DIBS!!!! more to follow....

ETA: I need to sit with the emotions for a bit before I leave real feedback, but I wanted to thank you for yet another wonderful installment. My thoughts are swirly and I've got butterflies - a sure sign of emotional impact.

ETA: Okay, even though I really should be on my way to work by now, I've returned with more substantial feedback.

I've said this before, but it bears repeating. You're version of Faith is a pleasure to experience. The entire exchange between Faith and Willow speaks to their very close bond; my heart broke when Faith asked if Willow was safe. She understands the visceral pain that Willow is in and realizes that intense emotion can sometimes make us do stupid things – things to hurt ourselves.

Faith let out a similarly relieved laugh. “Ok. It’s the middle of the night and our minds and hearts don’t always work the same in the dark. Call me tomorrow and I’ll give you the 4-1-1 on her.”

It's true, isn't it? How is it that the darkness alters the inner workings of our hearts and minds? Is it the perceived safety? The anonymity?

She remembered and forced herself (unsuccessfully) to not think about the times she’d done just that for real. It had been a guilty pleasure, then an obsession, and finally an inside joke between the two girls as Willow traced and traced her lover’s features. “Sculpting” they both called it—Willow’s lack of artistic talent fuelling the irony.

This remembrance is simply beautiful.

Reading those poems, truly knowing the emotion behind them, the events that led to their creation must be a double-edged sword for Willow. Yes, there is the pride that comes with having the inside scoop but there must also be a dose of guilt, mustn't there? To know that her actions – or lack thereof – created such intense pain?

Although she’d planned very little about this visit—this ambush her mind kept accusing her—she did know that she wanted to join the reading just as it was about to start or just after it started and sit in the back. The last thing she wanted was to pull Tara’s focus or throw off her delivery.

With this thought, we get a glimpse into a more grown-up Willow; she's not as selfish and is more considerate of other feelings. Of course, the "ambush" (as her brain insists on calling it) is a wee bit selfish, but really what else could she do? They've been apart for so long and have become so adept at avoiding each other, both in person and in mind, that no other method would work. Phone calls are too easy to either ignore or delay, letters allow too much time to rewrite, to analyze. True, Willow could just walk out of the shop but, at least in my experience, sometimes the hardest part is just getting there. Once you're there, everything gets a little bit easier. Sure, the nerves are still running roughshod throughout your being, but you've cleared the first, most difficult hurdle – you showed up.

It was pulled back by a pewter hair clasp that Willow recognized as belonging to Tara’s mother. That clasp was the only part of Tara’s outfit the redhead had seen before.

And here we have a tangible reminder that Willow really doesn't know Tara at all anymore. She has changed and grown in ways that Willow simply cannot comprehend because she removed herself from the experience. It must hurt, knowing that she's missed so much – even the little things like hair color, wardrobe, tone of voice. It’s all different and it's all happened without her.

Tara’s mouth dropped open slightly as she spotted Willow. Their eyes locked but only for a second before she continued scanning the crowd.

I applaud Tara's strength, to be able to continue with her work, with sharing her art, when her long-absent muse is sitting in the audience. It speaks to the emotional growth and maturity that Tara has experienced.

Willow reached into her bag, unsure how to bridge the uneasy silence. “I realized you never wrote anything in my book for me.” She extended it toward the blonde.

Tara approached with a knowing smirk on her face. “Yes, I did, Willow.”

“I’m not here to fight but I think I would have noticed if you had written in it. I’ve had it all day,” Willow said with a puzzled look on her face.

Tara smiled widely as she took the book from her ex-lover. “You never would read the title pages, Willow.” She held out the book so that Willow could see the dedication:
For Willow and every one of our Stars

Despite the long separation and the fact that they have both changed, these two women have a deep history and still know each other. It's truly beautiful.

Throughout the entire piece, I couldn't help thinking that Tara is so much more confident than Willow. Is it because the meeting is taking place on her "turf" where she can draw strength from her friends and surrounds and talent? Has Tara's art given her an edge in dealing with highly-charged emotional situations? Or is it that we're seeing Tara through Willow's eyes in this update? That Willow sees a strong, self-contained women where she herself is a nervous wreck?

Given that we only get a yearly look at them, I guess we'll never really get to see this interaction from Tara's point of view. Sigh…Can't wait to see if the next year sees them truly back together or still struggling on the road to reconciliation.

Debra - That was wonderful!

Thank God Willow finally gave in and asked Faith about Tara. Willow reading Tara's poetry and seeing all of the hurt Tara had been feeling brought tears to my eyes.

I like how shocked Tara was to find out that Willow had been waiting at the bookshop all day. I think that it shows that Willow is being serious - however, I'm not sure how Tara feels about it. I'll keep that one to myself until I've read your next chapter.

