San Diego Comic Con 2004 - Amber, SMG

Postby Rally » Sun May 30, 2004 8:37 am

As usual I will be making the pilgrimage to SDCC for a frollicing good time in lovely San Diego. Inkworks has already announced Amber as a guest all three days, see below.

The big news for SD is the announcement of SMG as a guest promoting her film The Grudge, see below.

I am sure there will be many other smaller bit players from Buffy as well, Brian Thompson has been announced. Last year we saw Eliza, Jossy boy, Danny Strong, Robia LaMorte, Groo from Angel, a few others that will remain nameless.

Hope to see some of you there.

You can register the day of the event, I don't recommend that cause you have to get there awfully early. Pre-registration ends on June 5, 10 more dollars and you can pre-register all the way up to June 18 but that's absolutely the last day.

Summer must be around the corner.

Birds are singing, the Des Plaines River is flooding and Rally is off to Comic Con! ;)

Great! I look forward to your report as I do every year.

Have fun everyone. I love SD and wish I could go back sometime.

Hey isn't this the one that Bob has been "banned for life" from? :p

No, Metro Comics is where I was banned for life. Comic Con is cool.

The thing is, though, that I now live closer to Metro Comics and farther away from Comic Con. Oh well...

Metro never seems to have any public signings anymore anyhow. We got a mail order Kate Jackson last month.

At any rate, we are debating over whether or not SMG will sign do a signing. Both Angelina Jolie and Hallie Barrie signed last year, so we might have a slight chance in hell of getting SMG. Hell even Eliza was a mob scene.

It will be fun regardless, as always, we are getting close and in need of a break from this horrid Vegas heat.

Let the countdown begin.

is smg going to be there just one day or all three?

Re: SMG

Postby Rally » Fri Jun 04, 2004 7:10 pm

The big guests are usually only there one day and normally Saturday. Last year Hallie and Angelina were Sat, Eliza was Sunday. But it varies and the really big guests are announced late, depends on who has a movie to promote.

All the comic related guests can be found at the SDCC website, at www.comic-con.org.

This year they are using a new hall in the facility that seats 6000 people so hopefully it will be easier to get in to see the big guns.

Im shocked to hear that SMG will be coming to the comic con! We all know Sarah isnt one for anything like Buffy conventions. I find it sad that she never ever went to ANYTHING buffy fan related like any of the Bronze Beta parties. You have to wonder why she wants to go to comic con? Come one, she's had more movies then this one out, we didnt see her there when scooby doo came out did we? I think after Buffy, this is still all she has. But i would love to go nonetheless!

she isn't going for buffy - she is going to promote her new movie - the grudge - which unlike the scoobie movies doesn't have a big hollywood studio backing it - (isn't it a sam rami - rob tapert thing where the $ is coming from foreign investors?)

actors sign agreements for the films promotion when they contract to do a movie - usually the actors have to do the rounds of the morning and/or late night talkers (ex. KZ Jones had to fly in from spain where she is filming, to do leno last night and hanks will do leno friday to pitch their new movie). This may well have been part of the promo package SMG was contracted to do - the film doesn't have a big studio behind it to get its stars on leno - so they may feel (given SMG's fan base) that comic con is a good place to build a buzz for the film

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we regret to announce that Ms. Gellar will not be able to sign autographs.

Postby Incarnadine » Sat Jul 03, 2004 4:58 pm

Yeah, time constraints, that's the reason.:rolleyes

The only reason she's appearing at all is it was in her contract as part of promoting "The Grudge" (she probably fired her lawyer for missing that little clause).

Someone on another board posted this and even though it was funny I could hear a little ring of truth to it:

"I,m going because i have to, it,s like so wrong.

I don,t have to stay long and i may or may not smile, i haven't decided yet.

If anyone mentions Buffy i reserve the right to leave at that point.

I want hot and cold running praise on tap at all times, any abuse and i leave.

Oh and i want some of those little pink marshmallows with the cherry on top. No cherry and i don,t show up.

