I'll have you know my coffee and kisses coffee shop would be the most popular in town. ;-)

I loved how Willow's naughty mind kept getting her in trouble. Very amusing. Of course the hot chocolate yummies probably didn't help either.

Cheek kiss was very sweet. You know...in the future one of them could shift at the last minute and then POOF! Smoochies. Just sayin'.

Forgot to ask the Missus about MSN, but will do so this evening. I know she's on Yahell more, but I thought somehow all that stuff magically linked up now in cyberspace. But I'm not hip, so who knows?

Hey Sheba,
Lee lives in South Yarra, Melbourne. Will be my first time there i can't wait. Fly out on Monday morning and staying with her for 6 weeks!

Enough of me on to your wonderful update. I really enjoyed the comfortable conversation these 2 shared in this update. They could have said nothing and still managed to flirt with each other. I love how you write the interaction between them very true to life. Another peck on the cheek? Oh you are spoiling us lol.

Wait for the next update with anticipation as usual.

Another good read! Hot Chocolate? Who knew, I'm always reading about tea, coffee and mochas...I like the new change in pace. And speaking of pace, I like how everything is slowly coming together. It reminds me of myself and Maddie thirteen years ago. Those were special times. :blush

Chapter 80.

Postby Shai » Sun Mar 01, 2009 2:59 am

Right, so I'm back with a quick update :) There's no direct interaction between Wiilow and Tara in this one, but I hope you Kitten's still enjoy it...

Cheerio! :peace

WillowRulez - How'd the paper on JFK turn out? I'm flattered that my fics a good distraction, but school's still important! And yes, I'm consciously trying to get my Willow to stand out from the Buffyverse, and still make it easy for Buffy fans to identify with her. Hence the different version of art, which does require an understanding of math ;) What can I say...I'm a genius, lol! ;-)

TinyWillow - Thank you :) Hopefully this chapter will make for enjoyable reading too!

writerfreak - Haha, you can hunt me down too! I haven't been onto the group page in a few, but should check it tonight!

tacoda13 - I'm trying :)

Zampsa1975 - Haha, is there anything you'd like BESIDES kisses and gay-love?! :p

ophelia11 - Mika'd be the bouncer at this famous coffee shop of yours :p Moving position at the last moment would be soooo cliched ;) And I know Mika's on Yahoo more (which IS linked to msn), but she's always appearing offline, so I never know when she's actually on there!

kimmy_s - Australia's gorgeous! You planning to travel the country while there? Have a safe flight, ja? Haha yeah, too many kisses, hence the lack of direct contact in this update ;) But yeah, I'm trying to keep it real, with the fears, insecurities, etc. Thanks for noticing!

redjassy - That's what I thought (you being back in Sing I mean). Vanessa's in a southeast Asian country too? Well, I'm trying to portray Tara as one of those people that take a little time to let you in, and at the same time I don't want her to not be able to let go and have fun. I hope the update was able to get that relaxed side around her handball cirlce across, as well as the fact that she's really letting Willow in. And I'm not even going to bother with responding to the smoochies-chant Joan :p

Sandman78 - When I started with this fic, I knew it'd take a while for the pieces of the jigsaw to really start showing a picture, so I'm really glad you can start to see it now :) And if it brings back special memories for you and any other kittens, then I think I totally deserve to go out and buy myself a drink tonight! :D

Alright, on with the story then...

Spoilers - Nada
Pairing - W/T, A/X, and the rest and pretty much made up by yours truly.
Settings - AU. Tara's a jock, and meet's Willow during a handball tournament.
Rating - PG 13 at the most (Yes, I swear it will change some day!)

Chapter 80.

“I don’t get it” Anya looked down at the sheet in her hand, once again glancing at the ‘Pro’s’ and ‘Con’s’ she’d written out on a sheet of paper. Cordelia and Tara, seated on either side of her on Tara’s bed, glanced at the sheet in her lap, but were unable to comprehend most of Anya’s scribbling.

“Get what?” Cordelia asked, taking another spoonful of Belgian Chocolate flavoured ice-cream from the giant plastic container the three women were sharing.

Anya glanced sideways at Tara, half her focus still on the sheet, “Is kissing on the cheek a lesbian thing?”

“Anya!” Tara shrieked, while Cordelia nearly spat all the now-liquidy ice-cream out of her mouth as she laughed with abandon.

“What?” Anya asked, now giving her full attention to an indignant looking Tara. She pointed at some of the scribbling on her paper, “You kissed her on the cheek, and now she kissed you on the cheek. It’s no wonder your kind hasn’t figured out how to make babies yet!”

“Anya!” Tara exclaimed again, and Cordelia spoke up, “Ahn, you’re being unfair…” Tara was about to thank her, when the brunette added, “You’re forgetting the kiss on the forehead!” That set her off again, and a huffing Tara pulled the ice-cream container away from her. She helped herself to a spoon, waiting for the sound of giggles to dissipate. When they finally had, she glared at Cordelia before turning to look at Anya, “Willow isn’t a lesbian.”

“Oh?” Anya asked, eyebrows arched. “So you’re saying you’ve been reading the signs wrong then?”

Tara sighed, “No, that isn’t what I’m saying”

“Then you’ve read the signs right?” Anya pressed.

“That isn’t what I’m saying either” Tara said, knowing she was being backed into a corner here.

Cordelia saw the panicked look on the blonde’s face, and decided it was time to intervene. “Look Tara” she said, smiling at her friend in a show of genuine support, “from what you’ve told us, it’s pretty obvious that Willow returns your feelings, at least to an extent.”

“Yeah” Anya interrupted loudly again, “have you seen me leave a soft kiss on Cordelia’s cheek just to say bye or goodnight? NO!”

“Ahn!” the brunette admonished, “shh!” she added, putting a finger to her lips to make sure their loud-mouthed friend let her complete what she was trying to say. Looking back at Tara, “We’re all agreed on that, but who knows if Willow’s even realized it yet. From the information Anya managed to wean out of Xander, Willow’s never dated a woman before, right?” Tara slowly nodded her head, “so maybe she just needs it to be staring her in the face?”

Tara took a deep breath as she considered what Cordelia had said. She felt Anya tug the ice-cream out of her hand, and spoke “Maybe?”

She could feel Cordelia physically relax next to her, “The bottom line is, if she likes you then that makes her a teeny-tiny lesbo at the very least. Like you.” Cordelia smiled slowly at her friend, “So the real question, Tare, is… what you are going to do about it?”

Tara blinked slowly, “Well,” she paused thoughtfully, “I’m trying to get to know her better. I mean, I know I like the physical, because Willow’s obviously gorgeous.” The statement caused even Anya to smile, and passing the ice-cream back to Cordelia, she leaned her head on Tara’s shoulder as the blonde continued, “Today at Brito, I was asking her these generic questions which helped me get to know her better, because that’s really important. This is also a first for me… I don’t want to do something and then regret it. So I guess I’m just waiting to know that what I feel is really true and not a passing phase of infatuation…” she trailed off.

Anya cleared her throat, and asked gently, “And you’re a bit of a chicken?”

A wry smile spread across Tara’s lips, “Yeah…and that.” She went silent again for a couple of moments, and then spoke “I know this sounds ridiculous but, what if Willow does freak out with her being possibly-gay, or me having feelings for her. I’m not ready to lose her just yet…”

Cordelia passed her the ice-cream, “This is your decision Tare. We aren’t here to pressure you into doing something you aren’t prepared for… we’re just trying to help you figure things out when you need the assistance.”

Anya added, “We just want you to be happy, but yeah, you gotta do things on your own time.”

Tara smiled at her, and swallowed her mouthful of ice-cream. She knew her friends could be pushy, but she wouldn’t swap them for anything in the world.

*********************************************************************************

Willow picked up the phone on its second ring, “Hey Buff!”

“Hiya Will,” the redhead could hear the smile in her best friend’s voice, “how’s it going?”

“Mmm, I’m reading up some stuff on Frank O. Gehry & Associates, for tomorrow’s guest lecture” Willow mumbled, scrolling down the page open on her laptop. “You?”

“I had a busy day at work today. Apparently the station’s trying to rope in some new sponsors for a couple of special shows lined up, so I was Ms. Coordination for Gabby. It was fun!” Willow smiled at the enthusiasm in Buffy’s voice. “I saw Tara at work today…”

The effort Willow had been making to keep her head free of Tara thoughts went straight out the window, and she forgot all about the open laptop in front of her. “Oh?” she said, trying to sound cool even as she was aware of the quickening pace of her heart beat.