The meal was good. It could have been an ordeal for Willow (a bit like Willow's party was for Tara a few years back) but it seemed to go okay. Tara was obviously keeping an eye on Willow. I think that Grace and Joanne helped. I loved Willow and Grace playing Rock Paper scissors to decide who was going to marry Tara.

Now the two women are a Tara's home and hopefully they will talk.

Looking forward to your next update.

:party

I just like the idea of Willow and Tara Aloney Mcaloney Alone together . . . but then again, what Kitten doesn't? :kdevil I'm not asking for smut, but I am thinking about it.

Faith is a really awesome character in Menorah Tales . . . I really love the friendship between Willow, Faith and Tara. It anchors the story in an interesting way.

I love the declaration of Willow's RPS supremacy in the eighth grade (BTW, the RPS International Championship is being held in Toronto this year . . . 3 months after Amber is there, coincidence? I think not). It's the cute little details that keep me running back for more Menorah Tales. And, did you have to make Grace so goshdarn cute! I swear I wanted to pinch her little cheeks. So many cute details.

And so much lies unresolved . . . I was more nervous than Willow to see how Tara would react. Tara's stutter came back! Is that good? Bad? Mediocre? I started Willowbabbling in my head, and I don't think I read the last part all that well. But I noticed that Tara had dedicated her first book to Willow. So it's gotta be good. Bad? Mediocre?

I think I'll be nervous until I get to read the next update.

Okay, so I've not left feedback for this story at all so far because I've been so busy moving and doing other important life things, but I had to let you know that I've just finished the last chapter and you've got me all emotional and choked up. I think I can feel a tear forming. It makes my heart hurt, but in the best of ways. And maybe when I get all this life stuff out of the way I'll come back and leave better feedback. Right now I just need you to know that this chapter touched me deep and I wasn't prepared for that, but it feels good.

Wow. Another heart-rending peace of update from you. Thanks. You had me on the verge of tears after the last sentence. It's so Willow not to notice the dedication. But I think everything after Tara mentioning Willow indicates that she has forgiven her redhead. As I learned only a few years ago myself: Some things just need their time to heal. You can't force them. If they are meant to happen they will.

It's so Willow, too, taking the first step. She is courageous and carefree enough to not let her doubts get the upper hand. Even if she sits in the book store the whole time and wonders weather it was the right thing to do. It will be. I'm sure about that. Wonder if they will take it slow one step at a time or if they rush together again.

Sorry, I think I missed some FB on the last chapters. They were equally intoxicating as this one.

Wow. You had my heart racing for the entire update. I kept wanting to know what was going to happen. Wow. I was in tears by the end. It was written so beautifully. And I loved the part when Willow was playing Rock-Paper-Scissors on who got to marry Tara. It was precious. Well, I can't wait to see what happens with our girls after another year. I'll be anxiously waiting... :whistle

I've spent some time re-reading the series (yep, I have no life :blush) and I've just realized what, in my mind, is a major factor with the crumbling of Willow and Tara's relationship. They were too focused on the physical/sexual aspect of their life together and didn't spend time developing the deeper, more philosophical connection needed to sustain a long-term relationship. Yes, they love each other very much and they know they felt happiness together, but did the ever really KNOW each other?

In part 7 while at the diner after Faith's police academy graduation, Tara admits to Faith that she doesn't want to "waste the time" confronting Willow about feeling left out of her life because they've only been able to visit each other once that semester. In part 8 when Willow and Tara a trying to find "something fun" to do, Willow teases and flirts, suggesting that they could just spend the afternoon in bed.

Their lack of knowing each other's dreams and desires (other than those of the flesh) is also illustrated by the revelation (great catch Sally) that Tara planned to study abroad long before the fight with Willow that caused the rift.

By part 9, Willow is finally starting to get it:

“I know that her favorite musician is Josh Groban, her favorite poet is James Dickey, she loves Strawberries but not Raspberries. She loves flannel sheets but she doesn’t like slippers.” The redhead smiled. “She’s most ticklish behind her ears and she wants to have three children and I could tell you a hundred other facts about her.”

Faith waited a few seconds before prompting Willow. “But?”

“But there’s so much I don’t know about her.” She wiped at her eyes again. “I lie in bed some nights with hundreds of questions in my head: what is she doing? Does she miss me? What does she want from life? What are her dreams? Her fears?”

