[b:5c347206ff] *Edited: This is the daily thread of 07/16/02, everyone is still free to reply to the questions in this thread of course, but for more recent daily thread things, please also check out the newest tuesday daily thread. :) [/b:5c347206ff]

Well, if it?s Tuesday, Dawn must be in danger.. only today it is online trouble...

But I kinda wonder, Willow, being the techno wonder that she is, probably has the best computer setup that we could possibly imagine. But, she and Tara are students, so monetary resources might be a little tight. She probably is doing the best that she can with what she has.......

But what about the kittens?? Just for fun, here's a chance to brag or whine about what kind of system you have. How have you made your computer(s) just yours. What makes your computer special? What quirks does it have? What 'irks' you about it, whether you can't do this, or you don't have any way to make it yours because you use someone else's computer.. or maybe, like the school where I teach, they have filters that prevent you from visiting the kitten... Yeah, the audacity of them!!

Here are some questions to get you started.. use them or lose them.. but have some fun..

[b:5c347206ff] What kind of computers do the kittens have to play with?[/b:5c347206ff]

1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination?

2. What kind of peripherals do you have? What's your favorite?

3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?

4. Wallpaper?

5. Screen saver?

6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?

7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions?

8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?)

9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)

10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.

11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?

12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer?

13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology?

14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name??

Hee, oh man, so many questions.. I just give some random information about mine, since the only interesting answer is the one to the last question.

Ok, my comp is a Windows PC, two years old but a holy thing for me, and it hardly ever bails on me, good thing. I had computers before, but just for fun, this one now I need for my university work, and I need it because I met the most incredible girl online. [i:879b885e0f] *sigh*[/i:879b885e0f]

And, yep, my PC has a name. Ladies and Gents, meet Willow :grin

The day Willow stops working I will break down and cry, I love this baby.

[b:879b885e0f] edit to add:[/b:879b885e0f] No screensaver, they eat up ressources and annoy the hell out of me. But wallpaper, of course.. heh, right now I have this damn cool pic of a BMW Z8, you know, this car that got cut in two with a giant buzz saw in the last Bond movie. Oh god, I was crying when I saw that, I think that was the most emotional scene the whole movie had to offer for me.. you can't just [i:879b885e0f] do[/i:879b885e0f] that.

*YAWN* looks like I'm yawning in all the threads today. I'm using the kitten as my break from packing. I hate packing. And I'm worried about the airline not letting me carry my way way overweight suitcases on board. Not so worried about the international flight, but I have a national flight first and the guidelines are always different. But if I'm connecting to an international flight they have to let me on with heavy bags, right ... what am I going to do? just give the heavy stuff to the desk person to carry? - sure I could put it in my carry-on, but I always end up with a carry on so stuffed full of my crap that it couldn't fit a paper clip in it. Plus, I'll probably have more than the allotted number of carryon. I hate moving to/from places for huge long extended periods of time cuz you end up with so much crap. And I already sent a huge box home! I think I'll be sending another box tomorrow though :)

Right, so on to questions about my computer. (appropriate topic for you, [b:1b31f7aeb3] skittles[/b:1b31f7aeb3]!)
1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination? [b:1b31f7aeb3] Compaq Presario 1700T laptop. With windows 98.[/b:1b31f7aeb3]

2. What kind of peripherals do you have? What's your favorite?
[b:1b31f7aeb3] um, what's a peripheral?[/b:1b31f7aeb3]
3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad? [b:1b31f7aeb3] no mouse=no mouse pad. but on the cover is a maroon sticker that says "SMILE" with a funky smiley sun design guy on it that I got in Hawaii.[/b:1b31f7aeb3]

4. Wallpaper?
[b:1b31f7aeb3] right now it's a picture of W/T from the W/T pic thread - one of the stills from New Moon Rising. It's usually something W/T related, though I've had some Angelina Jolie and SMG too. For awhile I had this picture. My host sister didn't get it. She was scandalized by the willow tara kiss wallpaper I had up for awhile. Not because it was two women per se, but more because it was kissing in general.[/b:1b31f7aeb3]

