hi everyone,

it's great to hear that so many schools have a gsa/club etc. i'm really surprised. i went to a crap school in the uk, and spent most of my time hiding from the hard types, but i did come out kind of in a big way after the end of year dance. this was not my best moment. oh no. i kissed my gf on the dance floor in front of the headteacher. luckily, some of the teachers were v cool about it (ie my drama teacher and maths teacher) but others got really freaked out. especially because i was head girl. like i said, not a good idea.

i'm so impressed that there are all these societies and things at schools. i wasn't at school that long ago at all but i couldn't imagine a club... i just waited till i went to uni and it all got better!

take care,

m

High School pride

Postby AmberBensonRockzMyWorld » Thu May 01, 2003 4:46 am

Hey all... this year I started the GSA in my school...'Cos it's my last year, and I wanted to do something that was worthwhile and would stay around for awhile. There's a lot of kids in it, It's amazing...the majority of them are Freshmans and sophmores...so, that's a good thing, 'Cos they'll keep the GSA running when I'm gone. :) :banana Anyways... I have a lot of pride in school...I have rainbow shoelaces, a rainbow pin on my hat (When I don't feel like doing my hair that good) and I have stickers that say...'Honor Diversity', 'Your not my type (in rainbow :) )' and 'Always forward, never straight' all around my binders. :) My family thinks I'm "Too open" LoL. HeHe, I don't know...maybe I am... but, hey...I'M OUT AND I'M PROUD! Lmao. Take care kittens.

Wow! I am going into HS next year and I am...thinking of :puke at the thought. But in my Middle School I do the Day of Silence, wear my Kitten shirt ect, ect. My school won't let it go any farther than that. They say that "They don't want to endorse un-healthy lifestyles." Screw them! :boot :pride

I have dated 1 girl to date and she...well, broke my heart. But it was a liberating experience nonetheless. I am hoping that once I get to HS there will be more opportunties for me to meet other gays/lezi/bi/trans people. :grin :D

I am glad that you started a thread for the yonger contingency of Kittens. I can't wait to post again.

Ittybittykitty - One of our Youth Pride organizers here in San Diego worked on the first Boston Youth Pride. . . She was so excited about it all. . .

PunkNerd - Some parts of California are 'redneck town' ish. . . It's just that GSAs have to be started by active students, and a lot of places don't have them. . .

Modjadji - it rocks that you can still be comfortable with yourself at this point, no matter what your surroundings are. Just think of how many other people there might be in a similar situation. .

the big pineapple - at least you can have a club, though. . .

A lot of administrations have tried to ban them, but we kittens in the States have the wonderful Equal Access Act on our sides. . .

In other news, I went to prom with my girlfriend on Friday. She lives across the country, but I flew her out for the event. I won prom king, and my queen was a lovely queer girl (actually, two of the three candidates for queen were). . . Good stuff.

Well im still in High School, well the sixth form in a british high school im 17 coming up 18 and i'm bi sexual (something that this board helped me deal with and i will be eternally gratefull for). Now im in a weird situation cause i have a very nice, kind, good looking wait for it........... boyfriend, so im not shouting my sexuality from the school roof, but my close friends know not to be suprised if one day i turn up with a girl on my arm and they all know about my AH and AB obbsession. One of my best friends is the captain of womans football team, where quite a few of the players are lesbains, but they are the only interacting ive had with other lesbains or bi sexuals, and to be truthful none of them are my type there is one openly gay boy in my year at school, but we run in different circles so ive never spoke to him before and he has a female friend who is rumored to be a lesbain who is good looking in a butch way, so u never know if things dont turn out right between me and my lad and those rumours are true ;)

But what i was getting to before i got sidetracked by the cute girl was ive realised that i like girls as well as boys (which may make me greedy!) and im in a strong relationship with a boy so even if i never experience the act of love with a woman at least i know that i never lied to myself if that makes sense.

