Holy static cling Batman... my whole shirt seems to be sticking to the back of the couch.

Well, it's Thursday. And I'm sitting here staring at our Xmas tree. Which is a little weird for me as I haven't had a tree in forever - maybe 10 or 12 years. But we tromped out to my field yesterday and sawed down one of the many invasive little cedar trees, hauled it home and rummaged around 'til we found ornaments. Sweet, really. Made me wish we had ornaments we had purchased/made together. Maybe next year.

We also found lights that must be older than I am. We put them up in the living room (not on the highly combustible tree), but can only turn them on briefly before we worry that they will start a fire. How on earth did more houses not burn down when folks used these?

So that is my Thursday. I wish I could offer up a Boschi-bucks offer, but nothing tickles my fancy today. ktv, forgive me.

Best wishes to everyone,

Boschi

P.S. Wait a moment! What's this from the eating/drinking thread?!

From a post by Leaf:

boschi my dear, cockle research just for you:
"Cockle is the common name for bivalve mollusks of the family Cardiidae. The now relatively uncommon English phrase 'it warms the cockles of my heart', is used to signify delight. A number of differing derivations of this phrase have been proposed, either directly from the perceived heart-shape of a cockleshell, or indirectly (the zoological name for one cockle genus being Cardium, from the Greek for heart), or from the Latin diminutive of the word heart, corculum. Another proposed derivation is from the Latin for the ventricles of the

Ah, a researcher. I love research. Though to be picky, you really should have cited your source(s). On the other hand, you did refer to me as "my dear", which balances that out. So I send my thanks and five more boschi bucks to Leaf.

See, MKF? She only offers boschi-bucks up on a whim.

A Merry Thursday to all Kittens out there, particularly Boschi and her first-christmas-tree-in-a-long-time. My family went out and cut down our own tree once when I was a kid living in Alaska, and it is one of my fondest memories. No matter where I was or what I was doing, I always put up a tree. My first Christmas in Japan, when I barely knew a soul and still couldn't really speak the language, I drove into Sapporo, bought a 12" plastic tree (that's inches, not feet), and put it up on a chair so it wouldn't get lost in the presents my family had sent me. Kinda lonely, but I had a tree, some presents, and the first white Christmas I'd seen for a number of years (and haven't seen once since leaving Hokkaido, to be honest).

This is, by the way, the last Thursday before Christmas!

Dear god this is the groggiest Thursday I have had in ages. It hurts a little just to be awake. Unfortunately the grog is due to excess of work rather than excess of fun. Maybe I'll try for the latter next Thursday. It's good to have goals, right?

Boschi wrote:Though to be picky, you really should have cited your source(s).
Oh, I know I know (hangs head in shame). It was quicky cheating entertainment style research. By which I mean wikipedia. I'm embarrassed to admit it. Thank you for your gracious bestowing of bucks despite my questionable methodology. If it improves my credibility, I have in fact on semi-frequent occasion used the phrase "warms my cockles." Mrs. Leaf recently told me that she thought I had made it up. And then when I huffed indignantly in the defense of warmed cockles she told me it sounded dirty. Sheesh.

So I am following my typical Thursday routine today - a morning full of laundry before hauling myself off to work around noon. I treated myself to a cup of coffee from my favorite neighborhood joint that makes it sooooooo very well, so the day is feeling special anyhow. In this age of big gulps I have a special respect for an establishment who's "small coffee" is in fact small.

I am all in favor of christmas trees too. I love the smell. I love our eclectic (that's the um, polite way to refer to it...) assemblage of ornaments. In my excessively religious childhood, it always made me happy to have such a blatantly pagan holdover take center stage in the living room. Mrs. Leaf loves christmas trees possibly more than she loves me. She has special rules about how they have to be taller than her. When we moved to New York it was our first time in 7 years living in a non-attic apartment with ceilings that scraped your head. That year she had us bring home this 8 1/2 foot monster that took up a third of the living room. It looked hysterical, but it made her so happy. Having learned that one of the secrets of wedded bliss is choosing your battles, I zipped my lip and just enjoyed her giddy-fest. This year our tree is a much more reasonable size. It's still quite pretty.

Allrighty, time to fetch the clothes out of the dryer. Enjoy your Thursday folks!

Happy Thursday to all and to all a goodnight. Indeed it is the last Thursday before Christmas. I'm getting that exciting Christmas feeling. The kids at school are super excited for tomorrow, they will be on break. So a classful of screaming, excited, sugar filled kids; was about as an exciting Thursday as it could get. Actually it lasted forever just like my week has. I think I'm anticipating the break way too much. 11 days of no screaming kids, now thats exciting. Now I will go fill my belly up with some margaritas and yummy mexican entrees. Now thats a what I call a bitchin Thursday.

