American Pie cast say I Do
Monday, July 21, 2003
By LOUIS B. HOBSON - Calgary Sun
HOLLYWOOD - There will be no honeymoon because the wedding says it all.
Adam Herz insists American Wedding, which opens Aug. 1, is the last time audiences will see the characters he first created in 1999 for American Pie.
American Pie and its 2001 sequel American Pie 2 were both summer blockbusters and the buzz on American Wedding could make it the most successful of the trilogy.
In American Wedding, Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) get married, but not before their old nemesis Steve Stifler (Seann William Scott) throws the entire affair into chaos.
"I know Universal Studios would let us keep doing these movies forever, but I think we've gone as far as we can. This is definitely the end for me. If the studio wants to bring in a new writer and see what he can come up with, that's up to them," says Herz.
SCRIPT IDEAS FROM THE STARS
With their tongues firmly planted in their cheeks, the American Wedding cast members have some suggestions for Herz.
"We could do American Baby and see how Jim and Michelle cope with that event," suggests Hannigan. "Or how about American Mistress. I think that would be my idea of a fun spin-off," says Biggs.
Eddie Kaye Thomas, who plays the intellectual Finch, seducer of Stifler's mom, suggests "perhaps we could have American Wedding 2 where Finch marries Stifler's mom (Jennifer Coolidge) and becomes Stifler's stepdad. That would certainly kill Stifler and the series."
Canadian comic Eugene Levy says he could see the characters being spun off into a National Lampoon Vacation-style series. "I definitely could see an American Christmas. I see real possibilities in getting the gang together to celebrate Jim and Michelle's first Christmas together in suburbia.
"I love working with these talented young actors so much that, given a script as good as American Wedding, I'd be back for a fourth."
CAREER MAKER
American Pie was made for $11 million US and grossed $110 million in its initial release. The entire cast were relative unknowns.
Thomas Ian Nichols, who plays Kevin Myers one of Jim's best men, recalls American Pie literally saved his career. "My agency was about to drop me. I hadn't worked in a while. One of the junior agents agreed to work with me on getting a part before they dumped me and the part she got me was Kevin," says Nichols.
Hannigan was starring as Buffy's best friend, Willow Rosenberg, on TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but American Pie gave her the feature film profile she was seeking.
"I actually said no to each of the first two movies, but my manager talked me into them. I jumped at American Wedding because it was such a hilarious script," says Hannigan, who recalls rushing back and forth between the sets of Buffy and American Pie.
In American Wedding, audiences get to meet Michelle's family, including her sexy sister Cadence played by January Jones. "Of course I'd love for the series to go on at least once more because I had such a great time. Maybe it could be Cadence and Stifler's wedding next," says Jones, who will be seen in Havana Nights the sequel to Dirty Dancing.
DUDE WHERE'S MY SEQUEL
Scott says he was eager to do the two American Pie sequels, but one sequel he won't be in is for Dude Where's My Car? the comedy he did in 2000 with Ashton Kutcher. "I have such a hard time with everything about that movie," says Scott. "I loved the original script, but it changed so much, it's hard for me to accept how the movie turned out."
Still, Scott realizes the comedy has a huge following: "When I was travelling in Europe recently I was shocked to discover how much they love Dude over there." Then there is a certain press release that the producers of Dude at Fox put out saying a sequel was in the works. "They put out that big press release without ever contacting Ashton or me. We had to read about the sequel in the trade papers like everyone else. "That was one huge mistake on their part. That was the final nail in the coffin as far as Ashton and I are concerned."

Serving Up a Slice of Bittersweet Pie

By Holly Aguirre
The "American Pie" franchise is closing shop. Although the trilogy is a proven brand, writer and co-producer Adam Herz insists that "American Wedding" is the final and last installment of the "Pie" series. As a matter of fact, he doesn't even foresee the gross-out, coming-of-age genre to continue.
Numbers should count for something: "American Pie" garnered over $100 million worldwide with "2" topping that, raking in an estimated $145 million. Herz is ready to move on as are most of the cast members, although it is bittersweet.