“Yeah, but she was pretty swamped with work, and then I had to head out to run some errands for Gabby, and by the time I got back, she’d left for the day. She did leave me a note saying she was sorry she’d missed me through the day though, which I thought was very sweet of her. She’s nice.” Willow smiled and nodded her head, till she realized that Buffy couldn’t see her, and said “Yeah…she really is.”

She could hear Buffy laugh, “My, my! Someone sound’s besotted!” The blonde didn’t want her friend to think she was laughing at her, so quickly continued, “Did you get to see her at handball practice?”

“Yup yup!” Willow smiled, letting the cool act drop, having decided that it was obviously not working. “We went to coffee afterwards…well, more like hot chocolate. Have you ever been to Brito?”

“Umm, nope?”

“Well, I have to take you. Their hot chocolate is sinfully good!”

“Hmm…was the company sinfully good too?”

“Always”, and this time Buffy could hear the smile in Willow’s voice. She was about to say something, when the conversation was interrupted by a beeping sound coming from her end of the line. “Hey Will? Xander’s trying to call me. I’ll call you right back ok?”

“Ok, bye”

“Bye!”, Willow heard, followed by a click. She knew she had to get her reading done, and was trying to clear her head of Tara-thoughts when the phone rang again, “Hey again Buff” she smiled.

The voice she heard back sounded too masculine to belong to Buffy, “Hey Willster”.

“So those testosterone shots ARE working then, eh Buff?” she smiled, and heard the blonde take an indignant sounding gasp. “Oh, you think you’re so funny, don’t you Rosenberg?” Buffy shot back.

Both women could hear Xander giggle on the third end of this conference call, “Speaking of funny Will, did you tell Buffy about how you breathed in the wrong way today?”

That shut the redhead right up, and for the next few moments she had to listen to Xander recall in frightening detail her little show on the handball court. When he’d finished, Buffy taunted, “Soooo Will…sweaty Tara huh?”

Willow felt another shot of arousal course through her body at the memory, and said in a weak voice, “Guys? Mercy?”

“Fine, fine!” Xander laughed, ‘But you’re not completely off the hook yet.” Willow let out a little huff, and Xander continued, “So…I spent the day hanging out with Anya at her workplace, and amongst the many things we spoke about, I managed to discover that Tara has never dated a woman before…”

“How’d you manage to get that bit of information?” Buffy asked, and you could hear sounds of a fridge door being shut from her end of the line.

“Uhhh,” Xander sounded like he was trying to remember, “you know, I can’t actually recall why we were talking about that in the first place…Anyway, the point is that we know that Tara has never dated a chick.”

“Oooo-kay, Willow said, letting that piece of information sink into her system, and Xander continued, “For that matter, Anya says that she was never really been keen on any of the men she dated either.”

Willow’s heart filled with hope as the three friends processed that news, and then Buffy spoke up, “Well, I hear that she’s never brought anyone to office parties or picnics either. Oh, except for her Mom and brother who went to the Christmas party with her last year. But yeah, no one else. And employees are specifically asked to bring partner’s with them, so that workers and the people they’re with can all get to know eachother.”

“So we’ve established that Tara’s never had an important relationship? Ever?” Willow asked.

“Well, Ahn has known her forever now, and that’s what I think she meant. So yeah, I guess that’s a correct assumption” Xander answered.

The only sound on the line for the next few moments was Buffy obviously chewing whatever she’d pulled out of the fridge. “Oooh!” Willow said, suddently remembering something, “She asked me to come to the beach this Sunday!”

“Oh right!” Buffy said, her mouth sounding full. Willow and Xander heard her chew for a few seconds and quickly swallow, “She invited Zak and me on the little note at work too! And I’ve already spoken to him about that, so we’re in.”

“As am I, since I’ll be coming with Anya” Xander finished.

“So wait…” Buffy sounded thoughtful, “Anya and Xander, Zak and me, and you and Tara? Doesn’t that sound a little but couple-y? Did she sound like she was asking you out on a date?”

Willow’s brow creased in a little frown as she though, “Umm, I don’t know? She asked if I was coming to practice tomorrow, which is a no-go because of school. And then she said she was taking the kids to the beach, and whether I’d like to go…So, I don’t know? And I’m sure Cordelia will be there too, so…?”

She was greeted by a few moments of silence, then Xander spoke, “Well, date or no date, it’s still a good thing, right?”

“Uh huh” Buffy agreed, “By the way Will, I forgot to ask. How was coffee time with Tara?”

“Hot chocolate time.” Willow corrected, “It was nice. We just…talked.”

“About?” Buffy persisted.

“Small talk?” Willow answered.

“Small talk’s important” Xander put in. “It’s the small things about a person that add together to make them who they are right? Therefore, important!”

“When did you turn into the Love Guru?” Buffy joked.

“Since my best friend went and fell for my girlfriend’s best friend” Xander laughed back.

Willow smiled at her friends’ playful banter, then blurted out “I love you guys”.

“We love you too Will” Buffy said, “Now all we have to do is figure out how to get you to say those words to Tara, right?”

“Uh huh” Willow replied, sounding hesitant.

“All in good time” Xander’s reassuring voice popped up, followed by a yawn. “Ok my lovely ladies, I better get to sleep. Talk to you’ll tomorrow?”

“Sounds good Xan” Buffy said. “I’m ready to crash too. Goonight guys”

“‘Night Buff” Willow and Xander chorused, and were about to hang up when Buffy said, “Oh, and Will?”

“Mmm?”

“Sweet sweaty Tara dreams!” she said quickly, sounding cheeky. “Night!”

The last thing Willow heard before both lines were cut was giggling. Rolling her eyes, she pressed the red button on her own cell-phone, and once again tried to clear her head of Tara-thoughts and concentrate on her reading.

You actually have to ask if we want more, is this where I insert the duh? I think it should be. That is absolutely amazing, I love the interactions with the friends.

And it wouldn't let me add you on facebook, I went that night and tried and it didn't work.

Hey two updates in such quick succession ... we are very happy with your efforts but wonder if your pining a little too much??? I hope you're ok! :D

I didn't get around to organising a Wick session ... ended up at a soccer function instead. And she looks like she's employed to dance there! :p

Square of Death - think of a square that has sides of 100m. You run one side then jog 3, run 2 sides then jog 2, run 3 sides then jog 1, then sprint all 4 sides. You then repeat this drill another 3 times (at least). During preseason we were also forced to sprint through really long grass (think about how hard that really is ... kind of like running through water). It was hell. But I'm glad to hear you've also experienced said hell. Are you playing handball at the moment? If so, how's the ankles?

And I just have to ask, what exactly is "accidental kissing"???

Well, I have been known to accidentally stumble and my lips just happen to land on someone else's mouth. It could happen! Actually I thought you kiss scene was just too cute for words. And I really liked your last update. I've had far too many similar conversations with my friends over the years. :D

What is this I hear about no bartering? I love to barter. You get something. I get something.

Anyhoo, this update cracked me up.

You kissed her on the cheek, and now she kissed you on the cheek. It’s no wonder your kind hasn’t figured out how to make babies yet!

I freakin' loved that. You've created such a great Anya. Her big heart shines through, but her humor and unique perspective are still in tact.

It's great that both Willow and Tara have such good friends to confide in. Both of them are so cute as they navigate the unfamiliar territory. I'm looking forward to where you take us next.

Chapter 81.

Postby Shai » Wed Mar 04, 2009 12:51 pm

The next update is ready, and awaiting your feedback! Thank you all for the positive comments you've been leaving after reading the updates :) Hopefully you'll have more of those after this one. And as always, your constructive criticism is very welcome too. For the record, asking for smoochies does NOT qualify as constructive criticism! :shy Lol!

I hope you're all well lovely Kittens. Cheers!

Zampsa1975 - Like I always say, friends are tres important. Sometimes you don't realize the part they play in our lives, and I've tried to write Willow and Tara's friends to show them as the kind that try to give their friends helpful nudges, but let them make the big decisions themselves.

asryadriani - I'm just fishing for compliments ;)

mixxie - Ah! A mind-reader! I promise that's coming up, but just not today!

Sandman78 - Promises are meant to be kept, ja? So glad you're enjoying your reading :) And yes, I'll admit that I do rock, hehe!

WillowRulez - Did the Prof like it then? I try to write the funny well, and I'm super glad it's being appreciated!

tacoda13 - The best friends are the kind that pick on your mercilessly, and are still always there everytime you need a shoulder to lean on! What say you?

writerfreak - Mmm, it's probably because I changed my privacy settings after a whole lot of random people started trying to add me! Will send you a request first thing tomorrow...right now it's update and zzzzz!

SmileyCC - Welcome to the thread :) And yes, I'm doing my best to keep the updates coming!

