Women Are the Weaker Sex

by Courtney Hoffman (18)

Mentor: Alan Heinberg

Director: Amber Benson

Juliette, Desdemona, Lady M. and other heroines of the Elizabethan stage convene for a group therapy session, run by The Bard himself.

Many of you may recall that last year Amber Benson acted in Jeremy Gable's Algor Mortis. Please also notice that this year's festival begins next week! The entire festival promises to be wonderful as always (last year, I went to three of the four weeks of the festival and had a delightful time).

Hope to see many kittens at the show!

Well damn, they couldn't wait a month? I did a google to see if there was any other info on this, and you get the most interesting links when you type: Women Are the Weaker Sex Amber. Link number three was worth it. :laugh

Anyway, good to see Amber Benson is doing what she says she loves so well, namely directing. From the very brief description the play sounds interesting. Thanks for the information technopagan. :)

Yay, Amber. I'm glad she's getting work. I'd like to think that by being a talented young woman with integrity is not hurting her employment situation.

Gosh, someday I'm gonna have to get to the West Coast to see her.

Lucky West Coast Kitties!

Janice

P.S. Anyone having any trouble today with the board being verrrrry slow?

Well certainly I don't think this is a for profit kind of thing, but it's so good for Amber to get more and more experience directing. I am glad she is getting more and more experience behind the scenes.

I went to one night of this last year and was extremely pleased with all the plays that day. I am definitely going to go to at least one weekend.

What is this play about? I am not too crazy about the title.

Given the one line description in the first post I would not take it too seriously. I doubt this is an anti-feminist play. My guess is it probably pokes fun at some existing stereotypes, or maybe it really is a male chauvinist play directed by Amber, who knows. :p

Well the description says, "Juliette, Desdemona, Lady M. and other heroines of the Elizabethan stage convene for a group therapy session, run by The Bard himself."

I am pretty sure it's like Garfield says. It's written by a young girl, and from what I gathered last year, the plays tend to send out positive messages, there was never anything offending on. It actually reminds me of a short movie I read about, where all the female characters in fairytales gather to chat about their lives.

*bangs head against wall repeatedly* Why do I live in Israel? Would somebody please tell me? Oh, right, I haven't got the change to leave just yet. :sigh

Is there any chance to find a transcript of this play somewhere? :pray It sounds like something I would go to see on its own right...

The rumor is true, wow wow, big surprise!! Amber is the main actress in "Fortune Cookie Man", this musical play is two thumbs up, it’s so amused and the music were remarkable that I can’t believe it came from a 16 boy. Amber’s singing and dancing were awesome, she was marvelous tonight, huge bonus. pics here.

Amber’s directing "Women are the Weaker Sex" are also great, Johanna McKay who played Albert’s mom in Albert’s Hall had wonderful performance too.

I went again yesterday, thanks xita the free ticket for afternoon one.

The performances were amazed and Amber was incredible. Yes, Garfield she can dance, maybe because this time Buffy and Anya were not aside. I wore the Kitten cap and Amber explained to Innis Casey (who plays the main actor "Stack" in fortune cookie man) what the symbol means.

For fortune cookie man, I like the first song that Amber sang when she danced with a mop, and Stack and Dr. Zheng's fortune cookie song and Amber's second song (with Stack) in the train, actually I like lots songs and characters there, almost every pieces. But after listening too much, I can't fall sleep last night, my brain was filled with music, it's kind of side effect. I also took some pics.

Kay sent me the pictures so thanks to her I uploaded them to my server since yahoo seems to be having problems.

www.kittenboard.com/kitte...lay03.html

So I went to the 3 pm show yesterday. It was really good.

First up was "Women are the Weaker Sex." This was the one directed by Amber. I don't know much about theater or how direction affects a play, so I can't say much about how she did. Things seemed fine though. This was a good first play type of effort. It's about a meeting of women from Shakespeare's plays. This idea reminded me of a short movie I read, in which women from fairy tales gather to have a meeting. Anyway, this play kind of fell short for me because the most time was devoted to Shakespeare himself and I would have loved to have heard more from the women. It tried to make the point that women were not treated fairly in these plays, but the presentation to simplistic to be really interesting. I noticed the woman Katherine was Johanna Mckay and she was also in Albert Hall. She's fun to watch. The play overall had a nice pace and was enjoyable to watch.

The next play was "Something Good." A nice boy meets girl story and both of the young people seemed to be intelligent and that made things intersting. Largely though this was pretty straight forward and without much humor. I might have found it more interesting if this related to my life in any way shape or form.

Last was "Fortune Cookie Man." All props go to the writer of this play. It isn't flawless no , but for a 16 year old, this was fantastic. Also we must credit the director and choreographer, Daniel Henning, who is in charge of the whole Young Playwrights festival. I am fairly possitive he brought his "sensibilities" to the play.

Anyway, it's a musical. This kid even performed the music used in the play. It's very silly, the story of a fired Fortune Cookie writer and his quest to get it back. In the process he meets and falls for Fortune (Amber Benson), who is a failed writer who works cleaning trains. The only good thing about her writing is that she writes good lines but it never comes together quite right. Stack, the writer, gets in trouble with the mob, the Welsh mob. He goes on a quest to find The Lotus to get his mojo back.

There are many good songs , some that will make you laugh out loud. Highlights included Dr. Zheng's song where he fires Stack from the Chinese restaurant. Dr Zheng is played by Gedde Watanabe who has been in countless things, including Gung Ho. He was very funny and the song was just great. Also good was Amber's solo about finding her Knight in Shining Armor. Great use of the mop prop. Amber's voice was very strong especially in her normal range. It was a pleasure to hear her sing so close up and live and it was very exciting. It really made me want to just have the opportunity to hear more and more of her singing. The higher notes were there, but I think Amber isn't used to singing and dancing especially while wearing a short slip :p That's all I am saying abou that, yeah...

Another highlight was "The Lotus," played by Sherri Shepherd, who appears on Less Than Perfect on Tuesdays at 9:30 on ABC (so told me her friend who was at the play). She was very funny in all her scenes.

And the Welsh Mobster, Jingle, was a revelation at the end when he sang his song. Extremely funny, nothing like seeing a mobster dancing and singing.

Some of the songs were eh, and the plot kind of died a bit after the lotus, but it was extremely enjoyable that kid is very talented.

Amber was great in it, but I kinda felt her character was dropped towards the middle of the play. She started out as this complex character who had aspirations of being a writer and dreams of escaping her job, but then was reduced to "love interest" and shoulder ornament for Stack. I think if the play was normal length perhaps she would get to have something more to do in the second half. Her performance was great though, I feel everyone should be able to see Amber take on different characters and sing and dance!

I am very glad to have had the opportunity to go!

Xita, sorry I missed you. I saw the plays on Saturday night and the pacing of The Weaker Sex was a disaster that night. We were sitting next to the playwright and she was very upset.

I saw the whole series of plays and thought the first week was the best. I liked the musical as well and thought it was a great way to end the festival.

Now I have to find something else to do on Saturday nights...:read

Thanks for the detailed report Xita. :) I am bummed that I just missed this by little more than two weeks. I would have dearly loved to see Amber sing live and dance with a mop. Hee. Oh well, I'll get to see Xita again in a few weeks and that's even better. :heart

Grah, in my head I kept going "July 6th, July 6th," because of the June and the sixth and the darn four letter months that start with JU.

I will not argue that the stockings are great, but I will state that I have some that are gayer. (grin)

I like picture number nine in the yahoo set where she's standing with her leg cocked, and then ten where it's less so but you can see the boots. Very much with the cute.
