The Kuzuis own the rights, so they can do anything they want with the franchise. Unfortunate, but true. Fox and Sandollar are both apparently out of the picture.

Yeah, it's tough.

On the one hand, he's responsible for the first five seasons of the show, which are my favorite thing on television ever. So, I try to steer clear of full on hate.

On the other hand, he's responsible for UPN!BtVS, and the complete dismantling of everything good and enjoyable and worthwhile about the show. So, I just can't be a fan anymore.

It's a complicated emotion.

As for the reboot...whatevs. I've pretty much got the same attitude I have about any movie: if it happens, and it looks like it might be good, maybe I'll see it.

"For me, Whedon is to BtVS what Chaiken is to The L Word.

I am grateful for their initial concept of the shows, but that's where my loyalty stops. I might be won over by outside sources (say, a good friend of mine who's only now becoming a fan of Firefly/Serenity) to watch their stuff, but I'll never be emotionally invested in anything they set out to do.

Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui... would it really be such a smart move to make a Buffy movie without erm, Buffy?

The idea behind the new reboot is to maintain the show's mythology while introducing a new slayer and Hellmouth-threatened group of pals, building on the idea that each generation has its own vampire slayer.

If all goes according to plan—and it's shaping up to be a rather large if—Kuzui is looking to franchise the film.

Oh, well, that answers my question. Hmm... I'm not sure what happened to Buffy et co, after the TV show was over, in Whedon's comics, but I do know I did not like the idea of all those newb potential slayers in Season Severed and them all gaining Slayer Status in the end. Like, wtf?

So maybe this will be a movie BEFORE Buffy? I hope? Meh, would I care?

WOULD BE cool though if somehow there's a reincarnated version of W/T (in reverse). I'd watch that. Maybe. See? I'm still on the fence here... o_O"

And to add a little sumpthin'-sumpthin' that makes this topic relevant of being in the Witches and Vixens section: They could dismiss everything that happened after Season 5 and from there on out start this new franchising business... that'd make Buffy still deader than dead, but better yet, Tara still very much alive! Aly and Amber cameo anyone?

I kind of like the idea of a new hellmouth and all of that. Now would it translate well for the silver screen? Probably not. A new TV show or mini series for say, the CW? Most likely.

The Kazui's own the rights to Buffy the film, but oddly enough, Fox owns the rights to the characters, which is why the new movie- which will never get made- could not feature those characters. Joss Whedon does not own the rights to either the movie or the characters.

Just remember: In Hollywood, nothing is 100% set until the cameras roll. And even then, it's not necessarily going to get to your movie theater or TV screen.

So either way, I wouldn't worry about it.

Having seent he almost rabid repsonse to this story on another Buffy site, where there already calls to boycott the films and that its a travesty before a camera has rolled, I'm almost at a loss to understand why.

Okay, the original 1992 film wasn't much cop (although as a slice of tongue-in-cheek teen horror-comedy it works pleasntly enough) but that was then. Are we really to believe that the Kuzuis haven't leant their lesson after 7 years of the show as to how Buffy works? And if tnot them then surely the Director or scipt writer they hire will be only too familiar?

This is a film that thus far has no script. No budget. no director. no cast. Until there are real tangible reasons to get worried, I can't see what fretting now accomplishes.

As for the idea of a reboot v a movie of the tv show, i actually think a reboot is more practical. The average guy or girl on the street may not have seen the series, and given the complex storylines and characterisations that 7 seasons of the show went through, they may feel that seeing a movie which is an extension of that is not worth the effort. As such, any movie of the tv show would only attract the current fan base and I really doubt there is enough to guarantee that a film company would invest the money and creative freedom in order to bring such a project to the screen. What we would most likely get is something that looks like an extended tv ep on screen. it may work for tv, but it isn't cinema.

A reboot poses none of these issues and it might actually be successful enough, artistically, to get people who may never have watched the series to check the series out.

As for the whole Joss thing, I'm ambivalent. he is part of the tv show's baggage and as such may very well be seen as surplus to requirements. he is undoubtedly a fantastic script writer but he is also capable of imploding and making terrible artisitic mistakes.

So for me, if they are going to make an extension of the tv show, then of course those who were chiefly involved have to be part of that. but if they aren't doing that, then none of them are really needed.

How about viewing the Buffy Reboot as a tree?

The original Buffy series created by Joss Whedon remain the roots which shall expand into an innumerable amount of branches that attempt to expand from what the roots propose. Choosing to keep Willow and Tara's love alive in this forum, creating numerous Buffy/Angel romance sequences, merging universes and contexts that suit each person's wishes and desires are all exploitable examples of how an idea may involve creative exploration but by the end, they are all related to the same source – a whedonesque creation.

So let's have a look at another director's unique point of view on the Buffyverse. Whether with or without the beloved characters, contexts, storyine or events that have a special place in our own hearts, it changes nothing to our own unique initial relationship.

It can certainly appear to be quite disturbing when a different mind with a different way of thinking attempts to rechannel what one has learnt to love. But personally I rather like this idea of a Buffy reboot for the new generation because there is continual evolution in research and people's ways of viewing the world. Classics remain classics though ... in that Buffy the way some of us have known the show remains a personal love.

oh, no problem... here in my country, we are trying to understand all this reboot thing means... you know, 'Buffy' changed a whole generation (mine included) and would be nice seeing the kids today watching too... Besides, it´s on TV again, after 6 years, and it´s funny seeing all those kids who doens´t know ANYTHING it...

reboot movies are remakes like in star trek everythings changed. with buffy itll prop be just buffy in name and not much else propobly put a girl name her buffy she fights vampires about it

I like that folks brought up Star Trek- it is an example of a series that has had one original "beloved" original which none of the folowing series have really tried to emulate. The mythos is the same, but that's it. One of the reasons that various Trekkie tend to polarize to their different series (TNG vs original vs DS9 vs whatever) is that they really are different shows. If the "New Buffy" were trying to be just a new version of BtVS, they are doomed. If they take the mythos and run with it, the chance of a good thing is there. There is the usual problem that the loyal fans of the first will despise the new series because it is NOT the thing they know and love... but it would allow good aspects to continue.

Similar examples: Gundam, the Batman franchise(movies, comics, series- all different, most good for different reasons)

If they have a good story, I won't condemn it just because it isn't the series I love. If I condemn it, it will be on its own merits/detriments.

Incidentally, if this comforts anyone- remember the BtVS cartoon? It was being shown at ComiCon as the latest thing, demo reel and all- and never saw the light of day after.

I liked the idea of that cartoon. It had Buffy, Willow, Giles... and it'd probably have been way better than Sabrina the Teenaged Witch - the Animated Series (don't like them much )