LittleBit - What can I say Hannah? I have a lot of spare time! And yes, I AM pining muchly, but there's nothing I can do about it right now, so I pour all my efforts into this fic! At least it gives me something to do :p I'd like to try that Square of Death thingie once...maybe at handball here? My coach'll love the idea, although I might lose some friends in the bargain! Ah well, leaving anyway! Haha! Are you drunk when this accidental kissing takes place?! :p

love_2003 - Buffy, Xander, Anya, Cordelia and Faith are important people in this fic, and I didn't want to reduce them to mere sidekicks. That's why I've done my best to flesh out personality's, etc, for them. You like?

ophelia11 - With the way the world economy's crumbling, we might just go back to the barter system pretty soon :p I like that you also realized that the girls in my fic ARE going through unchartered territory, which is why I'm taking my time and not writing "accidental kissing" or "lip bumping" as some people have suggested! And I think the lady after you liked your comments, because she's quoted them :)

xenalovesgabby - Hmm, was that a reply to me or ophelia11? And yes, Anya is a downright riot!

Ok then, here's 81.... *whew*

Chapter 81.

Tara walked out of the changing rooms, fishing into her gym bag for her cell phone and glasses. She walked slowly since her right ankle was a little sore after Coach Giles had pushed her a little harder than the rest during the pre-game warm up and post-game warm down. The blonde knew that he was doing it to come to his own conclusion on the endurance level of her injured foot, so she didn’t mind going the extra mile to prove herself to the coach. That being said, she’d decided to wrap the crepe-bandage back around her ankle after her shower, since it felt like her foot could use the extra support after being pushed to the limit. Besides, she didn’t want to risk having to limp around again.

Phone and sunnies in hand, Tara walked up to Anya and Cordelia, who were already changed and talking to Coach Giles. The trio looked up as she approached, and it was the coach who spoke, “I think we should try out some jump shots tomorrow. How does that sound?”

Tara positively beamed, “Absolutely!” as Anya groaned, “There go my hands…”

Coach Giles was smiling as well, but insisted again, “We take it as slow as you need, ok?”

Tara nodded and repeated, in a more somber tone, “Absolutely.”

“Alright then, girls,” Coach Giles spoke, walking over to his own gym bag, “Till tomorrow then?”

All three women nodded, and said their bye’s as they turned to walk away. Xander, who had been sitting on a bench while Anya and Cordelia had chatted to Coach Giles about that day’s session and waited for Tara to emerge from the changing rooms, joined them half-way to the doors. “Get any reading done?” Anya asked him, as Xander wrapped his arm around her shoulder.

The brown-haired boy shook his head, “Nope, you’re too much of a distraction!”

Anya tsked, “Well, I guess someone can’t come watch practice tomorrow then…”

Tara smiled, but tuned out their good-natured bickering as her gaze fell on her cell phone, which was saying that she had two text messages. She clicked the “Read” button, and the first one turned out to be from Gabby, who was informing her that their meeting with a prospective sponsor had been brought back from 4 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The blonde wore her sunglasses and quickly sent Gabby a reply confirming that she would be there, and then deleted her colleague’s text. Cordelia was the first to reach the doors of the stadium, and had just pushed one open when Tara’s inbox opened again, and her heart did a little skip when she saw the second message was from Willow Rosenberg.

Her heart followed up the skip by picking up pace, and she realized that her thumb was trembling slightly as it inched its way to the ‘Read’ button. After what seemed like ages, she clicked.

“I’ve met some really boring English men in my short lifetime, but this guy from Frank O. Gehry takes the cake. I think they only promoted him to a Senior Achitect so they could give him his own cabin, and not have him bore the other architects to death. Anyway, what are you doing? How was practice. Uh, is?”

As Tara stared down at the text, she felt a smile start to form on her lips. She scrolled back up to the top of the message, and began to reread it from the beginning. She’d just gotten to the end, when she heard someone distinctly clear their throat. Looking up, Tara realized that without any real thinking on her part, her legs had followed her friends all the way to her jeep. She guessed that Cordelia must have been the one who’d cleared her throat, since she was looking at her quite expectantly with one eyebrow arched. Feeling like a deer caught in headlights, Tara meekly half-lifted the hand holding her cellphone and said “Text.”

“Important enough to tune-out the physically present population?” Cordelia asked, and received a nod from the blushing blonde. Tara watched as her two-best friends shared knowing looks, and was thankful when Xander spoke up, “So, ready to drive us then?”

Tara could have kissed Xander right then, “Yup yup”. She glanced at her phone one last time before putting it in the left pocket of her jeans, and climbed into the drivers seat of her jeep. Cordelia sat beside her while she started the engine, and Anya and Xander chose to stick together at the back. Turning the radio on, Tara began the drive to the mall with her friends. She knew that Anya and Cordelia had figured out who the text was from, and from the corner of her eye, she could tell that Cordy was dying to ask her about it. Anya was too occupied with holding Xander’s hand to be too concerned at the moment, and once again, the blonde was thankful that Willow’s best friend was there to keep both of her’s quiet!

She looked at Cordelia out of the corner of her eye again, and saw that the brunette was still studying her with a thoughtful look on her face. Finally the taller woman spoke, “Soooooooo….” Cordy started, still looking straight at Tara, and then unexpectedly turning to look at the couple at the back, “Xander!”

Tara frowned slightly, wondering where this was going, and heard Xander absent-mindedly ask “Hmm?”

“You’re best friends with Buffy and Willow huh?”

Now Tara knew exactly where this conversation was going, and wanted to put an end to it right then and there. To be honest though, there was another part of her that was more than happy to go along with whatever Cordelia was doing. Tara decided that she’d figure out whether she loved or hated her two girls later on, and tuned back into the concentration, keeping her eyes on the road. “Yup”, Xander smiled. “Ever since we were old enough to understand what best friends are really supposed to be like.”

“Awww” Anya cooed, snuggling closer into her boyfriend’s shoulder. Cordelia persisted, “What’s it like? Having two girls as your closest friends I mean.”

The brown-haired boy seemed to consider this for a moment, “Hmm, it’s the only thing I’ve ever known, so I don’t really have anything else to compare it to… if you understand what I mean?” All three women nodded, so he continued, “I’ve known Will since we were in grade school. We started off sitting next to eachother in the 3rd grade, but barely spoke, until one day some kids were picking on me because I’m, uh, dyslexic, and that was the day our teacher had figured it out.” He looked at Anya as he said the last bit, revealing a part of him she didn’t know about yet. His girlfriend merely smiled softly and encouraged him to go on, “So yeah, they were calling me a retard, when Willow Rosenberg walks up to my side and launches into a rant about how the politically correct word is ‘Mentally Challenged’, and how I wasn’t mentally challenged anyway, and just had a learning disability. I remember standing right next to her wondering if she’d stop to take a breath at any point, and I swear she didn’t till she stopped a good 3 minutes later.” He smiled foldly at the memory, “Of course by then there was a stunned silence all around us, so Willow grabbed me by the arm to pull me away with her, and that’s how it’s been ever since.”

The three women sat processing the story in their minds, Tara deciding again that Willow was positively the nicest person she’d ever met, and nothing and noone could compare to her. Xander could swear he heard a hint of…something… in Tara’s voice as she spoke, “She really is something huh?” He caught her gaze in the rearview mirror, and smiled his agreement. The jeep pulled up at a traffic light, and Anya asked, “What about Buffy?”

“Buffy joined our group of two when we were 13. She just came and sat down with Will and me during lunch, and that was that. Umm, I did have a teeny-tiny really massive crush on her in the beginning,” he smiled sheepishly at his girlfriend, who looked amused at this latest confession, “but that kind of passed when I sat through lunch after lunch listening to her running commentary on the other guys at school!” Everyone laughed at that, “People even had a name for us, The Misfits. I think it was because all three of us were so different from one another. I mean, there was Buffy the soccer star, the Queen of the Geeks Willow and me, the, uh, boy?” he smiled again. There was a comfortable silence as the jeep began to move again, till Cordelia asked, “Didn’t Willow check out the boys with Buffy?”

Xander quickly glanced at Tara, who’s gaze was firmly fixed on the road ahead, “No, not really. She actually spent more time than Buffy did with the cool jocks, who always needed her help with school, but I don’t really remember her talking about them much. Now that I think of it, even Oz just kinda appeared out of nowhere.” He reflected on this for a few seconds, and sounded like he’d just realized what he would say next, “They were actually really different, those two. Looking back, it was doomed from the start, with their different outlooks and hobbies and everything…”

“It’s ok to like different things though. You yourself just said that the three of you’ll are different and still best friends”, Tara commented matter-of-factly, turning into the parking lot at the mall.

