[center]Chapter Four: With Friends Like These, Who Needs Enemies?[/center]

Willow sat across from the girl, watching with curiosity as she took a sip from the cup she held in her hands, and was utterly surprised at the complete lack of hostile action on her part to what was going on around her. That alone told Willow that there was certainly something weird about her, but at the same time, there was also something about her that told the redhead that she wasn’t someone that needed to be treated like an enemy.

Naturally, the others had taken the exact opposite viewpoint, so after helping Cordelia, who had collapsed upon seeing the girl, to the couch, Buffy and Anya started to pace behind her; a pair of vultures circling a prey that would eventually show a weakness they would be all too happy to exploit.

“Who are you?” Anya asked.

“Why have you been following us around?” Buffy added.

“Willow told us that Fred’s going to turn back to normal soon. How could you know that?”

“How did you get in here?”

“And where were you on the night of December 22nd?”

Buffy shot Anya a dirty look. “Sorry,” she sheepishly replied. “I guess I got caught up in the moment.”

“It’s OK,” Buffy replied, before casting her gaze down towards the girl and gesturing with her free hand. “But right now, I think we have more important things to take care of, like figuring out what we’re going to do with her.”

“Why?” Willow asked.

Anya looked at Willow. “What?”

Willow paused, unsure not only how to respond to that query, but why she had said the comment that had prompted it. “I mean, why do we have to do anything about her? Yeah, she broke in here, but all she did was eat us out of house and home. It’s horrible, I understand, but it’s not exactly something that warrants us treating her no better than we treated Tara before we found out about her.”

“Are you suggesting that we treat her as a friend just because you have a feeling about her?” Buffy asked. Willow nodded.

“I do.”

“Well, I don’t agree,” Anya retorted. “This isn’t your girlfriend we’re talking about here, Willow. Even though she was helping us all this time, she still could have told us that she was doing it. And I still don’t think it’s a good idea for her to be involved in all this…”

“Anya.”

Anya sighed at Buffy’s interruption. “In any case, this girl isn’t like Tara. Tara helped us; we don't know what her story is.”

“Well, you should,” the girl said suddenly, getting up and making her way towards the couch where Cordelia lay. Surprisingly, despite their earlier actions, neither Anya nor Buffy made any immediate move to stop her. By the time it occurred to them to do so, the girl was already sitting down beside Cordelia’s prone form, looking at each of them in turn. “I’ve always been here.”

“You have?” Cordelia asked weakly, working herself up from her prone position.

“Of course,” the girl replied simply as if it were not the big surprise it obviously was to the others. “I’ve been here from the start of this entire adventure, and I’ve helped you get this far. And if you want to get even further, you’re just going to have to listen to me and do everything I tell you to do.”

“No offense,” Willow said to cover the silence that followed the girl’s declaration. “But I don’t think we’ll feel comfortable taking orders from a fourteen year old girl.”

The girl’s face broke out into one of amusement. “Then it might interest you to know that this so called ‘fourteen year old girl’ is actually…”

The sound of a ringing phone cut the girl off and Willow, noticing the look of annoyance on her face, reached into her pocket to fish it out. “Hello?”

”Hello, Willow.”

“Fred?”

The others, including the girl, took an immediate interest in the conversation at the sound of Willow’s voice saying Fred’s name. Noticing this, but not acting on it, Willow continued, “What…what is it that you want?”

”To fight you.”

“I…I…don’t want to hurt you, Fred.”

”You already have, Willow. Or have you forgotten how your abandoning me led to me becoming a part of the enemy camp in the first place?”

Willow stiffened. “All right, then. If that’s the way that you want it, Fred…”

”Good. Be at the rec center in fifteen minutes. And come alone. The others don’t need to be a part of this.”

“Why not?”

”Because if they come, they’ll end up being hurt. And you wouldn’t want any more of your so called friends hurt because you acted rashly, would you?”

The line went dead before Willow could respond, and she closed the phone and replaced it in her pocket. Looking up, she saw the others, especially the strange girl, looking at her curiously.

“That…was Fred.”

Anya scoffed. “We know that. What did she want?”

Willow swallowed. “She wants us to go…to go to the cemetery; she wants to face us all by herself.”

“It’s gotta be a trap,” Cordelia pointed out.

“Obviously,” Anya replied, her comment all but suggesting the rolling of her eyes, even if she didn’t actually do so.

“That’s why Willow’s going to stay here while we go deal with Fred,” Buffy replied.

“But…”

“No ‘buts’, Will,” Buffy insisted, raising her hand to cut off Willow’s retort. “You might be the Princess, and that means you can tell us what to do, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to let you do so if it ends up putting yourself into danger that you can easily avoid.”

“Besides,” Anya added, gesturing to the girl. “If what she said is right, and I’m not believing for a moment that it is, she’ll snap out of whatever spell the enemy put on her soon. If it happens before we get there, we’ll just bring her back here and everything will be alright.”

“After we clean up the mess,” Cordelia muttered.

“All right,” Willow sighed, slumping against her chair.

“And besides,” Anya said, tilting her head to the girl as Buffy and Cordelia made their way to the door. “Someone needs to stay here and keep an eye on her.”

Willow turned and watched as Anya joined the others at the doorway, the three of them stepping through a few moments later. She let out a pained sigh. She couldn’t believe that she had just lied to them, but it was the only way to make sure that they didn’t get in her way. Fred had been right; no matter what they or anyone else thought, she had been responsible for what had happened to her, for everything that had gone wrong, both here in the present and in the past life. And no matter what, she had to make things right the best she could, even when the outlook to such a scenario was bleak.

Willow turned around to get up to leave, wondering what she was going to do with the girl, only to discover that she was no longer in the room. For a moment, she grew concerned as to how she had gotten out of the room, the only way to do so having been under her observation for at least the past minute. Shaking her head, she decided that this was a mystery best left to be solved later, gathered her things, and made her way out the door.

Moments after she left, the girl stood up from her hiding place from behind the couch, a contemplative look on her face.

Fred smiled thinly as she put her cell phone back in her pocket. The first part of her plan had been completed. Having just told Willow where she would be waiting for her, she had no doubt that the redhead would lie to her friends as to what that location was, if for no other reason than to make sure that they were out of the way while she made her way to the rec center to face her, all in a futile effort to bring back that which had been taken away from her and could never be recovered. All that remained for her to do now was to ensure that, once her deception became know to the others, her friends had no opportunity to interfere.

Moving to a nearby pay phone, she dropped a quarter into the slot and punched in a number, shaking off yet another headache as she did so. The phone ran for a few moments before someone on the other line picked up.

”Sunnydale Police Station?”

Fred’s smile widened as she began to speak, knowing that there were only a few out of the way places Willow would send the others. “Hello, I’d like to report an incident at the cemetery…”

It took Buffy, Cordelia and Anya ten minutes to reach the park from the Bronze, and once arriving there, the three managed to find a secluded area in which to transform into their Soldier forms. Getting up, they looked around trying to find something out of the ordinary.

Seeing nothing, Buffy turned to Anya. “So what do we do now?”

“Wait until Fred shows up, I guess,” Anya replied.

“And if she doesn’t?”

Anya bit her lower lip. “Then we deal with that when it happens.”

“Let’s hope we don’t have to…” Cordelia began, only to stop as a sudden wave of pain engulfed her mind. Falling to her knees, she reached a hand tentatively to her head in an effort to shake it off.

Noticing her discomfort, Buffy quickly knelt down beside her. “You OK?”

“Yeah,” Cordelia replied. “It’s just that…oh, no!”

“What?” Anya asked, her unease and concern about the situation growing with each passing moment.

“We’ve gotta get out of here!” Cordelia shouted, getting to her feet and immediately collapsing back to the ground. “Help me up!”

Buffy and Anya moved quickly to help Cordelia to her feet, and then made their way as fast as they could towards the gate where they had entered the cemetery. They were a quarter of the way there when they heard what had obviously prompted Cordelia to say what she had said.

“The police,” Buffy deadpanned. “We were set up.”

“No kidding,” Anya scoffed. “What I wanna know is…by who?”

Buffy shot Anya a look. “What the hell are you talking about?”

Anya glared back at Buffy, her expression deadly serious. “You know what I’m talking about. Willow told us that Fred said she wanted to meet her here. How do we know Willow wasn’t going behind our backs just to get us out of the way?”

Buffy let out an exasperated sigh. “Will you please get off that kick? I had really thought that everything we went through would have softened your attitude towards her. What crawled up your backside and set up shop this time?”

Anya let out an equally annoyed sigh. “I don’t have to explain myself to you. If you can’t trust that I’ve got everyone’s best interests at heart, that’s your own fault.”

Buffy was about to respond when Cordelia interrupted. “Look, guys, I’m all for arguing who got us into this situation, but I really think we should probably save it for some time when we don’t have the cops bearing down on us!”

“She’s right,” Buffy replied, shifting her weight as she hefted Cordelia up. “We don’t have time to do this now.”

“I think we’re going to have all the time we need,” Anya grunted. “Like about twenty to life.” Buffy brought her head around to find three police cars parked in front of the gate, their occupants quickly moving out of them and, withdrawing their holstered side arms, making their way towards them.

“Sunnydale Police! Stay where you are and put your hands on your head!”

Willow walked into the rec center with the slightest hint of trepidation in her, still unsure as to what to expect, and even more afraid of the fact that she was going up against her former friend all by herself. Even despite Fred’s demand, she should have told her friends to come and wait in the wings. Frogs, she even should have told Tara. If there was anyone in the world she felt comfortable doing this sort of thing with, it would have been her.

But here she was, all by herself, knowingly walking into the proverbial spider’s nest, without backup or any real idea as to how to deal with the situation. It was a scene straight out of every horror movie she ever saw. All that was missing was the creepy music.

“Hello, Willow.”

Willow snapped her head around to find Fred standing at the top of the bleachers in a crouched position, a smile on her face. “I’m glad to see that you’ve come alone.”

“I…I didn’t want my friends to be hurt,” Willow stammered, cursing her weakness for faltering in a situation that clearly required more steady nerves than she had.

“A smart idea, Willow,” Fred chuckled. “And a foolish one.”

Willow immediately caught the edge in Fred’s voice. “What did you do?”

Fred shook her head innocently. “Don’t spaz out, Willow. I didn’t do anything to harm them. I’ve just made sure that they wouldn’t be able to bother us while…”

Willow watched as Fred raised one hand to her head and winced. Hoping that this was a confirmation of what she had been told by that strange girl, that the spell on Fred was weakening, she let some of the tension she felt ease out of there, hoping that the confrontation she had been dreading could be easily avoided.

All her hopes were dashed as Fred stood up, shaking her head and setting her expression into one of cool anger. “While we deal with our unfinished business.” Setting herself up in a combat stance, Fred crossed her arms, Willow seeing her transformation bracelet strapped to her arm.

“Dark Power Make Up!”

“You’re under arrest for disturbing the peace. Anything you say or do can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one shall be provided to you…”

Bent over the hood of one of the cop cars, hands cuffed behind her back, all Buffy could do was listen as the cop holding her down prattled off the usual spiel she heard cops in the movies say to the bad guys they captured. Only there was one small problem: the guys in this situation were neither guys, nor bad. They were, though the cops had no idea, the only ones who could save their sorry miserable lives, and the irony that, by doing this, they were preventing that which they themselves were sworn to do was not lost on her.

Anya was trying very hard to explain that situation to another of the officers. “You’ve got it all wrong. We’re not the bad guys here.”

“It didn’t look that way back in December,” the cop replied as he moved over behind her, taking her wrists and securing them in the handcuffs he held.

“Leave it to the police to see what they want to see,” Anya muttered. “Anything to get back to your coffee and doughnuts that much sooner.”

“That’s enough out of you,” the cop said, smacking Anya over the back of the head and guiding her towards the back of one of the cars, Cordelia already having been placed in the back seat. Buffy, meanwhile, tried to free herself from the grip of the guard pinning her down, only to get slammed against the hood again for her trouble.

Just then, the dispatcher’s radio affixed to his belt came to life. ”All units, all units. Incident at Sunnydale Rec Center. All units report with all haste…”

”Fred!” Buffy thought a moment before she heard a yelp from the guard pinning her down, followed by the release of his body against her own. Getting up quickly, she saw a white furred cat on the guard’s body, its claws buried deep into the man’s back.

“Artemis!?”

“Quickly!” he shouted. “Get the others. I’ll keep these guys distracted.” Buffy nodded and made her way to the car where the others had been placed, the pair having already chosen to use Artemis’ distraction to their benefit, making their way out of the car and knocking the cops who had remained nearby with clumsily, yet well executed, blows to their more tender regions.

Buffy moved quickly to remove the keys from the belt of one of the downed officers, and worked as best she could to free Anya’s wrists. Managing to do so, Anya took the keys from Buffy’s hand and freed both her and Cordelia from their entrapment. Running out of the cemetery, they rounded the corner and, after taking a quick look to see if anyone was watching, transformed back to their normal forms.

“That was close,” Cordelia breathed.

“Yeah,” Anya replied, her voice tinged with anger. “Willow’s got some explaining to do.”

Retorts from Buffy and Cordelia were stalled by Artemis’ arrival. “We better get out of here before the cops have a chance to recover and search the area. You won’t be recognized in your civilian forms, but its best not to give them any ideas.”

The girls nodded and made their way as quickly and nonchalantly as they could away from the cemetery. Once they were a reasonable distance away, Cordelia asked, “Now what do we do?

“We’ve got to go to the rec center,” Buffy answered. “That’s where Fred is.”

“How do you know?” Artemis asked.

“Because I overheard the dispatch say there’s an incident going on over there,” Buffy answered. “There’s only one thing I can think of that could happen there that would require police intervention.”

Artemis nodded. “Then we’ve got to get there before the police do. Come on. We don’t have much time.”

Willow’s body impacted hard against the wall, and she let out a groan as she collapsed to the ground. Looking up towards Fred, she raised her Moonlight Stick to block the strike that, had she been a fraction of a second slower, would have lobbed her head off. She then used all of her strength she could muster to force the blade back as she got to her feet.

“I don’t want to fight you, Fred,” she said through clenched teeth.

“Then why did you come?” Fred grunted in reply.

“To help you.”

“If you want to help me, then DIE!” Fred delivered a kicked to Willow’s leg, knocking her off balance. She moved in to strike again, only to find her attempt blocked once more thanks to Willow’s last minute block. This time, however, she twisted her wrist to drive Fred’s blade down to the ground, following up by delivering a kick to her midsection. Fred stumbled backward, her attempt to center herself somewhat dampened by the fact that her head was beginning to hurt.

“It’s not too late, Fred,” Willow said again. “You can come back to us.”

“I don’t want to come back!” Fred shrieked, charging forward and knocking Willow off her feet. Getting back to her feet, she looked down at Willow’s prone body and reached for her sword, preparing to finish her off.

“Mercury, stop!”

Fred looked back towards the stands, Willow doing likewise as she regained consciousness, to find the strange girl they had both seen before. Both were annoyed at seeing her there, though Willow was the only one to voice her annoyance.

“What are you doing here? I told the others I was going to the cemetery.”

The girl smiled and tugged at one of her ears. “I overheard the phone conversation.”

Fred spoke up then. “Who are you?” In response, the girl withdrew her right hand from behind her back, revealing in her hand a cell phone similar to the one Willow herself had been given. Opening it, she touched three buttons on it and raised her arms.

“Luna Prism Power Make Up!”

Willow and Fred watched in silence as, before their very eyes, the girl was enveloped by a bright light, fading moments later to reveal the girl clad in the Soldieresque uniform that Fred herself had first seen her in. Willow was more surprised to find the pair of cat's ears on her head and the tail sticking up from under her skirt.

She smiled and leapt to the ground, affecting a battle stance as she did so. “I am the Soldier of Small and Cute Things, Sailor Luna. And in the name of the moon, I shall punish you.”

Willow didn’t think she was as shocked at any moment since learning of her destiny months ago as she was now, and there had been plenty of opportunities for surprise in that time. Still, seeing an apparently human Luna transform into a Sailor Soldier was certainly right up there as among the more surprising things she had ever seen.

Luna held up her hand, her Moonlight Stick appearing in it. She brought it down and looked towards Fred. “Back away from her, Mercury.”

“I don’t think so.”

The heads of the three combatants turned to watched as Angelus appeared from out of nowhere, making his way towards them, drawing his sword as he did so. Fred looked at him with disgust. “I don’t need your help.”

“I never said I was offering it,” Angelus countered, his eyes fixed on Luna. “I’m much more interested in seeing what this little creature is made of. I’ll leave you to deal with Sailor Moon.” He allowed a snicker to form on his lips. “If you can.”

Fred let a growl escape from behind her throat as Angelus raised her hand, a ball of black light emanating from his palm. “But first, let us ensure that we shall not be bothered by…outside interference.”