Mrs. Gorn has the day off tomorrow (yours truly is slaving away yet one more day). She just took off to buy beer, tearing out of the parking lot like Rosco P. Coltrane was right on her tail. We live in a dry county, so she's got to make a run for the county-line to buy alcohol - you Southern Kittens out there will know what I'm talking about.

I find that Mrs. Gorn having Friday off makes for an even better Thursday.

happy thursday. i'm getting over the flu so i spend a nice day lounging about in bed and being taken care of by my mom. i was particularly exhausted because a friend and i left so cal tuesday night and driven straight through to portland (1000 miles) trying to beat a storm that was going to unload snow on the mountains we had to go through. so it was lovely being back "home," resting up, and hanging with my super cute niece.

if only the magic of thursday could have done all of my christmas shopping for me. i haven't even started. oops.

okay... time for more nyquil. peace out, kittens.

Happy Holiday Thursday, MKF!! What with Christmas and the whole week off, I almost forgot today was Thursday! Almost.

We've got a dinner to go to tonight, and we're leaving tomorrow to visit family in Minnesota; won't be back until after the first part of January. I won't be around to ring in the New Year here on the Kittenboard, so I'd like to wish all of you a great night on the 31st and the best of years in 2008!

Though I'd lurked for a while, I didn't really become an active member until January of this year. Since that time I've made a number of friends here, read a lot of great stories, and discovered the wonder of Thursday. I expected very little, but the Kittenboard took me in and gave me a place to open up a part of me that usually stays closed. Here at the end of this year and the beginning of the next, I find myself looking back on the time I spent here in 2007 and I'm grateful.

Happy Thursday, MKF!

Oh, it was most definitely Thursday. I know this on account of going back to work. Small grumble. Just a small one though. It was a good day even if it was busy. Good hard work.

I had a nice Christmas with the in-laws. The wifey is still putting in some family time out in the wilds of Connecticut, so I am a solo Leaf for the rest of week. I get to see both of my brothers on New Years day and I am looking forward to that. They are good boys.

Hope everybody whooped it up on the last Thursday of 2007.

Happy New Year gorn. Enjoy the cold in Minnasota. Build yourself a snow-kitten.

Welcome to the first Thursday of 2008.

I'm back to work in freezing cold with an uncomfortable extra 12 pounds of holiday meals stuffed in my suddenly tight jeans.

Whoopee.

On the other hand, the vacation was pretty spiffy - including a trip out to Lucas, Kansas, the home of The Garden of Eden and the Grassroots Art Center. I wasn't expecting to like it that much honestly, but I ended up having a really good time. Check out the website of The Garden of Eden at:

http://www.garden-of-eden-lucas-kansas.com/index.html

It's a trippy place - a Civil War vet with a lot of spare time, plenty of imagination and political opinions, and many tons of concrete built a ... whatever this is. It's pretty wild. Plus, he had himself mummified and put on display in the mausoleum he built out back. There was an airleak a few years back however, so he's gotten a little moldy (ewww).

On a side note, before the place was purchased by the Grassroots Art Center it had been turned into apartments for a time. Living there would've been pretty trippy - 30 foot concrete sculptures everywhere and a mummy in the backyard....

I'd post a link to the Arts Center, but the website is down at the moment. Besides, you really have to be there to appreciate the full size motorcycle made entirely of soda can pull tabs. :smug

However, it's always good to know about weird stuff, so I offer boschi bucks (on a sliding scale calculable only in my own diseased brain) to any Kittens who share descriptions, links or images of "grassroots"/weird-and-cool/everyday folk kinda of art/creations.

Despite my sig, points will be lost for pretension in this case. :smash

Happy Thursday every.

Postby Leaf » Thu Jan 03, 2008 9:51 pm

First Thursday of the new year, huh? I almost feel like I missed it on account of too much work and too little viewing of daylight. I have an old friend in town this week, and I hear that she and Mrs. Leaf had a lovely day today, but I missed out on it. Just a modicum of self pity there. Sniffle.

