White Dove (updated 11th December)

Postby kindagay » Mon Jul 18, 2005 8:17 am

Hello kittens :wave

Okay, I know that I've kinda been neglecting The Right Decision lately, but, well, I suddenly got this idea for a new fic so, I've kinda been concentrating on this for a while. I will get back to TRD soon though, & there should be an update in the not too distant future.

& now, without further ado, I give you...

White Dove
Author - Kindagay (Jeanne)
Disclaimer - I own nothing, except my trusty laptop & my imagination.
Rating - pretty much suitable for anyone I think
Feedback - is good for the soul. Any comments/opinions are welcome & appreciated
Setting – AU-ish. There are no vampires or monsters or anything like that & Buffy is not the Slayer. Some events are as in canon, but they’re written my way, so the details will be a little different.
Summary – I’m no good at summaries, okay here goes… A young girl is on the run, she stops off in a small-town café and her life is changed forever (I did warn you that I suck at summaries).

Note – The title White Dove is taken from a song by Starsailor of the same name, which could kind of be an unofficial theme tune for this fic. You can find the lyrics here

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

The tall, dark haired diner owner looked up from the metallic-effect counter top that she had been cleaning as the small bell attached to the door alerted her of the arrival of a new customer.

The girl was young, no more than sixteen years old, though her eyes showed a maturity beyond her young years. Her dirty blonde hair was tied back loosely, with several stray strands hanging free to frame the youngster’s face. Her faded blue jeans were old and worn, with several holes and rips in the knees; they were caked in oil, dried mud and dust, as were her grey t-shirt and over-sized denim jacket.

She walked silently, almost invisibly, towards a corner booth and slung her large green duffle bag onto the red bench-seat, before sitting down and picking up the laminated menu.

“Evening honey, what can I get for you?” The young girl jumped as the cheery voice startled her from her quiet thoughts. She looked up at the middle-aged woman and quietly stuttered her order.
“S-scrambled eggs w-with toast a-and a s-soda p-please.”

The waitress smiled as she jotted down the girl’s request.

“We don’t get many young girls in here, ‘specially not at this time of night. You all alone honey?” The waitress tried to make polite conversation without appearing too nosey.
“I, I’d j-just like some f-food and a, a soda th-thank you.”
“No problem darlin’.” She got the message and left the girl alone.

In her years running a diner in a small town like Sunnydale, Sheila Rosenberg had encountered many different people, each with their own tale. Whilst some were more than happy to share their story, whether you showed any interest or not, there were others, like this young girl, who preferred to keep themselves to themselves.

Whilst Sheila was busy making scrambled eggs, the little bell chimed once again. This time, two teenage girls walked in, one petite blonde and one redhead. They walked straight to the counter, chattering and giggling together, obviously content and comfortable in each other’s company.

“Hey girls.” Sheila called to the teens as they sat down on the tall, padded stools.
“Hey mom.” The redhead replied. “Do you need any help?”
“No, I just got this one order; you can help yourself to a couple of shakes for you and Buffy if you like.”

The redhead bounced off the stool and skipped behind the counter to make two strawberry milkshakes.

“How was the movie?” Sheila enquired as she popped some bread into the toaster.
“It was okay I guess, the ending kinda sucked though, one of the girls ran off with some guy. I really don’t think they should advertise it as a lesbian movie when one of the girls ends up with a guy.”
“Willow sweetie, I’ve told you a hundred times, if you wanna see a lesbian movie with a happy ending, you’re just gonna have to make your own.”
“I will do some day mom, you’ll see. I’ll show the world that lesbians can have happily ever afters.”
“I know you will sweetie, and I’ll be so proud of you.”

“Hey, are you gonna cast me in this big movie of yours Will?” Buffy asked, giving her best million-dollar smile and batting her eyelashes at her best friend.
“Sure Buff, you can be my mentally challenged straight best friend. That shouldn’t be too difficult for you, since it just involves being yourself.”
“Aww, can’t I be your lover?” The petite blonde suggested, putting great emphasis on the word ‘lover’. She then instantly slipped into character, clasping Willow’s hands in her own. “Oh Willow, my darling, I love you so much and I’ll just burst if we don’t have some hot, gay lovin’ right now.” Buffy finished her performance by grabbing Willow’s face in her hands and planting a kiss on the unsuspecting redhead’s cheek.
“Eww, gross, those lips have kissed boys.” Willow exclaimed as she wiped her cheek with the back of her hand. “I have boy germs on me now.”
“Relax Will, it’s not like you’ll turn into one. Although, if you did turn into a boy you’d probably have more luck picking up girls, ‘cos all the ones we know are straight.”
“I don’t wanna be a boy you freak, they’re gross and they can’t kiss properly.”
“How would you know?”
“I kissed Xander once when we were five.”
“That doesn’t count, he was only five. I’ll have you know that some boys are very good at kissing.”
“And you would know; you have kissed every boy at school.”
“Not all of them.”
“Almost all of them, oh, except for that exchange student last year, but that’s only ‘cos Harmony had given him mono.”
“Now that was gross.” Buffy shuddered as she remembered Kristian, the German exchange student, desperately trying to kiss her, despite the fact that he had the ‘kissing disease’.

“Willow, could you take this to the young girl over there please?” Sheila requested of her daughter, knowing that Willow was sure to be able to find out about the young stranger.

Willow’s head whipped around to look where her mother had indicated and saw the beautiful girl fidgeting with a paper napkin.

“She’s pretty, what’s her story mom?”
“Runaway I think, quiet, polite, she’ll probably be looking for a place to stay.” Sheila directed the last comment towards Buffy, whose mother was known for renting out her spare room and having a particular empathy with runaways.

“Okay, let’s go make sure the new lodger’s not a psycho like the last one, I wonder if mom’s recovered enough to rent out the room again?”
“Buffy, don’t scare her off, please.” Willow practically begged her friend, knowing that, despite her small size, Buffy could be very intimidating.
“Okay, I’ll play nice with the hottie. You do know that she’s probably straight right?”
“Shush, let me daydream for a little while before you ruin it.”

Unbeknown to Buffy and Willow, the young blonde had been secretly stealing glances as the two girls had been talking, and she was internally dancing for joy at the fact that the attractive redhead was obviously and openly gay.

