Lesbian of the Week Wednesday Insane Troll Logic

Postby tommo » Wed Jun 19, 2002 1:52 am

I always find myself doing these insane troll logic topics. I'm not sure why...perhaps it's because I actually [b:8d1d1563ca] am[/b:8d1d1563ca] a troll. Heh.

Anyway, not specifically Willow/Tara related today; but it's an interesting little conversation. Some of you might note that a couple of weeks ago (or it could have been last week, sometimes I feel like I'm stuck in this time continuum and it's all actually just one very long day...) that I mentioned Zoe Tate, who surely qualified as [b:8d1d1563ca] Crazy Lesbian of the Week[/b:8d1d1563ca]. In the subtextual (or not so) messages that TV gives us, she joins the ever-growing TV lesbians who are doomed to death, madness, sadness and grief.

And I spotted another one last night. A long running hospital drama, [b:8d1d1563ca] Holby City[/b:8d1d1563ca], has had a lesbian character in it almost from the start. Last night her ex (who is a recovering junkie, no less, heh) came to her on the very day she had a consultancy interview and told her that she had an incurable tumor; therefore she had a year to live. She was off to Cairo to travel and see the sights before that year ran out. Tash (the doctor) was naturally very upset and questioned her whole relationship ethic. Basically she doesn't have one. She's stony faced most of the time and doesn't seem to hop in and out of bed with anyone unlike most of the other cast members, heh heh. Well...she's a lesbian ain't she? :rolleyes

Anyhoo, the upshot of the story was the dilemma. Does Tash go round the world with the woman she loves and share the final year of her life? Or does she take the consultancy postion and go on to a bright and shining career as a surgeon?

Watching this with my parents was a treat. Um, I think. I guessed that Tash would go off with the love of her life. My dad guessed not.

I was right.

And then my parents and I proceeded to have a whole conversation about the Crazy Lesbian of the Week (as my mother has so disappointingly adopted, sigh; for a homophobe she sure likes the naming and shaming game...). And this then led onto a discussion of gay characters on American television vs British television. I was able to mention Willow and Tara in a roundabout manner, and explain something of the lesbian cliche to them I suppose. Suffice to say, my parents are now clued in to looking at how lesbian characters (and I guess gay characters in general) are treated on television.

I felt kind of proud.

Okay, so now I've rambled painfully on...I suppose my thought for the day would be, where are the other lesbian characters? Talking with my parents, I couldn't really remember that many, and yet I know they've been there. Does anyone have any suggestions? Lesbian characters on TV? I'm not sure.

Sigh. Anyway, have a great mid-week everyone. I know I will. Interview tomorrow; football on Friday. And Wimbledon next week. It's the start of a perfect summer.

Uh, not. ;)

Alright... I'm not all good with the knowing about lesbians on TV (I don't like watching it much) but did someone mention Wimbledon??? Sigh... I love tennis!!! Being out of the loop as of now (away from home etc.), can someone give me the skinny on this year's tourney? Thanks a bunch!

Oh I'm sure once the tournament starts there'll be plenty of news in the daily thread.

People are tipping Tim Henman to win the blokes contest.

Bwahahaha.....

Right.

Mmm, I watched Holby City as well. I just ended up rolling my eyes and switching off. Did she actually go in the end or not? My whole family are clued in on the Lesbian Cliche now - its kinda sweet when my dad starts having a go at people about or ranting at the TV screen.

My day is being spent on the phone with endless people. I'm trying to see if its possible to junk [i:a791d1d414] all[/i:a791d1d414] my summer holiday plans and head off to Kenya for six weeks. I've been asked to lead a team out there working with street kids, but I have all of ... oooh, a week and a half to get ready. The team leader dropped out and Rach applied huge amounts of emotional blackmail to get me to say yes. I just had to tell my Nan I won't be there for their 50th wedding anniversary - boy, did that go down well!!

Right, I'm off shopping to start collecting all the crap I'm going to need. Why did I say yes to this???!!!! Most people spend six months planning these things - I have a week!!! Argggh!

