I've just read this story and I have to say that I'm very much enjoying it.

There certainly seems to be a lot of mystery in this story, and I'm looking forward to finding out what the answers are. Though take your time, as the journey's a lot better than the arriving.

100 parts? All I can say is :D

Looking forward to :read more

Hey, Poppy... I just saw this recommended in--of all places--the recommendation thread, so I popped (as it were) on over. And oh, boy--am I liking this story.

First of all, the premise is fascinating. There's a little (or perhaps a big) whodunit here: If Tara's correct about the time span, who's known Willow for that long? See, I had this funny feeling about Natalie, esp. when you interspersed W/T scenes with Nat/Molly. And what did Grace pick up from the paper? But...neither Nat nor Molly seemed wiped out the next mornng, and the glimpse into Natalie's POV suggested that while she's been jealous and insecure, she was moved by Willow's plight. So...is she a red herring? And where the hell did that saying come from, anyway?

I've always been fascinated, too, by the idea that places carry emotional "scents." Tara's experience in the one rental was so well done; a wonderful example of the "show, don't tell" edict.

You're also doing an excellent job of balancing the emotional and the otherworldly aspects of this story. The interior monologues are great (I'm a sucker for those), and their gradual but inexorable pull to each other is palpable.

Finally, you're just a very solid writer w/ regard to form. Some people make what I consider a false distinction between style and content, but for me, attention to the basics of grammar and spelling create a solid foundation on which to build a truly wonderful story.

So this is piquing my interest and enjoyment on multiple levels, Poppy. I'm psyched to learn of the scope of this story, too--means I've got some good reading to look forward to. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Take care,

Mary

Wow. You've set up a really fascinating plot here. There's just so much mystery and intrigue - little flourishes that hint at a much bigger story waiting to be unpacked. Both Willow and Tara seem to have some industrial strength skeletons in their respective closets, which I'm sure will be pulled out and dusted off before this ride is over :)

Gotta say I really like the premise you have going with our girls. It's good to see Tara in a somewhat stronger role - less of a victim, if you like. She certainly has the emotional maturity to handle it. And the love story you're developing is beautiful. W and T seem to support each other instinctively right from the start, as if any other reaction were inconceivable. So right.

Looking forward to the next update already!

Hi all, Poppy had a lot of things going on today, so I am posting in her stead. Enjoy and remember, feedback feedback feedback!

•Title: Aeternum Vale - Chapter Eight

•Author: FlyingPoppy

•Feedback: Here or by pm is fine.

•Distribution: No, thanks. It's just for Pens.

•Rating: R

•Pairing: W/T

•Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Willow and Tara, they belong to :joss ME/UPN/whoever. All other characters belong to me. I'm just writing a story to keep myself out of mischief, I'm not making any money from it.

•Summary: This story is totally AU and will be long. Two girls meet and fall in love, but all is not what it seems.

•Notes:

- The hellmouth does not exist in this story but evil certainly does. A happy ending for W/T is certain, it's going to be a bumpy ride, though. Turn back now if your vehicle doesn't equip the suspension to deal...

Chapter Eight - Inter Nos

A couple of hours had passed. For the most part, a comfortable silence hung in the air. They now lay on the couch. Willow nestled between Tara's legs, relaxed against her warmth. She felt Tara's arms wrap round her shoulders, hands resting gently on her flat stomach. "I can feel your heart beating," Willow said dreamily. Feeling Tara tighten the hug for a second, Willow raised her hands and held the arms that were keeping her safe; warm.

The phone rang, snapping them both out of their little daydreams about what the future might hold, knowing that this wasn't just going to be some little fling.

"I should get that, it might be important," Willow said lazily, making no attempt to get up.

"Do you have a machine?" Tara asked.

Willow shook her head, sadly. Tara reluctantly withdrew her arms and started to sit up, causing Willow to shift. With a loud exaggerated sigh, Willow clambered to her feet muttering under her breath and vowed to take whomever it was to task if it wasn't an important matter. She picked up the phone and barked a grumpy "Hello," causing Tara to laugh out loud.

"Hey Will, it's Molly." A cheerful voice on the end of the line said. "Is everything ok?"

"Well it was," Willow stressed.

"Oh, sorry, I was just going to ask you round for dinner one night, is Wednesday good for you?" Molly sensed she had better get straight to the point. Willow wasn't in the mood for small talk.

"Sure, sounds good to me," Willow replied, speaking more politely now she'd calmed down a little.

"I was thinking of asking Tara, too. Would that be ok with you?" Molly continued, oblivious.

A knowing smile swept across Willow's face. "I guess it would be ok..." she dragged out.

"Oh, do you have problem with her? I thought you got on well in the week." Molly was sure her two friends had clicked and was now confused. There was definite clicking. Wasn't there?

Willow nearly laughed aloud, a plan formulating in her head. She knew what Molly was up to. "No, no problem. What time do you want me to show up?"

"Seven would be good."

"Ok, I'll see you then, I've got some new ideas to run past you as well." Willow tried to stay serious, not let Molly know anything was amiss.

The pair said their goodbyes and Willow returned to the couch, still smiling. She sat next to Tara, and leaned into her slightly, a smug grin on her face.

"What are you looking so pleased at?" Tara said, knowing Willow was up to something.

"Molly's trying to set us up," she explained.

"As in...together?" asked Tara, one eyebrow raised slightly, a quizzical look on her face.

Willow nodded, laughing. "She's always trying to set me up with people. There was this one woman, I have no idea why she thought I'd be interested, all she talked about was butterflies, seriously. All. The. Time." She emphasized.

A sad look came across Tara's face, the corners of her mouth downcast, eyes dejected, like she was about to cry.