“Hi, one plate of scrambled eggs and toast, plus a soda for the pretty girl at table four, my mom even fried some tomatoes for you. She’s good like that.” Willow smiled as her eyes were met with deep pools of endless blue.
“Th-thanks.”

A silence followed as Willow’s speech and motor skills completely abandoned her at the sight of the most adorable shy smile the redhead had ever seen. A quick jab in the back from Buffy prompted the redhead into action; she carefully placed the plate, cutlery and glass of soda on the table in front of the blonde.

“I’m Willow by the way, my parents own this place, and this is Buffy, she’s my best friend, well, my best girly friend anyway, ‘cos I have two best friends, one girly best friend who is Buffy, and one boy best friend, who is Xander, oh, but he’s not here, he’s with his new girlfriend somewhere, probably in his parent’s basement, ‘cos that’s where he lives. What’s your name?” The contrast from stunned silence to uncontrollable babble made Buffy giggle at her friend; as well as easing some of the darker blonde’s nerves.

“I, I’m T-Tara. Uhm, w-would you l-like to join me?” Tara smiled and indicated the bench seat at the other side of the booth.
“Oh wow, yes, I mean, thank you that would be wonderful, uhm, I mean good, it would be very good. Thank you. Are you sure it’s okay?”
Tara nodded and Willow and Buffy slid onto the seat opposite her.

“So Tara, are you planning on staying in good old Sunnydale for a while? Or are you just stopping to eat our food before you head elsewhere?” Buffy made no attempt at small talk, opting instead to establish exactly what Tara’s plans were.
“Buffy.” Willow admonished her best friend before turning back to Tara. “Sorry, just ignore her; we’re still trying to teach her some social skills.”
“N-no, it’s okay, I uhm, I h-hadn’t r-really thought a-about it, uhm, i-it’s too late to uhm, to move on right now so uhm, I, I guess I’ll h-have to find somewhere to uhm, to stay the night. D-do you know a-anywhere? I, I have some money.”
“Are you gonna turn psycho and try to kill us all?”
“BUFFY!” This time, Willow’s reprimand was coupled with a swift kick to her best friend’s shin.
“Ouch.” Buffy pouted at the redhead and then turned back to Tara. “Sorry. My mom rents out our spare room, but, Faith, the last girl we had stay with us, well, let’s just say, she had some issues.”
“She, she t-tried to k-kill you?”
“Willow had a little run in with her; thankfully they teach us self defence at school, so, there was no harm. Right Will?”
“Well, it was kinda, a lot scary when she pulled a knife out on me, but, like Buffy said, there was no harm.”
“A, a kn-knife?” Tara’s eyes widened in shock.
“She wouldn’t have used it, she just wanted to scare me, which you know, she did, but, she didn’t hurt me and I lived to tell the tale so, it’s all okay.”

The sound of tires crunching heavily over stones as a large vehicle screeched to a halt outside the diner interrupted the teenagers’ conversation. Tara glanced warily out of the window and instantly began to panic as she spotted the old, cream coloured camper van.

“I, I h-have to uhm… P-please, d-don’t tell them y-you’ve s-seen me, please.” Tara begged as she stood and frantically searched for somewhere to hide.
“Here darlin’ you come through to the back, Willow honey, hide her bag.”

This wasn’t the first time Sheila had helped a young runaway hide from whoever it was they were running from. As she guided Tara into the staff room at the back of the building, Willow picked up the duffel bag and dropped it behind the counter; whilst Buffy’s idea of helping involved tucking in to Tara’s eggs.

A small, balding, gnat of a man walked through the door followed by a younger, taller and more muscular man. Both were almost literally turning their noses up in distaste as they looked around the diner.

“Hi, can I get you anything?” Willow approached the men and did her very best at being friendly and helpful.

The small man looked down at the youngster as if considering whether or not to lower himself to the youngster’s level.

“I’m looking for my daughter.” The man produced a tatty photograph of Tara and thrust it at Willow.
“She’s a pretty girl, I only wish I could bump into her, sadly I’ve not seen her around.”
“May I speak with your father little girl?”
“Oh, I’m sorry, my dad’s not here, I could get my mom though; if your daughter’s been here she’s sure to have seen her.”

As if on cue, Sheila emerged from behind the counter and introduced herself to the man.

“Good evening sir, I’m Mrs Rosenberg.”
“Mr Maclay, I’m looking for my daughter Tara, has she been in here at all today?” The picture was once again thrust forwards.
“I’m sorry sir; I’ve not seen any youngsters in here, only my daughter and her friends. I shouldn’t worry too much, she looks like she can look after herself, and kids always manage to find their way home once they run out of money. She’s probably there right now waiting for you to get back.”

Mr Maclay took one last look around the eatery before turning to leave. The younger man didn’t follow immediately, deciding instead to impart some words of advice.

“If you do see her, you’d be advised to send her on her way. My sister’s more trouble than she’s worth.”
“Donny!” His father barked at him. “Get in the camper.”

Father and son walked towards the camper van, slammed the dilapidated vehicle into gear and screeched speedily along the road leading out of Sunnydale.

“Well, they were, pleasant.” Sheila commented bitingly. “Willow honey, go and tell Tara that the coast is clear.” She cast her eye over to Buffy, who was just polishing off the last bite of Tara’s meal. “Are you planning on paying for that Miss Summers?”
“Sorry.” Buffy mumbled as she swallowed a mouthful of toast. “You kinda have to rustle some more up for Tara now, don’t you? I’m sorry, I’ll pay, I promise.”
“Don’t worry about it sweetie, it was gonna be on the house anyway.”
“You’re the coolest Mrs Rosenberg.” Buffy grinned, washing down the meal with a large gulp of milkshake.

“Right young lady.” Sheila turned, with hands on hips, to face Tara, who had just returned with Willow. “Now, I’m not one to pry into a person’s personal business, but when a young girl asks me to lie for her, I do appreciate an explanation.”

Tara physically shrank beneath the woman’s glare. Her head dropped forward, and she began wringing her hands together.

“I, I’m s-sorry.” She reached to pick up her bag. “I, I, I d-didn’t mean to, to c-cause t-t-trouble, I, I’ll go, I’m s-sorry.”

In the blink of an eye Tara was gone, vanishing into the night as quietly as she had arrived.

