I am so not a Diana fan but she picked good songs. Jasmine needs to leave now. After initially annoying me, Fantasia has won me over. I think she has a better long term future.

What WAS that?!??!

Insane.

I like Jasmine, but she sucked last night. She did.

Hey Hawaii! Give Jasmine a record contract but quit voting for her! No way should she have been there ahead of Latoya.

Unbelievable.

Jaysus, this is just mad. The person with the most talent and the close-second with the best stage presence are the bottom two?

I really thought Latoya had what it takes to get to the final. Fantasia, I feel, is a great entertainer, but had a few weeks of somewhat mediocre singing. Latoya has been the most consistent of all the performers.

And as for the other two. I do agree that Diana has improved, but Jasmine should have been voted off ages ago.

Ah well, I'll just have to pin my hopes on Fantasia winning now. I do think Latoya has a long and prosperous future in the music business ahead of her though.

Like I've always said, never leave it to an American to vote for something important....this latest fiasco just proves my point. If a majority of Americans that voted feel that Latoya is less talented than Jasmine, then they deserve the shite music they have been getting. Pathetic. No wonder the state of the American Music Industry is the way it is now....filled with throwaway talent and forgettable music. *sigh*

So true, a.s.h. There is no way in hell any record company would touch Jasmine. She's not good and she's not bad enough (like William Hung) for the so-bad-it's-good market. I don't hate Jasmine, but she does not deserve to've gotten this far in the competition.

Also consoling me is the fact that I'm pretty sure Fantasia will take this thing now, for two reasons - she's likely to be getting the La Toya votes and the Fantasia fans will be voting their fingers to the bone from here on out.

I agree with Toni, the voting is flawed. I am absolutely certain that La Toya got votes from more different people, just those people didn't sit there for two hours voting with all five of their phones like the Jasmine fans did.

Another thing, too, is that the way the voting works is skewed to favor Jasmine, because by the time the phone lines open up in Hawaii (which is the only state in that time zone) the lines have closed for all the mainland time zones. Now, to all you people who've voted, how many times did you actually get through? How many times did you get a busy signal? Every time I've voted, at least two-thirds of my calls have gotten a busy signal. Tens of millions of people in my time zone and when Central opens, Eastern still has an hour to vote. So half the mainland is voting at once, overloading the phone lines. Hawaii votes and it's all by itself in that time zone with nary a busy signal in sight.

So unfair.

Go Fantasia!

okay, first off, i'm from hawaii and i agree that jasmine should have gotten the boot. but, please....do you honestly believe that hawaii's one million plus votes made the difference? why is everyone upset over the people voting for jasmine and not at the people who did NOT vote for latoya or fantasia?

maudmac, i agree with you, the voting system is flawed, but it's not about the time zones. i'll try to vote 10 times and i'm lucky if two votes register. hawaii doesn't have the capacity to handle many phone calls at one time, so we're getting busy signals too. i think it should be one vote per phone number so it's not about how many times you can press redial.

Re: WTF?!?

Postby maudmac » Fri May 14, 2004 1:09 am

Hey, ange. Yeah, those are good points. I don't disagree.

I'm not upset about Jasmine's fans voting so much. They like her, they should be voting a lot. And shame on anyone who really cares about the outcome of this show, wanted La Toya to win, and didn't vote. Definitely.

But it does seem like there's probably a disproportionate volume of calls from Hawaii. From La Toya London's loss bewilders Idol fans:

Quote:
Of the 29 states in Verizon's local territory, only New York and California logged more calls on its network than Hawaii after the show, a Verizon spokesman said Thursday. California and New York are among the most populous states in the nation; Hawaii is among the least.

It's possible there was a regional factor beyond state pride. Because of the time difference - Hawaii is six hours behind the East Coast - viewers might enjoy a less-crowded calling period to cast votes.

Seems to me like it would be infinitely more fair to have, like you said, only one vote per number allowed. Sure, lots of folks would still vote more than once, but probably not more than two or three times, most of them. I'd only be able to vote twice myself, once from my home phone and once from my cell phone. If I wanted to be a freak about it, I could run down to work and vote from four more phone lines and maybe hit a couple pay phones along the way. I might be able to phone in ten votes total, at the most, and it would be so inconvenient, I'd never do that. A one-vote-per-number thing would come a lot closer to guaranteeing that the winner was the person the most people liked.

I actually called it correctly. Jasmine wasn't very good, but she's really cute and she cried so lots of extra people voted for her. As for Latoya, It doesn't matter how good your voice is if you don't have (or show) any personality. Hell, I've watched it twice now and I still can't remember what she sang.

My predictions: Jasmine will go next week in a backlash from this, and Diana will win.