Says Thomas Ian Nicholas, arguably the nicest character (Kevin Myers) of the four sexually charged boys, "This is our bittersweet symphony. We've put our hearts into this last one because we knew it was our final time all together."
Of those returning, seven of the original principal cast members, most liken their "Pie" experiences to camp.
"It's especially hard because not only are we saying good-bye to these people we have enjoyed working with and have become good friends with, but all the crew members as well. That's one big group hug," adds Seann William Scott.
Scott's brash and abrasive Steve Stifler, a.k.a. the Stifmeister, is probably the most popular in the ensemble; however, he's eager to say good-bye to him at least. "I'm ready to move on. I never thought I would be doing these types of roles when I moved to Hollywood. I thought I'd get a "Raging Bull" or something like that," he explains. Scott stars alongside the Rock in Peter Berg's "The Rundown" which opens nationwide on Sept. 26.
The baby-faced Eddie Kaye Thomas, whose big break came in 1996 in the edgy "Illtown," directed by indie guru Nick Gomez, says he has enjoyed Finch's evolution throughout the trilogy. "Hey, I've gotten to play a scotch-drinking mother seducer to a Tai Chi obsessed, robe-wearing sake swiller. I've had a blast." Thomas, who adds that he has yet to fulfill any "Mrs. Robinson" fantasies of his own, is currently filming Danny Leiner's comedy (Dude, Where's My Car?) "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle."
Jason Biggs says that if Herz kept writing the part of Jim for eternity that he'd be honored to play him. "I am so lucky to have ever been cast in this role. Every day that I keep getting to work as an actor is a happy day for me, even if that means I have to glue my hand to my penis, that's fine by me."
Biggs' turn as the lovable Jim garnered him a surprising amount of critical praise and led to leading roles in "Loser" and "Saving Silverman." He'll be seen later this year in Woody Allen's "Anything Else" which is set to open the Venice Film Festival. 2004 brings us Biggs in Kevin Smith's "Jersey Girl."
The bride-to-be in both "Wedding" and in life, Alyson Hannigan, (she became engaged during the filming of "Pie 3") appears to be a little more anxious about the culmination of the series. She currently has no other roles coming down the pipe and the cancellation of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" brought an end to her six year stint as the quirky Willow Rosenberg.
"This film was quite useful to me," says Hannigan. "It helped me realize what I want and don't want for my wedding. That is going to keep me busy for quite some time."
Ironically, it is the actor who turned down his role without even reading the role, Eugene Levy, (Jim's dad), who thinks the series would do fine to continue. Levy initially turned down the part due to the overt sexual content. Now he doesn't want camp to end. "Come on, I could see "American Christmas" where the families all come back together," says the veteran comedian and only adult with a reoccurring role.
Levy was also thrilled at the addition of Fred Willard to the cast. The two starred together in three films, "Waiting for Guffman," "Best in Show," and "A Mighty Wind." All projects were the collaborative efforts of Levy and Christopher Guest. "I had no idea [the directors] had cast Fred and I was just so pleased when I saw that he'd be filming with us," says Levy.
Sharing scenes with Willard is Nikki Schieler Ziering, another bright addition to the ensemble cast. A former Playboy Playmate, Ziering plays (what else?) a stripper hired to entertain Jim for his last night as a bachelor. Fans of the blonde stunner will be please to know that she does, indeed, disrobe; however, it was done with a bit of style. "Adam (Herz) really wanted us to be strong women who knew what they what they were doing. We weren't victims," Ziering explains.
Ziering's character is a dominatrix police officer who gets to whip Willard with a jockey stick. "Dylan (the director) told me, 'Nikki, you're off camera. You don't have to hit him so hard,'" she adds with a laugh.
Although Tara Reid, Natasha Lyonne, Chris Klein and Mena Suvari are inexplicably absent, they were missed by the cast and director.
"Of course they were missed. In "Pie 2," I brought back everyone, including the monkey. It just got so crazy. All I wanted to do was make a sweet film about a wedding," says Herz.
