New fic: Just Breathe {UPDATED!!! 8/15}

Postby SakuraEtsuko » Tue Aug 09, 2005 10:21 pm

Title: Just Breathe (the songfic part)

Author: SakuraEtsuko AKA Karen

Feedback: In the name of all that is holy YES! Pleeaaaassseeeeee!!!

Rating: this is PG13…upcoming updates to get racier though ^_^

Disclaimers: I don’t own Willow, Tara blah, blah, blah Joss does…damn him. And the song “Breathe” by Faith Hill I only borrowed, as well as the conversation from BTVS. However all original characters are my own creation and any resemblance of them and any living, dead or fictional people is coincidental. ^_^

Distribution: This is only for pens and my sites….please don’t take or reproduce.

Acknowledgements: To my wonderful beta Sarah aka Oracle of Magic!! Without whose help the fic would not exist! And I would never know Willow’s true hair color! And also to marina for her helpful hints and advice!

Summary: This is a song-fic of Willow and Tara, who are captured, and facing seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Notes: This is an introduction to the rest of the fic that’s up and coming… the rest will be non song-fic still on this thread. Now it may take a while…but I solemnly promise a happy ending for all! (Well at least W/T…anyone else is a guess to everyone! ^_^ ) DO NOT WORRY W/T WILL BE OK!

Note 2: Ok...now I know that they don’t really speak English in the Sudan, but as I don’t speak Arabic and I don’t think most kittens do either...lets all play pretend! We’re in the Karen-verse where people speak different languages, but to the reader it all looks and sounds like English! K? K!

Note 3: Disclaimer of Facts There is a disclaimer of facts, with some information about the conflict in Sudan, specifically Darfur, where the story does take place at the bottom of the page, please do read…and I hope I have not offended anyone with my fic!

To Mods: Discussed this with bytrsuite in Kitten chat…got the okay.

Tara tightened her grip around her love, holding her close to soften the jarring blows of the rickety cage they were trapped in. Her eyes were glued to the pale face of her soul mate, her Willow. Her senses barely registered the strange dialect and crude gestures of their captors. As she ran her fingers through Willow’s soft auburn tresses, she shook her head and thought to herself, “Why Willow? Why?”

She closed her eyes, remembering their capture, Willows bravery, and the consequences of her love’s rash actions.

“The two women were walking along a dirt path, holding hands and smiling at the tiny black kitten darting through their legs comically, looking as though it meant to trip them. Willow smiled as Tara stumbled and she caught her in her arms.

“So you and Miss Kitty are working together huh?” Tara asked saucily.

“Yep. She’s my little accomplice!” Willow replied, sticking her tongue out at Tara.

“Watch where you put that tongue missy!” Tara replied as she caught the tongue between two quick fingers and gave a short tug.

“Mffercy Mffercy!” Willow tried to say, throwing her hands up in the air.

Resuming their leisurely walk, the two women again joined hands. Neither wanting to disturb the peaceful quiet they walked on silently for quite some time when Willow unexpectedly said, “Tell me a story.”

“Okay. Once upon a time, there was, um ... a kitty. She was very little, and she was all alone, and nobody wanted her.”

“This is a very upsetting story!” Willow cried.

“Oh, oh, but it gets better,” Tara replied.

The kitten ran between the two women, mewling loudly.

“'Cause one day the kitty was running around in the street and a man came, and swooped her up…”

A pair of hands reached down and swooped up the kitten.

“And took her to the pound.” Tara finished, tickling the squirming kitten. “And at the pound there were lots of other kitties, and there were puppies, and some ferrets…”

“Were there dolphins?” Willow interrupted, smiling.

“Yes. Many dolphins at the pound,” Tara replied, smiling as she handed the kitten to Willow.

“Did the kitty get chosen by some nice people?” Willow asked, snuggling the kitten.

“Well…now you ruined the ending.” Tara said, rolling her eyes and laughing.

Willow smiled at Tara handing her the kitten and sighing softly.

“What’s wrong sweetie?” Tara asked.

“Nothing!” Willow told her excitedly, “That’s the thing. I’ve never been this happy in my entire life as I am at this moment with you.”

Tara blushed and smiled upon hearing this, and looking down at the purring bundle in her arms steeled her courage and said, “I…I love you Willow”

Willow’s heart soared at hearing those four words and as she opened her mouth to respond-

“AAAAAAAAAAAH! Please don’t take him! Please leave him be! He’s only a child!” A young woman screamed helplessly at the men in garb of the Janjaweed warriors.

The tall Arab sneered at the woman and replied, “All citizens of the Sudan know the price for stealing!” Looking over to his men the Arab told them, “Hold her down while I teach this young ruffian a lesson he won’t soon forget!”