And at my high school there is no clubs, its a rough inner city north east school, where it would be ripped apart the minute it began, which is a sad thing

my high school started a gay/straight alliance this year. i think it's great, but i'd never have the courage to be a part of it. i'm not really so comfortable with it yet, but i wish i was : i bet it's good for all the people that can though. my school had already been so harsh towards students. last year during diversity week, people came to our classrooms and educated us about gay/bi issues, and it made the paper the next day, everyones parents were outraged and so were some of the students so my principle won't allow anything do do with it again. ever since then i dunno, i don't even know if the gsa will make it next year. besides like the art club & some of the teachers, everyone at my school is extremely homophobic. so i choose not to be a part of it, even though i want to....if that makes sense.

I've been tripping from sipping the dripping dirty water tap.

Being gay/lesbian in H.S. kicks ass. I just graduated this year and I was honored for being the only open person about it. Everyone else was "bi" so they say because for some reason it's cool to be bi but not lesbian. But yeah, I didn't care and it was so much fun. For random reasons I would just say, "yep, I'm gay" and people just laughed. I'm sure if I were a male it would have been a different story, however. I don't what everyone else's schools are like but my advice is to just be yourself and not care what other people think. I know it's a lot easier said than done but it's so fun to be able to just shout out during class how gay you are. lol Don't worry about other people though and have a fun time with it. Take care and good luck to all the entering fresh.

Best wishes,

Im in sixth form in my High School and have been studying there for six years.

i came out to my friends about two years ago and the news travelled fast, by the end of the week my whole year knew, everyone was really good about it, they werent really bothered.

I never had any problems but the years below are pretty awful, they yell and say stuff, but it never bothered me because i figured i wasnt gonna let them make me feel bad for just me being me.

My girlfriend who is in the year below has had alot of trouble, shes been sent death threats and gets regular abuse thrown at her, but since weve been together its got better due to the fact that people are scared

of me. lol...... i dont know why :wink

Every schools different i reckon, some kids are just more pathetic than others and pick on the weakest link.

There comments dont bother me anymore you learn to just ignore them.

Hey, this is a great topic.

I don't really know whether I'm out as in the whole school knows, but I know people think, and I'm out to my friends and aquaintances and even some teachers, and I have 2 friends who are also out.

It's kinda tough sometimes, especially for Nigel, cos everyone does know about him and they can be really nasty, but i think people in my school are cool about it for the most part. It's almost like its the "cool" thing to do at the moment, so many people are saying they're gay or bi. Its weird, cos a lot of them aren't, so thats kinda annoying, but its also good, cos it means people are used to it and open minded about it. Not that it means we don't have some of the MOST predjudiced people at my school, but its more about whether or not you smoke than your sexuality.

Re: great idea

Postby sprhrgrl » Thu Jun 12, 2003 3:00 am

I think that when people claim that others are saying they're gay because it's "cool," it's more of a 'they're saying they're gay because society is more accepting of homosexuality than it once was and so now lots of people are able to say that they're gay and that seems like it's a fad' thing. Because look at all the shit some of the folks people on this thread have gone through.

If someone is comfortable enough to claim that they're gay because it might be 'hip' chances are that they have the inclination in them. For example:

I moved to my high school this year as a senior. I've been superdyke the whole time. Since I've been there, two girls have come out. One of them, Pinky () has dated girls in her past without telling anyone. The other girl, Yellowy () has been boycrazy all her life.

So, says that is only coming out as queer just because she did. And I did. And that 's not really gay because she's always liked boys.

Now, I don't know. When I was closeted, I did a damn good job of pretending I liked boys. I was one of the boy-craziest girls there was. Because I was trying to pretend that I wasn't gay.

I've tried to tell many times that if says she's gay, then she's gay. She brought a girl to prom with her and has been dating her since then, they're really cute together. She was thinking of staying back in San Diego instead of going away to college as planned to be with her girl.

Is she straight? Is this just a fad? I don't care. I think that if she feels that she's gay, then she's bloody queer. And that's that.

Alright, I have to reply. It's not a claim when we say that there are people who say that they are gay/bi because they think it's cool. There really are people who will say that and it's so obvious. I'm sorry if I'm sounding all bitchy here but it pisses me off so bad when I find out someone I know was head over heels with someone who was just being gay for the moment and gets burned. (Ellen and Anne) Hey, if they think being gay or bi is cool then they can say they are all they want. I sure as hell won't be taking any numbers from people like that though.

