HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - "Buffy the Vampire Slayer (news - Y! TV)" executive producer/showrunner Marti Noxon has signed a three-year, seven-figure overall development deal with 20th Century Fox Television, which produces the show for UPN.


The pact, Noxon's first studio development deal, calls for her to remain with "Buffy" and continue as consulting producer of its "Angel" spinoff, while also developing new comedy and drama series programming for the studio. It's one of the few new overall TV deals to be signed this season as studios continue to seek ways to trim costs.

Noxon joined "Buffy" in 1997 as a staff writer. She was upped to co-producer a year later, supervising producer in 1999 and executive producer/showrunner last fall. During that time she's penned or co-written more than 20 "Buffy" episodes and directed two.

Wow, seems like these people never get any bloody sleep at all. I guess not having a home life is worth it if you get to keep doing the things you love. Go Marti! It's good to see a woman producer doing well in a business that was almost exclusively male for a long time.

Pilot episode:

opening theme changed from cheerful, fast paced theme of children singing merrily, replaced with same theme, played at 1/4 speed, done with cello and woodwind.

Bert leaves Ernie, because, even though Ernie knows what Bert has been through, he still keeps messing with the paperclip collection. Their reconciliation is slow, but poinagntly tender. We, the viewers, learn a lot about the other side of sharing: respecting boundaries.

Prairie Dawn agonizes for too, too long, about "coming back wrong". Culminates in a sobbing breakdown when she confesses to Zoe the Monster that she cannot read a map. Lessons learned: how to recognize various street signs.

The Count struggles with both his OCD and his quest for redemption. Funny bit where he compulsively washes his hands until they are raw and bloody, then lick them clean. Young viewers review counting as he reminisces about the innocents he is responsible for killing.

Big Bird is confronted by the whole Street gang about his kleptomania. Though he denies it, the evidence is obvious. Rather than return the stolen items to Hr. Hooper, he leaves town on a Midnight Train to Georgia. (sing along)

Kermit and Grover discuss their feelings, and how they have dealt with the crippling sense of ennui and depresssion each has had recently. Hijinks ensue.

LOL! I can see that happening though. Actually, Marti has written some good lines, it's just she always manages to undercut them with something incredibly depressing. Or maybe Joss or Jane Espenson write all the funny bits.

LoL! I too found the new and improved Sesame Street parody hilarious. RevisionJohanna that was great it brought tears to my eyes from laughing so much. The irony of the whole thing is Marti probably would do something like this and see nothing wrong with it. I guess the moral of the story is to keep Marti away from lighthearted shows because in the end the darkness will flow.

on the question of buffy continuing past season 7
I know in theroy that most actors "theoretically" sign on for 7 year contracts, but just because trek stops after 7 doesnt mean buffy needs to - even on an american basis therare series that have gone to 11th or 12th series and in the uk series can go on far longer

I suspect if Marti leaves the fold other producers will be brought in to fill her shoes - Buffy is now a highly succesful money making venture - people will fight to get buffy on their resume

I don't think Marti's going to leave, though some people would be glad to see her do less on the show. Also I'm not sure how successful Buffy is - I still think of it as a show with a small but dedicated following and critical praise.

I'm currently wondering myself if maybe BtVS could go on for another three or four seasons - people compare it to the X-files, but it's barely even similar. The X-files relied completely on two things - sexual tension between Mulder and Scully, and the big "are aliens real?" mystery/conspiracy theory. BtVS has far more characters and possibilities, and no big single plot. Though of course if Joss left, then the show would plumet in quality dramatically, I think.

I don't know how the new episodes will do but I know right now Buffy isn't doing great in the ratings. Also as I said before I think 7 seasons is enough, I don't want Buffy going on for several more seasons. Some shows aren't meant to go forever.

Also I really doubt SMG would want to go on over 7th Season since she has been getting movie roles, plus of course Alyson Hannigan.

I think it's hard to decide when a show is done, but I think Joss will know when he's done all he can do. He'll know when it's time to quit. One thing that helps kill shows, I think, is rising costs. The better the show does, the more the actors have to get paid. If the networks can't make enough money to afford the episodes, they have to cancel them. I haven't heard much hype about Buffy actors, like with other shows. So and so signed for a record per episode fee and such. I also agree that X Files was very different. I grew tired of the constant close calls. With Buffy, there's a beginning and an end in each season. It just makes more sense. It doesn't need to resort to those annoying tricks like cliff hangers. It's a great show, and I want to keep watching without that. (I hate cliff hangers!) That's what I tell everyone who will listen to me rant about Buffy. It was a good decision to make the characters grow and change. It makes it seem more real, even though I watch to escape reality.

I really don't like comparing Buffy to X-Files... there are too many damn differences, plot-wise. The structure and approach on each one is quite different, especially in the style of the creator/executive producer.

I think Buffy lends itself to more of an evolutionary approach (note how much things changed from S3 to S5 without a loss in quality), and could easily last a long time if that's what they want to do.

Then again, they may have a more 'wrap things up' approach to S7 and end it there. Who can say?

From an artistic, aesthetic point of view (ie, the one that JW most likely holds) [i:95ee1d6841] Buffy [/i:95ee1d6841] needs to end in Season 7. The show must have an defined ending; otherwise the concept of "arc" loses all meaning.
Now, a Buffy franchise could easily go on. [i:95ee1d6841] Angel [/i:95ee1d6841] has just started hitting its stride, and could carry on quite well. And I imagine that [i:95ee1d6841] Ripper [/i:95ee1d6841] is going to be even better.

Naturally, [i:95ee1d6841] The Willow and Tara Happy Fun Time Hour [/i:95ee1d6841] will be a smash hit, redefining sci-fi dramedy.

On the other hand, from a business standpoint, (ie, the one that the folks shelling out 1+ mil per ep hold), you'd want to run it into the ground, to get the most bang for the buck.

But I think that JW has made his feelings clear, and will stick to his guns on the matter. After all:
