Justin – Yes. And thank you for the answer.
So Faith's a police officer now, a bobby, a copper etc.
I’ve never head of a bobby but in know in Love Actually, Hugh Grant calls his security guy his copper so I get that one. Here I’d say it’s cop, fuzz, pig, bacon (the last couple from general delinquents and delinquent wanna bes), or “THE MAN” (my favorite).

Yes, I’d say it was Wilkins but no he didn’t turn into a giant snake (quite obviously). I’d agree with your assessment on what constitutes a good graduation ceremony. Of course it rained through ours and they spontaneously moved it ½ mile from the football stadium to the basketball gym so what do I know about a reasonable graduation?

Tee hee: Giles and a digital camera. Don’t you think Faith could bring him into the digital age? Thanks always, Justin.

russ – Sorry you were feeling yucky. I hope you’re feeling better but I know a lot of folks who have had the crud, both kids and adults. I’m glad that the next installment could make you day a little better.

Reading this story at one year intervals, I can understand Willow's feelings of not really knowing what's going on.
Believe it or not, that’s intentional. I know you’re saying to yourself, “You are intentionally making the reader feel that he doesn’t know what is going on? What kind of writing is that?” It’s kind of fun as a writer to have that freedom. I’m tossing out the structure of their lives and the reader is responsible for filling in the gaps. Some of the backstory I know but haven’t told and other parts, I haven’t made up so any interpretation you like is just as correct as any other. See? Fun! :bounce

it's the discussion in the diner that is most important to the W/T relationship.
Again I say, darn tootin!

I have faith in Faith, with her "this isn't over." Obviously she's always been more sensitive and perceptive than it would appear; let's hope she can talk some sense into her friend.
Do remember that this is the same woman who pointed out Willow’s use of the Finey McFine. She’s incredibly sensitive and fiercely loyal. We’ll see if that is enough…

"I was writing a long piece for another series" you say. Something to look forward to.
Hmmm, Watson noticed I said that and that you responded. Not sure what she thinks of my hint dropping but … time will tell.

Thanks.

mole
I think the once-a-year glimpses into Willow's and Tara's lives leave lots of room for the reader to come to conclusions about their relationship, etc. It's great stuff.
See, that’s exactly what I was saying above to Russ. I’m allowing the reader to do a lot of the work of the fic which is kind of fun because each reader is experiencing a different story.

I REALLY wish you'd fill in some of the gaps for us. I so want to hear the Willow babble with Tara about missing bits of each others lives and possibly growing apart and is this going to work and what if we fall out of love. Perhaps it's the angst-hound within me, but I would love to see/read this scene.
Hmmm. Good suggestion.

I'll be a good kitten and use my imagination.
Yay but good whining. I’m glad that the long-distance relationship issues are coming through. Honestly, I have no experience at all. I’ve never been away from anyone with whom I was in relationship with for longer than a week or two. So thanks for the validation.

Good questions re: Frank. Sorry about the unpleasant day and thanks for the comments.

Darth Pacula – G’day and all that stuff. Tee hee.

I think that the assumption that Faith is doing more than just wandering around Sunnydale for no good reason is a valid one. Peroxide Pest? I haven’t heard that but I like it. I have mixed feelings on Spike personally. On one hand, he’s a good character but too much of him is, well, too much. He’s good for cutting through the bs (kind of like Anya).

What's with the Frank fixation, Debra? Argh!
LOL!

One shameful admission I have to make; it took me all day to work out that PDA meant Public Display of Affection.
I had it spelled out at first but then I decided that they would definitely use the acronym, being 20 years old (approximately). I agree that Faith’s actions as matchmaker were unexpected. Thanks so much.

taralicious – Thanks. Well, Faith has been saying for years that she wanted to be a cop and much as Buffy hated the idea, it seems to be a pretty good fit. In a few updates we’ll have some exposition on her decision making process I believe. I’m glad that everyone seems to agree that I’ve hit on the long distance relationship thing. As I said, I have no experience with it so I’m glad I’m guessing well.

Willow and Tara have such a bond between them that petty jealousy or frustration shouldn't be a problem in their lives.
Let’s hope…

SallyMcFine -
Debra, yay for an update to Menorah Tales!
It would have been a day earlier but as I sat down to finalize it and get it posted, what was there on my browser but an update to UberSmut? Well, that had to take precedence and between it and the update to Written in the Stars, this was just pushed to the next day. At least it keeps us from competing for views I guess… (especially if neither of us posts the same day as Coming Back or Neverland, tee hee).

I agree that Willow and Tara and Faith are very close. They have certainly traveled far but they knew not only how important it is to Faith but that her mother is not likely to have made a significant effort. As has been noted before, in ways these three (along with Giles and Mr. & Mrs. Rosenberg) are trying to fill in holes in each other’s lives. (Actually, I guess that’s kind of what we (people) all do). I think they also have an awareness in the back of their minds that her time might be limited (Slayers rarely are around for the early retirement incentives are they?) so they want to make the best of it.

I'm curious about the Frank thing, and I can't quite seem to suss it out. Is Willow worried about how he asked Tara out many years ago? Or did something happen between Frank and Tara in medias res? It's ambiguous. On the one hand I can't see Willow being jealous about something that never even happened many years ago, but on the other hand I can. Did you purposefully leave it up to the reader?
Well, yes. All good questions and I promise that I’ll answer some of them a little bit.

Also, seems like both of the girls are going to graduate school.
Keep in mind that Willow is a year ahead of Tara in school. Tara is a sophomore and has barely settled on a major while Willow is a junior and is highly sought after enough to need to start to do some serious planning. You make good points re: life starting but I definitely think that Tara doesn’t want to hold back Willow’s potential.

I’ll pass on your comments and concerns to W/T when I talk to them. Ha ha.

watty – Watty has gone from HiddenWatson to Watson to Watty. Soon she’ll just be Joanne Smith from Idaho and her phone number will be listed by her avatar.

Fast movement? Hmmm, I'm a gutterbrain today and the combination of "fast" and "movement" reminds me of and not in an innocent way either.
I can so relate. I’ve been a gutterbrain for like the last week and it doesn’t seem to be lessening. I mean really…

Like I said above, W/T both know how incredibly important the graduation is to Faith.

Am I going against the trend when I say I'd prefer to see Willow go to MIT rather than UNC. I don't know jack about US schools, and nothing against UNC, though I suspect MIT is a tad more prestigious than UNC. If Willow is accepted and she doesn't go, there may come a time sometime in the future that she's gonna regret the decision. A tiny part in her will resent Tara for making her sacrifice a better option because they can't wait another few years.
You make a good point. I would say that MIT is probably one of the most respected schools in the country in math, engineering, architecture, etc. so your guess is right on.

Very astute, my friend. Now matter how strong the relationship is, they can't exactly share a life together until they, um, share their lives together.
Yep, I’d say that’s a barrier in virtually all long distance relationships.

p.s. Aren't the kittens great? They noticed that you've been writing for another series. Looking forward to that.
You are? Hmmm… :confused

Thanks always.

I can totally see Faith as a cop. She's rough and tough, but also smart and considerate - good combination. And it doesn't hurt that I'm thinking of the police uniforms from 'Demolition Man', with the really tight pants...

Anyway. Willow and Tara, spending most of their year apart, seem very realistic, and pretty well-adjusted to their situation - they don't try to hide from each other that it's hard to be apart, or ignore it themselves. And it is hard, but I hope Willow will take Tara's advice and get the best education she can - in the long run, that'll be best for both of them.

Hah! I knew Faith would cotton on to their attraction to each other ;-)

Ooo yeah. Tight pants on Faith. Definitely a plus.

I definitely think that W/T being apart so much of the year for so many years is a major strain on them. They have years more of it too and it's getting harder and harder.

Faith is fantastic so of course she knew about them. Thanks for the feedback.

I like. I'm really busy, and the previous feedback covered most of what I wanted to say, but I just wanted to pop by and say: I like.