“Oh, I completely agree,” Xander nodded, “but you have to do things together too, and try and involve each other in your individual interests. I only remember Oz going off to band-practice and gigs, and Willow hanging out with, well, me and Buff. They only went to the movies or a meal every-so-often, but that’s gotta get monotonous. Wait, I have a better way to explain what I mean…they were fundamentally different, which isn’t so great in a relationship.”

Tara couldn’t argue with that statement, and nodded her agreement as the car slowly pulled to a stop in a parking space. Leaving the other three behind, she hopped out and walked over to get her ticket, and a few seconds later caught up with them as they walked to the mall’s doors. The quartet entered, and as they got on the escalator Tara pulled out her cellphone and went straight to the messages. Opening up Willow’s text, she quickly punched in a reply, “WAS at practice, AM at the mall with Ahn and Cordy now. There’s a brown-haired boy called Xander with us. Know him?” Clicking on ‘Send’, she watched the envelope disappear, then pocketed her phone again.

Anya was telling Xander how she needed to get a new pair of indoor shoes for handball, so when the group got off the escalator on the first floor, they made their way towards the mega sports store ‘Athlete’. They’d just walked into the store when Tara’s phone beeped again, and she checked it. “Yes, for far too long really. Haha! I wish I was at the mall with you guys too! Anyway, I shan’t depress myself with thoughts like that whilst stuck in Guest Lecture Hell. How’s your foot?”

Tara grinned and hit ‘Reply’, “Good! Coach says I can try some jump shots tomorrow, woo hoo!” She heard Anya call out to her, and looked up to see her friend beckoning her over. She quickly hit ‘Send’, and held the phone in her hand as she walked over to Anya. The goalkeeper was inspecting an Adidas shoe, and wanted Cordelia and Tara to tell her what they thought of it. Xander, who didn’t have much knowledge on the working’s of sports shoes had walked away to browse through the men’s shoes. Tara was running her fingers over the sole when her phone beeped again. Without looking up, Cordelia commented, “Text flirting?”

Tara turned red, “Uhh, no, Willow’s just bored in class and was asking me about practice.”

“Mmm hmm…” Anya commented, and Tara was amazed at how her friends managed to convey exactly what they were thinking without even having to form actual words. She made sure to give her friends her opinion on the shoe before checking the text. “A woo and a hoo for the jump shots! Ok, dying here! Entertain me! Tell me something I don’t know about you.” Once again, the blonde was left staring at her phone, and couldn’t help but hope that more than simple boredom had prompted the redhead to ask her that question.

She felt a pull on her arm, and looked up to see Anya gently guiding her by the arm. “Sit. Flirt. Just make sure to give me your proper opinion when I bring a shoe to you!”, and with that, she indicated an empty chair beside where they'd stopped and walked back to the shoe section. ‘Ok, definitely love my girls’ Tara decided, and promptly sat down to send a reply.

“I used to have a pretty bad stutter as a child. I still do, but it only shows up when I’m really nervous or scared. Thankfully though, I’ve learned how to bring it under control pretty quick. Your turn.” She sent the message, and looked around for her friends. Anya was still browsing the women’s shoes section, and had obviously shortlisted the Adidas shoe since she was holding on to it while she checked other ones. Cordelia and Xander seemed to have wandered off, and despite craning her neck every which way, Tara couldn’t spot them from where she was seated.

Her phone beeped again, and Tara looked down to check the text, which by now she knew would be from Willow. “I hate Barbie dolls, and can’t understand why anyone would want to play with them. When I’d get them as birthday presents, I’d take them apart, and then group them according to body parts. Ok, that sounds scarier written than it does in my head! Uhh, you still there?!”

Despite herself, Tara let out a giggle at that, and looked up to see Anya looking over at her. When they made eye contact, Anya rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide her smile before turning back to the shoes. Tara typed, “*cough*Psychopath*cough* I was never death to all Barbie’s, but preferred physical sport to staying indoors. One of my happiest memories is from when I was 7, and managed to score a touchdown while playing football with Donny and his fellow ‘big guys’.” She sent the message on it’s way, and briefly wished she was an airwave.

“Great, I’m officially going crazy now” she muttered to herself.

“Oh, that’s a given” Anya said drily, walking up to her with 2 new shoes in her hands. She handed one over to Tara, who flexed is this way and that before turning it over to run her fingers over the sole. “Hmm, this one seems pretty good” Tara murmured, and took the other shoe from Anya’s grasp. Neither girl commented when Tara’s phone beeped again, and after giving it a thorough inspection, Tara passed the second shoe back to Anya, “This one’s the best so far. It’s flexible, and the sole looks good. Try it on?”

Anya smiled, “Thanks Tare”, and went off to ask a member of the staff for the shoe’s pair, so she could try both on. The blonde checked the message, “Why Ms. Maclay, you should get that nasty cough checked out! And awww at the cute memory! I was never one for competitive sports, but I do enjoy kicking a ball around every now and then, or spending some quality time in a swimming pool. So, what are you guys doing at the mall sans moi?”

Tara heard Cordelia’s voice, and looked up to see her sharing a laugh with Anya over something. The brunette was holding on to at least half a dozen item’s of clothing, and Tara couldn’t stop herself from smiling at how predictable her shopoholic friend was before turning her attention back to her own reply, “We’re at Athlete, where Anya’s shopping for a new pair of handball shoes that she wants to break in before National’s. Cordelia looks like she’s buying one piece of everything this store owns, and Xander’s disappeared in here.”

Tara sent the text, and saw Anya trying on the pair of shoes. Standing up, she made her way over to her friends just as Anya stood up, and walked a few paces up and down in the shoes. “Feel good?” Cordelia asked, and Anya took a few more steps before nodding, “Yup. They’re really comfortable, and fit well.” She continued to walk in them, moving her foot this way and that, when Tara’s phone beeped again. Cordelia gave her another knowing look, and then walked off in the direction of the changing rooms to try on all the stuff she was currently holding in her arms. The blonde checked her message as she walked back to the chair she’d been sitting in, “Xander’s disappeared eh? Does Athlete happen to have any issues of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Edition lying around?! And why aren’t you buying anything?”

Tara physically shrugged at the text question, and replied “There’s nothing I really want.” She paused a second, and then typed slowly, “Besides, this is more fun.” The blonde stared at the message for a few moments, before hitting send. She sat there with her cellphone in her lap, drumming her fingers on the chairs arms as she waited for Willow’s reply. When the message arrived, she clicked on ‘Read’ before the phone had even stopped beeping, “I hear ya Tare. How long are you going to be at the mall for? Maybe I can run screaming from here and see you there?”

Tara looked at the time on her phone and sighed as she clicked ‘Reply’, “Unfortunately I have to leave for work in 20 minutes. I think the other three are going to be around though, if you wanted to hang out with them?”

Anya walked up to her while she sat there waiting for a reply, and told her she was buying the pair she’d tried on. Tara had opted to stay where she was while her friend went to pay for the shoes and try and hunt down her boyfriend, and was willing her phone to beep when it did, “Nah, I’ll just stay here if you aren’t going to be there. I’ll see you at your practice session tomorrow? Maybe after I could take you to this cool little place I know that serves the greatest hot chocolate in the world!?”

Tara’s heart practically swelled as the realization dawned on her that Willow was clearly impying that she liked spending time with her, and was not willing to make the effort to come if she wasn’t going to be there. This time the blonde didn’t even bother to hide the full-blown smile that had taken over her face as she typed out, “Smarty-pants! Definitely practice. But I have a paper due Friday, and need to get cracking on it after practice. Would you like to come over instead or something?” She sent the message on to Willow-land.

Tara looked up in time to see Cordelia make her way back from the changing rooms, and head to join Anya in line. The shorter woman seemed to have spptted Xander somewhere, and was waving him over when Tara’s phone beeped again, “Sounds like a plan. I’m sure I could catch up on some reading while you work on your paper. Ok, so, I finish class at 12:45, and will see you straight at the stadium! Uh-oh, he’s coming this way! Over and out!”

The blonde grinned and her fingers moved of their own accord, “Aye aye! Have a good day Will!” Standing up, she pocketed her phone and walked towards the trio who were almost at the front of the line by then. She knew the two women would know the vague reason for her joyous expression and want to know the exact reason, but was sure they wouldn’t ask around Xander. As it turned out, she was right, and although she received smirks from Anya and Cordelia, they didn’t make any other coments. In fact, Tara was the first to speak, “Anyone else feel like a chocolate milkshake before I leave to earn my keep at work?!”