“Mom! Why’d you have to scare her off?” Willow frowned at her mother, grabbing Buffy by the arm and dragging her out of the diner.

“Wait, Willow what are you doing?” Buffy stood stock still, forcing Willow to halt in her pursuit of Tara.
“We have to find her; it’s not safe to be wandering around at this time of night.”
“We don’t know the first thing about her. I know she seems all sweet and stuff but, did the Faith ordeal not teach you anything? She’s just another runaway Will.”
“Okay, I know I gave Faith a lot more leeway than she deserved and I know that that got me into a whole lot of trouble, but I promise Buffy, this is different. There’s something really special about Tara, I can feel it.”
“Fine, but if we end up dead your dad’s gonna kill us.”

Okay, that was chapter one, so, what do you all think? Is it good? Do you all like it? Shall I continue? :paranoid

Yay Jea! That was good. So, sheila runs the diner? :lol That's something I've never seen happen before. :eyebrow And, poor Tara....with her stupid family hunting her down like a pack of rabid wolves...thank goodness that Willow and Shiela were there to protect her. :applause and it's really convenient that they just "happen" to have a spare room that they rent out...That's perfect. I can see visions of lots of Willow/Tara bonding time in the near future. :-D

I love the new story so far sweetie. But please don't forget about TRD....cause I would be sad. :glasses

ETA: Yay! I was the first to reply! I should get a cookie! how 'bout it Jea? Can I have a cookie?? :flirt

This is fantastic! :bounce

I laughed so much at some bits :rofl

whilst Buffy’s idea of helping involved tucking in to Tara’s eggs.

You've managed to combine humour and a plot line that gives the reader genuine concern over Tara. I also love the Willow babble!

More soon? :pray

Hi Jeanne. Please do continue with your story. I always love the ones where Willow and her parents get on well together. Cai i just ask for one thing - please make Mr Maclay and Donnie suffer. I hate these two with a passion.

A very nice start, Jeanne. I hope you will continue this story.

I particularly like the way you've combined canon with a monster-free AU. We seldom see Sheila so sympathetic, and downright folksy. It makes a nice change. At this point Buffy's showing herself lacking in both brains and heart. How can she use words like, "just another runaway," especially after seeing what Tara's running away from?

Well first of all YAY! for Starsailor. What? You thought I was yaying for your new fic? HEEHEE, that's a given, Jeanne. :lmao

What an interesting setup! Interesting that setting it in a diner makes me think of the theatre where the entire play is set in the diner -- just have this feel.

You've captured young Will and Buffy really well. Their teen talk is very ... teen talk. :lol Sheila is kinda different from the academic type in canon, but very approachable and likeable, I like how she instinctively protects Tara, must really have seen her fair share of runaways.

Willow being out, out and out,
if you wanna see a lesbian movie with a happy ending, you’re just gonna have to make your own

is that a hint? that Willow wil become a filmmaker? Ahh, greatness.

But Tara! Don't run away! Willow please catch her, cos it's dangerous and you need to fall in love and give us much smoochies!

Great start :clap and please continue.

Yep, Sheila runs a diner, it was necessary for the story (obviously :) ), no, I've never seen that before either.
Yeah, poor Tara, but now she's found Willow, & Willow will protect her. Of course there's a spare room for Tara to stay in, well, we can't have her out on the street now, can we? :no
Yep, there will be plenty of Willow/Tara bonding soon. :)

Don't worry sweetie, I won't forget TRD, I've kinda hit a wall with it at the moment, so I thought if I concentrate on this for a while, some TRD inspiration might hit soon.

------------------------------
cosmic dancer: Fantastic? :stop well, I don't know about that :blush, thank you :)
I'm glad it made you laugh, laughter is all good :)
You've managed to combine humour and a plot line that gives the reader genuine concern over Tara.
Why thank you, that's exactly what I was aiming for :)
More very soon

I particularly like the way you've combined canon with a monster-free AU.

Watson: I agree, Yay for Starsailor :) They are very good.

Aww, you see my 'play' all set in a theatre? :) Well, it's not all gonna be set in the diner, so, there'll have to be some scenery changes :)
I'm glad you feel that the teen talk was teenager-y :) Yep, a nice Sheila, for a change, & yeah, she's seen plenty of runaways so naturally she'll protect Tara (who wouldn't?).
Hmm, I think it's entirely possible that Willow has ambitions to be a filmmaker.
Don't worry, Tara won't run far & our girls will get to fall in love :) But, :sh, it might be a bit of a bumpy ride

-----------------------------------------
Irene: Hey sweetie :wave *hug*
Aww, this is already one of your fave fics? Thanks, I'm so glad you like it :D

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Whilst Buffy and Willow were debating over whether or not to go after Tara; the blonde in question had run into a spot of trouble.

“You’re a pretty little thing; didn’t anyone tell you that it’s dangerous to be out all alone at night?”

The thin, pale, bleached-blonde man had Tara backed up against a wall in the entrance of a dark alley-way. So far, he had made no signs of violence, but Tara wasn’t keen on finding out whether he would.

“You’re not from around here are you?” He sniffed at Tara predatorily. “You’re not one of the princess’s friends. I’m not allowed to hurt the princess and her friends, but, nobody said anything about strangers. Can I hurt strangers?” The man tipped his head to one side as if listening for a reply, then grinned as he, presumably, heard the answer he wanted. “Yep, I think I’m allowed to hurt strangers.”

He took a lunge towards Tara, forcing the blonde’s head backwards until it contacted the wall behind her with a dull thud. She took a sharp intake of breath and fought to hold back the tears that instantly stung the backs of her eyes.

The welcome brightness of a pair of headlights lit the alley and Tara prayed that the car would stop. Thankfully, the sound of the engine faded and the lights dimmed just a little before the sound of a car door being bumped closed was heard.

“I sure hope you’re not causing trouble William.” Tara had never been more relieved to hear a man’s voice in her life.

Tara’s assailant turned his attention away from his captive, his head turning down and to one side so that his eyes could glance slyly towards the interruption.

