Love is not always easy
Part 1
It’s hard. Looking back and only being able to remember bad times. Times when darkness surrounded you and no matter how hard you looked, you could never see the cloud’s silver lining. When you sat in your room for hours, scared to move in case you did something wrong and would have to be punished. Forever being taught the same lesson, over and over again and wishing for the day you’d be taught a lesson that would leave less bruises.
It’s hard. Not being able to get past the pain of it all. Not being able to forget the memories that haunt your dreams and are constantly following you. Making you long for the day when you’ll no longer have to look over your shoulder to make sure you’re safe and realise you’re not. The day when you’ll feel safe. When you’ll no longer wake up from that same nightmare, screaming. Waiting for the day that will start the rest of your life.
Tara: Faith, we’re out of those little chocolate doughnuts.
Faith: What is it with you and those lately? You’ve been craving them for weeks.
The brunette’s head appeared around the side of the kitchen door.
Faith: You’re not pregnant are you?
Tara laughed and closed the refrigerator door.
Tara: Not unless I have a serious case of amnesia and at some point forgot I’m gay and have a wonderful girlfriend and took a trip down to boy’s town.
Faith laughed and moved into the sitting room of the basement apartment she shared with the blonde.
Faith: Ugh, horrible place. No girls.
Her Aunt had given Faith the apartment when her father had finally been locked away. It wasn’t something she talked about a lot anymore. Brought back bad memories. He had been found guilty on three accounts. Grievous bodily harm towards his daughter, grievous bodily harm towards his wife and man slaughter. Faith’s dad had killed her mother in an angry rage, something she hated him for. After everything with Tara and her father, the blonde needed a place to stay, and Faith had offered without hesitation. She knew exactly what Tara had gone through, she’d been through the same, and she knew that Tara needed friends more than anything at that point. So, she’d invited the blonde to live with her and at first, she had refused, not wanting to be a burden, but Faith had managed to convince her. That was four months ago, and since then, they had become very close. Every night, Willow, Buffy, Xander and Oz would come around and they’d spend hours just sitting around talking or watching movies. In fact, over the last couple of months, they’d all become very close and protective of one another.
Faith: I’ll get some from the store later.
Tara: Thanks.
Tara made her way out of the kitchen and sat down next to Faith.
Faith: Are the guys coming tonight?
Tara: I don’t know if Buffy’s coming tonight.
Tara grinned and Faith hit her over the head with one of the pillows.
Tara: Why don’t you just call her and ask her?
The brunette shook her head.
Faith: She’d think I have nothing better to do than sit around and think about her.
She caught sight of Tara smirking and glared at her.
Faith: Don’t you dare.
Tara: What?
Faith: You know exactly what.
A banging on the door halted the conversation and Faith got up to answer it. Opening the large, metal door, the brunette smiled when she saw the two girls in front of her.
Faith: Will, Buffy. Just what brings you to this part of the neighbourhood?
Willow completely ignored Faith question and walked past her, making her way to Tara.
Buffy: Little Red Riding Hood did nothing but moan while we were at the mall, so I decided to cut our outing short and give her something to shut her up.
They turned their heads to find the redhead too busy kissing her girlfriend to moan at all.
Faith: Five points for the blonde, your plan worked.
Buffy: Unlike some people, my brain and me get along.
Faith: Hey! That was low.
Buffy laughed and sat down in one of the free chairs as Faith closed the door.
Faith: Will you two get a room?
Willow and Tara pulled apart slowly and the redhead looked at Faith.
Willow: You’re just cranky cause you don’t have anyone to snuggle with.
Tara: But she does.
All eyes rested in the smirking blonde.
Buffy: She does?
Willow: What? When? Who?
Tara: Freddie.
Willow: It’s a he?
Willow turned her head to the brunette.
Willow: I thought you liked girls!
Tara: She still does.
Faith: Tara, shut up.
Buffy: But Freddie’s a guy’s name.
Tara: It is.
Willow: Is anyone else here confused?
Faith: I’m warning you, Tara. I’ll never forgive you.
Tara: And she sleeps with him every night.
Buffy: What?
For some reason, Buffy’s face had paled a considerable amount.
Willow: You sleep with him?!
Buffy: Ev-every night?
Faith: Tara, please? Will you just stop?
Tara held her hands in the air and stood up.
Tara: Fine, fine. Forget I said anything.
She disappeared into a room, emerging seconds later carrying something. Faith’s eyes widened and she lunged at Tara, who dodged her and threw the object to Willow.
Willow: What the-?
Tara: Meet Freddie.
Willow looked down at the teddy in her lap and burst out laughing, unable to control herself. Faith picked herself up off of the floor as the redhead tossed the teddy to Buffy.
Buffy: Oh Faith, he sure is a handsome one.