"I l-like b-b-butterflies," she eventually got out, burying her head in her hands and sobbing.

Willow immediately regretted what she had said.

"Oh God, Tara! Me and my big mouth, I'm not like 'death to all butterflies' or anything, it was just all the time, whenever she was talking it was about butterflies." She had a horrified look on her face, knowing she was the center of Tara's pain, she'd only known her a little under a week and already she'd made her cry. This just wouldn't do.

As she went to put her arms around Tara to offer some comfort, she felt Tara shift her position and suddenly her hands were on Willow's sides, tickling.

Willow dropped to the floor squirming, struggling to catch her breath and unable to retaliate. Not quite understanding what was going on.

"You are so easy, Willow Rosenberg!" Tara said grinning from ear to ear, leaning over her and continuing to tickle the prone redhead. Willow's wriggling tipped Tara off balance. She seized the momentary advantage and turned frantic defense into attack. Willow rolled over, hands shooting out to Tara's stomach, tickling. But there was no reaction. Tara stuck her tongue out and said, "I'm impervious to your tickling!" before launching another attack, now alongside Willow on the floor. As she moved her hands back up to tickle Willow's sides, Willow tried to roll over to get away from the assault. Tara's thumb brushed across Willow's nipple, instantly hardening it and eliciting a loud moan. Suddenly, Tara's hands were still again, her hand resting against Willow's left breast.

Taking a deep breath, Willow leaped to her feet.

"You should ring Molly and let her know that you have to go sign those papers on Monday," Willow blurted out.

"Wha...? Willow?" Tara half sat, looking up at Willow's flustered face.

"You don't want her to think that you just haven't turned up," Willow continued, as if Tara hadn't said anything.

"Well I was gonna go at lunch time..." Tara started to explain as she climbed to her feet.

"Oh of course, lunch time. Time of sandwiches, bananas and all other things...lunchy..." Willow could feel her face becoming redder by the second, as she talked herself into a deeper hole but was unable to stop.

Tara took her hands. "Willow what's wrong?"

Willow took a deep breath and looked directly at the woman in front of her.

"I'm not ready for that...I didn't want to have to turn you down if you wanted...you know..." Willow explained, cocking her head to one side and raising her eyebrows.

A sad smile came over Tara's face. "Is that what you think would happen? Willow you can always say no, even if you just don't want me to hold your hand. Don't ever think otherwise, ok."

"I'm sorry, it's just that I've never, you know...done it before," came the sheepish reply.

"Oh and I have so much experience." Tara laughed. Willow looked surprised. "What you think there would actually be someone interested in a shy, nervous dyke, with a tendency to stutter when she's stressed, in a tiny inbred village?" Tara challenged.

"Well when you put it like that..." Willow couldn't help but smile.

Seeing her statement had had the desired effect, Tara wrapped her arms around Willow and gave a gentle squeeze.

"Try not to worry about things so much Willow, just do whatever comes naturally to you and if there's stuff you don't want to do, then don't do it. You can always talk to me about things, you know. You don't have to be shy with me."

"I...It's just, I don't really know you very well...yet. I've never even talked about it before, with anyone, let alone my girlfriend..." Willow paused when she saw a huge grin spread across Tara's face.

"Is that what you want us to be?" Tara questioned, eyes dancing.

"Um...err...not if you don't want..."

"Oh I want, Willow. More than anything."

"So, I have a girlfriend." Willow stated proudly.

"Me too. I bet mine is cuter than yours." Tara playfully added, her eyes sparkling, the grin on her face growing.

"Nuh-huh! Mine's a Goddess." The mood suddenly turned serious.

"Don't say that, Willow, I'm no Goddess." The look on Tara's face told Willow that she shouldn't push this - she was totally serious.

Wanting to ease the mood a little, Willow decided to go back to telling Tara of her plan. "We can't tell Molly, at least not until after Wednesday. I have a plan to get back at her."

For the first time, Tara saw a mischievous look come over Willow's face. It was adorable.

Willow continued, "When you get back, call Molly and ask her if you can have an extended lunch tomorrow, so you have time to sign all the papers and have something to eat."

"Willow? You've really thought about this haven't you?"

Willow nodded eagerly.

"There's one problem though," Tara began, "I don't have a phone I can use at the motel."

"Oh..."

Tara could see Willow's brain was quickly working out a solution.

"Ooh, I know, use my phone!" Willow fetched her phone and passing it to Tara was struck by a sudden thought. "Hang on." Willow pressed a couple of buttons. "There now when you dial, my number won't come up on her phone. Might kind of give the game away," she smirked.

Tara took the phone and dialled Molly's number. After only a couple of rings, someone picked up. Tara's face dropped when she heard who was on the other end of the line. Although Tara had never met her, Willow had managed to make Natalie out to be a bit of an ogre.

"Oh, he-hello. M-may I speak to M-M-Molly please? It's Tara."

Willow looked over at Tara quizzically. She knew Tara was prone to stuttering, but had never heard it this bad before. The next time Tara spoke, she was visibly calmer and the stammer was all but gone.

"Molly, hi." There was a short pause. "I have a favour to ask actually. I found an apartment over the weekend and....oh yes, it is," Tara grinned, thinking about the energy she had sensed in the apartment. "Tomorrow, that's what I wanted to ask you about. I was kind of wondering if I could have an extended lunch, so I'd have time to go and sort out the paperwork." Tara signed a thumbs up at Willow and as predicted, Molly asked the question. Tara fought to hold back a giggle and told Molly that she'd be delighted to go for dinner on Wednesday. She hung up the phone, and, unable to hold it back any longer, collapsed by Willow in fits of laughter.

