Buffy Cartoon's Future at Stake
Monday, May 7, 2001
Fox's Buffy the Vampire Slayer cartoon won't debut until February 2002 at the earliest, but series creator Joss Whedon already is waging a war against blood-suckers far scarier than any that his heroine will face: network executives. "I thought, 'No, we won't fight over budgets,'" he tells TV Guide Online. "But you're never not going to fight over budgets.
"They're like, 'If you want seven dragons [instead of one], you have to draw them all, and it'll cost more,'" he continues. "But I want the show to look as good as it can, and that's going to cost money."
Despite such pains in the neck, none of Whedon's enthusiasm for the animated Buffy has been drained. "We're getting to do what we wanted to - the things that you can't do on the [live-action version]," he explains. "It's slightly more off-center... whimsical."
Plus, with the Saturday-morning installments set back at Sunnydale High, Whedon now can tell the tales that he couldn't before the Scooby gang's graduation. "It's nice to go back to the well of adolescent stories," he says, "and the very basic dynamic of, Willow likes Xander, Xander likes Buffy, and Buffy can't admit that she's attracted to that Angel guy."
Although the chance to be a teenager again likely will have Sarah Michelle Gellar and her twentysomething Buffy co-stars lining up to be Chosen Ones, Whedon reveals that so far no deals have been struck. "But I'm hopeful that we can get our cast to do it," he concludes. "It wouldn't be the same without them." - Charlie Mason

I hope Joss has Willow and Tara together in the cartoon, although I know they will only be shown as friends.

But look on the bright side...we can have Jenny Calendar alive and well!

And we can look at Willow and nod and smile and completely dismiss her little crush on Xander, KNOWING all the fun dykeyness that will be in her future...and maybe even look for signs of lesbianism in Softer Side of Sears Willow!

So now i'm going to have to spend even more on blank tapes so to tape all the cartoon episodes too! Oh well, it'll be worth it . We probably won't get the cartoons down here until the year 3000 anyways!!!

Well, I'm all for Tara being in the cartoon, even if it just shows her and Willow as Best Buds, because we knew they were soulmates even before they were lovers!
But how would you fit it into continuity?

And I have to admit that I'm uncormfortable with dismissing Will's former feelings for Xander.
Remember, they were best friends, thisclose since childhood, and she carried the torch for the big lug for a lllooonnng time; I'd be more willing to dismiss her relationship with Oz, without a second thought!
They lasted, what, a year?

At any rate, it's all good; she wound up with whom she was supposed to in the end!

Once i had a dream about the Buffy cartoon, it was so strange, the whole dream was in animation. I was watching the first episode and 3 minutes into the show Tara and Willow were killed off and i was like "they just didn't want any contraversy over their relationship!"

I don't know how much i'll like the cartoon, i'm afraid it will be drained of all the adult tongue in cheek humor the series had, even in the beginning, but of course i'll watch, i fricken love cartoons.

Speaking as someone whose longest relationship lasted only two months...I wouldn't dismiss Oz so fast. He still has a place in her heart, if not THE place. Tara may be her always, but Oz is her Then, and I believe that the two of them will always be true and loyal friends.

You know. If they ever see each other again.

Does anyone know the studio that will produce the toon? Im thinking KlaskyCsupo (rugrats, almost everything nick, Duckman, Godzilla, Big Guy & Rusty the boy robot...etc.) Thats the style i picture in my head,

Uh... "Phases" through "Wild At Heart" (at least that's the way I see it) which is two years.
I still don't get why people are so eager to dismiss her relationship with Oz -- I think he was her first love, and he'll always be important to her. I don't think she's in love with him anymore, but I think she'll always love him. I can't stand this whole "you must like Tara or Oz" thing that a lot of people have... if that makes any sense. Can't I think they're both cool? Probably doesn't make sense -- it's late here, forgive me ;-)

Edited to add: Was it "Phases" or the "Halloween" one? My brain seems to have gone on holiday...

Hey Discostar!
That's who *I'm* hoping does the show, too!
They also did the Extreme Ghostbusters, Men In Black, and Jumaanji cartoons!
All had great art, and some top-notch writing!