I dunno I really don't think you can damn someone for coming out because it's "cool/hip" What if they have come out for other reasons you don't know maybe because they've got the courage from some of you stronger characters in high school, could you imagine how they'd feel if they knew that not only are they up against the people who don't accept/understand the GLBT communtity as much as the "members" of the GLBT community? Pretty tough going if you ask me. Not everyone gets who they are in high school, i know I didn't but I would've of be pretty over the moon happy if I'd had a accepting school from both sides. Try not to make it harder for those who don't fit into the deffinate "category."

Good topic

Postby Kita830 » Thu Jun 12, 2003 10:35 pm

I like this topic, it's a good idea. :D I am a 17 year old lesbian soon-to-be-senior in high school. I'm not really out at school, a few casual acquaintances know but none of my close friends know. My best friend who lives in another state knows but the ones who live here do not. Earlier in the year, people found my online journal which kind of suggested that I was gay, but I of course denied it all. There's only one openly gay girl at my school, and about 4 or 5 openly gay guys. They all aren't treated great. I live in the D.C. area, so I'd expect it to be a pretty open-minded group, but it's really not. I don't think I'll ever come out in high school because I don't want to screw up any friendships/relationships I have. I've dated guys, though not recently. I've never actually been with a girl. A lot of people at my school think that I'm gay, because my straight friends and I kind of joke around a lot, but I always deny it. I think I joke about it so I'll know who will be cool with it if I ever actually come out. I don't know why I don't admit that I'm gay. I will gladly tell people I don't know well or have just met if the topic comes up. I'm proud of who I am, I love being a lesbian, even if I've never really been with a girl. I think I'm just afraid of rejection by those I'm close to. I don't want to mess anything up by being all "hey guys, by the way, I'm gay." I don't know...it's a complex thing with me. I know there's the whole "those who truly care will stick by you"...but I'm sort of worried that there won't be ANY of those...so...I just don't tell anyone. But anyway, I'm glad there's this thread so I can see how other high schoolers deal with it all.

I also love the idea of this thread!

I'm 14, going into high school next year, and scared out of my mind to come out there.

Over this summer I've come out to two of my best friends (and another who's my girlfriend now :luv2 ) but as for being open about it at Northwood.... :paranoid I won't have any of my friends there and I get the feeling it's not gonna be as open to stuff like that as the public hs will be.

So as for being actively gay in High School? I'll see once I go there. I've barely seen the outside of the school. :D

I agree with Kita about how this thread is useful to see how other high schoolers deal with it all.

Re: Good topic

Postby LunaMuses » Sun Aug 01, 2004 12:26 am

heh, well 1) I just now saw this thread and 2) I just graduated high school a couple months ago, so am I good with timing or what? :p

I'll be 18 in a couple months, and overall my high school experience was okay. I didn't even begin to think I was gay until about halfway through my junior year, which is really a big chunk of high school. I was never particularly "girly", but it seems I (and I think alot of people) attributed my lack-of-boyfriends in general to my nerdiness (it was an awfully nice explanation for clueless lil' me ;P). I got alot of extra attention over the years for my good grades, and I think being in the spotlight helped silence me.

By the time senior year rolled around, I had gone and managed to fall (hard) for my ex/best friend, and for a few months we had a fun, angstfully thrilling secret romance. Coming out in our school would have taken alot of guts, and she didn't feel comfortble to, so I didn't push it.

Anyways, we must have been a little more obvious rather than the cleverly discreet we fancied ourselves to be. Our closer friends were suspicous, and joked at us for stealing off for 15 minutes at lunch every day, lol! And my ex told me about one girl she worked with in drama, asked her if I "was a lesbian", cause of the way I was all touchy-feely with her. Of course, I laughed my ass off at this, said, "Maybe everyone has me figured out" and went on my merry way.

Course, soon after she dumps me for a new, well-rounded Baptist boyfriend, and I pretty much don't speak to her for the rest of the school year (not even graduation, heh...), so that got some attention, I'm sure (we had been best friends for 6 years lol). I can only imagine the things people said, but hell I didn't really care at that point.

So I guess the moral is be yourself. I may have had two boyfriends, and I may have stayed in the closet, but I never really lied about who I was. Granted, no one flat out asked me, but I never said "I'm not gay" or pretended to be straight. My former boyfriends helped me realize I wasn't into guys, back in what I think of as my 'clueless' days ;P

Reading through the thread, I think it's awesome that some of you guys can be openly out, and particpate in GSAs and all those sorts of things. To me, I think the important thing though is to be happy with yourself. I got to a point where I could say to myself "I'm gay" and knew that was that, and that was the really important thing to me. Plus I'm a quiet person by nature, so in general it doesn't fit my character to go about making my sexuality known to the world (not to downplay gay pride by any means ;) )

So now that I've ranted to kingdom come, lol, I think I've finally said all I wanted to say...hopefully it'll help all you poor kittens that still have high school ahead of you!

:peace

Hey all..stumbled upon this string too..hehe I'm not in hs anymore but thought i could put in my thoughts about being a lesbian in hs. I'm now 20 and a sophomore in college. (If u do the math, I stayed home for a year:p )

Anyways, I came out in my sophomore year of hs...I think I was about 14/15 at the time. It was generally accepted since I was in a school of about 4000 students. I traveled with the group that was generally called the Freaks/ the Gay group...lol...which what is kinda funny..me and my best friend have older siblings in the Freak group from the year before. So we were just the new freak group and found out alot of our friends turned out to be bi or gay. Though we had some bad times, we all generally made it through as out and proud. I even remember one time where someone came by and asked about us. LOL... they said we were all gay and lesbians. I went straight up to the person in the middle of the courtyard and said loud and clear that not all of us were gay. That in fact there were quiet a few bi people and even a few straight people. I was proud of myself. No one seemed to bother us after that. But we were really just a group of friends of mixed up people...as in 'cliche' people..but generally the outcasts of the school. Now i'm not exactly sure if there was a GSA group in my school..I think it would have been accepted...but would probably would have taken a little effort to get it started.

I remember the looks I got and the words unsaid. I know as well as everybody else how much those hurt..but think the GSA groups let everyone into how much we are just like everyone else.

Now I'm college and in the GSA here. It's accepted somewhat. We've only had it vandalized once this last year which is good from what I've heard from years before. But yeah we have these boards put up for Opinions on major issues. And it anonymous so it went great. If they see any swear words or hateful things they take it down and put a fresh sheet up.

We had for Gay Marriage and got variety of messages. Now living in Texas myself. It's one of those big homo states. But I live in Dallas too...which has it's own Gay/Lesbian sector of the city...lol... it's weird living here...we get both good and bad responses. Now with the general issue of Gay Marriage we got some positive with people saying let you love who u want too. While the others said we were all going to hell. Since this is a major Christian college though it is a community college. Me and my friends put up a message for them about if you weren't Christian. though we never got a response back unfortunately. But it was interesting in the most.

I had to fight last week in class about why i believe in gay marriage on the issue. And I realized some people don't even see that they are treating us like second class citizens. They thought it was alright to treat us like we were lower then them. Which pisses me off. Oh well....

I wish you all luck in hs...and my recommendation to you all...Be out if you can...cause i know how much trouble it can bring out... but if you can...be out and be proud. Don't be afraid to fight for your rights. Cause that's the thing with freedom, you have the right to be yourself...don't let them oppress you. Just remember to be careful, not all as receptive as us and want to take there anger out on us. Invest in some self defense classes...they really help!! And if parents ask why...well you doing it help defend yourself which can't be a bad thing for life. Trust me. Well I'm out of steam and my sick self seems to be wearing out for the night. Take care kittens and wish you the best of luck. Peace out.

My town, too, gives a negative and positive response. I figure that it is because I live in a town with a University in the middle, which brings all types of cultures in, but also the fact that the state is considered #1 in the hick factor, hehe.

I'm only out to 2 people (I'm going to be a senior in high school this year) 1 person is my best guy friend (also my ex-boyfriend) and the other is a girl that I have liked since 8th grade. Of course, I didn't know that I liked her like that at the time though, for some reason I thought it was because to me, she was 'super cool'.

Later on though, it just kind of hit me, and I knew that what I was feeling was more than friendship, and it just grew on that. When I told her (near the end of junior year) she never said "I don't like you" but she never said "I do like you" so I have come to the conclusion that she doesn't like me that way.

My friend, on the other hand, that it was really cool that I was a 'hot lesbian' as he referred to it,lol. I wish I had the courage to come out to the school, or at least all of my close friends, but for some reason, I prefer the dark closet to the beautiful, open light.

I do wish I had somebody that I could really talk to though, besides my friend, who whenever I mention it, all he can picture is hot girl-on-girl sex (he's alot like Xander) and the girl, who I can't even look at anymore, because I'm afraid that I'll see what she really thinks of me (and I'm just plain nervous around her).

Thats my life story! :kiss

We don't really have High School where I live.. but I am just about to start the twelfth year at my school, and I guess that is like the last year of High School..

At my school, and with my friends, it has never been a big deal who's gay and who's bi and who's straight. I think most people at my school know that I'm gay.. I even brought my girlfriend (at the time) to my school once.. Of course some people reacted to the fact that she was my girlfriend, but I don't think anyone really cares..

I guess I am lucky in some ways, that I happen to live here, have this family, this school.. Cause I can be almost totally open. Of course it can still be hard sometimes, but I just don't think I could deal with being around people who have a problem with me being gay..

in reply to the whole thing about ppl calling themselves gay/bi becasue they think it's cool. I know a few people like that from my high school where they 'experiment' beucase they think its cool. When its not. Ok they want to discover their sexuality and they are ppl out there who do it do see if they are. But the people that do it purely for 'street cred' is stupid. It could end up hurting someone, which I hav seen happen with my friends. It annoys me that people do it, they're nothing cool about hurting someone because they're gay/bi and your just doing it like its a hobby then giving up.

High school, to me, is a mine feild for people and their sexuality. Some people will be okay with others around them being gay or bi but they are a large number who are imature and pick on those who are rumoured to be gay.

In my school no one is openly gay or bisexual becuase they know it will only lead to them being the outsider in social groups, which is a shame. Everyone is who they are and should be respected.

There are people who will have the secrect about being gay in their group of friends (like mine) and everyone is fine with it becuase we are all friends and respect eachother. Its the imature one's which make life difficult with people in high school understanding their sexuality, because it's hard enough as it is without them making obsene comments all the time.

I personally am not gay but like I said there are people in my group of friends that are and I was surprised at first about it, but now its a normal thing between us.

My advise to all the kittens out there who are worried to be open about being gay...be strong. Some people can handle it others can't, its jus a part of life...happens to everyone, even straight people who are running around with a b/f or g/f no one likes for example. As my friend told me once about nasty comments, be a duck...just let it roll off you and dnt soak it in thru your feathers.

:love I have nothing but respect and luv for all you kittens out there, be who you are and be proud of it, I've lived by that for a long time and its worked so far.

Well I'm 15 and just started my sophomore year. I pretty much identify myself as bi but everything is so incredibley confusing at this age that I couldn't give anyone a definite answer on my sexuality. Hell I can't even figure out what my natural hair color is (which really has nothing to do with my sexuality but I was trying to illustrate that I don't know crap, and it turned out kind of weird).

Several (several could be a little too much but its more than a couple) people in our circle of friends are bisexual and the straight ones are really supportive. Alot of us joined GSA together at the beginning of Freshman year.

The group was so great. We discussed issues and current events relating to homosexuality. We even got interviewed by a local newspaper about our views on gay marriage. We put up posters encouraging day of silence and tried to have a debate with the conservative club (which kept backing out :eyebrow ).

There were unfortunately more jerks than people like my GSA buddies. Everywhere I turned people were calling eachothers fags and homo's. Once during a drama project, we were doing a murder thing and the guys were like "the gay guy should die first because he took it too hard up the ass." "yeah he deserves it. The queer." I wish I would've slapped them. Other people were suprisingly cool too though. Like on Day of Silence these girls kept on asking me and a friend doing it all these questions about lesbians and our sexuality. It was kind of funny since we had to write out all the answers.

I switched to a new school this year that doesn't have GSA or any other clubs. It's about 1/10 the size of my school before though. Despite missing GSA alot, I really love this place. It's an arts school so most of the kids are a little different anyways. There are alot of people out and no one talks like those assholes from my old school. I'm still hoping I can visit my friends and GSA when we have an early realease.