“Sorry, little Billy-boy’s not home right now, he let Spike out to play tonight. Did you want to leave a message for him?”
“Why don’t you leave the girl alone? Someone will be missing her and you don’t want to be getting yourself into trouble do you?”
“She smells like your old ladies place, she’s had some of Sheila’s home cooked treats. Now tell me, if the little girl matters so much why would your sweet, caring wife let her run around all alone after dark?”
“I’m sure Sheila didn’t purposefully throw the girl out, you know she’d never do that.”
“Well, we all know that runaways can be very naughty sometimes. Maybe this one’s just like the last one, maybe she hurt your little princess.”
“William, leave the girl alone.”
“William’s not here, it’s Spike’s turn to play.” Spike growled through gritted teeth.
“Go home William.”

Spike’s eyes were squeezed shut as he shook his head vigorously, trying to silence the warring voices in his mind.

Tara had noticed how her attacker’s eyes would soften a little every time he heard his given name.

“William.” Tara forced the name out in a hushed whisper.

Spike’s eyes flew open, a flash of something softening his features, a shy, boyish smile playing at his lips. The previously vicious-looking attacker now resembled a confused, harmless little boy.

“Your mother’s calling you William.” Tara’s rescuer spoke softly, smiling reassuringly at the blonde girl.

“Pretty girls don’t talk to William.” The blue eyed boy actually began to blush, his head lowered timidly. “Sorry, have to go, mother’s calling.” He awkwardly stumbled and ran away.

“I-is he okay?” Tara asked, not fully able to wrap her head around what had just happened.
“I’m supposed to be asking you that aren’t I?”
“Oh, I, m-my head h-hurts a, a little.” Tara raised her hand to the bump that had formed at the back of her head, relieved to find that there was no blood. “I, I’m okay.”
“Good, I won’t have any young girls getting hurt in my town.”
“Y-your t-town?”
“Mayor Rosenberg, you can call me Ira.” The suited man introduced himself, offering his arm to escort the young girl towards a small bench.
“T-Tara.” The blonde smiled as she sat down.
“Don’t worry about William, he’ll be fine.”
“Wh-what’s wrong w-with him?”
“Multiple personality, sort of, William’s harmless, wouldn’t hurt a fly. Spike’s the one you need to watch out for, but he hasn’t hurt anyone since he started taking his medication.”
“What uhm, what j-just h-happened?”
“I’m guessing that your voice sounded a little bit more like his mother than mine. He always reacts better to a soft, female voice; I’ve never quite managed to pull it off.” Ira chuckled, but failed to get a laugh out of the still shaken Tara. “Don’t worry, you’re safe now, but, you really shouldn’t be out alone after dark. Why don’t we get you back to the diner? I’ll get Sheila to make you a nice mug of hot chocolate.”
“N-no, I uhm, I d-don’t… I, I’ve a-already b-been too m-much t-trouble.” Tara stood up as if to run away.
“Oh no you don’t, you know how dangerous it is to run off.” It was no use; Tara was still intent on leaving.
“Have you met my daughter?” Ira took a chance at a different approach.
“Uhm, W-willow?” Tara’s smile was unmistakable, even to Ira Rosenberg.
“You see, if I don’t get you back to the diner completely safe and unscathed, Willow will never talk to me again.”
“I, I d-doubt she uhm, she’ll c-care that m-much.”
“Trust me, I know my little girl, if she’s met you, she cares. Now, are you gonna come with me where it’s all safe and have a nice hot chocolate? Or are you gonna make my daughter hate me for the rest of her life?”
“O-okay. H-hot chocolate s-sounds good.”

Ira and Tara climbed into the car and headed in the direction of the diner.

----------------------------------

In the meantime, Tara’s search party wasn’t having much luck, mainly because they were spending more time arguing than searching.

“She must have gone into the woods Buffy.” Willow insisted as she headed towards the thicket of trees.
“Nobody in their right mind would run into the woods Willow.” Buffy grabbed her best friend by the elbow, preventing the redhead’s journey towards the potentially dangerous terrain.
“She won’t have gone back the way she came, and she won’t have gone in the same direction as her father, her only other options are the river or the woods and the river’s not even really an option ‘cos it’s too deep and the current is too strong.”
“I am not going into those woods Will, I’m sorry, not even if it was to save your life.”
“So you’re just gonna leave her to get hurt or, possibly even killed? I know you’re not that heartless Buffy.”
“Willow, you cannot honestly be considering going into those woods?”
“I can’t leave her. If you don’t wanna come with me, that’s your choice.”

Thankfully, it was at this moment that Ira drove by and instantly realised what his daughter was up to.

“You really think she doesn’t care?” Ira spoke softly to Tara as he stopped the car and pointed to Willow. “You do realise she’s about to walk into the very scary woods to find you right?”
“R-really?”
“I’d bet my life on it honey. You wait here; I’m gonna go and talk some sense into your would be saviour.”

Ira slowly got out of the car and called out to his daughter.

“Willow Danielle Rosenberg you’d better not be about to go into the woods!”
“Uh-oh, busted.” Willow stopped dead in her track and slowly turned to face her father. “I know what you’re thinking daddy, but, but there’s this girl.”
“I only see one girl apart from you and I know that you’re not showing off and trying to impress Buffy.”
“No, I’m not trying to impress anyone. This girl, she was at the diner, and then her dad and brother turned up and she hid ‘cos well, they were just, very unpleasant, and then mom was all mom-like and ended up scaring her off so we came out to find her, but she could be anywhere and it’s all dangerous and I just, I have to find her and make sure she’s okay and take care of her.”
“Willow, princess, calm down.”
“No dad, I can’t just leave her in the woods, I know that it’s dangerous and stuff but daddy, you didn’t see her, she was so scared and timid, and she’s really, really pretty and special and I have to save her.”

Tara, who had wound down the car window and had been listening to the entire conversation, decided that she had better make her presence known before the redhead began to hyperventilate. She got out of the car and walked over to stand a few steps behind Willow’s father.

It took mere seconds for Willow to recognise the blonde, and her myriad of words instantly stopped as Tara’s deep, soulful eyes and shy smile filled her every sense and calmed the rambled thoughts and fears that had been spinning around her head.

“Tara.” Willow breathed out the name, almost as if she feared that any loud sound or sudden movement would startle the blonde away.
Tara gave a small, awkward wave, then quickly looked down, hiding her face.
“Are you okay?”
Tara merely nodded. The blonde was suddenly hyper aware of her stutter and was desperate not to make a fool of herself in front of the wonderful girl who was gazing so intently at her.