"You were so right," she finally managed to get out, between taking gasps of air. We have to make a plan of action for Wednesday. Obviously we have to arrive separately-"

Before she could finish her sentence, Willow interrupted. "I have it all figured out, she's going to die. They both are."

Tara could see the twinkle in her girlfriend's eyes and knew that Wednesday evening was going to be a new experience for her.

~~~~~~~~~~
Molly grinned as she hung up the phone and sat down. The old armchair letting out a sigh as she lowered herself into its familiar comfort.
"We are go for plan A," she smiled, giving Nat a thumbs up.
Natalie let out a sigh. She should be used to Molly and her plans by now but was still surprised that Molly was so adamant about fixing Willow up. After the last attempt, Nat was sure that Willow would not be too happy when she learned what Molly was up to.
"Oh, come on, Nat!" Molly whined. "Where's your sense of adventure?"
Nat was exasperated. "Look, just don't you go blaming this all on me when it goes to hell. Willow is your best friend and Tara is the best worker you've ever had. Don't you think this is a bit of a risk?" By the time she had finished speaking, Natalie's tone was more gentle. She didn't want her girlfriend putting herself in an impossible situation. If things didn't go well between the two women – presuming Molly could actually get Willow to go out with Tara – she knew that Molly may well end up stuck in the middle.
"It won't go to hell. They're hot for each other. Now I just have to think of something great to cook on Wednesday. Something romantic."
Natalie knew there was no point arguing. Once Molly got an idea like this into her head, there was no stopping her. Might as well let things run their course. If there was any chance that Molly thought Nat had screwed things up, it would only mean ending up in the doghouse. Having been there many times in the burgeoning stages of their relationship, Natalie knew it was somewhere she wanted to avoid at all costs. She'd just have to be there to pick up the pieces if anything did go wrong.
~~~~~~~~~~

The next day, Tara made her way over to the estate agents in her lunch hour, picking at the salad she'd bought that morning. Unable to find the appetite to eat, Tara threw the less than half eaten package into a trashcan and picked up the pace. The chill in the air making the walk slightly less enticing than she had first thought. As her feet pounded the hard sidewalk, Tara found her mind turn to images of Willow. Willow, standing in a garden surrounded by waist-high, bright yellow flowers. Their heads turned to reach for the hot sun. Looking at Willow, she saw the similarities. Her face was looking upwards eyes closed, a smile gracing the corners of her mouth. She slowly spread her arms out and began to spin in circles, her skirt billowing out around her. In her mind, Tara took a step towards Willow, dodging her outstretched arms as they span. She reached out for Willow, wanting to hold her, but Willow was retreating into the grass, farther and farther away.

Tara was snapped abruptly from her daydream by a tight hand on her arm. Spindly fingers dug into the flesh of her forearm, dirty nails scratched through the fabric of her brown, corduroy coat.

"What are you doing here, bitch?" the figure rasped out.

Tara drew a sharp breath and tried to wrestle her arm free. The fingers clutched tighter. Panic spread through Tara, who the hell was this person? She was certain it was no one she knew, no one would have followed her here, would they? Tara looked at the face, mostly hidden by a dark overcoat and hood, bright eyes almost glowing from the depths of the face. It was definitely female, probably old, though it was hard to tell.

"I d-don't know what you're talking about. Just-" Tara jerked her arm away. Again, the almost superhuman fingers held on.

"Idris' new little bitch, eh? He won't be pleased, you realize. Not when I tell him." The eyes of the woman flashed green, lighting up her gloating features for a half second.

Tara caught a glimpse and recoiled in shock. The weathered face was somehow familiar to her. Harsh lines masked the features finer points; the resemblance was definitely there though. Finding a reserve of strength from somewhere deep inside, Tara pushed the woman to the ground and ran. Heart pumping, mind racing, where had she seen that face before? Tara's feet carried her to the end of the block, only then dare she look back, half expecting to see the woman floating through the air, advancing on her.

The street was empty. Just a normal, quiet, Monday afternoon.

Tara did a double take. Scanned the street for any sign of movement. Almost tempted to go back and search out the woman, confront her. Almost. Instead, she found herself walking steadily toward the estate agents, heartbeat back to normal. She was soon outside the establishment and raised her arm to push the door open, not noticing the slight green stain as it disappeared into the brown of her coat.

More importantly is Tara going to do the sensible thing and tell Willow about what happened?

I could so easy visualize this:
Quote:

"Willow? You've really thought about this haven't you?"

Willow nodded eagerly.

Also it is nice to see Willow being not so depressed and sad. Coming back into a somewhat normal life step by step.

Most of this update was indeed very sweet. The problem with that is however that we KNOW this is a flashback which ends in trouble. Well, at least that keeps floating in the back of my mind... somehow/somewhere they both will get in trouble, bit upsetting that thought :rolleyes .

As for the encounter with the strange woman; lots of new questions from that one. What or what is Idriz, is it the 'he' the woman refers to further on ? If so, why would Idriz not be pleased with his 'new bitch' ?? Hmm... didn't we see a woman in part 1 referring to Idriz as well ? So that woman will be around for some time. Anybody referring to Tara like she did deserves to be quartered though... slowly.

Why is Tara concerned about having been followed by such a woman ? For that matter why is she concerned about being followed ?? We don't really have much information about Tara as is. If she truly ran away to escape the sometimes horrific images she seems to see from past events, why did she hesitate so much to tell Willow ? It's a perfectly innocent and valid reason to move after all. For some reason Tara's possible problem makes me think of _FireStarter_ , no clue if thats relevant though :lol .

Clearly Tara hasn't told Willow as much about herself as the other way around. Again that doesn't HAVE to cause problems but it might. Should be very interesting to see if Tara tells Willow about this meeting. I could easily see her not telling Willow to avoid her being worried though....