The boy cowered away from the man but was dragged forward nonetheless, his arm placed on the table as the Arab grabbed a large knife and fixed a look of twisted pleasure on his face.

“NOOOOOOOOO!” the young Sudanese mother of the child yelled. “Please have mercy!”

The Arab turned to her and said, “There is no mercy for your kind peasant whore! Shut your mouth or the consequences will grow! He knows the laws of the Janjaweed!”

Running round the corner, Willow glanced at Tara and the two almost lovers shared a small nod.

“Stop!” Willow yelled, “I wont let you do this to a child!”

“Shut your mouth foreigner! These are our laws, and our people will never submit to learning *your* ways!” The Arab replied.

Tara snuck up behind the two men holding the young mother and before either knew what hit them, she conked them over the head with a large rock she had picked up nearby. Then raced with the mother to support her love in her crusade for mercy and compassion.

“But these latest peace talks are all about helping your country find peace! And helping the groups to live together, to prosper under a government system mutual to all!” Willow earnestly said.

“Blah, blah, blah…These treaties do not affect MY people, and we will never agree to it!” The Arab screamed back.

“Well I wont let you do this.” Willow replied as she executed a perfect flying spinning back kick, knocking the tall Arab man unconscious. She rushed the shaken boy to his mother, urging them to leave the village square.

Willow whipped her head around to gaze into the eyes of her beloved, to now utter the words she had failed to before, “Ta-” Tara’s eyes widened and Willow sighed as she stopped mid-sentence, and turned around to find the Arab man had risen, and had somehow called in ten or fifteen more burly looking men as reinforcements.

“You will pay for interfering in Janjaweed justice, foreigner!” The Arab yelled as he and his fellow marauders drew their guns and approached towards the two women.

Although Willow couldn’t see Tara’s face she sent a silent prayer to any Gods above to protect the woman she loved as her world tumbled into darkness.
*****************************************************************************
Willow awoke some time later, shaking her head to clear away the grogginess, and discovered that she and Tara were slung over the back of a horse, tied down in the most uncomfortable positions imaginable.

“Tara. Tara baby c’mon wake up,” Willow whispered to the blonde as she nudged her with her elbow, trying to find a way loose.

“Owwwwww,” Tara groaned as she opened her eyes, blinking at the harsh light after being entrenched in a world of darkness for nearly five hours. “Willow, where are we?”

“Shhhhh,” Willow hissed as she twisted and turned, finding a weak spot in the knots of her ropes. She angled her body so that she could reach Tara, patted her gently on the arm before returning to finding a way out of the jam SHE currently had them in. Sighing, Willow eased her way out of the ropes, grinning as she remembered all the training sessions with Buffy saving her butt, as per the usual.

“Tara, I’m untying your ropes, now, when I say I want you to jump from the horse and start running…just keep running and don’t stop, I will follow you as soon as I can.” Willow fervently told her love.

“I won’t leave you!” a passionate plea.

“Shhhh...don’t worry,” a grin, “This is me we’re talking about!”

“How could I forget?” Tara remarked sarcastically as she rolled her eyes in frustration.

As the travelers reached the banks of a rushing river, Willow whispered to Tara as she flung herself into an upright position onto the horse, “Go! Now!”

Her breath coming in short heaving gasps, Tara swallowed her nervousness and started running towards the jungle as fast as her legs would carry her. Obeying Willow, she willed herself to run onward, not looking back at the peril her soul mate now faced.

Willow, after breathing a sigh of relief at the escape of the blonde doctor, turned to the marauders, who were just noticing the escape of the other woman, and let out a mighty roar as she raced past them towards the river. She never saw the man coming to the left, never heard the swish of the club before it connected with her skull, and felt no pain as she fell into the river, unconscious, her body falling into the murky depths.

Tara, as if commanded by a sixth sense, turned at that moment and seeing her Willow fall, screamed and ran towards her; and the raging river. Willow’s unconscious body continued on downstream, and as one of the Arabs pulled Tara onto his horse in front of him. The rest of the mounted men rode downstream to retrieve Willow, or, they thought as they chuckled amongst each other…whatever was left.
************************************************************************
After that, the men had dumped Willow’s unconscious but thankfully still breathing body into Tara’s lap, and thrown both women into a creaky rusty cage in the back of a covered wagon. Tara looked at Willow once more before squeezing her eyes tightly against the tears that threatened to spill from eyes. Struggling to maintain her composure she continued stroking Willow’s cheek and whispering sweet nothings in her ear.