About a year later

Tara woke slowly, content in the warm flannel sheets and thick comforter on the bed. The softness of the cotton against her skin made her feel held and happy. She opened her eyes and immediately saw the bedside table with its clock. 6:18 seemed pretty early to be waking but it was ok. Past the bedside table, she spied the menorah covered with wax where it had dripped from the first three candles. She rolled away from the bedside table and reached out, finding an empty spot and tangled sheets.

As she always did, Willow had left Tara’s robe on the foot of the bed when she got up. Tara swung her feet over the side of the bed and quickly pulled on the robe and the new addition—a pair of wool socks. Feeling more awake and less groggy, she could detect the smell of coffee in the apartment and hear Willow typing on the computer. She stopped in the small kitchen to pour a cup and looked around. The room was approximately large enough to hold one person if that person wasn’t very big and didn’t move around much. Willow had considered getting a roommate but explained that between her long hours and her wish for privacy she really didn’t want to share space with anyone even if it meant more space and a nicer place.

Tara warmed her hands on the “English Majors do it with words” cup and took a sip. The kitchen joined onto Willow’s study, a room most people would have considered a living room. Tara smiled at her lover. A living room would have contained a couch, television, stereo, a few lamps. Willow’s study held two large tables made of discarded doors on egg crates. The first table held a computer on one end and papers stretched over the remaining surface. The second, the table where the redhead currently sat, had another computer, a printer, and three cups of assorted colored pens. A chair sat just to her left as if someone had recently been studying the screen output with her but it now held three or four serious looking tomes. Low music emanated from the speakers on the computer Willow wasn’t currently driving into the ground with her relentless keystrokes.

Knowing that as involved in her research as she was Willow wouldn’t look up unless Tara made a noise, Tara leaned against the doorframe and watched her girlfriend for a few minutes. Tara liked to think that her lover had grown into herself in the last few years. When they were young, Willow had been wonderful, magical, perfect, but she had also seemed so unsure of herself. It was as if she were embarrassed of her own intelligence, awkward in conversation, and unsure of how to talk to other girls or to boys. But over the past few years, she had blossomed. College had challenged her to excel and learn. Perhaps more importantly, the school allowed her to be around similarly brilliant students. And it wasn’t just Willow’s academic achievements. She didn’t seem to put any effort into her looks but she was absolutely breathtaking in Tara’s eyes. And Tara knew that it wasn’t just her. She saw other women and men looking at the redhead when they were out and knew what the women were thinking because she thought it too.

Tara’s brow furrowed as she watched the redhead tap her foot and chew on the end of a purple pencil. Willow cocked her head, watching characters scroll on the screen and then hit a few more keys. She wondered what would have Willow working so intently on the third day of their shared vacation. Since the Rosenbergs were in Greece from December 18 through January 2, Willow and Tara had decided to spend the first week and a half of their vacation in Cambridge rather than going home.

This year Willow finished her exams before Tara and had been relaxing for a day when she picked the blonde up at the airport. This coming semester, Willow would be taking six hours of undergraduate credits to complete her degree and six hours of graduate credits as well as conducting research with her faculty advisor. Even though Willow insisted that she could go to Duke for her Master’s work, Tara knew that the redhead would be absolutely insane to give up completing her graduate studies at MIT. The research she was involved in was likely to turn into a paid position next fall if not this summer and would look great on her resume.

Tara walked slowly across the floor and stood behind Willow before gently putting her warmed hand on the girl’s neck. Willow tilted her head back and smiled. “Good morning.”

Tara leaned down and kissed the redhead thoroughly. She pulled back and looked at the complicated figures on the screen. “I thought you were done with all your work?”

Willow leaned over and picked up the three books off her chair and stacked them on the desk. Tara took the newly vacated seat and leaned over to put her head on her lover’s shoulder. The redhead reached around to wrap her arms around Tara. “I was done with my work but I couldn’t sleep so I got up and checked e-mail. Ant had sent me a note with ideas for a few more tests for the project.”

“The other research assistant?” Tara asked only half-listening to Willow’s answer. She read the spines of the books Willow moved for her. On of them was “God Created the Integers” and given that the copy Tara had given her lover last night was still on the floor of the bedroom, she wondered why Willow hadn’t told her that she already had the book rather than gushing about what great things she had heard about it.

Willow smiled, her face lighting up. “Yeah. Always thinking but funny too. You’ll love Ant.”

“I’m sure I will,” Tara said. When Willow looked back at the screen Tara asked, “Do you know how much work you need to do?”

Willow hit a few keys. “Maybe a few hours?” She turned toward the blonde and ran her hand gently along her thigh. “Then maybe we could do something fun. Go to a movie or take a long walk?”

“In the twelve degree frozen tundra?”

“Ok, so maybe not a long walk.” Willow giggled and leaned over to kiss her lover. “Maybe we can find something else to do with our afternoon.” She waggled her eyebrows playfully and Tara laughed.

“I think I’ll go take a Pilates class,” Tara said as she stood up. She leaned over and kissed Willow, who had already returned her attention to her computer screen, on the top of the head and went back into the bedroom. Last spring she had found a nice Pilates studio and enjoyed going for a class whenever she was visiting. Since Willow was so frequently busy, it left her plenty of opportunities. She knew that Judy, the studio owner, would be happy to see her for the first time since last spring.

In fact, Judy was very happy to see Tara. The mid-forties woman and her husband asked the blonde to stay at the studio and have some tea and a visit. They actually drove her back over to Willow’s apartment, saving Tara the bus ride in the cold weather. Both said to give their good wishes to Willow and dropped her at the sidewalk. Tara walked slowly to the door of the apartment building. She had greatly enjoyed her session and it gave her time to think. Some of what she thought about didn’t make her very happy and she tried to put those thoughts from her mind.

Hoping that Willow would be done with her research, Tara smiled at her thoughts of enjoying a fun and relaxing afternoon. She opened the door to hear Willow’s voice. At first she thought the girl was speaking to her but quickly realized that she was on the telephone. Willow’s laughter carried through the small apartment. “I can’t believe you said that!” “No.” “I know did you hear that too?”

Tara closed the door and waited a few seconds, wondering if Willow had heard her. She didn’t want to surprise the redhead by shouting through the apartment. She took the few steps across the small foyer area and leaned on the doorframe of Willow’s office. Willow sat at her desk as if no time had passed since Tara’s departure a few hours ago. The phone was jammed between her shoulder and ear and she was concentrating on her computer screen. Tara watched her with a combination of admiration and sadness. Willow had really accomplished a lot in her time at MIT. At just age 20 she would be one of the youngest and highest honored graduates this May. Her research was well above the level expected for an undergraduate student and she was expected to excel during her Master’s work.

But sometimes Tara worried that her lover worked too hard. This semester in particular, their communication had been more sporadic than ever before. The redhead was frequently distracted during their phone conversation and had trouble remembering even what classes Tara was taking. She couldn’t remember a time when Willow hadn’t had a color-coded schedule worked out for her class and study schedule. In years past, Tara would call and Willow’s first question was how studying for her English test or History paper was going. This semester, Tara felt encouraged if Willow seemed to remember that she was in school at all. She was very loving and sweet on the phone and repeated how much she missed the blonde, but wasn’t responsive to deep conversations.

Willow looked up from her phone conversation and abruptly said that she needed to go and hung up. She stood up, stretching as she walked toward Tara. “How was your Yoga class?”

Tara took a slow breath. “Pilates.”

“Right,” Willow playfully slapped her forehead with her palm. “Dumb busy brain. Pilates. You said Pilates before you went.”

Tara felt warmed by Willow’s smile. “It was a very good class.”

Willow wrapped her arms around Tara’s waist. “Good.” She nuzzled her nose in the blonde’s neck. “I thought we could go out for Greek food? There’s a new restaurant a few blocks away. Ant took me there a few weeks ago and I liked it. I think you will too.”

Tara hugged her lover back and ran her hands up and down the girl’s back. You’re too skinny. “Yes. I need to take a shower first but I thought maybe we could go ice skating this afternoon.”

