Chemistry

Chapter 4

“Sam!” Willow squeaked, her eyes wide. “You’re here! Why wouldn’t you be here, because you’re here sometimes. And it’s a public place, so of course you could be here. So that’s why you’re here. And, and… This is Tara!” Willow looked from Samantha to Tara, silently praying that this wasn’t happening. An awkward silence settled over the group before Willow continued her explanation. “Um, Tara was my uncle’s friend. He, um, left me a farm and I sold it to Tara, because I mean with all the horses and everything, I just couldn’t take care of a farm. But Tara loves horses. She’s a horse trainer, but, uh, she was gone for the past year…” Willow trailed off, unable to keep the hurt out of her voice. She took a deep breath and turned to Tara with the intention of introducing Sam, but could not manage to produce a sound. She studied Tara, trying to read the feelings passing over the blonde’s face, but failed miserably.

Tara turned her eyes towards Willow and the two women stood, gazing at each other wordlessly. In Tara’s eyes, Willow saw an emotion that she couldn’t place and that made her heart miss a beat, but in the next second the emotion was gone, hidden beneath the blank look that replaced it. Finally, a voice broke the deafening silence. “Hi. I’m Sam, and from my girlfriend’s incessant babbling, I gather you’re Tara?”

Tara winced slightly when she heard Sam articulate her worst fear. She had been clinging to a last miniscule shred of hope that this woman was not Willow’s girlfriend. The fact confirmed, Tara nodded her head and tried to speak, but couldn’t seem to produce any sounds. After several moments of panicking that perhaps she had gone mute, Tara’s vocal cords decided to cooperate. “Y-y-yes. It’s n-n-nice to m-meet y-you.” Tara inwardly berated herself for letting her stutter become so pronounced. She had wanted to appear confident and collected, but the stammer made her anxiety all the more obvious.

Goddess Tara. Could you be a little more pathetic? Alright, all I have to do is tell Willow it was nice to see her and then make a quick escape.

“Would you like to sit with us?” Sam asked politely.

Guess not. Tara looked back towards Nate, pleading with her eyes for an excuse, any excuse to get them out of there. He walked to the table and put his arm around her shoulder, giving her silent support.

“Your boyfriend can sit with us too,” Sam said, after seeing Nate walk up.

Tara couldn’t help it. The tension she had been experiencing in Willow’s presence dissipated immediately with a hearty laugh. She looked at Nate and saw him in a similar state. They locked eyes and laughed harder, tears running down both of their faces. Finally, stomach muscles stopped clenching and the two friends took gasping breaths. Tara turned towards the rest of the group and saw three very confused faces staring back at her. “Erm, sorry about that. He’s definitely not my boyfriend. I, um, It was just funny, the thought of me with a guy.’” She gave the group a half smile and rubbed her stomach, trying to stop the pain permeating through her muscles. Tara glanced at Willow’s face for a moment and was confused by the look she saw. Oddly enough, it looked like Willow was gleeful. But why would Willow have been happy that she was a lesbian? Before she had time to process the thought, a loud beeping sounded.

“Oh, crap,” Sam said loudly. She took a beeper off of her belt and read the message on the screen. “It’s an emergency. They’ve got about ten people coming in with severe injuries. I really have to go.” She turned to Willow and gave her a small frown. Sam didn’t know why, but she felt uneasy about leaving Willow with Tara. It was something in Willow’s eyes, but a small uneasy feeling wasn’t going to keep Sam from her job. “I’m sorry, but I have to be there. Apparently, some of them have severe neck wounds...”

“That’s ok!” Willow interrupted loudly. “I mean, you should go if you have to go. And people with neck wounds, that’s just bad.”

Tara couldn’t help but give an internal jump for joy now that Sam was leaving. Tara knew that she didn’t have Willow and she would never break up a relationship, but she loved spending time with the red-head all the same, and Sam’s presence had constantly reminded Tara that Willow was not hers. Sam gave everyone a wave. She smiled at Willow and gave her a small kiss on the cheek. “I’ll call you tomorrow.” She glanced back to Willow and Tara when she got to the door. Tara sat down next to Willow at Willow’s urging. The two smiled at each other. Sam left for the hospital, choosing not to look back.

Willow couldn’t stop looking at Tara. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, seeing as Tara was inarguably beautiful, but every time she looked at Tara she felt like she was cheating on Sam. Willow didn’t have a reason for why she felt this way, only that she did. Using every ounce of personal strength she had, Willow ripped her eyes away from the blonde goddess before her to observe the newest member of the group. He was tall, had dark brown hair and a handsome face. She cheered internally that Tara was not with this man, or any man for that matter. Her eyes kept moving until they landed on Buffy. Her friend had an interested look on her face. Whether the interest was in this man or Willow’s situation, the red-head had no clue. She gave Buffy a questioning glance but was ignored as the petite blonde rose from her chair and instead looked at Nate. She laid her hand on the man’s shoulder and turned her eyes towards the dance floor. Nate smiled brightly and nodded his head, following Buffy towards the floor. And then, Tara and Willow were alone.

--------------

Tara smiled shyly at Willow and the red-head returned the smile. For several moments, neither woman spoke. The silence was comfortable and unnerving at the same time. “How have you been?” both women asked simultaneously. Tara giggled softly and Willow’s smile grew. Willow nodded her head at Tara, indicating that the blonde should answer first.

“I’ve being doing ok. I got back last week, so it’s b-been sort of hectic, getting back into the swing of things.”