Tara thought back to happier times, and with a sense of regret, wondered what would’ve happened if both of them had followed through on their feelings sooner. She was angered at possibly losing the chance to spend the rest of her life with her newly discovered soul mate.

Opening her eyes, seeing only Willow, she noticed her breathing growing shallower, and casting furtive glances about, made a decision as she opened her mouth and:

“I can feel the magic floating in the air,
Being with you gets me that way,”

Tara’s entrancing voice floated over to the men on horseback as they cocked their heads and listened intently to the strangers song.

“I watch the sunlight dance across your face and I’ve
Never been this swept away.
All my thoughts just seem to settle on the breeze,
As I’m lying wrapped up in your arms.
The whole world just fades away the only thing I hear,
Is the beating of your heart.”
Tara smiled to herself as she pulled

Willow closer and images ran through her mind as she sang to her fallen love.

A picnic lunch for two. Two women dancing to their own music by the river. A beautiful redhead feeding a blonde grapes in a sensuous manner. Two sets of eyes, lost in each other as darkness falls, and the moon rises. Two hearts near each other, gazing at the stars and making up funny names for constellations.

“And I can feel you breathe,
Its washing over me,
And suddenly I’m melting into you.”

Images of times past continued to float through Tara’s mind as she choked back tears and continued serenading the unconscious woman in her lap.

The doctors working side by side healing the children of a small village. Delivering twin babies to a proud young mother. Gathering the children round and acting out stories of ancient battles and loves. Dropping into their beds next to each other at the end of the day, exhausted, yet more fulfilled and at peace than the day before.

“There’s nothing left to prove,
and baby all we need is just to be,
Caught up in the touch,
The slow and steady rush
And baby isn’t that the way that loves supposed to be?
I can feel you breathe….
Just Breathe”

Tara’s lovely voice had stopped the men in their tracks, and all of them now stared openly at the woman pouring all of her heart and soul into her song.

A first kiss. A second kiss. Struggling to catch their breaths. The doctors running holding hands in the jungle, frightened of the beast chasing them, but each indescribably happy to have finally found hope and love in the other. A hasty retreat to the medical compound, and wounds being examined by fellow members of their team, yet their eyes only saw one another.

“In a way I know my heart is waking up
As all the walls come tumblin' down

The redhead holding the blonde doctor close as she cried her eyes out, revealing the years of abuse and torture at the hands of one she had loved. After a recent attack which triggered memories, the redhead held the younger blonde close all night long, stroking her head and cuddling against her. A new cure found to keep the nightmares at bay.

“Closer than I’ve ever felt before,
And I know, and you know,
There’s no need for words right now.”

Tara’s eyes fluttering open the next morning, looking into bleary emerald eyes, eyes that had remained open throughout the night, protecting and keeping her safe from her own demons. Two sets of eyes never torn away from the other, Two hearts, beating together as one.

“And I can feel you breathe, it's washing over me
Suddenly I'm melting into you”

Tara running onto the scene of yet another attack from government troops, at the heels of the Sudanese Liberation Army, running to get to her Willow. Seeing Willow cowering over the battered and broken bodies of the mothers, children, and the elderly.

Racing to Willow’s side and pulling her into her arms to protect her from all the horrors of the world. Willow’s bloody and scratched face staring blankly ahead. A moment when nothing could reach her.

“There's nothing left to prove, baby all we need is just to be
Caught up in the touch, slow and steady rush
And baby, isn't that the way love's supposed to be”

A kiss and a gentle smile from Tara pulling Willow away from the darkness. Later on, Willow, bandaged and patched, laying in Tara’s arms, knowing that there could still be good in this world. Two chests rising and falling in sync.

“I can feel you breathe”

As Tara began to finish the song, Willow’s body abruptly lurched into convulsions. Tara, frightened out of her mind, held Willow down as best she could, the song forgotten as she tried to use her mind to will her love out of the jerking spasms.

The Janjaweed riders came over curiously, not affected by the redheads death or survival, but drawn to the scene like moths to a flame.

All of the sudden Willows stopped convulsing, stopped moving, stopped…breathing.

“Oh no, oh no, oh no…” Tara muttered to herself, and leaning over began to perform CPR on the woman she loved. “C’mon Will, its gonna be ok, you can do it…”

“C’mon Will, breathe! BREATHE damnit!!”

Frustrated, Tara continued chest compressions, counting feverishly and working furiously to save Willow. As she pulled away from Willows mouth to begin the next set of compressions, her eyes widened as a Janjaweed rider approached….

“Just Breathe……”

TBC

****Disclaimer of fact
“Darfur is situated in the West of Sudan. For a number of years it was the scene of sporadic clashes between farming communities such as the Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa, and nomadic groups, which led to many deaths and the destruction and looting of homes. The government blamed competition over scarce resources for the clashes.

