It's Cancelled Show Thursday - Daily Thread

Postby JoanneHillier » Thu Apr 18, 2002 2:20 am

Hopefully there isn't another thread for Thursday, if so free feel to close and transplant this.

So Ally McBeal has finally been cancelled.

If one of Willow/Tara fav. shows was about to be cancelled what do you think they would do?

(Hopefully that wasn't asked before)

[quote:545877f4be][b:545877f4be][i:545877f4be]Quote:[/i:545877f4be][/b:545877f4be]
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - "Ally McBeal" creator David E. Kelley has decided to pull to plug on the FOX dramedy, ending its five year run. The producer told the cast and crew of his decision Wednesday (April 17) afternoon.

The series, which followed the personal and professional life a young lawyer in Boston who is given to flights of fantasy has had a bumpy ride.

Once the darling of the network, rumors of anorexia plagued star Calista Flockhart. The second and third seasons introduced more and more eccentric characters who were given nothing to do, and original series regulars Gil Bellows ("The Agency";) and Courtney Thorne-Smith ("According to Jim";) both left to pursue other projects.

"Ally" was revitalized in its fourth season with the addition of Robert Downey Jr. as the lead character's love interest, Larry Paul. However, Downey's personal problems and numerous arrests, eventually wore out Kelley's patience and he was dropped.

Lisa Nicole Carson, who played Ally's roommate, also left at the end of the fourth season following a brief stint in an institution and admitted problems with substance abuse.

Without Downey, this season has floundered more than ever; bringing in Jon Bon Jovi as a love interest, and giving Ally a daughter haven't helped. Lucy Liu dropped to a recurring role, while James Le Gros left. James Marsden and Julianne Nicholson were added to the cast, only to be dropped a few weeks later.

Following a six-week hiatus, "Ally McBeal" returned on Monday (April 15) with a two-hour episode guest-starring Matthew Perry and adding Christina Ricci to the cast. It still only managed to average a mundane 5.6 rating/9 share.

Kelley, who also serves as executive producer for ABC's legal drama "The Practice," will put his creative energies into another show for FOX this fall. "The Girls Club," will also have a law-based setting and focus on three young women in San Francisco.

So far, only Giancarlo Esposito has been cast.

The season, now series, finale of "Ally McBeal" will air Monday, May 20 at 9 p.m. ET on FOX.

Never really got into AMcB.

Hmmm, I'd say that Willow obsessively collects DVDs of her favourite shows, so she'd just keep re-watching them.

Its a grey rainy day here in Dublin, Ireland, and I'm bloody freezing! But, on the plus side, its Thursday and I get to watch BTVS and Bad Girls tonight - yay!

Well at last, I am still watching the show for two reasons: Elaine/Jane Krakowski and Nelle/Portia De Rossi.

I think I saw them both for a whole minute in last nights episode on Dutch tellie.

I stopped watching after the first season cause it just changed so much. It seems Ally falls in love every episode with someone, and she had "the one" so many times that I don't think anyone cares anymore. I like Portia to.

Ally really has been hit and miss this season, and now whenever I hear of a big guest star I just cringe.

I loved this show, and will miss it. .. but I'd rather see it die a graceful death than linger on much longer.

So, if the finale is coming up so soon, have they had time to write something fitting for an ending or is it just going to end like a regular ep?

I'd love to see RD Jnr come back. I loved his character.

As for our gals, hmmm Xena fans perhaps :D or that Mystery Science Theatre 2000 or whatever it's called. I think they would watch 'Charmed' too, just to rip it to shreds :rollin

Sorry, I've never watches it so I shouldn't say anything, but any show with Shannon Docherty and Alysia Milano doesn't come with great credentials ;)

My wife was a big "Ally" fan. She got me into it.
But after Billy died she said the hell with it, and never watched another episode.
She now will never watch another David E. Kelley show.

I bet as a kid Willow would get panicky at the prospect of one of her shows being canceled.
I never thought of Tara as much of a TV watcher.

Also the show has had so many regulars come and go, yes I stopped watching regularly after first season but I did catch a few episodes and they all had new regulars that seem to come and go. Last year they had some new lawyer and he just seem to be in it for a few episodes to date a transsexual woman and now he isn't around anymore, plus so many other lawyers came and went.

I've been catching older episodes on TV here, though I never watched it when I was in the States. I've liked most of what I've seen, but it could just be that I really like watching Lucy Liu and Portia De Rossi :D

There's another lesbian (a foreigner, like me) in Mokpo! (my southwestern Korean town) Now there are two of us. We're meeting for lunch tomorrow. I don't know anything about her except that she's from L.A. and she got here about two weeks ago. Yay!

I think it's almost time for bed. Goodnight my dear Kittens. To those of you going to bed anytime soon, goodnight and have pleasant dreams. To those of you still up for many more hours - Have a fabulous day! :grin

I used to watch Ally religiously, then went off it. I started to get back into it but I can't really say it's been that good....how can it be when Portia de Rossi only gets about 2 seconds airtime each episode!

I personally don't think there's a lot you can do. Except pout a little like I did when they canceled [i:fc9c66aa0f] China Beach[/i:fc9c66aa0f] too soon.