“Um, how was your trip?” Willow asked hesitantly. Ideally, she hoped Tara’s answer would be something along the lines of her trip being horrible, and how the entire time she had thought about and yearned for Willow. Tara’s actual answer was nothing like this.

“It went very well. The horse I trained actually took first place in several races.” Oh, and by the way, the entire time all I could think about was you and how much I wanted to be with you. “W-what about you? I-I mean, how l-long have y-you and S-S-Sam been together?” Once again, Tara cursed her stutter for betraying her innermost feelings.

Willow did not want to talk about this with Tara, but it would have been rude to brush off the question, though there was nothing wrong with jumping off the topic quickly. “About six months now. Do you want a drink?” Willow congratulated herself on her subtlety and looked at Tara with expectant eyes. Tara shook her head yes, desperate for any way to dull the pain she was feeling. It would have been one thing for Willow to have been with someone when they first met, but knowing that they met while she was gone just made the hurt worse.

Willow vacated her chair and walked quickly to the bar. Buffy had brought her a drink earlier, but she had downed it hastily right after Sam had shown up. She ordered two drinks from the bartender and walked back to the table, admiring Tara the entire way. She sat down and handed the other drink to Tara, their fingertips brushing briefly. Willow inhaled sharply and took her hand away. She took a gulp of her drink and tried to breathe deeply to calm herself.

Willow chanced a look at Tara to see the blonde regarding her with curious eyes. Tara’s eyes widened slightly as Willow stared back. She broke the gaze and considered her own drink. Tara was never one for alcohol, but as they say, desperate times called for desperate measures. She tipped her head back and downed half of the liquid in one gulp. The world seemed to spin slightly as she drank, but it soon righted itself. She continued to take smaller sips of her drink until the glass was almost empty. Her head felt warm and she could feel herself becoming more relaxed. She chuckled slightly, the alcohol having the desired effect. Tara looked over at Willow and saw that the red-head’s glass was in a similar state. The two women glanced at each other and giggled. As if reading Willow’s mind, Tara left the table and returned with two more drinks. There was a small nagging voice in the back of Tara’s mind telling her that she shouldn’t be drinking so much, but the voice seemed to lessen with each sip. Finally the voice disappeared as both Tara and Willow finished their drinks.

While drinking, both women had carried on small polite conversation. Now, with the drinks consumed, they were silent. Willow tried to look anywhere but at Tara. Those alluring blue eyes seemed to capture her heart every time she made contact with them. Willow scanned the dance floor and her gaze rested upon Nate and Buffy. They were still dancing and seemed to be carrying on a conversation. She averted her gaze as both Buffy and Nate turned to look at her. What are they talking about, Willow wondered.

--------------

Buffy and Nate had disappeared from the group as soon as Sam had left. They both had sensed the tension emanating from Willow and Tara and had decided that, being the respective best friends, it was their duty to leave and talk about it. Of course, all of this was done through the subtle communication of nods and winks. The conversation had started slowly, with both friends dancing around the subject. Buffy had asked Nate about Tara’s trip, and Nate had asked Buffy about Willow’s job. Finally, Nate bit the bullet. “Alright, anything we talk about stays between us, right?” Buffy nodded emphatically. She was excited that they were about to delve deep into their friends lives. Nate continued. “She likes her, doesn’t she?”

Buffy smiled and nodded. “I’m not sure if Willow knows the depths of her feelings. I mean, she was heartbroken for a while, but I don’t think she ever fully admitted it to herself. Of course, then she found Samantha…” Buffy said her name quickly, as if uttering it might inexplicably cause the woman to appear right in front of her. And she certainly didn’t want that happening.

“Do you like her? Sam, I mean,” Nate asked, hoping that his question had an answer he liked.

“I don’t know. I guess she’s ok. The thing is Willow barely talks about her to me. I mean, Sam is polite and all, but you’d think that if you loved someone, you would want to talk about them. Willow always wants to brush off the subject. Oddly enough, I think she’s talked to me about Tara more than she ever has about Sam.”

Nate couldn’t hold back the question anymore. It had been trying to escape ever since the conversation had begun, and now it finally spilled out unceremoniously. “What about Tara?”

“Ah, Tara. You mean, why didn’t Willow wait for Tara? Honestly, I can’t tell you. The best I can guess is that Willow couldn’t seem to figure out her feelings, so when she found someone who knew exactly what she wanted, she jumped at the chance. Willow doesn’t like not knowing the answers. But, now that we’re on the subject… how about Tara? Does she like Willow?”

“Wow, what a loaded question that is. Just remember our little disclaimer.” Nate took a deep breath before explaining. “Tara loves her. She figured it out while she was away. But you should know that if Tara had figured it out before she left, she never would have gone.” Buffy nodded. From the way Willow had talked about Tara, she doubted that she could ever cause Willow so much heartbreak on purpose. “Tara was heartbroken too. She told me that she was going to try and find Willow and tell her, though now I don’t know what’s going to happen…” He trailed off, deeply unsure of what Tara was going to do. The object of his best friend’s affections was so close, yet they had never been more distant.

Buffy sighed audibly; also unsure of the path her best friend would take. She knew that Willow had felt strongly about Tara, but that was a year ago. Willow had a girlfriend now, and for all she knew, Willow was in love. Nate and Buffy looked at each other and continued to dance. As one, they turned their heads towards the subjects of the conversation and laughed at what they saw. Both women were visibly trying to look anywhere but the other’s face. They laughed again when they saw Willow stop staring at them and look at Tara. They saw her quirk a small smile and her eyes glazed over slightly. Buffy whispered conspiratorially to Nate, “I keep thinking that at any moment she’s going to let her tongue hang out and howl like a wolf or something.”