Buffy, Cordelia and Anya watched from under cover as the large crowd of individuals, including several police officers and cars, gathered around the entrance to the rec center, trying to get some sense as to what was going on.

“Can’t get in that way,” Buffy stated.

“Looks like they’ve managed to cover our only entrance,” Anya pointed out.

Buffy looked over at her. “Maybe you’d prefer it back at the cemetery.”

“Enough,” Artemis said, appearing from under Cordelia’s legs. “We’ve got to find another way to get in there. Is there any other entrance?”

Before any of the Soldiers could respond, exclamations from the crowd began to build, and bringing their attention back to the rec center, watched in surprised as a black dome enveloped it, obviously making either ingress or egress impossible.

“Only if you happen to have a jackhammer,” Cordelia deadpanned.

Angelus closed his hand and looked towards Mercury. “There. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, what’s say we deal with our respective annoyances?”

Mercury glowered in response, and moved off towards Sailor Moon. Angelus turned to confront the girl, only to stop in mid stride as he noticed that his intended adversary was not where she had been; a quick glance around the immediate area yielding no sign of the young female anywhere in the room.

“Meow.”

Angelus spun around to find the girl standing behind him, a smile on her face and her arms waving madly. He then watched as the girl sped across the room, waving madly at him and letting out that accursed noise every time she did so. She then stopped and blew him a kiss, a pleased smile on her face.

“Insolent pest,” he snarled, moving to confront her, only to watch as she ran off again. He looked around to find out where she had gone, determined to strike her down no matter what it took.

“Here I am!”

He spun around once again at the sound of her voice, not finding the girl it belonged to behind him. It took a moment for him to realize that it wasn’t because the voice had come from behind him.

It had come from above him!

He looked up to the girl, holding a rather large fan in her hands, sailing down towards him. Before he could do anything, the girl brought the fan down directly onto his head.

That, perhaps more than anything else, was what finally drove him over the edge. Letting out a snarl, he brought up his sword and sent an energy attack directly at the girl. Caught off guard, she took the blow full on and rolled away, a light shining across her body as it did so. As she came to a stop, the light faded, revealing in her place what appeared to be a small house pet.

Disgusted by the ease at which he had dispatched his opponent, Angelus looked towards Mercury, watching as she battled Sailor Moon. For a fleeting moment, he thought about moving to help her defeat the leader of the Soldiers, but then reconsidered his action. To do that would be serving Faith’s interest. And that was not what he had come here to do.

”Good luck, Mercury,” he thought as moved off to the side, intent on watching the battle play itself out to whatever conclusion it reached. ”I have no doubt that you shall need it.”

Willow risked a glance over to where Luna had fallen and turned back to her feline form, only to pay for her momentary distraction by having her Moonlight Stick knocked out of her hands. Rolling out of the way of Fred’s follow up attack, she made her way as quickly as she could towards her fallen weapon, preparing to block her next blow, but instead looked up to find Fred held her head in clearly obvious pain.

“Fred?” she hesitantly asked. Fred looked up at looked at Willow, and immediately Willow could tell that there was something different about her. The dark look of anger that had been in her eyes was gone, her face had lost the rage that had masked it before, and she had taken on the gait of a meek and helpless individual restrained by forces beyond her control.

“Willow…help me…”

Willow smiled faintly as Fred spoke to her. “I’m trying, Fred. But…you can help. You can fight this, Fred. You can come back to us. Try. Please try.”

Fred winced, and when she looked up again, her face had changed back to the angry glare that had been on it before. “I told you before, Willow. I don’t want to come back!” She charged towards Willow, who let out a squeal and dove for the door, barging through it and out into the reception area. Turning around to face Fred once again, she found her forward momentum continuing on despite herself, which resulted in her colliding with a chair and falling backward over it, ending up flat on her back. Pain shot through her nervous system, limiting her immediate movement to simply rolling onto her side.

Following Willow out into the room, Fred looked at the fallen form of her former friend as she got to her feet with utter contempt. But to her surprise, that contempt was slowly being replaced with concern for her well being. Letting out a guttural snarl, she raised her sword and brought it down towards Willow’s prone form, hoping that her death would bring about an end to the pain she was feeling.

At the last moment, however, Willow found the strength to get up to her knees, bringing her Moonlight Stick up to block her attack. But instead of blocking her blade, the sword passed through it easily, shattering the weapon into dozens of fragments that scattered throughout the area. Willow collapsed back to the ground, her energy finally spent.

Fred looked down at Willow’s body, a smile of satisfaction on her face. How easy it would be now to take her life. Suddenly something within her snapped, driving the feelings of pain, hurt and anger from her as easily as the sun dissipates fog, and making her realize how wrong that statement was. Blinking her eyes, as if she was waking from a deep sleep, she looked towards Willow’s fallen form and, shocked at seeing her like that, ran towards her and began to gently shake her body.

“Willow? Willow? Wake up. Oh, please god, wake up!” Willow didn’t respond to Fred’s prompting. Taking notice of the weapon in her hand, her blood ran cold as she came to a sudden, and quite horrific, realization.

”I did that to her. I hurt her.”

She threw the sword away and quickly moved to sit Willow up, the action causing her tiara to slip from her forehead, hitting the ground and splitting in two. Fred looked at the broken tiara in despair and, holding Willow’s body and rocking her back and forth, let out a wail.

The sound of clapping brought her head up to find Angelus stepping through the doorway. Tears streaming down her face, she held onto Willow’s unconscious form, determined to protect her the best she could given the circumstances.

“Congratulations, Sailor Mercury,” he said. “You’ve killed your best friend.” He moved to unsheathe his sword, pointing it directly at Fred’s chin. “And now, for your reward, allow me to send you down the path to join her.”

Fred closed her eyes, knowing that she had this coming. So when the pain of approaching death didn’t come, she opened her eyes to find Xander standing beside Angelus, one of his daggers blocking the sword’s downward path.

“What are you doing?!” Angelus snarled.

“What my Queen commands,” Xander replied. Angelus responded by inverting his arm, driving the dagger away and delivering a kick to Xander’s midsection.

“Insolent wretch!” He turned back to Mercury. “We’ll finish this another time.” Brining his cape up in a flourish, he disappeared, Xander doing likewise moments later, but not before casting one final glance at the fallen Soldiers.

Fred watched them go, looking down at Willow’s unconscious form. At that moment, one thought made itself clear inside her head.

“I’ve gotta get out of here!”

Before I post this next update, I have to get something off my chest. I am incredibly annoyed and extremely disappointed about the fact that I am doing so when, after nearly two and a half weeks, there has been no response at all to the last one. This wouldn't bother me nearly as much as it does were it not for several factors: the fact that, of all the stories I have thus far written, I consider this one to be my finest work, the fact that this if not the first time that a long period of time between updates where I have not recieved any feedback has happened and the fact that there are some people out there who would consider my frustrations and disappointment selfish and claim that the lack of feedback for this story is is generally due to low readership in Pens, even though I've seen other stories here that get more than a few feedback responses in the same amount of time that this story has seen absolutely none, which tells me that I am either not doing something other writers are, or people simply aren't interested in reading my work.

And quite honestly, if I were to believe even for a moment that the latter is true, it really has to make me ask two very important questions: if this story isn't that interesting to anyone, why should it be interesting to me, and why should I put a majority of my time, effort and energy into writing it? And quite frankly, I have no answer to those questions.

I have to admit though, that despite all that I have just said, I can honestly believe why this story hasn't been read by a lot of people and why I haven't gotten any real feedback from a lot of people, given that the subject matter may be offputting to anyone with bad memories of the dubbed anime. Though to be honest, if that really is the reason why so many of you aren't reading it, then I have no real choice but to be even more insulted by that, because not only is that making unwarranted assumptions about the story in general, but it also insults my ability as a writer to make any story, regardless on the subject matter upon which it is based, interesting to the general audience.

In the end, however, I probably have to accept that, despite my hopes that this story (and in general, the other stories I have written, the complaints I have brought up here applying to them as well) will gain new readers and more substantial feedback, I'll probably have to continue on getting, at best, only one or two reviews. Which is sad, really, because the first ever story I wrote, which I also consider to be a good work of art, also suffered from a lack of feedback while I was writing it, and it eventually got to the point where, despite how much I liked writing it, I eventually just gave up on it, and it's languished in the bowels of limbo ever since.

[center]Chapter Five: Welcome Home, Fred![/center]

Willow slowly drifted back to consciousness the first thing she thought of the amazing fact that she was doing so in the first place. Given the ferocity of Fred’s assault against her, it was all but inevitable that she would end her life the moment the opportunity presented itself. Of course, she wasn’t about to feel bad that she was still alive because…well, not being dead was a very good thing. A very, very good thing. But knowing that she was still alive didn’t help her figure out any explanations as to why.

A moan drew her attention across the room, where she found Luna’s similarly unconscious form stirring to full alertness. Crawling over to her on her hands and knees, Willow paused as Luna’s body was enveloped by a bright light, which faded after a few moments and left in the feline’s place the strange girl. Willow wondered for a moment what had just happened before she recalled the events prior to the fight, and how the girl had suddenly appeared and revealed herself to be Luna. She also remembered the surprise that she had felt at that moment, and knew that there were lots of questions that needed to be answered.

Surprisingly, however, the one that came to mind most readily at the moment had nothing at all to do with any of that. “Luna, are you OK?”

Luna shook her head as she got to her feet. “About as well as can be expected Willow, all things considered.” She looked at Willow approvingly. “You did well.” She then took in her surroundings. “What happened to Fred?”

“I don’t know,” Willow responded, likewise getting to her feet. “But I’m going to go find out.”

A lengthy silence followed before Luna responded. “Willow…”

“No, Luna,” Willow said, turning away from her guardian and friend, in order to avoid having her see the tears that were starting to well up in her eyes. ”We’re still alive for a reason, Luna. Fred wouldn’t have just left us behind if she was still under the influence of the enemy, and they most certainly wouldn’t have left us all alone unless something had happened to scuttle their plans. And all roads in this lead to Fred’s current condition. I noticed something during the fight. She came…out. Of the spell, I mean. She was normal for a few moments. If she shook off the enemy’s influence while we were out, she’s really confused at the moment, and she won’t know what to do. We…I have to find her and stop her from doing something to harm herself.”

Willow stopped talking, her heart beginning to break. She knew that Luna couldn’t understand what it was she was feeling, so there wasn’t any point in trying to explain it to her. She was thus surprised to find her fingers intertwining into her own, the comforting pressure she put on it letting her know that not only did she understand, she knew that it was something she had to do on her own without her help. It was a silent testament to the friendship the two of them shared, and how they, through trial and error, had come to understand one another better than they had when they had first met.

“Go.”

Willow was off within moments of hearing Luna speak, Luna herself looking off in the direction she had gone for several more moments before heading off in the opposite direction.

Artemis and the others, still looking at the chaos happening outside the rec center, watched in surprise as the dome covering the building collapsed. Surprise was soon turned to dismay, however, as the police quickly moved inside the building, cutting off any attempt to enter through that entrance, and the crowd of sufficient size to prevent sneaking around to try and find another.

Frustration soon set in among the group, and they spent a few moments debating whether or not to try to get in anyway when a familiar form emerged from a vent near the top of the building, its presence unnoticed by a crowd more intent on finding out what was going on through the windows of the building, but immediately noticed by the small group hiding some distance away that was looking for anything strange or unusual.

And the figure certainly fell into both categories, both for her presence and the way she composed herself, if it was possible for a cat to be nervous. “Luna!”

Luna made her way over towards the others, trying her best to act for the entire world as if there was nothing wrong, but more or less failing in her attempt. “Come on. Let’s get out of here before someone notices.”

“Hold on a minute,” Anya interrupted, her tone on the verge of anger. “What’s going on here? First you and Artemis disappear for days on end without any explanation, then something seriously big happens involving the enemy, only we’re on the other side of town about to get thrown into prison because Willow tricked us.” Looking towards the others, and seeing the dirty looks on their faces, Anya crossed her arms over her chest before turning back to Luna. “I think we deserve some sort of an explanation for all of this, Luna.”

“And you’ll get it,” Luna responded, her tone of voice polite but impatient. “But not here.” She then made her way off, her tail wagging behind her in a clear betrayal of her nervousness. Cordelia and Buffy moved to follow her, Anya and Artemis exchanging a look before joining them a few moments later.

Willow, now transformed back to her civilian guise, made her way through the crowd as swiftly as she could, thanking whatever deity it was that allowed her to get out of the rec center without encountering the police, and wondering how she knew where Fred had gone. It was as if she had some sort of internal radar that immediately picked up on her, a gut feeling, if you will. She wasn’t exactly sure that she should trust that feeling, though, as doing that sort of thing had often gotten her into trouble before.

But maybe, she wondered as she stepped inside a nearby building and made her way to the nearest staircase, this time would be different.

It had to be different.

For Fred’s sake.

Fred stood on the balcony, having reverted back to her civilian form and holding her sword in both hands, casting her gaze between it and the ground below. Her heart ached as the events of the past several weeks came back to her as easily as if they were memories of Christmas morning, when she was a five year old child going to the tree to see what Santa had left for her, of spending time with her grandparents and playing a game of chess with her great grandmother.

The only difference being that these memories were not of happy holidays with friends and relatives, but haunting images of the pain and suffering she had knowingly brought upon her friends, and the undeniable knowledge that she had enjoyed every moment of it.

That was what hurt her the most; not that she knew that she was harming her friends, but the fact that, deep down in her heart, she had wanted to do all of what she had done to them. It would have been different if she could somehow justify that she had been coerced into doing what she had done, but the truth was that, with everything bad that had been going on with them back then, she had wanted very much to lash out at them; the four of them never realizing that their petty arguments about every little thing and the single mindedness they showed towards their own viewpoints was destroying her emotionally, making the normally pacifistic and docile Fred a boiling pot that would have threatened to spill over had the enemy not gotten to her first and used that disgust to shape her into a tool for their own twisted uses.

Fred felt a tear run down her cheek, and closed her eyes. Then in a sudden flash of anger, reared back with all of her strength and threw the sword as far as she could into the distance. She didn’t bother to track its course; she wouldn’t need it ever again.

She opened her eyes and looked down to the ground below. The forces of the Dark Kingdom had left her behind for only one reason: now that their hold over her was gone, she was no longer useful to their purposes. And she knew that, because of what she had done, Willow and the others would never accept her back, her actions no doubt branding her a detriment to their cause.

The only solution appeared to be to step off the balcony and fall to her death. She was no longer a pawn of the enemy, and would be seen as a liability to her friends. Death seemed to be the only way to ease her guilt.

The sound of a door opening from behind caught her notice, but she paid it only the briefest of concerns. There was only one person who would be foolish enough to follow her here.

“Hello, Willow.”

“Hi, Fred,” came Willow’s response. She then noticed Fred’s stance and realized that she had arrived just in time. “You want to step down from there?”

“I can’t, Willow,” Fred replied simply. “I’ve…I’ve done too much. I can never go back.”

“I know,” Willow said, then caught herself and hastily added. “I mean…I know you’ve done so much, but you can come back. You were under the enemy’s control…”

“But they didn’t manipulate my mind, Willow,” Fred stated blandly. “They only magnified what was already in my heart. On some primal level, I wanted to do all that I did to you.” She broke down and began to cry. “I…I can’t live with the pain, Willow.”

“I know,” Willow replied, keeping silent her own knowledge of what Fred was facing at the moment, as she knew the other girl wasn’t ready to hear what she had learned the other day. “But you can do your best to atone for it.” She stepped forward hesitantly, knowing that a false move on her part could send Fred plunging to her death.

Stopping beside her, she looked up at Fred’s face. “You’ve been through a lot, Fred. And you’ve made some mistakes. But you can work to make things right again. I can’t speak for the others, but I want you to come back to us.” Then, unworried that her words might provoke that which she hoped to avoid, added, “You said that you hated those at school because you thought that they were jealous of your talents and skills, and generally not liking you all that much. Well…I was among their number at one time. But I’ve tried to atone for my mistakes when we learned of our mutual destiny. I tried to make you feel as part of the group, that you could always come to me with your problems. I’ve even risked my life to try to help you, Fred. Would I have done that if I didn’t care for you?”

Fred found her resolve to take her own life waving under Willow’s words, the sincerity she detected in them breaking through the shell of pain she had built up around her heart. She turned to look at Willow, finding the redhead looking back at her with a forgiving face and her arms outstretched, clearly beckoning for her to come to her.

“We can make things right, Fred, but not if you take your own life. Come back to us. We can make it all better.”

The ice around Fred’s heart melted, and uninhibited by embarrassment, she leapt into Willow’s arms, clinging tightly to her as she cried out her pain and frustrations. Willow settled the both of them down on the ground, but otherwise didn’t say or do anything to silence her. She simply allowed herself to comfort Fred, the first step in what would most likely be a long road to recovery.

