I just finished reading Parenting for a Peaceful World by Robin Grille. I'll admit that my wife pretty much put it on a pile and told me that it was my highest reading priority. But I'm very glad to have read it. It goes throughout history, describing parenting practices and techniques over the years. My wife told me a few chapters to avoid reading because they would have upset me too much. The book describes a direct link between strict/violent child rearing techniques in a society and events such as the Holocaust and other genocidal events. It then progresses forward to more "advanced" techniques and then to techniques making inroads now. The book ends with some very uplifting and optimistic thoughts on current trends as well as some disheartening facts about how little it would cost to provide care and education for every child on the planet (which we're not spending). If you can find a copy (I think it may only be available in Australia), I highly recommend it.

JustSkipIt - if you enjoy parenting books or books on child psychology in general you might like one I've finshied reading a while ago called They F*ck You Up. It's upsetting at times, but it's an interesting read. It's more or less about how violent child rearing can create a violent society, and different child rearing techniques And also, I'd reccomend any book by Alice Miller.

Another book I've read lately is The Abortionist's Daughter, by Elizabeth Hyde. I really liked it, the writing style flowed quite nicely. It's basically about an abortionist who is murdered in the begining and goes into all the events leading up to her death. But it's not a huge heavy handed thing, even in the more disturbing parts.

I just reread a book I really love called Walking Home. It's by Kelly Winters and it's about her experience walking the Appalachian Trail. The experience is soul-shifting for her and for pretty much everyone she encounters. I'd classify it as a mildly g/l in that at the beginning of the book she's basically bi and during her walk one of the things she realizes is that if she's to have a relationship, it will be with a woman. It's quite a beautiful book.

Just finished THE BOOKKEEPER OF KABUL. Oh my, what a powerful book. It shows just how little a Muslim woman in Afghanistan has in determining the direction of her life. The male is all powerful and even her sons have the discreation to lord it over her. If you ever doubted about whether to be supportive of feminist causes try reading this book. This is a non-fiction and scary book. It left me with my mouth hanging open in disbelief.

I'm reading Jane Eyre right now. It's pretty good so far and I find it easier to read and follow compared to the Jane Austen novels I've been reading. I'd recommend it to people who want a novel from that time period but don't want to read Jane Austen. It's in first-person perspective, which is nice.

I'm looking for a good lesbian romance novel. I'd like one where the two characters are opposites but attracted to each other. Like maybe one is a out and proud lesbian and the other is a conservative, religious type and the book goes through their struggle from disliking each other to falling in love. Or any other general suggestions would be great. Thanks.

A little off the traditional beaten path of lesbian books, but still... my favorite is "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" by Fannie Flagg. The movie is great but misses a lot of the not-so-subtexty-text of the novel. Go pick it up.

Stringsrock if you haven't read "Tipping The Velvet" by Sarah Waters then I'd recommend that book to you.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I've just read an amazing book. I'd like to recommend The Kite Runner to every book loving Kitten out there. It’s a great read and an intimate look at the politics of Afghanistan. Very interesting. :)

Great movie too! There is a line in the movie that stood out to me, "When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth." Touching story!

I'd recommend Loving Wanda Beaver by Allison Baker to anyone who likes reading about peoples' lives. The book is atually several short stories and a novella, about people going through very different things. The writing is good and has a great flow, very readable, and the characters are interesting. The style of the novella is a little different and less to my taste, but the short stories are beautiful and really get inside the characters' feelings. The stories are completely disconnected, each with their own characters and unique situation, so there's no need to read the whole book. It's great if you want to read 20 pages, or the whole 200.

A must read!!
Scars And Stilettos by Harmony Dust

This woman is just amazing. She was exposed to pornography at the age of 4. She was raped repeatedly. She was sexually abused by both men and women. She later lived a double life as a UCLA college student by day and a stripper by night. She overcame the life she had lived and got her Masters in Social Welfare. She founded an organization called Treasures. This organization helps women in the sex trade to find their true value and worth by getting them out of that life. Let's face it a young girl doesn't grow up and dream of becoming a stripper. A lot of the women that are in this sort of industry are often abused and have a troubled past. Harmony was one of them. So she dedicates her life to helping the same women get out of that life. It was a privilege meeting her and donating money to her cause. Just an amazing story and woman!
