I made it to Thursday, MKF!
I missed a few days of work this week due to some kind of horrible plague, the feverish hurts-to-swallow kind (my feet are both OK, though, thank God). My folks are coming this weekend and I can't afford to be sick while they're here. Literally. My mother had a liver transplant about a year ago, everything went well & she's doing great, but the anti-rejection medicine takes a toll on her immune system. She's not supposed to be around anyone sick, particularly not if it's communicable.
So ... I'm at the doctor's office for the first time in AGES. I loathe doctors and hospitals, but I had to get this sickness knocked out (or at least under control) before my folks show up. I told the doctor about my Mom's condition and he said it would be no problem. Gave me a megadose shot of antibiotics and - just to be on the safe side - a steroid shot. I don't recall which one it was, but one of them hurt like a MOTHERFUCKER!!! I do not use that word lightly, either. Burned like a hot needle going in (as opposed to a cold needle, I suppose ...), and for about two hours afterwards it felt like someone had busted me in the arm with a baseball bat. I kept looking at my arm expecting to see a hideous bruise, but there was nothing.
So why go to all that trouble? Why not ask the folks to come down next week? This kind of ties in with the Thursday Vacation Game we've got going. I'm a little embarassed I haven't talked about this earlier, MKF, but ... next week Mrs. Gorn and I are going to Japan. Mrs. Gorn is going over on business for four months. Yes, that's 4 months ... actually works about to be closer to three & a half, though. The company knows this is a hell of an imposition, but we agreed to it because it was a great career opportunity for her. And they were throwing a veritable mountain of money at her. Also part of the deal, they're paying for us both to go over early so we can take a vacation together before the long absence.
Well, once word got out I was going to be in Japan for a week on vacation, people started coming around my desk ... "While you're there, can you take care of fill-in-the-blank? Can you check on this-that-and-the-other? Can you meet with Mr. So-and-so?" Finally, the plant manager came to me and said, why not tack on an extra 10 days and make it a working vacation?
Hooray for me.
To be fair, we're going to do a bunch of vacationy things. We're going to stay with her folks for a few days. There will probably be numerous parties of heavy drinking and heavier karaoke. We'll go to Tokyo Disneyland, probably spend a couple of days at a hot springs resort in the mountains. And those last few days before I go back to the States, I foresee a lot of hot, desperate nookie.
While we're gone, my folks are coming down to house-sit for us, look after all our critters. Which is why I need to shake this disease afflicting me in a big hurry, because it's already Thursday, MKF!
Although I'm very much looking forward to being in Japan again, both Mrs. Gorn and I are little apprehensive about it. We've never been apart that long since the very first night we met. Oh, I suppose it might be OK in the beginning - I'll have all my buddies over, drink a lot of beer, order pizza everynight, have unfettered access to World of Warcraft for hours upon hours at a time every weekend ... But all that will probably get old after two or three months.
No, I'm kidding. I expect it to be hell right from Day 1, MKF. I expect I'll come moping around the Kittenboard a lot more often, looking for a little solace and pity. Mrs. Gorn says the time will pass quickly, but I don't think so. I don't think it could pass quickly enough if I blinked my eyes and it was over. It's going to be a long, long, long
long
long
three & a half months, MKF.
EDIT - Outfits, ktv? What a great idea! In addition to your vacation (Japan for me), your local staycation (forgot to answer - the various historic bourbon distilleries just north of me in central Kentucky) ... what's your favourite outfit to see your partner in?
I spent most of my money on liquor and women,
The rest I wasted.