Let's hope they learn from their mistakes and realize there is more to relationships than sex. Just so we're clear, this is by no means an indication that I don't want to read about their physical reunion, so Debra, don't skimp on the smut when you get them back together. ;-)

Thanks again for creating such an engaging story.

dibs! dibs....my ass! i swear i was first! but then i started reading.....

anyway, first of all, i'm really happy thet you updated, 'cause i absolutely love this story. i'll list the things that i liked in this update (think i got this from sallymcfine....*chuckles*):
- i loved the fact that they didn't fight when they saw each other
- i think it's great that tara published a book! (and about this missy - you definitely have to write at least "that curve of you hip"....i read Survivors: Ash Island and i don't mind you poetry, so even if it's crap i still wanna read it. ok? pretty please?)
- i think it's just too sweet that tara dedicated her book to willow....so in love, still, after 3 freakin' years
- i think it's just to sweet willow, too, that went to tara when it was published her first book
- i found it really funny, that everyone knew willow as "Tara's willow", and also the fact that Gay recognized her, this:

The Curve of your hip

was just too funny! and cute.

uhmm...i think i wrote all the things i liked most and i didn't forget anything....so i finish saying that i loved the update, as always, and that i hope you'll post another one soon :-D

love

So what have Lost and Menorah Tales got in common?

The fact that after each installment I immediately think, "Wah, how am I going to survive till the next episode/update"

That was a great update.

I liked Willow calling Faith at two in the morning. It's not surprising that once she'd decided to find Tara she would want to get started on it right away.

It's good that Willow read Tara's poems before meeting her, since it showed her both how much Tara cared about her and it let her see the argument from Tara's point of view.

But this wasn’t a dream. It was reality and reality meant that there were things to work through.

Which is a good thing since IIRC that dream didn't have a particularly happy ending.

I enjoyed Willow's conversation with Grace and their plan to solve who should marry Tara. Coincidentally there was a story on Slashdot today about a high court case in which the judge got so annoyed with the constant bickering between the two lawyers that he ordered them to settle the matter of where they should hold the dispositions with A game of rock, paper, scissors

For Willow and every one of our Stars

That was brilliant

Looking forward to the next part

So I was just about to post "Can we have an update to Menorah Tales?

"Can we, JustSkipIt?"

And then you updated. Heh. I crack myself up.

Also, everyone's quite complimentary that I "figured out" the little nugget you put in there about the Tara studying abroad thing, but I have to say, I didn't really figure anything out. I emailed with Debra, who said "Okay, here's a hint" to which I said "I still don't get it" to which she said "Pay attention to the timeline" to which I said "Oh!" So I didn't figure anything out; Debra told me what it was. Subtle.

Anyway, my non-brilliance aside, bravo on this update, Deb. I'm glad that Willow decided to make the first move. Your description of the bookstore reminds me of Tattered Covers in Denver, CO. Right down to the honey-flavored muffins. It was pretty bold of Willow to show up at Tara's book release reading with no warning. But on the other hand, if she didn't know how Tara was going to react, then that was probably for the best because she didn't want to throw Tara off her stride before the reading. But I'm so, so glad she decided to make the first move. What spurred her to it, do you think?

I really like mole's analysis of why their relationship fell apart at first - because they were too focused on the physical aspect. I think when you grow up with someone you see them as you used to know them, and in college people grow and change and become different people. Maybe what happened during college and while they were separated was that they kept this vision of each other in their minds and didn't feel like they needed to do the work of continuing to get to know each other. They were both changing subtly, bit by bit, though. This becomes clear for Willow when she sees the changes in Tara - especially the confidence and lack of stuttering.

If they do get back together after this, then I think they probably won't take each other for granted anymore. Can't wait for the next!

Aww. Now I'm a puddle of mush after the update. Thank you!

I liked the idea of Tara doing a booksigning. Since I just met Amber this past weekend, I can totally picture this. I love this update and the inclusion of the whole ide of "can we just skip it?" I also liked how Tara knew Willow enough to know that she hadn't read the dedication page, when there was a personal note in there for her. *sigh* The dedication part was so sweet and romantic. Great update.

Sigh.

That was really beautiful.

I loved the poem titles - really insightfull and left these beautiful little poem images in my head.

Kind of an odd association, I know - but it was almost like a movie I saw called Ive Heard The Mermaids Singing. You'd have to see the movie to get the allusion - but the protagonist in the movie is a photographer. The photographs in the movie had this way of hinting at a real deep and nuanced kind of a moment. I imagined Tara's poems to be like that.

I want to know where Tara stands and I can't help but hope that they are lighting the menorah together again next year.

Thank you for sucha beautiful and heartwarming chapter.

Just what I needed to cheer me up!

db

ETA: I think Tara must've gone off her Willow thought diet in order to write a whole book of poetry about her!
I know that "it's a long & complicated process".

I have to confess, I never left feedback for this story before because I usually try and only comment on stories which don't get as much feedback. (Don't be mad :p) But this update was the most beautiful one so far. I just had to write at least a few lines to let you know. And you did that with just one line:
For Willow and every one of our Stars.