5. Screen saver?
[b:1b31f7aeb3] whatever windows thing i happen to use. not even sure exactly what it is at the moment. maybe the 3-D box?[/b:1b31f7aeb3]
6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?
[b:1b31f7aeb3] at my homestay in my bedroom. had some issues hooking up to the internet at first - korean software wasn't liking my computer and vice-versa, actually had to re-install everything cuz the korean program messed my computer up so bad the first time. but then they did it again and it worked. so i have a speedy dsl connection here. when i get home on sunday i'll have a lovely dial-up waiting for me.[/b:1b31f7aeb3]
7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions?
[b:1b31f7aeb3] i have a computer at my desk at work - i'm on it all day long. you guys are never gonna see me once i start at harvard in the fall, i won't have hours free during the day with nothing to do but quick lessons plans! (I'll still stop by for sure, just less often, like most people probably :grin )[/b:1b31f7aeb3]
8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?)
[b:1b31f7aeb3] I think my dad got our first computer back when I was in 4th grade, so I was ... 9? My dad's best friend and his partner used to own Elek-Tek (a computer store that did well in the midwest and even started to expand to denver and a couple other places before it went bottoms up, now it no longer exists) so we got a spiffy deal on our Epson. No windows back then. At least if it existed we didn't have it - went through all the fun of learning the DOS commands. Still helps me to this day every once in awhile. I was using DOS and installing programs on my own when I was 9 and 10 years old. My dad and I used to buy computer games (the long story-type ones, like Leisure Suit Larry or Indiana Jones or Maniac Mansion, etc) and play until we won it, and then buy a new one. We had a slight competition going on to see who could win it first. Though my dad didn't like playing games unless he had the "hint" book (cheat guide).[/b:1b31f7aeb3]
9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)
[b:1b31f7aeb3] I can't make it pack for me. I also can't pack while I'm on the computer. But that's okay with me :D [/b:1b31f7aeb3]
10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.
[b:1b31f7aeb3] 1)Kitten
2)apple quicktime movie trailers - i love movies and it takes a few months for movies to get here, so i can at least watch trailers and know what's coming out in the states and what I'd like to see
3)my friend's livejournal used to be another site I checked every day, until she deleted it :(
4)entertainment weekly online
5)the Kitten (hey, it's the first and last place I check every day ... besides email)[/b:1b31f7aeb3]
11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?
[b:1b31f7aeb3] uh ... not exactly an answer to the question perhaps, but internet explorer has kept me connected to the world throughout my year here, and without it, i wouldn't have found the kitten and i would have had a more boring year and i wouldn't have met so many new, great friends.[/b:1b31f7aeb3]
12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer?
[b:1b31f7aeb3] not a 'thing', more an 'occurance': my computer likes to spontaneously restart. no warning, just all of a sudden blank screen and it restarts.[/b:1b31f7aeb3]
13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology?
[b:1b31f7aeb3] i don't know ...[/b:1b31f7aeb3]
14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name?? female. definitely female. no name though. :( maybe i should give it one. my computer in college (a Mac) was Nynaeve. but i can't think of anything that fits this one yet. something will come to me sometimes

Used to use my Compaq Presario laptop, absolutely love it, but my hard drive is phucked up, so ive had to resort to my dinasour pc and its slow and big and i get booted all the time...On my laptop my wallpaper was a picture of the SF skyline at nite, since that is really my home...Mouse pad is a pic of Zion National Park...Im not a computer person really but i manage to get around ok..

My biggest wish is for a DVD player on my laptop, if i get a new one, which i really cant afford right now, cant even afford to get my laptop looked at or fixed...Ive been surfing the net for all of 3 years or so...Favorite site, the kitten board of course, i look forward to it in the morning and when i get home from work...I used to post on a butch/femme board, but not so much anymore, cause the kittens have captured my heart...

Oh, this is always fun, cause you know...I'm a geek.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination? [/b:b52d42c1fa]

I have a Gateway 1.4 Ghz Pentium4, 128 megs ram, 80 Gig hard drive, CD, CD Burner, zip drives, 19" monitor.
I also a bastard machine that used to be a 486. Now it is running a Cyrix 586 chip that I have to keep super cooled 'cause I over-clocked it.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 2. What kind of peripherals do you have? What's your favorite?[/b:b52d42c1fa]
Scanner, digital camera, printer, extra mouse for my son.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?[/b:b52d42c1fa]
I have a small stuffed cow sitting on the monitor because well it is a Gateway.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 4. Wallpaper?[/b:b52d42c1fa]
The logo from Shadow-Earth games, same as my avatar.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 5. Screen saver?[/b:b52d42c1fa]
None. I let the monitor power down.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?[/b:b52d42c1fa]
No problems, no restrictions. I am on a cable modem so things damn fast.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions?[/b:b52d42c1fa]
I don't know what it is. I use the free ones in the Stats lab.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?)[/b:b52d42c1fa]
23+ years. The first one I bought was a TRS-80 Color Computer 2. 16k memory and a 800 Khz chip that I could over clock to 2 Mhz. It had 16 colors, and no drive. I had to save things to tape!

