wonderful with all the little details of being in love that it certainly seems possible.

Oh yeah, Amber's facial expressions are the best. I also really laughed at the rolly eye'd look she gave Anya when Anya mentioned 'the big picture of me'. And I think the look Willow gave Tara after 'spicy talk' was very cute. It wasn't disapproving it was a look of hey isn't that so cool I was thinking the same thing, we really are meant for each other. And I also think she was a little turned on because we see 'willow-blush'.

WILLOW: ...I'd totally be blowing off classes if I was in Dawnie's shoes.

i think the way willow and tara react to each other without words - those little looks... - just shows how comfortable they are with each other. after all, they seem to be able to "read" each other through those little looks and very few people can do that. i mean, it's a personal thing, and it makes sense that two people who share so much (wicca, insecurities, beds...) should be able to connect in a way that means they don't have to speak to understand what the other is thinking.

true romance... so sweet.

Bex, you're right. And I think that's part of the reason why Willow and Tara have a 'real' relationship, perhaps in comparison to others in the show. They are able to communicate a living, breathing pairing that looks like it takes place all of the time, not just for the scenes we observe. And the whole repertoire of private jokes, little looks and understandings is another thing that makes me empathise with them so much. And Bex, yes, it is sweet.

The Look had me cracking up mostly because it made me wonder how much Willow's eye has been wandering (just in the noticing sense of course) to the good looking ladies about campus. Like tommo said, very real since it shows that Willow isn't dead after all, and her eye does still catch a pretty face now and then. It doesn't undermine the relationship at all and it was so very chuckle-worthy. I don't know if I agree if it sets the tone for showing Tara's insecurities. Jealousy being the ugly green one-eyed monster that it is, crops up from time to time. What I thought was really hilarious was Tara's very understated reaction to said jealousy. Very un-Anyalike...just a raised eyebrow like, "Ahem I am sitting right next to you, you know." My gf whacked me on the arm during that scene because she's seen me pull a Willow whenever W or T cross the screen. Made me a little more considerate after that *chuckle*

Well, I mean part of the coming out process is finally being free to enjoy the female form. Willow has to go through that. It's kind of funny. Not only were Tara's insecurities sort of explored throughout the season, but Willow's sexuality as well. You have Willow sort of finding Dracula sexy. Which, I think is just Willow being romantic again. She think anything is just romantic. Girl after my own heart. Anyway, then it goes to her making statements about her sexuality in Triangle and Checkpoint. Then to this episode where she is checking out other women. It isn't just Tara after all. Not only has she said she gay, but here's kind of proof that the female gender appeals to her. Then finally you have Tough Love where she pretty much lays it down, that she wants to be taken seriously and that she wants people, especially Tara, to give her her lesbo street cred.

Sorry, Rane... I had a feeling something like that being left out of the script wouldn't go unnoticed. I just couldn't remember.

It shows that there are several people on the set thinking of cute W/T things all the time, I guess, for them to throw that in when it wasn't in the script. Aly and Amber played it beautifully. I love Willow's goofy grin as she's checking April out. I love that The Look isn't just one look but actually a sequence of several in response to Willow's backpedaling.

All in all, one of the best W/T moments of the year... and all done improvisationally, so it would seem.

Along the lines of The Look (said phrase should, I feel, be accompanied by appropriate fanfare), I still love the conversation Anya and Tara were having about online trading just before they met April. The expressions on Tara's face as Anya rambled on were just priceless. Especially the last "oh, gods help me" roll of her eyes when Anya mentioned the huge picture of herself on the magic shop's website.

And when I saw the look on Willow's face right after Tara's bit of "spicy talk," I imposed the thought bubble "And you kiss me with that mouth?" over her head.

And I also think she was a little turned on because we see 'willow-blush'.

i think the way willow and tara react to each other without words - those little looks...

So it's like Willow's not only justifying her sexuality to the world at large, but to her own partner? Gotcha. Like it.

i dont think it's just about willow's sexuality. it may be about willow's history with xander too. i mean i'd be a little iffy if she'd cheated on the love of her life at the time (oz) with xander. those issues were resolved by anya and willow but who know about willow and tara. not that it should be an issue between them cause willow's not the one to make the same mistake again. am i making any sense?

and i did point out the look wasn't in the shooting script a while back. no one listens to me! *pout* jk....

The 'spicy talk' thing kind of bothered me. I was never sure why Tara felt the need to do it. The Scoobies, as a whole, don't really have potty mouths. And I got the impression that Willow was kind of embarrassed by Tara's little outburst.