All of you who deal with much less open schools have my full respect (as well as everyone else I suppose) for dealing with that and being the awesome kittens you are. And if it gets really bad you guys can always join me at my school;)

Yay for gay in high school!

I'm a sophmore this year, and I'm lucky to have TONS of gay people at my school.

Afew lesbians, but lots of guys, and many bi girls.

Last year we all tried to start a Gay Straight Alliance, but they wouldn't let us, so we're really trying this year.

Alot of my friends that want to start it are seniors this year, so they'll get much more respect from the office.

Lets hope it all works out!

my reply to the bi being the cool thing to do - i find it incredibly insulting most of the time. the girls i know go around pulling eachother to please the guys. they get attention out of it and dont have to suffer all the difficulties with actually being gay. they are just using the word for personal gain, they dont understand what its like being gay, they dont care.

well most are like that...you can tell if they are just abusing the word or really are curious (gaydar coming into play here hehe :p ). i encourage the ones that are curious tho :p

anyway, enough of my rant ^_^ im 16, in UK. go to typical all girls private school...only like...500 people in the whole school (thats from 3yrs old to 18yrs old). well in the senior part of the school (11yrs to 18yrs) there are like, 300/400 students, hardly any gays though. there isnt much communication within students so i dont think id know even if there was. i know in my year theres me, my gf, another girl and a bi girl i think...which i find suprising actually because there arent many people in my year. i know in the year below there are two bi girls. im friends with one of them, she says they are all pretty homophobic in her year tho so she tries to keep as much to boys as she can - poor girl! the other isnt out, i only know cause i met her at a random party and she soooo has a crush on my best friend :D (they go to hockey club together hehe).

anyway, in my year i think people are settling down to there being gays in the world...i came there two years ago and was out immediately. there were no other openly gay or bisexual people. i think i really suprised everyone. they all enjoyed using me to wind up their friends by making out i fancied these friends and freaking them out etc etc. they also enjoyed taking me out with them and attracting guys by telling all the guys they met i was lesbian. they also used to gossip and spead rumours bout who in the year i fancied and which teachers i fancied etc. wasnt too nice actually...looking back on the first year i was there. almost got with one person, but everyone knew i fancied her so they made fun of her. i think they all scared her off so she went off with some guys instead. i got to know her really well tho, which was great :D shes actually a very nice person ^_^

after the first year i got with my current gf :D also in that year. people were suprised at that too cause she'd been bi and in the closet. they found out cause we kissed at party hehe :D before long new rumours started about our sex lives of course. we had strap-ons etc had sex all the time, were only together for the sex blah blah. then these people making up the rumours came across our online diaries. decided to make their own, mocking us. saying how they were gay and together and wanted orgys with other girls and how they always having sex and all about their sex blah blah. i think they came across some reference of our sex life in our diaries or something - we dont go around telling everyone about it but its not like its a big secret either. havent really talked to them after that. i think they're running outta things to say about us now though because they're starting on a good friend of ours (shes straight). they've been spreading rumours that her gf cant get it up and stuff...she never says anything to them, she doesnt have sex with her bf anyway...

next year ive decided just to abandon hanging out with them - dont know why ive put up with it so long - and hang out with other people instead ^_^ (not that there are very many other people...slutty group, and two little nerdy groups...). although having read what everyone here has said about the gsa's, i wanna start one!! :D tho i know im not going to hehe, tiny school i go to and there arent any other clubs. plus that stupid headmaster has no interest in anything really. no interest in womens rights or anything. dont know why they put a man in charge of a girls school!! thinks hes some almighty power i swear...

sorry, back to what ive been trying to write but keep getting diverted hehe - my school is generally pretty shut-up about homosexuality. people dont talk about it, or gay rights or anything. not many people ive seen walking around with gay badges or anything. i wouldnt say its homophobic as such, just not gay friendly particularly. they are all the kinda people who dont mind gay people, as long as they arent friends or family because then they get weirded-out.

i hope im helping other people to come out of the closet and face their own sexuality tho, even if i cant start a club or anything :p