Hey your pain is turning into some fabulous writing ... but I'm not such a bitch that I would want you to be in pain and pining just to get a terrific story out of you! But if it takes your mind off things and makes the time pass faster than by all means bury yourself in your writing! :D

You actually want to do the square of death??? You're right you'll lose friends fast! :D lol Having said that ... the first time you manage to do it and not feel like you're having a heart attack is a good day .... but patience is key! :D

I refuse to blame drunken behaviour for possible accidental kissing ... but I and the other party involved may well have been drunk at the time! :p

So onto the fic ... I really loved this update. I loved the whole cute/sweet text flirting - I mean who hasn't done text flirting these days?? I love how their friends are actively participating in getting them together ... it's all so .... well sort of romantic! And not the whole hot and sweaty romance ... but like old school romance. Where a beautiful soul and mind connect. Ok I've been reading too much Traci Harding ... going to bed now! :D

Take care of yourself and I'll chat to you later! :D

Okay, yes. I recognize that this is uncharted territory. HOWEVER...I still think an unexpected/accidental kiss can occur without being totally cliche. :P It would save them overthinking the kiss and spontaneously combusting. ;-) Your way is more fun even though it keeps me on the edge of my seat.

Kissing convo aside, I loved this chapter. I find with the frequent updates, I care less and less when this elusive kiss happens. The text flirting was very cute. Obviously both of them are way better texters than I am, because I only manage a few key strokes before my thumbs end up on the wrong keys and it ends up a garbled mess. Xander was absent for a lot of the texting, but I'm curious if he'll put two and two together once he talks to Willow.

Looking forward to the late night hang-out session yet to come. Should make for interesting conversations if nothing else.

Take care!

Shai-
I really like this chapter. I love the way you portray the movement of their going to the mall and show the intimacy of texting. I mean between the two of them, there's a definite text and sub-text. Maybe that's it: they're sub-texting. They're both being very on-the-table or as on-the-table as they can be without coming out and saying, "I like like you..." They're wisely getting to know each other and really liking what they find out.

What shocks me: What are the odds of 4 people being totally able to keep a secret like this? You've got Cordy, Anya, Xander, and Buffy who all have interactions with each other and with Tara and no one has let the cat out yet but how long could that go on?

Thanks for the frequent updates.

Chapter 82.

Postby Shai » Mon Mar 09, 2009 6:33 am

Hello Kittens :)

I actually worked on this update for a few days, which is a change from my type out and post attitude. I think it's because I took a while figuring out what I wanted said in this one (yes, I was going to add some small stuff, but decided to save it for a later update), and also because my concentration kept wandering all over the place while I worked! It's ready now, and longer than usual. As usual, I haven't read through it, so please pardon any typos, and feel free to point them out to me for correction. So yeah, hopefully you'll like this one :)

Cheers!

MelCar19 - Hello :) Well, it's always nice to see new fces in here! I hope you enjoy this update too :)

Zampsa1975 - There will be NO accidental lip-action! :shy I'd like our girls to know what they want before they get there. Hopefully, you'll stick around for that!

WillowRulez - Well, I hope your Prof likes it then :) And ja, Anya's great huh?

writerfreak - Add is done ma'am :) And well, the updates were kinda overdue :p Glad they're being appreciated!

LittleBit - The fic is all I have for the next 2 and a bit months, so enjoy ;) I totally understand what you mean about the feeling of accomplishment you get when you prove your physical prowess to yourself. I actually start kickboxing again this week, and might even start handball once a week from next week. I definitely plan on playing in Brissy :) No matter what you've been reading, I am a fan of old-school, and I'm glad it's reflected in this fic! Haha, and I hear you on the text-flirting. Sometimes it's all you've got!

ophelia11 - Edge of seat = Good. Accidental kiss = Not good! Capish?! Lol! And I am sooooo happy the updates make you think less about "the kiss"! All in good time Laura! In the meantime, just enjoy getting there!

redjassy - Most people write Xander as a clueless goofball, and I've tried to change that slightly. I mean, there has to be a reason Willow likes him so much, right? I'm trying to add a bit of maturity to him in my fic. As for the communication, yes, the girls cant be around one another all the time, so I put in the text flirting as a way for them to know that they're both thinking of each other. Been there in real life too ;)

JustSkipIt - Yup, getting to know one another is important. Haha, I was actually thinking of 'sub-text' when I wrote the update! Great minds and all that ;) As for the 4 friends not telling, well, let's not forget that Anya has a strong sense of loyalty towards Tara, and Xander has the same towards Willow. Those two have also not been together long enough to warrant dishing on a best friend's deepest, darket secrets. That in my mind is what has kept the secret in the bag for so long. Everything does have it's limit though, what say?! *grins*

tacoda13 - Great that you liked this update too :) Funny and cute were extra treats ;)

Now....

Spoilers - Nada
Pairing - W/T, A/X, and the rest are pretty much made up by yours truly.
Settings - AU. Tara's a jock, and meet's Willow during a handball tournament.
Rating - PG 13 at the most (Yes, I swear it will change some day!)

Chapter 82.

Willow walked into the handball area at a quarter past 1, and it didn’t take her long to spot Tara. She stood rooted to the spot as her eyes drank in the sight of the sweat covered blonde chasing after Zak at breakneck speed. The tall blonde boy was dribbling the handball as he himself ran towards a goal that was being fiercely guarded by an alert-looking Anya. Tara managed to catch up with Zak at the 9 meter line, and after beating him to the penalty mark by half a second, she turned on the 6 so her back was to her keeper, and jumped with her arms straight up in the air. Willow realized that Tara had correctly judged where Zak would be attempting his lay-up from, because she’d leapt up right in front of him, forcing him to alter his angle at the last minute. As it turned out, he released the ball, with considerably less force than he could have, at an angle that was obviously not his first choice, and Anya managed to split in time to put her foot between the ball and the back of her own net.

“Yeah!” Tara yelled out in delight, and pumped her fist before turning around to go high-five Anya, who was back on her feet. The move had prompted applause from Coach Giles, and both women looked obviously pleased with themselves. Zak waited for Tara to get out of the keeper’s area, and playfully pretended to strangle her out of mock-frustration. Willow couldn’t understand how Tara looked more gorgeous every time she saw her, but she certainly wasn’t complaining. The blonde was wearing a pair of tiny but well-fitting black shorts and a sleeveless red jersey that said her name at the back in gold lettering. Willow was unable to make out the emblem on the front of the jersey, in part because it was hard to tell from a distance, but mainly because the emblem was right over the left side of Tara’s chest, which brought Willow’s attention to different parts of the blonde’s anatomy. Realizing where she was looking was enough to snap Willow out of it, and after looking around guiltily to make sure no one had caught her perving, the redhead made her way to a row of bleachers, muttering under her breath, “Oh yeah, definitely gay.”

For the next thirty minutes Willow perved and stared in peace, marveling at the sweat glistening on Tara’s arms every time she raised her arm to shoot, the way her thigh muscles flexed as she ran, how her ponytail swished this way and that as she ran…The visuals left the redhead squirming in her seat, and she congratulated herself on remembering to wear panty liner that day. Willow also noticed that Tara would glance in the general direction of the bleachers every so often, slightly squinting her eyes as she tried to look beyond the brightness of the court into the surrounding darkness. The redhead knew that the blonde was trying to seek her out, and was also sure Tara had no idea if she was even there yet. The fact that she was looking though, was enough for Willow. She was staring at Tara, when suddenly out of nowhere a thought hit crossed her mind : What would Tara do if it was just her and Willow out there on the court, and Willow pushed her up to the goal-post and lowered her head to run her tongue along Tara’s sweaty neck? The redhead’s throat went dry at her own lust-filled daydream as she imagined what it would be like to taste Tara’s skin, and Willow was sure that she’d die and go straight to heaven after the bliss of that opportunity.

Willow continued to follow Tara with her eyes, and knew without a hint of doubt that she wanted the blonde. She’d spoken briefly to Xander the previous night, and he’d told her that Tara seemed supremely happy before leaving for work earlier in the afternoon. That’s when Willow had really allowed herself to believe, really believe, for the first time that maybe what she was feeling wasn’t one-way traffic after all. All through the first hour of the guest-lecture, the redhead had sat there wondering what Tara was up to, and when she could no longer stop herself she gave in and sent the blonde a text message. The redhead wouldn’t have cared if the man was revealing the secrets of the universe as all her attention was focused on the back-and-forth texts between Tara and herself, and when the blonde had messaged saying she was enjoying the text-chat with Willow, a thousand-watt smile lit up the redhead’s face. Even the curious looks she was getting from her fellow classmates wasn’t enough to wipe the grin from Willow’s lips, and that was probably why the lecturer had asked Willow her views on the new trend of eco-friendly architecture. Luckily for Willow, she’d made it a point to read up enough on the Frank O. Gehry company’s preferred styles of construction to have a fair idea of what he wanted to hear! The lecturer had looked surprised at her answer, and gave her a slight nod before continuing to drone on, leaving Willow to once again lose herself in Tara-thoughts.

