Trollhunter

I caught this entertaining Norwegian movie on The Movie Channel.

It works on the same principal as "Cloverfield": you only get glimpses of the creatures, since everything is being filmed by an unsteady hand-held camera. Hilariously, it posits the existence of a Troll Department, a secret agency within the Norwegian government charged with controlling Norway's troll population and eliminating those that get out of hand. The traditional Norwegian names ("tosselrad", "dovregubben" etc.) are used for the monsters.

It's all quite clever. It's amazing what one can find while randomly channel surfing. :)

Is it this one?

If yes, it looks like a lot of fun to me, but probably not half as scary as Cloverfield. More like taking the handheld thing into the action genre instead of doing the horror/mystery thing. Also, the idea of Troll Department is just crazy. The way I remember Norway, it has a way bigger mosquito problem =)

Anyway, I wonder if I can get this movie anywhere, should be a fun movie night.

Yep, that's it. :)

I still giggle at the thought of a Troll Department. Imagine if the Pentagon had a secret unit to take care of elves, fairies and dragons. :grin

Anyway, as of this month, it's still running on American premium cable. Perhaps someone can record it for you. Also, I'm sure it will be released on video before long.

Yeah, I guess I'll just have to wait for a DVD release then, since it's sort of hard to get to something from American premium cable if you live in Germany. It is already ridiculously hard to find the new episodes of a show that is on regular TV. We don't even have Netflix *sigh*

Oh, okay, I just googled it and actually found a DVD on Amazon, the strange thing is just that it's only in German, Norwegian and French. Is it worth it importing an version with English or is there really... not that much dialogue at all? It looks like a movie where the talking is not that important (maybe except for "Troooooll, oh no, oh no, TROOOLL!"). On the other hand, when the original is Norwegian, the German translation might fit better than English, hm...

All of the dialogue is in Norwegian. So, you would probably want a version with German rather than English subtitles (unless, of course, you speak Norwegian).

Okay, I ordered it now. If you are secretly part of a marketing company, I officially congratulate you: you have sneakily talked me into buying it =) and sadly, I don't speak Norwegian and decided for the German version, since it's, well, cheaper than the imported version (I wonder why...). I just asked because I usually prefer the English sync, the German ones tend to be very bad.

So, anyway, I am looking forward to be watching this movie in a few days, and I'm wondering if I will like it. I have read reviews that said it was a really good film, and some that said it was a real disappointment.

If the soundtrack is in the original Norwegian with German subtitles, I'm sure you will enjoy it. By the way, your English is really excellent. Did you live in the US or UK at some point?

No, I'm not a marketing person, just a movie-lover (and W/T fan, of course) who is close to retirement age. :)