[b:b52d42c1fa] 9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)[/b:b52d42c1fa]
I have yet to figure out how to get it to make coffee for me.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.[/b:b52d42c1fa]
1. The Other Side
2. Eden Studios
3. Monster. Hey I am still looking for a job.
4. The Internet Movie Database
5. The Chicago Tribune

[b:b52d42c1fa] 11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?[/b:b52d42c1fa]
Lots. I spend most of the day on it.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer? [/b:b52d42c1fa]
Huh...it's in the back room so I can't really hear what is going on in the rest of the house.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology? [/b:b52d42c1fa]
More Porn! No, hmmm. I make the damn things easier to set up. I used to enjoy tinkering around with computers getting them to work, now I just want to get my work done.

[b:b52d42c1fa] 14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name?? [/b:b52d42c1fa]
I guess I always thought of my computer as a her. But no name. I did call my first Color Computer (yes I had 3 total) "Frodo".

I have a plain boring computer. its a 3 yr old Compaq Presario. i'm probably going to upgrade it or get a new one, since my hard drive is almost full (too many mp3's, skins/objects for my Sims game, other computer games). The wallpaper on it right now is a picture of the ocean, don't use a screen saver (used to use After Dark).

Well my old computer was affectionetly called "Skynet", you know the super computer from the Terminator movies. The reason why is that this computer had so many gremlins hiding within it that I was actually starting to wonder if the thing was thinking on its own.

But alas, it was an old computer and had to be replaced, so now I have the "Sacred Cow", yes its a gateway. Its called that because my gf's father had one at his house that we weren't allowed to touch, so now all gateway's are sacred cows.

As for hardware specs, I have no idea. I just know that when I tell it to do something it does it with no complaints, so that's a big plus in my book.

1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination?
I use a Dell Dimension XPS B733 (128mb RDRAM, 40 GB HD) and a Dell Dimension XPS T500 (384mb SDRAM, 20 GB HD) both desktop systems.

2. What kind of peripherals do you have? What's your favorite?
2 sets Altec Lansing Satellite Speakers, Scanner, printers, zip drives, cd burner, mic and my favourite... definitely the Wacom pen tablet.

3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?
My godmom works for FedEx. I have a FedEx mousepad. Other than that... a stupid purple dinosaur beanie on the monitor (it's NOT Barney!)

4. Wallpaper?
I'm a sucker for my own wallpapers. I have one of my w/t wallpapers up.

5. Screen saver?
Don't use one. The monitor is usually either ON or OFF.

6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?
Problems? Nothing I can't fix. Restrictions? Plenty... it's soo difficult to read smut fics without someone asking me what I'm reading while trying to read em while they ask me. I almost got caught reading Sassette's Vignette... the wet tee shirt one... by my godmom who found me smiling at the computer.

7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions?
No job. :(

8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?)
hrm... computer... how long... 9 or 10 years... 486

9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)
I can't mould REAL LIFE with the computer... and i certainly can't print money and catch murders before they happen... I want that Minority Report machine!

10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.
PUCCA
Megawitches
FlashKit
Orisinal
Wiccan Ways
Basically anywhere that has Amber Benson and Alyson Hannigan and computer design and techie stuff.

11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?
INTERNET ACCESS with a stupid lousy isp.... for now.

12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer?
It can't generate big bucks for me.

13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology?
Make thing work out for me, generate realities... I'm dreaming... I'd get a super computer and the technology to generate a new reality where I have a good job, a better life for my parents and a great gf for myself...oh..and maybe be a couple inches taller. And travel from one place to another using a transporter hat is connected to the net... but I have to have a really good isp or less if the connection breaks... then.. i wouldn't wanna imagine where I'll be...

14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name??

My computer...is gender-less... it got neutered. :grin

Postby katydid » Tue Jul 16, 2002 5:25 am

I woke up a very upset kitten this morning. I woke up and was CONVINCED it was Friday. I starting getting ready for work....then it dawned on me it is only Tuesday. I couldn't have been more disappointed. I was so disappointed...that I took the day off. lol I just needed a day to sit around and do absolutely nothing.

My computer is a mutt. My mom works for the federal government...and they sell off excess equipment all the time. She snagged the best one she could. At least it came with a zip drive...not live I will ever use it though. I have upgraded everything but the processor...cause that will be a bit more expensive than I can do right now. Plus it works...so why mess with it. I do have a wallpaper up...it is of a rubber duck. Thats it. lol My screensaver is just where it cycles through scans of pictures I took over my vacation. I figured that had to be better than flying windows. My computer doesn't have a name...unless it starts acting up....then I have a few choice names for it. I tend to lose my temper with machines alot easier. I would guess my computer would be male though...lol....just some of the errors it makes....it just has to be male. This is the first computer I have actually owned...but I have used computers for about 10 years.