In February 2003 a new armed opposition group, the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) took up arms against the government, because of what they perceived as the lack of government protection for their people and the marginalisation and underdevelopment of the region. The support base of this armed group came mainly from the agricultural groups in the region. Shortly afterwards another armed group, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) emerged.

The government of Sudan responded by allowing free rein to Arab militias known as the Janjawid (or Janjaweed) (guns on horseback) who began attacking villages, killing, raping and abducting people, destroying homes and other property, including water sources and looting livestock. At times government troops also attacked villages alongside the Janjawid, and government aircraft have been bombing villages sometimes just before Janjawid attacks, suggesting that these attacks were coordinated. The links between the Sudanese armed forces and the Janjawid are incontrovertible, the Janjawid are now wearing uniforms provided by the army.”

DIBS!

*bounces back*

Holy shit. That was... intense. I'm hooked already, strapped into the rollercoaster of angst I'm sure you're going to take us on with this. Parts of it made my heart flutter, other parts made my stomach lurch. Wow... considering that it wasn't actually that long, it's packed with emotion.

Exceedingly well written. Can't wait for more!

Note: And a big round of applause for our leading lady of this fic…MEGAN!!!!!

Part 1

Megan closed her eyes and sighed, trying to fight against the torrent of emotions threatening to break free as she gathered the files of the members of Team Sudan five. The fifth team of happy, caring people to be sent to the middle of a war zone. Team Sudan four had recently returned to the states, and after checking in at the MSF, (medicines sans frontieres, otherwise known as Doctors Without Borders), headquarters, they had been five team members short, lives she felt partly responsible for losing. It wasn’t always easy being Director of Operations in the LA office, as she sent young people often to early graves.

Shaking her head from her musings, she once again laid out the files in front of her, trying to familiarize herself with the names and faces, to show these people so willing to go out and risk their lives that someone cared about them.

First on the list, Tara Maclay, a native of Southhampton, England, and an OBGYN. She was an expert in her practice, and spent her free time volunteering at the children’s hospital and soup kitchens. She also had acquired some veterinary skills, and had been trained in the art of Tae Kwon Do. Megan quirked her eyebrow as she read the last line, and thought, ‘Hmmm, a sister then.’

Next, Willow Rosenberg , a pediatrician from Los Angeles California, who had turned in her application 25 days early. Megan smiled as she read over this doctors resume, noting the same overachiever quality that she possessed flying out at her as she read over Willow’s accomplishments. A key player in the Human Genome project, Willow had graduated UCLA with top honors, with pre med and biochemistry degrees. Megans eyebrows flew up over her hairline and her jaw dropped slightly as she read on. Willow had gone to medical school at UC while earning her masters in biochemistry, and while she was serving her residency in the ER, she obtained a PHD in biochemistry, allowing her free reins to work where she chose. She had done labwork with some of the top pharmesuetical companies, but her passion was children and she had eventually gone on to open her own family practice, specializing in pediatrics.

“Wow”, Megan muttered to herself as she reached for the next file, ‘if only the world had more Willow Rosenbergs’ , she thought as she sipped her coffee and glanced at the clock, noticing that the members of Team Sudan five would be arriving soon for the debriefing.

She flipped open Dawn Summer’s file, noting with some surprise that Miss Summers was a med student. Med students weren’t normally allowed field positions within the Doctors Without Border’s program, but as she read on, she realized there were extenuating circumstances. Dawn had graduated high school two years early, obtained her RN license, and worked as an Registered Nurse while putting herself through college and starting med school. She was also a Physicians Assistant at Willow’s clinic, and had a recommendation from the redheaded doctor, which in large part, explained her presence on the mission.

She quickly picked up Anya Christina Emmanuella Jenkin’s file, a surgeon from New York. She grimaced as she read over the file, feeling that while Anya did have talent and passion for her work, that maybe the woman liked cutting into people far too much.

Faith Spencer’s file was quite interesting as well. An orphan, Faith had been in trouble with the law many times, being shuffled from foster home to foster home, until during high school she had been placed with a Miss Jenny Calender. From the looks of it, Faith started to turn her life around, graduating from high school with honors, and becoming a paramedic/EMT. Faith’s personal section was particularly inspiring, as her foster mother Jenny Calender had been murdered the year before, Faith had hunted down the criminal, a hothead who was known on the Streets as Angelus, and turned him in, dedicating herself from that day to helping people.

Time was really cutting short, and the team was to arrive in moments, so Megan quickly skimmed through the rest, There was Xander Harris, the water and sanitation controller from Boston, Rupert Giles, an infectious disease specialist from London, who, in addition to his incomparable knowledge of infectious disease, knew the culture, and customs of every tribe of East Africa and was well versed in the conflict between races that was in effect now.