So here's my story of the day - dignity optional. I work at a spa and we have these very benign uniform T shirts that we have to wear. I had a new deodorant experiment going on today (in hindsight not the best timing) and it was not going well. My work involves a fair amount of perspiration and in short, I stank. So I'm feeling a little self conscious about the stinky factor and I decided to get a little creative about it. I said to myself - hey, I know what I'll do, I'll just drip a little lemongrass oil (because this is a spa and we have shit like that floating around) on my shirt and then I will just smell zesty and refreshing and no one will notice the stinkies lurking beneath. Drip drip, sniff, sniff, and bingo! I thought this was going great until I popped into the bathroom after seeing a client and to my horror the tiny little lemongrass oil drops have turned bright flaming yellow. Very discreet on my pale blue shirt. Oh yes. Master of subtlety am I. Good stuff.

My favorite wierd and cool grassroots art creation ever was a 6 foot tall butter sculpture of American Gothic that I saw once at the Iowa State Fair when I was a kid. It was fan-freaking-tastic. I loved it. It didn't win the butter sculpture contest though. The life sized cow did. American Gothic was way better.

All right MKF, my bright yellow stinky pits and I are going to hit the shower. And if we're lucky we'll make it to bed before it's Friday.

Be good!

Wow, I almost missed Thursday, MKF! First day back at work had me swamped, took the dog to the vet, and left work early to get the car worked on (the trip to Minnesota turned out to be pretty rough). The good news - Mrs. Gorn made curry tonight! She used the Really Big Pot, too, so it's probably going to last me through the weekend. God, I hope so! Curry is one of those foods that gets better the longer you let it sit, you know? Saturday or Sunday ought to be a truly righteous dining experience.

I love Mrs. Gorn.

I do so want me some more boschi-bucks, but I can't think of anything suitable to write about just now. It's just too late in the day and I'm too tired.

Well, ok, how about this ...
I once visited a shrine in Japan that had the mummy of a Zen Buddhist monk who - how do I say this? - self-mummified himself before dying. He ate this weird diet of tree sap and poisonous water (an arsenic-laced spring, or something like that) over a long period of time, gradually wasting away while meditating. It somehow killed the bacteria in his stomach, and just before he died he had himself burined in a frozen cave. When his followers finally opened the cave, Voila! he was mummified! I don't recall how long ago this was, but his mummy is still sitting there in the shrine where they put him. He looks pretty nasty, but it's supposedly inspiring if you're a member of that sect.

A related story - this was the inspiration of a weird cult in Japan a few years back called Life Space. Their leader tried to mummify himself, but didn't do quite so good a job. He was in an apartment near the Tokyo Airport and he started to stink. It was a pretty big story over there because it happened kind of around the same time as the Aum Shinrikyo cult was on the run after gassing the subways. The guy's followers tried to claim religious persecution (and that the mummy was still actually alive), but the Japanese weren't quite so open to that argument anymore after their experience with Aum.

Hmm, it seems I had more to write about than I thought. This is a really weird post; I had half a mind to delete it, but what the hell? It's Thursday!

Hmmm... last Thursday was an odd one, wasn't it?

I owe Mr. "I love curry from The Really Big Pot" and Ms. "bright yellow stinky pits" a few boschi bucks. And so I dutifully distribute them. I occurs to me that if I send out too many of these that I could have a helluva Thursday if everyone decided to redeem theirs for a toast.

No big news from me, I'm just spending the day tidying the house and getting ready to go to the Great Plains Vegetable Growers Conference.

Yeah, I know. Kinda funny. It's a lot of pairs of overalls under one roof.

Happy Thursday Kittens.

Look out for tornadoes, MKF!! I just spent the last twenty minutes or so in our plant's official tornado shelter - the restroom. They say one touched down somewhere around here, but everything appears to be safe & sound now. Back to work (which really means back to browsing the Kittenboard).

A wild Thursday, huh?

Yeah, last Thursday was kind of strange, too. I don't know what was up with all that talk of mummies ... The Curry in the Really Big Pot turned out damn good, though - as usual - and I'm trying to get Mrs. Gorn to whip up another Pot for the weekend.

So, how many boschi-bucks did I get? $20,000? If you're busy, I'll wait to cash in on the Broadway Musical until next week.

Great Plains Vegetable Growers Conference? I'm imagining Hee-Haw, though with more produce and less Daisy-dukes ... but just as much zany comedy!

20,000? Are you kidding me? I haven't been working nearly enough on my chorus line high kicks to get anywhere near the musical yet!

Hmmm... how about 10 a piece?

And remember, if a tornado comes through, look for Helen Hunt. You should be safe with a main character. Also, she's hot.

