Actualy it competes with "Miss Match" on NBC which is what I watched tonight. It was realy very cute and more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Plus it has Alicia Silverstone in it who is rumored to be gay. I have to support that... plus she's cute... plus the girl that plays her best friend is cute. I'm already writing the fan fic in my head:devilish .

"Divorce attorney by day, matchmaker by night?" Well, I'm glad Ms. Silverstone's getting the work (esp. if said rumor is true), but wake me if she starts matching two men or two women! :p

I watched the pilot of Joan of Arcadia, but I'm not sure I'll stick w/ it. The cast is very promising, w/ the always reliable Joe Mantegna and Mary Steenburgen (BTW, are she and Ted Danson still together?), and I think Amber Tamblyn might be capable of holding our interest (What marriage was Russ "When you're a Jet" Tamblyn on when she was born? 3rd? 4th? ;) ). But as for the plot? Well, it's not as obvious as "divorce/matchmaker," but I'm not convinced it won't be a teen Touched by an Angel. I'll give it another week or two before I make my viewing-commitment decision.

GG And where's Arcadia? I was thinking California---maybe filmed in Vancouver---but what was w/ the *Maryland* flag? :confused Out

Yep, I'll be giving it a few more viewings to see if it hooks me. I did see Miss Match when I was surfing during the commercials. I'm stubborn though, so I kept up with my choice!

And oh, Alias starts tomorrow night. :banana

I watched it, not sure if I liked it. I am used to the realism of Law and Order, so this was a bit too glossy and over-produced for me, and she seems a little... off, but maybe she'll grow into that role, she's definitely nice to look at. I'll give it another shot.

I watched it and liked it.

Much more likeable character than Najara on Xena! Not hard to do though.

I don't really watch many "law" type shows so I don't have much to compare with. Ally McBeal so does not count!

I don't know how to reply to the spoilers without spoiling so I'll just say interesting and I agree with most of it.

Re: High Price Of Fame: Out

Postby Warduke » Mon Sep 29, 2003 9:40 am

E! will be showing High Price Of Fame: Out on October 1st.

Quote:
Out: The Straight Dope on Being Gay in Tinseltown

Premieres: Oct. 1, 9 p.m.

Encores: Oct. 3, 8 p.m.; Oct. 4, 3 p.m.; Oct. 5, 12 p.m.

Hollywood--where blockbusters, prime-time television and PG ratings drive the business--is a hard place to be different. And nobody knows this better than those who've had to hide in the closet to become a big-screen leading man or America's sweetheart. And even now, as mainstream media goes through a phase in which gayness and gay issues are trendy, the reality isn't all laugh tracks and high ratings.

This door-busting episode of High Price of Fame: Out, premiering Oct. 1 at 9 p.m., pulls the covers off of a once secret side of Hollywood. We show you how hard it has been for gay and lesbian artists, and we talk with those who've helped change the landscape of pop culture.

You'll hear the stories of those who, in recent years, have "come out" and found great success, from k.d. lang to Ellen DeGeneres to Ian McKellen. We'll dig into the growing presence of out homosexuals on television, from Will & Grace to Rosie O'Donnell to Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Hear from actors and singers on coming out of the closet and on the strong stigma still encountered by Hollywood's gay community. After so many legends having had to live a lie, queer is going mainstream--and E! brings you the movement's secrets and successes.

Halle Berry as Catwoman

Postby kajo 2000 » Tue Sep 30, 2003 3:06 am

[I hope this is right place to post this - I know some Kittens are fans of Halle Berry, so they might be interested in this article about her new movie]

From Time Magazine:

FIRST LOOK

NO, YOU CAN'T PET HER

The cat is finally out of the bag. HALLE BERRY slinks into a strapping new ensemble this week when filming starts in Vancouver for Catwoman. The Oscar-winning actress plays the Felonious Feline (see also: Princess of Plunder, Mistress of Malevolence) from the Batman series, a role made famous by Eartha Kitt in the '60s TV show and reinvented by a neoprene-clad Michelle Pfeiffer in 1992.

Berry's leather cat suit for the 2004 film is "very bare, very urban, very downtown," she says. Her character, Patience Price, is a scientist at a cosmetics company who transforms into Catwoman — or should we say Sex Kitten? — to take on her nefarious boss, played by Sharon Stone. Benjamin Bratt as a detective is the love interest for Berry's Catwoman, who is both villainess and heroine. "She's not Superman," Berry says. "She's not trying to save the world." Instead, like a pampered house pet, Berry says, "Catwoman is out to save herself." Could be quite a purr-formance.

You can view a photo of Halle in her Catwoman costume at Cinescape.

Re: Joan of Arcadia

The plot thickens! What did y'all (who watched Joan) think of the androgynous skater-grrl, Grace somebody (started w/ a "P" I think)?

W/ my own andro/gender-queer tendencies, I was mightily impressed by both the actor (didn't get her name, but I will look online for it), and the portrayal for its "out-there" qualities. Good googly-moogly, her voice was lower than the boys!

The fact that Joan's parents (particularly her father) commented on Grace's "indeterminate gender" suggests that this issue will come up again: how, I can't say. Is she a lesbian? Trans? Intersexed? Definitely intrigued. (and if Joan should happen to show an interest . . . :pride )

GG Of course, all of this will unfold w/in the wider mystery: just what *is* God up to w/ Joan? It looks like this show *isn't* going to be Teen Touched By an Angel, and for that, it looks much better! :clap Out

I'm not sure if we'll be seeing more of Grace or not. It seems like the show may jump around a bit.