Riley Finn was head of security of this mission, and the American commander of the Chadian troops that were to accompany the medical team as they traveled throughout the small villages in the Sudan, were to meet up with them at Nyala, landing place of Team sudan Five.

And lastly, Kendra Faizah Faraji, the daughter of an American woman who had died in childbirth and a Chadian Ambassador. Kendra was a talented diplomat in her own right, who throughout her negotiations and birthright, held citizenship in 8 countries, spoke 22 languages, and was there representing the interest of the Chadian government.

As Megan finished looking over the files, the voice of her secretary, harmony, filtered through on the speakerphone on her desk. “Team Sudan five has arrived Ma’m”

“Allright”, Megan sighed, “Send em’ in.”

She really really hated this part of the job, and felt so guilty when not all the people she sent out came back. At the same time, she knew how important these people were to the world, the ones who initiated change, the catalysts, the generation that would fix the planet instead of harming it more.
*****************************************
One by one, the members of Team Sudan Five entered the room, taking various positions around the room.

“All right everyone, get comfortable, we are going to be here for a little while,” Megan told them all. “First of all, why don’t we introduce ourselves? My name is Megan, and I’m head of operations of the LA office of “Medicines Sans Frontiers,” more commonly called doctors without borders.”

“Once you reach Nyala, my counterpart, Karen, will give you details on where you’ll be staying, a general itinerary, and some details on culture and customs in the area.” As Megan finished up her introduction she nodded to the blonde woman standing against the far wall who blushed at being acknowledged.

“Um, My name is Tara…Tara Maclay, and I am an um…OBGYN,” a soft voice muttered. Tara smiled a half smile at the group, her nervousness evident by the blush on her cheeks and the tremor in her voice. She was tall, blonde, and although she tried to pull herself away from the group, the light inside her shone through, putting a smile on the faces of those around her.

The dark haired woman next to Tara spoke up next, “Hey. Faith. Paramedic,” the woman grunted as she took out a cigarette and began smoking it. Faith was a sex bomb. Plain and simple. She was dressed in revealing clothes, her long silky brown tresses hanging loosely down her back.

She had a tough persona, leaning against the wall nonchalantly as her eyes closely scrutinized everyone else around her. However, if one looked close enough, it was apparent that beneath that tough exterior, was a person who truly cared about other people. She wanted to make a difference, to transform the world into…..something better.

“Pardon me no smoking in here,” Megan said, a look of disdain crossing her face.

“Uh huh”, Faith replied, taking another long drag before putting it out and scowling.

Rupert Giles, more commonly known as Giles, cleared his throat as he stood to speak next. He was the epitome of an English gentlemen, right down to the last cufflink, handkerchief, and knicker.

A tall man with graying hair and thin glasses was next to speak, “Well, good day to you all, I am Rupert Giles, Infectious Disease Specialist from London,” the tall man said, as he began cleaning his glasses, “I am however, well versed in the culture, history and customs of the tribal people of Africa, specifically East Africa-”

“Aw shut it G-man, she asked for an introduction, not a flippin’ election day speech,” Faith shot at him, rolling her eyes.

Chagrined, Giles sat back down on the couch and resumed cleaning his glasses with a bit of a pout on his face.

A tall, thin redhead was next in line to introduce herself, however, she was so caught up in staring at the shy blonde by the far away wall, that she didn’t even realize it until everyone stared at her and Megan cleared her throat loudly asking, “And you are?”

“OH! Willow. Rosenberg that is. Pediatrician from LA. And this here next to me-”,

“Hey. Let the kid speak for herself. What’s yer name kiddo?” Faith asked, quirking her eyebrow.

“I-I-I-I-I…” the tall brown haired girl started, twisting her hands nervously. She looked at Willow with tears in her eyes and Willow simply smiled and nodded at her. “I-I’m Dawn.” she finally got out, breathing a sigh of relief at having gotten that over with.

Dawn seemed to be very nervous about the close proximity of the room, and about having so many people near her, as she nervously cast her eyes about the room, darting from person to person, wall to wall. “I-I-I am a med-med student a-a-at UCLA.” she finished, looking down at her lap, her hands fiddling with her jade necklace as she took deep breaths to steady herself.

“She’s also an RN and physicians assistant at my clinic!”, Willow piped up excitedly, squeezing Dawn’s shoulder supportively.

A tall man in military fatigues was next in line. “Riley Finn. US Marines. Head of security and commander of the Chadian escort.” He gave a short nod as he finished and glanced at the woman next to him.

