Its Wedding Rings Friday, MKF!!! 8/30

Postby Zahir al Daoud » Thu Aug 29, 2002 8:08 am

I recently got engaged ([i:762ef65745]yay[/i:762ef65745]) so my lady and I were discusssing wedding rings. I wanted something a tad more elaborate than she. I wanted two small stones--our birthstones. She just wants simple bands. For the record, I've bowed to her wishes (remarks about good training could be skipped about now, please?).

What kind of wedding rings would you like? Or do you have? And what type do you see on the fingers of our favorite witches?

I'd use my Dad's wedding ring, which i have...but depending on my particularly romantic mood, I'm not sure if I'd use his ring on my finger, or give it to whomever I propose to. (which would be a HUGE deal for mt, btw. I don't let anyone touch that ring, usually.)
I envision the girls with some ancient celtic relics....pagean and like 3000 years old.

peace.

My engagement ring is an absolutely gorgeous fiery red opal, which is funny because my birthstone is saphire. Anyway, the fire elements of the opal are played up by a diamond setting. It is beautiful, but I don't wear it too often because it gets beat up. When we got married, my husband encouraged me to get a simple ring, and I chose a nice gold band. It makes sense, because I don't worry about it getting damaged nearly so much. One thing I've noticed is that when I don't have the ring on my finger, it makes me feel almost naked.

As for Willow and Tara, I could see them trading fancy versions of Claddagh rings (the one that Angel gave Buffy, with the heart in the middle held by two hands). The rings originated in Ireland, and since the witchcraft the two practice seems Celtic based it would make sense.

Let's see..my girl and I have these sort of celtic knot rings...not wedding rings, though I hope to change that. Kinda always pictured the girls having something similar, or like arafel said, claddagh rings...gold w/ some kind of heart-shaped stone in where the heart is.

Well back when I thought I was married....before Jenny cheated on me....I bought her a white gold diamond ring. Not very big at all...because come on I was in college....and working at McDonalds couldn't afford much. So anyway...she wore that ring and I wore a gold band.

As for W/T I'll agree with the celtic bands...but maybe as thumb rings???

Congratulations Zahir! :bounce :bounce Engagements are fun!

Our commitment rings are gold with a beautiful scrolled leaf surrounding the band and then polished to make them look older. They were done by a local artist here in Brooklyn. Joann spotted them & surprised me! I love these rings!
Next year will be our 10th together, and to mark the special milestone we are getting them engraved. :p

God, 10 already :eek

I see Willow and Tara giving each other the family ring that is the most special to each of them, like their grandmother's ring. Something they both truly treasure :heart I know they will have different rings but that is part of the charm that is Willow & Tara! Cuties! :love

Peace and love to all Kittens everywhere :peace

We were too poor to afford rings when I got married, so we exchanged a necklace and an anklet with little runestones on them . . . and the wedding ceremony was actually very nice, even considering that I was on drugs, bleeding from the kidneys, and we had very nearly broken up that morning, but that was pretty par for the course for my rather disastrous marriage. You know, now that I think about it, I have no idea where that necklace is, even though I wore it constantly for five years. This makes me wonder where it is, and exactly when I stopped wearing it.

Anyway, perhaps perversely, I still recommend the runestones in spite of everything, and I think Willow and Tara would have liked them, too.

I agree with Arafel and areslei, they'd definitely go for something with a celtic design on it. If not claddagh, then maybe a trinity knot (like my avatar).

Congratultations and best wishes Zahir.

Congrats Zahir.

I hardly wear jewelery, so rings tend to come and go with me. I do have a white gold ring with a diamond that someone very special bought for me, and I like to wear that when I think of her, as it was a good time for both of us and signified something that's enduring and really quite wonderful. Heh.

I've been bought rings before, by other girlfriends, but they were more of a token gesture than one with true meaning, I think. I'm not one much for the gestures, myself. I prefer something simple.