Willow had lain in bed at night, and had promised herself that she would find a way to tell Tara how she felt. And she’d do it before she spontaneously combusted from the mental exertion of going back and forth in her mind about how Tara felt about her! Willow’s quickening pulse at the mere mention of Tara’s name had clued her in to the fact that she needed to do it quickly, because it was evident that the more she got to know Tara, the more she liked her. She’d resolved that if she was going to get her heart broken, then it was best if it were to happen before she discovered even more lovable-traits in the woman.

Willow heard the final buzzer go off, brining the practice game to an end, and saw Coach Giles gather the girls around him. She continued watching Tara, who in turn was intently following the coach’s critique of that day’s session. The redhead’s thoughts wandered again, but this time she was wondering how you broached the subject of liking a girl, when you weren’t even sure if the girl liked girls. She half-frowned at the complicated mess better known as her thoughts, but realized that somewhere they did make sense. This wasn’t going to be like being rejected by any other guy. This was potentially being rejected by the first girl, and maybe the only girl, she’d ever liked. And if it was a bad rejection then not only could she lose Tara forever, but it would probably even affect her future interest in women.

She took a deep breath and tried to clear her mind, as Tara nodded and broke away from the group of girls, making her way over to a low ramp-like board that was lying on the court just beyond one of the goal posts. When the girl bent down to pick up the board, Willow allowed her gaze to linger on the perfect roundness of the blonde’s bottom, and sighed with sheer longing. She watched Tara straighten and walk to the 6 meter line, and place the board just before it at an inner’s normal position. The blonde beckoned Anya to stand guard at the goal, and then moved back to a few paces beyond the 9 meter line herself. Willow’s interest was piqued as Tara called for the ball, and broke into a half-sprint towards Anya, dribbling the ball as she ran. On passing the 9 meter line, she grasped the ball in her right hand, and started her lay-up. Willow counted the first two steps, and saw Tara land her left foot squarely on the board with her third step. The redhead heard the board squeak and watched it depress under Tara’s weight, only then realizing that it was a spring board. She watched in absolute fascination as Tara’s bent left knee started to straighten while her right arm rose above her head, and for a moment it looked like Tara was flying forwards through the air with her arm poised to shoot. Less than 5 steps ahead of her, Anya took a step forward from the goal line and flung herself up in the air, spreading her arms and legs wide as she used her full body to try and block Tara’s angles. The keeper’s attempt was futile, since Tara held onto the ball till the last possible second, and opted to go for a sharp angle that was completely out of Anya’s reach. The ball zipped past the goalie and into the far left corner even before Anya’s feet were back on the ground.

Willow watched Tara run past the keeper to fish the ball out of the net, and was able to read Anya’s lips saying “Lucky shot”, before she thumped Tara’s back in silent praise on the perfect angle. Willow stared at the smiling blonde Goddess who had captured her heart without even having to try too hard, ‘Yeah, she might reject me’, she thought, ‘but what if she doesn’t?’

She allowed that thought to flourish and grow in the quiet of her mind as Tara showed the youngsters Anne and Reese how to use the springboard like she’d just demonstrated.

Tara finished her warm down a little after 2 o’clock, and walked over to her gym kit at the side of the court. Standing up, Willow grabbed her backpack and made her way over to the blonde, who looked up as the redhead emerged from the darkness. “There you are!” Tara smiled, and waved her right hand that was holding onto her cell phone at Willow. “I was just checking to see if you’d texted to cancel or something.”

The redhead realized that she probably looked too happy to see Tara, but didn’t care as she grinned and made her way up to the blonde, “Nope nope. Right here ma’am.” She leaned into Tara and wrapped her arms around her, resting her hands on the back of an obviously damp jersey. Willow had to stop herself from sighing with pleasure when Tara’s arms wrapped around her in return, and as always, she thought the hug was way too short when they pulled apart.

“Hey Red,” she heard, and looked up to see Faith, Emily, Anya and Cordelia coming over. The brunette reached over to hug Willow, and murmured into her ear, “fancy seeing you here!” before pulling back.

“Hey guys” she smiled, and couldn’t help but notice that she actually felt really relaxed around the women, despite Faith’s obvious teasing. Still smiling, she addressed Anya, “I hear you forbade Xander from coming to practice today”.

The shorter blonde smiled in good humour, “That’s right. I like him now, but I’m sure how crazy I’d be about him if he was a 45 year old with a big fat beer gut, no job and more knowledge of handball than Human Resources” she winked.

All five women laughed at that, and then Cordelia asked Tara, “So, ready to get cracking on that long-overdue assignment of yours?”

A faint blush visibly spread across Tara’s cheeks as she looked at Cordelia, which Willow thought was strange since it was such a simple question. She noticed that Faith and Emily had also noticed the blush, and all three women turned their gazes to the tall brunette, who looked completely innocent as she waited for Tara’s answer. Willow looked back at the blonde to see her slowly blink her beautiful blue eyes, and finally nod at her friend.

“Good” Cordelia said, her tone still friendly, “I hope you manage to finish it today. You’ve already put it off long enough.”

Willow was sure that she was missing something when she saw a hint of amusement pass over Tara’s face, before Anya called her over to the goal to point something out. “I’ll be right back” Tara said, looking at Willow before jogging over to where Anya was. The redhead nodded, and was engrossed in a conversation about the advantages of the springboard with the three other women when Tara and Anya returned. “…so basically, it helps you perfect your lay-up, and learn to hold your posture in the air” Emily finished. Willow looked to her right to see a still pink-looking Tara waiting for her to be done, “Ready to go?”

Green eyes couldn’t help but dart to Anya to fathom the reason behind what from the looks of it might have been another round of blushing for Tara, but the goalie was just reaching down to pick up her kit. “Okay…but don’t you want to shower first?” Willow asked.

Tara shook her head, “Nah, I’ll just shower when I get home.” Willow nodded, and after everyone said their goodbyes, she and Tara left for the latter’s home while the other girl’s headed to the showers. The blonde reached the stadium doors a step before Willow, and holding it open, she gestured for the redhead to pass. Willow smiled her thanks, and waited for Tara to join her before following her lead to the jeep.

“So,” she said, getting into the passenger seat, “is this paper of yours really long overdue?”

Tara looked genuinely amused as she pushed the stick into gear, “Not really. Cordy just exaggerates!” Willow watched her right-hand work the gear, and her gaze fell on the pair of tanned legs just beyond. She quickly jerked her head so she was once again staring at the road before them, but Tara had caught the rushed movement. “You ok?” she asked, concerned.

“Yeah,” Willow said, and brought up a hand to rub her right cheek, “I thought I felt a bug fly into me or something” she lied. “Anyway,” she quickly changed the subject, “what’s your paper on?”

“Whether or not substance abuse should be legalized in sport” Tara said.

“Isn’t that kind of a no-brainer? It’s cheating, right?” Willow asked.

“Mmm, not really. I mean yes, right now it’s cheating,” Tara said, slowing to a halt at a red-light and turning to look into green eyes, “but there are a lot of psychologists who believe that letting everyone use performance enhancing drugs would actually level the playing field.”

Willow thought that over for a few seconds, “That’s kind of interesting” she finally admitted. “What’s your take on it?”

Tara glanced at the lights, which were still red, “Well, I think substance abuse makes things easier, which is contradictory to everything sport stands for. I mean, as an athlete, you train really hard,” the light changed to green, and Tara pushed the car into gear, “and when you win, it’s all that effort and hard work that’s gone into the win that makes it all the more special. I think legalizing substance abuse would take away from the beauty and the overall experience of being an athlete.” Quickly glancing at Willow, she saw the redhead nodding and listening, so she continued, “Of course, my paper has to be written from a psychologists point of view, so what my professor really wants to read about is my view on whether an athlete would think he had more of a chance of winning if his physical prowess was equal to that of his opponents.”

“Do you?”

This time it was Tara’s turn to think it over, “To an extent, yes. Mainly though, that’s just a pre-match psychological boost. There is another extreme to that though. Um, I think that if an athlete goes into a match thinking that they’re on a level playing field and he starts getting his butt kicked say, 10 minutes into the competition, then he’d probably lose hope a lot quicker. And at that moment, a lack of faith in yourself can be more psychologically damaging than anything else.”