“She’s fine, a little bump on the noggin, but no harm done.” Ira informed his daughter. “I was just gonna take her to get some hot chocolate, are you two gonna join us?”
“I’ll never say no to a mug of Mrs Rosenberg’s hot chocolate.” Buffy ran towards the car and practically leapt into the front passenger seat.

Willow and Tara smiled shyly at one another then wordlessly got into the back of the car, stealing timid glances of one another throughout the short journey to the diner.

----------------------------------

Sheila gave a sigh of relief as she saw her husband’s car park up outside the diner and the three young girls climbed out. Willow ran to the door of the diner and chivalrously held it open for Tara to walk through, giving the blonde a cute Willow-grin when she stuttered a shy ‘thank you’.

“Hi darling.” Ira gave his wife a quick kiss in greeting. “I don’t suppose we can get some hot chocolate to calm these girls down after their big dramas?”
“I’ll warm up some milk.”

The girls sat down quietly at the counter while Sheila and Ira made three mugs of hot chocolate.

“So, what adventures have you been getting yourselves into?” Sheila enquired as she dropped some mini marshmallows into the warm drinks.
“We didn’t have any adventure, we were just looking for Tara, but then dad turned up and he’d already found her so we all came back here.”
“Uh-huh.” Sheila raised her eyebrow sceptically and looked to her husband for more details.

“Tara here had a little run in with Spike.”
“What? You didn’t tell me that, why didn’t you tell me that?” Willow exclaimed, reprimanding her father for not sharing this detail. “Oh god, are you okay? He didn’t hurt you did he? You must have been terrified, Spike’s really scary.” Willow’s eyes darted over Tara’s body, searching for any sign of injury.
“I, I’m okay, h-he didn’t h-hurt me.” Tara smiled sweetly at the gently fussing redhead.
“She had a little bump to the back of her head, actually, Sheila can you take a little look at it, make sure everything’s okay?”
“I, I can look.” Willow insisted enthusiastically. “Oh, uhm, can I look?” She asked Tara softly.
“Why don’t you let your mom have a look kiddo? She knows all that fancy first aid stuff.”
“Th-thank you but uhm, r-really, I, I’m fine, i-it doesn’t e-even hurt a-anymore.”
“Okay honey, if you’re sure you’re okay?”
“I, I’m okay.”

Silence reigned as the three youngsters sipped their drinks, a plan formulating in Willow’s love-struck young mind.

“Hey mom, can I stay over at Buffy’s tonight? We can have a girly sleep-over.”
“Oh, yeah that sounds cool.” Buffy enthused, much to Willow’s delight. “We can make popcorn and watch all the chick flicks that Xander never wants to watch.”
“Uhm, that is if you uhm, want to Tara?” Willow turned hopeful, almost pleading eyes to the blonde.
“Uhm, o-okay, yeah, i-it sounds fun.” There was no way Tara could turn down her new crush’s plea.
“Well, seeing as it’s all planned now, I guess it’s fine with me, just, try not to bug Mrs Summers too much.”
“Thanks mom.” Willow slid off her stool and kissed her mother on the cheek. “Dad, can you give us a ride?”

Once again, the three girls climbed into the car and headed towards the Summers’ residence.

I hope the Spike/William stuff made sense, I wasn't sure if I explained it well enough? :paranoid

Yay you updated! :bounce

I think I get the William / Spike thing.

“William’s not here, it’s Spike’s turn to play.”

“Multiple personality, sort of, William’s harmless, wouldn’t hurt a fly. Spike’s the one you need to watch out for, but he hasn’t hurt anyone since he started taking his medication.”

You seem to be telling us that he has a complicated psychiatric condition and may at times believe that he is a vampire (hence appearing to try and bite Tara's neck), when actually he isn't. Is this right?

...a plan formulating in Willow’s love-struck young mind.

So Willow is in love already! That was quick, it must have been pretty much love at first sight. How cute! :x

I look forward to reading the next update, I think the sleepover could be lots of fun! :)

woot! update, yippee!

Less like a play, cos we moved outside of the diner. Love the Spike/William enigma, it's entirely believable. Spike seems to know about William though,
“Sorry, little Billy-boy’s not home right now, he let Spike out to play tonight. Did you want to leave a message for him?”

which is kinda unusual for this type of disorder, but then again a psychiatrist I'm not.

You’re not one of the princess’s friends. I’m not allowed to hurt the princess and her friends

When I was reading, I wondered who princess is, then at the edge of the woods, Ira calls Willow "princess", so can I assume that there is some psychic restraining order working so Spike can't hurt Willow's friends?

Willow, oh Willow, in love already.
she’s really, really pretty and special

I'm amused at how Buffy, Ira and Sheila seems to take that piece of information in their stride, not merely that Willow is falling for a girl (cos it's clear that she's outer than out and they're fine) ... but how quickly she has. Tara has a crush too. Wow, these two are quick. :P

Having a sleepover at Buffy's is a plan to be with Tara? Huh? what about the big lightbulb that is Buffy, unless B is smart enough to stay out of the way :) It'll be a fun sleepover, can't wait for the next update.

Hey, a very good start. I like the way this fic is, for lack of a better word, very full. Your descriptions of everything for the diner, to Tara, to Willow & Buffy are clear and detailed enough to really get a picture in one's head. It's hard to imagine this incarnation of Sheila & Ira but they seem really fantastic. Amazing that they don't seem to worry at all about getting in trouble for helping runaways. You can really get in trouble for that: more trouble than the worthless home the runaway is leaving especially.

It's very cute that Willow and Tara already like each other and that Willow is so out. Can't wait for Tara to get cleaned up and relaxed. Great start.

Hey Jeanne honey,

What do you know? - I actually caught a break from wonky RL to drop you a line in your oh so enthralling thread !! :party :bounce

You already know how superb I think your stories are - but as you know, this one - White Dove - has a very special place in my heart.

I just knew that you'd get cool feedback and lots of praise for this story from lovely kittens and I just had to add my 'voice' into the mix.

This is such a fun feedback thread too!! Kittens rock and so does your totally wonderful fic!!