I do, however, have a claddagh ring that my mum bought me for Christmas last year. It goes onto my little finger and I do love it so; it's silver and looks great. The band itself is a woven celtic type, rather than plain silver. It's pretty. I have, however, since passed it on to someone else who is keeping it for me. Nice and safe. ;)

As for Willow and Tara; I'm not sure they'd choose rings, exactly. But I know they'd choose something symbolic of who they are to one another, rather than a big ol' expensive ring.

Engagement rings? Willow and Tara? I think that I have to agree with theatremouse when s/he says that the girls would probably have something pagan and like three thousand years old...something really special and wonderful...but they really wouldn't need them, I'm sure, to know that their love would be true and enduring. And on second thought, I could easily see them wearing the simplest of tokens as rings...I'm just kinda indecisive this mroning. Congratulations on the engagement btw, Zahir...I hope you will be very happy :)

My partner and I bought commitment rings (no same sex marriages in Australia yet not with Homophobic Howard in charge anyway) about 2 months after we met. We wanted something different and we both spotted these two rings at the same time and fell in love with them. They are gold rings in the shape of the eye of horus.

That's funny you should ask about what W/T would buy because I was quite disappointed in the fact that in the show W/T didn't have any jewelery from each other, that we knew of anyway. I think Willow would have bought Tara a commitment ring for her Birthday in the Family episode. For the type of ring I'd have to agree with the others and say something celtic meaning soul mates or protection or commitment or the handing over one's soul to each other for safe keeping symbol (I don't even know whether celtic symbols exist for these things but Willow would have found the right one).

PS I think congratulations are in order. Did you propose? Was it romantic? Are all kittens invited to the engagement party?

Well, truly I see Willow and Tara with necklaces more than rings. This is the jewelry I see them wearing most, and I like the idea that they would have a not-quite-matched set. Or, if they had rings, that their rings would not-quite-match but clearly belong together.

As for me...well, my partner and I are about to get rings; we just had a civil union, in fact (last week!) after almost 8 years. The rings are the same. Two separate thin bands in two slightly different shades of gold that are looped together in one place, if you can picture that.

Congratulations to Zahir and Tulipp! Yay!

I think Willow and Tara would have rings for an actually civil union or wedding. I'm going to say necklaces for the engagement/committment though... And I like the idea of slightly different rings and necklaces.

For our c.u. last month, Darcy and I exchanged matching necklaces (two pendant hearts, one nestled inside the other). I'm a total spaz with jewelry and hate having rings on my hands. Big knuckles from playing the piano and various sports on short fingers does not make an attractive platform for a ring....

Hey, Hot Mama Yama. What's the story here...do you get to pick out your own status labels now?

And...married...eek... My mother still calls her a daughter-out-law, though, and we had more of honey-un than a honey-moon. :)

Congratulations on the engagement and civil union.

I'm also inclined to think W/T would use something with a Celtic knot design. However, my college roommate bought a $6 ring at a flea market - simple silver band with flowers engraved around it - which they had duplicated in gold for her husband. (He was a BIG guy, and his ring ran something closer to $750, in 1970s dollars!). The rings had a simple elegance to them that I think would work nicely for W/T.

Triscuit7 (Corky) isn't telling the whole story. We HAVE rings, bought from a silversmith at the Sisterspace Pocono Weekend lo these many years ago (probably about 15). I've worn mine every day since then. Since Corky didn't like having jewelry on her hands, at one point I bought her a silver chain, and we strung the ring (along with a set of freedom/rainbow rings) for her to wear - but she also doesn't like things dangling when she bends over. (I, on the other hand, love to watch certain things dangle there when she bends over, but that's another story ...)

When we were planning our C.U., we started hunting for her original ring, thinking we'd get it resized for the ceremony. It never turned up (working theory is that the whole thing became a shiny cat toy). The necklaces were something we saw while shopping for C.U. outfits, and decided would work. I even worked them into my vows.

As with the rings, I've worn mine every day since then - and Corky's is sitting on a table waiting to become a cat toy. It doesn't really matter, though - I love her anyway, and the commitment is no less real despite the lack of a tangible symbol.

Congratulations Tulipp :) I have no idea about the rings although it is something I'll have to look into in a few months or so. I liked the idea that I have read in some fanfics about charm braclets that have little things on to remind them like a tiny kitty and a rose etc.