She laughed softly again. Nate turned his head to respond. “Well, at least we know that she still likes her.” They both giggled and continued to dance and chat. Nate and Buffy hoped for the best for their friends, but they could do no more. Ultimately, it was not their business whether or not Willow chose to stay with Sam, but both Nate and Buffy knew which decision they were rooting for.

--------------

“Do you want to dance? I mean, because it looks fun out there. And, dancing is fun. And, fun is good.” Willow had been writing and re-writing the question in her mind for the past twenty minutes. That did not go as well as she had planned. The alcohol had definitely helped release some of her trepidation caused by being around Tara, but she couldn’t help but get tongue-tied around the blonde. She gave Tara a brilliant smile, hoping that maybe the gesture would tip the scales in her favor. Little did the red-head know that at that very moment Tara was trying to nonchalantly answer instead of screaming yes at the top of her lungs. The blonde took one look at the smile Willow gave her and decided that her voice could not be trusted. She nodded her head and the two stood up and made their way over to the dance floor.

The band on stage was playing a fast song and the two women started dancing, maintaining a safe distance from one another. Willow wanted nothing more than to close the distance and feel Tara’s body move against her own, but even the alcohol could not convince her that that was a friendly gesture. They moved their bodies to the music and could not help but appreciate the other’s figure. The dance floor was not as crowded as it had been when Tara had first walked in, but the atmosphere was still warm. The minutes passed and soon Willow and Tara were covered in a light sheen. Willow kept sneaking glances at Tara, admiring the way her body moved rhythmically, keeping perfect time with the beat. Suddenly, the rhythm became deliberate and the women found themselves in the midst of a slow song.

Tara’s heart began to beat faster even though she had stopped moving. Her eyes settled on Willow. Tara moved forward slowly, giving Willow a chance to leave the floor if she wanted. Willow could not have moved had she tried. She watched Tara edge forward and then felt the blonde’s warmth slightly as she stood inches away. The music continued to play, soft musical rhythms that seemed to enchant the two women. Willow bridged the gap and placed her hands softly on either side of Tara’s waist. Had she been able to achieve conscious thought, she might have realized that this was not how friends dance. But the notion forever eluded her as she rested her hands on the blonde’s midsection. Tara brought her hands up to Willow’s shoulders and clasped her hands behind her neck.

They swayed gently, moving as one. Willow gazed deeply into Tara’s eyes; she swam in the blue oceans before her. Tara returned the gaze equally, losing herself in the deep green eyes that seemed to appear in every dream. She felt herself moving forwards slightly, until there was nothing but a slight wall of air between her and Willow. She could feel the red-head breathing, could feel the heat from their previous exertions. As one, the two women gravitated towards each other, their lips drawing closer as collectively they leaned in for a kiss. Inches away, a single thought occurred to both simultaneously.

This is wrong.

Willow pulled back, her cheeks reddening when she realized just how close she had been to kissing Tara. She released her grip on Tara’s waist and brought her hands to her side. Tara did the same, unclasping her hands and stepping back, regaining the bubble of personal space that she so desperately wanted to make disappear. Without saying a word to acknowledge what had just happened, Willow and Tara left the dance floor and sat down at the table. Tara looked at her hands in her lap, wondering if they were going to talk about it.

Willow could not face what had almost happened. She chastised herself for what she was about to do, but did not change her decision. “So, how’s the farm?” Very subtle, Willow. Just change the subject entirely and forget that you just tried to kiss Tara.

Although Tara was surprised that the subject had been completely avoided, she wasn’t entirely displeased. She had messed up and allowed herself to get too close to Willow, and Tara would never try to break up a relationship. “The farm is going really great. I m-mean, there’s so much room to train all of the animals, and Sparks is happy to b-be back at home.” Tara smiled thinking of her new home and how happy she was there. An evil smirk graced her lips. “And knowing how you’re so f-fond of them, you’ll be pleased to know that the horses are doing just great.”

Willow laughed heartily and teased Tara back. “Well, they should be doing fine, seeing as they have a hero who saves damsels in distress as their trainer. Almost like a knight in shining armor training them to be the best horses they can be.”

Tara blushed at the compliment and an idea suddenly popped into her head. “Would you like t-to learn how to ride?” Realizing how that may have sounded, she amended her question. “The horses, I mean. You were so sweet, letting me buy David’s house. I would j-just like to repay you for your kindness. And I know that riding horses doesn’t sound like a good payment, but I p-promise if you let me teach you, safety and fun would be the top-most priorities.” She finished speaking and gave Willow a trademark half-smile.

Willow’s heart had jumped into her throat. She could not think of anything much better than seeing Tara again, but the idea of horses made her cringe. One look at Tara’s smile gave the red-head all the courage she needed. “I can’t say I’m excited at the prospect of being around horses, but I guess I should face my fears sometime. Count me in.” Willow smiled dazzlingly and the two women made plans to meet that Saturday for Willow’s first lesson. At that moment, Nate and Buffy finally rejoined the table and sat next to their respective best friends. Nate looked at Tara and asked if she was ready to go. Tara gazed longingly at Willow one last time and then stood up, waving slightly at the two women as she did. Without another word, Tara and Nate left the club and returned to his truck.

“So, how are you doing kid?” Nate asked softly. Tara didn’t answer. She would talk to Nate later, but at the moment she was content to gaze out the window and replay the night in her head. As Nate realized now was not the time to talk, he fell silent and drove home.

