So many. Too many . . .
Just about everybody's mentioned Doppelgangland, and many Willow's "look at those" of her now dramatically more-prominent boobies in VW's outfit. I really love Giles' and Xander's compliance w/ Willow's request!
Of course, Xander and breasts is a category by itself: both of these are w/ Anya. The Prom: "When a guy's looking (at a woman's breasts), it just means his eyes are open." Graduation Day, Pt.1: "Yes, we men like sports. We like to eat of the beef, and we enjoy to look at the bosoms." And of course, in Hush, after Willow points to her chest (meaning that the Gentlemen want hearts), Xander "cups" himself and mouths "Boobs?"
Speaking (heh) of "Hush" there's Anya's one track mind: "All you (Xander) care about are lots of orgasms!" Of Giles' impending guest, Olivia: "An orgasm friend." And when speechless, making up w/ Xander by making an indecent proposal w/ her fingers!
I adore Giles' dry British wit. Its absence has been glaring this year. He's
so funny, all the time, that it's hard to list it all. Therefore, I'll confine myself to a sung Giles classic, from "Restless": in his dream, singing onstage at the Bronze, after Xander and Willow have already been attacked by the First Slayer. Rockin' out: "Xander, help Willow. And try not to bleed on my couch; I just had it steam-cleaned!" I can't even think of this w/o guffawing!
I think that it's interesting that Buffy has always been portrayed as an under-achiever: a good student (and test-taker) when she applies herself, error-prone when she doesn't. Willow: "Carpe diem." Buffy: "Fish of the day?" Willow and Tara, discussing "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Buffy hasn't done the reading, but has "seen the movie." Willow: "The one w/ Charles Laughton?" Buffy: "Was he one of the singing gargoyles?" Love it!
Of course, sometimes it doesn't pay even if Buffy
has done the reading. In "New Moon Rising" threatening the Initiative commander w/ a crossbow: "Take me to Oz, or I'll go all William Burroughs on you." Xander: "You'll bore him to death w/ free prose?"
The imimmitable Willow: from (I think) "Faith, Hope and Trick" to Buffy "Do that thing w/ your mouth that boys like." Buffy shoots Willow a look. "No, no! That other thing you do w/ your mouth! That half-smile you do!" In "Consequences", when Buffy comes to Willow after the accidental killing of the deputy-mayor. Willow starts out all indignant about being ignored by Buffy in favor of Faith: "I've let things fester." And she goes on to berate Buffy "just because I don't kill things." Buffy breaks down crying, and immediately Willow starts berating herself "I'm a bad friend. Bad!" It's a serious moment, yet at the same time, Willow is just so lovable.
That's the insecure Willow. The superior Willow can be funny, too. For example, telling off Faith: "So, you had a tough life. Well boo-hoo!" Or telling off Parker: "I've got your number, Id-Boy. I swear, men have not changed in two million years. [The "Beeranderthals" attack] I meant that rhetorically!"
Oh well, I know I'll think of many more later. BTVS, for 5 years anyway, guaranteed probably at
least 3-4 crack-ups per episode. Here's hoping Season7, w/ a happily restored Willow&Tara, will return "back to the beginning" (ala Joss' words) to laugh-o-riffic times.