”I’m sorry, Will. I’m so, so sorry.”

“It’s OK, Fred. Let it out. I’m here. I’m here.”


Faith grimaced as she watched the display on the crystal ball in front of her throne, then reached forward to pick it up and throw it against the nearby wall, where it shattered impressively, scattering glass all around the immediate area. She then brought her full furor towards the two who had been responsible for the events she had just seen.

“You two have failed me.”

Xander, on his knees, was practically pleading for his life, “My Queen, it was not my wish to do so…”

“BE SILENT!” Faith’s dark eyes grew darker as she passed her glances towards both Xander and Angelus, noting the differences in their composure; Xander was all but a nervous wreck, no doubt convinced that his life would be ended at this very moment. Angelus, on the other hand, gave off the appearance of a man who had just won an important victory, a feeling that Faith was quick to dispel, raising a hand and sending tendrils of dark energy coursing from it and all over his body.

To his credit, Angelus refused to give Faith the satisfaction of doing what Xander had done, and shame himself by cowering in fear. He bore the pain well, as any warrior whose courage born in the heat of battle should. After a few moments, the enjoyment she got from seeing him suffer, as did most things that amused her, quickly bored her, and she lowered her hand, raising her other in a dismissive gesture. “Despite your actions, I am sparing your lives, as you are still useful to me. Now leave my sight before I change my mind.”

The pair made their way out of the throne room, Xander as quickly as he could, Angelus less so. She then looked up at Spike, who had made his way into her presence. “What is it that you want?”

“My Queen,” came the reply. “I would suggest that, now that the enemy is back to full strength, we should perhaps…limit our attempts to revive Metallia until we can strike without failure.”

Faith rested her head in her hand. “And why should I believe that you think this is the best course of action to take? You seem to have taken little interest in our glorious mission as of late.”

Spike visibly stiffened. “I…I don’t know what you mean…” His attempt to explain himself was cut short when Faith turned her steel gaze on him.

“Don’t worry,” she said, a smile on her face. “I’m not angry that you’ve attempted to contact her. In fact, you could say that you’ve done me a favour.”

“How?”

Faith’s smile turned devilish. “By preparing her for what’s to come.”

“So let me see if I get this straight,” Anya said, sitting at the table, Buffy and Cordelia at her side, all three of them looking towards Luna, who was at the table’s opposite end; only it wasn’t Luna’s feline form, but the young girl they had encountered earlier in the day. Naturally, the three of them had trouble wrapping their heads around the idea that this young girl was the one who had trained them all to fight the enemy, even after she had explained to them how it had happened. “When Willow unleashed the power of the Crystal, you gained the power to transform into a human being, and have been working behind the scenes towards stopping Fred, with the intention of stopping whatever the enemy was doing to her.”

“Yes,” Luna replied simply.

“And there’s a reason why you didn’t tell us, right?”

“Yes.”

“And that is?”

Luna let out a sigh. “I wanted to help you.” Seeing their confused expressions, she added, “Artemis and I…well, we…we…”

“Used us,” Anya stated with characteristic untactfulness, drawing annoyed glares from her comrades, but a look of understanding from Luna.

“Yes. Artemis and I agreed that I should use my new powers to help undo all of the problems we’ve caused you.”

“And so you decided to leave Willow all alone while she went off on her own after Fred?” Buffy asked. “Not exactly helpful, is that?”

Luna cast her gaze down to the floor. “She wanted to go by herself. There was nothing I could do.” She looked up and turned her gaze to each of them. “And besides…I have a feeling.”

“’A feeling’,” Anya scoffed. “Oh, yeah. That’s a good thing to hinge the life of the Princess on.”

Luna looked up at Anya. “But if it leads to the return of Fred, would you consider it a bad idea?”

Anya let out a shrug. “Not really.”

“But we don’t have any idea that it will actually work,” Cordelia replied. “I mean, for all we know, it could be a trap set up by the enemy to lull us into a false sense of security. We know deception isn’t beyond their capabilities.”

The door opened before Luna could respond, and the four turned to look as Willow stepped into the room, using one hand to keep the door open. Luna smiled.

“I guess you know now,” she replied. The others looked up in relief at Willow, only to stop as Fred stepped into the room behind her. Turning to look at Willow, they saw in her face a look of happiness, her green eyes sparkling with delight, a look that dropped as she gave each of them a look, the unspoken declaration on her face that Fred was back to normal, and that any action taken on their part to treat her badly would be met with harsh words from her. And knowing that such actions from her were rare, it was not a sight they were either looking forward to seeing nor entirely excited to create.

Fred offered a small wave. “Hi, guys.”

Cordelia, Buffy and Luna got up from their chairs and moved to embrace their returning companion, offering her kind words and loving gestures. Artemis, standing nearby, noted that Anya made no move to join them, and leapt up on the table. “What’s wrong?”

Anya shook her head. “Nothing.” She got up and looked down at Artemis. “I’m going for a walk to clear my head.”

Artemis nodded, and watched as Anya, after looking at the others, made her way out of the room. Although he hadn’t said it, he knew that there was something troubling her, but felt it would be best to leave her be for the time being.

This was, after all, a time for celebration. What could possibly go wrong now?

Walking down the street, Anya paused and turned off into an alleyway. Slumping against the wall, she looked up into the sky as she felt further down the alley a familiar presence making itself known to her. “What now?”

“I need a decision from you,” Spike replied, moving to stand beside Anya. “Faith’s putting into motion actions that will cause our mutual destruction if she’s allowed to continue unopposed.”

Anya shook her head. “I just…I just don’t think its right. We can’t work together against the best interests of our respective leaders.”

“Even if it means they’ll end up killing us all?”

Anya let out a sigh. No matter how she chose to think about the brewing situation, it always invariably led back to that. And as much as she wanted to respect Willow as a friend and a leader, she had to look out for her best interests, even if that meant having to keep Tara out of her life by any means necessary.

“All right,” she said, turning to look at Spike. “I’m with you.”

Tara had settled down to relax after a rather stressful day and, having failed to find any solace in her favorite book, chose to watch some television instead. It proved to be a mistake; as after changing the channel for several seconds, she happened upon a station that was broadcasting a most disturbing report.

…”the latest in a series of bizarre events that have been occurring throughout Sunnydale in the last several weeks, the rec center has been enveloped by some sort of energy barrier. All attempts to penetrate it have thus far proven fruitless. And key witnesses have come forward to report that, prior to the barrier’s appearance, some kind of situation was going on inside…”

Tara’s blood ran colder than ice water at the video on her television screen, knowing instantly that this was the attack by the enemy that she had feared would happen and that Willow was in the thick of it. Being caught flat footed in a situation like this deeply embarrassed her, especially considering that, in the past, she had an uncanny ability to detect wherever there was danger and get there in time to help Sailor Moon deal with the problem.

Of course, things were easier back then. She didn’t know what she knew now, that instead of helping Sailor Moon protect Willow from the evil that was invading the Earth, she was helping Willow, who, much like herself, had been putting her life in danger nearly every night. And the worse thing was they were trying to fight off an enemy that had already attacked the planet, and had already defeated them, and it was starting to look less and less likely that they could defeat them.

”And it’s all because of us,” Tara thought, the memories of what she had learned last night causing the stress she had been suffering today. Knowing that, having loved Willow in her past life, and that their love had been the reason why they were currently facing off against this powerful enemy deeply sobered her.

She continued to take notice of the news broadcast until the barrier collapsed, which ironically did not make her feel any better. It hadn’t helped her psyche that she had been on edge even before learning what she had learned yesterday, and that the events of the past twenty four hours had made her more antsy about the threat the world faced, especially since her concern was dramatically shifting from the well being of the whole of the citizens of the world to both Willow’s and her own personal safety.

To calm her frayed nerves, she decided to go to the Espresso Pump, where she currently was, looking out at the passing traffic as she sipped at her drink, the irony that her actions were not doing what she had set out to do, chiefly calm her down, not entirely lost on her.

Suddenly Tara felt the hairs on the back of her neck raise, and turned to find Willow’s friend Amy standing behind her. “Hi,” she said.

“Hi,” Tara replied, her guard lowering somewhat as she recognized who it was that was approaching. “You’re Amy, right?”

Amy nodded, moving to sit down beside Tara, the blonde not really doing anything to suggest that the other girl’s presence was unwarranted. Not that she really wanted her to be around, but if someone else was around her, maybe it would help calm her nerves.

Searching for a topic with which to do so, Tara said, “So…Willow tells me you’re going out with…a friend of yours?”

“What?” Amy started, caught off guard by Tara’s words. Then she blushed and allowed a small smile to form on her lips. “Yeah. Jonathan’s a good guy, even if he does tend to speak in computer code and Klingon half the time.” Tara smiled at that, but her hope that this could lead to a stress free conversation was immediately dashed as Amy changed topics. “Listen, I wanted to talk to you about Willow…”

Tara gritted her teeth. Amy may not have been aware of it, but discussion about the redhead wasn’t exactly what she wanted to do at the moment, especially towards one whom she knew had never exactly shown the greatest approval of their relationship. “Look, Amy. I know that you’ve never been comfortable about our relationship…”

“It’s not that,” Amy interrupted, and Tara immediately took notice of the fact that there was something about the way she composed herself that made her want to know what it was that she had to say.

“I’m worried about her,” Amy continued, looking out the window. “I’ve known Willow for a long time, and so I would like to think I know her better than anyone, even her own parents.” She gave a sheepish smile, remembering who she was talking to. “Present company excluded, of course. In any case, it couldn’t have escaped your notice that Willow’s been acting a little…strange, has it?”

”More than you know, Amy,” Tara thought as she nodded in reply. Amy took a deep breath and let it out slowly.

“What I mean is that Willow’s starting to not act like…Willow. I know it sounds strange, but I’m beginning to think that Willow’s starting to become a whole other person, and I don’t think it’s a good thing.” Tara looked into Amy’s face, finding in her expression a concerned friend who was reaching out to the only person she knew who could help the one she was concerned about. Tara fought to keep the smile off her face as she realized how close to the truth Amy really was.

“And you fear that she’ll do something bad?” Tara asked.

Amy nodded. “I just don’t want her to hurt herself. I couldn’t exactly go to her parents about this. You know how they are, right?” Tara didn’t respond and Amy, oblivious, continued, “You’re the only one I know that I can say this to, if only because I know that you’re the only one I can believe will something about this. You care for her as much as I do, and I know that you won’t let anything bad happen to her.”

Tara reached out and took Amy’s hand into her own. “I promise you, Amy. I’ll do anything I can to bring Willow back to normal.” Amy nodded in approval, and got up to leave.

“I didn’t mean to intrude,” she said. “I can see that you’re busy.”

Tara smiled faintly. “Actually, you’ve been a big help. Thank you.” She watched as Amy walked out of the Espresso Pump and, after finishing her drink, moved to follow her example and leave. She had walked halfway back to her home when she encountered a second figure, a blonde in a pink dress and matching high heeled shoes that looked for the world to be blocking her progress.

“Hello,” Tara said warily.

“Hi!” the blonde replied, her voice perhaps a little too sugary for Tara’s taste. “You’re Tara, right?”

“Yes,” Tara answered, her defenses going up ever so slightly as she searched her memory for the blonde’s name. It suddenly came to her as she recalled Willow speaking of a new friend she had made at school. “You’re Harmony, right?”

“Yeah!” the blonde responded, if possible, even more chirpily as she made her way over to Tara. “I’ve got a message for you.”

“Yes?”

Stopping directly in front of Tara, Harmony reached up and put a hand on her shoulder. “There’s someone who wants to meet you.”

Tara was confused for a moment, but that confusion was broken as she felt herself being pulled away from where she was standing. She struggled to fight it, but found her will to fight weakening under the surprisingly strong grip of the girl in front of her, a girl that appeared to be no stronger than your average teenage girl.

But then there was something about her that shifted, ever so slightly, and suddenly Tara found herself looking not at a pink clad teenage girl, but a purple garbed Amazon woman, her long brunette hair flowing about her head and her face a look of triumph.

And it was on this image that her brain finally overloaded and she blacked out under the strain of being pulled in all directions.

Oh no! That's Faith, right? No good can come of this!

Okay, now that my exclamations of surprise are out of the way, down to the real feedback. I'm really sorry that I missed your last update. My Pens reading has been more sporadic of late, and so I didn't know that you had updated previous to today. I find it really interesting that Luna can transform but Artemis can not (at least that's the way I took it). It seems that she's beginning to play a larger role in events, and somehow that seems sort of unbalanced to me. Maybe because of all the LIES that are going around. And Anya's consorting with the enemy can't be good. Although it leads me to believe that Anya and Spike had some sort of connection to each other in their previous life, before Faith did a number on him. I'm really interested to see how that plays out. It also seems like the girls (except for Anya) accept Fred's return fairly easily. Is this spawned by their own feelings of guilt, both from letting her get captured and not including her more before? If so, it would be really really easy for Faith to manipulate that. I'm not sure how, but it would. And I'm not really sure what to think about Amy coming up to Tara like that. I mean, she could just be a concerned friend, or she could have nefarious intentions, you know? Okay, so I'm probably just suspicious because I don't really like Amy, but still.

Now, onto the big cliff-hanger. There are two possible women who could be Tara's captor, and I don't think it could be Metallia because she isn't in physical form yet, right? (I could just be remembering/interpreting incorrectly.) Either way, this is categorically NOT A GOOD THING. Or is it? If Tara is temporarily removed from the picture but not caused to work against Willow and Co., could some of the previous destruction be avoided? Or will Willow just be too distracted to put up a good fight, leading to a quicker annihilation? Oh god, so many questions!

Once again Alex, this is a really well-written update, and I have to applaud how much your writing skills have developed. You've created a very clear story that is packed with action while at the same time being very compact. Whether or not you choose to continue the story, I do feel that this is your most well-written work, and you can justly be very proud of it.

Amber: Yeah, this cliffy was a bit of evil, but it has to happen.

First off, about your concerns for Amy. Yeah, I can see where you might think that, but let me ask you this: if she really had nefarious intentions towards Willow and Tara, do you think she would talk to Tara about Willow's state of mind. Regardless of how she may have ended up in Buffy canon, here she's very much a friend of Willow, and wants to make sure she's safe and happy.

Fred's return...yeah, I'll admit that was a bit rushed, but that's because I had to do what the PGSM writers had eight episodes to deal with: make Fred/Ami evil and have her work against the others, only to come out of it once she realized how much she hurt Willow/Usagi. It was one of my favorite parts of PGSM, and something I wanted to incorporate here (especially given how much the idea of an Evil Fred works, thanks to Illyria...), but I admit it probably could have been handled a whole bunch better.

The thing with Luna...yeah, I can see where you're coming from. As I said before, in the manga, they both can turn into humans (they are actually humanoids from a distant planet that take feline form), but that wasn't the direction they wanted to take in PGSM. The reason why it seems a little unbalanced is...because it is. Tokusatsu series such as PGSM are infamous for introducing a sixth character into a group of five warriors who almost immediately becomes the focus of the series (which Luna kinda sorta was, though it's balanced out a bit by having her act a fair bit of the time, for lack of a better term, wonky. See here for a prime example.) I will say, however, that Luna isn't likely to be to hog the spotlight much. It is, at the end of the day, all about Willow and Tara.

And speaking of them, yeah. It's getting kinda complicated with them, what with Anya and Spike teaming up to work against her (which is what Minako and Zoicite did in PGSM to help prevent what happened in the past from happening again) and Faith working her mojo to spirit Tara away.

It's all going to come together in the next bit, which I'll admit is coming along slower than I would like, but that's because I'm dealing with very important subject matter which needs to be handled carefully. Not to mention the fact that I have the persistant feeling that only one or two people are actually reading this, so the idea that I have to do regular updates (or any updates, to be frank) isn't that much in the forefront of my mind.

I would like to do more frequent updates, sure. I'd also like to see this story get more readers. But I ask you, which of those is more likely to happen?

Sorry for the super late feedback. It has been super killer these couple of months and the only time i can read fics are on the train... which doesn't really sit well when I already don't have enough sleep and looks more zombie than zombie and then screaming "NOOOOOOOOO~ WHO DARE HURTS TARA?!" on a super crowded train. :blush

Anyways, great update as usual. It got my blood boiled when Anya decided to team up with Spike in last couple of updates... someone should tell her that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. But Fred's back, so good for her. Poor Amy though, while it's great that Willow and Tara managed to remember their past lives, but it seems that one way or another Amy's gonna losing her best friend... um... :paranoid

waiting for more... :pray

[center]Chapter Six: Showdown[/center]

Willow looked up as Anya reentered the room and gave her a look as she turned away from Fred, apparently not willing to go over to her. She then watched as, caught under her hawk eyed glare, Anya sighed and capitulated, making her way towards Fred and giving her some kind words.