And to clarify my feelings on the subject: I dont think we should dismiss *any* of Willows past loves- to do so would only belittling the breatdth and scope of her heart!
I'm just saying, if we *have* to dismiss her feelings fo someone, my vote would be for Oz, simply on the (shallow, I'll admit) basis that her relationship with him has lasted the shortest.

Hmmn. I have a question for the lesbians of the message board (gak, that sounds rude, sorry); I believe it when it is said that someone just does'nt "turn" gay, but was born that way; that said, my question is, can some one who is gay, completely gay, fall in love with someone of the other sex, and still be gay?
What is your opinion?
*DO* we dismiss Willows former supposed strong feelings for Xander and Oz?
What do you think?
Guy.
For the record, all I know is that I want Willow and Tara together forever!

KlaskyCsupo shows are always REALLY good arnt they?! Even w/ writting! Look what they did w/ godzilla! The movie sucked but the show was GREAT!

quote:
can some one who is gay, completely gay, fall in love with someone of the other sex, and still be gay?

I'M not a lesbian...I'm not even female...but none the less i'd like to chime in cuz i always thought this sort of thing was interesting: Can a heterosexual fall in love w/ someone of the same sex and still be hetero? hhmmm... I always felt like It was a very subjective thing. I mean, a man who considers himself heterosexuale could oneday meet another man that has everything he wants in a partner (well not EVERYTHING, you know...lol) and still be heterosexuale. It's like, If I moved to canda i wouldnt all of a sudden be a canadian would I? Id still be a New yoker; well, unless I applyed for canadian citizenship...maybe this isnt a good analogy. I'd say yes, though!

My thing is though, w/ the whole willow being gay thing is that we dont really know if she ever had any issues/ideas/feelings involving her homosexuality. I mean, we know her vampire alter ego was all lesbo-y but other then that we dont know. Which is why i could understand Tara's argument in "tough love" last week. I like to think that in the case of willow, She just happend to have met a girl that really floated her boat. I think joss should clear that up for us. We know willow is attracted to other girls though because she commented on the robot-girl that time. Its not so weird for any person to develop a "crush" on their friends, Im gay and it's happend to me w/ female friends I've had. Nothing strong or anything, but certaintly a little chemistry/attraction on my end.

Yep, they are my dream team, alright.
And I've been pleasantly amazed at how sophisticated their writing is, and frankly surpised at all the stuff they've been able to get past the censors.
I am a HUGE animation buff, and that includes anime, and I would rival anything KlaskyCsupo has done to some of the best from Japan!

TMS would be my other choice, they have animated some of my favorite Japanese AND American shows..

Beautiful Tara's Girl wrote: "Tara may be her always, but Oz is her Then, and I believe that the two of them will always be true and loyal friends."

That's a lovely turn of phrase there, BTG...I'd say you've got it just right.

JustSomeGuy wrote: "can some one who is gay, completely gay, fall in love with someone of the other sex, and still be gay?"

In a word, yes.

In a few more words: the societal pressure to conform to normative behavior is enormous. (Wow, lotta words with "orm" in that sentence.) From the moment we are born we are bombarded, in myriad ways, with the message that boys like girls and girls like boys. This message, with the immense power of societal norms behind it, is not easily circumvented...and if you look at Willow, particularly Season 1 & 2 Willow, much of her pyschology is constructed around her efforts to conform to expected behavior, to be the "good girl." Even as late as "Restless" (which explores this aspect of her psyche to a great extent) she is claiming, "I never do anything...I'm very seldom naughty," which is surprising to say the least in light of eps like "Wild At Heart" and "Something Blue." It is not surprising that, even if Willow was on some level aware of her homosexuality (and her behavior around VampWillow suggests she was), she was going to be under this enormous psychic pressure to deny it, and to divert her romantic/sexual feelings toward members of the opposite sex rather than the same sex. This is a fairly common pattern, at least among the gay people I know...they usually have at least one or two het relationships before coming out, to themselves and to the world. (Although, given the greater openness in our society since the Gay Rights Movement began, this pattern may be fading...I think more people are coming out in their teens than ever before.) And yes, these can be love relationships--but there are many forms and degrees of love. If you're gay but in denial, and trying to conform to what society expects of you, you might fall in love with a member of the opposite sex...but when you get past all the bullshit that's been thrown at you, and you fall in love for the first time with someone of the same sex...well, you know that part in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy opens the door, and the whole world switches from black and white to color? It's like that.