Ah my Thursday buds, I need some help. I am not feeling the Thursday joy. I have had myself one big poop of a night complete with a long day on the job, some spontaneous escalating lower back pain, and the forgetting of my house keys at work. My charming Brooklyn street is somewhat less charming at 11:00 at night when you are stuck outside in the rain waiting for your wife or your neighbors to get home and let you in. Blah blah blah whine whine whine. Harrumph.

But on the brighter side gorn ate some good curry and Boschi is off to the Regional Overall Expo. That's good stuff. And I scored some more bucks. I think I might be up to 20 now...maybe gorn and I can pool our chips for the musical...hmmmm.

And where the heck is ktv? Got better things to do with her Thursdays now, does she? :miff

Ok then. Next week I will be in the proper spirit, by gum.
Happy Thursday, MKF

i'm here! i'm here! i have been so derelict in my thursday celebrating duties. i hope you all will forgive me. i wish i had tales of crazy fair art to share, but i can't think of a single example of anything wacky i've seen. i've resigned myself to the fact that i will never get boschi bucks.

i was on a date after work last thursday (it was date two of four thus far with one girl in particular, including tonight's outing) and didn't get home till well after midnight, so thursday was long gone. so i hope that's an excused absence. as for yesterday, well, i just plain forgot it was thursday. my job ended on monday and it didn't take long for me to forget what the date was all week. good times. this is not to say that i was wholly unproductive on thursday.... in fact, i used the time to send out resumes, teach my tiny niece very bad behaviors, and beat "guitar hero III" on the easy level.

anyway, hope you all can find it in your thursday lovin-hearts to forgive. as god is my witness, i will never miss thursday again!

I remember very clearly an overwhelming sense of motivation, focus and enthusiasm. Last night, right before I drifted off, I made a mental to do list that felt very complete and interesting. I was excited about the idea of getting up this morning and getting started.

That was then. This is now.

My teeth are still unbrushed, my mind is muddled and I have no earthly idea what I was thinking last night.

Ah-well. It's Thursday. It will come back to me if it was important.

I thought I'd share my favorite time-wasting website of late:

http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/index.html

It's Murray McMurray hatchery, and they have hundreds of varieties of chickens, ducks, peacocks, geese, pheasants, etc.
Check out the "day old baby chickens" link (to the left) and peruse the Crested Breeds and Rare and Unusual breeds. Them thar are some trippy lookin' chickens.

Stay full of Thursday goodness,

Boschi, brush your teeth! It's Thursday, for crying out loud!

Nice website, though! I once ran over a peacock out in Cheyenne on one of those country backroads north of town (I was going to the university in Laramie, but my folks lived over the mountains in Cheyenne). You'd think I would've seen a brilliant blue bird like that, particularly when everything around was a dry, dusty brown ... but I was young, stupid, driving too fast, and playing with the radio. I looked up just in time to see that quick flash of the brightest blue, then THWUMP!! it went right under my car. I drove back to see what it was, and sure enough it was a peacock. Wasn't a house or farm around for miles, no idea what it was doing out there. This is going to sound kind of sick, but the bright blue feathers and red blood splattered all over the road was hauntingly beautiful, particular out in that dead brown countryside.

I haven't thought about that for years now.

Mrs. Gorn keeps talking about raising chickens, so I'm not going to show her this website. Neither one of us know the first thing about raising critters (other than dogs or cats), and I'm afraid it's going to end up being an awful lot of work. I bet they're noisy as hell in the morning, too.

What's that, MKF? Half an hour till lunch? Wow, this day is going by pretty fast! I love Thursdays.

Calling all kittens this is to alert you that we have a three day weekend hopefully that goes for most.

MLK, MKF? Hence the 3 day for some in the U.S.
Don't confuse me with your reasonableness.

That's right! My company only observes one holiday every other month (except for Thanksgiving in November & Christmas in December), and we've already had our day off (New Year's Day) this month. Next work holiday for me is Good Friday in March. Shame on me, MKF, MLK's Birthday wasn't even on my radar ...

Ya know, I still haven't brushed my teeth. (Hey Gorn, it's Thursday for cryin' out loud - get off my back...)

WOAH....Nellie, I totally forgot today was Thursday. I guess the week went faster than I thought. I just now got to sit down all day well without kids surrounded by me or falling block castles, those can be dangerous both kids and blocks. I came home and had a headache but I decided to work out and what do you know....no headache. I also did some major cleaning. I wouldn't have cleaned if I knew today was Thursday...I have to be breaking some kind of law there. I really really want a beer but I'll stick with my ice water since I have limited the alcohol intake. Well Cheers everyone....mmmmmm tasty water. :paranoid