--------------

“Will, you doing alright?” Buffy asked in a very similar manner to Nate. Willow shook her head slowly and regarded Buffy with large green eyes. The emotions running through Willow were too confusing and plentiful for conversation. She quietly asked Buffy if they could go home and the petite blonde obliged willingly. Buffy knew that eventually the talk would come, but right now Willow needed to think everything over. She could patiently wait until Willow was ready. They left the club and drove home silently.

--------------

Willow and Tara drifted off to sleep that night as one moment played repeatedly in their minds. Both women pressed against each other, inches of air separating their lips. The picture did not dissipate with sleep, and instead replayed in their dreams. However, unlike reality, their dreams allowed the kiss to happen.

--------------

I can't make any promises on when the update will happen, given that school is starting this week. But I can promise it won't be too horribly long. Hope everyone enjoyed the update! :peace

dibs ya were going for a ride (very naughty thinking here) well its time for Sam to hit the door cause Tara is here to save the day. I like the fact that even though Tara is in love with Willow she won,t break up anybody so Willow need to wake up and see what is right in front of her.

Hey, yay, another update!

Wow, how awkward with Sam showing up, but good timing for all the neck wound victims showing up and her getting called away. (Actually, great timing.)

I could just feel the tension between the girls, then the dancing escalating their emotions. I gotta admit, I'm glad they stopped before they did something they would regret. They need to get a little something (someone) taken care of before they can move forward. I'm thinking the riding lessons is a great step toward that, and Willow needs to have an honest conversation with Sam, although I think Sam knows what's coming.

Liked the Buffy/Nate best friend conversation too.

Can't wait to see what's next.

I really enjoyed this update, though I can't seem to feel any sympathy for Sam. I guess I'm just a bad person but I see her as an interloper and think she needs to go away. The sooner the better! ;-)

No sympathy for Sam from me, nosiree.
She is just, and I must applaud highlandlass25 for her use of the word, an interloper.
Sam was just having delusions of grandeur and wanted what none of us who dream can ever have, the love of Willow as that will always belong to Tara and hers to Willow.
That dance was a very intimate and passionate moment and I feel voyeuristic, but in a good way, for having seen it.

i feel sorry for Sam...it's not her fault that she's Willow's g/f. she's probably a good woman that doesn't deserve to be dumped and have her heart broken.

of course Willow belongs with Tara....but there's no need to hurt people in the process. i hope Sam finds herself another woman she belongs with....ok, this post is becoming too sappy.

i'm still loving this story. keep up the good job

Well, on this update I'm relatively happy with Tara and Sam's behavior but everyone else? Kind of need to get bonked on the head. Tara: she's alright because she shouldn't want to break up another relationship. Sam: she's alright because she doesn't even know the whole W/T thing. Willow: she's ok at the moment but basically she should go, break up kindly with Sam and then be honest with Tara about it. That's her obligation. And Nate and Buffy? Kind of stupid. There's no confidentiality agreement to being friends. They have an obligation to tell the people they love if that telling could bring their friends happiness.

That's my soapbox. Thanks for listening.

Why, hello there :wave !

I just found this is intriguing little gem --- ooh and I had a good time reading it...

It was the whole Willow climbing the tree and fainting into the waiting arms of Tara that drew me in! Silly Tara -- leaving for a year without a second date! Clearly she was not thinking, and now Willow has a girlfriend! Oy.

So what are you, kind writer, going to do?

Are you going to drag them down an angst filled path of love? Willow needs to come clean, but somehow I have a feeling that it isn't going to be one of those ...and then everybody did the right thing and were really good and they lived happily ever after in a willow/tara lesbian love filled haze kind of stories.

nope.

I have a feeling that a wee bit more angst lies before them.

For what its worth, I think Willow needs to come clean with Sam right away, Buffy and Nate need to sit down with their respective best buds and talk and then... well I think we all know what happens after both of them are free and clear :-D.

I know I shouldn't be cheering, what with Willow being attached and all, but the scene in the bronze with them dancing and the gravitating and the almost kiss was really cheer worthy (and left me -- and I suspect them -- wanting more).

I am really enjoying your story, it is well written and I like your style. I am especially enjoying the way you writing contrasts these detailed emotionally rich scenes with a hazy kind of fill-in-the-blanks approach to the in between times. I get all the information I need, and a sense of what the characters took away from their respective experiences!

I'm looking forward to your next chapter!

Hey everyone... The next chapter will be a little while longer seeing as school started again. Sorry about that. But meanwhile, it's time for me to reply to everyone =)

bbjane: I'm glad you;re enjoying the story =). I still can't believe you like it, considering I didn't awnt you to find out. Happy Birthday!

Ice: Hello my best beta ever! You'll be the first to know when there's more =).

Dianneswillowtree: Super Tara to the rescue? And thankyou for the compliment on Tara's integrity. That's what I was shooting for.

wimpy0729: ya, lol. Great timing for Sam. I'm glad you're liking the fic. Thanks for the feedback =)

spells42: I know, I feel a bit sorry for her too. But then again, Tara is Tara.

highlandlass25: Hehe, you're not a bad person. I'm glad you enjoyed the update.

sadie: Yay! I'm glad you liked the dance. And thankyou for the compliments.

taralicious: An interloper she is, because we all know that Willow and Tara belong together. I mean, it is the kitten board. And thankoyu for your compliment on the dance. If I can make you feel voyeuristic, then I consider it a good thing =).

Thianne: I'm not sure that Sam will find someone, but who knows?