Grimmy

P.S. Chapter 3 has an incorrect []i near 'sweetie', just re-read it :)

Loved how the two were so playful with each other, and that Tara was easily able to calm the worried Willow. She has let Willow know that she can talk to her about anything, and that, I'm sure, means a lot to Willow, who, before now has been so alone.

Molly plotting to set the two of them up, oblivious to the fact that the two are determined to have a little fun at her expense. Can't wait to see what Willow thinks up!

Tara's encounter has me all intrigued as to who Idris is, and to reading more about her past.

Chapter Seven and Eight Replies

Postby FlyingPoppy » Wed May 12, 2004 6:18 am

Thanks for doing that a.s.h. :) Wow! I got a 10!!!!!!! :D

Hey everyone. I have a couple of replies to address regarding chapter seven, then it's on to chapter eight's.

AntigoneUnbound - Mary, thank you. I pondered long and hard before starting to post this story. To hear from you that I am, indeed, doing something right means a lot. Oh, there's a big whodunnit all right, though that's not necessarily going to be the major point of the story. "What?" I hear you say, "Not MORE plot????" I have a thing or two up my sleeve ;)

As far as the newspaper goes, maybe Grace was simply picking up the scent of the delivery boy...maybe not. I like red herrings, though not to eat. Herrings were salted and smoked to become red, and very smelly. As far as I was told, 'to drag a red herring across the trail' (eventually shortened to just 'red herring') was a ploy used by convicts to distract police and their dogs from the scent. These and more fascinating but useless bits of trivia are locked away in Poppy's brain, to be opened only on Bank Holidays and other special occasions.

Talking of scents...I think it's entirely viable for places to carry emotional 'scents.' It will be further addressed at some point.

'Show, don't tell." Yes, I'm having that drummed into me :D most pleasant it is, too!

Thank you so much for your kind words, I hope you continue to enjoy this.

astrangerhere - I know, you told me so. As did a number of people. Maybe one day it will sink into my thick skull!

Modjadji - Thank you :) Yes, there's a lot of mystery and intrigue. When I was plotting this out, more and more kept coming to mind. One thing led to another and here we are. It's still being added to, there are things that aren't yet set in stone and, yes, we will have some sparkling clean skeletons by the end!

I wanted to write something a little different. I love Tara's character, I did toy briefly with having the girls' roles swapped over but this was the way things turned out, so I'm glad you're liking it!

tinnakaren - On to Chapter Eight now. I like cliffhangers :D there are many many more to come. Some may be more hill hangers, others on the Grand Canyon scale of things and, finally, the Everest of cliffhangers. Oh yes, it's a comin'...

sam darls - See? I can do cute! I'm not always a cliffhanger meanie... Well, ok, there was an itty bitty one at the end there... Ok, maybe not so little. Following a.s.h.'s 1-10 scale of cliffhangers, I shall implement a 1-10 scale of how things are, 10 being good. Yesterday was a 1, today, so far, about a 5. Any English kittens wanting to join in with a rousing chorus of 'NHS hospitals suck, yeah, yeah, yeah!' are free to do so. As are any other kittens, actually.

justin - Ooh, questions, questions...answers are: 1) I'm not telling! 2) Maybe 3) Wait and see! :p Thanks for reading :)

Grimlock72 - Yes, this flashback ends in trouble. Not for a while though and it will be pretty obvious when it's coming because of the timeline. I've already told everyone when it's going to be. Unless I suddenly jump a month or so...'cause I can be sneaky like that.

Idris will be making an appearance at some point and I'm sure we haven't seen the last of that strange woman.

Would you be concerned if such a woman were following you? I know I would.

Thanks for the heads-up on the typo, it's all fixed now.

CEsgirl13 - Hey! Glad you're liking it. Thanks for reading :) Updates are on Tuesdays.

pipsberg - Yes, the plot thickens, by the end I think you're going to be able to stand your spoon up in it... :D

mollyig - I kind of like writing 'playful'. It lets me mess about a little! Next Chapter you will find out what the girls have in store for Molly. Yes, I'm sure that Tara telling Willow she can tell her about anything has helped her but does Tara feel that she can tell Willow everything? Once again, time will tell.

To everyone who's wondering who Idris is: he is Tara's pet monkey from the depths of Borneo. He used to be a lab monkey but escaped by virtue of his modified genes. Now Tara has run away from him, as he was too domineering and wouldn't do any of the housework...

For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision; but today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope.

My name's elizabeth, how do you do? *holds out hand intended for acception or rejection* Nice to meetcha finally, after so many gripping chapters...

I like your fic. And that's kind of an understatement, but if i had the time to do the overstatement version, you might get bored...possibly want to ban me from your fic...

Oh hell, i'll do it anyway...

Dear Poppy,

Umm...first of all, i believe i read one o' your other fics, cause i recognize your screen name frome before, i don't know, my memory is failing now, possibly due to Prom last night...oh what else, what else...*searches brain*

Ahah! Second you manage to not only write a wonderful, realistic story of these two loverly ladies, (although magic, supernaturual beings etc. are involved) but you also have captured all of our eyes with this fantastic mystery story going on in the background.

And now, now with that crazy woman-thing that had that raspy voice (which at first confused me; i thought she was a he) i'm even more intrigued as to know what in the frilly heck is happening. So intrigued i might have to camp out at your computer, to await what's gonna happen next. Oh, yes...i will do it, i have supplies, even a mini buffy comic-book collection; i can wait a long time.

So, in conclusion, i must say i'm so grateful for your writing this story, else i'd be searching the board aimlessly for a good fic while others remain un-updated...tis a sad world without good fic...and you've save me from it! Go you.