It was clear, however, that she was doing so not out of a genuine desire to make Fred feel better about being used as a pawn by the enemy, but simply out of courtesy to her. It deeply troubled Willow that Anya was behaving this way. When they had talked before after learning about her illness, she had appeared to open up and begin to feel at ease about the situation and her new role in it. Now, however, she appeared to be slipping back into her old patterns and way of thinking, believing beyond a shadow of a doubt that she was the only one who knew what was best and to hell with anyone who disagreed.

And now there was the growing feeling in the pit of her stomach that she would end up doing something that would bring about a problem that they might not be able to solve.

She felt a hand on her arm and turned to look at Luna, and found her looking back with a concerned expression on her face. “You’re worried, aren’t you, Willow?”

Willow nodded in response. “Something’s coming, Luna. I can feel it. All the monsters we’ve been fighting, all the battles we’ve had up until now… I get the feeling that it’s nothing compared to what’s coming soon. And I can’t help but feel….” She paused, and Luna could see that there was more to her hesitation than she was letting on.

“What?”

“That there’s something coming,” Willow finished. “Something we might not be able to…” Her dialog came to a sudden end as a stabbing pain worked its way into her brain, causing her to cry out. At the same moment, Cordelia shot to her feet and followed suit with a cry of her own.

Both actions did not go unnoticed. “What is it?” Buffy asked.

“Something’s happened,” Cordelia answered. “Something bad. And we have to find out what it was.”

“How?” Fred asked, and no sooner did she do so than did Willow provide them a means, by getting up from where she sat and heading out of the room, the door closing nosily behind her.

“I guess we follow her.”

“Are you up for that?” Cordelia asked. “I mean, can you handle going back into battle so soon after you…well, you know…”

“I’m…I’m not sure,” Fred responded. “I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to handle it, to be honest. But I know that sitting here doing nothing isn’t going to be helpful to anyone.”

“Fine,” Anya exclaimed, clearly not pleased at the idea of having her come along, but realizing that debating the issue would take time that they obviously did not have. She turned to look at Luna. “Luna, do you have any idea what…” Anya came up short as she completed her turn, finding Luna at the table, her upper body slumped over the table, her eyes closed.

”She’s fallen asleep! Unbelievable!”

“Go,” Artemis said. “I’ll stay here with her.”

Letting out an irritated groan, Anya gestured to the others as the group moved out the door to follow Willow, the common thought among them the same: the longer they delayed, the further away Willow would get, and the more likely it would be that she would be left alone to confront whatever danger awaited them.

Tara awoke to the sight of gravel mere inches from her face and, pushing herself to her feet, took immediate notice of her surroundings as she dusted herself off. It appeared to be a deserted stretch of land somewhere near the outskirts of Sunnydale, which didn’t make her too happy. To have been sent here where no one would be able to see what was going on, not to mention help her, didn’t give her any good feeling about her life expectancy.

”Especially since I have a pretty good idea who’s behind this,” she thought to herself. ”Strange girls just don’t appear out of nowhere and spirit me halfway across town.” A small smirk appeared on her face. ”Well, not without a car, anyway…”

The humor of her comment was a clear attempt to find amusement in the situation, but it really didn’t seem to work all that well, as several seconds later, she heard the sound of laughter coming from behind her. Turning on her heel, Tara saw the woman she had seen shortly before she had been teleported, her dark, unfeeling eyes drilling directly into Tara, causing the hair on the back of the blonde’s neck to raise.

“So, Endymion, we meet again.”

The words gave Tara an uncomfortable feeling, especially in light of the fact that Faith said them as she was looking over Tara as one would inspect a piece of meat. She had to throw up some sort of defense, if only to keep Faith from knowing how unnerved she was. “I…I don’t know…I don’t know what you’re…”

Tara knew that the moment she began stuttering, she had failed in her attempt, a feeling all the more punctuated by Faith’s bitter laugh. “How pathetic it is to see the Princess of the Earth reduced to a gibbering, stuttering mess. One has to wonder why Serenity sent you into the future. If she had any idea that this is how you would turn out, I doubt she would have bothered.”

Tara’s face remained impassive, though her anger was starting to grow. It would be wise on her part not to let that anger show. This was a woman who had annihilated an entire kingdom out of her desire to harm Willow and herself, and over the past few months, she had demonstrated a remarkable desire to accomplish that goal again by whatever means were necessary to her.

But what could she do about her now? She had built up a mystique and aura around her person in the guise of what Willow and the others referred to as Tuxedo Mask, but that mystique had been fading in light of the actions that had brought them all to this moment, and there was nothing she felt she could do as plain old Tara Maclay against one who wanted her dead.

She was about to respond when she noticed Faith’s head look past her shoulder, and her face break out into a wide grin. “How ironic; in the past, she was in danger, and you came to her rescue, only to perish at my hand.”

Tara turned around to see a quintet of figures approaching, and although she knew all of them, she was distressed to see who was leading the way.

“How fitting it shall be to see her try and fail at the same task you attempted so long ago.”

”Willow, no!”

Willow had gone two blocks from the Bronze before the others had caught up with her, and despite her insistence that they head back and wait for her, they told her plainly that she needed their help to deal with whatever she was heading off to face. She had relented, but found herself irritated by their actions, regardless of how well intentioned they were.

Tara was in danger. How she knew that, she hadn’t a clue. Perhaps the past few days had given her some sort of sixth sense that could tell her when her girlfriend was in danger. Even before she knew Tara’s true role in everything that had happened, Willow wanted to protect her, but the feeling hadn’t been as strong then as it was now.

”What has happened that makes this different?” she asked. The answer came soon after they left town, having found a place to transform into their Soldier forms, as they arrived in a field to find Tara confronted by a young woman in a purple dress that she recognized as Faith. Seeing the situation playing out in front of her, Willow was immediately on edge, and she saw Fred flinch involuntarily as well. It was obvious that despite what she had said earlier, Fred still had emotional baggage from what had happened to her. Willow could understand what it was she was feeling. Like her, she recognized the threat that Faith presented to the world.

“Faith.” The word left her mouth in a hushed whisper, barely audible to those around her. Nevertheless, the response was met with a mirthless laugh from the woman in question. “Welcome, Princess. Come to try and save your love?”

Willow stiffened, her face putting on what she referred to as her “resolve” face. “I’ll do whatever I can to stop you.”

Faith’s smile turned deadly as she spread her arms. “Your mother tried to stop me. She obviously failed. What makes you think that you can succeed where she failed?”

“She has the power of love on her side,” Anya replied, uncoiling the chain from her waist. “And she has friends who will stand by her side no matter what.”

Faith let out a cackle. “Ah, yes. ‘Friends.’” She turned towards Fred. “You hear that, Mercury? They still consider you a friend, despite all that you have done to them.”

“They know what you did to me,” Fred said a little shakily. “And they’ve forgiven me for what I’ve done.”

“Really?” Faith mused, looking towards Anya. “What about her?”

Willow raised an eyebrow. “What about her?”

Faith’s smile widened. “You really don’t know, do you?”

“Know what?” Willow snapped, her frustration at playing this game growing, especially as Faith let out another laugh, a sound that was beginning to irritate her.

“You’re as oblivious now as you were in the past, Princess. You seem to think that I am the greatest danger that you face. But all the while, the greatest threat to your cause has been among you.”

Willow turned to Anya, refusing to believe Faith’s words. No matter what she had done before, and for all the trouble she had caused them, whether recent or ancient, intentional or accidental, the conversation they had near Christmas told her that she wouldn’t go out of her way to do anything that would endanger their lives.

But the look on the blonde’s face told Willow all she needed to know. The others noticed as well, and while all three looked especially pained, particularly Cordelia and Fred, Cordelia was the only one to voice her anger. “Why?”

“You know why,” Anya responded without emotion. “I told you before that keeping Willow and Tara apart was the only way to keep the world safe. It was their love that brought about the tragedy of the past, and I had to make sure it didn’t happen again.”

“And since we didn’t agree with you, you went behind our backs and consorted with the enemy?” Buffy asked.

“I didn’t do anything,” Anya retorted. “One of them came to me. I didn’t want to agree, but as you can see, the situation has spiraled out of control so much that I had to consider whatever options I could.”

Faith brought her attention back to Tara. “You see, Endymion? You and your love cannot be together. Doing so will only result in the destruction of the world.”

Tara recovered a small shred of resolve. “And letting you get away with what you’ve done won’t?”

Faith’s face contorted. “You misunderstand. I want to rule the world, not destroy it. That cannot be done while you and the others stand in my way.”

“You can’t think that we’ll stand by and let you get away with that, do you?” Cordelia asked.

Faith smiled bitterly as she brought her arms back down. “Of course not, but if you need to be persuaded otherwise…” Moments later, she threw her arms back as lightning bolts erupted from her hands, four of them striking the ground near her feet, which soon transmuted into the forms of Faith’s warriors. Willow saw the expression on Tara’s face change from one of anger to one of shocked surprise, and sympathized with the situation she now faced; irrelevant to how Anya and the others saw them, they alone knew the truth about them, and how Faith had used them to her own ends.

For their part, they appeared to be just as surprised to be there as they were to seeing them there. Then they noticed where they were, and more importantly, who they were facing. Then they drew their weapons, Willow and the others moving into combat mode, prepared once again to fight in the name of love and justice and defend the Earth from the threat to its people.

And in one moment, Faith changed everything. With a snap of her fingers, she had her warriors move their weapons to strike, only it was not towards the Soldiers, neither was it towards Tara.

Instead, their weapons were poised to deliver a mortal blow to themselves.

Willow’s eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets. “What are you doing?!”

Faith ignored her and directed her attention to Tara. “You see what I can do, Endymion? How even your personal guard have fallen under my spell? If I so wish it, they would fall upon their weapons and give their lives for me.” Her face softened. “But it doesn’t have to be this way. Join me, and I shall spare not only their lives, but those of the Princess and her guardians.”

Tara frowned. The person that had attacked them countless times in the past few months, whose very goal was the enslavement of Earth, was going to spare their lives? It didn’t make any sense. “But you want us dead. You want all of us dead.”

“Perhaps I did, once,” Faith responded cryptically. “But at this moment, whatever can be done in order to ensure my survival takes precedence, even if it means sparing yours for the time being.”

Tara thought it over, and was surprised to find herself in complete agreement with everything that Faith had said. Seeing what had happened to them before in the past had given her something to think about, and the events of the past few minutes had made it all but clear that the only way to ensure Willow’s continued safety was to not be with her.

Turning around to face Willow, she let out a small sigh, then said, “I’m sorry, Willow.”

Willow’s heart leapt upward and lodged in her throat. “Tara, no.”

“It’s the only way to save everyone.”

“Tara, no! We can find another way!”

“There isn’t any, and you know it.”

“But Tara…”

“Think about it, Willow,” Anya cut in. “Would you not do the same in her position?”

“You’re one to talk,” Cordelia muttered. “I don’t see you going up there to sacrifice yourself for the good of the team.”

Tara ignored the exchange as she looked at each of them in turn. “Thank you all for your help. You’ve all been wonderful in ensuring our safety, but this is something I have to do alone.” She turned halfway back to Faith, her hair masking her face, but Willow could definitely see a haunting look of sadness on her face. “Look after Willow, will you? She gets into the most terrible trouble.”

She then turned her back to Willow and the others and headed off towards Faith. She had barely made it two steps when a strangled cry from Angelus caught everyone’s attention.

“No! I won’t allow this!” Starting forward, he brought his weapon up to strike Tara down, only to find himself frozen on the spot as he neared Tara, Faith having brought her arm up to stop him in his tracks. Tara passed by him without a misstep.

Willow was awash with emotion, struggling to figure out what to do. She knew she had to do something, but what that something was eluded her. It wasn’t an issue of numbers; even without Tara’s help, they were nearly even as far as strength goes, but Faith was clearly holding the strings here, and had the power in this situation.

Power…that was always the problem in her life, wasn’t it? Someone else always had the power in her life, and was always tugging her in many different directions. Her mother wanted her to do better in school, Snyder was always being a bully towards her, the cheerleaders were always putting her down, even Luna and Tara, the two persons in her life that wanted to look out for her, always seemed to want her to do things their way instead of what she felt was best.

Everyone was making the decisions for her, and she hated it. It made her angry, but not as angry as she felt at this very moment. She normally had a “walk-away-from-danger” mentality to situations like this, but on some carnal, primal level, she knew she couldn’t allow herself to do that here.

There was only two times in recent memory when she felt the way she did now: when she had her first fight against the enemy, and when she had held the prone form of Tara after Fred had delivered a mortal blow to her. And like those times, she felt a surge of power and strength that gave her the clarity of knowledge to know what she had to do to make sure Tara did not come to harm.

“Stay away from her!”

Devi: I'm glad you appreciated this chapter. I know you watched the show, so I know you know where things are going. And I do want to get it done eventually. It's just that, combined with my new job and school, I haven't had time to get it all down into anything resembling an update.

Hopefully sometime soon I'll get an update up...and hopefully by then there'll be more than one person waiting to read it.

Just wanted to give an update. I haven't forgotten about this story (even if it appears the board has), but work and school and everything else have really been cutting into my time lately. [center]Chapter Seven: The Birth of Princess Sailor Moon[/center]

”You want to do something.”

The question – no, it wasn’t a question at all, but a statement of fact – came at Willow from all direction inside of the white void she found herself in, her only sense that she was not in freefall the feeling of the ground beneath her feet. The voice sounded familiar, and yet she couldn’t put a face to it. Its tone, however, was crystal clear to her; taunting, condescending and petulant. Whoever it was clearly saw great pleasure in taunting her over this issue.

”You want to help her, don’t you?”

“Yes!” Willow shouted into the open air.

”But you can’t.” Again, it was not a question, but a statement of fact. ”You’ve seen what Faith can do. You know what length’s she’ll go to in order to cause us pain. There’s nothing you can do to stop her, and you’ll just end up dead if you try.”

“But I have to try!” Willow insisted. “I just can’t sit here and watch as Tara goes off on her own all trying to be noble!”

”You don’t have to, though. You can save her.”

“How?”

The response to that question came in the sound of falling footsteps, and an approaching body that Willow could see coming towards her. Despite the brightness of the area, the figure was in complete shadow, and it wasn’t until she was mere feet away that she saw who it was, letting out a small gasp as she recognized who it was.

It was herself. Or, to be more accurate, it was Princess Serenity. Whom, after a moments pause, started forward again.

“Let me take control.”

Willow tried to move, but found herself rooted to the spot. As her other self made contact, she arched her back, trying with all of her limited strength to resist the intrusion. To her surprise, she found her resolve weakening in light of what Serenity had said. It was true that she had no idea how to save Tara, and was too weak to do anything. But perhaps with Serenity’s wise and guiding hand, she might be able to do so. She immediately relaxed and let her take control.

The moment she did so, she immediately regretted it. Her will and self control were unceremoniously thrown aside, and replacing them was the greatest concentration of negative emotions she had ever experienced. Anger. Hate. Fury. Resolve. They all ran through her as easily as blood, and they all gave her the power she needed to save Tara.

It was ironic, really, that it would not be her that was to do it.

In her chamber, Metallia slumbered, growing increasingly disgusted by the lack of progress Faith had made towards fully restoring her power. In all honesty, it wouldn’t surprise her in the slightest to find that she was doing this to stall as she plotted to find some way of harnessing her power to her own advantage. It was that determination and willingness to manipulate others that had caused her to seek the woman out and use her as the avatar through which she brought about the Moon Kingdom’s destruction.

It was an attitude that would no doubt ultimately lead to her own end, and Metallia would have no greater pleasure than to bring that about, but it was also an attitude that had led to the incessant squabbling between her and her warriors, and which forced her, at present, to capitulate and, for the time being at least, put her fate in the hands of a untrustworthy individual and her equally treacherous underlings.

”When the Crystal is mine, I will have the power to crush all those who stand in my way,” she mused. ”I will have no further need for Faith or her machinations. I will be free to act on my own, and then she will know what true power…”

Her train of thought came to an end as she felt an enormous rush of power infuse her being. Letting out a roar, she could feel herself gaining strength by the moment. At this rate, it would not be long before whatever it was returned her to full power.

But just as she cusped the edge of that hill, whatever it was that had happened faded, and as it did so, she could feel her power recede slightly. She retained some of what she had gained, but not enough for her liking.

There was only one explanation as to what had happened. This had happened once before, but not to this extent. Unlike now, it had only been a minute development, but its occurrence had coincided with the locating of the Crystal.

”The Crystal. The Princess is using the Crystal!”

Everyone watched in stunned surprise as, following Willow’s bold declaration, she started forward, her body undergoing a startling transformation as she did so, her body becoming engulfed in a bright light. No one was more surprised than Faith, once more angered that ultimate victory had once again been snatched from her grasp. Turning towards the Soldiers, she let out a throaty snarl.

