It's "Don't block with your elbows" weeken

Postby La » Fri Apr 19, 2002 9:53 pm

I woke up this morning all sore and bruised. Why? Well, for the past two days in Taekwondo we have been sparring. We wear pads that cover the torso as well as shinpads and forearm pads. But you can't cover everything with pads or you would look more like an ice hockey player and wouldn't be able to move. I'm the oldest person in my class with the lowest belt (red), so I always end up fighting against the higher degree black belts (high school boys -- I'll bet they get a kick out of telling their friends that they beat up the American white girl). I get in a couple good kicks, but usually they whale on me. Now, you're not supposed to block with your elbows, which I have a hard time not doing, you're supposed to block with your forearms. So not only do I have a couple little bruises on my forearms where the pads weren't, but I have beautiful blue elbows. Plus bruises on the tops of my feet from hitting other peoples' elbows. Plus bruises on my knees from knocking knees when you start kicking at the same time and with the same side as the other person. Plus a beautiful bruise on the back of my hand. Not sure where that came from. And a couple on my upper arms, just from getting kicked there. Now, call me crazy, but I kind of like having these bruises. Proof that I like to do taekwondo? I don't know.

So, for the W/T question, I thought I'd get back on a food theme, since we've had a few food-themed W/T questions in the past couple weeks. What food combination would Willow and Tara really like that would make other people say "ew, are you really going to eat that?" Like kimchi pizza (which is really good).

Weird food combinations? Well, for me... ranch dressing is my multi-purposed condiment. Dip french fries in it, steak, chicken (chicken strips or regular whole chicken). It's good on salads. I like to dip my various sandwiches in it. But the best thing... and I can see Willow and Tara doing this...

dipping pizza in ranch dressing.

Very tasty.

I have a friend who does all this with thousand island dressing. Ewww. Now that's just gross. ;)

I have a friend who likes to say, "I'm hungry enough to eat a gas station sandwich." And then he'll laugh hysterically. Of course, this is the same guy that had the munchies so bad he ate ketchup covered tofu, so maybe he's missing a few brain cells.

the munchies can definitely convince you that really strange combinations would be a good idea. i've never been pregnant, but i have a feeling that food cravings while you're pregnant might be similar to having the munchies. chocolate, salty followed by sweet followed by salty, different textures (yogurt then granola, but not together). The weirdest thing I ever did, and I don't recommend it, is dipping chocolate in ranch dressing (ever try that, juri sempai?) a friend and I were sitting at the kitchen table eating celery with some ranch dressing, and there was also some chocolate there, so i figured i'd try it out. not so tasty.

i think tara or willow might go for the dipping chicken in ranch dressing. i'm not sure how i feel about pizza with ranch though. now, pizza and tobasco is a wonderful combination (just had some tonight with a couple of my students), but that's not really that strange. a good easy pull-out-of-the-fridge snack is a stalk of celery with dill sprinkled on it.

At some pizza places here in Canada you get free dipping sauce with your pizza and its usually ranch or garlic. I think they're great. I love dipping chicken and mushroom caps in ranch.

My friends and I always eat tortillas with peanut butter and honey when we have the munchies and sometimes we add white cheese. Its pretty good. I think Willow and tara would approve of this (maybe not so much the cheese though).

You know youre a hard core football fan when you get excited that its NFL Draft weekend. My girlfriend says its the sports equivalent of watching the grass grow. (hehe) Actually, thats pretty accurate, but since my beloved Skins have a new coach and new hope, the draft has become a newsworthy event here. I just hope we spend our money wisely for once.

As for food, I agree about liking chocolate with something salty chocolate covered pretzels come to mind. And yogurt and granola mixed together is actually pretty good theres something about making the yogurt all crunchy-like thats especially satisfying.

I have no idea what W/T would like. They dont talk about food much on Buffy well except for mochas. :)

Heres hoping all the kitties have a fun and safe weekend!

'Don't block with your elbows'- that's usually something you learn pretty quickly after doing it a few times! It's right up there with 'don't breakfall with your elbows or punch the person you're sparring in the fist they are currently punching with'! Pain is a good lesson!:)

As for odd food combinations, has anyone else discovered that McDonalds fries and chocolate sundae actually go quite well together? Strange, yet oddly compelling!