Love the story, and am hoping to read more...soon...maybe sooner...how about now? now's good. i like now...no? ugh....fine...

heya poppy,

I thought it was about time I left some feedback to tell you how much I'm enjoying this fic instead of just reading each update and thinking 'damn I like this fic!' because you're not a mindreader or anything...unless you are and you already know :p ...so all this would be kind of redundant :D

Anyway, AUs are my favourite kind of fic. I love reading a new situation created in which our girls can meet and fall in love. This is one has drawn me in right from the start due to your amazing writing ability and excellent characterisation of all the main players. It's well paced, flowing snappily from description to dialouge as well as from one event to the other.

At the moment I'm really loving Willow and Tara's little game with Nat and Molly...Molly is so cute trying to set them up. However, while she thinks they would be great together, she hasn't visited Pens lately to see that they are in fact soulmates and will always find a way to be together no matter what! And I loved the 'I bet my girlfriend is cuter than yours' line :D

I understand that this is going to be a long fic - yay! I will definitely be eagerly tuning in every Tuesday for an update...although I think it will be Wednesday down here! Ah, the suspense...the excitement!

Happy writing and take care of yourself!

Awww...this fic is so cute...I just caught up on it and I love it. I'm kinda scared to ask what's wrong with Willow but I guess we'll know in time. Tara is a really powerful witch...it doesn't surprise me though that she knew what had happened in the house. I think w.e. Willow's coming up with for the dinner w/ Nat and Molly is gonna be very funny. Update soon

Poppy-

Well, here it is a day before the new update, but my brief is finally done so I can put some good feedback up.

First, this was a great tone overall. Happy, fluffy, happy, slightly cautionary, then outright nailbiter. Very fun. As I mentioned previously, I am still very worried about that green stuff in her coat, and am not likely to forget it soon.

Lets see, what else...Oh yeah, this quote:
Quote:
"Don't say that, Willow, I'm no Goddess." The look on Tara's face told Willow that she shouldn't push this - she was totally serious.

Aside from this being a very different way we are used to hearing Tara talk, this is also a place where I am reminded of a marked difference in your girls than the ones from the Buffyverse. Just a subtle, but very effective reminder that while these, at heart, are our Willow and Tara, they have had very different formative experiences.

The stutter on Tara was not formed by abusive family, and Willow's personality was formed in completely different ways. The things we see remaining are Tara's nurturing and Will's computer finesse. I am so looking forward to learning more of these women's pasts and how it is going to create their future.

And now that I have waxed entirely too philosophical on that point, the rest of it was great too. I am trying to decide how I feel about Molly and Nat. On the one hand, they seem like a nice, normal couple. On the other, my paranoia set in when everyone started wondering about Nat, and I thought, oh Poppy is now just trying to make them look normal to draw attention away from her. Eek.

I am just waiting around for a solid villian I can sink my teeth into and not wonder if I am being double-crossed. What if that doesn't happen? Oh well, I am still gonna enjoy the ride!

a.s.h.

Can you help me with this heart in my chest? It ain't perfect, but you should see me use it.

Chapter Nine

Postby FlyingPoppy » Tue May 18, 2004 5:31 am

Hey everyone. Forgive the shortness of these replies. I've had an icky few days and feel like I've been dragged through a bush backwards, as the saying goes.

WhiteSkyFire - Thank you!!

astrangerhere - Bad, bad Poppy. Promise, I won't do it again... :kdevil Err, where'd that come from? Please say you're still my number one fan... :heart

thebardgirl - Hey, pleased to meet you too. *shakes hand* Apparently I've been a bad, bad girl. This is my first fic, so, no, you haven't read any of my previous ones, unless I wrote and posted one in my sleep or something... :p

So you're the one who's been camped out at my computer! You can pack up your gear now, update's coming right up.

KiwiAlcyone - Hey Alcy. Thanks for the feedback. Despite the protestations of certain people, I'm not actually a mind-reader.

Eep! I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that people have been saying such lovely things about this, thanks again :)

Sapphos Dream - Hey. Thanks! Don't be scared to ask questions, I'm not allowed to make up answers anymore, it's bad. :sigh I could come up with some totally unbelievable tripe about what's wrong with Willow but (unlike certain people) I'm going to go with something a little more fitting with the story so far.

barnabasvamp - Thank you. I think the only thing I can say that the woman was trying to tell Tara is that there's gonna be trouble!

astrangerhere - Hurrah for finished briefs. Um, sounds a bit weird here, briefs being another name for pants and all. Oh, I mean panties, knickers, whatever you want to call them.

The green stuff on Tara's coat...out of sight, out of mind?

Quote:
I am so looking forward to learning more of these women's pasts and how it is going to create their future.

Mostly it's just going to be hints for the time being. It will come though and you will know as much about these lovely women as I do.

Do you know how strong the urge is to make up a tale about some inanimate object being the villain?

You know, even if I gave you what appeared to be a solid villain, I might still be double crossing you!

It's dinner time...

Chapter Nine - Pro Di Immortales!

Willow spent most of the next couple of days at work on some ideas for the nursery website. Since she started work on it for Molly, she kept the same basic theme. It was time for a change. Technology evolved so quickly, it soon became an outdated looking page, although sales continued to grow, Willow felt things could be even better. The nursery business boomed at a time when a lot of other businesses fell by the wayside, people obviously placing a pretty garden higher on the list than decorating the inside of their house. The success that the nursery enjoyed led a business acquaintance of Molly to inquire after Willow's services. Molly warned that she would probably refuse, and was proved correct. From Willow's point of view, she was in an ideal position, earning a living wage from working for only 10 or so hours a week. Truth be told, it was all she thought she could manage anyway. Molly overpaid her, she knew, but nothing she did was going to change that.