Have a good Wednesday everyone... :)

Yes, I think she actually went in the end. Because you know, instead of her ex going off and dying without telling her, she had to have the emotional goodbye and the "I've always loved you even though you took heroin and shared dirty needles with people" gratuitously heartbreaking chat. And then she did the whole chasing her down the street....

So, you've got one lesbian who's going to lose the love of her life. One lesbian who's going to die, painfully. The first lesbian has also put her whole career on hold because god forbid she'd be able to be successful and happy...

Bleh. See what I mean?

Anyone for tennis? ;)

Does Beth Jordache from Brookie count? I hated that they killed her.

Can't wait for Wimbledon! Loadsa tennis to watch, and at least BBC show the doubles matches, which I wouldn't get to see otherwise.

Ah Beth Jordache. She was Crazy Lesbian of the Week, [b:19e74c3c4e] every[/b:19e74c3c4e] week. [i:19e74c3c4e] *snigger*[/i:19e74c3c4e]

Sorry. I just don't like Anna Friel.

Not a big fan of Ms Friel meself. Did you see that awful film with Billy Connolly in it, something about wigmakers or something, and she had a brutal Northern Irish accent in it.

Doesn't Hollyoaks have an Insane Lesbian on it at the moment as well? I don't watch it but my sister was bitching about it the other day.

I think it does. Isn't she called Gina or something? I try not to watch [b:ab5d6e8290] Hollyoaks[/b:ab5d6e8290]; it's really not nice. Heh.

Remember Binnie and Della from [b:ab5d6e8290] Eastenders[/b:ab5d6e8290]? Hee.

Hmm, a wacky notion just popped into my mind (whenever not). Lingering on the word crazy, "Callisto" came to mind... With her somewhat unhealthy fixation for Xena (understatement of the century) she could have been a crazy lesbian... I mean, I can only remember her being with a man, make that god, once: Ares, and that was more to get to Xena... Ok, maybe I'm just weird, and seeing subtext everywhere (damn you, Xena ! ;) ) ... it's just puzzling...

The only long-term relationship happy lesbian couple in a television series I can come up with now are Helen and Nikki from Bad Girls... I wonder if there are more of 'm out there on tv.

Mwah I already said this in another thread, but with *one* exception I cannot remember a lesbian character on Dutch TV, let alone a lasting relationship, I did not follow that one exception well enough to know how she is faring these days.

I posted this link to Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Television Characters in the FAQ thread. It may help with refreshing memories, it has not been updated in a year though, but the major update would have to be WT, and we all know about that.

God, Binnie and Della!!! God luv em.

I guess we have Bad Girls. Tries to be positive at least. Though from the finale the other day they appear to be trying to kill off the entire cast bar the sexy Jim Fenner and his muppet prison guards.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about Binnie & Della, didn't they go off to Ibiza or something.

I haven't seen the finale for Bad Girls yet, for some reason its airing a week later here, even though its still on UTV, prob'ly a different transmitter or something technical like that! Still not too sure about the new lesbian pairing. I would like to like them, but feel only apathy towards them. They're no Nikki & Helen!

Well the lesbian doesn't have to be crazy. I mean, TV producers can pretty much send her that way (as you know they undoubtedly [b:6bc98097dd] will[/b:6bc98097dd] under the guise of "entertainment") on their own. I just couldn't remember too many TV lesbians, that's all.

And uh...would you just [b:6bc98097dd] look[/b:6bc98097dd] at my status? [img:6bc98097dd]http://216.40.249.192/mysmilies/contrib/blackeye/Eyecrazy.gif[/img:6bc98097dd]

Good Morning Kittens!

Well, I missed this last night. On Nickelodeon there was a special about a girl who had two lesbian moms. It was an educational show geared at children to teach them about alternative families, etc.

Of course, there was a homophobe morning DJ on Chicago airwaves this morning totally bashing the show. And he insinuated that Rosie O'Donnell's lesbian girlfriend ran Nickelodeon and that this type of show should not be on Nick.

I think it's a good way to open up communication. My sisters would never have ever told their kids about GLBT stuff. My partner and I forced the issue when we had our wedding. They were not even going to let the kids attend it, but my step-brothers all were coming in from out of town and were bringing all their children. My step-brothers were very excited for us and extremely supportive. I think it is still uncomfortable for a lot of parents to broach the subject of sexuality let alone explaining homosexuality.

