Location Shoot 9/14 - Dawns Trick Or Treat, Part 2

Postby BBOvenGuy » Wed Mar 27, 2002 2:34 am

There was no mistaking where the [i:df47c47dbc]Buffy[/i:df47c47dbc] crew was tonight. You could see the lights as you drove up Fourth Avenue from blocks away, and when you got there, trailers and trucks lined the streets. Once again the houses were all decorated for Halloween - all except a spooky-looking old house that sat on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Fifteenth Street. That's where the [i:df47c47dbc]Buffy[/i:df47c47dbc] crew was.

(Someone later told me that the entire neighborhood had been trying to get the owner of that house to repaint and fix the place up, and now the owner is the one who's laughing, since he's getting paid for his house to look like that. )

The entire neighborhood had turned out to see the shoot. Small children were running in all directions, riding on skateboards and scooters and bicycles, throwing footballs around. I half expected to see hot dog and taco stands being set up. There was a heavy net-community turnout, too. BlueBehrBabe and Janna23 from SMGFan.com were there, the two girls I'd talked to at the construction site shoot in Sylmar last week were there, and the FroggyFrog family showed up later on. It was quite a party scene. The Production Assistants were thrilled. Unfortunately, because of the big crowd and the wider street, we were getting pushed much farther back than last night.

Anyway, the shoot itself... our four characters from last night were back, dressed the same way which means it was supposed to be the same night. The four of them were standing on the sidewalk, looking up at the spooky house. They talk and poke each other, presumably talking about which of them is going to go up to the door. Finally, Dawn bravely and steadily walks up. After a few moments, the others run up as well.

That scene had to be shot about seven or eight times. The director didn't seem happy with the way the three guest stars were running, or the speed they were running, or something like that. Then, when the guest stars were running properly, there were dogs barking or kids yelling or radios playing. It wasn't an easy time.

At last the shot was done, though, and so it was time to move on. Just like yesterday, they seemed to be doing things in sequence, because the next shot was a close-up on Dawn as she walked up to the house. After they did that a couple of times, they went up onto the front porch of the house for some shooting that we couldn't see. We did, however, hear a very distinctive Michelle Trachtenberg yelp at one point. Apparently something was scaring Dawn - but what?

By this time, a lot of the neighborhood kids had wandered off or gone to bed. Those who remained were mostly gathered on the street corner across from the house, where apparently they were all studying how to be Production Assistants - whenever people started to yell "Rolling!" they would all start shushing each other, and whenever people started to yell "Cut!" they would all yell "Cut!" as well. Meanwhile, BlueBehrBabe and the two girls I'd seen in Sylmar were heading off to Santa Monica. They had heard that Sarah and James were shooting at the [i:df47c47dbc]Buffy[/i:df47c47dbc] studio tonight, so they were going to try sneaking a peek through the fence. If they saw anything, I'm sure we'll hear about it soon.

Back to the spooky house - The next shot was back to Amber Tamblyn and the two guys. They came running up onto the porch, the guy with the Sunnydale High jacket first, then the guy with the black jacket, then Amber T. The guy with the black jacket yells something like, "I'm gonna go kung fu on you!" But who was he yelling at? We still couldn't see.

Finally, FroggyDaughter says she thought she could see a man dressed in black and white standing on the porch. On the last take, we hear someone say, "Come in! Come in!" Then there's a break, and everyone comes out from the house. Standing there with Michelle is indeed an older man wearing a white shirt, black pants and a black waistcoat. He reminded me of Martin Landau playing Bela Lugosi in [i:df47c47dbc]Ed Wood[/i:df47c47dbc].

The guy responsible for First Aid on the shoot was doing crowd control near us, and we had an interesting conversation with him. He mentioned that at the beginning of the shoot, while it was still daylight, they had done a shot of the old guy walking up to the house and going inside. Who is he? We don't know.

Another thing the First Aid guy told is the nickname crew members have for [i:df47c47dbc]Buffy[/i:df47c47dbc] - they call the show "Buffy the Weekend Slayer," because so many location shoots are on Friday night and run into Saturday morning.

It was getting late and it looked like the shoot was going to be centered up on the porch out of view, so that was where we called it a night. Still, I'd say this year's Halloween episode should be a fun time, and I'm really looking forward to it now.

Thanks for your ace reporting skills again Bob, I wish I could be there, I'd love to see the show being filmed

My only claim to fame was driving past an old disused quarry when I was kid where they were filming Dr Who!

Oooh! You got to see one of the famous gravel quarries!? I loved those things.

Anyway, here's the report from [b:258f13f8a9]Janna23[/b:258f13f8a9] at SMGFan.com. She saw a few things I didn't:

quote:
Here I am... I stayed long after Bob did and I have two reports one from my friends who went to peek through the fence, and the other from me and a little more of the scene that Dawn had at the house.

My friends gave me a call and said that at the lot the security guard said that they were only doing second unit special effects stuff... but then they did see James Marsters there putting something back into his car. But they saw nothing else.

When I stayed on at the shoot I continued to talk to my new buddy from the crew (who shall remain nameless), and he told me that Sarah was at the studio tonight as well. Maybe they were doing cool Buffy & Spike scenes?

Anyway, I watched Dawn's new "friends" dare her to go up to the spooky porch and bust the pumpkin on the sill. She walks up quietly and stealthily... stands on the porch, raises the pumpkin above her head and just as she is about to crush it, an old creepy guy jumps out from inside the house and scares her, she drops the pumpkin, the "friends" run up, the guy who was kicking the mailbox in previous scene says, "I'm gonna go all kung fu on you!" and then the creepy old guy says for them to come inside that he has a special treat for them.

We left then and they weren't done yet, so I don't know what happens next, sorry.

Location Shoot 9/14 - Dawns Trick Or Treat, Part 2

Postby Unregistered(d) » Wed Mar 27, 2002 2:35 am

Hey kitties!

Well, after a thankfully uneventful 15 hour flight the family de la frog made it back to melbourne today... and I returned to high speed internet access

So I've uploaded the videos my sweety took of the two shoots we visited whilst in LA late last week..

We noticed that the shooting process really involves four stages.. it is:

1) eat at the snack cart
2) wait while people set up things
3) act for no more that 15 seconds
4) reset to the wait position and repeat steps 2 to 4 at least five times but on average 30 times.

To help miller and possibly spuckie, this is the same as:

public void shootScene(Scene scene)
{
Actor actor = new Actor();
actor.eat();
if (actor.isSmoker()) actor.smoke();
while (!actor.goodEnough(scene))
{
actor.wait(scene);
actor.act(scene);
actor.reset(scene);
}
}

erm.. what was that ?... anyhow...

There are some tiny scenes from the reset stage and the waiting stage.. these were taken in the dark from across the street..

The pics are:

1) Michelle and the other Amber resetting to walk back down the street
2) Michelle and the other Amber and the two guys resetting and walking down the street.3) Michelle, waiting, doing a funny twirl cos she's bored
4) The house, on 4th avenue, that the four thrill seekers visit.. they are actually there out the front of the house but you probably can't see them

Hope this gives folks an idea of what a on location shoot looks like.. at night.. inside a small digital camera..

If it looks confusing.. well.. it kinda is..

Extra Love
Froggy

Froggy! I'm glad to see the family got home in one piece.

The clips are great. You can see a lot of the stuff in them - the Halloween decorations, the clothes they were wearing, the equipment rolling around. Thanks for posting them!

They're .zip files... you'll need WinZip or a similar utility to extract them.