I think Willow was horribly scarred after they cancelled Punky Brewster, and now she tries not to love TV shows like that ... it only brings pain.

Well, I never cared a flying fig for Ally.

I really have to be able to tolerate the lead character in order to watch a show. That was not the case here.

I'm picky with my TV anyway; the only shows I watch on any sort of regular basis are Buffy, Angel, Farscape (now that it's finally back in Canada), Enterprise, Jeopardy, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and Air Farce.

I'm too busy online to watch anything else, anyway. :D

A cancelled show? You can usually see those coming, so you tend to be prepared for it. Unlike other twists that cn happen...

But I digress. :rolleyes

I watched Ally since its been on air- on & off. Recently I agree its gone totally downhill though I tend to watch it still out of habit! :)
Better for them to cancel it now before it losses even more viewers & becomes too repetitive- The X-Files is another good example.

I hated Ally, then my boyfriend got me into it...I watched the 4th season religiously and I loved what Robert Downey Jr. did for the show. He brought it a life that I had never seen there before. He broke the repetition of, find a man, date him, dump him for no reason, find a man, date him, dump him for no reason, kiss a girl for ratings, find a man, date him, dump him for no reason. When he was kicked off the show because of his "personal problems" I stopped watching. I did watch this season's premiere to see what was going on and I was totally lost with all the new characters that seem to have surfaced out of the blue. I just couldn't get into it...so I am glad that they have finally put that show to rest.

As for Willow and Tara...I agree that Will was a Punky Brewster fan. Tara probably didn't watch much TV but she rejoiced when that stupid show Alf that Donnie used to watch was cancelled.

Have a great Thursday kitties!

I thought alf was kind of funny as a kid, but I always eeeked when he tried to eat the cat...that was very upsetting. Willow probably completely loved Punky Brewster...I remember all those childhood shows now...I was the very biggest Care Bear fan...and, umm, and I liked the Chippettes from Alvin & the Chipmunks...and Gummi Bears...that kind of aired in my youth, and captured me. I can still kind of sing the Gummi bear song...I'm a big fan of anything with an old-fantasy tinge...Well, hopefully Willow & Tara won't lose any favourite shows...and if they do, hopefully they'll be able to get them on DVD...and they'll snuggle up, in the most cuddly and warm way, and watch them together on rainy days...I think I borrowed this fantasy from someone who posted earlier on this thread...sorry for the mental plagiarism...it kind of stuck. But, and this is my own mind wandering...as many will probably be proud of me for...maybe, just maybe...when they're snuggling up watching all their TV goodness...they'll both secretly just be thinking about how much they want to turn off the TV and...well, turn on each other :) And lots of shy, sexy smiles later...which is like Willow/Tara pre-foreplay... they'll forget all about the sadness of losing their favourite show...and they'll just be lost in the warmth of each other...where nothing bad can penetrate. That's my fantasy :) I hope you're all having a great week...The weekend is almost here...one more day...bye kittens...

With Love,
Lily O.

Karzia, my sympathies to you and your family.
I am with Kalita on Ally McBeal - I never could stand the lead character - in fact, every time I tried to watch an episode, I ended up wanting to hurl something at the TV screen. Or just hurl.
I think Tara's favourite show ever was 'My So-Called Life', and she got so emotional over its cancellation that she's never been able to watch a teen drama since....
Have a good day, kitties.

Karzia, my best wishes to you and yours. So sorry.

As for the question...hmm...I dunno really. I doubt that Willow and Tara get too much time to watch TV, considering they're "cool monster fighters" now.

Does anyone remember "Cover Up", with Jon Erik Hexum? My friend at school had such an almighty crush on him, and then he died. Shame.

And there was another programme with Christopher Cazenove and an American woman, Margaret something...and basically it was fun because hey! they weren't from the same country.

And [b:b0b438cf14] then[/b:b0b438cf14] there was that programme that was like [b:b0b438cf14] Bewitched[/b:b0b438cf14] but modern, with the woman out of 7th Heaven in it. And I can't remember what it's called...

Yes. Yes I did watch a lot of shite tv as a youngster. Thank you.

Argh! So many of my favorite shows get cancelled in the first season and it makes me bitter.
Did anyone else hear watch Under Suspicion starring Karen Sillas? It ran for one season maybe 5 years ago and it was an awesome show. It ended the season with the main character being shot and never came back to resolve the story line!!!
I think Willow and Tara would be as bitter as I am if one of their shows got canclled. :)

First off, I'm sorry for your loss Karzia :(

As to Ally McBeal being canceled. *shrug* I've watched since the second season, but I'm very much not heartbroken about the cancellation. I do recommend that any erstwhile fans try to watch if Christina Ricci is on again. She was extremely funny and cute this week. The show has lost a LOT of its lustre for me, so little bright spots are nice.
If only Lucy Liu were back...

First I'm sorry about the death, Karzia...I hope you have a lot of people around you to give you support...and on a much different note, I think your Final Exam avatar-thingie, Ruth, is just so terrible...and really funny :) I didn't notice it before now...oblivious me...

And My So Called Life...they should release that...on DVD...it's not out yet, is it?