I'm so glad sweet Tara has found her Willow now, so there won't be anymore Tara getting hurt I'm sure - not if Willow has anything to do with it. Plus Willow has really cool parents in this fic - so I know they will do all in their power to prevent an innocent girl getting hurt by an unworthy family :happy - just like the scoobies protected Tara on the actual show in the episode 'Family'.

Keep up the great work sweetie - my support for your wonderful writing can only get stronger because you just keep impressing me with your talent more and more!! :bow

I like this so far. I didn't really even notice the new fic until today, then I saw it was written by you and I knew I needed to read it. Thus far, my instincts weren't wrong. I like how warm Willow's family is in this fic, normally, they are not mentioned, or not featured in the most pleasent light. That's fine, that's how Willow grew up and it developed her character, but I do like the change. I also like that Willow is openly gay at such a young age and everybody is so accepting (Don't get me wrong, I love me some comming-out stories). Finally, I like the Spike/William thing. It makes sense, and it's a creative way to include Spike in an AU fic and still keep his intese character dynamic. I eagerly await more!

Hi Jea, Sorry I've been a little slow responding to this last chapter...I kinda had a lot going on the last couple days. I know...it's not a great excuse...but can you please forgive me?? *begs* Pretty please with sugar on top?? :ashamed

I loved this last update. And Tara's run-in with Spike, was so intense...and icky. I'm glad that Ira showed up when he did though, and rescued poor Tara before anything more serious than a bump on the noggin occured. Sounds like spike is pretty dangerous.

And how funny was sheila with the warming up of milk? :lol

So, the girls are going over to Buffy's for a little popcorn therapy huh? Sounds like a good plan to me. Maybe there could be discreet handing holding and the brushing of buttery digits amid the popcorn kernals? :x

and sleeping over.............I hope there's only one sleeping bag and they have to share. :lol wait...are they too young to be sharing sleeping bags? yes...I imagine so..in the words of Willy Wonka "strike that. Reverse it." I hope there are two sleeping bags...but not enough space on the floor...so they end up right next to eachother. (There....that's better. )

wonderful update hun. Can't wait for more. (as always, when reading one of your fics. )

xoxo

Hello sweet kittens :wave
How are you all today?

I have big thank yous for you all :flower I also have an update for you, but, that shall come later, after the thank yous :)

----------------------------------------
AlysonGoddess: I'm glad you enjoyed it :) & don't worry, everything will turn out good in the end.

-----------------------------------------
Amanda: Aww, thank you for the woo hoo! :D
I'm not sure Willow is 100% in love just yet, but she's well on the way :x
You'll find out about the sleepover very soon :)

------------------------------------------
cosmic dancer: I did indeed update, thank you for feedbacking :)
You seem to be telling us that he has a complicated psychiatric condition and may at times believe that he is a vampire (hence appearing to try and bite Tara's neck), when actually he isn't. Is this right?
Yep, that's about right. :)
Yeah, young love at first sight - ain't it grand? :x
I hope you find the sleepover fun :)

----------------------------------------------
Watson: Oh, a woot! and a yippee! - Yay for me :D
I'm glad the William/Spike thing is believable & the geek in me must correct your thinking - in a lot of cases of MPD one or more of the personalities are aware of either some or all of the other personalities. :geek
Sorry if the 'princess' thing was vague - Willow is 'the princess' & it's more of a psychological restraining order rather than a psychic one.
Buffy, Sheila & Ira trust Willow's judgement & are aware that Willow knows her own mind & her own heart so no, it doesn't really phase them that Willow has feelings for Tara already. & yeah, maybe it's a little quick, but this is Willow & Tara after all, just, don't expect an easy ride.
The sleepover was a plan to simply spend as much time as possible with Tara, they have only just met so it'll all be innocent getting to know each other stuff - Buffy won't get in the way, I promise :)

----------------------------------------------
JustSkipIt: :thud Debra likes my fic :blush You have no idea how much your feedback means to me :D
I can see this story playing out very clearly in my head, so it's easy to describe everything, & I want to get the descriptions just perfect so that my readers can see the story as I see it.
Yeah, I like Ira & Sheila in this fic too & whilst helping out runaways could lead to trouble, what with Ira being the Mayor, I'm sure he's aware of all kinds of loopholes & stuff to avoid any trouble.

--------------------------------------------------
WFB: Hey hon, :wave *big hugs* :)
Thank you so much for leaving feedback, I know there's lots going on in your RL so it means a lot that you took the time to comment :flower
You did tell me that I'd get lots of cool feedback, & you were right - you're so smart :) The lovely kittens do indeed rock & so do you :D
Yep, Willow's gonna take care of Tara, actually, there's a lot of people in Sunnydale who are gonna take care of Tara - she ran away to the right town :)

ILYB-D :love

--------------------------------------------------
Irene: Hey :wave
Yeah, Mayor Rosenberg to the rescue :) He was just on his way to the diner & happened to notice what was going on.
Oh, that's a very interesting interpretation of William/Spike's disorder :hmm, your babble very much appealed to my inner psychologist :)
I still haven't figured out 100% what exactly is wrong with William, but once I have it figured out I'll try to explain it better.
Yeah, Willow's a darling in this fic :x
Heehee, Buffy's not famished, she's just a healthy growing girl who loves Mrs Rosenberg's cooking :)
Yep, the Rosenbergs love their little princess - who wouldn't love Willow?

---------------------------------------------------
singgirl:
then I saw it was written by you and I knew I needed to read it.
Aww, I'm blushing, :blush that is such a huge compliment - thank you :flower
Yep, Willow's family seem to be popular, I thought it was about time she had a nice family :)
I thought it would be cool if Willow was out & proud and it only made sense to have people be cool with it.
I'm glad the Spike/William thing makes sense & that you like the idea.
More very soon

---------------------------------------------------
Emms: No worries about lateness, RL stuff's gotta come first :) Excuses aren't needed at all, I'm just happy you got here sweetie :D
Yeah, the Spike encounter was intense & woo for Ira rescuing Tara :)
And how funny was sheila with the warming up of milk?
Okay, I'm confused :confused Do you not warm milk up to make hot chocolate? How come that was funny? :hmm
Yep, a sleepover-y, popcorn-y, movie-y therapy session coming up :) Hand holding? Brushing of digits? :hmm Maybe :D
Yeah, our girls are a little young to be sharing a sleeping bag, but the sleeping arrangements will be sorted out... and probably to your liking ;)
More, now :)

------------------------------------------------------
Okay, that's the thank yous, now stay tuned for some update-y goodness.