“Hello. I am Anya Jenkins, surgeon from New York. I just broke up with my cheating boyfriend and am currently on the lookout for another,” Anya stated, smiling widely as she eyed the man sitting on the arm of the couch to her right.

“Well, I’m Xander Harris, from Boston, ya know, I'm a water and sanitation guy, so I'll be helpin the tribal villages on that front. Along with anything else they might need me to do. I’m great at fixing things, ya know,” Xander shrugged as Anya smiled at him with what could only be described as a predatory look in her eyes, leaning closer to him, a smug _expression crossing her face as she angled her cleavage right in his line of sight.

The only person who had yet to introduce themselves was a quiet dark woman, with raven black hair wound in tight braids around her head and skin the color of caramel. Her features were quite bewitching, and she sat somehow more dignified than the others in the room. She had an easy air about her, not snobbish or superior, but she embodied the stance, style, and look of royalty.

“My name is Kendra Faizah Faraji, daughter of Abi Faraji, ambassador of Chad, and direct descendents of the old system of Kings. We are now a republic, but most families in politics, like mine, are descended from those who held power in ancient days.”

“Anyways, I digress. I am here representing the interests of my country in this mission; to examine the needs of the people of Sudan, see where we can do the most good, and if possible, strike some sort of treaty between the rebels and the government,” Kendra bowed her head slightly as she finished, adding quickly, “I look forward to getting to know and working with you all.”

Megan smiled and looked back to her notes before speaking, “Well, I am afraid at this point there isn’t much to debrief about. I am sure all of you got the messages that were sent to your PDA’s yesterday, which summarizes what is expected, and what can be expected by all of you. I am just here to tell you that you all are wonderful, great people, making the sacrifices you are, and I wish you all the best of luck!”

Megan stood and walked to the door, showing Team Sudan five out, giving them all reassuring looks, “Your flight is at LAX in three hours, it’s a private charter jet, and I hope you all have a great time. The pilots, Andy and Marina will meet you at Gate 16 and help you aboard. Again….good luck!”

The members of Team Sudan five exited the room excitedly, some making idle conversation, others deep in thought, but all off to embark upon a journey, a journey that would inevitably change their lives.

Two lone tears found their way down Megan's cheeks, as she mourned for what she knew these people would lose. Innocence, ideals, perhaps even their lives; yet a bittersweet smile crossed her face as she walked to her phone, knowing that it was all worth it in the end. Her fingers dialed a long familiar number and she counted the rings until,

“Hello?”

“Hey sweetie, well, the introductory meetings over, I’m sending em’ to you. This is a great bunch, its what makes this part so hard.”

“Aww…its ok Meg, Ill take good care of them, I’ll prepare them well.”

“Nothing is the same as experiencing it,” a shiver ran through Megan’s body as she finished speaking, remembering her trials on her first field assignment.

“Now, now none of that, we did fine….they will too.”

“I hope so. Call me when they get there hun. Oh….and I look forward to seeing you in two months. Same time, Same place?”

“Same time…Same place”

Meg smiled as she said her goodbyes, and walked to her window, watching Team Sudan five load into a car, and drive off in the direction of the airport. “Polle sana,” she whispered, her fingers touching the glass.

DIBS! Toldja I'd do it ^^

**

Dude. You made Harmony my secretary. That is NOT cool. What's her typing speed, like 10wpm?

Cute intros. Faith's was so very... Faith. Three words and a cigarette. Oh yeah, that's Faith. XD... Tara blushing when she said she was an ob/gyn was absolutely adorable. Willow missing her cue 'cause she was too busy checking out Tara and then rushing to catch up with it, also spot on.

Well done.

...I still can't believe you made Harmony my secretary. I'm gonna get you for that.

DIBS on second oh yeah!
Hey Miss Karen! Wow this is so not what i expected again..but look forward to more updates. Got to say love the character cameos of our dear kitten friends;) Can't help but like how you made our main good guys personalities. Still the same, but yet different for the story, great job.
I'm interested in how your going to portray the villages. Ironically i was watching discovery before chat yesterday on Western African Tribes. I'm wondering how the girls will react to traditions and the boys if they have to adapt or try some of the customs to get the tribes to willingly work with them. I'm very much looking forward to much of your humor and very entertaining story. Coa Miss. Karen!

Oh.. playing docter in a warzone, rather hazardous occupation.

The first part seems to give away some parts of the plot, sort of a flash-forward?? It clearly shows neither Willow nor Tara were properly trained or educted to work in Sudan or any highly hostile place/culture (said training is highly frustrating I can tell you). Tara should have kept running, running back pretty much made Willow's sacrifice pointless :cry :cry Hmm... although cpr was needed so that would have been of the good either... difficult decisions (someone needs to get help eventually).