It's just a very nice idea that Tara worked through the break-up through writing. The situation with 'The curve of your hip' kinda reminds me of when Willow first came to the alternate reality in Paths diverged / divulged and everyone already knew about her because of Tara's paintings.
Can't wait for the next update and maybe the talk? Or will the next one by a year later again? *curious* :x

JustSkipIt
It made my day when I logged on for my breakfast browse and found an update to Menorah Tales. I've been following this story but I'm not sure if I've left feedback before. I'm sorry about that, I always think that I've nothing of value to add to the clever and insightful comments, and just want to say 'what she said'.

However I'm trying to be a more encouraging kitten, so I'll add my two cents worth. :kitty

You know when you get your favourite chocolate out of the box and you try to make it last by sucking slowly, and focusing entirely on the flavour? Then when you finish it you pause a moment and just ... sigh. That's what I was like with today's update.

For Willow and every one of our Stars
What an excellent finish (to the update). It indicates to me that Tara has forgiven Willow but seems to think it's up to Willow to initiate any reconciliation? Thank goodness Willow has finally put aside her pride and gone to find her.

I like these two people: they're more mature (duh!), thoughtful and considerate. Tara's confidence and poise is impressive and Willow's friendliness to the child - Grace - displays kindness and humour. Surely they are now equipped to work out their differences and hurt and GET BACK TOGETHER! :blush BTW, I think I would like to hear these poems, expecially 'That Curve of Your Hip'. ;-)

Looking forward to more.
thanks

We interupt this feedback thread for the following independent bookstore announcement:

Sally, you must have been to Denver. Is the Tattered not the BEST bookstore in all the land?! Definitely one of the perks to living in the Queen City of the West.

We now return you to the already-in-progress feedback thread. We apologize for the interuption.

This is my first feedback for this fic and I wanted to let you know I"m loving it. It's killing me...but I'm loving it. I've been lurking for, well...ever, but I love your stuff and wanted to thank you for writing it.

I'm digging the year skippage way more than I thought I would, esp. with the angst being spread out over years. ; )

Again, thanks for entertaining me and keeping my favorite couple alive and kissin.

We interrupt this feedback to hijack the thread for independent bookstore discussion:

mole wrote:Sally, you must have been to Denver. Is the Tattered not the BEST bookstore in all the land?!

mole, yes! I went to Denver earlier this year for a work meeting and our hosts gave us all gift certificates to Tattered Covers. I spent a couple of hours in there browsing around and could easily have spent all day. I was totally visualizing Tattered Covers and if the bookstore in MT was like it, then Willow would have had no problem at all spending an entire day there. If I had that bookstore in my town, you'd never catch me in Borders. It's like a magic place or something!

No I didn't get it at all, now I feel bad. :( My excuse is that I don't have time on my hands like Sally has. Oh wait, she got it before she became gardening lady, so my bad. I suppose it's general unfamiliarity with the Jewish calendar as well as Thanksgiving not being a date of note in my world.

Anyway, chapter 11. I was at the edge of my seat reading the whole update. Will they meet? How will they react? You built the suspense slowly yet sustained it throughout the chapter.

I suppose time does heal wounds somewhat, it's only a matter of time before one of them breaks down and tries to get in touch again. Still, it took courage on Willow's part. Often in these cases, doesn't it (in her mind) show that she is admitting she's in the wrong? So like Willow to spend the whole day in the bookstore "casing the joint."

Again with the passage of time, maturity and confidence built up and I applaud Tara reacted to a) spotting Willow in the crowd and b) coming face to face with her. Just as her London friends are acutely aware of who Willow was, the fact that Gay could recognize Willow, and how Joanne refers to her as "Tara's Willow" shows that she has been constantly in Tara's mind and she has mentioned her to her friends. One doesn't usually refer to an ex like that.

Willow reached into her bag, unsure how to bridge the uneasy silence. “I realized you never wrote anything in my book for me.” She extended it toward the blonde.

Tara approached with a knowing smirk on her face. “Yes, I did, Willow.”

Before I read the dedication, I had a notion that everything Tara wrote in that book was for Willow. Then I read the dedication, and I decided that everything Tara wrote in that book was for Willow.

Um, nothing for me to spot this time I hope?

Wow, two wonderful chapters.

Chapter 10: Nice to have a little insight into Tara's life in England. It's especially nice to see her having such good friends around her to talk about anything and everything. Kinda heartbreaking to see Tara still honor the menorah tradition thinking of Willow and wondering if Willow ever thought of her.

I really enjoyed the friendly banter of friends in the pub. Showed just how close knit they are.

Both girls are making their mark on the world. I could get bonked on the head for saying this, but maybe this separation was the best for both of them. Would either one of them have gotten as far as they got if they were anchored in Sunnydale?

Nice suprise with Olivia bartending at the pub. :D

Chapter 11: Wow, I could actually feel Willow's nervousness in this chapter. So much so that my palms were sweating and there was a little flutter in my chest that lasted up until the last line of the chapter:

For Willow and every one of our Stars

What a beautiful way to end the chapter. Eight little words that will, perhaps, be the catalyst to their reconciliation. Even though it seems like such a long road to be travelled, it exudes the hope that Tara and Willow most likely have carried with them for the past 3 years. And isn't hope a beautiful thing?