Willow bounced up and down on the balls of her feet. “Yes. Ice skating definitely.” She leaned in and sniffed before joking telling Tara, “And also shower definitely.” Tara playfully swatted Willow’s bottom. “I need to finish one more test. Do you want to wait to go eat or come back here after lunch?”

Tara’s stomach grumbled and moments later Willow’s did too. The two girls looked at each other and giggled. “I guess that answers the question,” Willow said. Tara nodded and went to take her shower as Willow went back to the computer.

**

They returned to the apartment refreshed from the excellent food and the brisk walk in very cold weather. The brisk walk had turned into a brisk snowball fight and they were still laughing when they walked in the door. Willow started peeling off her wet coat and reached for Tara’s too and they quickly embraced and began kissing passionately. When Tara’s cold fingers hit Willow’s stomach, the redhead yelped and jumped back a step, noting the smirk on Tara’s face. “You can’t take a little cold, Ms. Rosenberg?”

Willow smirked back. “I can but I still need to finish that test so we can go skating. You want to go skating right?”

Tara leaned forward and kissed her lover gently. “Sure, I want to skate,” she agreed. She playfully swatted Willow’s bottom and told her to go finish her work. Once the redhead had returned to work, Tara finished getting more comfortable an took her book to lay down in the bed and read for the few minutes she waited.

Her book was quite engrossing and she didn’t notice the time passing until she looked at the clock which read 2:10. She and Willow had gotten back to the apartment about 12:30 which means that Willow had been working for over an hour and a half. She quietly got up and wandered toward the office, stopping when she again heard Willow’s voice on the phone. The blonde turned and went back to sit on the edge of the bed. She wondered if she should interrupt Willow? Go skating by herself? What would be most likely to get Willow’s attention? To be the most fun? To make them happy? She wanted so badly to enjoy this time together but Willow was all work and no play Willow and she was starting to get very frustrated. She leaned against the headboard and wrapped her arms around her legs, realizing that she was wallowing in her own self pity but unsure how to get out of it or stop. She had so many unanswered questions about Willow. About their relationship. About Willow’s priorities. What was going on with the redhead? Was it just her school work or was there something else?

Willow woke Tara a few hours later by tapping her gently on the shoulder. “Tara? Baby?”

Tara rolled groggily toward Willow’s voice. “Snuggle me.”

Willow smiled and climbed into the bed in front of Tara so that the blonde could wrap her arms around her. “You fell asleep.” She rolled over to face her lover. “You looked so beautiful that I didn’t want to wake you.”

“Missed you,” Tara mumbled.

“Missed you too,” Willow agreed, planting a kiss on Tara’s adorable nose. She snuggled the blonde for a few more minutes. “I made us dinner.” Tara sat up and nodded and Willow went to the kitchen and Willow returned to the bed with soup and sandwiches on a tray. “Chicken noodle and peanut butter and jelly?”

She handed the tray to Tara and slid in beside her to lean on the headboard. Tara took a bite of her sandwich. “You’re nearly a college graduate and you still eat like a little kid.” She smiled fondly at the girl.

Willow began eating the soup and intentionally slurped the noodles off the spoon. “If growing up means not eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, I’ll do nothing of the sort.” Tara laughed, nodding that Willow’s point was taken. “Ant eats the most disgusting things. Easy cheese and olives. Peanut butter and bologna sandwiches for breakfast. Totally gross.”

Tara laughed again, somewhat uneasily but Willow didn’t seem to notice. “I can hardly wait to meet Ant of the amazing brain and questionable diet. Maybe we should finish eating quickly so we can go to your party.”

Willow agreed and they completed their meal, sneaking glances at each other as they finished eating. Once they were done, they both dressed and got ready for the party. Willow stepped behind her lover and wrapped her arms around her waist. “I’m not sure we should go to the party at all.” She fanned her fingers out over the Tara’s hips. “Maybe we should stay in. You know conserve heat?”

Tara giggled and turned in Willow’s arms. “I don’t think it’s going to hurt us to leave the apartment for a few hours.” She draped her arms over Willow’s shoulders and looked her girlfriend up and down, smiling as she did so. Willow wore a pair of tight black jeans with black boots. She wore a green sweater that really set off her eyes. “You look so beautiful, Willow.”

Willow leered at he lover. “I look like nothing compared to you, Tara.” She waved her hand as if unable to find words to describe how fantastic Tara looked in the floor-length brown suede skirt and low cut white blouse.

Tara blushed and leaned in for a gentle kiss. “You still find me attractive after all these years?”

“Hubba hubba!” Willow enthused playfully. Tara laughed and Willow picked up the keys to her car. “After you, my lady.”

As they walked down to the car, Tara could feel her insecurities surfacing. She and Willow had never gone to a party at either of their schools. They’d been out with a few friends for dinner or to watch videos but this would be the most people that they’d visited and she felt very nervous about it. She felt like there were a lot of things running through her head and heart and it was hard to keep them all sorted out these days. The past few days with Willow had been, with some exceptions, wonderful but she couldn’t help wondering what she was missing. They had spent so much time apart in the past four years that it was shocking that they were still together.

In a few short minutes, they pulled up in front of a large house with people and music streaming out through the front door. Tara sat in the car for a few extra seconds getting her breath and Willow walked around to let her in. As she pulled her from the car, Willow placed a kiss on the blonde’s cheek. “You’ll have a great time. I promise.” When she didn’t see Tara smile immediately she added, “If you’re not having a great time in 45 minutes, we’ll go home and watch a video ok?”

Tara nodded and they started up the walk. Willow seemed quite happy and in her element as they began to make their way through the crowd. She apparently knew everyone as people kept stopping her to say hi or happy holidays. A few even wished her a Happy Hanukkah which Tara supposed wasn’t that unusual at MIT. More than one person asked Willow where Ant was or when Ant would be there.

Once inside, the girls quickly found the room where all the coats were stacked on a twin bed and added theirs to the pile. Then they went into the kitchen which was apparently serving as the bar and each got a glass of wine. Neither woman abstained from alcohol but neither liked to indulge in common college-aged drinking fests either. They milled around the party, stopping to visit with some of Willow’s friends and classmates. Tara felt like everyone was nice to her, even if she did feel left out of all the jokes.

After a while, Willow got involved in a debate over quarks or quirks or something and Tara decided to drift off to see what was happening on the other side of the room. Six or eight students sat around a table with shot glasses in front of them. They were circling the table, saying chemical names and then sometimes drinking. It was obviously a drinking game but she couldn’t begin to imagine the rules. “Manganese… Iron… Nickel” went the offerings. When the person playing pronounced Nickel, a great roar went up and that person took a drink.

“It’s like the drinking game sevens but with atomic numbers.” Tara hadn’t realized that Willow had left her conversation and was standing just next and a little behind her. She gave the redhead a confused look. “In sevens the players say numbers without saying a number that has a seven in it or is a multiple of seven. This is like that but the atomic number of the elements.” She pointed at the guy who had just had the drink. “Chad skipped Cobalt which is 27 but forgot about Nickel which is 28 or 4x7.” She smiled. “Or maybe he just wanted to take a drink. I’m not sure he’s forgotten anything since he was in diapers.”She took the blonde’s hand and said. “Why don’t you come over here and say hi to Ty?”

Tara nodded, happy to have the opportunity to visit with anyone she had met before. She knew through Willow that Julie had graduated the year before and moved to the West Coast. Willow wasn’t even sure if Ty and Julie were still in contact.

“Tara!” Ty quickly gave the blonde a hug and stepped back to look at her. “You look more gorgeous every year.”

“Thanks, Ty.” Tara squeezed the other girl’s hand, happy for the flattery as well as having someone to talk to. After a few minutes of listening to Ty and Tara discuss movies, Willow tapped Tara on the shoulder and told her she was going to visit the rest room.

“You know,” Tara said a few minutes later, “I feel like I could use a quick trip to the rest room too.”

She promised to catch up with Ty later and made her way toward a long line. By the time she reached the beginning of the line, she concluded that Willow must have found another bathroom since the girl hadn’t emerged from this one. When Tara did come out of the rest room, she stopped in the kitchen to get a soda for herself and one for Willow and began circling the party to look for her girlfriend.

Rounding a corner, she stopped short as she spotted Willow holding court in front of a group of laughing friends. She looked natural and at-ease as the center of attention and Tara’s heart did a flip.

It flipped the other direction as she took in the girl standing next to her lover. A woman stood next to Willow, very close at her elbow, hanging on her every word and laughing at all the right times. Tara took a few minutes to look at this newcomer to the party. The girl was about 5’10” with long curly black hair. Her eyes were dark enough to sparkle in the light of the party and she wore a pair of tastefully torn jeans, a wide belt, and a midriff top which showed off a toned and tanned stomach. Two thin silver chains were attached to the small ring in her navel and Tara gulped, then looked around to see if anyone had heard her. There you are, she thought. She knew this meeting was coming but hadn’t expected it at the party.

She circled the group surrounding Willow and the mystery woman and came up on Willow’s side. Willow was apparently just finishing a joke. “…whereas the Beauty Therapist uses Max Factor.”

The crowd laughed easily and the dark haired girl followed up on Wilow’s joke. “What's the difference between Max Factor and Quantum Theorist?” She waited a second before delivering the punch line. “Max Factor has models that work.”

After the laughter died down, Tara gently touched Willow’s arm and held out her soda. “I got you a soda, Sweetie.” As she spoke, she looked the other woman in the eye, please to see her at least shift her weight to leave a few inches of space between Willow and herself. The newcomer took a drink from her own cup without taking her eyes off Tara. “You must be Tara,” she said sticking her hand out in a way that made it impossible for Tara to avoid shaking it.

“Yes,” Tara said simply before withdrawing her hand.

Willow looked back and forth between the two women. “Tara, this is Ant. Ant, Tara.”

“Ant,” Tara said, “of course. She of the peanut butter and bologna sandwiches for breakfast.”

“Antoinette Custer,” the dark haired woman explained, again extending her hand.

The crowd around the three women had started to drift off and Tara felt less particular about making a good impression. “Cleopatra was taken?”

Ant laughed at Tara’s joke. “Actually yes.” Tara continued staring at the girl and she continued. “I have a sister named Cleopatra and a brother named Paris. My father is a professor of Classics. My mother--History.”

“How lovely,” Tara said. “Willow’s parents are professors too. It must be so nice to have something in common.”

Willow looked back and forth between the two women as if trying to sort out the tension. “Tara,” she said, turning to face her girlfriend, “this is Ant. She’s the other researcher on my project.”

“Yes,” Tara said, setting down her drink and crossing her arms over her chest. “I know who Ant is. In fact, I think I’ve spoken to her on the phone.”

Willow quirked up her eyebrow. “What? When did you talk to Ant on the phone?”

“I’m going to go get a drink and let you two talk,” Ant finally said and drifted off into the party.

“When did you talk to Ant on the phone?”

Tara attempted to control her tone, not sure if her next words would come out as a scream or a cry. “When I’ve called you late at night.”

Willow reached her hand out toward Tara but stopped when she realized that Tara wasn’t moving hers, that they were still crossed firmly across her chest. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying why does she answer your phone and say that you’re asleep or in the shower? Why do you know what she eats for breakfast?”

“I still don’t know when those things happened,” Willow shouted. She looked around and realized that people were looking at her. “Why are you being like this? This is insane. This is stupid.”

“I knew we’d get there eventually,” Tara shot back. “I’m stupid. You’re a genius and I’m stupid. I don’t even know how to play drinking games with atomic numbers!”

Willow huffed and reached out to take Tara’s elbow and lead her into the hallway. “I’m not saying that you’re stupid. I’m saying that these questions are stupid. I’m saying that this conversation is stupid.”

“Which isn’t at all like denying that what I’m saying is t-t-true!”

“What you’re saying isn’t true!”

“Leave with me.”

“What?”

“Leave with me,” Tara still had her arms crossed over her chest and motioned with her shoulder toward the room that held their coats. “Leave the party. Go to your apartment. Pack a bag and go home. Don’t say goodbye to Ant. Don’t work on your research until after the break.”

“Why?”

“Haven’t you been listening to this conversation?” Tara took a deep breath as she realized that she was screaming and that everyone within 20 feet could hear her. “You’re so busy all the time. It’s school, school, school. Then it’s Ant, Ant, Ant. Go be with me.” She pounded on her chest. “Just me.”

“Nothing is going on with Ant!” Willow looked wildly around the party as she screamed.

“Not yet,” Tara said very calmly.

Willow pursed her lips and crossed her arms over her chest. “First off, she’s not even family. Second off, even if she was interested, I think I could withstand her wiles.” She lowered her voice and whispered, “After all, it’s not like she’s Frank.”

Tara recoiled as if slapped. “Frank? You’re bringing up Frank? Nothing happened and you know it, Willow.”

“I know you said nothing happened,” Willow retorted. She shrugged back in the direction the two women had been standing when she introduced Tara to Ant. “Just like I’m saying that nothing happened with Ant.”

Tara took a deep breath to control her voice. “I’m leaving now. Are you going with me?”

“No. I’m not.” Willow answered before adding on. “Stay with me, Tara.”

Tara turned from the redhead with tears in her eyes. She could barely see to find her coat in the spare bedroom. As she searched the pile, she had only one thought in her mind. She will come get me. As she found her coat and buttoned each button. She will come get me. She made her way to the front door and walked down the steps. With each one she thought, She will come get me.

Willow stood in the hallway watching the spot where Tara had been standing. Tara had left. She left her at a party. She’d be back in a few minutes and they could leave together. They could talk it out. Willow took a few deep breaths. All they each needed was a few minutes to calm down. To be rational. Tara would come back in a minute.

She was startled from her thoughts by Ant tapping her elbow and holding out a drink. “Are you ok?”

Willow shook her head. “Yeah. Fine. Finey McFine.”

“Everyone is dancing.” Ant led Willow back into the heart of the party.

Willow watched the door.

She’ll come back in.

Tara stood in the front yard waiting for Willow.

She will come get me.

JustSkipIt,

I think the heart of this update revolves around Tara's feeling of being out of her element. While that is expected by both of them at the party (the - we'll leave after 45 minutes - line) Tara does not expect to feel this way with Willow. And she does. Frighteningly so.

The white lie about the book is very telling. I think it adds greatly to the insecurities Tara is already experiencing around Willow. Why does Willow lie about not having it? Just to make her happy? Is Willow lying about other things in order to not rock the boat? Like perhaps her school life ...

All Tara hears on the phone is how busy Willow is, so busy that she cannot hold a meaningful conversation with Tara. Yet they go to this party and everyone knows Willow, they know she's jewish, Willow knows how the drinking games are played, she holds court with the party goers - keeping them in stitches with her rapier science wit. From Tara's perspective it seems like Willow is quite the social butterfly with her fellow insect sidekick Ant. A major contrast to the image Tara has in her mind of the overworked, no play, study gal.

And, yes, Ant. Tara's insecurities triple due to her not so benign presence. First, she feels inadequate to Ant physically, but that is a knee jerk reaction to the darker thoughts that fill her mind. Willow knows what Ant eats for breakfast, Ant shares an intelluctual bond with Willow that Tara will never have, they share a social life and a type of home life - Willow showers when Ant is there, Willow sleeps when Ant is there, they share meals. All these little things that Tara should be doing with Willow and she's not. The eccentricities Willow laughs about should be Tara's, but they're not. While there is nothing nefarious going on between Willow and Ant, Tara can see the handwriting on the wall. As far as Ant's family leanings, I think it is telling that towards the end of te chapter Ant coerces Willow back to the party without even asking about Tara - let alone telling Willow to go and find her.

My big question is why does Willow let Tara leave? Willow knows Tara feels the odd man out here - she gives her a 45 minute escape plan. And after 45 minutes Tara is definitely not having fun, but Willow reneges on her promise. Yes, perhaps Tara was overreacting a little, but is Willow so out of touch with her girlfriend that she is blind to Tara's extreme discomfort. Even if her fears are unwarranted, the fact that Tara is that distressed should be reason enough for Willow to leave with her.

Long distance relationships are difficult at best. Long term relationships are ripe with complacency without work. Add a little insecurity and you've got trouble.

Let me just add that I thought that this was very well written and I was deeply touched by it (as if you couldn't tell - all that blathering on only my second post - yikes!). It depressed the hell out of me so you must update before I devour an entire box of Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls.

Great update (and hey, it was a real update unlike what we got from some people *grumble*)

Well after the lightness of the first few parts this story has definitely moved to Angstville.

I can understand Tara feeling insecure. Tara's reaction to thinking Willow had called her stupid shows that she doesn't think she's good enough for Willow and is worried that it's just a matter of time before Willow realises this.

I can also understand Tara's reaction to Ant. For some time now by working with Willow Ant has been sharing something with her that Tara will never be able to. Now she's found out that Ant's been sharing other things with Willow that she should have been able to but hasn't due to them living so far apart. Even if there's nothing going on between Willow and Ant it doesn't change the fact that over the last year Ant has been closer to Willow than Tara has, so it's natural that Tara would feel jealous.

There's not much to say to the ending except, clifhanger much? It's made worse by the fact we're not going to see the resolution of the cliffhanger, unless it appears in a flashback.

Looking forwards to next years story

Wow. Not a happy way to start my morning. But very real and angsty. Talk about needing to get your priorities straight - Willow should read all the previous chapters to remind herself what she's about to lose. This story has gone from cute and sweet to sexy to painful all while staying true to the characters. I just hate that we won't get to see them for another year. All of these chapters could be entire stories themselves - I want to know what happens in the next hour, not the next year.

Not that I'm defending Ant (because I think she's a jerk), but I can understand why she didn't encourage Willow to go after Tara. Willow hasn't made Tara a priority all year, so why should this night be any different? Plus, I suspect ulterior motives - even if she's not interested in Willow romantically, she's pretty possessive of their friendship. And Willow needs to figure out that you don't have to sleep with someone else to be unfaithful to your relationship.

We still don't know what happened with Frank!

Wow great chapter as usual, Debra. But you must be taking evil lessons from watty to end it where you did. Now I'm sad...and Willow's inside waiting for Tara to come back and Tara's outside waiting for Willow to come out. That's so tragic.

Well, damn, I really should be careful what I ask for. Please consider my angst-hound sated. Ouch. Of course, I'm hoping that the second part of my wish if fulfilled soon. But, as you've been taking evil lessons, I suspect we've got a ways to go before everything is happily-ever-after for Willow and Tara.

You continue to do a fantastic job of relating the pitfalls encounted in long-distance relationships. For a woman who claims no personal experience in this area, you've nailed it. Very impressive.

My heart hurts for them: so much left unsaid, so much between them with neither knowing how to find their way back. Between this update and the latest chapter of Coming Back, I've been through an emotional ringer over the past couple of days. By the way, that is in no way meant as a complaint. In fact, it is a compliment of sorts. Only through top-notch writing is the reader enabled to feel the pain. So, I say Brava, Debra :clap :clap :clap Looking forward to the next year in the life of W & T.

Hi Debra - sorry I didn't give fb to your last chapter. :blush

I really love Willow (I've said this before) but even I'm suspicious of her this time! Maybe nothing is going on with this Ant person (from Willow's point of view) but Willow is still hiding stuff from Tara. I also think That Willow was wrong to let Tara leave the party on her own. After all, Tara is Willow's guest and what Willow has done is downright rude.

Poor Tara - I feel really sorry for her. She's visiting a place where she knows virtually no one and Willow leaves her on her own. Being pretty shy myself, I know how that feels! Tara needs to acquire some courage - and quickly!

I get the feeling that Willow will stay at the party, but when she gets home, Tara will be gone. Willow - get a clue girl, that Ant is trying to get into your knickers! :mad

Please prove me wrong and get our girls :wtkiss again.

Watty has gone from HiddenWatson to Watson to Watty. Soon she’ll just be Joanne Smith from Idaho and her phone number will be listed by her avatar.

:sh :sh :sh LOL

The seeds of discontent were sown in the last update with the discussion about schools, Tara's offhand comment about forgetting to tell each other about haircuts and the 'Frank issue.' They had a year to fix things, but it looks like the little things they forgot to tell each other have grown into bigger things. Apart from a shared childhood and love for each other, it feels like they have very little in common. I firmly believe that they are still in love, but love alone doesn't carry a relationship. It needs work, dammit!

It's sad to see how their priorities have split. I understand about Willow's enthusiasm for her research, if you're doing any sort of academic research it's almost a prerequesite to have that level of passion. Nothing is going on with Ant, I don't think Ant has any romantic ambitions for Willow, in her eyes Tara is probably coming across as the clingy girlfriend who doesn't fit into the group. I'm also pretty certain that Willow has been gushing to Ant about how she feels about Tara too, but Tara doesn't know that.

In other words, Willow has grown and blossomed, but Tara wasn't there to see it. It must be the same the other way round, we haven't seen Tara on "home" ground that much. Am I reading too much when I speculate that Tara is probably the one who does the bulk of the traveling? It's telling, who makes the effort to visit who.

Neither and both are at fault, if this makes sense. Willow is too wrapped up in her life that she no longer notices Tara's -- witness the simple yoga / pilates gaffe. Tara has obviously been brooding and her mind is set on not having a good time at the party anyway.
“I’m stupid. You’re a genius and I’m stupid. I don’t even know how to play drinking games with atomic numbers!”

She doesn't want to feel insecure and inferior, but she does. Neither is reading the other, there's so much non-communication going on that it's breaking my heart.

Unless something drastic happens that wakes them up, I see a rocky road up ahead. It feels weird to say this, but I'm enjoying the angst. It's how a relationship is; in real life chances are they'd split up and the most they can hope for is for the friendship to remain. I have the comfort of knowing that on Pens they will end up together, but I'm "the evilest kitten that ever lived in all of evil town" (™justin), and I want to read about the long and difficult road they have to travel on to get to that point.

Oh man.. great update!!

Very angsty.. but it had to happen, I knew it was coming soon. All these years in a long distance relationship? Hell i'd be down right worried if they DIDN'T have a big argument sooner or later! You write angst extremely well.

I loved the scene towards the beginning with Tara waking up and watching willow working away on the computer.. and then the simple good morning kiss. Perfect. Thats so Willow and Tara.. I could picture it so clearly. Its the simple little things like that that really make me smile. After all these years my heart can still flutter for Willow and Tara.. and authors like you are a huge part of that. So thankyou.. really.. I cant imagine all the hours you put into your stories.. but the time that I can sit down here and get lost in all these worlds and have hope for love.. for a few hours.. or a few minutes or even a few seconds. Thats priceless to me.

I cant wait to read more.. of this.. and anything else you might write :)

Oooh, this was good.

In sevens the players say numbers without saying a number that has a seven in it or is a multiple of seven. This is like that but the atomic number of the elements.

I'm so glad you gave us the answer, I would have been scratching my head for hours!

I love the way you write angst, and I am looking forward to see how this one plays out. As Watson said, at least we know they will live happily ever after in the end, but the journey may be a bit rocky, I fear...

Eeep. That's not good... but then again, it feels like it was inevitable, and the course of Willow and Tara's relationship (unless they'd have both gotten everything right first go, which, well, does anyone ever get everything right?) was not to avoid this, but to go through it, and (hopefully!) heal from it, and carry that experience on so they'll be closer in future.

