I joined up recently and I'm mainly following Amber and Stephen Fry. Is it just me or does it seem as if you're only following one side of a conversation? Is there any way to see the messages that they're replying to?

Only way I know is to click the links if they have 'em.

Yeah that's what I thought. Clicking on the links certainly takes you to some interesting places. Someone who sent a message to Amber led me to Eliza Dushku (or someone saying they're Eliza Dushku) then to Perez Hilton and an interesting picture of Miss Bigot.

It used to be that you could change your account settings to see either no @replies, or just the @replies of people you're following to other people you're following, or finally all @replies by people you're following to anyone they happen to be replying to. As of yesterday however, twitter took away that choice and now you automatically get only the @replies of people you are following to other people you are following, unless they put text in before the part of the tweet that contains the username they are replying to as this does not constitute an @reply but rather a tweet containing someone's username. Alternatively you can still see all @replies made by someone by looking through their timeline (and then following the conversations they are having via @replies by viewing the timeline of the people they are replying to) but this seems *slightly* more stalkerish than having it just appear on your main page or y'know, the concept of following people in the first place. Me = tweet nerd kinda pissed off with this sudden, stupid change in the way the site is run and according to the trending topics, I'm not alone. [/Rant]

That's interesting. My daughters and their friends use twitter to keep in touch, only following each other, and it does seem strange to me that anyone can read what they're talking about. Doesn't bother them at all though.

Most of the random followers are spammers, but sometimes they're folowers of twitter friends who decided to add their friends buddies too.

I'f you're bothered by unknown people following you; there's the option of protecting your updates, anyone wanting to follow you would have your permission first (this will be asked in an email from twitter) and without following you, they can't read your updates.

I'm more curious than bothered about it and I do occassionally have a little peek at who the people I'm following are following. It's very addictive.