JustSkipIt: I sort of agree with the needing to be hit over the head. But as with all fics with intensely happy endings, angst is a must.

db: Intriguing gem, huh? Thanks! Thankyou for all the wonderful feedback. I'm glad you're enjoying the story so much. And to hell with it, cheer all you want =).

Thanks for all the support kittens!

:peace ~Sara

Ooh, angst! I can just imagine the swirl of emotions in Tara at seeing Willow with someone else - it must be a strange combination, a kind of "Hey, she's mine!" built up over the months of thinking about her, mixed with the knowledge that she's really in no position to be thinking of Willow as having any kind of a relationship with her at all. It's like GayNow's 'Coming Back' in reverse - there Willow and Tara know all about each other, but are new to being in a real relationship. Here it's almost as if, by thinking about each other so much, they've come to the verge of a relationship without really knowing each other yet.

Chemistry

Chapter 5

“I’ve got to say, I’m surprised Willow. I mean, you’re just going to get over your fear, just like that?” Sam couldn’t keep the skepticism from creeping into her voice. It wasn’t that she didn’t want Willow to face her fears; it’s just that she was uneasy with who was going to be helping with said fears.

“I thought you’d be happy for me. It’s not everyday that a girl gets the chance to remove cause for nightmares. At least if I get over this horse thing, and hopefully remove them from my dreams, then the tadpoles won’t be able to get around so fast. Because, you know, the tadpoles aren’t so scary if they’re not riding ponies. Of course, they could still swim really quickly while the frogs attack from dry land… But that’s not the point. I want to do this Sam. Why are you being so weird about it?” Willow took a deep breath and tried to block out the images she had accidentally introduced into her mind. Instead, she let her mind conjure up the image of that night at the Bronze; Tara so close she could almost feel her breathe, her head tilted and her lips so near to her own. Willow shook her head, trying to make that image go away as well. She couldn’t deny the attraction she felt towards Tara, but Sam was a good person, and she loved her. Willow took another deep breath to calm her spinning mind.

“Fine, Willow. If you want to do this, go ahead. Far be it from me to express some concern. I just don’t want to get hurt. I mean, you; I don’t want you to get hurt.” Sam decided to ignore the Freudian slip her mind had subtly worked into the conversation. Fortunately for Sam, so did Willow.

“I won’t get hurt Sam. I’ll be fine.” Willow smiled, even though she knew Sam couldn’t see it over the phone.

“Alright, Willow. I’ll talk to you later. I love you.”

“I lo-” she stopped herself, unable to let the words pass her lips this time for some reason. “OK, talk to you soon. Bye.” Willow hung up and walked back over to her desk, opening her laptop and her books. If she was going to miss an entire Saturday to learn how to ride a horse, then she needed to get back to work.

-------------

“She likes you Tara,” Nate insisted over the phone.

“Stop it, Nate.”

“It’s true kid. Her best friend told me.” He stopped and thought for a moment. “Well, ok. She said that she probably did, or something like that. I don’t really remember the exact wording.”

“This is exactly what I’m talking about Nate! I’m not going to be a part of this he said, she said business. And besides, even if you’re right, she has a girlfriend! A girlfriend for goodness sake! You know I would never…”

“I know Tara. I’m sorry, it’s just, I can see it. You love her, and I hate seeing you hurting.” In all the time Nate had known Tara, she had never really yelled, except for now. It had taken Nate all of ten seconds to decide to tell Tara about his conversation with Buffy. The reasoning was pretty simple; he loved Tara, especially a happy Tara. And what would make Tara happiest? The knowledge that the woman she’d been pining over for a year might actually return her feelings. In no scenario did he imagine that she would be angry with him for revealing this secret.

Tara sighed and lowered her voice. “I’m sorry Nate. Just drop it, okay? I’ll deal with this, and it’ll be fine. It’s just some horse riding lessons.” She sighed again and said her goodbyes. Just some horse riding lessons. Even her thoughts couldn’t keep the sarcasm from those words. Tara had to admit to herself that had she been able to think more clearly that night at the Bronze, she doubt that Willow would be coming to her house tomorrow for riding lessons. When she asked, all she had been able to think of was Willow; talking with Willow, laughing with Willow, looking at Willow. Now all she could think about was Samantha. Thoughts of the woman, whom Tara believed was far prettier than herself, led to an ache in her heart. The previous gusto with which she returned to Sunnydale was nowhere to be found. Her plans to tell Willow of her feelings gone, crushed with the appearance of the beautiful brunette. Even if she does like you, it doesn’t matter. You know that breaking up a relationship is wrong. Just don’t even go down that road.

Tara knew it wasn’t that simple. It did matter if Willow liked her. It meant hope, but unless Willow was planning on leaving her girlfriend, then that hope was pointless. Tara put the phone back in its cradle and left the house. She walked towards the stables and opened up her horse’s stall. Damon was a beautiful animal; dark brown, almost black, with a single white streak that ran down his snout. The horse had been a going away present from her parents. He had been a small foal then, but now he was full grown and the best horse Tara had. She grabbed a brush from the bucket outside the stall and began to lovingly brush him down. Her thoughts once again easily drifted to Willow, though they didn’t have to travel too far; the red-head was never too distant from her contemplations.

-------------

“Alright, Willow. The first thing we have to d-do is get you used to b-being near a horse. Are you r-ready?”