Tara was due to move into her new house that coming weekend. After great debate, Willow had agreed there weren't really a lot of belongings to transport, though she insisted on a shopping trip to buy essentials at some point on Saturday. She was going to be helpful damn it! Once that point was settled, they discussed the plans for Wednesday night. Obviously, they couldn't just show up together, that would look way too suspicious. So, Willow proposed that she show up first, laptop in hand, ostensibly to show Molly her plans for the website. Tara would arrive about half an hour later, bang on time, and they would take things from there.

Willow slowly walked up to the door, twenty minutes later than planned. Over an hour had been spent trying out various combinations of skirts, pants, shirts and sweaters, before she finally settled on a long, burgundy velour skirt and plain, three-quarter sleeve white blouse; simply because it was what she was wearing when she couldn't justify being any later.

Willow knocked on the door, took a deep, cleansing breath, and calmed the giggle she felt simmering just beneath the surface. She tried to still her mind and just go with things, at least until after they had eaten; it would ruin the plan if she gave anything away.

Natalie opened the door, her black hair towelled dry. "Hello, Willow. Come in," she said, a shaky smile in place, as she stepped aside to make room for Willow to pass.

Willow was bemused by this, having never received more than a frosty welcome from Natalie. Trying to force a smile, Willow stepped into the house, only to be accosted by a wet dog.

"Well, hi there, Grace!" Willow said, leaning down to scratch the pup's soggy chest.

"Grace you're all wet! Leave Willow alone." Natalie pointed towards Grace's bed and at the click of Nat's fingers, the pup duly sauntered over to sit in her bed, letting out a huff as she did so.

"New trick," she continued. "Molly's just in the kitchen, she won't be long. Can I get you a drink?" Natalie offered, she ran a hand through her short hair, then rubbed nervously at her nose in a gesture of pure discomfort .

Willow commented to herself.

"Sure, I'll have a beer, thanks," Willow said, thinking she might as well be polite if Nat was going to make the effort.

Natalie disappeared into the kitchen, and shortly reappeared carrying two glasses of beer, struggling to hold the door open and keep the glasses level. Willow took a half step to help but stopped when she saw Molly's taller frame reaching over Nat's shoulder, holding the swing door wide open.

"How you doing, kiddo?" Molly smiled, not having seen Willow since her little 'display' at the cafe.

Willow took the offered glass from Natalie and gave Molly a quick hug. "I'm fine. Much better, actually, though I'm not sure I appreciate you sending strange women round to my apartment," she confessed, raising an eyebrow.

Molly looked perplexed for a second, then caught on. "Tara's not a strange woman, I did tell you she was coming round also this evening didn't I?" She watched for any sort of reaction, but Willow was keeping her feelings close to her chest.

"You did." Willow kept her answer short and sat down at one end of the couch.

"Ok...Will, I have to finish a couple of things in the kitchen if you don't mind..." Molly left the sentence hanging.

"Sure, go ahead," Willow said, hoping that Tara would turn up soon so she wasn't left alone with Natalie for too long.

Molly left the room, the momentarily open door allowing the smell of fresh baked bread and lasagne to waft through into the living room. As soon as Molly was gone, Natalie perched on the edge of the couch beside Willow and fixed her a serious gaze.

"Willow, I know you don't like me," she ventured, unsure of quite how to proceed. Willow started to speak, but Nat wanted to finish. "I don't really blame you, I was an ass when I first met you. Something's kind of dawned on me recently, maybe I'm just growing up, I don't know."

Willow's mouth hung open, her eyebrows immediately sky-high, she was seriously taken aback. Willow hadn't seen this coming, not in a million years, and not from Natalie. She sat back a little and crossed her arms, ready to hear what Natalie had to say but still skeptical.

Natalie continued, "I was just so sure that there was more between you and Molly - I know there never was," she added quickly, her eyes meeting Willow's. "It was just so easy to jump to the wrong conclusion. Come on, two hot women sharing a house for such a long time, something's bound to have happened, right?" Natalie raised an eyebrow and sat back on the couch, finally relaxing somewhat. She crossed her legs, pulled up her sock, and continued, "That's what it seemed like anyway. I was insanely jealous. Never in my life did I dream that someone as wonderful as Molly would come along and God forbid she would ever feel anything for me approaching how I feel for her. It's just, deep down, I didn't feel like I deserved Molly's love. What would she want with someone like me?"

"So, all this time you've just been being mean to me because you were jealous? Of me?" Willow questioned, turning to see Nat's reaction.

Natalie lowered her head until Willow thought it was going to disappear into her chest. "I'm sorry. I truly am sorry," Natalie said in a tiny voice. "If I ever lost her I don't know what I'd do. It's all for show, I'm not as tough as I look."

There was silence for a moment as both women thought over what had just been said. Natalie was fidgety and brushed at the pale linen pants covering her thigh, then was the first to speak, "I know you've been through a lot Willow, still are even. I don't expect you to forgive me. I just want you to know things are going to be different from now on. Hell, I'm even growing to kind of like that little mutt," she glanced over to the bed where Grace was fast asleep, paws twitching as if giving chase to some unseen cat.

"Who is?" Willow said, rhetorically.

"Excuse me?" Nat was confused. She uncrossed her legs and sat forward once again, looking to Willow for an answer.

"As tough as they look," Willow explained. "I don't think anyone is. I believe you though, that things will change, I can see from the way you've acted since I got here. I just... I’m not real big on trusting people Natalie. Actions speak louder than words."