Tulip! How loverly! Congrats!

As for an engagement party--I don't think so. Colleen is severely agoraphobic (fear of open spaces) and is working on simply leaving the apartment more often, sans panic attacks.

However, when [i:1297272ec7]The Day[/i:1297272ec7] comes, we'll see how she feels. I for one would love to invite Kittens to our ceremony. I'll keep you posted.

Many thanks for your kinds words! This is something I'd given up on--I fully expected as little as three years ago to spend the rest of my life alone. Then Colleen somehow melted the ice in my heart. *sigh*

(BTW, I already gave her a claddagh ring, but her fingers are so tiny she wears it on a chain around her neck. Likewise I wear one from her around mine. awwwwww...!)

[/quote:c5974f11f0] Oh Ruth we've known that forever.

My partner and I bought rings when we decided to have our commitment ceremony. We found a rather unique shop in Houston and picked our own rings out. So they don't match at all, but we like them. Nancy has a silver ring with an opal stone and smaller rubies along the band of it near the opal and I have a simple gold and white gold band. They suit us. Though I will say this - opal rings are a pain in the ass because the stone is so soft. We've had to replace it twice over the 12 years she's had it. So beware the opal.

Wow, congrats Zahir and Tulipp! Diana and I got married very quiet like on New Year's Day, January 2000. (we've actually been together far longer than we have been married.) We had our rings custom made because we just kind of wanted something original. My band is platinum with inlaid ridges around the center of it, rather thin. Diana's has 24k gold band in the center surrounded by two platinum bands. Very masculine but fits her hand better than most wedding bands.

I think Willow and Tara might go for the white gold, Celtic knotwork kind of bands. Something very old-style and ornate. I think it would be beautifully classy.

Well, I'm not engaged yet but my bf and I have given each other rings for Christmas last year. His is gold with a band of onyx and a small diamond and mine is silver with engraved flowers and a garnet (my birthstone).

I bought myself a ring for Christmas last year as well, it's a puzzle ring (4 rings which twist together to create 1) which I love. I could see W/T with this type of ring or 2 others.

First, I saw these bands about 10 years ago in NYC and instantly wanted them for my wedding. They are antique gold bands with the claddagh symbol engraved into them all the way around the band. They are gorgeous.

Second, My best friend and her husband had their rings made by his sister who was an artist. They are both made of silver and are engraved. When put together the engraving creates a passage in hebrew. I'm not sure what the passage is but the rings are beautiful and I love the idea that you need to have both rings together in order to complete the passage.

I like the last idea the most for W/T.

First, congratulations, Zahir!
I have no idea what kind of wedding rings my fiance and I are going to have when we get hitched. It's possible that my ring may be a family heirloom handed on by his mother. But if not, I'm sure we'll think of something...
And I thought some of you might find this amusing.. this is an Alexis Denisof interview from Zap2It, translated from English into German and then back again (he's talkinga bout the Wesley/Lilah thing):
[quote:4d4d8ce9a3][b:4d4d8ce9a3][i:4d4d8ce9a3]Quote:[/i:4d4d8ce9a3][/b:4d4d8ce9a3]
When Denisof was asked whether there is hope that the two become lucky, it answered safe "Oh. It is a Joss Whedon series, therefore we hunt the characters first by hell, in order to let it feel afterwards briefly the feeling of sky and luck blessedness, but only a completely small little, before we send them thereafter back to hell." Although many of the pairs in both series have any supernatural abilities, both Wesley, and Lilah possess none and are "normal" humans. "is with someone human in bed to be been strange," told Denisof. In our series you never know, whom or which will run you over the way, that is very much erfrischend."

In the real life is Denisof with Alyson Hannigan together, which plays the Willow in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Although there is sister series, they do not turn at the same places. Buffy turns in Santa Monica, while fishing rod is turned in the Paramount of studios, which means that Hannigan is not thereby if Denisof and Romanov turn their dear scenes. "you," said Denisof would be more than welcome. It is brought everything open on the table, laughs he "and in addition it here that will also read."