Willow nodded her head slowly, petrified and excited at the same time. She took a deep breath as she took in the sight before her. The horse was huge, or at least it looked huge to Willow. She nodded her head again and looked at Tara. Tara met her gaze and, without thinking, softly took the red-head’s hand. Willow looked down for a moment at their now clasped hands and then looked back into Tara’s eyes. Tara smiled and took a step forward. She waited a moment to allow Willow to follow and then took another small step. Several moves later, they stood in front of the horse. Tara lifted Willow’s hand and moved it near the horse’s snout.

“This is Damon. He’s the best horse I have. I p-promise, he’s very sweet.” Tara looked at Willow before continuing. “Just flatten your h-hand and allow him to g-get acquainted with you.” Willow did as Tara instructed and reached her hand towards the horse’s nose. She almost withdrew it as she felt the animal’s breath across her palm, but gritted her teeth and steadied her hand. Tentatively, as if the horse was just as wary of Willow, he nudged his snout forwards.

“I’m scared to move,” Willow admitted. Tara took a firmer grip on Willow’s hand and moved their joined hands up and down across Damon’s muzzle. After several moments of letting Willow get used to being near the horse, Tara let go of her hand. She took a step back and just watched for a moment, admiring the way Willow had warmed to the horse. Tara walked over to the fence and took off the saddle and bridle she had placed there. After a few more minutes of letting Willow become used to being around Damon, Tara showed her how to put on the bridle and the saddle.

“How are you d-doing?”

“Oh my gosh! I pet a horse! And, and I was scared at first, but now I’m ok. And I pet a horse!” Willow jumped up and down excitedly and then grabbed Tara in a tight hug. “Thank you so much!” Tara didn’t move, afraid that if she did Willow would release her immediately. The two women stood there holding each other for longer than they probably should have, and then Willow let go and stepped back. She smiled sheepishly at Tara, her eyes sparkling with happiness.

“You don’t have to thank m-me Willow. You’re the one who d-did it.” Tara smiled. “So, are you r-ready to try riding?”

Willow’s bright smile dropped slightly as she realized that she would have to actually ride a horse. Willow nodded her head slowly and moved beside the animal. Tara moved to her side and put one hand on Willow’s waist. She put her other hand on the stirrup and told Willow to lift her left leg and put her foot into the hold. Willow did as Tara said and then stopped moving, awaiting Tara’s next instruction. Tara’s grip tightened on Willow’s waist as she motioned for Willow to push off the ground and settle onto the horse’s back. The red-head jumped off the ground and used her left foot to throw her other leg over the horse. Once she was atop the animal, she finally realized how high up everything looked; she started to panic.

“Tara, I can’t do this. It’s too high, and I’m gonna fall, and please just get me down,” Willow pleaded.

“Willow, would it h-help if I was up there with you?” Tara was proud of how far Willow had gotten, but she wanted her to feel comfortable on the horse. She was afraid if Willow left now, she wouldn’t be able to get back on. Willow squeaked out a yes and Tara swiftly pulled herself up onto the horse, settling in behind Willow. Both women let out a soft sigh at the feeling. Tara’s thighs molded around Willow’s hips. She slid forwards and grabbed the reigns, pressing them into Willow’s hands. After showing her the correct hand position, Tara let go of the reigns and put her hands on the outside of Willow’s.

“Alright, I’m just going to stay back here and help you l-learn to guide Damon around.” Willow breathed a sigh of relief and tried to relax. That task proved to be difficult as her mind was clouded due to being so close to Tara. Tara was in a similar state. She tried to stay calm, but inside she was going insane. The feeling of Willow’s hips was breaking her concentration. She breathed deeply and showed Willow the commands for guiding Damon. After twenty minutes, Tara felt that Willow was doing well enough that she could try alone. After making sure that the red-head would be alright, Tara dropped to the ground and walked over to the fence. By the end of the lesson Willow was able to walk Damon around the ring. She jumped off the horse and ran over to Tara, once again enveloping her in an embrace. This time, Tara wrapped her arms around Willow and squeezed her back.

“You did so g-great, Willow!” Tara smiled brightly and squeezed Willow again. She released the red-head reluctantly and walked over to Damon. Tara ended the lesson by showing Willow how to brush the horse and put him away in his stall. The blonde walked Willow to her car and they agreed to meet the next Saturday at the same time. Tara sat down on the porch swing and tilted her head back, resting it on the edge of the swing. Willow had been so adorable all day, it had taken all of Tara’s restraint to not grab the red-head and kiss her senseless. She sighed deeply and contemplated telling Willow to not come next Saturday. As much as Tara loved seeing her, it was difficult to spend so much time with Willow and stay in control. But Tara knew that she would never give up the time she had with her. She loved her too much.

-------------

Several weeks passed, and Willow went to Tara’s every Saturday. Willow was the happiest Sam had ever seen her. Every time they talked, Tara came up one way or another. It was always something Tara said, or a funny story Tara told Willow. And it wasn’t only Sam that noticed the changes in Willow. Buffy saw it too. Her best friend was happier than she had ever been, and Buffy knew the reason. It wasn’t until the morning of Willow’s fifth lesson that Buffy decided to tell Willow about her conversation with Nate. She had been keeping the secret the entire time, afraid that it could somehow hurt Willow. Of course, seeing the changes in her friend made her think that she had been stupid to keep the secret this long. Willow was making coffee, getting ready to drive to Tara’s for another lesson. Buffy poked her head into the room, watching as Willow sat down at the table with her coffee. The red-head just stared straight ahead and nursed her drink. Buffy walked into the kitchen and sat down in the chair across from Willow. Willow’s eyes focused on her friend and waited for Buffy to talk.