Hugs
Jeanne

Hey there,
I really like the start you have. You have only written 2(?) updates but you've brought in a veritabel slew of Buffy regulars. The attraction between Willow and Tara is amazingly obvious to everyone and knd of fun to see. I'm very curious to see where this will be going. Will Tara end up having a legitimate life there? How fast will she and Willow kiss, etc.? All very interesting questions and ones I'm sure you have an answer for.

Postby kindagay » Thu Jul 28, 2005 6:00 pm

Hello kittens :wave

A little note to Graceland: Thank you for the feedback I'm so glad you like my fic & all of your questions shall be answered in time :)

Okay, I'm going on vacation tomorrow so I wanted to get this update posted before I go. I hope you all enjoy :)

___________________________________________________________________________________________
“Hey Mom.” Buffy called out as she opened her front door.
“Hi Buffy, Willow and uhm…” Joyce Summers glanced questioningly at her daughter as she realised that she had never met the third young girl before.
“This is Tara; she’s staying in Sunnydale for a while. Is it okay if we have a chick flick sleepover? I promise we’ll be quiet and we won’t wake Dawn.”
“I guess that’s okay. Buffy, why don’t you help me make some popcorn and Willow can show Tara up to your room.”
“Okay.” Buffy followed her mother through to the kitchen, while Willow and Tara slowly climbed the stairs to Buffy’s bedroom.

“So, tell me about Tara.” Joyce began her interrogation as soon as Willow and Tara were out of ear-shot.
“I don’t really know much about her. She’s a runaway and her family; well her dad and brother anyway, aren’t very nice, but I don’t think she likes talking about them.” Buffy told all she knew as Joyce popped some popcorn into the microwave.
“And why are we trusting her and welcoming her into my home?”
“Because she’s sweet and shy and she really does look like she wouldn’t even squash a spider, and also, because Willow has a crush on her and would kill me if we left her out on the streets.”
“Hmm, I think I heard that last argument when I said that Faith could stay here.”
“Willow never had a crush on Faith; it was more of a kind of admiration. Besides, Tara is nothing like Faith, she’s all timid and quiet and polite. Willow’s mom and dad think she’s nice and they wouldn’t have agreed to let Willow have a sleepover with her if they thought she was dangerous.”
“You see, now that is a reasonable and valid argument. Here, the popcorn’s done.” Joyce smiled as she handed the large bowl to her daughter.
“Thanks Mom.”

----------------------------------

Whilst Buffy had been talking to her mom, Willow and Tara had been setting out blankets, sleeping bags and cushions on the floor, whilst getting to know one another better.

“Do you just have one brother?”
“Y-yeah.”
“I’m an only child, although, Buffy and Xander are practically like my brother and sister, they’re kinda like the family I chose for myself.”
“Th-that’s cool, I, I w-wish I c-could have ch-chosen my own f-family.”
“Yours can’t be all bad surely?”
“M-my mom, sh-she was r-really nice.”
“Was?” Willow queried softly, picking up on the use of the past tense as well as the sadness in Tara’s voice.
“Sh-she d-d-died, uhm, a, a f-few m-months ago.”
“Oh, I… Sorry. You, you don’t have to talk about it, that was really uhm, insensitive of me, I’m sorry.”
“I-it’s okay.” Tara gave a sad smile and a silence fell upon the two girls.

“Movies.” Willow blurted out rather loudly and enthusiastically, making Tara jump a little. “Sorry, uhm, I meant to say, what kind of movies do you like? ‘Cos we don’t have to watch chick flicks if you don’t want to, I’m sure I could talk Buffy into watching some uhm, musicals, or comedies, or even some of Dawn’s little kid movies if you wanted? Actually, as long as it doesn’t have subtitles Buffy will watch just about anything. So uhm, what kind of movies do you like?”
“I uhm, I d-don’t r-really watch m-movies much. Ch-chick flicks a-are fine.”
“Really? You don’t watch movies? We watch movies all the time, we have movie nights at least once a week. Sometimes we have themes, like uhm, oh, we have horror movie marathons at Halloween, or sometimes we have western nights, and once we had a merry musicals sing-along, Xander pretended not to enjoy that, but, he loved it really. Oh, but usually we’ll just choose a movie each and have a mishmash of different genres. And now you’re laughing at me, how come you’re laughing at me?”

Willow couldn’t decide whether to pout because she was being laughed at, or to grin because she had made Tara laugh.

“Sorry I, I just, i-it… y-your babble is, uhm, i-it’s a-adorable.” After hearing this, Willow settled on an extremely bashful smile.

The two girls held each other’s gaze intently, smiling timidly and sweetly at one another, both too shy to say anything further.

“Okay, I have popcorn; do you guys have the movie all set up yet?” Buffy burst into the room, completely oblivious to the private moment she had just barged in on.

“We were uhm, just trying to decide which one to start with.” Willow quickly recovered from the interruption.
“Well, how about Four Weddings, everyone likes that right?”
As Willow and Tara both scrunched up their noses, Buffy shrugged and started to glance through her video collection muttering titles to herself, before she found another possibility.
“Okay, how about Jerry Maguire?” Buffy suggested. “Willow has a crush on Reneé Zellweger.” She added as an aside to Tara.
“J-Jerry Maguire sounds good.” The quiet blonde giggled as Willow scowled at Buffy.
“Cool, oh, and then we have to watch One Fine Day, ‘cos George Clooney is so hot.”
“If you say so Buff.” Willow rolled her eyes at her best friend.
“I’ll bet Tara agrees with me?” Buffy turned curious eyes to Tara, and Willow held her breath in anticipation of the blonde’s reaction.
“H-he uhm, he’s not m-my type.”
“What, he’s too tall, dark and handsome for you?”
“He uhm, he’s t-too male f-for me.”

Willow couldn’t contain her squeal of excitement at the blonde’s revelation. Tara looked into smiling forest green eyes and spoke directly and meaningfully to Willow.