“Interesting…” Willow said, and sat back in her seat to think about what Tara had just said. They drove in amicable silence for a few minutes, and Willow couldn’t help but sneak glances at Tara’s gorgeous legs. She noticed a faint scar on the blonde’s thigh, and before she could stop herself asked “How’d you get the scar on your thigh?”

‘Ok, now she knows your were staring at her legs dummy!’ she thought, panicking inside but maintaining a calm exterior as she waited for Tara’s answer. The blonde looked down at her lap, and then looked at Willow as if studying her before focusing her attention back on the road, “I don’t know really. Mom says I was climbing a tree as a kid and managed to cut myself pretty bad, but I honestly have no recollection of it.” She glanced back at the topic of conversation, and then up at the road again.

“It looks…it looks kinda cool really” Willow said softly, as they neared Tara’s house. The blonde just looked at her with a quirked eyebrow, and Willow felt the need to reassure, “No really…it adds character” she shrugged. Tara didn’t say anything, but as Willow studied her profile she saw the blonde smile, and the redhead gave herself an invisible pat on the back. A good one minute later Tara said quietly, eyes still looking straight ahead, “With the amount of sport I’ve played, I have a lot more scars than just that one…” For the first time in a long time, Willow Rosenberg couldn’t think of anything to say. And it felt good. She glanced over at Tara, and there it was again…a hint of a blush. ‘I definitely can’t be reading this all wrong’ Willow thought.

A couple of seconds later they were parking outside Tara’s building, and the blonde asked, “What will you be reading while I write my masterpiece?” She reached into the jeep to grab her bag, and slung the kit over her shoulder as she walked towards the front of the building. Willow followed a step behind, patting her backpack, “Oh, I’ve brought my laptop along too. We’ve been asked to write an essay based on yesterday’s lecture, and the students with the three best essays land a summer internship with Frank O. Gehry’s.”

Even though Tara’s back was to her while she unlocked the door, Willow could clearly hear the laughter in her voice as she asked, “So you’ll be writing about all the boring English men you’ve come across in your lifetime then? Or will you be concentrating on Xander’s love of Sport’s Illustrated?”

“Oh, you think you’re soooo funny don’t you!” Willow huffed, but couldn’t hide her own smile when she heard the blonde giggle. “If you must know, we have to write about environmentally friendly architecture, and ecologically friendly construction.” She could still see the sparkle in Tara’s eyes as the blonde turned, “Stairs?”

“Sure” Willow nodded, and followed the sway of Tara’s hips all the way up to her apartment. The blonde let them in, dropping her kit to the floor and walking to the kitchen. “Ok, jokes apart, that’s kinda interesting. Do you have any ideas?”

Willow made her way to the couch and plonked herself down, “Yeah. I personally think harvesting solar energy is the way to go. And recycling your own water. Those kind of things are a bit more expensive to set up, but they’re much, much cheaper in the long run.”

Tara walked back from the kitchen with a glass of iced tea each for Willow and herself. She walked over to Willow and handed her one glass, which the redhead took with thanks. Tara smiled and sipped from her glass, “That makes sense. Last year Mom got her pool changed to a salt-water one, and said it would be more beneficial down the line. Where’s the internship going to be based? LA?”

Willow sipped her own drink and shook her head, “Nope, Sunnydale. They’re working on a new apartment complex in the western outskirts, and it’ll be a good learning experience for a student. And of course, it’s never too early to network” she smirked.

“Aye! Well, I hope you kick-ass with this essay!” Tara agreed, raising her glass in a silent toast before bringing it to her lips and downing it in one go. “Ok, I’m going to shower. Help yourself to anything from the fridge, or the TV, or whatever, and I’ll be out in 15, ok?” Willow nodded, so she smiled, picked up her kit again and walked into the bedroom.

The redhead’s eyes followed Tara all the way to the bedroom, and when the blonde was out of sight Willow fell back into the softness of the couch. She turned to stare at the backpack lying beside her, and considered starting up her laptop, but then vetoed the idea. ‘Why bother when I know I’m only going to be thinking about how Tara’s naked in the shower?’ she sighed.

************************************************************************************

Willow watched Tara out of the corner of her eye as the blonde let her hands fall away from the laptop’s keyboard and fell back into the softness of the couch. The redhead saved her own typing, and then fell back into the couch too, turning her head to stare at Tara, who was rubbing her tired eyes.

“How’s it going?” Willow asked, discretely allowing Tara’s vanilla scent to fill up her own system while she waited for the blonde to finish the yawn she’d just started.

Tara slowly moved her hand away from her mouth, and Willow watched that adorable half-grin take over her features when she herself started to yawn. “Like yours, from the looks of it” the blonde grinned, when Willow wiped away the sleepy tears that had formed in her eyes after that yawn. Standing up, Tara raised her arms straight up in the air, lacing the fingers of both her hands together while stretching her sore back muscles. Willow watched mesmerized as Tara’s tee-shirt stretched against her bosom and rose high enough to gives her a glimpse of the blonde’s toned belly.

She quickly raised her eyes to Tara’s face when she a sigh, and was relieved to see that the blonde’s eyes had been closed while she stretched. When she opened them, Willow saw blue clouded with the hint of wetness mixed with an obvious urge to sleep, and Tara confirmed, “Ok, I need coffee, or I’m going to fall asleep in the middle of this thing. You want a cup?”

Willow nodded, and checked the time on her laptop as Tara walked away. They’d now been working on their assignments for almost two and a half hours, and Willow for one was pretty happy with the portion of her essay that she’d managed to knock off. Putting a bookmark into the reference text she’d been using, Willow rose and went to join Tara in the kitchen. “So, how were the kids yesterday?” she asked, leaning against the counter. The blonde didn’t look at her as she busied herself setting a plate on the opposite counter, “They were good. Mike’s really getting into his history class thanks to his fascination with the Cold War, and it’s really pretty sweet to see.” She emptied out some chocolate chip cookies onto the plate, and then turned to see that the coffee was done. Reaching over, Tara lifted the pot and filled up two coffee mugs that had been placed next to the cookie plate.

Willow realized that she wasn’t being as helpful as she possibly could, so pushing herself away from the counter she walked towards the jars and reached for the one labeled coffee. Tara moved away to give her space as she approached, and continued “Mel’s really starting to grasp geography too, so a large part of my time was spent trying to explain why North America and South America are separate continents.”

“Two?” Willow asked, holding out a spoon of sugar so that Tara knew what she was talking about. When the blonde nodded, she busied herself with sweetening their drinks, and asked, “Did you have an explanation for why the America’s are separate, and the other continents aren’t?”

“Not really” Tara grinned, watching Willow walk to the fridge and pull out the bottle of milk. Moments later, the two women walked to the dining table with their coffees and sat across one another with the plate of cookies in the middle. They sat in silence for a few moments, indulging in coffee and cookies, till Tara broke the hush, “How’s Ira?”

Willow swallowed her cookie and smiled, “Good. He actually gets home from, uh, Paris, this evening.” Tara nodded. “I spoke to him yesterday, and he was saying that he’d like to watch you play handball…so I was thinking that if it’s ok with you, I’ll bring him to watch you sometime next week?”

Tara smiled happily, “Yeah, no problem. I’ll just have to check with the new coach first. Some of them have a strict ‘No Friends or Family at Practice’ policy, because they think it can be a bit of a distraction. And since I have no idea who the new coach is going to be, I’ll just have to double check on Monday.”

This time it was Willow’s turn to nod, and as she did, the TV came on by itself, causing her to jump in fright. “Frikkin’ hell!” she gasped, holding her hand over her heart as its beating regularized again. Her expression caused Tara to burst into a fit of giggles, and when she was done she noticed that even though Willow hadn’t joined in, she was watching her with a sparkle in her green-eyes. Tara glanced at the TV, then looked back at Willow and said only one word, “Timer”.

Willow looked confused for a second, and before comprehending what Tara was saying. The still-amused looking blonde added, “There’s a documentary I want to watch on Animal Planet at 5:30, which is why I set the TV to come on by itself at 5:25. Honestly, I’m sorry if it scared you” she added, knowing that the redhead deserved an apology for the mini-fright.

“Tell it to the judge” Willow joked, and then added in a more serious tone, “I can leave if you want to watch…”

She was cut off by Tara even before she could complete the sentence, “Don’t be silly. You can stay and watch it with me…if you want that is?”

Willow bobbed her head up and down, blatantly failing her attempt to not look overly-enthusiastic. The two women smiled at each other before rising, cups and all, and shifting back to the couch. This time Tara set the plate between them on the couch, and rested her feet on the coffee table as she sat back. Willow mimicked her move, “So, what are we watching?”