You know what this reminded me of, is 'Candle', Sally's Fruitcake fic - your fic is quite distinct, of course, but it's the same basic personality traits coming into play. Willow gets so absorbed in her work, and so enthusiastic about it, that she can live off her work if she wants to - that can be her whole life for a while, and studying gives her enough satisfaction that she doesn't necessarily miss other things. And Tara, while she's more rounded an observant than Willow, tends to keep things bottled up inside, wanting to enjoy what she has, rather than risk spoiling a good moment by talking about her worries. Neither of them are blameless - and in the end, neither of them are unforgivable, so let's have some forgiveness, huh? I'm just worried that... well, that the next update won't start with "Hey Tara, remember that argument last year, that we got over after a couple of days?" Given how each chapter happens a year apart, it's something of a looming prospect that things go from bad to worse here, and only start really healing after that much time has passed. And that's a long time to be without the warming glow of Willow-love, or Tara-love.

And just apropos of nothing, I was a bit confused initially by them being in Cambridge - I wondered at what point Willow had moved to England, before I remembered that you guys have a Cambridge too... :blush

Me too! Our Cambridge would even fit with the hard-working science-y student thing, but then the weather was cold but not raining, so I knew it wasn't England...

Thank you for tackling a very real situation very honestly. It’s painful to see Willow and Tara’s relationship disintegrate over the last two instalments, which considering there’s about a year in between each update, that’s a long time for uncertainties to be brewing. If it weren’t that this was the Kittenboard, I would seriously question whether Willow and Tara could weather this chasm that just keeps getting wider.

I thought you did an excellent job of portraying a Willow who’s come in to her own, at the top of her game, and innocently intoxicated by a limelight she’s never before experienced. It’s like Willow gets a high from juggling a lot of elements in her life, and that her relationship with Tara is just one of those elements, but not top priority. What matters is the headrush in keeping those elements in the air without crashing, not the quality of those elements (the yoga-Pilates is a good example—she remembered to ask, but couldn’t be bothered with remembering specifics). No wonder Tara thinks what’s going on in her life doesn’t matter to Willow. The slickness with which you wrote Willow in this update was unnerving and I think that helped me grasp just how close she and Tara are to meltdown.

While I don’t think Willow is conscious of her attraction to Ant, I’m in the camp who thinks it’s there, lurking below the surface and that Tara hit the nail on the head when she said ‘not yet, anyway’ to Willow’s denial any existed. I also think Ant is a lot more sussed about her own attraction to Willow or 1) she would have told Willow the occasions when Tara rang and 2) at the party, she would have encouraged Willow to immediately sort things out with Tara.

I think—I know—long -distance relationships like this can work, but I believe that each has to place the other as the most important priority in her life .. above school, above career, above children, above other friends, above everything. People are different as to how they do this, but I do feel it’s fundamental. In the case of Ant, I really think that Tara has every right to ask Willow to stop, think closely about her relationship to Ant, and step away…fast. I don’t think that would be controlling, I don’t think that would be demanding. It’s short-circuiting danger to come. Just because Willow loves Tara, doesn’t mean she’s immune to attraction. It’s what she does with that attraction that counts, and in this case, that also means her attraction to attention, importance and power.

I once read where true compromise happens only when one person is willing to take just a little more of a step toward centre than the other. I don’t know which one it will be, Willow or Tara, but one of them better walk through that door and stand by the side of her lover right about NOW.

Great update.

Well, it started out really cute and lovely but with a sad twist in the end. :( Poor Tara. Poor Willow. I am not ashamed to admit I'd love to see Ant get into an argument with an oncoming freight train. Preferably one loaded with heavy metal slabs. :kdevil

It's nice to see Willow having a chance to live out her smarts, but sad to see that it's not helping Tara and Willow's relationship. :(

and this :
Willow watched the door.

She’ll come back in.

Tara stood in the front yard waiting for Willow.

She will come get me.

Debra, Debra, Debra. It's sooooooooo not easy writing this kind of fic - and I imagine that this update was even harder in some ways because at least in Candle the girls got to have a resolution to all the tension, however tenuous. In this update, the angst just builds and builds and there is no release - for them or us.

I was pretty struck by Tara's musings about having seen Willow mature and become more confident in college. I think that whether she's conscious of it or not, Willow is enjoying being popular and in her element, and she's a little insensitive because of it. Tara has always been a loving constant in her life, so she seems to be taking her WAY for granted.

The other thing is the distance. Other than high school, which has its own structure and rigidity, for the bulk of their relationship they have been long-distance. A long-distance relationship can be painful and challenging even in the best of circumstances. For these two, they seemed like they made it work in the beginning, but after four (three?) years, it's unraveling. I'm not surprised, frankly - so much of college is about finding out who you are as a person that trying to keep a serious relationship alive and growing/thriving is a challenge in the best of times. Also, specifically about Willow, they're always on her turf, which is telling.

As far as the Ant thing, it's written with clues that could go either way. I suspect you're being deliberately ambiguous. I also have a feeling that Willow doesn't go after Tara, and Tara leaves, and they break up, and that next year we'll see them see each other after a year of being broken up. But that's just me - I think that things have gotten so far gone between them that they both need a serious wake-up call if they're going to change and approach things differently.

So well written, so poignant, so angstful, Debra. Great job. Painful but pleasurable read.

Again a hell of a good story from you. Nothing else could be expected. But I have to admit that at first I was hesitant about reading this fic. I'm not much of a shortstory reader. And so I didn't grab the structure of this story. Once I started reading and getting the concept the only thing I can say it's brilliant. Just the idea of telling a story over a few years by giving us only the same time every year is hilarious. Even if I too have to admit that I miss all the time between. But that leaves something to the imagination.

The last update made me very sad. But that's how relationships happen to become if you don't be aware of working on it. I have an understanding for both of them. Sure Willow is to wrapped up in her studies. But she is not responsible for Tara's insecurities. It's Tara who didn't move on and worked on herself to become more self-confident. Sure it's hard with someone that smart but still it is what she has to do. I think Willow's arguments went through the wrong pipe inside Tara because she feels uneven to Willow. She is not stupid but maybe deep inside she feels stupid because she is not as smart as Willow.

Yes, Willow could have acted nicer and stick to her promise to leave if Tara feels uncomfortable after 45 minutes. But I think she really doesn't understand Tara's issues. Because for her Ant is nothing more than a friend. And she doesn't realize the extent of Tara feeling uncomfortable. Not much of an empathetic person. But that's Tara's terrain anyway.

Still I hoped till the end that it wouldn't get that bad. Maybe if they communicated more they could have solved the issues. But now? I also guess Tara is gone when Willow comes back. And I think they don't figure things out til next year at the earliest. Hard to wait for us kittens but surely something that can happen during a long distance relationship. Go on girls you belong together.

Can't wait to read the next update. Thanks for the story anyway.

Re: Menorah Tales - Update 3/31

Postby JustSkipIt » Tue Apr 04, 2006 12:41 pm

quirked_out – Ha ha. I don’t watch Smallville but I’m assuming something angsty must have happened. Sorry to make you cry but I’m glad that the update was effective.

kayaushk – Welcome. :wave I have never seen your sign on name before and I see that this is your second post so welcome to the KB or welcome to leaving lurker status.

I think you are right that part of the problem here is Tara’s being out of her element. It’s hard to go with a partner or even friend to a party where you are likely to know no one. Add in that everyone at the party is some sort of super-genius science nerd and you’ve got a very uncomfortable situation. I think at this party Willow feels much more like a “them” than an us to Tara and Willow does quite a few things wrong as far as making Tara feel comfortable/uncomfortable.

I think that the white lie about the book is telling not because Willow is lying so much but because it’s representative of knowing/not knowing each other. Tara has made an effort to find a present for Willow that she thinks Willow will love and appreciate. For her, a book is a gift of love. I think that Willow has some concept of what a book from Tara means but she doesn’t know how to tell Tara that she picked such a perfect present that Willow has already read it.
The eccentricities Willow laughs about should be Tara's, but they're not.
that’s a great observation. These should all be stories that Willow’s telling about Tara but they’re stories she’s telling to Tara.
I think it is telling that towards the end of te chapter Ant coerces Willow back to the party without even asking about Tara - let alone telling Willow to go and find her.
You’re darn tootin. She has no empathy at all for Willow nor Tara. Think of how Faith would have reacted in this situation (grabbing Willow by the scruff of the neck and tossing her into the front yard perhaps?) Ant just suggests dancing. You’re right that Willow should have taken the 45 minute escape plan but people get proud and stubborn. She’s just been accused of something she is totally not about to cop to and she feels defensive. So she will rebel against it.

so you must update before I devour an entire box of Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls.
Oh no. not little Debbie swiss cake rolls!