I also enjoyed seeing Tara's Entropy speech in there as well. Very nice touch. [/Sniff, sniff]

I'm anxious to see if you let us see what Willow had been up to in the previous years and if she had had the kind of support that Tara did while she was in England. I'm thinking not so much outside of Faith, since the description of Willow includes driven and "she's a machine". Doesn't look like there was much dealing with stuff on Willow's end as there was on Tara's. Although, I'm sure it has something to do with Tara's chosen Literary vocation, because how much soul searching can be done in a lab with science and mathematics?

Very well done, Debra. As always, I can't wait for more.

Phew! About time- I mean, at last, yeah, that's what I was saying :blush The immense feeling I got out of this chapter is of two people who never stopped loving each other - it came across especially strongly from Tara, seeing as it was from Willow's point of view, but it was there for both of them. But Tara... that dedication really put the seal on it: all her personal success, the independent, glorious person she is now, is still all about Willow at heart. And having gone through their separation, now Willow will be able to apprecate her, and vice versa.

And okay, the next chapter will be a year later, so we won't actually be able to see hot make-up sex, but perhaps there's the prospect of hot insert-purpose-here sex anyway? :D

Aside from innuendo, what I've got in mind now is that saying about letting love go, and if it's meant to be it'll come back. Willow and Tara, unwittingly but nonetheless certainly, did their darndest to scuttle their love, and yet here they are, together again, and to all appearances, about to embark on an even stronger, more joyous chapter of their love. Say it with me: Awww :x

I love this story. I love watching Willow and Tara grow up, even thought it’s been painful that they’ve grown apart. I’m really enjoying Tara as an independent person with friends and a career of her own (and secretly hope we might get a glimpse that both Willow and Tara had dated others during their time apart). I love Faith as a constant rock for them both. Whether planned or not, I also think the time lapse between posts helps me to feel the story’s passage of time. And as much as I love this story, I don’t think I’d want the posts to be any closer together. To me, it helps solidify that while each may have felt her life crumbling after the infamous party, life goes on and each has created something new, something that is uniquely her own. Yet, as many have said, Willow and Tara still have commonality; still have the same fundamental building blocks. And one way that was brought home to me was in the ‘paper, scissors, rock’ exchange, when Willow said she was Jr. High champion and Tara both independently and spontaneously corroborated that. Their intimate familiarity with one another as children and teenagers makes for a wonderful foundation and commonality upon which a new relationship (hopefully!) can be forged. And, see, this is what I like about your writing, too. I don’t think you cloud it with extemporaneous and superfluous things. I think you’re very skilled at controlling stories, guiding us through the twists and turns of some very creative plots, without them ever seeming contrived. Your earlier emphases on Tara’s love of the book as a creation and Willow’s love of the words as knowledge came into its own in the last scene when Tara opened Willow’s copy, and gently, but knowingly, reminded Willow that she never reads the title page. That was a wonderful, just wonderful, uplifting, hopeful way to end that post. Again, I just love this story!

It's probably a valid indicator of my lack of time to write currently that it took me 5 days to get these replies written. My point: don't expect an update quickly. Thanks for reading and please be patient.

mole – Congrats on the dibs. You’re so very welcome and I’m glad about the butterflies. Hope you weren’t late to work. I’m glad that you liked the way Faith came off here. I was a littke mixed on her, like what if she wasn’t being concerned enough? But then I just wanted to count on that she knows Willow very well and that they’ve had many many many conversations in the last 3 years about Tara and about how Willow feels about Tara.

This remembrance is simply beautiful.
Thank you.

I would imagine that Willow feels both guilt and pain but mostly as an effect of the events behind the poems rather than the poems themselves. It seems to me that she sees the poems as works of art (sexy and painful ones, but works nonetheless).

With this thought, we get a glimpse into a more grown-up Willow; she's not as selfish and is more considerate of other feelings. Of course, the "ambush" (as her brain insists on calling it) is a wee bit selfish, but really what else could she do?
Oh yeah. I don’t thinks she’s completely grownup yet. I mean showing up at someone’s first book reading? That could be either incredibly sweet or will really ruin the other person’s great day. In this case, it worked out ok but I’d say she’s still at bit on the selfish side.

You’re right: the girls don’t really know that much about each other anymore. They don’t know what’s going on, clothes, friends, accent. But…

Despite the long separation and the fact that they have both changed, these two women have a deep history and still know each other. It's truly beautiful.
Very much so and thank you.

I think the last one. I wrote the update from Willow’s pov very intentionally and I feel sure that if we had seen Tara’s pov, she would have been a semi-nervous wreck.

