Alyson Hannigan in Beyond the City Limits / Rip it Off

Postby Firewalker » Sun Apr 07, 2002 8:09 pm

Just thought I'd give a heads up to people who don't visit the buffy binary newgroup. The poster is putting it in alt.binaries.multimedia and alt.binaries.zeromovies. I've been a lurker on this board for a while and remember a lot of people were asking how to get this movie, well nows your chance. I wouldn't suggested for anyone who doesn't have a fast connection, because it's a very big download.

ahh, now i see why I should register. The second newgroup it's being posted to isn't alt.binaries.zeromovies, but alt.binaries.movies.zeromovies.

Just thought I should clear that up so people aren't hunting for a group that doesn't exist.

This movie's not as bad as I was afraid it would be, but honestly, it's pretty bad. Bad enough I kinda hope it never does get released. But it is without a doubt definitely a must-see for Aly fans. Her character is such a departure from Willow and Michelle. Seeing it made me appreciate Aly's acting chops more than I already did, which was a helluva lot.

Plus, you get Jennifer Esposito's lovely, lovely, lovely dimples. ;)

Usenet is an internet protocol, like irc or www or email. You must have a newgroup server, usually through your isp, though there are several free and pay services. For binary newgroups, you would have to go with a pay service, as most free ones do not offer the binary groups.

On top of that you need the appropriate software, such as Free Agent. You will also need the software to assemble the pieces, often in .rar format, WinRar being the most common.

Check your ISP's help site to see if you can get Usenet Newsgroups.

Because the size and time it takes to download binaries, in multi part attachments, it is highly recommended you have a cable, dsl or better access to the internet.

To put it simply, Usenet is a bunch of servers that pass messages to each other. It's like a decentralized message board. In order to access Usenet, you need to be able to access one of these servers. It's actually a whole lot more complicated than that, but that'll get you started.

Some people, way back, came up with a great idea of encoding multimedia files (at first pictures, now movies and more) as text ``messages'' to exchange these types of files. They did that using a type of encoding called UUencoding ... nowadays pretty much any mail reader or news reader can handle these types of files.

The only problem is, these files are huge. This leads to a few problems. One is that some news servers won't carry binary files because of the space. The other is that some news software can't handle files as large as, say, a movie. So Usenet posters generally compress the file as much as possible (using RAR) and break it into multiple posts.

alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer and alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer.repost generally carry Buffy eps. The FAQ is here and will walk you through how to download once you get connected. The same instructions should apply to Firewalker's movie post on the newsgroups he mentioned. The first step, and perhaps the hardest step, is finding a news server. The FAQ mentions some commercial ones, but your best bet is to contact your ISP. After that you can use either Outlook or Netscape or, as Rally suggested, Free Agent to access the news server. If you're using AOL, it has a newsreader built into the software. Being a Linux / Mac guy, I'm not really sure what's out there for PCs.

Hope this helps. Everything Rally said was dead on, BTW, in case you're looking for software suggestions. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

Usenet

Postby WebWarlock » Mon Apr 08, 2002 8:14 am

I used to run a usenet FAQ. But I won't bore you with techie details (unless you want them).

Here is the easy way. Click here. If it works for you then youa re good to go.

news:alt.binaries.movies.zeromovies

Of course you need a Usent or Netnews program. Like the one with Netscape, Outlook Express or Forte Agent.

Then you need to know the news server for your ISP. Typically is it news.yourisp.com or newsserver.yourisp.com or nntp.yourisp.com.

Where yourisp.com is your ISP (AOL, MSN, Earthlink).

Now for this movie and many large files on the Usenet (usenet is text only) you need a decoding program. These are usually built in. But this movie is in RAR format. That means it has been split into 60 smaller files. You will need a program to decode RAR. I use WinRAR.

I just downloaded it and decoded it, but not watched it yet. It is 700 meg. So unless you have a re fast connection or REALLY want this flick, I'd wait for the video.

Oh. insert person pet peeve here. I never rent from Blockbuster. They edit videos (or rather they only have edited videos) and they take buisness away from the mom and pop video stores. End Rant.

I might be making this up, but I'm sure I heard that BtCL was going to be released on video in the near future..?