My brother loves to fool around with computers...so we actually managed to get a network set up for our computers. It took a long time because his computer doesn't play well with others. lol My computer is basically pretty generic. I have added lots of little gadgets...cause I just had to have them. I have a scanner, camera, and for some reason I bought a TV card. I haven't really used it that much...it is just the fact that I have it. lol Well at least I got my avatar out of it...;)

1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination?
It's a Dell and it's about 3 years old. This is all I know.

2. What kind of peripherals do you have? What's your favorite?
Not much. Just your basic stuff and a printer. Have a scanner at work that I like to play with.

3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?
I have one of my favorite Peanuts comic strips taped on the edge of the monitor and a Britney Spears sticker. :) My mouse pad is a gargoyle sticking his tounge out.

4. Wallpaper?
Right now I have a wallpaper featuring the lovely Holly Marie Combs. The latest lady I want to marry. :)

5. Screen saver?
I have one of those that rotates favorite pics. Our girls are in there as well as the ladies from Charmed, Angelina Jolie, Kelly Osbourne, Gillian Anderson, Annabeth Gish, Trina, the list goes on...

6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?
Always kicks me offline but that may just be AOL. And, also, I think it has a ghost.

7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions?
Okay, this puppy sucks. I got my bosses old comp. when she got a new one. It is constantly going to a blue screen and refusing to restart.

8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?)
My first comp was probably close to 10 years ago. It was a crappy old Mac something or other. My parents still have it. 24 K modem at all. This is why I rarely spend much time at home.

9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)
Hmmm... I don't know. The possibilities are endless.

10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.
E-mode - quizess!!! www.emode.com
Holly Marie Combs - Marry me please? www.hollymcombs.com
The Cross and Stake - www.angelicslayer.com/tbcs/
Google - I'm always searching for something - www.google.com
The Charmed Ones. My other favorite show - www.thecharmedones.com

11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?
Being able to talk to my best friend who is three hours away every day.

12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer?
It always freakin' freezes at the most inconvenient time.

13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology?
I would make it faster! Someone get me a better connection!

14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name??
Not really. Which is odd because I have a name for my car, and other stuff but no name for the computer.

1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination?
Just one little desktop :( . I have a basic 19 G hard drive(god I want a bigger one), basic 44x CD-Rom, 128 M ram. However there's a CD burner on the main computer on the network.

2. What kind of peripherals do you have? What's your favorite?
Just my speakers and monitor. I don't need peripherals since I'm on a home network, I just network everything I need stored or whatever to the main computer

3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?
I don't have a mouse pad since I use an optical mouse, which can be rolled on anything relatively flat

4. Wallpaper?
Pumpkin, my cat

5. Screen saver?
nope

6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?
Described above. It's on my desk, in my room
7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions?
Still in school

8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?)
5,6 years. I don't remember my first computer, but it was a family one.

9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)
Download much more. I'm running out of diskspace

10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.
The Internet Movie Database(www.imdb.com).
Fanfiction.net.
The Cross and Stake.
The Online Guitar Archive(www.olga.net).

11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?
DSL. 'nuff said.

12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer?
Microsoft Access. 'Nuff said.

13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology?
A direct access to the nervous system through a plug in the back of the neck that can hijack nerve signals and convert them into electrical signals for the computer to use. It could type what you think. It would also open up VR possibilities previously left to the realm of sci-fi.

14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name?? I call my computer "it".

Edited cuz I can't tell the diff between can and can't

At home, my wife and I run a pair of P3's running at 866 Mhz - one's a Win2K box, the other's WinME (soon to be WinXP). they're usually connected with a router. DSL line, so a pretty big pipe. Looking for a 3+ megapixel camera with a good macro lens (to photograph gaming mini's).

At work I use a Dell P3 (Win2K) and an HP machine running Linux. T1 line, but there's a thousand machines on the various networks...

Both work and home have W/T wallpapers.

Not sure what a peripheral is.

3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?

No, it's a laptop so I use the trackpad.

4. Wallpaper?

Oh, I alternate a lot. When I was on Windows, I'd use paint shop pro and make my own - but now I mostly just use any WT ones I can find. Right now I have one of Shinnen's up, the "True Love Is Frozen In Time" one.

5. Screen saver?

Don't have a screen saver.

6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?

Eh, not too many problems. Usually it's something minor, but this computer is new. My windows always shut down, that's why I've switched to the iBook. No restrictions.

7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions?

Too young to work, so can't answer this.

8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?)

Woo..I've had so many computers. My family doesn't really use them, so I'm pretty much the only one who goes on the computer. Um, I had one for 6 years - it was an IBM aptiva. Then that one broke down and I got a compaq. Since then I've had one of the blueberry iBooks, a compaq laptop, an HP, and now this new iBook.

9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)

Too much.

10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.