Given that we only get a yearly look at them, I guess we'll never really get to see this interaction from Tara's point of view. Sigh…Can't wait to see if the next year sees them truly back together or still struggling on the road to reconciliation.
TBC :grin
caz – Thanks so much. Wow, tears? Cool. I mean not cool that I made you cry but cool that I brought you some emotion. I think that Willow’s waiting at the bookstore shows her seriousness and determination but it’s also a little of a nerdy thing to do. I mean she’s in a town she doesn’t know—what better to do than hang out in a bookstore?

They will definitely talk…

Thanks.
notl33t – Hi. Yep, alone will be good. I will give that much away. Lol: smut… Thanks about Faith. I love Faith (as I’ve said repeatedly and repeatedly) so I’m glad that you’re liking her. I think your characterization of her as an anchor is a very good one.
BTW, the RPS International Championship is being held in Toronto this year . . . 3 months after Amber is there, coincidence? I think not).
That’s hysterical. There’s an RPS championship? Wow, who would have thought? I can’t believe that there’s a championship for such a luck-based game.

You’re right that much is unresolved and that Tara’s stutter return isn’t a good thing but it might not be bad either. She may just be very nervous and caught off guard. Thanks so much.
Katez0r – Hey, life is very important. Thanks for reading even if you can’t get to feedbacking. I totally understand how that goes. I’m glad that the update got you emotionally: that means it worked. Thanks so much.
sacinema – Hi. Yep, heart-rending. That’s me.
It's so Willow not to notice the dedication.
God, I’m so glad that people are buying that explanation. I have to say that I planned the end of this update from back at about part 2 or 3. And I’ve been sort of in love with the idea of it all along. Then I was nearly done writing the update and I suddenly thought about it and was like, “Is it even vaguely believable that Willow didn’t read the dedication?” I had to count on Tara’s statement that Willow never did and the kindness of my readers to make it work. Thanks for saying that it did.

I totally agree with you about time healing and still think that they have some things to work through. Thanks so much for your comments.
Hers Always – Thanks so much. Glad you found it emotional and heart-wrenching and emotional and that you liked the rock, paper, scissors part. Thanks.
mole – I think your thoughts about what went wrong are very interesting. I guess in a way, once they knew that they both wanted each other, that became their main focus—almost as if they would have been better off being unrequited for a longer period of time. I’ll have to think about that.

Awesome observations. I hadn’t thought about it and it’s an interesting idea that they are more interested in sex than other ways of spending time together. I wonder if this is the first time a Kitten has ever thought that W/T were too sexy/sex-focused. Tee hee.

don't skimp on the smut when you get them back together
See, that’s what we hear from Kittens more frequently…

You’re so welcome. Thank you for the feedback.
Thianne – Ha ha about copying Sally’s lists. I like it. Nope, no fight and yes to publishing. Like I said before, I’m no poet and not about to become one. That said, if anyone would like to take a shot at writing poems for any of Tara’s titles, please help yourself and post them here in the thread or link to Inward Eye-whatever you’d like.

i think it's just too sweet that tara dedicated her book to willow....so in love, still, after 3 freakin' years
Very much so.

Well, Tara hasn’t been keeping any secrets from her friends about Willow or what Willow means/meant to her for all that time so someone as close to her as Gay was easily able to recognize Willow.

Thanks so much.
Justin – Hey there. Lol about Lost and MT. I got so far behind on watching Lost that we gave it up for the year and will catch up when they come out on DVD. Thank you.

I liked Willow calling Faith at two in the morning. It's not surprising that once she'd decided to find Tara she would want to get started on it right away.
I’m not sure I’d see it as that rational a decision. I think she called her out of upset and worry and the dark hour of the soul, etc.

Totally agreed about Willow reading Tara’s writing. I think that her not doing it prior to that day was a little of her version of that Willow-diet Tara was on the year before. I’m lol about the judge and RPS.

Thanks.

So I was just about to post "Can we have an update to Menorah Tales?

"Can we, JustSkipIt?"

And then you updated. Heh. I crack myself up.
Wow, man. We must be like, you know, like cosmically connected and stuff…

Ok, not really figuring it out but give yourself some credit. If people think you’re brilliant, then you are: perception is everything. Tee hee.

Hmmm Tattered Covers sounds quite cool (and someone later in the thread agrees to that’s kind of cool). I totally agree that it was bold and probably quite stupid and inconsiderate for Willow to show up. I think she was obsessed, desperate, and hoping and praying that it went well and that Tara took it as support rather than being there to ruin her big day.
What spurred her to it, do you think?
I’d say three years of regret and loss and love.