And Willow and Tara, hmmmm. On the show i only seem to recall them eating chicken and pancakes...perhaps some bizzare (and possibly vile) concoction involving them?

never tried McDonald's chocolate shakes with fries, but in high school when we left for lunch, we often went to Wendy's and dipped our fries in the Frosties, so basically the same thing. It is a good combination.

green olives and cream cheese (on bagels, crackers, white bread as a sandwich)

oh! i just thought of something I was doing here when I got tired of always having the same flavors. I was missing oatmeal too, so I took a bowl of rice and poured in some soy milk and added some honey and cinnamon and microwaved it till it was hot. sort of like rice pudding ... or oatmeal ... but not really ...

Oh yeah, it's gotta be French fries dipped in chocolate shake.
Yummy goodness
I know someone who dips chicken nuggets in strawberry shake but quite frankly that's just absurd (!!)

Hmm never tried McDonalds fries and sundaes but Wendy's fries dipped in a Frosty is too yummy for words.
I dont know what W/T would concoct. Ill bet Tara is very a traditional eater, like if it comes from a cookbook then shell try it. Willow on the other hand would probably mix weird foods together. There was this one time I had to try a salad with vegetables (carrots, radish, tomatoes fruit yeah whatever, lettuce, cucumber) and fruits (melon, strawberries, oranges) mixed together with Italian dressed on it. Thats something I think Willow would eat. Tastes awful though.

Edited to add:
weird I was reading La's mind and didn't even know it.

My favorite combo that turns heads is a nice roast beef sandwich topped with brie. Little horseradish, little mustard, lettuce, tomato, perfect sandwich.

I did come into this thread but had to go and throw up at Puff's horrendous concoction of devil's food. Blergh.

I didn't sleep last night. Not a wink. I got to watching old interviews with Alyson Hannigan and got a bit teary. Heh. Not really, but you know, the old stuff, when everything was new, it's just so lovely. And she loves the Brits. Nuff said there then.

Food...food...I'm a big fan of buffalo wings. The hotter the better. As far as sandwiches go, I'm really quite basic. And as long as whatever I have has got cheese on it, then I'm alright. I love cheese. Love it. But I wear the cheese, the cheese does not wear me. Um...or somethin'... ;)

Was it a conscious change from vixen to person of the gay persuasion or more of a natural progression?
Jeez, now I'm really boring myself! Can you tell I had to get up for work at 6am ON A SATURDAY or am I being hard on myself? :eek

I hate to break the flow of the conversation, and I know nothing is more annoying than having to explain a joke, but ``socks on a rooster''?

Anyway, I've always thought she was more bitter than gay ... unless you mean gay in the (homosexual) sense.

Socks on roosters eh? Only Julia would come up with something like that :) Anyhoo, as for "werid food combos" I like mustard on french fries. Dijon ONLY! I am piccy, what can I say? I am at the library at the moment, so i have to keep this fairly short.

I guess you could read that as asshakin'..but that's not what i'm talking about.. So, I was woken up this morning just before 7am and the bed was shaking and not for the fun reasons that it should have been on a saturday morning. About 3 hours north of us there was a 5.1 earthquake outside of Plattsburgh and it was felt out to Buffalo and Boston. I know there's a couple of CA kittens on here that have been through them before and, let me tell you, I don't know how you deal with it. I was freaked the F**k out. It was so weird 'cause you sure as hell don't expect that in upstate NY. My first instinct was to scold my cat for not warning us before hand because aren't animals suppose to act all wiggy when that's going to happen? But, then again, our cats so insane that we wouldn't have known if it was odd behavior anyway..

So, that's my morning... :)

Ok, weird food combinations.. I like bleu cheese and pizza together. I also made really good jamacian stew chicken that had ketchup in the sauce. French fries and shakes are good, but because I stopped eating fast food, I don't indulge in that anymore.. And Jamacian Jerk seasoning does wonders on sweet potatoe fries. Oh and yams w/sticky rice and coconut milk is my favorite malaysian desert.. I think it's called BoBo ChaCha. And Curried Goat and Oxtail stew. I think before I was w/my gf I wouldn't have imagined eating any of that..

Banshee - I think an earthquake would pretty much freak me out too but since I live in Wales it's not likely to happen to me, and as such I would kinda like to experience it, but then that's always the way, wanting something I can't have ... well I could always move I guess.

And all that talk of food has made me hungry. :D

I am not a huge "Charmed" fan, but I will watch if I "light" upon it. On Thursday night, the sisters were pitted against a "Vampire Queen".
Phoebe's husband Cole, who is really "The Source" in diguise (don't ask ), states the following: "Vampires have been banished from the Nether World. It's as if they're part of a whole new network."

I practically fell off my chair laughing at that .

However, it's clear that the writer seems to have forgotten about "Angel" which is, after all, still on the WB .