“The world’s deadliest snakes”, Tara answered, reaching for a cookie.

“Oooo-kay…” A second later, “Do you like snakes?”

“Nope, not one bit. I’m actually petrified of them” Tara answered sincerely. She felt Willow’s confused gaze on her, and met green eyes with her own, “I am fascinated by them though…as long as they’re on TV. And the previews seem pretty interesting. Ooh, it’s starting!”

“You sure are weird Maclay” Willow joked, turning her attention back to the TV.

“Tell me something I don’t know” Tara smirked.

For the next 13 minutes Willow watched in silence as drama unfolded both onscreen and off it. On the other side of the magical glass she watched the documentary-maker traverse Asia in his quest of the continent’s most dangerous snake. But equally intriguing for Willow were the reactions of the girl seated right next to her, which the redhead was making sure to follow out of the corner of her eye. Tara’s cringing had started less than 2 minutes into the show, with the introduction of the Russell’s Viper snake. Willow noticed how the blonde would dig further into the back of the sofa every time a shot of the snake trying to attack the camera would pop up on screen, and couldn’t help but smile fondly at the small petrified sounds coming from the back of Tara’s throat. The blonde practically yelped and jumped in her seat when the filmmaker touched a 15 foot long Indian King Cobra on the back of its head, and when the filmmaker closed the segment with a shot of a Common Krait chewing on its prey, Willow turned to see Tara sitting still with a look of absolute disgust on her face.

The redhead smirked, “Looks like it isn’t just the French that enjoy frog legs, huh?”

“Ewww” Tara said, pulling a face and standing up. “Done?” she asked, and Willow nodded, handing over her empty coffee cup. Tara hooked it around the finger that was already holding on to her own cup, then picked up the empty plate of cookies and walked to the kitchen.

Willow took the opportunity to scoot in closer on the couch while the blonde was gone, and noticed that Tara also sat more towards the center when she returned. When the documentary resumed, this time in North America, there was a less than 15 inch gap separating the two women. The blonde watched wide-eyed as the image of an Eastern Diamondback appeared on screen. Both women exchanged a look when the narrator announced that the species of snake was almost selected as the National Animal of the U.S, but their attention was quickly drawn back to the screen which now bore a visual of a Western Diamondback. The narrator announced that both species were common in California, and Tara muttered “That’s it…I’m never leaving home again”

Willow giggled and received a glare from Tara which shut her up. By the time the second commercial break came around, Willow noticed that the gap between Tara and herself had become even smaller. “Why are you watching this?” Willow asked again, looking over at Tara.

“Because…” Tara shrugged.

“‘Because’?” Willow persisted. “That’s the best reason you could come up with? ‘Because’?”

“Yeah…” the blonde said slowly, “it’s good to know what’s out there, right?”

Willow narrowed her eyes, “Uh huh”, her tone clearly implying that she didn’t agree.

“Don’t you ‘uh huh’ me!” Tara said, poking Willow on the shoulder.

Willow giggled again “Oh yeah, now I’m scared”.

“As you should be” Tara retorted, and poked Willow again before looking back at the TV and scooting slightly closer to the redhead.

“Next the world’s deadliest snakes is heading to where it all began…Africa” the narrator was saying, as the third segment began. The documentary proceeded to show montages of the African safari, but ended on a Black Mamba. “Ooh, that’s the one from ‘Kill Bill’!” Willow said, excited.

Tara nodded her head but didn’t comment, and had just about digested visuals of the Mamba, a Boomslang, Yellow Cobra and Carpet Viper when the narrator announced, “…but thanks to Hollywood, no snake it more feared that this one”, and proceeded to show the viewer’s South America’s dreaded Anaconda. Willow felt a tug on her left arm, and realized that Tara had looped their arms together as she scooted as close to the redhead as she possibly could.

Though her eyes were still on the TV set before them, all of Willow’s attention was now on the warmth coming from the body pressed so close to hers. She wasn’t sure the blonde knew what she was doing, or whether she’d stay where she was if she knew the effect her innocent touch was having on Willow. The redhead tried to calm her own racing heart, and was just about succeeding in getting some kind of control over her senses when Tara yelped again and buried her face in Willow’s left shoulder. Green-eyes went wide, and she looked down to see the top of Tara’s head. Looking back at the TV screen, she realized what was causing Tara’s current reaction : The documentary featured a detailed account of a wild Anaconda swallowing a whole deer, and Willow was quite sure she’d be as creeped-out if she’d been concentrating as much as Tara. Looking back at the blonde, Willow finally moved, and wrapped her free-arm around Tara in a semi-hug that was meant to offer comfort. She heaved a silent sigh of relief when she felt Tara slightly relax into the embrace.

A few moments later, Willow heard a muffled sound from her shoulder “Is it gone yet?”

Willow looked up at the screen, and saw the deer’s feet disappearing, “Almost” she whispered, rubbing circles on Tara’s back to calm the blonde. Tara nodded her head slightly and stayed where she was, until a few seconds later Willow spoke, “Ok, gone.”

Tara pulled her head back from Willow’s shoulder, but didn’t look back at the TV immediately. Instead, she looked straight up at the redhead, “Really?” Willow smiled at her semi-scared, semi-suspicious tone, but nodded reassuringly, “Really.”

Tara seemed to study her a moment, and then turned her head to the TV, which was now playing commercials again. Willow gently pulled back the hand that was wrapped around Tara, and expected her to sit up again, but instead, Tara stayed where she was, and rested her head on Willow’s left shoulder. She also didn’t release Willow’s arm that she had been clutching onto for dear life, and in that moment the redhead understood for the very first time what it must feel like to be truly content. Neither girl said anything until the documentary resumed on location in Australia, and even then it was only to marvel at how pretty the Tiger Snake was, or vow to never go near a Taipan.

They continued to sit that way even when the end credits started rolling, and Willow was thinking about how the snake was her new favourite animal when Tara broke the silence, “Well, I’m definitely awake now.”

Willow laughed softly, “Doofus”. She sensed more than felt Tara laugh, and after sitting that way for a few more moments, Tara finally lifted her head and rested it on the back of the couch as she looked at Willow. “Do you have plans for the evening?”

The redhead knew that she probably looked as dejected as she felt when she said, “Yes actually. Dad should be home in about an hour, and I told him I’d do dinner with him…” Tara’s expression stayed neutral as she nodded, but Willow quickly added, “Do you wanna join us?!”

Tara seemed to consider it a second, then regrettably shook her head, “I’d love to, but I do have an assignment I need to finish tonight. And hey, you should get some alone time with Ira this evening.”

Willow was going to protest, but stopped when she saw the sense in Tara’s words. After all, her Dad might be tired after the trans-Atlantic flight. Taking a deep breath, she exhaled through her nostrils as she nodded. Tara smiled up at her, then disentangled their still linked arms and stood up. Willow missed the contact immediately, but simply asked “You going to be at practice tomorrow?, as she sat forward and shut down her laptop.

Tara had just turned the TV off, “Yeah, but not for long. I have to be at work for this big meeting at 1:30, so I’ll be leaving early. And I think it’s going to be a long, long day. I might even have to tell the kids to let themselves in with the spare…”

The redhead cut her off, “Hey, I could teach them?” She watched Tara while packing her laptop and books away.

“You sure?” Tara asked, not wanting to inconvenience Willow.

“Of course. When will you be back?”

“I’m not sure really…the kids’ll be here at 5, but we have a potential-client coming in for a sponsor meeting, and that usually means we’ll more probably than not head out for drinks and dinner that I unofficially have to be at.”

“That’s alright, I’ll just be here at 5 to work with the kids. Ok?”

Tara smiled gratefully, and held up her index finger. “Two ticks” She walked into her bedroom, and when she came out, walked straight up to Willow and held out the spare key.

Willow grinned, “You sure it isn’t too soon?” She knew she was flirting, but didn’t want to stop herself.

Tara laughed right back, and quirked her eyebrow at the redhead, “I’m sure”. Willow thought she heard a serious undertone in her voice, but chose to let this precious moment be as it was for now. Pocketing the key, she slung her backpack over her shoulders and then leaned in to hug Tara. “I had a good day today” she smiled, still holding on to the blonde.

She felt Tara wrap her arms a little tighter around her slight frame and say in a half-whisper, “Me too.” They pulled apart with matching grins, “Thanks Will.”

“Anything for a pretty lady” Willow replied, and with mock-bow she smiled one more time at a grinning Tara, and let herself out of the apartment. The redhead could feel Tara’s eyes following her as she turned to walk down the stairs, and couldn’t help but feel like she’d made some definite progress.