"*DO* we dismiss Willows former supposed strong feelings for Xander and Oz?"

No, we can't simply dismiss them. Although I think that her crush on Xander was simply a result of her strong love for him as a friend, coupled with what I described above. But there's no denying that her love for Oz was real. But to continue the metaphor I started--Oz wasn't Oz. Oz was Kansas. Tara is Oz. Get it?

Okay, I hope some of that made sense.

Yep, that made complete sense, and was very eloquint, I might add.

And I dont think it has to even apply to the Gay/Straight issue:
One can fall in love, real love, with someone, and it can even be a happy, warm relationship; then later (hopefully after that relationship ends, for whatever reason) one can fall in love and it is *THE* relationship of ones life, rendering all before it as apples to oranges; there is just no comparison.
It doe'nt mean you loved that former partner any *less*, it's just that you cannot possibly eat, sleep, or even *breath* without the one in your life *now*.
I'm I close?

JustSomeGuy wrote: "can some one who is gay, completely gay, fall in love with someone of the other sex, and still be gay?"

I can't really say. Speaking from my own experience, only: I thought I was probably gay from when I was maybe 11, 12 to when I was 16. Then I met my boyfriend, and to use a hideous cliche was completely swept off my feet. We're still together eight years later, he's still the only person I've ever seriously wanted. As for my sexuality -- I now find men and women attractive, but not on the level of feeling I have for my boyf (maybe I'm just an "Alan-sexual"). If he hadn't opened my mind to the concept of finding [i:d1c0f423ad]people[/i:d1c0f423ad] attractive, then I dunno what would have happened. Maybe I'd be gay. Maybe I'd be straight. Maybe I'd be what I am now -- someone who prefers not to see herself in terms of definitions. I think it's probably possible for someone to fall in love with the opposite sex and still define themselves as gay. It's all a matter of how we see ourselves and what we feel comfortable with, I guess. To quote someone much wiser than me: "It's not who you love, it's how." (from the tag-line for Kevin Smith's "Chasing Amy")

Uh, guys... I think the cartoon is going back even further; back to when Willow liked Xander. First season-ish.

For those of you who weren't with us then:

Giles liked tea
Willow liked Xander
Xander liked Buffy
Buffy didn't want to admit how much she liked Angel
Angel was mysterious
Cordy was a huge bitch (not in a good way)

Sticking my neck out...

Initially, when Tara and Willow became an item, I assumed Willow was discovering she was bisexual. After listening to many words on the subject by lesbians, I was nearly persaded otherwise. One thing makes me keep my original thought--VampWillow. She was [i:9fea420985]clearly[/i:9fea420985] bi. And all evidence suggests vampires keep the orientation of their human originals.

Of course this remains academic since Willow is just as obviously in love and committed to Tara.

I think the words get in the way. Gay, straight, whatever.

True story:

I used to eat crab. Had it fairly often. We'd have clambake type things with lots of crabs to shell, and I'd order crablegs at restaurants.

I don't really eat crab anymore. Lost the taste for it. Oh, every once in a blue moon I'll have it, maybe once every other year, but it's not the same, I have no desire to order it at restaurants or anything.

How do I reconcile my current feelings for crab vs. my past feelings? Did I not truly like crab before? I think my feelings were fairly genuine. I dont' know exactly what happened, I certainly tried to keep eating crab for a while after I didn't much like it anymore. I searched for, you know, really good crab. No dice.

The thing is, we have no words in our society for someone who used to really like crab but not anymore. Society doesn't care, the church doesn't care, my parent's don't care. I could go back to eating crabs tomorrow, loving them more than ever. I could swear off crab altogether, vowing never to have it again, pitying those who still eat it. I could be at a party, in just the right mood, and have some crab, and then wonder vaguely the next morning what I was thinking..and still society wouldn't care. Because it's a really minor, silly thing.

Sexual orientation is a big deal. Folks care. But I'm not sure the process is all that much different (I mentioned my crab weirdness because food and taste in food is as mysterious and individual and fundamental to being human as sexuality is, even though no one cares if I eat crab or not, it's still a very basic, universal human thing, hunger and appetite.)