Thanks.

Justin
Great update (and hey, it was a real update unlike what we got from some people *grumble*)
Thanks so much. I was thinking about it and including that update, do you realize that six RKT writers (that I can think of) posted story updates in the last few days. Seems that our RKT writing is not distracting us from our other projects…

Tara's reaction to thinking Willow had called her stupid shows that she doesn't think she's good enough for Willow and is worried that it's just a matter of time before Willow realises this.
I think this is a totally typical thing to be said and heard in a fight so I wanted to put it in because I’m sure that it grates on Tara. I mean she’s obviously gifted (we’ll find out more about that in the future; I swear) but not in the same ways that Willow is gifted. So it’s hard on her.

Even if there's nothing going on between Willow and Ant it doesn't change the fact that over the last year Ant has been closer to Willow than Tara has, so it's natural that Tara would feel jealous.
Exactly. And… more to come on that front…

Yes: cliffhanger much! :evil

Thanks.

spells42
There should be a Society for the Prevention of Cliffhangers.... you're cruel, you know?
Buh wah ha ha ha!!! :evil

Thanks.

Grayson – I’m not sure that I’ve seen your name before in my thread (loved your comments in Ubersmut btw) so welcome. :wave

I agree that it’s angsty. I don’t usually write a lot of angst so it was actually fun. Tee hee. I’ll try to update in a reasonable time period.

You make very good observations about Ant. She’s basically reacting to the priority and importance she believes Willow puts on Tara.
And Willow needs to figure out that you don't have to sleep with someone else to be unfaithful to your relationship.
Yes, yes, yes!

Thanks.

Emms
But you must be taking evil lessons from watty to end it where you did.
I’m taking evil lessons from Watty? Maybe I’m giving evil lessons to Watty? Did that occur to you? Tee hee.

Thanks, Emms.

mole
Please consider my angst-hound sated.
Will do but that doesn’t mean that everything will be smoothed out easily.
[qutoe] I suspect we've got a ways to go before everything is happily-ever-after for Willow and Tara.[/quote]A good suspicion.

Thanks re: your comments on long distance relationships. I guess I’m just using my imagination for it.
Between this update and the latest chapter of Coming Back, I've been through an emotional ringer over the past couple of days.
Believe it or not when I read the CB update, I considered waiting to post this one but I decided that they’re separate entities and can stand independently. But certainly Car is the superior angst-mistress as demonstrated by that update.

Thanks so much.

caz – Don’t worry about the late fb. I agree that Willow’s in the wrong regarding letting Tara leave the party. That was stupid and not forward-thinking. As far as hiding stuff, I think she’s mainly self-absorbed rather than having any bad intentions.

I get the feeling that Willow will stay at the party, but when she gets home, Tara will be gone.
That’s a pretty good guess. Of course others might be that Willow will realize she shouldn’t be dancing, turn and go right out and find Tara and apologize or that Tara will come in…

Thanks.

watty – Yes, definitely seeds of discontent. I wasn’t sure whether I put enough of them in there but everyone jumped on them so I felt validated. (It’s all about me, isn’t it?)
Apart from a shared childhood and love for each other, it feels like they have very little in common. I firmly believe that they are still in love, but love alone doesn't carry a relationship. It needs work, dammit!
Absolutely to everything you say here.

Good guesses re: Ant and Willow/Ant about Tara. You’ll find out more in future updates (Oh god. Suddenly I feel like I’m responding to SAI feedback. It’s a flashback).

Absolutely spot on. Tara has traveled more, partially due to a more forgiving class schedule and partially because she feels like she can study while visiting while Willow has a harder time doing so. Tara has certainly grown but they don’t see each other day-to-day so it’s hidden a lot.

Neither and both are at fault, if this makes sense.
Not only does it make sense but I absolutely planned it that way. I went back and forth with my wife getting her to help me plan the fight with my main criteria being “does it seem like one or more to blame than the other?” I really wanted to express that they’re not so much in the wrong as just out of sync with each other. They’ve grown up and apart and they don’t really know each other as much as they need to at this point.

You’ll get to read that road in the next few updates so your evil kitten will be satisfied I hope. Always, thank you.

WillowRTaraM1 – Thanks so much. I’m glad you’re not upset about the angst. Thanks for the compliment. Thanks so much.

Candleshoe – I think that I may have the exact rules of sevens wrong but I don’t play many drinking games (ok, ever). I’m pretty sure those rules are close with the addition of the atomic numbers for physics geniuses. Glad you’re enjoying the angst and thank you.

Artemis
You know what this reminded me of, is 'Candle', Sally's Fruitcake fic
Believe me when I say that’s a huge compliment. Note the last note above. In writing this, I told her that I really wanted to capture the mood and tension she mastered so well without copying her. I’m glad to hear that I managed a passable rendition. Thanks.

Neither of them are blameless - and in the end, neither of them are unforgivable
Very much so.
I'm just worried that... well, that the next update won't start with "Hey Tara, remember that argument last year, that we got over after a couple of days?"
I can absolutely promise that although you made me laugh (again).

Candleshoe/Artemis – except here Campridge is the city where MIT is located rather than a university in itself.

daiailun – Yes, it’s been a long time for their issues to brew and it started long before that too. Thanks so much. I agree that a big issue here is Willow’s success and fame. It’s not that Tara isn’t successful in her own right, we’re on Willow’s home turf.
The slickness with which you wrote Willow in this update was unnerving and I think that helped me grasp just how close she and Tara are to meltdown.
Wow. Thanks.

Absolutely agree with you about Ant and what she should have done. Alas…

I once read where true compromise happens only when one person is willing to take just a little more of a step toward centre than the other.
I like that. I used to do some personal growth workshop stuff and there was one course where the overriding question was “what would I have to give up to create this communication?”

Thanks.

Useful_Oxymoron – I have to agree with you about the tone of the update. Sweet then bittersweet then angsty. Glad to know that was successful. I’m glad you liked the ending. Thanks.

SallyMcFine - Absolutely agreed about the difficulty of writing this. For me I didn’t find this harder because I know in my mind when/how it will be resolved but that doesn’t mean that the reader is in on the solution. As I said above, I bow down to your mastery of angst.

Willow has definitely grown into herself and she’s taking Tara for granted. Part of it is ego and part is just not knowing better and not caring enough to learn. Maybe that’s the problem with meeting your soul mate so early? You don’t actually know how to have a relationship at age 16 even if you fall in love. (ok, maybe at 26 or 36 or 46 either…). And yes, a big part of their problems just plain come from being long distance for so long.

As far as the Ant thing, it's written with clues that could go either way. I suspect you're being deliberately ambiguous.
You’re welcome to read the KB FAQs and you’re welcome to interpret whatever you would like…

Thank you always for your thoughts and feedback.

sacinema
But I have to admit that at first I was hesitant about reading this fic. I'm not much of a shortstory reader.
Interesting. I don’t’ think I had thought of them as short stories but in a way they each are just that. I’m thrilled that you decided to read it and now to feedback.
But that leaves something to the imagination.
And that’s absolutely by plan. I want the reader to have to work at reading this story and filling in the gaps. And honestly, there’s not a lot of wrong interpretations. If you talked to 3 other readers and all told a different story, I would say that all are equally right and wrong (unless you violated something that’s explicitly stated in the story that is).

Re: Tara’s insecurities. Hmmm. Perhaps I’ve given some very selected exercpts of their lives. I would not say that Tara is that insecure in general. I think that in many ways she has grown and matured as much as Willow, perhaps more. It’s just that we see her here on Willow’s home turf. I agree that the “you think I’m stupid” is cliché and common but I also think it’s to be expected. Still hurts though. You’re right that Willow lacks empathy.