L.A. Dragnet

Well, let's give it up to L.A. Dragnet as the first show to have a crazy lesbian killer. Two teenage girls beat and then burn the former girlfriend of one because she left her for a guy. Wow-a show beat Law &Order this year:)

After reading all sorts of reviews that trashed this movie, I was pleasantly surprised by it. One of them said that the plot was nearly incomprehensible. I think the reviewer may have been asleep in the movie. It wasn't hard to follow at all.

And Diane Lane is just wonderful. I seem to really enjoy Hollywood redheads lately.... Diane Lane, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, and of course, Aly!

Oh, and there is a lesbian presence in the movie, but I won't write about it until I can figure out that spoiler code.

Lesbian Back on JAG

Postby Garner » Tue Oct 14, 2003 10:13 am

I would just like to mention that the lesbian pilot (whose name I forget, sorry) appeared on JAG once again this last Friday. She was out of the military but had settled issues with her girlfriend and come to terms with being openly gay, and was working as a pilot for the CIA. They did have her get captured by the bad guys, but there was not even a hint of a rape or assault scene and she was released through a deal rather than a "rescue" attempt. I thought she came off fine as a capable pilot and person who happened to be gay. The kind of background character that is needed more on TV. If anyone else saw it let me know if you agree. If you didn't see it, it is worth checking out at least that ep in reruns. I don't think the character will be back next week, but you never know on that show.

Because of my political/ethical beliefs I wouldn't go near a show like JAG w/ a ten-foot peace sign, but it's good to hear that they're at least opening some minds on this issue. Perhaps they're trying to show just how ridiculous the "Don't Ask-Don't Tell" ban is?

GG And yet I watch "Alias," w/ no less (if wildly fictionalized) U.S. firepower. I know, I know, such is hypocrisy! :rolleyes Out

Re: Lesbian Back on JAG

GG, though I expect a lot of the politics of those here to cause them to avoid JAG, they aren't always Raa, Raa US propaganda. Oh, there is some, but not as heavy handed as one might expect. I do believe, if I remember right, that the first time the character was on the show it was a comment on the stupidity of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell idea. Each time the character has been handled intelligently and well, which is more than I can say for a lot of other shows. To me, she has not seemed cliched and the situation fairly realistic (for TV at least.) In terms of reaching people, it also seems to me that this is the exact sort of place you want to stress that lesbians and gays are just the same as everyone else: to a normally more conservative audience. They are the ones that really need the education. Who among the JAG audience is likely to have watched W/T?

Waaaay late but I just heard on the BBC there are new AbFab episodes starting this evening! 21:00 UK time and 22:00 European time. AbFab certainly deserves its own thread but I haven't got time now; gotta set that vcr!

We had an AbFab thread, maybe it was moved to the archives. I'll dig around for it later. :grin

I like JAG, Harm Rabb annoys me most of the time, but the lovely Major more than makes up for it. I think it is a pretty decent show. I like courtroom dramas, and that is basically what it is, but with the right dose of humour at times, and not as depressing as other 'legal' shows can be. Anyway, thanks for the tip. :) I will have to keep an eye out for that ep on Dutch TV.

Edit: Damn, that was a funny ep. :laugh

I can't find that thread though. :confused , we do have the British Sitcom thread, but I think AbFab deserves a thread of it's own.

Nope I haven't, heh.

I'd like to recommend Freaky Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis. She switches bodies with her 16 year old rebellious guitar playing daughter one day before her own wedding. It has all the potential for being very cheesy, and it has what you could consider a cheesy ending, but it did not come across that way. It was one of the nicest movies I have seen in years, it was funny, did not feel boring for a second and Jamie Lee Curtis was just great. The girl who played her daughter reminded me of Aly a lot, especially when she was her mother. The facial expressions and all those freckles too, hee. I'll be getting this when it comes out on DVD, it is definitely rewatchable.

ETA: I hear it is a remake, remakes tend to be iffy, I haven't seen the original so I can't compare, but judging this one on it's own merits I still say it was a very sweet and loveable movie, and well, Jamie Lee Curtis...:heart

Xita, if you can possibly get to see the original (maybe hidden at your local rental store) I definitely recommend it. It was one of my favorites when I was younger (had I think my first real crush at the age of 5-lol). Anyway, it has Barbara Harris (the mother) and Jodie Foster (the crush, I mean the daughter). I remember it being very funny, but with the 70's filmography. Go get it!!!!!!!!!!!

Goldfish Memory

Postby Hyo Shin » Thu Oct 23, 2003 8:47 am

Any body seen this movie? It's a sweet Irish comedy about a very complcated relationship of a varied bunch of Dubliners.

Basically it's an omnisexual dyke drama. Just read this synopsis.

Quote:
Written and directed by Liz Gill, Goldfish Memory chronicles the ups and downs of several Irish singles who, like goldfish, seem to have a memory span that's simply too short to prevent them from repeating the same actions ad nauseam. Lives intertwine when a middle-aged professor (Sean Campion) with a nasty tendency to chase after his pupils breaks up with one of his conquests (Fiona Glascott) in order to repeat the pattern with another student (Fiona O'Shaughnessy). Shunned, Clara (Glascott) goes on to have a lesbian affair with a local reporter (Flora Montgomery), who turns out to be more than a little possessive. In an effort to get away from the needy reporter, Clara manages to attract the woman who had stolen the affections of her professor in the first place. Goldfish Memory was filmed entirely in Dublin, Ireland, and also features Keith McErlean, Peter Gaynor, and Jean Butler. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide
