I`m sure I heard this on the radio last week.

The presenter & his studio guests were discussing choosing names for children, when he read this email from a listner.

The emailer said his cousin & cousins`s wife told their older daughters they could choose the name of their new born sister.

The girls came up with a list that included Xena, Britney & Buffy. All rejected, before they grudgingly accepted Willow.

Somewhere in Britain, there`s a little baby named after one of our gals!!!


The moral of this is never make a promise to children that you don`t intend keeping.

If your parents were fool enough to let you name your sibling, what would you lumber the poor kid with?

Well, Willow isn't too bad of a name.

I have a thing for "different" names. I'm a Lauren, and all through elementary school, middle school and high school, there were 4 of us. And to make matters worse, we were all Lauren Elisabeths (though I was the only one who spelled Elisabeth with an "s"). And it's only recently that friends have started calling me things other than just Lauren (yes, La is one of my nicknames, so are Laurie and Laureninininin), but every year I always had at least one class with another Lauren. If I had the chance right now to name a sibling, I would want to give them a name that would be their [b:0dcd401aa1] own[/b:0dcd401aa1], if it were a girl, I would probably choose Piper or Finn or Winter or Lotus or Minji ... I don't know what I'd name a boy ... Piper or Finn or Winter or Lotus or Minji maybe! If I were [b:0dcd401aa1] actually[/b:0dcd401aa1] naming a child right now I might put more thought into what wouldn't get him/her teased in the future ...

As being a Dane, I would call my children something really Danish, like for a boy, Sren, and for a girl, Ditte.
But Willow is not a bad name either...kids here just have some trouble saying English names, coz they are not used to the sounds, and that sets up some limitations...

There are so many non-"american" names that I love. But the hugest problem is always the way people pronounce it. There are a lot of Korean names that I find really beautiful, but English speakers would end up pronouncing it funky, so you do have to worry about things like that, or the poor child will be saying "no, it's pronounced ----------" their whole life.

Another name I love is Chiara, which would be the Italian equivalent of Claire. (pronounced with a hard "k" sound, I suppose I could always just spell it Kiara)

I wouldn't want my kids to be teased because of their names either. I have a kid sister, and she can't pronounce Willow, she calls her "Willer" or something like that...
I just wouldn't want my child to have a name that only adults can say...

Yeah, totally. I've known some people who would say their name with whatever correct pronunciation, and then the other person would say it with a more American pronunciation and then they would say "yeah, that's fine, that's how most people end up pronouncing it". I don't want my kids to have to "settle" for a pronunciation. If it's supposed to be pronounced one way, i want it pronounced that way.

hi everybody!
I am sooo glad to be back on the board today.
I mostly lurk,but I totally missed it yesterday;there was a city-wide power outage,we had no power from 4:00 pm until 1:00 am.
I kept looking over at my dark computer screen trying to will the power back on!
As I mentioned in the Angel thread,I tried my best to get to tape it: I got my Dad's power converter and hooked it up to the car and ran an extension cord into the tv.
Not enough power.

Tried calling my aunt across town
no power.

I even tried to rent a room at the Holiday Inn on the other side of town and bring a vcr with me
they had no power.
It's not like i'm obsessed or anything

I finally ended up just watching it;on a portable,two inch black and white tv in a pitch black,searingly hot house.
But it still was a great episode!

Good morning all. Hummm names the game today cool. Well I didn't get to name my sibling but I did get to name both of his girls. The first one named Caton Elizebeth was for our Grandmother, Caton was her middle name, they call her Catie. The Younger girl was more complacated.
She I named Sammantha Erin, who in a very roundabout way was named for me. The very first AD&D campain character I had was named Sammantha and she was everything I could not be, so when later in life after I discovered Wicca and found it time to choose a Magickal name i choose Samantha as it seemed the thing to do. Thus Little Sam was kinda named for me

Well there are loads of people named Tara here in Ireland, but never met a Willow.

I love the old Gaelic names - Grinne, Saoirse, Fiona, Meabh - are probably my favourite girls names.

Obviously other than the obvious Tara and Willow, I also like Cordelia (from King Lear, well, ok Cordy had an influence as well) and Caitlin. And for boys - Jack and Harry, nice simple traditional names!

Hmmm... I like Callista (from a character in some of the Star Wars novels) and Zenobia (from a short story by James Morrow). My favorite boys name is Julian.

Hmmm....I love the name Cailet, for a girl. It's from a book by Melanie Rawn. But I don't think I would actually name a child that. I also love Hebrew names. And after teaching for 14 years there are certain names I would never give a child because I am just so sick of them! Daniel, Michael, Benjamin, Sam, Sarah, Rachel.

I love names that are pronounced totally different from the way they look! I've always like Irish names, for girls I like : Siobhan and Niamh. As for a boy I love the name Aiden

I don't really have "weird" names chosen -- but the spellings are not the typical (unless you are Jewish).

I've always loved Rebekah and Jakob. I can't do Jacob because my brother stole that name for my nephew. I love the "k" and "h" in Rebekah.

Uhm ... odd names ... odd names ... well, I like Dani for a girl. Just Dani. I have a friend named Dani and it's not short for Danielle or anything. That's kinda neat.

Much better than my cat's names: Little One (Stinkerella), Schatzie (Schatzenmeyer Stinkypants) and Bennie (Booger Snot Nose).

Maybe I shouldn't be allowed to name (or nickname) creatures.

Well, I love this topic, personally.

My name is Dana Catherine (f), but my parents were going to name me Tndra, so that is going to be my first girl hands down, no matter what my significant other thinks.
I want to name all of my children unique names and if they hate them, when they are legal they can change it themselves.
I've always loved the Z/X names: Z/Xena, Z/Xander, Zelda. Orion, Noel, Conan, and Eleanor (for my best friend who died of cancer), are a few more.

Irony is kind of ironic.

When I was ten, my brother was born, and from the moment I found out that I was going to [i:0588d81167] have[/i:0588d81167] a brother, I decared that 1) I was going to be his best friend in the whole world, and 2) we were going to name him "Spike." My parents insisted on Anthony Michael, which I protested all the way up until the day of his birth. The kid was born with a frickin' mohawk for chrissakes. No joke.