I did manage *not* to scream at my innocent pc-screen but I so wish somebody had told W/T not to upset the locals or do anything besides providing medical care. Usuaully doesn't end well (idiots don't like being told they *are* idiots).

I admire the work MSF tries to do, but I still think it's way to dangerous to send in medical staff before the situation has been stabilized by trusthworthy forces (army first, medical after that).

Where was Riley anyway during that episode?? Is he going as official US Marine or as hired help ? Were was the entire escort for that matter ?? Somebody needs to kick those thugs-on-horsies were it really hurts.

I do hope Faith changes clothes before going anywhere NEAR Sudan or any such country. Going over there in 'sexbomb' clothes is making yourself a prime target :).

Why does Dawnie stutter so much ? Dawn and Willow obviously know each other, I wonder if that might cause trouble on their trip.

It's interesting that Megan obviously fears that she'll loose people from this team, so she estimates the danger-level as quite high. Yet none of the actual team-members seem to realize how dangerous their situation will be?? That's not nice.

You found an interesting topic to write about, not sure I'll like it but you write the charachters nicely so we'll see were it goes I guess :)

Enough of my rambling...

P.S. I would have thought that Janjaweed (i.e. thugs) would be interested in keeping foreigners alive. They're much more valuable (money) when alive.

P.P.S. The songfic sounds familiar but I can't find the song for it?

Megan: Dude..Harmonys funny!! LOL dont worry we never see her again anyways in this fic. Glad you liked it, I tried to keep most of the characters true to form wiht some few alterations. BTW: did u notice the dialogue at the end of that update? *grins*

Musey: thank! and yes it is interesting to see how the culture shocks the team.

Grimlock: Wow. Such...honest feedback. I like it! lol to adress things separatly...

The first part seems to give away some parts of the plot, sort of a flash-forward?? It clearly shows neither Willow nor Tara were properly trained or educted to work in Sudan or any highly hostile place/culture (said training is highly frustrating I can tell you). Tara should have kept running, running back pretty much made Willow's sacrifice pointless Hmm... although cpr was needed so that would have been of the good either... difficult decisions (someone needs to get help eventually).

the first part yes is meant to be a kinda flash forward.. a glimpse into the heart of the fic. However, WT were educated, lol, i dont mention the actual training in this fic but they do recieve it, however, it all fades from Tara's mind as she sees the woman she loves in danger. sometims your reaction is purely...unthought out? LOL

I did manage *not* to scream at my innocent pc-screen but I so wish somebody had told W/T not to upset the locals or do anything besides providing medical care. Usuaully doesn't end well (idiots don't like being told they *are* idiots).

Again, in next update Willow and the others are educated by, (a kitten we all know and love, im telling u im gonna be famous for my kitten cameos LOL), but again...Can you really see Willow, or Tara for that matter, letting a childs hand get cut off for stealing? even if it is culture? No, their moral code wont let them. And i made them act stupid for a reason...how else would they have gotten captured? lol

I admire the work MSF tries to do, but I still think it's way to dangerous to send in medical staff before the situation has been stabilized by trusthworthy forces (army first, medical after that).

I agree, but try to remember, these people are providing humanitarian aid for those who need it, and the refugees, and people who need it cant always wait until the situation has been stablilized. Also, all these people are volunteers, they ALL asked/agreed to be there.

Where was Riley anyway during that episode?? Is he going as official US Marine or as hired help ? Were was the entire escort for that matter ?? Somebody needs to kick those thugs-on-horsies were it really hurts.

those questions and more will be answered in due time dearie.

do hope Faith changes clothes before going anywhere NEAR Sudan or any such country. Going over there in 'sexbomb' clothes is making yourself a prime target

Again, they learn alot in the next update, and ull see faiths reluctant reaction.

Why does Dawnie stutter so much ? Dawn and Willow obviously know each other, I wonder if that might cause trouble on their trip.

Dawnie stutters so much due to a very interesting plot twist, and me fullfilling a request from a friend, youll have to wait to see on that..but no..it doesnt cause trouble..at least...not how you'd think.

It's interesting that Megan obviously fears that she'll loose people from this team, so she estimates the danger-level as quite high. Yet none of the actual team-members seem to realize how dangerous their situation will be?? That's not nice

they will....they will.

You found an interesting topic to write about, not sure I'll like it but you write the charachters nicely so we'll see were it goes I guess

um. thanks? :ashamed :shock

P.S. I would have thought that Janjaweed (i.e. thugs) would be interested in keeping foreigners alive. They're much more valuable (money) when alive.