Not sure how to link, so I'll just list the sites. Probably Wiccan Ways, Extra Flamey, Stain and Varnish, Much Ado About BtVS, and Willow And Tara's Room.

11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?

It's a laptop so I can take it anywhere.

12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer?

It's a mac so all of the good windows programs aren't available like paint shop pro and winmx.

13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology?

::Shrugs:: Not smart enough to answer that. Lol.

14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name??

No to both questions.
That kind of love

1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination?

At home: I have a 2.5 year old Dell.

right now I'm at my dad's and he has a "Amigo". Never heard of it.

3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?

I have this really cool mouse and mouse pad that my stepsister gave me. The mouse is painted like a lady bug, and the pad is decorated as a field of flowers. Only problem is that it doesn't have a middle button (not even a rolly thing) and so clicking the left and right buttons replaces the rolly thing, and since the simultaneous clicking is reserved, it means that for what you normally use the simultaneous click you can't anymore. In short, Minesweeper is MUCH harder to play now.

4. Wallpaper?

The Solar System

5. Screen saver?

for five minutes, line patterns. Then the monitor shuts off.

6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?

At home, no problems. At my dad's, they have a 100Mhz computer, with almost no RAM, so it seems. The connection is 56K, but because of the super-slow speed, it seems as if it's slower than a 14.4.

10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.

Since the Kitten is a given,
games.yahoo.com
My mail thing.
My college webpage
My bridge club's webpage (I'm in charge of maintaining it)
Chat (I miss you guys already)

11. Most useful 'things' about your computer?

internet, ebooks, dvd player. Notice I changed the q to "things"

12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer?

Don't want to make it mad, so not saying. :)

13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology?

I don't know if this is the place, but I know that for my next computer, I definitely want a laptop. And as much as I was complaining over the last six weeks, I'm going to make it have a dual boot with Linux. I don't know if it's too late to partition my computer at home. Any ideas, those who know more?

14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name??

My computer's name is Grapefruit. Depending on if I'm happy or upset at it, it's gender changes. But usually it's genderless. But I always think of it as Grapefruit.

Oh, and I'm safe in my Dad's now. I went to the bridge club in Netanya today with my grandparents and my cousin. Nothing averse happened to us, but I heard that a bus was ambushed near Nablus. That's not near where I am. And my sister arrives tomorrow, and I'm very excited about that, because I haven't seen her in ten months!

Sorry to bore people, and my message is extremely long, but as I will only post one message today, I feel justified. I don't really, but I'll claim it, anyway.

edited to add: if anyone wants a postcard, e-mail me an address to send it to.

Postby Hugin » Tue Jul 16, 2002 7:43 am

Well, just got back from my echocardiogram. The technician said she didn't see anything out of line, but I have to wait for final confirmation from a cardiologist. So, my working theory is that the tachycardia and atrial fibrillation were the result of stress, that I had an anxiety attack, basically. Because no discernable external factor stimulated my heart, like coffee or alcohol or cocaine, and they can't find any structural damage or abnormalities in my heart itself. My doctor just took me off my beta-blocker, we'll see how things go the next week.

As far as the computer questions:

[b:3059a509ac] 1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination? [/b:3059a509ac] I have a desktop at home. 1 ghz AMD Athlon with 512 mb of memory and an 80 gig drive with a 40 gig backup. But I'm about to build a dual processor , twin 1.9 gig Athlon MP machine, with a 120 gig drive (and the old 80 as a backup), and a gig of ram. Rar!

And I sort of "own" a whole bunch of computers at work, since I'm the computer guy here.

[b:3059a509ac] 2. What kind of peripherals do you have? What's your favorite?[/b:3059a509ac]

I''m not honestly a huge fan of peripherals. I mean, sometimes I use a printer, and sometimes I use a scanner, but my setup at home is pretty clean. The main thing I attach to my computer is my spiffy MP3 jukebox.

[b:3059a509ac] 3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?[/b:3059a509ac]

No. No stickers or magnets or anything.

[b:3059a509ac] 4. Wallpaper?[/b:3059a509ac]

I switch wallpapers all the time. At the moment, I have this striking image of a woman's bare back, her hair is in this long black braid. It's cool.

[b:3059a509ac] 5. Screen saver?[/b:3059a509ac]

At work I have a nicely geeky Matrix screensaver. At home, I don't use one because they tend to interfere with some other applications I run.

[b:3059a509ac] 6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?[/b:3059a509ac]

No. I mean, it's occasionally flaky, but nothing serious.

[b:3059a509ac] 7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions?[/b:3059a509ac]

I'm the computer guy. :) I do what I like at work.

[b:3059a509ac] 8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?)[/b:3059a509ac]

Since....oh goodness...a long time. My first computer of my own was a Commodore 64, but I was messing with Commodore Pets and old Apples at school before that.