"Just give me some time, then?" Natalie asked. "I know how special you are to Molly, I don't want to come between that." Natalie stretched out her arm and wrapped it around Willow's shoulders in an awkward, one armed hug that totally threw Willow. Deciding to reciprocate the move, Willow briefly returned the hug and then withdrew, just as the doorbell rang.

"That'll be Tara. Molly sure thinks a lot of her," Natalie said, gauging Willow's response.

Willow just nodded noncommittally as Natalie rose to open the door, once again running her hand through her hair to tidy it. Having heard the doorbell, Molly also entered the living room and took the last available chair in the room. She purposefully didn't sit by Willow on the couch, determined to push Willow and Tara together if it was the last thing she did. She could tell they were attracted to one another by their display at the nursery the previous week. At least she hoped they were. Tara was so Willow's type anyway. Or, at least what she thought was Willow's type. Admittedly, she'd made a mistake with the butterfly woman, but that was only one time, a time she didn't want to repeat ever again. A deep blush rose to Molly's cheeks at the memory, Willow hadn't spoken to her for days after that little embarrassment.

They both heard Nat greeting Tara and soon all four women were in the same room, no one quite sure what to say. Stony silence filled the room, disturbed by the occasional shuffling of feet and nervous cough. Natalie broke the silence by asking Tara what she'd like to drink, then disappeared into the kitchen. Molly soon made her excuses and followed.

Willow chanced a grin at Tara, who couldn't help but smile back.

"You ok?" Willow whispered and checked the kitchen door for any sign of their hosts returning. She then returned her gaze to Tara, who was dressed in a pair of dark cargo pants and fitted brown knit sweater. Willow thought appreciatively.

Tara simply nodded in return, the grin on her face belying her nervousness.

"She is so obvious," Willow continued, still keeping her voice low, shutting up quickly when she heard the door click open signalling the return of Natalie with Tara's drink.

"So, Tara, Molly tells me you've finally found a house," Natalie stated, trying to get some sort of conversation started. The two women had just been sitting in silence when she returned to the room, looking very awkward with each other. .

"Yes, I'm moving in on Saturday. It's up on the North side of town. Near that little coffee shop with the muffins," Tara elaborated.

"Ooh, the muffins, I wish we were closer to that place sometimes. That's near you isn't it, Willow?" Natalie asked, genuinely interested now.

"Yeah, I'm just round the corner. Maybe we can be breakfast buddies or something," Willow suggested brightly. Natalie just raised an eyebrow, while Tara blushed and stared at the floor.

"Oh! I didn't mean that!" Willow exclaimed. "Obviously, um, with the not knowing you and stuff," she looked directly to Tara, who was in full blush mode, a mischievous glint in Willow's eyes.

"I know what you meant, that would be nice sometime. I only really know Molly here," Tara bit at her bottom lip after she spoke, holding back the grin she could feel building.

Molly chose that moment to enter the room, ears burning. "Did I hear my name there? It's all good I hope?" she questioned, standing next to Natalie. "Dinner's ready when we are. I've set the kitchen up to eat in if that's ok with everyone."

There was a general nodding of heads and everyone made their way through to the kitchen, where dinner was awaiting them. It was a quiet affair; Tara and Willow kept throwing each other shy glances, to try to keep up the act of being interested, but not really knowing each other.

As Molly cleared the plates away, Tara spoke to Willow, "Were you ok? After the other day, I mean. At lunch."

"Yeah, thanks for coming to check up on me, but I was fine. Am fine," she amended, a smile on her face, blushing slightly.

"Maybe you could swing by and check the place out after I move in, Molly? I don't have much furniture yet, it has a great feel about it, though." Tara's eyes glazed over. She thought of the atmosphere at the house, the power that was there. She was brought back from her revelry by Molly clearing her throat, loudly.

"I'd love to. Maybe bring you a housewarming present, too," Molly suggested.

"Are you having a party?" Natalie questioned, eyes bright, her face lighting up.

"Well I don't really - " Tara began but was soon cut off.

"Oh come on! Everyone has a housewarming party," Natalie tried to convince her, almost bouncing as she spoke.

"What with four people there? Wouldn't exactly be swinging would it?" Tara joked dryly, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, I don't know. I know some hot, young dykes I could – Hey!"

Molly had kicked her under the table as she sat back down and was now throwing daggers at her lover. "House warmings are so last season," Molly tried to joke.

Natalie wasn't finding it very funny though. "Why don't we go back into the living room, get comfortable, while Molly puts the rest of this stuff away?" she suggested, then gave Molly a look that promised they would discuss this later.

No sooner were they in the room, Natalie made some excuse to go upstairs, leaving Willow and Tara alone. They both sat on the couch, close to each other.

Eyes sparkling in anticipation, Willow questioned, "now?"