Alyson plays a bisexual character in the film, and Alexis Denisof plays her nasty boyfriend. Aly herself didn't seem very happy with the movie, in an interview I read, though. Screencaps are/are going to be at Alyson Hannigan Corner. :)

BtCL

Postby Incarnadine » Mon Apr 08, 2002 6:48 pm

Before HDC went down we found it had first been released in the Phillipines then a couple months later in one of the Nordic countries (can't recall which one). A couple of regulars managed to get copies and a number of us were able to talk, trade, or blackmail our way into getting a VCD of it. The first half isn't very good (except for Aly of course) but it does pick up in the 2nd half. Not enough to call it good movie but enough to avoid calling it complete rubbish. Alexis really needs to work on that Russian accent.

Edit: Above post- Alexis and Aly are not a couple in the movie, Lexi (Aly) is with the other russian though they live together with Alexis and Kinski. Aly and Alexis actually have very little screen time together.

This will probably not help you Willow420, as you in the States, but I have a copy on VCD for amy Kitten in Sydney.

So if you interested, drop me an email and I will lend it to you. I live in the North (Brookvale), but work in the south (Menia), so I cover most of the city.

The VCD doesn't work on most DVD players, but if you have a CD Rom on a PC, the VCD disks have PowerDVD on it, whish runs it fine.

Oh, I too have the screen caps on my Webpage, the link is below. :)

Wow. Well I'm glad I won't have to pay to see that one. Not any mystery why it had a hard time getting distribution. This movie is typical of one that attracts actors because they think they'll get to play a meaty gritty role, but when you get it all onscreen no one really want to watch that much grit. Plus could the guy who plays Sergei be any worse? Comically bad. I also felt that the movie was really copping out on the relationship between the women. Like they were afraid to show what was really going on. This one just looks like something for Aly's audition reel. Junkie? check.

I downloaded the clips from that website. Some of them didn't download properly but god...I don't know if it's a good thing or bad thing, but the last clip did.

Does anybody get a sinking feeling when they watch that at all? Aly in "pain" mode is just a horrible, visceral, compelling thing to see. And hear. And experience.

Woah.

Autumn, I know what you mean. The clips I saw were just awful. It played so much like a student film. Not that student films are bad...but you know, it was low low budget. What was she thinking? :lol

Watching all the clips I found the movie to be quite bad. Some of the actors and the accents were horrible, and I'm a definate sucker for an accent ;) . The only real good thing about the movie was Aly and the movie even seemed to drag her down a bit.

I found two parts very hard to watch the final clip and the clip where she shoots up. I don't know why but it really got to me. Joss was right when he said that Aly is the king of pain.

RAR is a file splitting algorithm that allows you to split a large file into smaller ones.

You are going to need a program to un-RAR it. If you are using Windows, I suggest WinRAR. Search for it on Google.

It is easy to use. PAR files are the Parity files, they allow you to request which file you need in case one of your RARs is corrupt, which happens a lot.

WebWarlock: You actually seem to know what the heck you're talking about when doing such things like this. So I'll ask you.

I'm currently downloading the files with xnews (which is the only free program I've actually figured out how to work) and it seems some of the files (rar's) are not complete.

They do however have Par's listed for downloading as well.

Out of 61 rar's and 7 par's, only 35 of these seem to be complete. Do I download the incomplete files and hope that the par's complete them for me, or am I just screwed?

Pars are used to verify that all the rar files are intact.

You need to download smartpar, to run the par.0 file, it will inspect all the

rar files and recover any bad ones. You then need a rar program such as

winrar to unpack the rar files.

When this is successfully done you will have a 720MB .avi file, which still

may give you problems.

It's not brain surgery, but you need to have the right tools.

Yep, it looks pretty bad...

Postby Willowlicious » Wed Apr 10, 2002 2:06 am

I only watched three clips, but it looks pretty amateur. I'm sure Alyson did it because, at the time, it was a chance to do something completely different for her. Junkie? Lesbian? Cool! Willow was neither at the time she shot this. Who knew?! Plus, she hadn't done AP yet, so it was a chance to do a film, period.

Seeing this makes me feel a lot better about my own screenplays, let me tell ya! :) Hope springs eternal.

Now, as for that junkie stuff. Anyone else notice that Aly totally ripped off her own "high" performance in this film for her magick trip in "Wrecked"? Someone mentioned the tummy thing, but she stole all of it! She even rolled the same direction (to her right!). I'm a little surprised. Of course, maybe she liked what she came up with and thought BtCL would never see the light of day, so why waste a good junkie performance.

I also noticed that one of the "bad guys" who start the shoot out in the last clip is the guy who plays Frederico (sp?) in Six Feet Under. He's a good actor. Aly wasn't the only one wasted in this film. (Note to self: If you ever get so lucky as to have Alyson Hannigan-quality actors in one of your films, don't screw it up with a crappy script and horrible direction.)