“What’s going on here?”

“We don’t know anymore than you do,” Fred snapped back.

Cordelia turned to Anya. “I’m betting one of us does.” If Anya registered the comment, she showed no sign of it.

Willow came to a stop after walking a few meters, the light that had enveloped her fading as she did so. However, the person that stood there bore only the most superficial similarities to Willow Rosenberg. She was still clad in her Soldier uniform, but it had taken on a more regal appearance, laced with silk and pearls, her tiara now a string of beads with a ruby at the center, and a small crown perched on her head.

It was far from a dress style suitable for a superhero, let alone a teenager. It was, for all intents and purposes, more suitable for a Princess.

“I said stay away from her!”

Tara was now not only unsure about what to do, but what was going on. Faith, noticing her hesitation, looked in her direction. “Endymion, what are you doing?”

“Something’s wrong with Willow,” Tara responded, clearly torn as to what to do. “I have to…”

“You will do nothing!” Faith screamed, turning to the one flanking her. “You four, stop her!”

Raising their weapons, the Shitennou brought them forward, bolts of energy emerging from their tips, all of which were aimed in Willow’s direction. Cordelia noticed, to her surprise, that Willow was utterly unfazed at this.

“Willow!”

Whether Willow heard her or not, Cordelia had no clue. The next moment, the ground erupted in a series of explosions that sent a cloud of dust and smoke into the air. She bit down a choke and tried not to cry, then looked up in surprise as the smoke cleared, revealing Willow standing exactly where she was, looking no worse for wear.

“Willow!” Buffy shouted. Ignoring her, Willow raised her arm, an expression of barely restrained anger on her now pale face as her Moonlight Stick appeared in her hand, only to morph seconds later into a different sort of weapon; a sword with a sterling sliver blade and a pink grip upon which was inset a very familiar jewel.

“The Crystal,” Faith breathed.

Willow brought the sword up and drew a pentagram in the air, rearing back as she was finished and, with the precision and skill of a professional baseball player, used the sword to send the collected energy towards the group, knocking them all off balance.

Faith, clearly having had enough of this, raised her hands, and from them erupted a spectacular destructive force of energy she knew would be enough to finish off the girl. She was thus equal parts surprised and fearful when her attack was effortlessly deflected aside, causing more damage to the surrounding Earth and sending more gravel and dirt into the air. Her distress and concern more evident now than it had been before, she turned once more to Tara. “Endymion, put a stop to this now!”

Tara allowed herself a brief smile; despite her growing concern about Willow’s well being, she had to admit that she was in control of the situation, and seeing Faith clearly distressed and losing her temper was bringing a sort of perverse pleasure to her. “Why should I?”

Faith’s smile, which had dropped from her face, returned with a vengeance as she raised her hand. “Because she’s not the only one I can harm.”

Tara followed her arm and watched in surprise as Oz brought his weapon down, blade pointed towards his chest. Her surprise soon turned to horror when, as quick as a blink, he impaled himself on the sword and collapsed to the ground. She soon noticed that everyone in the immediate area showed signs of surprise and shock at the act, even Faith herself, which was the second thing she didn’t expect to see.

The first was Willow’s total lack of reaction, which soon became something to be concerned about. In all the time that she had known the redhead, Tara had never known her to be anything but emotional about everything that happened to her, even the most ridiculous and silly of things. She recalled vividly the time when Willow had told her about the time she had broken a yellow crayon in kindergarten, and spent the whole of the following weekend locked in her room crying.

Willow was a vibrant and emotional person. And that was not who she was now. And that someone needed to be stopped. A single life, even if it was an enemy, was too much to pay for her safety. She started back towards Willow, noticing her mood improving as she got closer. Then, as they were mere meters apart, let out a startled yelp as Willow embraced her and delivered a passionate kiss.

As she parted, Tara found a smile on her lips. “Oh, Endymion. I’ve missed you so much. Now stand aside, and let me deal with these ones.”

Tara swallowed. “No.”

This was clearly not the response Willow was expecting. “What?”

“Willow…Princess, you need to stop this.”

Willow’s demeanour immediately told Tara that she had no understanding of what she had just been told. “Why should I?”

“Because…because people are going to die if you don’t,” Tara responded.

Willow tilted her head, clearly failing to grasp that most simple of concepts. “The only people who are going to get hurt are those who keep you from me.”

“And what then?” Tara found herself asking. “Once you’ve finished with them, who are you going to go after? Some mugger who tries to rob me in the streets? Someone who makes me stay overtime at work? Even your friends?” She knew what she was saying was painful, but it needed to be said. “Princess, what you’re doing is wrong. If you have to go to such lengths in order to protect me, I’d rather go willingly with them. Please, let me do this to protect you.”

Willow’s face broke out into a pained expression at those words. “Is that what you want?”

“It’s not about what I…”

“Is that what you want?!”

Tara stood firm, realizing now how similar what was taking place here was to what had taken place on the Moon so long ago; and having seen how badly things had turned out afterward, she was determined to do the right thing now.

“Yes.”

“Listen to her! It’s the only way to save us all!”

“But I can save her. I have the power to rid ourselves of all who stand in the way of our happiness.”

“Yes, but you heard what she said. Do you really think that, after you do that, she’s going to want to stay with us? I’ve known Tara for a long time. She would never condone what it is that you’re doing, even if it was to save her life. If you do this, you’ll lose her forever.”

”I’ll also lose her forever if I do nothing. Have you thought about that?”

“Of course I have. That’s why I’m going to do something about this. Let them take Tara, and let me have control again. Then, I’ll figure out a way to get her back, hopefully without having to go all goth emo scary again. It’s not a good look for me.”

Willow let go of Tara’s hands and took a step backward. As she did so, the blonde smiled faintly, glad to see that reason and sanity had taken hold of her. A split second later, Faith’s howling laughter pierced the silence.

“You fools. You think you may have won now, but in the end, it all comes down to who has the power. With Endymion in my possession, I now hold the power over the Princess. She won’t dare try to stop us now.” She snapped her fingers, and in the next instant she, Tara and the Shitennou were gone.

Willow stood where she was, staring off into space at the point where Tara had been, her face wracked with pain and guilt, her body beginning to glow, reverting to her civilian form. A moment after that, she collapsed to the ground.

“Willow!” The others rushed to her aid, hoping that she was alright. As she moved to pick the fallen redhead up, Cordelia looked back towards Anya, who hadn’t moved to help her fallen leader. The look on her face was blank and impassive. Slowly, she turned and walked away.

“Why?!” Cordelia found herself shouting to her back. “Why did you do it?! Is this because of the past, too?!” Anya continued to move, apparently unfazed by her words.

“TALK TO ME, GODDAMNIT!”

At that, Anya finally paused, and Cordelia, for a fleeting moment, found herself wondering, nay, praying that she would turn around and try to explain why she had done what she had done. She would even have accepted some sort of cryptic comment designed not to tell the whole truth, just as long as it meant that she was truly affected by what had happened.

But just as quickly as she stopped, she started off again, and did not look back.

And Cordelia Chase, finding herself without the two most important people in her life, began to wail.

I cant remember if I have left feedback for this before. If not, sorry. I never cared much for Sailormoon but you changed my mind. I really like the idea and I think it works really well.
Great update as well. I wonder how they will get Tara back and how they will eventually defeat the "dark force". Also, I think Anya, Cordy & Fred need to have a talk. Keep it up!

WillowRulez: Yeah, I feel that this story's great strength is the fact that it takes itself seriously like the live action show, unlike the anime. I've got some ideas on how to take things forward, but unfortunately, no time to write them down. (Of course, I'd probably be able to find the time if I got more than one person leaving feedback in the month since an update...)

Anyways, thanks for taking a chance with the story, and hopefully I'll have something for you soon. :)

Chapter Eight, the final chapter of this story, is now complete. Half of it has already been beta'ed, and I just sent the other half off. If all goes well, the story should be updated tomorrow. :)

[center]Chapter Eight: Through the Looking Glass[/center]

Tara was led through the labyrinthine caverns and shoved through the door of her cell so fast that she had little time to either take in her surroundings or give any thought to what had happened. Once she had been shoved inside her new home, and after falling to the floor after she tripped over her own feet, she had the perfect opportunity to think things through.

The first thing she thought of was about how, for a prison cell, her current location was surprisingly opulent, with a Queen sized bed adorned with drapes in the center of the room, windows with exquisitely designed curtains off to one side, and a dressing suite with wardrobe and makeup table against the far wall. It was a place more suited for a five star hotel than a dark and dingy fortress cave.

The second was the unmistakable feeling that she was being watched. She got to her feet, but didn’t turn around. She knew that there was only one person here who would come to see her.

“That was a very foolish thing to do,” Spike said, stepping around her and entering her field of vision.

“It had to be done.”

“You saw how the Princess behaved. You should have let us deal with her.”

“You mean let her deal with her. There was no way I was going to let Faith harm Willow…or you.” Tara said this more forcefully, and she began to wonder who it was she was trying to convince by saying this. “In any case, Willow won’t go to those lengths again. I know her.”

“You know nothing.”

Tara was beginning to get frustrated, and crossed her arms over her chest, boring a hole straight into Spike’s face. “Then enlighten me.”

Spike looked back at Tara, his gaze intense and his stance defiant. “The Princess has awakened now. And she won’t stop until she has you in her arms once more, even if it means all those that stand in her way must suffer.”

Tara’s mood immediately grew reflective, recalling her vision of what had happened to the Moon Kingdom during its last days. It had been her hope that, by walking willingly into the enemy’s hands, she could have prevented all of this from happening again. But instead of doing that, did she open the door to once again bringing a world full of innocent people to their destruction?

She was about to respond when the door swung open violently and Angelus entered the room and, without breaking stride, backhanded Tara across the face, sending her to the floor. Spike was in his face in moments.

”What are you doing?!”

“What you obviously haven’t the stomach to do,” was the response offered as Angelus unsheathed his sword, pointing its tip at Tara’s throat as she got to her knees, brushing aside a few stray strands of hair. “This is your fault.”

Tara stared at the blade, knowing that even the slightest movement from the hand that wielded it would end her life. To her credit, although she feared for her life, she didn’t allow that fear to show on her face. “I know.”

“You should die for that.”

Tara looked towards the floor. “I probably should.” She felt the steel on her throat disappear and closed her eyes, prepared for the worst.

“Hey!”

Tara opened her eyes and looked towards the open doorway, recognizing that voice immediately and hoping that, despite what had happened earlier, she was seeing things, but she wasn’t.

“You were told not to harm her,” Harmony said, hands on her hips and glaring at Angelus as if he were a six year old with his hand caught in a cookie jar. “Faith wants her alive so that she can continue to torment her friends.”

“I don’t care what Faith wants,” Angelus growled back in response. “And I care less for what you want, creature. You may have been cast off from her genetic form, but you aren’t her, so you should stop behaving as if you are. I cannot harm Faith, but that won’t stop me from harming you.”

Harmony pouted, a look that surprised Tara, as it was something she would have expected to see from a teenager who had just been told that she couldn’t go shopping at the mall. “You’re not really nice, you know. I would have thought that you’d like me a whole lot more, considering it was you who had the idea for my creation in the first place. Wouldn’t that make us like, brothers, or something?”

Tara looked towards Angelus, and caught the unabashed look of anger on his face. Then, in a swift movement that happened so fast that she nearly missed it, he sheathed his sword and stormed out of the room, Spike following behind him after casting his glance back down towards Tara. After they had left, she got back to her feet and moved to sit down on the bed, trying to make sense of all that had just happened. Things were looking pretty bad, and it didn’t help that the most problematic situation was one that had been under her nose the entire time.

The shifting weight of the bed told her that problem was now sitting beside her, and she turned to look at Harmony, finding a smile plastered wide across the latter’s face. If she didn’t know better, Tara would have sworn that she was trying to come on to her. She fidgeted slightly, uncomfortable at the sudden closeness.

“It won’t work, you know.”

Tara stiffened. “What?”

“Your attempts to resist us,” Harmony explained. “You may have done so for a while, but Metallia is growing stronger every day. And when she’s at full strength, she’ll scour the Earth clean, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

“Willow will find a way,” Tara responded with full conviction. “She has friends that will stand by her no matter what happens.”

“Really?” Harmony asked, her voice sugary enough for Tara to nearly throw up at hearing it. “Well, you know as well as I do that they were never on the best of terms back before that incident at Christmas.” Her grin widened and became lecherous. “And now that you’re out of the way, they’ll be at each other’s throats again. And guess who's going to take advantage of the situation to drive them apart, leaving poor widdle Princess Willow all by herself?”

Harmony let out a squeal and jumped off the bed, skipping out of the room without bothering to wait for Tara’s response. She wouldn’t have gotten it, at any rate.

Tara was too busy trying to stop the tears she felt at her hopelessness from showing on her face.

Harmony walked down the corridor, the spring in her step causing her to start skipping and jump slightly into the air every so often. She was happy. Endymion was in pain, and she knew that it was partially due to the fact that she now knew that someone close to Willow was an enemy and was now in a position to cruelly break her heart, among other body parts.

It had given her great pleasure to do that. It was, after all, the reason for her existence. Yes, she knew that she was little more than a portion of Faith’s essence and soul given a mind and form of its own and sent out to cause chaos, but she was doing something that she loved. And Faith had given her a free hand in that, as well. As long as she embarrassed Willow and caused her pain, how she did it was her own business.

Faith should therefore be happy that she had scored a major victory against her enemies, and she entered the throne room ready to show her pleasure. “Hey, boss. That was a great plan you managed to come up with. Maybe now with her girlfriend out of the way, we can get back to work reviving Metallia without any interference. It’s really bad about that guy you had to kill, but you can make an egg without breaking some omelettes…wait a minute, that’s not right…”

It was then, through the psychic link they shared, that Harmony felt the sadness coming off of Faith. This really confused her; she had just scored a major victory against her enemies, so why wasn’t she happy about it? “Boss, you OK?”

If Faith heard her, she gave no outward sign of it, continuing to stare off into space as her head rested on her hand, the shoulder of that arm leaning hard against one of the throne’s armrests. Harmony didn’t know what was going on, but was determined to make Faith feel better. “You want me to throw you a party, or something? I can probably scrounge up some food and streamers, and I can probably get a cake if you give me some time…”

Harmony’s tirade ended in a squelched squeal as Faith’s arm shot out, blue electric bolts flying from her fingertips to strike the rock above Harmony’s head, sending dirt, dust and pebbles down on her. She ducked to avoid the worst of it and looked back at Faith, finding the latter’s eyes boring daggers back at her.

“Go. Now. Before I decide your continued worth to me isn’t worth your ceaseless prattling.”

Harmony scrambled to her feet, the anger from Faith that she felt telling her that she wasn’t kidding. “Sure, boss. Sure.” She left the throne room as fast as she could, still feeling Faith’s emotional state. After a few moments, though, the anger dissipated and was soon replaced by an emotion that felt strange to her.

Doubt.

“I’m really glad you girls came over,” Sheila said as she led Buffy, Cordelia and Fred to the living room. “I’m not quite sure what’s gotten into Willow lately. I’m hoping that you can help break her out of her funk. It’s been my understanding that being around friends can improve one’s mood.”

”You have no idea,” Buffy thought as she settled down on the couch, the others moving to join her as Sheila went off to the kitchen. Not wanting to tip their hand and reveal more than they knew, she said aloud, “What do you mean? What’s wrong with Willow?”

Returning with a tray of cookies and cups of hot chocolate, Sheila answered, “Her grades have been slipping again. I was so proud to learn she had been doing better in school, but it looks like she’s been falling back into old patterns. She’s also starting to find even the things that brought her pleasure a chore. I can’t even get her to come out of her room unless it’s for school, meals or to go to the washroom.”

The girls looked at one another, knowing that Sheila’s words were speaking of a problem that she couldn’t even begin to comprehend. It was true that ever since losing Tara and turning into an all powerful version of herself, Willow had become a bit more withdrawn, but they didn’t think it had gotten this bad.

“Can I ask you girls a question?” Sheila asked. When she didn’t get a response to the negative, she leaned closer and whispered in their direction. “Has Willow been doing drugs?”

Cordelia, who had picked up a cup of hot chocolate and taken a sip, choked on the contents and let some slip from her mouth. In between coughs, she asked, “Excuse me?”

Sheila cast her eyes to the mess on the carpet, then back towards Cordelia. “It’s a proven fact that all of the symptoms Willow is exhibiting are experienced by those suffering from depression, and depression is a common symptom of habitual drug users. Since you’re her friends, I was hoping you could tell me all about what she’s been up to lately. I’ve tried to contact that girlfriend of hers, but she hasn’t returned my calls. I’m not surprised, really. She’s probably too busy painting the landscape or growing some flowers or communing with nature or some other odd lesbian ritual…”

The phone rang then, and Sheila got up and moved back towards the kitchen. The girls visibly relaxed at her departure, then noticed Luna sitting at the top of the stairs, head tilting towards Willow’s room.