Tara simply nodded and the two began to kiss. Softly at first, gently brushing their lips over each other. Gradually they built it up until Willow heard footsteps on the stairs. She opened her mouth fully and took Tara's tongue deep inside. As they kissed, Willow's hand found its way down to Tara's firm ass, stroking and squeezing while she waited for all hell to break loose.

~~~~~~~~~~
After hanging around upstairs for a few minutes to give the two some time alone, Natalie began on her way back down all the stairs. she thought as she rounded the bottom of the stairs into the living room. Then stopped in her tracks. Willow and Tara were on the couch making with some pretty serious smoochies. Choking back a gasp, she snuck into the kitchen, unnoticed by the otherwise engaged couple.
"Jesus Christ!" she exclaimed softly, eyes wide, once in the safety of the kitchen.
"What's wrong?" Molly was worried after seeing the look on her lover's face and quickly crossed the room to be by Natalie's side.
Natalie just motioned towards the living room with an outstretched hand, unable to get her words out. Molly decided to look for herself, went storming into the living room and was promptly treated to a free show.
Willow was practically on Tara's lap, one hand on her ass, the other supporting her weight on the sofa. Tara didn't look to be complaining about the attention and was in turn heaping praise on Willow's left breast. Neither of them had even seen her. Quickly making her way back into the kitchen before being spotted, Molly was more than a little flushed.
"Wow," was all she could manage to say to Nat, who by now was sitting at the table flabbergasted, drink in hand. "Well, I guess they didn't need too much bringing together," she added and took a gulp of scotch.
"I told you they were hot for each other," Molly said smugly as she sat in the seat opposite.
Meanwhile, Tara had heard the kitchen door open and then close again. Realizing what had happened, she pulled back slightly from Willow, leaving her hands where they were.
"I think they both got a bit of an eyeful," she smirked. "You think they'll be back for more?"
"I don't think so. I think whoever comes in next will enter very noisily. Ok, do you remember what we rehearsed?" Willow asked, trying hard to concentrate on current matters instead of Tara's hand drawing circles round her left breast.
"That's very distracting you know?" she told Tara.
"Oh, and you doing that to my ass isn't?" came straight back at her.
"Touché," was all Willow could come up with before she heard the door noisily opening, so she came out with the planned, loud utterance of "...back to my place," then they both moved to separate sides of the couch, as if nothing had been going on. Molly and Natalie entered the room talking loudly about some woman called Melanie. As soon as they were in the room, Willow put on her 'ill' face and came out with her line,
"Guys, I'm really sorry, but I'm not feeling too great. Tara said she'll walk me home."
"It's ok, I'll dri- " Nat managed to get out before feeling another swift kick in the shin, she was about to complain when she saw the look that Molly was fixing her. Opting for the quiet life, she kept her mouth shut.
"I'll show you those ideas for the web site some other time," Willow said, before standing to leave. "Thanks for cooking Mol, it was lovely."
"You're welcome, honey. It's good to see you looking a little happier," Molly said, casting a quick look at Tara, who instantly blushed. "Thanks for coming Tara," she added, turning her full attention to the blonde.
"I had fun," Tara smiled.
Molly thought wickedly, holding back her laughter, instead just giving a wry smile.
Willow looked over at Natalie. "Thank you," she smiled.
"We should do it more often," Natalie suggested brightly.
"I'd like that." Willow's answer was an honest one.
With that, the two women left the house and made their way down the road, arms linked.
Molly and Natalie stood at the door to their property, not quite able to believe what had transpired. Natalie's face a picture of pure incredulity, while Molly, although not expecting things to go this far, was looking more than a little smug.
Molly burst into laughter as soon as she thought they were out of earshot. "Uh-huh. From where I was standing, it looked like they were both having fun. Not feeling well! Is that the best they could come up with?"
"Love does funny things to your brain. You really think I'd have done some of the things…"
A raised eyebrow from Molly stopped Nat mid-sentence. Shaking her head, Molly returned to the kitchen to wrap up the remaining food and put it away in the fridge.
Nat sighed and entered the house, closing the door behind her and sliding the bolt across into place.
They are so cute together. So were they expecting a bad reaction? Or was it all just apart of the plan to get away? Also, is there something between Molly and Nat? Because it just seems that there are some scattered eggshells that they're trying to step around. Maybe it's Nat's insecurity or something, I don't know. Thanks for the great update.
Of course I am still your Number One Fan, Poppy! Don't you dare think of letting the title slip! As for this fluffy little chapter. Pure character piece. It was quite fun, amusing and all the other pleasant things it should have been.
I was a little suprised to see Will and Tara going at it quite so strongly as they had just had that lovely "don't do anything you don't want to" chat just a few pages ago, but it still seemed to fit.
Having said all that, I feel there was a crypticness in Nat's last line that may show more in the future.
Quote:
"Love does funny things to your brain. You really think I'd have done some of the things…"
What things could she ever be talking about? I just dont know why Molly would have cut her off otherwise if it weren't something you are hiding from us. However, this could just be my paranoia meter hopping off the chart again in my dire search for someone not to like in this story. Cause as it stands, I like everyone.
Having said all that, I feel like this chapter is the clam before the storm. Or at least one of the storms. It was far to happy and fluffy for something not to go bad soon. Maybe not bad, but I do expect some plot drive to intersperse that move-in scene. Somthing is lurking, just around the corner.
And no, i haven't forgotten the green stain. Nor do I doubt your ability to make the villian an inanimate object, and tables are still on the top of my list.
Good to see Nat making the effort with Willow. The fact that she actually admitted to Willow that she initially was suspicious and jealous is testament to the fact that she truly does want to get along better with her.
Good feelings all around, now why am I so suspicious about that ???
Nat seems sincere in her wish to become friends with Willow. She certainly made herself rather vulnerable in her talk to Willow, got to give her points for that. I fully understand Willow not being to trusting about anyone at the moment, I would be carefull if I were her too. Hint to Willow; crossing your arms might make you look mighty defensive (i.e. not open), avoid it :)
Natalie is a bit slow to pick up on things isn't she ? She offered to drive Willow home, almost foiling their get-away plan :lol Het poor shins must hurt, that does establish who runs their household though... easily.
I wonder how Tara feels about playing this trick on Molly and Natalie. Hopefully she wont feel guilty for too long.
Don't know what Natalie was about to say concerning 'love makes you do the wacky' basicly. It is curious Molly doesn't even want her to speak about it when they are alone, it's not as if Grace would mind :)
Several questions concerning Molly remain, which is a good thing. Got to be suspicious about someone :lol
P.S. Assuming the titles are in latin, anybody care to translate those for a poor soul who only speaks Dutch and English ?