God what a star i am. "

Let´s lay off SMG, we have no idea whatsoever why she is not signing. Aly never does cons at all, that does not make her a bitch or star struck either. I happened to be at the premiere of American Wedding in LA last year when we were visiting the Universal Studios. There were a lot of fans wanting autographs, some did a little more than wanting though, they were demanding them. When Jason Biggs entered the scene people started screaming and he looked startled and maybe a little scared and he quickly walked on and I am sure he heard that obnoxious guy sarcastically yelling "nice guy". I would not be surprised if he posted on some board telling us what a primadonna Jason Biggs is. Aly did sign at that premiere and she was very sweet and gracious, but any more of those freaky pushy people who find their way into her dressing room and maybe she´ll stop doing autographs altogether. Who knows, I would not blame her if she did. Who knows what else SMG has to do that day, who knows what kind of people she has on her tail. People can see her in the movie (or not) and if they don´t like her, why would they want her autograph at all, why would it matter if she signs or not.

I won't go so far as to bash her but I do have first hand experience of what she's like. When they were filming Scooby Doo 2 a couple of us made our way to a shoot early and about 2 dozen others had the same idea as a small crowd had gathered. A limo pulled up with SMG and Prinze and they had the security types clear a path and rushed through, I swear they never even looked up. We asked the security types if this was typical and they all said that they never signed autographs or interacted with fans in any way. Our disappointment was alleviated when Cardellini and Lillard showed up, they made a B-Line straight to the fans and started signing and chatting and let a few pics be snapped. Again the security types said this was typical, they really seem to enjoy the attention. As for Aly not doing cons, while she hasn't done any lately she did some cons and other appearances in the early years so while it would be nice to see her do a few more Aly has paid her dues.

I am not really surprised that SMG isn't signing autographs, and I had actually assumed that she wouldn't be from the beginning. If you think about it, it makes sense. How many people are going to be there? How many people may get out of hand? How many people is it going to take to protect her from any people getting out of hand? I just look at it that way. From what I hear, San Diego Comic Con is huge. I would imagine getting mobbed everyday, or even just when on shoots would get sorta tired after time. I have never met SMG, so I can't make any judgements about her actions.

I had no idea until recently how big of a deal this thing is. I can honestly say the only reason I am going is because it is held in San Diego, where I now live. I am looking forward to it, but not to the huge crowds.

We will see how it goes.

does anyone know of any hotels that aren't booked solid?? my plans are sort of last minute, i think i may end up staying in a hostel or something...

Re: re

Hey Alia,

Go to the main website and check under hotels (www.comic-con.org). It looks like they still have some hotels available...book it quick:

www.tphousing.com/reservations/startres.asp?EICode=1075&AttCode=72

Edited...fyi...I was there with my company last year (and I'm there again this year)...amazing venue with soooooo many stars. Concerning autographs...I was very surprised how many big name celebrities signed autographs and were accessible (Hugh Jackman, Quentin Tarentino, Eliza Dushku, etc. (Hugh Jackman even let a fan run up to him in the auditorium when he was presenting, give him a picture she had made of him, and posed for a picture with her)). They just had a limit...like first 200 in line or so. It was actually handled quite well...Some celebrities like Michael Madsen were just walking around the booths, checking out comics and letting people take pictures of him.

Concerning housing...I noticed quite a few people who didn't have rooms ended up partying with and the crashing with people who did. (tho I'd say book rooms now .. that's a last effort kind of thing. Once all the hotel rooms were booked there weren't any hotels available for 20 miles in all directions...)

If the hotels in the immediate area are booked up, just look a little outside. I live in the Claremont Mesa area of San Diego, and would have no trouble picking somebody up. My car is small, so limited space.

Email ktgoddard@nmcsd.med.navy.mil and let me know.

i can't go to comic con this year because my san diego trip is twooo weeks later :( for the wedding of two of my favorite lesbians :) . . .

i agree with katydid0317's comment about smg getting mobbed during a signing and the hugeness of it all - i didn't even go the day angelina was there last year because i was so overwhelmed by the size of the crowd the day *before* - of course, i was one of those coming-from-san-diego folks (katydid, i lived in clairemont mesa last year, actually, and my mother still lives there:)