Entering Willow’s room, Cordelia and the others saw Willow’s body collapsed on the bed, head buried in the pillow. Luna, in human form, stood over her, tenderly brushing her hair.

“She’s been like this for days,” she explained to the others. “I’m starting to get worried.”

“You’re not the only one,” Cordelia explained. “What’s the deal with that…that…that ‘superwoman’ form she took?”

“It’s the Princess part of her personality,” Luna explained. “I was afraid that this would happen, but I hoped that we could deal with the enemy before it did. But now that she’s awakened fully, we may have a more troublesome problem to deal with.”

“What do you mean?” Fred explained. “I mean, I don’ want to sound selfish, but y’all saw how she behaved when she turned into…that. All she wanted was to stop the bad guys. That’s all we’ve been trying to do, right? If we send her after them, we’ll have them defeated without a problem.”

“That is the problem, though,” Luna clarified. “Willow isn’t the Princess, and the Princess isn’t Willow. Willow knows that you’re her friends and that you love her, but to the Princess, you’re just a distraction; an impediment. She won’t make any distinction between friend and foe when it comes to her love for Endymion. To her, anyone who stands in her way is an enemy,”

“Even us?” Buffy asked.

“Especially us.”

“Guys,” Willow’s muffled voice spoke up then, drained of her usual perky enthusiasm. “Would you please stop talking about me as if I wasn’t here?”

Luna looked down at Willow as the redhead turned over to look at the group. “I’m sorry, Willow. It’s just…we just want to look out for you and make sure you’re OK.”

“Yeah,” Buffy added. “That’s why Anya isn’t here.” Hearing the name of their former comrade, Cordelia flinched, and Buffy turned towards her, apologetic. “Sorry.”

“You don’t understand, guys,” Willow said, looking at each of them in turn. “Things are never going to be OK for me. Tara’s gone off and gotten herself captured by the enemy, and we can’t do a thing about it. I thought that we could, but…there’s no way we can do it…no way I can do it…unless I turn back into the Princess.”

“So what’s the problem?” Fred asked, clearing not seeing any sort of conflict. “You can let her control you again…”

“NO!” Willow shouted. “I won’t do that. I won’t sacrifice who I am now just so who I was can be with Tara. Tara loves me because I’m gentle, kind and compassionate. And when I’m the Princess, I feel…cold, heartless, and capable of doing great harm to anyone, even my friends. I’m…I’m ashamed.”

“Why?” Fred asked.

“During the fight, when I let the Princess take control, I was still capable of understanding what was going on around me. I could watch helplessly as Faith killed one of her own soldiers. And you know what? I enjoyed seeing it. I took pleasure in seeing someone take another’s life. That’s not me. That’s not who Tara sees when she looks at me.” Willow turned over and started to cry. “I can’t believe I lost her.”

“We’ll find a way to get her back,” Luna said, seeing that Willow was getting distressed about the situation, and needing to comfort her in some way, even if it was a pithy gesture. “We’ll do all that we can to help rescue her.”

Willow turned over, her expression clearly set in her ‘serious/resolve’ look. “Good. Because I don’t want to anymore.”

Luna’s eyes widened. “What?”

“You heard me,” Willow said, reaching up, taking off her transformation brooch and throwing it across the room, clattering on the floor near her wastebasket. “I quit. I’m done being the leader. Find someone else to take the job.” She turned over and buried her face in her pillow again, her body language making it clear that the conversation was over.

Luna turned towards the others, her expression sad. “I guess…there’s nothing more to say, really. You better go.”

The group parted after leaving Willow’s house, each of them taking their own paths home. Fred walked down the street, surprised at how she had conducted herself in Willow’s presence, but not at all regretful about what she had said. It was bad enough for the enemy to have taken her and twisted her mind to want to hurt her friends, so with the shoe now on the other foot, why shouldn’t she voice her opinion that now there was a perfectly good opportunity for them to get even.

On the other hand, Willow had been the only one to genuinely care for her when she contemplated taking her life at the end of the ordeal, knowing that it was going to take time for the fences to be mended for the others, and so her desire to help Willow deal with her problem was such that it overrode her own desire to harm the enemy in any way possible.

She did want to do that, to be sure, but not if it cost Willow her life. She had saved her life, and now Fred would try to find a way to save Willow’s.

So absorbed was she in her own thoughts that she had nearly passed the teenage boy leaning against the wall. Pausing for a moment, she turned back and looked at him, seeing the clothes he was dressed in and the sour expression on his face. For a moment, she thought she recognized him, but shook her head in a dismissive manner, thinking that it was just her mind playing tricks, and continued on her way, paying the young man no further attention.

After leaving Willow’s house, Buffy spent a great deal of her time thinking about the current state of affairs in her life, and realizing that, whether she liked it or not, Willow’s safety and well being was her top priority, to the exclusion of everything else. That meant that she would have to sever her connections with everything about her life that gave her some degree of happiness. She let out a sigh, realizing that, once again, she was turning away an opportunity to have her own life.

This time, however, there was a clear difference: she was doing it to save someone whose life and well being mattered to her more than her own. It was with that thought that she found the strength to withdraw her cell phone and punched in Riley’s home phone number. After hearing it ring for several seconds, someone on the other end picked up.

”Hello?”

“Hey, Riley. It’s me.”

”Hey, Buffy. Excited about our date tonight?”

“Actually…I have to cancel.”

”What? How come?”

Buffy paused, unsure as to how to respond. She couldn’t tell him the truth; how would that look? She let out a breath, knowing that her next words were going to be painful not only for her to say, but for him to hear. “I just…I just don’t think we should see each other anymore.”

”Why? If it’s something I did…”

“No, Riley,” Buffy was quick to clarify. “You’re a nice guy, really you are. But…I’ve never really had anyone in my life stick around for very long. My parents…Parker…everyone I’ve come into contact with has left me. And now…well, things in my life have been pretty bad lately, and I have to make a choice. And… I just don’t want to see you get hurt.”

“I’m a grown man, Buffy…”

“I know. That’s why I hope you can accept my decision.”

”But Buffy…”

“Goodbye, Riley.” Buffy cut the connection, then moved to turn off her phone, not wanting to have Riley call back. She then started walking again, and had made it barely two steps before she started to cry.

Cordelia spent the entire time walking home thinking about her place in the grand center of things. It was so much simpler when the thing she had to worry about most was being treated as a freak by her classmates. She had certainly come a long way in that short amount of time, and despite all the hardships she had endured, and the painful sting of betrayal from one she had grown to consider her best friend and mentor, she had come through it a better woman, and wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

She had no reason to believe that things could get any worse. But then entered her house and found her mother standing by the stair case, a letter in hand.

“What’s wrong, mom?” she asked.

“You’d better take a look at this, sweetie,” her mother replied, handing her the letter. Cordelia took it and began to read.

It’s come to our attention that you have been delinquent on your back taxes for the past five years. As such, we have been forced to repossess your house and all of your valuables in order to pay back the balance. Foreclosure procedure against the home will begin immediately. You have five days to vacate the premises.

Cordelia felt a lump in her throat. This couldn’t be happening. In the space of five seconds, she had gone from having everything to losing it all. “Mom…what does this mean?”

“We’re broke, sweetie,” her mother responded, her eyes wet with unshed tears. “We have nothing left to our name. Your father’s at the tax office trying to sort things out, but I’m afraid it’s not looking too great. I’ve been on the phone with my parents, and they’ve agreed to take us in until we can get back on our feet.”

“Grandma and Grampa?” Cordelia asked, shaking her head slightly, still in shock over the whole state of affairs. They lived in San Diego, which was as far out of the way as you could get. More importantly, it was away from Willow, at whose side she needed to be now more than ever. “Move away? Mom...no. I can’t move away. I…I have friends here. I…I have a destiny to be here.”

It surprised her to say this; for the longest time she had been adamant about avoiding her destiny, but now with Anya’s betrayal and Willow’s problem on top of the omnipresent spectre of the Dark Kingdom, she knew that she had to be here to keep the team together.

She wasn’t the only one shocked to hear this. ”Destiny? What are you talking about, honey?”

“Nothing, mom,” Cordelia hastily answered, hoping to avoid answering any embarrassing questions. “I…I just don’t want to move away.”

“I’m afraid we have no choice, sweetie. We’ll have to leave by the end of the week.” Her mother turned and headed back up the stairs. “Pack some of your things, sweetie, but try to choose some of your less expensive clothes.”

Cordelia stood dumbfounded, unable to believe what was happening. In such a short amount of time, her whole world had been rocked to its very foundations. And it was ironic that the only person she could go to for comfort was herself dealing with a crisis that she herself felt compelled to deal with more than her own.

She made her way to her room and looked at all of her prized possessions, soon to be taken away from her. Suddenly, she let out a wail and flopped on her bed, letting out a sobbing series of cries.

Luna’s feline form stood on Willow’s windowsill later that night, looking towards the sky and seeing the full moon in the air. She had been glad that it was a full moon this night, as it would allow her to make contact with the computer that maintained and projected Queen Serenity’s hologram at the ruined Moon Palace. The Queen often sought her and Artemis’ counsel in times of need, but had always said that she would give them advice should they need it. Now was one of those times.

“Please, Queen Serenity,” she whispered. “Hear my voice. I am in need of your counsel.”

A beam of light shot through the open window, striking the locket Tara had given Willow dead center. A small representation of Serenity’s form appeared on top of it, her expression concerned. “Luna, what is wrong? I sense great trouble.”

“It’s worse than that, Your Majesty,” Luna explained. “Willow has…she’s given up the will to fight.”

Serenity’s expression grew understanding, realizing what must have happened for that to have occured. “The Princess side of her personality. It has awakened, hasn’t it?”

“I’m afraid so.”

Serenity did not appear too upset at this news. If anything, she took it in stride. “Perhaps it was a bit naïve of me to think that this day would never come. I had hoped them to find happiness in this life, but perhaps not even here are they destined for true peace.”

“I don’t believe that,” Luna said defiantly, leaping off the windowsill and moving towards the table upon which the locket rested. “And neither do you. If you did, you never would have sent them here in the first place.”

Serenity nodded. “That’s true.”

“But it’s worse than we feared. Endymion has been captured by the enemy. And Willow has…she’s given up. She doesn’t want to be Sailor Moon anymore.”

“I’m not surprised,” Serenity said. “I’ve kept track of my daughter since she was reincarnated, and she’s always had a kind soul. Perhaps it was not a good idea to show her how she had once been; I had believed that would not have made a difference, but it appears to have done the exact opposite.”

“Is there anything we can do to help her?” Luna asked.

“Yes, but I am reluctant to do so.”

“How come?”

“Because it would involve showing her…what things may be had you not found her. And that could make her worse than she is now. I do not wish to knowingly bring more harm to her. In her current state, she could be scarred for life.”

“But it might be necessary for her to know,” Luna said. “Knowing how bad things might have been had I not found her might give her the strength to face the problems she is dealing with now. Things couldn’t be that worse, could they?”

Serenity sighed, reluctant to enact what Luna intended, but, knowing as she did, that there was no other way. “I suppose not. Very well, Luna. I hope you’re right.” Serenity’s form faded, and the light moved to envelop Willow. The intensity of the light grew brighter, yet Willow made no move to wake or show any sign that she was bothered at all with the light. After a few moments, the light faded, her form disappearing along with it.

Luna looked upon the spot where Willow had laid. “Good luck, Willow.”

Willow slowly awakened to find that she was no longer on her bed, that she was instead lying in the middle of the road. Common sense overrode any questions she had about how she had gotten there, and she got to her feet immediately.

And she immediately wished she hadn’t, for she found the street upon which she rested, along with most of the surrounding area, an uninhabitable wasteland; windows were broken or boarded up for the most part, others showing clear signs of looting. The sky was a deep crimson red, punctuated only by dark clouds that hung in the air like birds-of-prey stalking a dead animal carcass. Sirens could be heard in the distance, broken occasionally by the odd strike of thunder.

More horribly, she recognized it as one of Sunnydale’s many streets, not far from the high school.

This was her home. But it was also…not.

Only one thought occurred to her at that very moment.

”Where am I? What happened?”

It had been her hope that, by walking willingly into the enemy’s hands, she could have prevented all of this from happening again.

I still think what Tara did was wrong. Necessary for the stoy maybe but still wrong :D
Sheila was dead on hehe. Very canon but who likes a nice Sheila :P? I always wondered if the relationship between Willow and Sheila changed on the show, e.g. when Xander tells Will in Forever that he has been visiting Sheila and she has too.
"And when I’m the Princess, I feel…cold, heartless, and capable of doing great harm to anyone, even my friends. I’m…I’m ashamed.”

Well, that's not good. Willow is too compassionate for that.
Also like how you integrated Cordy's family problems from the show into this story.

It may be wrong, but that's where the source material went, so I have to follow it. Of course, that doesn't mean I don't branch out, but I have to stay to the core story.

Yeah, at the end of this story, our girls pretty much got put through a lot, not only by the enemy, but by Darth Real Life. Thankfully, all will right itself in the end.

Well, yes and no. It is the end of this particular story. It is not, however, the end of the series in general. I've been plugging away at writing the next story, but it's coming along slowly. As soon as I can get it done and beta'ed, it'll get posted.

[center]Chapter One: What Do We Do Now?[/center]

Six Hours Earlier

“I’d really like to know what it was you were thinking when you decided to betray your friends.”

Standing on the floor in front of the chair Anya was sitting in, Artemis looked up at her with an expression of disappointment. To be honest, Anya could understand why, but that didn’t mean she had to take that accusation lying down. “I didn’t betray them. I was…doing what needed to be done.”

“I can understand why you would want to do that,” Artemis sympathized, though some of the edge in his voice remained. “But what did you hope to avoid by going over to the enemy?”

Anya let out a sigh and looked out the window. “What’s already happened; prevent the Princess from awakening.” She turned her gaze back to Artemis. “You know what she was like. And now with Tara gone, it’s only going to get worse. If Willow loses control of her new power, the Princess will wake up again, and nothing will stop her from getting what she wants.” A continuation of her retort was halted by a wave of dizziness, and she brought her hand up and shut her eyes, trying to stop her sudden feelings of nausea.

Artemis leapt up onto the table beside the chair, concern for his charge’s welfare rising. “It’s getting worse, isn’t it?”

“Not a lot of time left for me,” came the reply. “I went to the Doctor after…the battle. He says my condition’s getting worse, no doubt due to the stress and overexertion I’m putting myself under. He says I’m likely to be dead inside the month if I don’t stop.”

“Then maybe you should.”

Anya looked towards Artemis, surprised that the one who had trained her, her guardian and, for lack of a better term, best friend, could have said that. Of all the people she had expected that sort of thing from, he was the absolute last. “What?”

“You’ve done enough to help the others understand the dangers of what they face and get them prepared to deal with it. You don’t have to keep going on like this. Take some time to rest, savour what time you have left and let the weight of the world fall on the shoulders of someone else.”

Anya got up and turned to look at Artemis. “How can you say that? How…how can you even think that? I can’t just go on the sidelines and leave my friends alone, especially now.” Her dizziness came back then, and she moved to sit back down. “In any case, who really cares if I work myself to death? After what’s happened, I doubt anyone would really care if I just upped and died tomorrow.”

A pregnant silence followed, broken a few moments later by Artemis’ whispered, “I would.”

Anya’s eyebrows raised in surprise as she turned around to look at the feline. “What?”

Artemis cleared his throat. “Anya, I’ve been by your side for a long time, and I’d like to think that we’ve come to know each other as more than partners. I’d like to think that we’re…friends. But I only know you as Sailor Venus, the Soldier of Love and Beauty, leader of the Sailor Soldiers, guardians of Princess Serenity. I’d…I’d like to know Anya Jenkins a little better. What’s her favourite color? What did she want to be when she was growing up?”

Anya smiled, moving to wipe away the tears that were running down her cheek, and gave Artemis a good rub on the head, coming to a decision right then and there. “I’m…I think I’m going to have that operation I told Cordelia about. I owe it to the others…especially Cordelia.”

Thinking of her brunette companion gave her pause to think of how she had treated her during their last battle. At the time, she hadn’t cared enough to feel anything about breaking her heart. Now, of course, she felt differently. They had bonded so much, and she had to try to fix that bridge before it collapsed.

And, if nothing else, Anya was a fighter. She moved to pick up her cell phone, then paused, realizing that she had no reason to believe that Cordelia would have held onto her own. So, after grabbing the phone book from underneath the coffee table and looking through it for her house phone number, she dialled it instead. After two rings, she got the following message.

”I’m sorry. You’re number cannot be completed as dialled.”

