Amber on stage in Beautiful City

Postby xita » Tue Oct 22, 2002 12:30 am

So relativegirl and I got short notice to go see this "reading" of a play. I had no idea what that meant. It means the actors don't memorize the screenplay and read it as they act.

It was a small (really small) intimate theater. It was a large cast with a complex plot. Essentially it envolved the mob, an architect, a developer, common thiefs and witches , hee.

Amber played a witch (stripped of her powers by her mother at birth). The real "witch" was her mom who had curious powers of intuition among others. She was a volunteer at a hospital so she wore a white short lab coat type thing and jeans and sneakers. Hair was long and beautiful as always seemed particularly blonde in this lighting.

The play was really enjoyable lots of great acting. I am glad Amber gets me out to the theater cause there is something to be said for live plays. All the actors were great, they made you forget they were reading the script. Amber was of course great and adorable. It's always fun to see those things you love live, the half grin of course made a presence. I am glad I had the opportunity to go and see this and I hope she gets more chances to work on stage.

No news on anything else, pretty much went straight home after the play. It's a school night after all! :D

I did one of those a few years back. It was a musical and I was in the chorus. Usually a "reading" like that is done as something of an "audition piece" for potential financial backers.

Glad to hear that Amber's keeping busy. :)

Ooh, readings are fun. I love the experimental quality of them. And Xita, I'm glad that Amber gets you out to the theater more often, too. As much as I love movies, and would never give them up, there are so many amazing things about live theater that film and TV can never match. And Amberness, that's always marvelous fun, too. ;) Lucky hos. Sounds like you both had a lovely time.

SF, the play was "Beautiful City" by George F. Walker and Amber played Jane Sabatini. The reading was at the 2nd Stage Theatre which is one of the many theatres on Santa Monica Boulevard along Theatre Row in Hollywood.

The reading was part of The Blank Theatre Company's "Living Room Series". HIP, I'm on the email announcement list for The Blank Theatre Company, so that is how I heard about it. Several BtVS actors have been in Blank Theatre Company productions including SMG, JM, Armin Shimmerman and of course Amber.

Absolutely Julia. Los Angeles isn't London or New York, but there's an incredibly large community of actors in this town, many of whom are very talented and dedicated to their craft. On any given night of the week, there are dozens of plays you can see, many of which are smaller productions with ticket prices that rival the price of a movie ticket. It never ceases to amaze me that I can stumble into some tiny theatre and see a play performed by people I've never heard of and be thoroughly entertained. Months later that play will continue to come up in the conversations of myself and my friends and in the same time period we will have seen half a dozen movies that we never mention at all. Live theatre. It's a good thing. :)

Well now, it's a tough call as to who I'm more jealous of. ;) Glad you girls had a good time though. Theatre is a great medium; I miss working there actually. I used to see some great plays.

Hi Xita! Glad you enjoy Amber's play and I'm a bit jealous of you...:grin I'm happy Amber finds her happiness in these close-knit community of actors. Sometimes you would be amazed by the talents of these young actors, that they can be 100%better than these Hollywood people. I always love to sneak into theatre, looking for small surprises in these wonderful people. Anyway, Bravo for all of you who saw Amber on stage!

Cheers,

Boy, you're two lucky gals!

It’s really good to hear that Ambers moving forwards, doing new things. I wish I could have been there. Not that I would've seen much, y'know, with the whole fainting the moment she opened her mouth thing and all.

Does Ally ever do live plays? And if so, has anybody seen her? I could totally see Amber do little theater experimental goodness but Ally... not so much. Call me imaginationally impaired.