You’re welcome and thanks for the feedback.

Debra:

I apologize for the lateness of this post, for what it's worth I've always been a big fan of all your stories and read them constantly. I even have them on my Palm in case I want to have some reading time in between patients at work. And of course that means that you deserve feedback and I haven't left any for this story yet. My bad.

I don't really think I can say anything that hasn't been said yet. But it is painful to see how much they so obviously love each other and how not enough it is at the same time. Relationships, of any kind, are like plants...if you don't water them regularly, clean the leaves, etc...they're bound to waste away. Of course there are some relationships that are like, i don't know, cactuses: they need very little amounts of water to survive and to me W/T relationship has been treated like a cactus. On Willow's part, at least. Taking your significant other for granted is probably the worst thing you can do in a relationship...and Willow is getting really good at that.

I'm not saying that Tara has done everything right. Long-distance relationships are hard and always take a toll. You don't get to spend much time together to share all that "not-so-important information" over the phone or during visits, and it's really easy to just fail to mention the things that happen to you that you don't really wanna share when you have limited communication time and you have to prioritize (and in my opinion this sustained pattern over the years has brought them to a point where they don't really know each other very well). Tara knows this but she's still uncomfortable with the way things have been going on between them lately and hasn't said anything to Willow about this (that we know of) until now...and knowing that she hasn't been capable of it when she should have been (she told Faith she would talk to Willow about this in the previous update, right? so did she ever get to?) may be one of the sources for her insecurity.

You're killing me with the whole Frank thing. What happened?!!?! Well. Whatever happened I'm sure Willow is not really threatened by it but she uses it as some sort of 'ace under her sleeve' when confronted by Tara, probably not even consciously.

Well...like someone said. If this had been my life, the odds are that they would have split up already (so thank God it's not! :) ) I see a bumpy road ahead and I'm loving it already (sucker for angst here!) especially if I remember that this is Pens and there will be a happy ending.

Thanks so much for updating. I hope to see a new chapter posted soon.

Karinna.

G'day, Debra.

Hopefully the feedback levels for this are approaching a more acceptable level for you. I'd hate for you to get discouraged. Because then I'd have to make up my own ending, and .... well, to be honest, it wouldn't be as good, and would probably be pretty weird. :grin

The one problem with having left my feedback until know is that most of the pertinent comments have already been made. But I'll see what I can do, and if I do repeat others words, I apologize.

I liked the detail you provided when describing Willow's apartment. The furniture just screams 'student', and the ever-reproducing swarm of computers does likewise for Willow herself. (Okay, so two is hardly a swarm, but it was fun to say, by gum!)

Other people have noted Willow lack of consideration regarding such things as the fact that she already had the book Tara gave her, but I'm more put out by the fact that she's working on her holidays, which is one of the few times they get to spend together.

Sure, it's just like Willow to get caught up in her own enthusiasm for her work, but she only gets to see Tara a few times a year, right? So, she needs to learn to put her priorities straight. I have to imagine that in a long distance relationship, ignoring your sweetie in favor of work is a honking big example of a Bad Idea!

And why, pray tell, is Willow's facing lighting up at the thought of Ant, but not at the physical presence of Tara? I'm not saying that there's anything going on there, cuz ... well, we're on Pens, but damn, Wills! Pull your act together!

Not that Tara's totally blameless here, I suppose. Her somewhat retiring nature is hindering her here, because otherwise she might have let Willow know how much her behavior was hurting her before things reached critical mass and blew up in there faces. Which is exactly what happened.

Great way to finish, by the way, with the both of them separated and miserable, but too stubborn and proud to be the one to take the first step. This is how rifts begin, I'm afraid. And when I say great, I mean in a genital crushingly painful kind of way.

Cheers, and my complements to the family!
Paul.

well, I can see that willow has growned in her brilliant mind and superego, and in that she has left tara behind but tara has growned in her heart and is a mature person, tara sees things that for willow are blinded, and maybe they are things that willow is pretending not seeing it, because she knows that they belongs to her actual world and in which she is important and has voice and vote. A world where she thinks that tara is there for her no matter what.

Tara knows things that willow has told her without even thinking, Tara knows who Ant is and representing in willow´s life, that´s why she is a little afraid, Ant represents the time that Tara is not there for willow; is the word that Tara can talk to willow; is the seconds, minutes and hours that tara is not there for willow; is the bad and good jokes that Ant shares with willow; the books and homeworks that Ant do with willow, Tara knows that in some way Ant represents the mornings and nights that Ant stays with willow (maybe not in a sexual way, yet), all that time that Tara is not there for her willow, Tara knows all that things and those are things that Willow is pretending not seeing them, why?? just willow can answer that, but maybe Tara already knows that answer, things that willow was trying to hide from her.

Tara knows things that willow doesnt know that tara knows, that´s the advantage for Tara and maybe that´s why the coming bad news for them will be less painful for Tara than for willow, even if the bad news will affect tara´s life more than willow. that will be the "click" that Tara will need to change her view of the world around her.

they are following different ways maybe this the right time to think what way they want to follow, the same for each other or the other side of the road from the other.

Time has separeted them, maybe time can bring them together again in the future.

see you soon

I was hoping to have the update finished and ready to post tonight but I'm not sure. In the meantime, these responses are well overdue.

Kaia – Don’t worry about your lateness. I’ve been just as long replying. I’m glad you enjoy my stories so much. Thank you.

I like your plant analogy here. I agree that Willow has been taking Tara for granted for a while but I will say that we don’t really know what’s been going on with Tara all these years either, as you say.
(and in my opinion this sustained pattern over the years has brought them to a point where they don't really know each other very well)
I think you’re entirely correct here. The question is how do they go about getting to know each other again?

I totally agree about Willow’s ace under her sleeve. I think that it’s one of those things that’s easy to pull out when you’re threatened in a fight. You can pull out this thing that your partner did wrong years ago and toss it in (commonly called “kitchen sinking”).

Thanks so much for your thoughts and comments.

Dianneswillowtree – Lol: pink elephants. A bit of a cliff hanger, I agree. I’ll post an update soon. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Darth Pacula – G’day right back. Lol – making up your own ending. Don’t worry about repeating. I don’t mind re-reading and you never know; you could say something slightly different enough to really make an impact.

I’m glad that you liked the descriptions of Willow’s apartment and her work space. I guess the thing is that even though she’s been at school for a while, she’s still very much a kid. She left for college at 17 and is now 20 so she doesn’t have much adult experience and that’s a big part of her problems. I totally agree that an overriding thing here is Willow’s choice to work on her holiday. There’s no indication that she has any external pressure to perform—just her internal motivation which is unclear.

but damn, Wills! Pull your act together!
Ha ha.

Thanks so much for all your thoughts.

Dianneswillowtree – Thanks so much. I’m glad you’re enjoying them. There is a (mostly) complete index of my stories in the first post of the Elemental story thread (now I believe in completed archive L-Z?)

mag – I’m not sure I’ve seen your login before so welcome to the KB and to my fics. :wave

Wow. I’m absolutely blown away by the insight and wisdom of your comments. You are exactly right that the girls had grown in very different ways: Willow in the head and Tara in the heart. They have lived different lives and because of that, are in different places.

Ant represents the time that Tara is not there for willow; is the word that Tara can talk to willow; is the seconds, minutes and hours that tara is not there for willow; is the bad and good jokes that Ant shares with willow; the books and homeworks that Ant do with willow, Tara knows that in some way Ant represents the mornings and nights that Ant stays with willow (maybe not in a sexual way, yet), all that time that Tara is not there for her willow, Tara knows all that things
Yes. Exactly. Tara can see that Ant “gets” Willow in the times when Tara can’t and even if she didn’t suspect anything was going on, she would still be jealous of the time and closeness. I think you’re right that Willow doesn’t get it at all (as we’ll see in the next update). And also, that you’ll learn just how much Tara is going to change her life.

Time has separeted them, maybe time can bring them together again in the future.
Count on it.

Thanks so very much for your wonderful comments.