Great analysis of the way people change and grow and how we have to adapt our concepts of them to really know them. Thanks so much.
Dianneswillowtree – Thanks so much. Again tears and I like it. Thanks so much.
Willow~Rosenberg – Awww. More mush. I like it.
Since I just met Amber this past weekend, I can totally picture this.
How cool!
Thanks so much for your thoughts and the linking of the inclusion of the just skip it speech.
Dianneswillowtree – Lol!!!!
db – Thanks so much. I’m glad you liked the poem titles and that you don’t expect me to write them. Ha ha. I saw that movie once but I don’t remember it very well. I feel like it made me sad but I can’t remember anything else about it. Interesting association though.

We’ll see about next year. Thanks.
WillowRulez
I usually try and only comment on stories which don't get as much feedback.
That’s so cool. I mean I love feedback but if you’re kind of pacing your feedback to the stories with less feedback, that makes perfect sense. Thanks for commenting this time though.

I think a big part of Tara’s growth is about her writing and her writing is largely about her passion and pain. So it makes sense that she’s worked through a lot about Willow without getting over her.
The situation with 'The curve of your hip' kinda reminds me of when Willow first came to the alternate reality in Paths diverged / divulged and everyone already knew about her because of Tara's paintings.
I totally get that and was honestly kind of worried about just that association. I was also concerned that Willow’s hanging out at the bookstore seemed too much like Paths D/D before she goes and sees Tara. I’m glad that it worked though.

Can't wait for the next update and maybe the talk? Or will the next one by a year later again?
These will always be a year apart…
spells42 – I think that you have left feedback but thank you so much. I like your analogy about the chocolate. I hadn’t thought about it but that’s a bit of what it was like to be writing this update too. I knew where it was going but it was just so fun writing it and writing it entirely from Willow’s pov (knowing the last line) that I wanted it to go very slowly.

I’m not sure that Tara thinks Willow should initiate as much as she just doesn’t know if it’s time to do so. Keep in mind that as far as Tara knows, Willow is in a relationship. She hasn’t asked Faith anything about it so all she knows is that Willow is academically successful. I agree that both women have matured immeasurably (how could they not?). Thanks so much.
Fleiss – Thanks so much.
mole – Lol.
ZenMe – Hi and welcome. Zen? Awesome. Thank you so much for your effusive praise. I really appreciate it and I’m glad you like the writing.
PS. I"m currently rereading Paths D/D...it makes me happy.
Thanks. I alternate between rereading that fic and rereading Survivor: Ash Island.

Thanks and welcome to delurking.
WillowRTaraM1 – Thanks so much.
SallyMcFine – La la la… I’ve been reading a book about Sally lately. Actually two books about Sally. In the first she has no lines but in the second, she definitely thinks the cat should not go in the house, let alone take a bath while eating cake.
watty
I suppose it's general unfamiliarity with the Jewish calendar as well as Thanksgiving not being a date of note in my world.
Hmmm, well, I’m not going to let the Jewish calendar thing go since Friendly Friends was part of Fruitcake but I didn’t really consider the Thanksgiving thing when I expected you to get it. So, ok.

You built the suspense slowly yet sustained it throughout the chapter.
Thank you. That’s precisely what I was going for so I’m glad it worked. I totally think that making the first move admits that she was wrong (or at least that she knows she was partially wrong).

I think that Tara’s in a very unique position in terms of her ability (or lack thereof) to shelter or hide any part of her soul from those around her. It happens that her vocation and avocation require a sort of relentless truth and passion. She’s not a writer of fiction and while some/many poems can be fictional, it happens that hers don’t tend to be so. I can imagine her writing to be an exhausting and very truthful process and one that her close friends would be very involved in.

Before I read the dedication, I had a notion that everything Tara wrote in that book was for Willow. Then I read the dedication, and I decided that everything Tara wrote in that book was for Willow.
Nice spot. I seriously considered that response. That she would say something like, “everything in here is for you” but I was concerned that since there were poems that really showed the pain and suffering she (and both of them) had experienced, it wouldn’t seem “forgiveful” enough. Whereas I felt like the dedication was more in relation to the accomplishment of publishing her first book and the passion that went into it, as well as letting Willow know how much she meant to her.

Um, nothing for me to spot this time I hope?
I can’t think of anything else.
Wolfy_willow – Lol: work and sleep. Thanks so much. I’m glad you’re enjoying it all.
DelWhicker – Thanks so much. Yes, Tara definitely has good friends. I think she’s the kind of person who is able to hold up both ends of a relationship very well: both giving and accepting support and humor.
Both girls are making their mark on the world. I could get bonked on the head for saying this, but maybe this separation was the best for both of them. Would either one of them have gotten as far as they got if they were anchored in Sunnydale?
I think that’s a very valid attitude and I probably agree with you.

Nice suprise with Olivia bartending at the pub.
Finally someone mentions Olivia!