“B-besides I uhm, I p-prefer cute, b-babbling redheads.”
“Well, that certainly clears things up. No gay love in my room please.”
“Buffy!” Willow picked up a cushion and threw it at her best friend.
“Hey, don’t start Rosenberg; you know I can take you.” Buffy warned, arming herself with a pillow.

Willow picked up another cushion and a large pillow, shielding herself with the latter as she threw the former at Buffy.

“Oh you are so asking for it.”

The petite blonde leapt up from where she was sat on the edge of her bed and swung her pillow at Willow, catching the redhead’s left arm. Willow instantly retaliated, landing a soft, pillow-y blow to the side of Buffy’s head. The friendly tussle continued for several minutes, until Willow got her foot tangled in one of the blankets that was laid out on the floor and ended up falling backwards into a pile of cushions and a balled up sleeping bag. Buffy leaned over Willow, reigning blows on the disadvantaged redhead as Willow held her pillow above her head as a shield.

“No, stop, this isn’t a fair fight. Help! Tara help me.” Willow just managed to pant out between giggles and blows.

Tara, who had been watching in amusement from a safe distance, was instantly spurred into action by Willow’s cries for help. She picked up two cushions and leapt behind Buffy, bringing her soft weapons down repeatedly over the smaller girl’s head and back. Stepping backwards to avoid Tara’s attack Buffy lost her footing. Grabbing onto Tara in an attempt to stop herself falling she only succeeded in bringing Tara down with her; resulting in a giggling, tangled heap of arms and legs.

A very sleepy looking ten year old, with a yellow teddy bear clutched in her hand stood in Buffy’s doorway rubbing her eyes with her free hand.

“What’s going on?” The little girl enquired through a large yawn.
“Nothing Dawn, go back to bed.”
“Are you having a sleep-over?”
“No.”
“Yes you are. Who’s that other girl?”
“That’s Tara.”
“Can I watch movies with you?”
“No Dawnie. Go to bed, now.” Buffy instructed her younger sister impatiently.
“I’ll tell Mom that you woke me up.”
“Dawn, don’t you dare.”

Dawn opened her mouth as if to shout for her mom, and Buffy instantly acquiesced, presenting a bargaining offer to keep the little girl quiet.

“Okay, okay, you can watch one movie with us, but then you have to go back to your own room.”
“Yay.” Dawn skipped further into the room and bounced onto her big sister’s queen-sized bed.
“Hey, not on my bed squirt.”
“Well, none of you are using it, why can’t I?”
“Dawn, get off my bed.”
“Make me.” Dawn poked her tongue out at her older sister.

Buffy dove towards the bed, gently grabbing Dawn by her ankle and her arm, and proceeded to pull the girl away from the bed. Dawn did try to resist, grabbing onto the quilt in a vain attempt to remain on the bed. She landed on the floor with a small ‘thud’, the quilt softening her landing as well as wrapping itself around her. Less than a second later, Buffy was sat on top of her.

“Get your big, smelly butt off me.” Dawn’s muffled voice screamed to Buffy from within the quilt cocoon.
“Say please.”
“Get off me you big lump.”
“Ask nicely Dawn.”
“You’re squashing me.”
“You know how to ask properly Dawnie.” Buffy giggled as Dawn sighed defeated.
“Please get off me Buffy, the most beautiful, intelligent, popular, wonderful sister in the whole wide world.”
Buffy gave a satisfied smirk and stood up, allowing her hostage to free herself from the large quilt.

“A-are they a-always like that?” Tara whispered to Willow after watching the interaction.
“Yep. Oh, uhm, deep down, and I mean really, really deep down, they do like each other, but, mostly they just argue and torment each other.”
“Oh, uhm, I, I kinda uhm, meant, a-are they always a-all, playful a-and uhm g-gentle?”
“Gentle?”
“Uhm, yeah, I, i-it’s just, l-like p-puppies f-fighting, it’s p-play, n-not uhm, not like when D-Don… uhm… I, I mean, uhm, i-it, it’s, th-they’re uhm… B-Buffy’s not t-trying to, to h-hurt D-Dawn. They uhm, they’re j-just p-playing.” Tara trailed off towards the end of her explanation, lowering her head to hide behind her hair.

Willow reached out to the blonde, gently stroking the tips of her fingers over the back of Tara’s hand in an attempt to calm the girl.

Tara blinked slowly as Willow’s soft contact sent a warm tingling sensation tickling lightly along her arm, then slowly flowing through her chest and settling like warm treacle in her stomach.

Blue eyes curiously but contentedly fluttered open as a lazy smile tugged at the corners of Tara’s mouth.
Willow’s gaze travelled slowly from her and Tara’s now entwined fingers to the warm, delighted smile dancing on Tara’s full lips, before finally resting and almost drowning in the bottomless depth of Tara’s ocean blue eyes.

Well that certainly cleared some things up as Buffy said. I love the fact that Joyce is suspicious but Buffy clears it up. Dawn and Buffy's interaction is so typical and cute. Well done on that. And then Tara: bold girl! Yeah! Oh yeah, she and Willow have it so bad. Enjoy your vacation.

Damn you, Debra!! :flirt

Jeanne~

Nice update, sweetie. I'm really enjoying all of the varied interactions. Yay for Tara speaking up RE: her like of cute babbling redheads. Go shy girl!

And Tara's amazement at Dawn and Buffy's antics...so heartwrenching. I'm sure it will be nice for her to experience what a "normal" family is like.

Fun stuff, Jeanne. Can't wait for more of the sleepover. :x

Love Joyce, love her love her love her. She's right to call Buffy out on inviting strange girls to her home, especially after the obvious awkwardness that must have accompanied Faith's stay. Glad Buffy was able to give her reasons, and Joyce will love Tara for sure.

To be honest, I read
I p-prefer cute, b-babbling redheads.

and I was all swoon-y and the rest of the update just ... sigh. And then with the mutual gazing and hand-holding ... sigh again. :)

In some stories, they fall in love so quickly, sometimes too quickly (like ... they catch sight of each other at the other side of a long corridor and are instantly captured by each other's eyes) that it stretches the realm of believable. What you've done here, to have an instant attraction, but then a crush, tight interaction, a little adventure, then the relevations -- so much packed into one night, that it is believable that there is a connection that they can build on. Thank you and well done. :applause

Tara: No, I understand. You have to be with the person you love.