“Will, there’s something I need to tell you. I-” Buffy stopped talking for a moment, trying to gather her thoughts. After several moments of trying to find a way to say what she came down there to say, Buffy realized it didn’t matter. “Tara’s in love with you,” Buffy blurted out.

Willow spit out the mouthful of coffee all over the table. She tried to breathe but only succeeded in choking slightly. “What?!” Willow squeaked.

“She’s in love with you Willow. Her best friend told me. She’s loved you since she went away.” Buffy looked at Willow, trying to gauge the emotions on her face. Willow’s mouth was opening and closing and she looked very similar to a guppy. After taking a breath, she was finally able to speak.

“He, he told you this? That night at the Bronze?”

Buffy nodded her head. “I didn’t mean to keep it a secret for so long Will. I just, I didn’t know if I was supposed to. I’m sorry, Willow.” Buffy looked away from Willow, almost ashamed to look into her eyes.

“It’s alright, Buff,” Willow said softly. She paused a moment, before asking a question. “Why did you decide to tell me now?”

“Honestly Will? You just seem so happy, and I thought if Tara was the reason for you being so happy, then you should know. I guess I’m trying to say, if you were to say something to her, then this information might make it a little easier.” Buffy sighed and looked at her best friend. “What are you going to do?”

Willow returned the look and took a breath before answering. “I don’t know what to do Buffy. I just, I don’t know what to do.”

Hey everyone... There will be a small update soon. I hope everyone enjoyed the latest chapter, despite all the horrible angst I'm putting everyone through. :peace

Tazraven,
This was just too adorable and steamy for words to accurately encompass the seething cauldron of emotions I increasingly feel towards Samantha, who is not only an interloper but by her actions has proven herself to be the sort of person who would deliberately prey on someone's fears and discourage them from overcoming them in order to allay their own i.e, she tells Willow she doesn't think Willow can overcome her fear of horses because Samantha is afraid of losing Willow to Tara and the close proximity they'll be in on their riding lessons.
Like Samantha has a choice.
Quote:
“I lo-” she stopped herself, unable to let the words pass her lips this time for some reason

Already, after the memorable dance they shared, Willow's subconscious mind is burrowing its way into her conscious thoughts and not allowing her to say those three precious words to anyone other than who most deserves to hear them.
Quote:
“This is exactly what I’m talking about Nate! I’m not going to be a part of this he said, she said business. And besides, even if you’re right, she has a girlfriend! A girlfriend for goodness sake! You know I would never…”

For Tara's part, she should do the exact opposite of what Neil Sedaka sang and remember that breaking up isn't hard to do when it gains you Willowkisses.
The horse lesson itself is a tableau in barely supressed desire and longing with each of them touching and caressing each other a bit longer than propriety would approve of.

:pinky Ok here is the thing if everyone can see that Willow is happer than ever than so can Sam. We are getting very close to the lines being crossed and no matter who it is if lines get crossed without breaking up with Sam then it is just wrong and I don,t beleve our girl would do that Tara is keeping her self in check and Willow is not seeing the whole picture but Buffy just opened her eyes so now Willow needs to fix it one way or the other!!! :kgeek

tazraven: Great fic, I just got caught up with it, its really great. I really love the premise of it, Tara a horse trainer and Willow a professor and afraid of horses, just great. The whole Samantha thing through me off a little but I'm really glad that Nate told Buffy what Tara really felt and I'm especially glad that Buffy decided to tell Willow the truth about Tara's feelings for her. I'm kinda concerned for Samantha, but we all know that Willow and Tara belong together, hint hint. Hopefully we'll get some :wtkiss soon. I can't wait to read more.

Hey there. Well I like the progression here much better. I'm not considering bopping them on their metaphorical heads any longer. I still would like to see Willow show some integrity and be honest with Sam today rather than tomorrow or any other day. But I know that you're trying to write some angst so ... Sam's smart but she might want to let go rather than pursuing someone who doesn't really love here. Nice that Nate and Buffy are good friends.

Hehe poor Willow... I know what to do!! ;)

Let's hope she'll figure it out soon enough! (though she probably already knows, somewhere in her head)

Thanks for another great update!

Man. Willow is in a rough space -- she has a lovely nice girlfriend and she's in love with someone she barely knows. It is not an easy place to be in, and I suspect she's doing the best she can -- but now that she's been spending time with Tara and knows how she feels? She needs to make a clean break even if it is hard -- it's only fair. Sam deserves that much courtesy.

...and she should do it soon, what with all the shared saddles and close proximity. I hope Willow doesn't do anything stupid. I know, I know! Something about entertainment and needing a little angst, and it makes for good reading to have some character flaws... but can Willow *please* let Sam down easy before she makes a fool of her?

Aww, as much as I want :wtkiss I feel sad for Sam with her unrequited Willow love. It seems like Sam is maybe buying a clue -- and good for her, but man. Owch.

And also, poor Tara -- it must be so hard for her knowing that Willow is seeing someone. Plus with all the chemistry -- how long can she resist Willow smoochies with such close proximity?! And if she relents then she'll not only be "the other woman" she'll lose respect for herself *and* Willow. Another owch.

anticipating more delicious angstyness...

Alright, it's time again to respond to the wonderful feedback I've been getting. I would also like to say thanks to everyone who is enjoying this fic. I know it's a bit angsty, but everyone has character flaws, even Willow and Tara.

highlandlass25: More is on the way =). Thanks for not hating the angst.

taralicious: Thanks for your awesome feeback! I'm glad you're enjoying it, and I promise, the breakup will come eventually as everyone knows it will. Willowkisses full speed ahead =).

