Hemiola: Didn't you say something slightly different over at the Kitten Board ? Somethink like "the MTV Movie Awards are more funky so her outfit should be more punky" ? I seem to remember something like that .....

*Willow*: Don't worry - I'm sure we will have screencaps before then - Nick (Dead Dog) knows about it ... wait, you said they air in Europe ? Where ? When ? Yummy !

Warduke: Didn't somebody post them here already ? That's why I didn't - I didn't want to double-post ....

I really like her outfit after I had some time to digest - it fits the occasion ....

That MEAT pic really bugs me. Grrr. *swallows angry feminist rant*

On anyone else, that outfit would look really ugly, but Aly's workin it. Have to see it live to be sure, though. I'd better go convince one of my pals with MTV to tape it for me.

Egads...Christina Aguilera looks more like Dee Snider every day.

But ooh, saucy Aly! True, her taste in clothing makes Willow look like...uh...somebody with good taste in clothing (leave me alone, I had a rough weekend), but hey, she's always unique.

Although I think her shoes are exceeding the legal limit for strappiness.

Thanks for posting the pics Brian, does Aly ever look sexy in them. Maybe I'm in the minority but I like Aly's outfit, I think it's kind of cute.

Thank you Queen of Denial. I usually watch the MTV movie awards but now I really can't miss it this year. Yeah Aly is presenting!!!

Warduke: Yeah, my memory is kinda crappy ..... thanks for rectifying my "mistake" ....

Roxton: But it's a comfortable minority, isn't it ? I think she looks great - although I couldn't fail to notice that she seems to be going for "brunette" again - or it could be the pics .....

Dazey: There is a legal limit for strappiness ?

I wonder if this is being shown in the UK on MTV? Does anyone know?

Ruth, the mtv UK site (http://www.mtv.co.uk/) says that it will be shown June 9th at 8pm.

The more I think about it, yeah, what Aly's wearing does seem pretty appropriate for the occasion. MTV is the place to find obnoxiously tacky and overtly sexy clothing, so she's pretty much just blending in, and doing a good job of it. I'm changing my mind and giving it a thumbs-up.

(It's been a slow day, I slogged through thw whole MTV picture folder at ezuma)

I have to agree. A certain level of transgressive tackiness is pretty much expected at MTV events. Does anyone remember those...things...that Marilyn Manson and GF Rose McGowan wore one year? Yikes.

And 'lil Kim has quite the fondness for pretty much completely baring her breasts in public, I've seen her in several variations of that outfit. I think it's her sartorial "thing"...for better or worse. (worse)

By comparison, our Aly looks positively demure, if a bit mismatched. Honestly, if I set aside the outfits that are supposed to annoy me, the thing I disliked the most was the thing Christina Ricci was wearing. It made her torso look weird, and the shoulder things were weird..it was just weird and unflattering.

Not happy about the "Meat" thing either, maybe it's a brilliant subtle in-joke, but I'm not holding my breath.

Ok...I just looked at all the pics at eZuma and really...why did Lil'Kim bother? Aly is one of the better dressed people there. Although my vote would be cast for Mena Suvari who looks adorable. Oh...and what the heck happened to Christina Ricci...she used to be cute. That dress makes her look like a dwarf.

All their taste is in their mouths...as my mom would say.

You know, Im not opposed to the bearing of flesh. Heck, Im all for the occasional ogle. But looking at these celebrities with their my outfit is skimpier than yours fashions, it just makes me a little sad. When did sexy become skanky? Sigh.

Though, I dont care what Aly is wearingShe still looks cute in my book.

I really think most of it isn't supposed to be sexy, but rather, startling. An outrageous outfit gets filmed and photgraphed and there's value in appearing to be daring or edgy or insane in pop media.

These folks can do it with behavior, or with interview quotes (I mean, look at the goofy stuff Angelina Jolie spouts about her marriage every two weeks or so), or, at major public appearances like award shows, with costume.

There are a few people who I assume legitimately have utterly wretched taste, who truly beleive they have made excellent fashion choices when in fact they have not, or folks who have miscalculated on one occasion or another. For example, the Ricci outfit is, I would guess, an honest miscalculation. But the 'lil Kim outfit? I'm quite convinced she knows precisely how tacky we feel it to be, and is quite gleeful about it. Ditto Aguilera.