[b:3059a509ac] 9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)[/b:3059a509ac]

I'm weak with web design stuff, scripting languages, Perl, PHP, XML that sort of thing. I'm working on it.

[b:3059a509ac] 11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?[/b:3059a509ac]

Net connectivity.

[b:3059a509ac] 12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer?[/b:3059a509ac]

Hm..I don't know, I love the things.

[b:3059a509ac] 13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology?[/b:3059a509ac]

Computer manufacturers and software developers swing wildly between treating users as if they must be rocket scientists, and treating them like they must be morons. Somehwere between way too obscure and way too insulting, has got to be a middle ground my users at work would be more comfortable with.

[b:3059a509ac] 14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name??[/b:3059a509ac]

I don't actually think of them as having genders, despite being very fond of them.

Postby skittles » Tue Jul 16, 2002 8:19 am

This is fun!! It's interesting to see how everyone 'thinks' & 'feels' about their computer.. the names are cool.. Yeah, I should answer my own questions, too!!

[b:09bcfa242c] 1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination? [/b:09bcfa242c]
I have a Compaq Presario Laptop. And I love it!! Because I teach math & business (also computers) I had to make sure that I had a computer that could do all of the stuff that is essential to my teaching.. office suites, graphics & languages.. and all of the math programs.. so, this is one powerful puppy... at least for a laptop. (& I have a "down" desktop waiting for some money to get fixed.. )

[b:09bcfa242c] 2. What kind of peripherals do you have? What's your favorite?[/b:09bcfa242c]
Laser printer.. and a zip drive.. also a micromouse..

[b:09bcfa242c] 3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?[/b:09bcfa242c]
lots of cat hair... comes with having a cat that doesn't like it when I'm on the computer & not playing with him/it... My mouse pad is one by Ron DiCinni .. "and His Name..."

[b:09bcfa242c] 4. Wallpaper?[/b:09bcfa242c]
That changes.. sometimes a message.. "Remember to.. (do something)" .. a picture of family &/or friends.. usually just a black screen or background.. sometimes I find the wallpaper distracting. I also try to keep the icons to a minimum....

[b:09bcfa242c] 5. Screen saver?[/b:09bcfa242c]
The time floating around.. I keep terrible time, so I need reminders!! (In fact, I know that I will be late to my own funeral..)

[b:09bcfa242c] 6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?[/b:09bcfa242c]
56K dial up connection at home.. only problems are slow downloads & it ties up the phone line..

[b:09bcfa242c] 7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions?[/b:09bcfa242c]
I teach & I have to share the classroom computer with other teachers & occasionally a student has to use it. This can be frustrating because of lack of privacy. Also, the school connection is filtered and all sites are logged. If you hit a site, there is a log & the PTB love to find out what stuff everyone looks at... :D

[b:09bcfa242c] 8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?)[/b:09bcfa242c]
20 + years!! I had an Atari 800 with 16K (& then 48K) and the notorious cassette tape drive!!! I could program in basic on it & I did learn a lot from it.. I also sold computers at the local department store.. One of less than a dozen people chain wide that could talk intelligently about computers! I've also worked on mainframes (HP, Unix) but for some reason I've never used a Mac.. although I want to learn..

[b:09bcfa242c] 9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)[/b:09bcfa242c]
I can't cure cancer, the common cold or achieve world peace.. I also cannot do really fancy programming or graphics stuff. I'm still learning, and I'm willing to learn. Current project is learning web design.

[b:09bcfa242c] 10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.[/b:09bcfa242c]
CNN News
BBC News
Detroit Free Press
Amazon but only if I have money....
The comics that I listed in yesterday's daily thread..
And my credit union, so I can play with the money that I don't have...

[b:09bcfa242c] 11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?[/b:09bcfa242c]
Number Crunching, Internet Access & Communications, Information Processing & Storage. The ability to get & keep information is what I absolutely love most about computing.
I also love the fact that I can keep in touch with family & friends.. & make new friends, too!! (GCT hurray!!)

[b:09bcfa242c] 12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer? [/b:09bcfa242c]
It isn't psychic.

[b:09bcfa242c] 13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology? [/b:09bcfa242c]
The problems associated with privacy & hacking. I think that we should be able to surf anonymously, but that anonymity also allows people to do stuff that is illegal & unethical. I would like to be able to make the world a better & safer place, but some people are ruining it by either restricting it or abusing the privilege. I wish that people would be responsible.. but everyone is human.... I think... I hope...

[b:09bcfa242c] 14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name?? [/b:09bcfa242c]
I call my laptop a miracle.. because the very fact that I have one is a miracle!! It was a gift from my family & my friends so I would have a nice laptop as I start my teaching career!!