Twelve Hours Later

Cordelia ran though the open field, the folds of her expensive dress billowing in the breeze behind her. The freshness of the air penetrated her lungs, making her steps as light and bouncy as her elaborately done up hair. She fell to the ground and giggled like a schoolgirl, rolling along the grass, enjoying the simple pleasure it brought to her.

“Cordy!”

The voice was followed by a thunderclap that shattered the cheerful sunny day around Cordelia into a thousand shards of tinkling glass, causing her to slip into a freefall towards a bottomless pit of darkness. She opened her mouth to scream, but no sound emerged.

“Sweetie, are you awake?”

“Sweetie, are you awake?”

Cordelia’s eyes fluttered open as she bolted upright, the sheets of her bed wrapped around herself and, much like her pyjamas, covered in cold sweat. It had obviously been a terrible nightmare she had just went through, until she recalled her current state of affairs and realized two things: her nightmare was very real, and her experience of it was far from over.

“Sweetie, are you OK?”

Cordelia swallowed, trying to calm her jackhammer beating heart, and responded to the voice. “Come in, Mom.”

The door opened, and her mother walked into the room. “Are you OK, sweetheart?”

“I’m fine, Mom,” she lied in response, apparently not as convincingly as she had hoped, as her mother crossed her arms over her chest, and gave her a knowing stare. Deflated, she let out a sigh. “OK, I’m not.”

“I know, sweetie,” her mother replied. “It’s hard for all of us.” A faint smile appeared on her face. “I have to admit, however, that I’m impressed at how well you’re handling the situation. There was a time when you would have thrown a temper tantrum at the slightest provocation unless you got your way. Now you’re looking at the situation around you and dealing with it like a strong young woman would.” She sniffled, and Cordelia could see repressed tears in her eyes. “I’m so proud of you, honey.” Without another word, she got up and walked out of the room.

Cordelia sat on the bed for a few seconds, contemplated what she had just been told. Her life had indeed taken a great deal of twists and turns; a member of Sunnydale’s elite, yet treated like a pariah because of her supposed visions, then learning that said visions were a part of her former life; a superhero with a destiny she had once wanted no part of, but now had a strong conviction towards. The life of her best friend was in danger; in comparison, any problems she might have seemed pitiful by comparison.

Fighting back the urge to cry, she got up, moved to pick up her bathrobe, and headed for the washroom.

“So you broke up?”

“I had to. It…it was the right decision.”

“Forgive me, Buffy, but if you were as confident about that as you say you are, you wouldn’t be here to see me, would you?”

“I...I guess not, Mr. Wood.”

Buffy sat across from Robin Wood, the school’s counsellor, giving away her nervousness by randomly crisscrossing her legs. The events of the past day had gnawed away at her, and she had an overwhelming urge to talk to someone about it. Seeing as though the only person she could talk to in these particular circumstances, however, was someone likely to declare her crazy, she felt she had to embellish the truth slightly.

“Why not?”

Buffy fidgeted. “I don’t know. I mean, I like Riley a whole lot. I really do. But…anytime I get a little happiness in my life, it gets taken away from me.”

“And you feel that if you stay with this guy, you’ll lose him through means you can’t control?”

Buffy nodded in agreement. “Sounds silly, I know.”

Robin shrugged. “I don’t know. Sounds more like a teenage girl in love.” He leaned forward to pick up his coffee mug. “And to be honest, I can’t really help you out with that.”

“How come?” Buffy asked, her voice crossing the border from disappointed to whiny without ever coming close to sad.

Robin smiled. “Because when it comes to love, there are no easy answers.”

”I can fight evil monsters and save the world, but I can’t handle being in love?”

Buffy left the office with that question on her mind, the building starting to fill up with her fellow students as the bell signalled the start of a new school day. As she moved to go to her homeroom, she felt a hand on her shoulder. On reflex, she slammed her elbow into the person’s stomach.

“Ow!”

Buffy spun around to face her assailant to find Amy bent over backward, her books on the floor and her arm over her stomach. Instantly apologetic, Buffy quickly moved to help Amy catch her breath and pick up her dropped schoolwork.

“Sorry.”

Amy let out a pained cough in response, catching her breath in order to give a short “It’s OK” in reply. Handing over her Math book, Buffy asked, “So…what’s up, Amy?”

“I…I wanted to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“Willow.”

“What about her?”

Amy shifted uncomfortably on one foot, and Buffy immediately detected a change in the air around her. If she didn’t know any better, she could have sworn that Amy was becoming…confrontational.

“Well, you’ve hung around her a lot lately, and since she doesn’t really talk to me anymore, I have no way of finding out if there’s anything wrong with her. I’d go to her mother, but I suppose I’d have better luck trying to talk to her bedroom wall. In any case, I wanted to ask if you noticed anything…strange about her.”

Buffy hesitated, not entirely sure how to respond to the question. She did indeed know more about the situation than she really wanted to let on, but didn’t think it was a good idea to actually discuss it in present company. On the other hand, Amy was clearly concerned about her best friend, especially since it was obvious how much they had drifted apart, and was clearly not going to leave her alone unless she got an answer.

“Yeah,” she replied. “I have.”

Amy glared at Buffy, her change in attitude now readily apparent. “So what have you done about it?”

Even though she had been expecting it, the tone of voice in which the accusation had been flung at her caught her off guard. “Excuse me?”

Amy glared daggers at Buffy. “Ever since you got here, Willow’s been acting all strangely; staying out all night, lying about where she’s been, becoming moody and depressed for no reason, and treating her real friends like the crap she would scrape off her shoe. And while I’ve been trying to figure out what’s been going on, you’ve known this whole time, and chose to…I don’t know, play cheerleader and screw around with your boyfriend?”

Already on edge with Amy, Buffy felt her self control go when Riley was mentioned. And despite knowing full well that, with a history as sordid as hers, she could likely get expelled for what she was about to do, she couldn’t let Amy get away with treating her like that. Thankfully, a new voice interjected, saving her the trouble.

“Leave her alone!”

Buffy turned to see Fred standing behind her, hands on her hips and with an expression she had not seen on her face since her brief time as Dark Mercury. “I mean it, Amy. Leave Buffy alone. She’s done nothing to you.”

Amy was clearly not impressed by Fred’s attempt to stand up for Buffy. “Back off, brainie. I don’t know why Willow would want to hang around with her, but it’s obvious where she got her bad attitude. And being around you obviously didn’t better. Now she thinks she’s smarter than the rest of us, and doesn’t feel it worth her time to hang around with the intellectually challenged.” It was clear that Amy still had some fight in her, but it was equally clear to her that she was outnumbered, so she gathered up her wits and walked off without another word.

Letting out a sigh of relief, Buffy turned and headed towards Fred, visibly thankful that the embarrassing incident that was about to happen had been avoided. “Thanks.”

The pair headed off to class, but stopped next to the doorway. “Have you heard from Willow?” Fred asked.

“Not since last night,” Buffy admitted. “I got the impression that she didn’t want to be disturbed, so after we brought her home, I just headed home myself. You?”

“Likewise,” Fred answered, looking into the classroom, then back towards Buffy. “So how come she’s not here?”

Buffy likewise stuck her head inside the classroom, failing to find Willow seated at any of the desks. “What? Where is she?”

Fred pulled Buffy away from the door and dragged her down the hallway away from the classroom. “I don’t know, but I have a bad feeling about this.”

“You don’t think…that Faith got her too, do you?” Buffy asked.

“I don’t know,” Fred said after a moment’s hesitation. “I don’t think any of us would be here now if she did.”

“But that doesn’t make it easier to answer the question about where she is right now,” Buffy pointed out.

“She’s probably at home still,” Fred conjectured. “She probably convinced her mother to phone the school and say she was sick. I wouldn’t blame her, really.”

“We should go check on her,” Buffy suggested. Fred’s eyes widened at that. “What?”

“I mean…we should cut class.”

“Again?”

“Why not? It worked before, didn’t it?”

“Yeah, but that was because we had outside help. I don’t think we can get away with it now.”

“How come?”

“Because you’ve had the lack of smarts to announce doing so in front of a teacher.”

Buffy and Fred spun around to find Miss Calendar standing behind them, the expression on her face one of utter disappointment. “I expected better from the two of you.” She shifted her attention to Fred. “Especially you, Miss Burkle. You were once one of my best students. But lately your work’s been slipping, not to mention that period where you displayed very serious antisocial behaviours.”

“But Miss Calendar…”

Miss Calendar raised her hand. “Please, Elizabeth. You’re already in enough trouble as it is. Don’t make things worse for yourself. You’re both to have detention with me after class. Be thankful I don’t report this to Principal Snyder. Now get to class.”

Buffy and Fred visibly deflated at that, knowing that they had been defeated. Following Miss Calendar back to the classroom, they moved to sit down at their desks, resigned to the fact that, while their concern for Willow was still evident, at least she was likely to be in a better position than they were.

Hmm. I'm not sure how much I can give away about this plot point. Let's just say that, if you're aware of what happens in the last few Acts of PGSM (the version of the Sailor Moon story this fic series is influenced by), you already know the answer.

Jenny calling Buffy Elizabeth... hilarious.


Not particularly. I've read fics where Buffy was called Elizabeth (and I've read somewhere that Buffy is a nickname for Elizabeth), so I figured that, given the situation, it would make more sense for those in authority to refer to her by her real name than a nickname.

When are we gonna see Tara again?


Chapter Three. This story is going to be set in two different worlds (the "real" world and what I like to refer to as "the Wishverse", the alternate reality Willow found herself in at the end of the last story) and the chapters will follow the pattern of showing what's going on in those two areas. So Chapters 1, 3, 5 and so on will be set in the "real" world, while Chapters 2, 4, 6 and so on will be in the "Wishverse".

Chapter 2, BTW, should be up soon. Some last minute tinkering needs to be done on it.

[center]Chapter Two: I Don’t Think We’re In Sunnydale Anymore[/center]

Willow wandered down the deserted street, the only sound aside from the random flashes of thunder and lightening and the blowing wind being her own footfalls. Every time the thunder cracked, she flinched, sudden loud noises in a nearly silent environment doing little to calm her down. At least she managed to find humor in the fact that the situation made her recall a snippet of information she had recalled her psychology teacher say as a joke. It was offbeat, but she had to admit that it was also amusing. It was also her only means of maintaining calm in a situation rapidly losing any semblance of a credible reason for her to do so.

Walking up to an abandoned house, her steps began to falter. Something in the back of her mind was telling her not to go inside, lest she find herself in danger. Then she recalled than in this strange backwards world, danger was around every corner. And in any case, she had faced down much worse horrors in the past few months in her role as Sailor Moon. Nothing in that house could frighten her.

That belief was immediately shattered upon seeing the carnage evident inside the house. No. That wasn’t correct. “Carnage” didn’t even begin to describe how to describe the scene she saw inside.

The entryway was strewn with dead bodies in various poses and states of decomposition, all of them expressing on their faces extreme fear and terror; the entire group quite literally scared to death. At the far end of the room, Willow recognized someone. Eyes widening, she made her way over to the body as quickly and carefully as she could and knelt down beside the young woman’s glazed eyes.

“Oh, Amy,” she said, moving to close her eyes. “What happened to you? What happened to all of you?”

A bloodcurdling cackle filled the room, almost in response to the question. Willow followed it to the backyard of the house, looking up at the sundeck attached to the house’s second floor to find a familiar figure perched upon it like a vulture.

“Buffy?”

Buffy cocked her head at the question. “Look at the little birdie bird. Making noise, but no one home to hear you.”

Willow’s heart began to beat faster in proportion to her growing fear. “Buffy, what are you talking about? What’s going on?”

In response to her query, Buffy leaped off the railing to the ground, shoulder rolling towards Willow as she did so and, in one fluid motion, delivered a roundhouse kick to Willow’s head, sending her flying through the air into the fence nearby. The rotted wood broke instantly, causing the redhead’s body to fly into the next yard.

Willow brought herself to her feet in time to see Buffy step through the hole in the fence, a lecherous grin on her face. At this point, Willow was way past worry and into full blown wig mode.

“Stupid little chickie, crawling out of your nest all by yourself.”

Any sort of response from Willow was stymied by the sound of an approaching car and, several seconds later, a series of gunshots. Willow turned towards the commotion, then turned back to find Buffy leaping over the fence on the opposite side of the yard and take off at a sprinting run down the street. Her strength failed her then, and she lapsed into unconsciousness.

“Is she alright?”

“She’s lucid. We should be grateful for that. We’re lucky to have found her before any serious harm could have come to her.”

“We’re glad that Jupiter didn’t have the chance to do her any permanent harm. She was always the most hotheaded of us.”

Willow was aware of the conversation, she couldn't put faces to the voices. It concerned her, however, that they were talking about the Sailor Soldiers openly, and referring to Buffy by her Soldier name. Hadn’t Luna made it clear to them the importance of keeping their lives as Soldiers a secret from anyone who might use that knowledge inappropriately?

She opened her eyes to find herself on a stretcher, hooked up to some makeshift medical equipment that beeped in slow steady rhythms, clearly showing her status as among the living, even if her body clearly didn’t feel the same way.

“She’s awake.”

Willow quickly found herself besieged by a trio of individuals: a mid twenties balding African American male, a slightly younger male in doctor’s scrubs and a mid thirties woman with all the standard police attachments, who was, at this very moment staring down at her with thinly disguised anger.

“You’re lucky to be alive, Willow,” the female said. “You should have known better than to wander out beyond our protective shield.” Willow’s silence clearly annoyed her. “I can’t believe how foolish you were.”

“Calm down, Kate,” the African American said. “No harm was done. We got Willow back safe and sound, and Jenny’s already reinforced our mystical barrier. There’s no chance of an attack now. Everything’s worked out all right in the end.

Kate’s expression didn’t falter, and she moved to leave the room. “She still should have known better.”

The African American watched her leave, then turned to his companion. “OK, Ben. Help me get her up.”

The pair unhooked Willow from the machine and helped her to her feet. After Ben left to deal with the other patients in the room, the African American took Willow’s hand. “You had us all worried, Willow. I might not agree with Kate’s attitude, but she does have a point. You never should have gone out on your own.”

Willow was clearly flustered, and had no qualms about making it known. “What do you mean? What’s going on here? Who are you?”

The man’s expression softened slightly. “Jupiter must have roughened you up more than we thought.” He held out his other hand. “Charles Gunn.”

Willow took the offered hand and shook it. “So…what’s going on here? Where are we?”

Gunn’s expression darkened. “You really don’t have any idea, Willow?”

Willow shook her head, and Gunn led her out of the room and onto a gangplank overlooking a vast cavern, filled with a large assortment of people; most of them were malnourished and in poor health. Those few who appeared relatively healthy still bore marks of being part of a conflict, from deep wounds to missing limbs.

And mingling among them…no, it couldn’t be.

Willow was surprised to find four older women among the injured, walking among them distributing food, medicine and good wishes. All four of them wore the uniform of the Sailor Soldiers; one an ethereal thin woman holding a forked staff with a skirt and bow in purple and boots trimmed in black, another an well muscled African American with short dark hair holding the arm of a platinum blonde and who appeared to be their leader, a woman whose uniform, like her hair, was trimmed in dark green. She was holding an ornate staff with a gem at the top, which Willow could feel was giving off tremendous power, but at the same time causing the strength of the woman who wielded it to sag every so often, resorting to using it as a walking stick.

Though Willow did not know the others, it was this one she recognized immediately. “Miss Calendar?”

“Say hello, Willow,” Gunn’s voice came from behind her. “Say hello to the last of humanity.”

The rain began to come down as she had left, but Buffy didn’t let it bother her. Few things did since her change. One of them was failure. The Empress did not enjoy failure in her subjects, especially those in whom she had placed a great deal of her trust. And in a court composed of a majority of backstabbers seeking to attain and maintain their level of standing by any means necessary, the Empress favored her most of all for her honesty and brutality.

She soon arrived at the fortress that the Dark Kingdom had made in the town of Sunnydale shortly after the Empress had made her escape from her imprisonment, a large part of the city walled off with its nucleus the remains of the former high school. Many of the creatures she passed along the way had once been human, their humanity and souls burned away and now twisted into the motley army serving the Empress in all things.

Making her way to the Empress’ throne room, she tried to calm her nerves, not wanting to appear flustered in the presence of her mistress. Arriving in the room, she saw a number of her leader’s chosen warriors in conference. And on the throne at the end of the room, the powerful figure of Metallia, Queen of the Dark Kingdom and Empress of Earth.

She brought her head up and smiled faintly. “Ah, Elizabeth. How nice of you to return to us. I trust your mission was a success?”

“Not…exactly.”

The warriors discussing their business fell silent, and Metallia got to her feet, her hand extended towards Buffy. An invisible hand closed around her throat as the words left them. Metallia’s face, once kind and pleasant, had now twisted into a snarling rage, made more fearful by the whiteness of her skin and the deadness of her eyes, eyes which now shone a dark crimson. “I tell you, Elizabeth. If you have allowed that coven to join the insurgency…”

“No, my lady,” Buffy choked out. “The coven has been slaughtered. But..”