Buffy giggled as she straightened Freddie’s bowtie and Faith glared at Tara.
Faith: You are so dead.
Buffy: Oh leave her alone. I think it’s cute.
Faith: Uh huh. Can I have him back now?
She made a grab for the teddy, but Buffy was too quick. She threw Freddie to Willow, who caught it and grinned.
Willow: I don’t know about you, Buffy, but I’d like to get to know Mr Teddy a bit better. Find out if he’s good enough for my best friend.
A short game of “piggy in the middle” followed, which involved Faith chasing Freddie as he flew back and forth between Buffy and Willow.
Faith: Give him back!
Buffy: No way. I wanna know if you really sleep in the-
Buffy was cut off as Faith made another grab for her flying teddy and caught him.
Faith: Game over.
Buffy: Aww.
Willow: You’re no fun.
Faith made her way into her bedroom, passing a grinning Tara on the way.
Faith: I hate you.
The blonde laughed and Faith shoved her out of the way, scowling. She placed Freddie down onto her bed and walked back out into the sitting room, looking directly at Tara, who had moved back next to Willow.
Faith: Okay, blondie. You want to play? I’m game.
Tara eyed the brunette and Faith merely grinned.
Tara: Faith….
Faith: Since Tara’s been living here, I’ve found out a lot about her. For instance, she talks in her sleep.
Faith slowly walked further into the room.
Faith: One night, I woke up and came into the kitchen for something to drink. Tara has a habit of leaving her bedroom door open and I heard her talking. So, naturally, I went in to see if she was okay and do you know what I heard.
Willow: What? What did you hear?
Tara: Willow!
Faith: Did you guys know Tara had a crush on Jason Donavon when she was little?
Tara: Faith!
Willow: The Australian guy?
Buffy: Jason Donavon? Oh Tara…. It’s shameful!
Buffy started to giggle and was joined by Willow not long after. Tara turned to her girlfriend.
Tara: I was 11!
Willow: Yeah but…. Jason Donavon?
The redhead’s giggles turned into fits of laughter.
Tara: You think it’s funny?
Willow: I do, actually.
Tara: Okay, fine.
Tara’s head swivelled around to face Buffy and Faith.
Tara: Faith, did you know Willow used to have a crush on you
Willow’s laughter instantly stopped.
Willow: Tara!
Tara: Whoops.
A smirk appeared on the brunette’s face and Willow tried everything to avoid looking at her.
Faith: Willow, I had no idea. Maybe you and me should slip away for a while.
Faith waggled her eyebrows and Willow’s face turned as red as her hair.
Willow: Tara has every album Cline Deon has ever released.
Tara’s face fell and Faith and Buffy fell into hysterics. The blonde glared at her girlfriend.
Tara: Willow still keeps a picture of Jodie Foster under her pillow.
Willow: How do you know that?!
Tara: It’s a girlfriend’s job to snoop.
Willow: Tara used to believe she was Wonder Woman.
Tara: Willow thought Spider-man was real!
Willow: Tara had every Scooby Doo episode on tape!
Tara: Buffy still sleeps with her blankie!
Buffy: Hey!
Tara turned to look at Buffy.
Tara: Sorry. I-I couldn’t think of anymore for Willow.
Faith: And you laughed at me for sleeping with my teddy!
Buffy huffed and got to her feet.
Buffy: Tara used to have nightmares about a huge grasshopper that went by the name of “Chuck”.
Willow’s bottom lip began to tremble as she tried to stop herself from laughing.
Tara: Buffy has every song Cher has ever recorded.
Buffy gasped and Faith collapsed into fits of laughter again. Buffy and Tara looked at the two out of control girls and grinned at each other.
Tara: Anyone want to see Faith in a dress?
Faith’s laughter subsided and she quickly regained her composure.
Faith: Tara, don’t you-
Tara got up from her seat and walked towards the desk in the far side of the room. She opened the draw and pulled out a pictured. She tossed it to Willow, who took one look at it and burst into laughter again. The picture was of Faith on her eleventh birthday, wearing a pink, frilly dress and a pink bow in her hair. She passed the picture to Buffy.
Buffy: Well, would you look at that. Isn’t she sweet?
Faith snatched the picture from her and scowled at Tara.
Faith: Buffy, did you know Tara used to have a crush on you?
Tara: Faith! You promised you wouldn’t say anything!
Faith: And you promised you wouldn’t say anything about Freddie.
At the mention of the teddy’s name, Buffy, Willow and Tara began to laugh again. Faith just shook her head and walked into the kitchen.
Faith: If you think you’re all staying her, think again. I don’t want you here.
Buffy: Aww, Faith….
Faith: Don’t “aww, Faith” me. It’s your own fault.
Buffy sighed.
Buffy: I wanted to get to know Freddie.
Laughter once again filled the sitting room.