Identity, action, and feeling are like three sides of a triangle.

Identity, the way you label yourself no matter what your parents say, or what folks keep assuming no matter how many times you protest.

Feeling, the internal knowledge, whether you like it or not, of what your heart and body are seeking.

And over there in the third corner, Action, the person actually in your bed, the letter you finally write and send, the Talk that thanksgiving, the gentle refusal or the enthusiatic assent.

So...are you gay or straight? And is this judging by actions? Well, except it's silly to say you're not gay just because you haven't been in a same sex relationship yet.

Okay, go by feeling...except, feelings change weirdly when you least expect them to, and maybe you act on them, maybe you don't.

Okay, how about going by Identity? Except..once you state it, or it's imposed on you...your parents probably aren't ever going to come up and say "Have you ever considered this whole gay thing? We think you should try it."

I know I'm being silly. (And if I annoyed anyone, really, I was being silly, I apologize in advance).

A good friend of mine is in agony right now bacause after being a very proud, outspoken lesbian for nearly twenty years, she's fallen for...a guy. So, she's confused (and not a little annoyed) about her feelings, trying to figure out what to do with her identity (and getting teased a little by her friends, yes we suck sometimes), and paralyzed into in-action (she wants to sleep with him badly..on odd numbered days anyway, she's horny and cranky and conflicted.)

len, that was a very eloquent and evolved exposition on our fluid attractions. Humans are so beautiful and complex and strange. And its true, we fall in love with a person, not a gender. Potentially, all of us could become genuinely attracted to someone of the opposite sex that were normally attracted to.

However, I think true change within our sexuality is a rare. I subscribe to the sexuality on a continuum theory. For some people, theyre gay/straight, period. Thats it for them and change is 99.9% impossible. Other people are more in the 80-75 range. And for some people, itll shift from 90 to 45you get the picture.

But I also believe its unwise for people to assume that if you try hard enough, or love long enough, you can change your sexuality (I see dangerous ex-gay undertones, not from any posters here, but just in general). Pining away about a gay/straight acquaintance will probably always end up in unrequited-ville.

Right, so, Im not sure if this made any sense. And what it has to do with the BtVS cartoon, Im not sure. Im just letting the old mind ramble

Jeez len, is there any subject you can't wax eloquent on? I suddenly find myself thinking deeply about gustatory choices and crustaceans....

Oh, and having finally joined the Yahoo chat club and seen the too-cute pic of you and that kitty, I'm reiterating my offer of trying really hard to be straight if you'll go out with me.

And yeah, words get in the way, but what else have we got? As far as Willow goes, I accept her choice of words: she says she's gay, therefore she's gay. Ultimately it's academic, as she and Tara will be together forever.

Imperfectly, I agree that change, true change, is rare. I bet some number of people are essentially misidentifying where on the continuum they fall though, and therefore get suprised on occasion.

Clearly, trying to force a change generally leads to heartache. There's another thread about that floating around here...

I know there was another thread but I can't find it.

from scifi.com

Buffy Toon Stalled?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer executive producer Marti Noxon told SCI FI Wire that the proposed animated version of the popular UPN series may be stalled. "The animated series is still in the works," Noxon said in an interview at UPN's winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif. "I think that ... there's been some problems with Fox Family TV. So I'm not sure it's going to go on, ... not because of anything having to do with the show, but because I think Fox is not sure that they want to do more family programming like that. ... It's not going away, because scripts are written and stuff has already been done. But right now, the question is where it's going to end up airing."

Noxon, who is co-running the original Buffy with creator Joss Whedon, said that Whedon and other Buffy writers have already written a half-dozen scripts for the animated series. "Almost everybody except me," she said with a laugh. The animated show is "really funny. It's really charming. It's got to get on the air. It's definitely one of those animated shows that skews both for adults and kids. It's going to kick Spongebob's ass! Just kidding."

David Boreanaz, who stars in the Buffy spinoff series Angel on the rival WB network, told SCI FI Wire that he won't be voicing the vampire character in the animated show, which is supposed to be set back at Sunnydale High School. "Joss came to me, and he said, 'We're doing the Buffy animated thing, and you're more than welcome to come down.' And I've just been so tied up now with work that it just hasn't happened. So I don't think it's going to happen."