Again more will be let on in time. Most of the facts in my story are true...but i do change a few things around. poetic license.

P.P.S. The songfic sounds familiar but I can't find the song for it?

the song is breathe by faith hill :-D

Woah. All I could think reading this is you must have done a lot of research. Which kudos to you I'm all for writers really getting into their writing and making sure it is right. Plus you did an excellent job with introducing the characters. It is fun to see how they all fit into the crew, but maintain their uniqueness. :clap

Yeah, sometimes I feedback before thinking it through enough, was kinda worried about this one actually. It's not your fault but this fic is uncomfortably close to reality, hence the 'dunno if I like it' comment. It's *not* your writing thats at fault!

Oh.. didn't get the hand-cutting of part although in hindsight I should have (was thinking about a couple a belt-whips initially). That does make for a better motivation indeed. One of the many things that makes working in such countries even more complicated and dangerous.

even if it is culture? No, their moral code wont let them. And i made them act stupid for a reason...how else would they have gotten captured? lol

True true, it's just very frustrating

Also, all these people are volunteers, they ALL asked/agreed to be there.

I know, I know... I tend to worry more than the people who actually get to go there (so I'm told anyway ).

I figured that wouldn't make sense yeah. Let's put it this way, I *like* the way you introduce and describe all the scoobies in their MSF roles. I'm just not so sure I'll like the events described in the prologue/songfic. I'm all pre-frustrated and angsty now

the song is breathe by faith hill

Thanks, will look it up.

LOL! no problem i LOVE the honesty! and you know..it is very close to reality, maybe out of some people's comfort zones, and it sometimes get more so, i mean we are talking about a country thats going through civil war basically, culture totally different from our own, and a zillion other bad problems that i cant mention or it will be spoiler for my fic! lol

know, I know... I tend to worry more than the people who actually get to go there (so I'm told anyway ).

im sure that if u were sent there...your bravery would outweigh your worry. :D

lol! well thanks! and i understand what u mean..i didnt like writing some of those events! but dont worry..this fic has a lot of good stuff in it too..i mean heartwarming, good fuzzy feelings!! lol and ur s upposed to be pre frustrated and angsty now..next time will be a much lighter update..LMAO..look for Marina as a guest star!! then things start to get a little heavy again.

BTW: how do u get it to say sakuraetsuko says, instead of quote??

thanks so much for reading and sharing your opinion!

Karen, why didn't you tell me you posted?!?!? ;) Seriously though, wonderful update, I am simply speechless. You have managed to keep everyone in character, while putting them in completely different roles. Xander sounded like he was from Boston, Anya was, well, Anya, Faith, spot on my friend, Willow was great, Tara with the shyness, totally right, Riley the annoying one, :lol LMAO at Harmony being the secretary! I like the way Dawn's acting, I can't wait to see what happens next!

You have obviously done your homework, or research, whatever ya wanna call it. It's truley wonderful, you've managed to capture the horror, and the humanity at the same time. DWB is an amazing group, they are truely some of the kindest people on earth, putting themselves in danger to help others. It's good to see them get propper credit. :clap :clap :clap

Kitten cameos?! :) Sounds great, I'm wondering who's gonna be written in, and in what capacity. It is a real honor to beta this fic, my friend.

Oh yeah, seeing Faith's reaction when she has to change her way of dressing, that will be funny. I completely agree with you about Willow & Tara, there is no way they would let a child be hurt. Even if it did mean putting themselves in danger.

All together, this is one of the most amazing fics I have ever read, bar none. :bow :bow You totally have my interest peaked, please grace us with another wonderful update soon! :flower

Blessed Be,
Sarah

hey karen :wave

oh wow! this is an amazing story...makes me scared a little about it coz instead of the usual monster villains... here, we have actual human beings being monster-like (no offense intended) that exist in RL and are actually doing what they are doing in your fic in RL *shudders at the thought of the boy almost getting his limb cut off*... like grimlock said it is uncomfortably close to reality, but the story is so grippingly well-written that i can't help but read on...

i hold on to your promise of:
DO NOT WORRY W/T WILL BE OK!
so i will tough it out and continue to follow where this story is headed.

good job karen! :clap :clap :clap this is a different take on willow/tara AU that i'm used to reading, but i absolute love it... you wrote it so well that i couldn't help but empathize with the kind of danger they are getting into and what they do it for in spite of... i can practically smell danger in the air... these are things that doctors without borders go through every single day just to be able to provide some form of service to victims of ignorance and poverty, and i absolutely commend them for it :bow :bow :bow they are heroes of the new world!

i'm so happy to hear that an update will be upon us soon! yey to that! :party :party :party can't wait! soon please!