OK, my two cents. Did anyone see the special?

Better than coffee to get me going in the morning. Course that is not in a good way.

Yeah he is an idiot and I was listening to the same thing you were this morning and thought, "Hmmm..the Kittens would love to rip this guy to shreds."

Hey KJchicago, are you going to the Chicago Kitten gathering this weekend?

Hey, all. Been a while since I've posted . . . but, even after all my promising myself that I would stop obsessing over Willow/Tara related stuff, I still find myself reading the board every day. Y'all are addictive, did you know that? So, what the hey, might as well post. :)

On the topic of the fate of TV lesbians this week - I was watching the season premiere of Witchblade, largely because my housemate was watching. I've only seen a couple of episodes before. Anyway, in the premiere, a female character compliments the main character on her eyes, with what seemed to be a clearly "hitting on you" tone. My housemate told me that the show had at least hinted that the main character might be bi, so I thought to myself, "Oh, how interesting - maybe their going to use this new female character to explore that a bit."

Then we promptly found out that character was evil, and not too long after that she was, as far as I could tell, beheaded with very little comment or concern from anybody (although that was a confusingly shot scene, at least for someone who hadn't seen the show much before.)

This struck me as all too typical.

What did other people who saw it think of this?

Patricia, on "onderweg naar morgen" I remember Renee (the redhead obviously) rolling around with a girlfriend making out like mad. But I did not follow it too well, they broke up, and somehow she ended up having a child by her dying step brother, I haven't a clue who she is dating now. Do you know of any lesbian characters on Dutch made tv shows?

Heh. As proud as I am of Post-Happy Ruth, I would like to have seen her as a "Powerful Manwich."

:lol

I would humbly like to nominate Bianca from AMC as lesbian of the week. The poor kid. Yet another TV lesbian I'd love to kidnap away somewhere safe and warm and full of onscreen lovin's.

I have been keeping track of Renee on Onderweg Naar Morgen. At the moment, she is single, but there's this teenage girl 'chasing' her. By now, she has had several gf's, at least 4, probably more :p

On Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden Isabel is very much in love with Charlie right now, but she hasn't told her yet... however, I believe there's a chance that something pretty might grow between the two of them :)

Also, on Costa, the series the characters played by Katja Schuurman and Peggy-Jane de Schepper got together in the end of last season... we'll have to wait until October, I believe before we see if that's gonna be something lasting.

Well, that's all I know for now, if anything else pops in my mind, I'll let you know Garfield :lol

btw, this is the shorter version... I had typed this HUGE post, wanted to see the preview which didn't work and I lost everything... maybe later, if I feel like it, I expand this to what it used to be before it all went awry :rolleyes

Oh the preview option does that sometimes, and the back button does not always save you, best to always copy the text before pushing any buttons, it only ever goes wrong when you forget to do so, at least that is how it works for me. Thanks for the info, I gave up on GTST looong ago, and that is one I won't rewatch, but Costa? I had no idea, if I had know I would have watched dammit.

Now that you mention it... They're going to start showing "Costa" here in Belgium. In the 'trailer' (out of lack of a better word) you can indeed see shortly two girls making out. And Kurt Rogiers saying something to the point of "The whole world is turning lesbian (because of me)..." We wish ! ;)

Probably won't be watching it either. I mean: this mentality lies as far away as possible from my own personality, standards... I'd rather have characters with an intriguing identity like Willow and Tara making love in the library, while reciting poems or something. <G>

I hate to say this, cos it means i have to admit to watching it (sometimes!!!) but family affairs have a lesbian called Kelly who is having an affair with Karen who is married to Roy, but the twist is that Kelly is being a surragot mother for Roy and Karens baby :confused

Hollyoaks (which i DONT watch, but my mate does, honestly!!) have a gay bloke but i dont think theres a lesbian, but i could be wrong.

I used to love Helen and Nikki from Bad Girls, i had a huge crush on Helen :o
It still took them 3 years and very much heartache for them to get together properly though :rolleyes

Ruth were Binny and Della the hairdressers?