1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination?

I have a Gateway athlon 1200, 256 ram, 75 gig hardrive. My laptop is a hewlett packard, 1300 pentium, 512 ram, 30 gig hard drive.

2. What kind of peripherals do you have? What's your favorite?

Scanner, printer, digital camera, webcam. I'd have to say my scanner is my favorite because it's a real slim canon that makes fabulous scans. My mouse mentioned below and my beautiful keyboard, which is like buttah.

3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?

No nothing, I have one of those wedge paper holders on top of my monitor that's it. No mouse pad as such because i have a trackball, the best trackball known to man. So I just have thios ugly plastic pad with a gel wrist support where my trackball sits.

4. Wallpaper? Shinnen's "Life was a Song" wallpaper. I am kind of addicted to it. I used to rotate but I am in love with it. A w/t image of course!

5. Screen saver? None, screensavers often crash. I don't like them!

6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions? I love my computer at home, it stays on all the time and now that it runs Windows XP I have no problem with it whatsoever. Rarely crashes, IE crashes, but nothing else really does, and really hardly ever does the system. I think twice it told me that the virtual ram had run out. I think the only thing I don't like is that I can't capture video with it, though my laptop has firewire, I really should experiment with that.

7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions? Well I work at a school, so there are dozens and dozens of them. I only teach half time, the other I coordinate this grant, part of the job is working with these computers... so basically I have access to all of the ones at the school. I have 9 in my own classroom. 3 of which are very new and 1 which is the very old, the first computer I ever owned, a Tandy from the mid eighties. In the school, we have macs, pcs, but slowly the school is being converted to PC. It used to be dominated by apple. The thing is the more revolutionary educational programs work on PC and not mac. I am not complaining though :) Mostly though I take my laptop, we have a t1 and i can plug in anywhere in the school and that makes me real happy :)

8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?) I have been around computers since middle school, so I'd say 1984, we had those Apple II that were modern then. I had 2 computer classes that year and learned a bit of Basic. My first computer was a tandy, i think the hard drive was 150 megs. The processor from the 300 family. Mostly I used it to play games and print my school work. I didn't really touch computers in college though, I was too busy being gay :p Hmm, however as I said earlier my first computer still works. It is at least 15 years old. The kids in my classroom still play games on it.

9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)

Oh geez, I can't program. I know basic HTML and learn coding when necessary like to make fun things in a MOO, but other than that, I have no knowledge of programming and it makes me sad :(

10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.

stroud's, extra flamey, fanfiction.net, tvguideonline, and my yahoo. I suppose.

11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?

Well the internet and all it has to offer. The ability to communicate with people from around the world.

12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer?

Oh I know that darn modem, the one that I only use for faxing now, which I fax so little.

13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology?

I would free and accessible to all. It gets cheaper and cheaper but I think everyone should be able to enjoy it.

14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name??

Well, yes my computer is a female and it does have a name :p but I'll keep that to myself :grin

Nothing fancy. A Packard Hell (sic) desktop that I use for both business and pleasure, and a Dell laptop that is strictly for business. (Or, at least it was until I downloaded the "Entropy" kiss. I suppose that taints it in the eyes of the IRS. But it's worth it. :evil ) Printers for each, and a shared scanner.

Favorite sites? Eclectic. Stuff like Salon, Buffy C&S, Lesbianation, Smoking Gun, Advocate, Travelocity, and Orbitz. Plus an historical site for Grayson County, KY, so that I can worship my ancestors.

The computers don't have names. Well, actually, they do when they crash, and I scream at them. But nothing I can share here.

ive got a laptop that i used to take around to do all of my school presentations and whatnot. i have a funny wallpaper story.

so im setting up at my professors house to give a seminar presentation...we met at her house instead of at school for some reason...and im hooking up the computer to the projector and turning it on and everything. so i go into the kitchen to get some water or something and i can hear everyone laughing back in the living room, and so i go in and everyone is just staring at me with these really bizarre expressions on their faces.

so..i have this thing for nude photography, and i often use it as a wallpaper. in this particular instance it was holger maass' "Hands". there was a giant naked woman plastered on the wall of my professors living room.

just to give you an idea of how cool my professors were, she looks at it thoughtfully and says, "i like it."

xita owns a Gateway... more reason to adore her... *laugh*

1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination? I have to say that the fact that I work for Gateway has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I have two of them... *laugh* (Okay, payroll deduction and employee discount play a large part in it.....) I have a Gateway 550 MHz p3, with a 10 gig primary and now a 30 gig secondary hard drive, 192 MB of memory and a CDRW. I also have a Gateway 5300 laptop that is a P3 650Mhz. Both running windows xp.