Thanks re: nervousness. Glad you liked the dedication and the entropy speech. I have to admit that I put that in there as a bit of a snide remark. I mean, I’m all for the skipping it (see my screen name afterall) but it always struck me as a bit cheap on the writer’s part. I mean it was like, “Hey. This a plot point we need to get to so let’s just do this really quick and then move on…”

Although, I'm sure it has something to do with Tara's chosen Literary vocation, because how much soul searching can be done in a lab with science and mathematics?
That’s kind of what I was saying to Watty above but you did a very good job of it. However, I certainly think that people can grow and learn and love no matter what their area study may be.

Thanks.
Artemis – Very definitely two people who have never stopped loving each other but who had to go around some things to get there.
But Tara... that dedication really put the seal on it: all her personal success, the independent, glorious person she is now, is still all about Willow at heart.
Very ewll put.

And okay, the next chapter will be a year later, so we won't actually be able to see hot make-up sex, but perhaps there's the prospect of hot insert-purpose-here sex anyway?
You’re thinking that I haven’t thought of that???

Thanks so much.
Emms – Awww. You’re like me liking the kid. Thanks.
daiailun – Wow I feel like I owe you feedback on your feedback. You put everything so incredibly beautifully.

I’m glad that you’re enjoying Tara and her growth. It’s quite fun to write her. Good luck on the dating other people thing: see KB/DCP FAQs. Wow, you like the time lapse between posts? Hard to believe but I can definitely accommodate you on that one. Tee hee.

I like the example you give about RPS: it’s a common language, a common experience that they’ll always have.
And, see, this is what I like about your writing, too. I don't think you cloud it with extemporaneous and superfluous things. I think you're very skilled at controlling stories, guiding us through the twists and turns of some very creative plots, without them ever seeming contrived. Your earlier emphases on Tara's love of the book as a creation and Willow's love of the words as knowledge came into its own in the last scene when Tara opened Willow's copy, and gently, but knowingly, reminded Willow that she never reads the title page.
Wow. I don’t really know what to say except thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thank you so much for everything you have to say.

And thus the mondo catch up session commences.

G'day, Debra. Sorry for the delay in feedback, but I've been adopting a strict procrastination regime lately. Why do it now, when you can do it way too late? :p

Maybe it's just me, but why do people feel the need to put a coffee shop in a bookstore? The space could be put to a much better use: namely, more books! Then again, I don't drink coffee, so I might be biased. :p

So, Willow was at the bookshop the day before as well. That is seeming mildly stalkerish, especially since she had no idea as to the type of reception she might receive.

Willow's dream was a nice nod to Tara's lines from the end of Entropy, that gave birth to your own screen name. It was a nice touch to spin them around and attribute them to Willow.

But this wasn’t a dream. It was reality and reality meant that there were things to work through.

Then you have this, which is a nice way of thumbing your nose at the same speech. Yes, they do have a lot to work out, and yet, they don't really seem to have done any of that by this chapter's end. Everyone seems to assume that they're back together, and quite possibly going to jump in the sack together after we fade out.

But they're not together, are they? Just as they never really had the brake up, they haven't had a proper reconciliation. They had a nice talk, and there was no bitter recriminations or anything like that, but I think they still need to hash things out, or they might just end up where they were again.

Having Willow note the small differences between the Tara that she knew, and the Tara of the present was a nice and subtle way of illustrating that they really don't know who the other person is any more. They've been apart for ... what three years, in which time they've barely spoken, so that's to be expected.

The image of Willow and Grace playing rock, paper, scissors for Tara's hand was too cute. And that final bit, with Tara pointing out the dedication, was both heartwarming and laughter inducing. Trust Willow to skip straight to the actual content, without reading the introduction. I'm often the same way.

Splendiferous job, Debra!

Cheers,
Paul.

Hello! :wave

I had to read the update twice 'cause the first time my heart was beating so fast I couldn't concentrate on anything else. I was literally at the edge of my seat during Tara's reading and found myself shedding a few tears at the end of it. You know? When you realize salty water's trailing down your cheeks but you're not crying?

Your writing is powerful. It involves the writer to the core and even though it's angsty and sometimes nerve-wrecking (re: the slow pace at which things are moving between them...not that i'm complaining) it is somewhat pleasant in the end.

I stand up and bow in Willow's direction for having the guts to admit that she couldn't stand it any longer (to herself and to Faith) and for going to San Jose. I don't think of it as an ambush, in fact I thought it was considerate and utterly sweet. It is Tara's first book after all.

I wonder what it must be like to have someone write something about you and have the world to read it. Or listen to it if it is a song. It must be wonderful...was that what Willow felt?

They've both gone a long way since they last saw each other, that's for sure. Tara's grown and Willow is more mature, more...um...dunno...over herself? It was nice to see the change.

The end. What a fabulous way to end the update. And it wasn't an easy task, considering you had to maintain the intensity level you had achieved through out the chapter. Kudos to you, Debra. Once again, a terrific job.