I have to admit that I was not into Latoya. I don't think she has any personality, it's true. Jasmine though is not much better. She should have gone first but neither are worthy of winning. Fantasia brings those aspects together better. Diana is just not doing it for me. I listen to old kelly performances today and she was way better than these women trying to hit notes and failing, jasmine, diana, and la toya. Fantasia knows her limits well!

Xita,

The only thing I disagree with you on is that, La Toya did know her limits. Her voice was very controlled. Fantasia is the same way, but there's no way La Toya should have gone home. It should have been Jasmine.

She has a nice voice, but she doesn't know how to control it. She's pitchy and she can't hit high notes without straining her voice.

I'm still voting for Diana. I see a whole lot of potential with her and America obviously agrees. I can see her winning this. :heart

I don't know, maybe their voices are getting strained but Latoya's part in the group sing of Donna summer's songs hurt my ears. She was pitchy and off key, so was Diana and so was Jasmine.

Fantasia! :heart

I thought Jasmine did better this week. I think tonight has shown us Jasmine's absolute best, and it's just not good enough. Bless her heart.

Diana was good and I had to toss her a vote. Took me almost ten minutes to get through. I think Diana's just going to keep getting better as she gets older. Anyone who's seen the movie Drop Dead Gorgeous knows exactly why I was howling with laughter when she sang "Don't Cry Out Loud." Lord have mercy. Was a good song for her, though.

Fantasia was, as always, awesome. And it took me more than 15 minutes to get through for her. Still trying. That girl is NOT going home tomorrow if I have anything to say about it. Hell no. But whatever happens to her, it's clear she's going to have a career now. If Clive would have given her a contract on the spot in a basement in Kansas, Fantasia's sure to be a star. Well, she already is, really.

ETA: Oh, yeah, I forgot. Fox says the phone lines will be open for FOUR HOURS for final voting next week. Yay!

Diana! Diana! Diana!

WOW... she was wonderful tonight, especially with that last song that she sang. :heart I swooned! I voted for her twice. Once on my phone line and again on my parents line. Her and Fantasia are definitely not going home tomorrow.

Fantasia! :love That's all I have to say. Even if she doesn't win next week, she's already won. Clive Davis has her name and I think she pretty much walked herself into a record deal.

Till tomorrow...

Diana and Fantasia!!!

Wheeewwww...

I don't want to vote next week!! :sob Can't there just be a tie? *whimpers* I know that won't happen, but still...

Their both winners though. I still think Diana is going to win. I'm not sure why... I just have a feeling.

I'll say this though, as soon as Fantasia's CD comes out, I'll be buying it!! :banana

Ooooh... did anyone else see on the news, the coverage with Clive Davis?? He said that if Fantasia doesn't win Idol, he's still going to sign her!

:grin

I think Jasmine knew she was going home tonight. I'll miss seeing her, but I think the right decision was made.

Well Jasmine was the right choice to go, so now it sets up a very good finale.

I always liked Diana, but Fantasia got on my nerves (well her voice did.) But in the past several weeks, she's really grown on me. To the point that whoever wins next week, I'll be happy with the outcome.

I think Diana has a better voice, but Fantasia is a better performer. Not to say that Diana is a bad performer or Fantasia's voice sucks, but for me, that's their biggest strength and we'll see how it all plays out next week.

Whatever happens, it's going to be a great show.

Re: Fantasia!

Postby tyche » Thu May 20, 2004 1:45 pm

I was really hoping that the final would be a showdown between LaToya and Fantasia, but now I'm just going to root for Fantasia. I agree that Fantasia is a better performer, and I agree with what Simon said a while back: that Diana doesn't really have much stage presence (though she has got better in the last few weeks.) I think it's because she's so young - without exception, all the most memorable singers in this competition have been older than 16 or 17.

In a way I feel bad saying this, because it's not Diana's fault that she doesn't have the stage presence - it's just that she's young and doesn't have the singing experience or life experience which (imo) would make her a more interesting performer.

I think that, if they want to get good performers - as opposed to just good singers - in next years' competition, they should probably raise the age limit by a couple of years. Surely the whole music industry will not fall apart if the older age limit is 26 instead of 24.

Re: Fantasia!

Postby maudmac » Fri May 21, 2004 3:44 pm

lol, tyche, I think the music industry would be much improved, actually, if there were less children in it and more adults. Alas, it's obvious that 16-year-olds on the show means lots of 16-year-olds in the audience, and that's exactly whose brains the advertisers want to sink their filthy talons into.

I would love to see them raise the age, though, but I'm convinced they won't.

God forbid there ever be any good music on the radio anymore. :sigh