Of course the one that I look forward to is my soon to be new system that I get at the end of next month. It will be a Gateway 2.26 GHz, with a gig of memory, 120GB hard drive, DVDRAM, CDRW, Firewire and surrond sound.... *sigh* (38 days and counting)

My first comp was when I was 3 ( I'm 17 now) it was a 486 or 5..not too sure.

Most useful 'thing' about your computer-For all that it gives me trouble...it's got Word on it and I love it for that! Works sucks so much. Least useful 'thing' about your computer- The internet it like a snail who has been drinking, it's slow and it staggers around. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology-Uhm...give computers things to keep them happy like companion computers...? My computer is most definately a guy. As much as he might try to deny it, he is. No name.

I'm going to shamlessly plug my new fic, [b:393618bdbe] 7th Hellvan[/b:393618bdbe], which is on Pens
(Edited because my punctuation is horrible, and I could shorten the post.)

Oh a chance to brag :grin , it would be more fun if I had the biggest, the bestest and the fastest, but oh well, I am stunningly handsome already, I can't have everything I guess. [img:1e7d78c307]http://www.uniquehardware.co.uk/server-smilies/ups/mtk/badteeth.gif[/img:1e7d78c307]

[b:1e7d78c307] 1. What kind of computer(s)? Laptop or desktop or what combination?[/b:1e7d78c307]
Well I do my internet stuff on this one, a Pentium III, 900MHz, 128MB ram, 40 GB hardrive, DVD CDrom and CD rewriter, ME edition.
I also have a Pentium IV, 1.8GHz, 256MB ram, 80GB, DVD CDrom and CD rewriter, Window XP
My laptop: Pentium IV, 2.0 GHz, 256MB ram , 20GB, DVD CDrom/rewriter, WindowsXP
and then I have my old computer on which all my games are installed, a Pentium II, 333MHz, 128 MB ram, 6.4 GB, CDrom, Windows 98

And yes I know I should stop buying computers. [img:1e7d78c307]http://www.westwoodi.net/~smilies/cwm/3dlil/ugh.gif[/img:1e7d78c307]

[b:1e7d78c307] 2. What kind of peripherals do you have? What's your favorite?[/b:1e7d78c307]
Right now just one old scanner and a webcam.

[b:1e7d78c307] 3. Anything attached to or on the computer? Special/unique mouse pad?[/b:1e7d78c307]
Not yet. Though there is some goo lodged in my keyboard.

[b:1e7d78c307] 4. Wallpaper?[/b:1e7d78c307]
Ah yes, I'm using Hollowchick's wonderful blue KittenBoard/WT/AA wallpaper.

[b:1e7d78c307] 5. Screen saver?[/b:1e7d78c307]
Disabled on this comp, but if I use it I'm rotating my fav WT wallpapers.

[b:1e7d78c307] 6. Computer at home? Problems or restrictions?[/b:1e7d78c307]
All my comps are in the same room, heh. No restrictions, and always problems. :p

[b:1e7d78c307] 7. Computer at work? Problems or restrictions?[/b:1e7d78c307]
Yeah, a few restrictions but all I want on the internet is email and the Kitten, and that's no problem, unfortunately I rarely have the time to go online at work, work getting in the way and all.

[b:1e7d78c307] 8. Computing how long? First computer? (what kind?)[/b:1e7d78c307]
Well my very first computer I got in 1984 I think and it was a commodore 64, which I still have and which still works, my second much later in 1995 I think was a pentium I, 100MHz, a few rams, 1.3GB.

[b:1e7d78c307] 9. What can't you do with the computer? (serious & fun answers are fine)[/b:1e7d78c307]
Well I am basically making it up as I go along, I know very little really, but that is not stopping me. Mostly I just use it for internetting and I do the occasional creative stuff, I rarely play games anymore, no time.

[b:1e7d78c307] 10. Five favorite or most visited sites: The kitten is a given.[/b:1e7d78c307]
Given and Google and my email accounts.

[b:1e7d78c307] 11. Most useful 'thing' about your computer?[/b:1e7d78c307]
Hum well, it enables me to go online, heh.

[b:1e7d78c307] 12. Least useful 'thing' about your computer? [/b:1e7d78c307]
Well it's a dust magnet.

[b:1e7d78c307] 13. If you could, what would you change about computing, the internet, technology?[/b:1e7d78c307]
Never ever ever a pop up window ever ever again, and I would wave my magic wand so that yahoo might never crash me again. Also I would make it so that I could bloody well use my old games with Windows XP without having to download a million things first.

[b:1e7d78c307] 14. Final Question: Do you think of your computer as having a gender?? is it male/female ?? Does your computer have a name?? [/b:1e7d78c307]
Uhm that thought never occured to me and I have not even named my cats, so no, they don't have names.