Dianneswillowtree: I promise, everything will turn out right. And yes, lines are getting very close to being crossed :blush

Lonewolf22: I'm happy that you're enjoying yourself. And yes, yay for Buffy for being truthful, if not tactless =).

JustSkipIt: Yay for not hitting people on their metaphorical heads. And ya, angst is what I like, but I also like resolved issues =).

sadie: Hehe, I have a feeling you and Willow would do the same thing. She'll figure her feelings out soon.

morningstar: I'm flattered that you sacrificed some sleep to read my fic =), though calculus can be annoying. I would rather be reading a Willow and Tara fic any day ;-)

db: I know you feel bad for Sam, and I hate to make people feel sad. I don't know if I can make Willow be perfect. She is a person, like anyone else, and all people have flaws. All I can say is love clouds your mind, regardless of everything else in your life. Thanks for reading!

Thianne: Thanks for the compliment. Come back soon =).

I'll have a very small update for ya'll tonight. Please heed the angst warnings at the top of the update. Glad everyone's enjoying it! :peace

Chemistry

Chapter 6

Sam started her car and followed Willow’s SUV. The brunette knew that she shouldn’t be doing this, but that way Willow had been acting ever since beginning her lessons with Tara had made her insecure enough to take extreme measures. Of course, this all could have been avoided if Sam had just asked Willow if anything was going on, but she was too afraid of the answer. If Willow told the truth and told Sam that something was going on between her and Tara, then she would be heartbroken. But, if Willow lied to her, then it would make the situation even worse. Then again, maybe nothing at all was going on and Willow just really liked horseback riding. In any case, Sam had to know and so she followed Willow to Tara’s house. She watched as her girlfriend got out of the car and greeted Tara with a small wave.

Samantha parked her car a small ways down the road and followed Willow and Tara from a safe distance. The lesson seemed to proceed normally. Willow prepared her horse and mounted. Sam couldn’t believe how well Willow could ride. She trotted, cantered, and at one point, even jumped a small hurdle. Sam was impressed. When Willow had told her that she was going to learn how to ride a horse, her initial reaction had been disbelief. But seeing her now, she had to admit that Willow was doing great.

A couple of hours later, the lesson seemed like it was winding down. Tara had Willow slow the horse and walked beside the animal. Willow released her right leg from one of the stirrups and brought it around so that she was leaning halfway off the horse. Tara stood; ready to help if Willow needed it. The red-head reached her right foot down towards the ground and attempted to pull out her left foot at the same time. This proved to be a mistake. Willow toppled off the horse and onto Tara, knocking them both onto the ground. Tara landed on her back with Willow lying on top of her. Sam waited for Willow to move off of the blonde, but that didn’t happen. Willow looked down at Tara and then time seemed to stand still.

---------------

Tara saw Willow falling but could do nothing to stop it. She put up her hands and tried to brace Willow’s fall. The blonde landed on her back with the wind slightly knocked out of her. Tara turned her head and found Willow looking down at her. Cobalt eyes gazed into emerald pools as the seconds passed, with neither woman making a move. Time stood still, and nothing else existed except her and Willow. Very slowly, Willow began to lean forward, her eyes never wavering from the woman before her. Tara couldn’t breathe, afraid that the slightest movement would break the spell. She closed her eyes and licked her lips as Willow drew closer.

---------------

Willow landed on top of Tara and gazed at the woman below her. Cerulean eyes slowly focused on her own as the two women breathed deeply. Willow couldn’t tear her gaze away and without thinking, she began to deliberately close the gap. Her head moved lower, and Willow licked her lips in anticipation. She could think of nothing else, only Tara, and how little space was now between them. She moved even closer, now feeling their mingled breaths. She saw Tara close her eyes and moisten her own lips. Out of the corner of her eye, Willow saw movement. She whipped her head around and gasped at the sight of Sam running away. Willow looked back down at Tara, and saw confused blue eyes stare back at her. The red-head jumped off of Tara, wobbling slightly due to her light-headedness. She sprinted towards her car and left.

---------------

Sam, like the two women she was watching, seemed unable to move for the longest moment. She was jolted out of her frozen position as she saw Willow begin to move her head towards Tara’s. Sam jumped up and ran to her car. She didn’t need to see anything else to confirm her suspicions. The brunette threw open her car door and started the engine, almost flooring the pedal in her attempt to leave. Finally, with several miles between her and the farmhouse, Sam was able to breathe again.

---------------

Tara was stunned. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t move. She had been so sure that Willow was going to kiss her, and then she hadn’t. Willow had instead turned her head to the side before looking back at her own confused face. And without a second glance, Willow had leapt off of her own body and sprinted to her SUV, thrown open the door, and sped off the property. Tara slowly picked herself up off the ground and walked back to the house. She trudged up the stairs and walked into her room, finally breaking down when her head hit the pillow. She sobbed, finally releasing that last sliver of hope that Willow returned her feelings. For minutes or hours, Tara couldn’t be sure; she laid in bed, curled into a tight ball. Finally, the tears stopped, and Tara fell asleep.

I'll probably have the next chapter by the end of the weekend, at the latest early next week. Thanks for reading :peace

You've made my heart ache for every single one of them.

Oh the delicious angst.

Ooh, that was rough. One little tumble and things fell apart, they fell apart so hard.

Although I wanted Sam to know, it would have been better if Willow would just have told her.

Good job with the angst. Now more please, so we can move on to getting these issues resolved.