Metallia lowered her hand, and Buffy found herself hitting the floor. “But?”

Buffy gasped for air, and then described in detail to Metallia her encounter with Willow, and by the time she had finished, the demon queen was incensed. “And you, the most ruthless of you converts, you, who pride yourself a huntress without equal, allowed yourself to run in fear from these people? You could not defeat a simple group of rabble infesting our great kingdom like a cancer?”

Buffy stammered for an explanation. “I…I thought the advantages of retreat were more advantageous. There is an opportunity to re-evaluate and reorganize…”

Buffy’s words came to a half as Metallia once again raised her hand, only this time blue arcs of lightning emerged form her fingertips, coursing all over the small blonde’s body. She howled in pain. “Please…my lady! Have pity!”

“Pity?” Metallia spat, her face clouded in anger. “Pity is for the weak, my dear Elizabeth. Pity is for the emotionally crippled.” She continued her assault, failing to relent in her attack. Buffy’s howls soon slipped to sharp cries, then to moans, then to whimpers and finally, she fell silent, her body twitching in reflex as the last of the lightning played over her now charred body.

“You are both, and I am neither.”

Lowering her arm, she turned to those discussing matters some distance away. “Let that be a lesson to you. I do not tolerate failure in my men. By the next sunset, the insurgency will fall, or you will all join her.” She moved to sit down on her throne, all pretense of continuing the discussion over.

“Leave me now. And take that with you.”

[center]Chapter Three: Revelations[/center]

It was ironic, Cordelia realized, for her to be finding solace from her woes in the company of the one person in the universe she trusted the least. But despite everything that had happened, Anya was the only one she felt comfortable talking to. She couldn’t risk going to Willow about this, since she had her own problems to deal with at the moment, and the last thing she really wanted was to overburden her best friend. What led her to the decision to go to Anya instead? She didn’t really know, though it might have something to do with the fact that, like with Willow, she had developed a bond with her over the past few months, and it was a testament to that bond that she was here now; friendship truly was something that transcended all barriers.

“And that’s pretty much it,” she finished. “We’re going to have to move away.”

Anya entered the living room and put a plate of cookies down on the coffee table. “I’m…I don’t know what to say. I want to say that I’m sorry, but…”

“It wouldn’t seem right?” Cordelia offered, picking up one of the cookies and taking a bite out of it, only to realize that the snack had most likely been in the cupboard since both of them had been in diapers. Politely, she forced herself to finish the morsel she had eaten and took a sip from her drink.

Anya, noting her discomfort, said, “Cordelia, look, I…”

“Don’t,” Cordelia interjected. “I don’t really want to hear any excuses about why you did what you did. I’m sure you have one; otherwise you never would have done what you did. I…I just don’t think I want to hear it, you know?”

The pair sat in silence for a few moments after that, neither of them wanting to talk after that. Anya was the first to break the silence.

“I’m going.”

Cordelia looked up. “What?”

Anya swallowed. “I’m…I’m going to have that surgery I told you about to cure my…condition.”

Cordelia wanted to be happy at hearing that, but all she could think to do at that moment was ask, “Why? What made you change your mind?”

“You did.”

Cordelia turned to find Artemis coming into the room. He made his way over to her and leapt onto the table beside her. “She may not have behaved like she did, but she genuinely cares for all of you, especially you. Seeing how you’ve handled the responsibility put upon you, it makes her very proud. She wanted to thank you by…by doing the one thing that can make sure you can get to know one another better. You know, after we’ve dealt with the enemy.”

Cordelia fought back the urge to cry as she looked back at Anya. “I…I know you’ve tried your best. And I know I haven’t been a very good student.”

“Nor I, a great teacher,” Anya admitted. “But I’m willing to make an effort to change that.” She closed her eyes and brought a hand to her forehead, heaving a deep sigh as she did so.

“Are you OK?” Cordelia asked, worry starting to bubble in the pit of her stomach.

“Yeah,” Anya replied. “The headaches happen more often now.” She inhaled sharply, and let it out. “But I’ll be OK, now.”

Cordelia smiled, allowing herself to forget about all of her troubles for the moment and take some comfort in this. ”Yeah. Everything will be fine.”

“This sucks.”

Fred had to admit it; Buffy did indeed have a talent of boiling down her responses to incredibly complex situations in simple, matter-of-fact expressions. Still, if there was one thing that they could both agree on, it’s that things could have been a lot worse than what they were currently suffering through; Miss Calendar had said that she wouldn’t inform either their parents (or, in Buffy’s case, the school board) nor Principal Snyder of their actions, meaning that all they had to do was pass the time quietly and not make a scene out of themselves, then they could go and check on Willow. No harm, no foul.

Miss Calendar entered the classroom them, carrying her notebook, which she set down at the desk as she looked towards the two students in her classroom. “Well, I suppose you both know why it is that you’re here.”

“Yes, Miss Calendar,” Fred said in response to her question that wasn’t a question. “We’re here because you overheard us talking about skipping class.”

“And we promise not to do it again,” Buffy added in a tone of voice that make it ambiguous as to whether or not she planned to keep that promise.

A faint smile appeared on Miss Calendar’s face. “Oh, I wouldn’t say that, Jupiter. You had the right idea, of course. Your mistake was announcing it as casually as you did. You should have done so in a more circuitous way, much like Mars had done when she snuck you all away to check on Venus. I must say, that little stunt did impress me.”

Buffy nodded absently, then perked her eyebrows up as the enormity of what Miss Calendar had just said registered with her. “Say what now?”

Fred, equally shocked, stuttered, “How…how did you know about…”

“The Soldier of Time knows all, Mercury,” Miss Calendar replied, the smile on her face growing wider. She stood up straight and affixed a battle stance.

“Pluto Star Power Makeup.”

Before the stunned eyes of Fred and Buffy, Miss Calendar began to change, her form enveloped in a stunning black light that faded after a few moments to show her garbed in the uniform of a Sailor Soldier, her uniform trimmed in black and dark green, a blood red jewel inset into her bow; her once short cropped brunette hair now reached down to her waist and was tinged green. She held in her right hand an ornate looking staff, upon which was fixed a sparkling purple jewel.

It took a few moments for Fred and Buffy to recover the power of speech. “Miss…Miss Calendar?”

“I am Jennifer LaMorte Calendar,” the figure intoned, her voice softer and yet, at the same time, containing a power which held back unimaginable power. “Much as you are Winifred Burkle, and you Elizabeth Summers. But as you, Fred, are Sailor Mercury, Soldier of Water and Intelligence, and as you, Elizabeth, are Sailor Jupiter, Soldier of Thunder and Courage, I am also Sailor Pluto, Soldier of Change, Guardian of Space and Time, Past, Present and Future.”

“Future?” Buffy asked. “So...what? You know what’s going to happen to all of us?”

“I do.”

“And…whether or not we’re going to defeat the enemy?”

“Yes.”

“So…” Fred hesitated, not really wanting to ask that question, but knowing that the answer was too important to keep secret. “Do we?” The pause that followed that gave her room to wonder whether or not she was correct to ask. Pluto’s expression darkening didn’t help much, either.

“The future is never fixed, Mercury. Many are the directions the tide can take, affected by even the slightest of ripples. Nevertheless, it does not bode well for the Earth. Its guardian has been captured by the forces of darkness. And her one true love, crippled in mind and spirit, cannot muster the strength to go on. I fear the last days of the Earth are truly coming to pass.”

“We won’t let it happen,” Buffy said with firm conviction. “Me and Fred and Cordy, we’ll stand together and face whatever we have to in order to get Tara back to Willow and stop the evil bad guys once and for all.”

“What about Venus?” Pluto asked innocently. “Of all of you, she has the most experience in combat and dedication to your cause.”

“We’re not talking to her anymore,” Fred said. “She betrayed us to the enemy. We can’t…trust her anymore.”

Pluto looked at Fred. “You betrayed them, as well.”

Fred sulked. “What about it?”

“You performed evil acts in their name against the Princess and your friends. And despite that, the Princess looked into your spirit and found the pure heart that you had, cloaked as it was by the powers of the enemy. She forgave you and saved your life, bringing you back to those who love you, and made them realize that it was not your fault. Can you not do the same for her?”

Fred was struck speechless by that, and Buffy quickly moved to intercede. “Look…Miss Calendar or…Sailor Pluto…or whatever it is you want to call yourself, this is different. She was coerced and manipulated into helping the enemy. Anya chose to do it out of her own free will.”

“I see,” Pluto stated. “So if this is how you feel, why is Mars with her at the hospital right now? Did she not choose to do this as well ‘out of her own free will’?”

“She what?” Buffy asked. “Why would she do that?”

The black light re-enveloped Pluto, transforming her back to Miss Calendar. “Perhaps she saw the pure heart in Venus though the blackness engulfing her soul. People have the chance to change, my friends. But you must give them a chance to do so.” She picked up her notebook. “But come. Let us go and collect our wayward companions.”

“And then what?” Buffy asked.

“And then…you shall learn your destiny.”

Cordelia sat in the waiting room of the hospital, looking down the corridor that the nurse had escorted Anya down a few moments earlier. Look at her as she had walked, head held high and stance straight, it spoke volumes about her courage. Not that she had any doubt about that, but going to the doctor, especially to take part in an operation that she knew to be as life threatening as the disease which she hoped to cure, was enough to scare even the toughest of individuals.

”I couldn’t do that,” she thought. ”I still get nauseous at the sight of blood, and I squirm when I find wasps in the backyard. I know I’ve done a lot in the past few months, but…” She shook her head, realizing that no matter how hard you tried to be brave, life always managed to find ways to throw you curveballs. And, in some ways, she would always be a scared little girl.

It gave her reason to re-evaluate her life. Not twenty four hours ago, she had seen her entire world come crashing down around her. It frightened her. But here she was, bravely heading on. Yes, she had lost much of who she was, but it made her realize, and appreciate even more, what she still had.

She looked up to see a trio of figures approaching her. Two of them she recognized instantly. She got up and went over to them, giving them each a hug. “Buffy, Fred. Hi. I’m so glad you came, but how did you find out I was here?” She then turned to the stranger. “And who’s this?”

Buffy and Fred exchanged glances. “That’s going to be a little difficult to explain out here in the open. Think we can go to the Secret Base and discuss it there?”

Cordelia tensed up at the question, realizing that Buffy was talking about Soldier business in front of a complete stranger, a definite no-no as Luna had so often drilled into them. But the older woman did not appear to be concerned at all. And it quickly became obvious that the person, whoever she was, was also aware of what was going on, so the question as to whether or not to bluff her way out of the situation was moot.

“I’d love to,” she finally said, choosing to be diplomatic. “I want to stay and give…well, to give our friend some moral support.”

“Venus will be fine, Mars,” the stranger replied. “But I have much to say in a short amount of time. We must hurry.”

”Well, that did it.” “What the…”

“As I said,” Buffy interrupted. “It’s a long story. And maybe we should have it somewhere else?”

Cordelia nodded and walked back to pick up her things. “All right, then. Let’s go.”

Tara sat on the foot of the bed, hands gripping the sheets at her side in an increasingly difficult attempt to keep herself from wrapping them around the neck of the room’s other occupant, whose singular goal at the moment appeared to be using any means necessary to drive her insane. She wasn’t a violent person by nature, but even this was enough to test her limits.

“Razorbacks, Razorbacks, sis, boom, bah! Razorbacks, Razorbacks, rah, rah, rah! Razorbacks, Razorbacks, see the light! Razorbacks, Razorbacks, fight, fight, fight!”

Harmony, dressed in a cheerleader’s uniform that left very little to the imagination, was doing an elaborately choreographed dance routine, which served little purpose other than to annoy her, a belief immediately proven by the irritated look she gave at Tara’s lack of a meaningful response. “Oh, come on! I can’t be that bad!” When that also yielded a lack of response, she sighed, throwing the pompoms she held down. “Well, that sucked. What else am I supposed to do for fun around here?”

“Maybe you should go ask your…” Tara paused, unsure how to refer to Faith, who was, in a biological sense, if not a literal one, Harmony’s mother. “…your leader.”

“I would,” Harmony replied, moving to sit down on the bed. “But she’s been really moody lately.”

“Moody?” Tara asked, her curiosity getting the better of her.

“Oh, yeah,” Harmony replied offhandedly. “She used to be all about taking over the world and harming your girlfriend and her friends, but that’s all stop after you guys fought one on one, when she released the whizzbang special effects on us. I think she may be having second thoughts.”

“Second thoughts?”

“Yeah,” Harmony admitted. “And I gotta say, it’s starting to be a real drag. I mean, I don’t feel what she feels, but I do get impressions from her, and it’s starting to get sick how often I feel guilty and paranoid. I mean, I’m evil. I should be thinking about the best way to blow things up, not whether or not it’s worth it…” She trailed off, remembering where she was. “And it’s not like that matters to you, since you’re not going to be leaving here, no way. The rest of this crew may be going to the peanut factory, but as long as I’m around, you’re still my favourite plaything, and I’m not going to throw you away just yet.” She left the room without another word.

Tara flopped backward onto the bed, letting out a small laugh at the thought of Harmony attempting to be evil. It was hard to believe that she could pull it off. The image of her attempting to pull off a fight entered her mind then, and she laughed a little bit, wondering how it was possible that Harmony could have been cast off from the dark side of Faith’s mind.

The sober reality of that soon brought her back down to reality, and made her realize that Faith’s change in demeanour was the perfect chance for her to effect an escape, if she could only figure out how. Maybe she could reach out to her former guardians; Spike had expressed in interest in helping her, though whether or not that was still true was unknown at present. Angelus was definitely out of the question; his attitude towards her was such that, had it not been for Harmony, she would have been dead within hours of her arrival. And Xander…well, she was recovering memories of her past life with each passing hour, and though she remembered him as being loyal to her, it was clearly obvious that his loyalty was to Faith, no doubt due to the enchantments she had placed upon him. Or maybe it was because he was a young adult, one so easily swayed by Faith’s charms that it made him blind to all else.

In any event, she had to find a way to get through to them and get them to help her escape back to Willow before she did something terrible. There were weaknesses in any well built fortress, it was just a matter of time of finding out where they were.

”You seem troubled, Faith.”

Faith, on one knee in Metallia’s chamber, raised her head to look at the Demon Queen. “I am.”

“Why?”

Faith tried to get the words out of her mouth, knowing as she did how unnatural they sounded. “Since the confrontation with the Princess, I have begun to grow…concerned.” It pained her to admit this, but there was no way she could deny it. Her carefully crafted plan to take control over Metallia’s power by means of the Silver Crystal had crumbled around her, and seeing the Princess wield its awesome energies in battle gave her little hope that any attempt to wrest control of it away from her could be attempted.

And then there was this influx of energy that Metallia had been given at roughly the same time. Was it possible that the powers of the Crystal, when used by the Princess, were strengthening the Demon Queen at a pace that would soon make her superfluous?

That last question was somewhat answered when Metallia’s inhuman laughter filled the room. ”Do not despair, Faith. Once I have regained my full strength, I shall deal with the Princess in my own way. And then no one will stand in my way.”

Faith shuddered at that. So it was true. The Mystical Silver Crystal was now in sync with Metallia’s life force. The more the Princess used it, the stronger Metallia would become, and soon it would get to the point when she would grow so strong that she would simply wipe away everything in her path, including her.

”I must stop her,”she thought. ”I have to find a way to stop her. I MUST find a way to stop her!

“But how?”

Not particularly. I've read fics where Buffy was called Elizabeth.

I know that it is a nickname but still. In that moment it was funny to see it.
Gunn! Cool. I always thought he didnt get enough credit on Angel.
Am glad that Cordy and Anya are trying to reconcile.
So I guess Faith might help them bring Metallia down?

WillowRulez: Sorry for the late reply. Suffice it to say, I have no excuse. Yes, things are picking up in the story, and I do have ideas on how to continue, but the problem is that I need to find the time to put them down to paper. I actually started reading this story on Uber WT and I only recently started reading stuff in Pens. But I for one think your story is great, probably because im bias. I loved sailor moon :blush

BentBrokenTheory: Sorry for the late reply. Darth Real Life got me by the you-know-where for the last few months, so I haven't been able to really write or anything.

Thankfully, one of the major distractions in my life, namely school, is over, so I've finally been able to find time to write. I've already started working on the long overdue next chapter, and hope to have it up and running soon. :)

Hey, everybody. Wow. It's been nearly a year since I last posted in this thread. Don't worry, folks. I haven't forgotten about this story. I do have a chapter more or less written, but I haven't been able to find the time to type it out.

In the meantime, I'm wondering how many readers are interested in hearing what went into creating the story? Well, if anyone is interested, I can type out my story notes and post them.