Thats true, len, its all about the publicity.

But in their attempt to look edgy/outrageous/starling, they start to just look the same. It becomes, just another stars midriff. Just another stars cleavage. Just another stars ass (though, no objections to more Amber Buttwait thats a different post) They defeat their own purpose with their desperate look at me, look at me mass fashion sense.

p.s. Poor Christina Ricci. Girl, fire your fashion consultantNow.

len--"transgressive"? *shudder*

I'll let it slide this time, but you start using words like "trope" and "normative" and it's over between us, got it?

And, maybe I'm a bad feminist, but the Meat pic didn't bother me. I file it under the same category as the outfits: an attempt to be "provocative." Not provoking me.

Sorry Dazey dear.

I very very occasionally will even stoop to using "paradigm", and making reference to "the state of being 'The Other'"...but I usually rein those impulses in reasonably well.

I don't want the vestiges of my college social theory classes to come between us!

Thats the trouble with some of these awards shows. So many excessively revealing costumes, they all start blending together *Were those her breasts or her breasts. Huh... Nevermind*

Ok, just to go completely way OT here, but why is it that people are getting 'upset' over the MEAT picture, but the fact that other people are laughing @ mya, pink, lil kim, and christina being called 'whores' seems to go unchecked?
Isn't it part of the 3rd wave of feminism to reclaim our sexuality--ie, we can dress how we want to and sleep w/whom we want to and not be told that it's "Not lady like"?
Also, weren't there people here drooling over Aly in FHM magazine in schoolgirl kitsch without blinking an eye about it?
Also, in regards to the MEAT pic-is it ok for women to be objectified(in one way or another) for women then it is if it were men doing it(which, I think we can assume the MEAT is making reference to)?
Now, I'm not trying to take people to class about this, but a little consistency OVER hypocrisy would be nice.

-Shannon(who should probably spent a WEE bit less time reading the discussions on her 3rd wave mailing list)

Banshee, some of the people who saw the "Meat" picture were angered by it and said so. Some of the people who saw it were annoyed by it (which is how I would have characterized my personal reaction).
And some of the people who saw it didn't seem to be particularly annoyed. Some folks were appalled by the outfits of 'lil Kim et al, others just found them goofy.

I suppose if the exact same folks who protest the "Meat" picture also drooled over FHM pics, there could be a discussion of double standards, but even in the case of the Aly FHM shoot, there was a diversity of opinion, some folks indicated disappointment with Aly, others didn't mind a "sexy" Aly photoshoot per se but didn't like the "schoolgirl" theme, etc. There have been some significant, sometimes heated discussions recently about this sort of thing, appreciation vs. objectification.

And of course, very similar experiences can strike the same people very differently, for subtle and hard to explain reasons. For example, I have generally don't much mind viewing all manner of violent action movie content, gunfire, explosions, blood all over the place...except for the times when it really bothers me.

So, in terms of a gut level reaction, I think it may be possible to look at one picture and have a healthy, sex-positive drool, so to speak, and look at another right after and be offended by the demeaning objectification. And there have been images I've felt to be sexy or attractive one day, in one mood, that I've gone back later and thought "God Len, how broken was your taste that day?", if not "God Len, what a jerk guy you were that day." Some folks are pretty disciplined in thier consitent approach to such things, but I'd guess most of the time folks call it like they feel it at the moment.

So, is American Pie 2 meant to be the comedic adventures of dyslexic cheerleaders?

I'm not sure this current bit of sub-discussion has much to do with the logic behind the word spelled out itself Ed. They could have been at a Texas Cattlemen's Association jamboree or something. But a picture showing four young women holding up signs spelling "Meat" has a sort of independently comment-able sociological identity regardless of the reasoning behind it.

Maybe implying they were standing in the wrong places? Perhaps caused by a dyslexic photographer...

I suppose we'll get the chance to find out what it means in the broadcast. I didn't get enough information from the byline to tell what it was supposed to mean other than the women's initials of their first names, or whether someone just thought the word "meat" sounded more funny and strange than something like "team" or "mate".
(although "mate" would have actually been funny)
