This is the thread where you can say anything you like. From Willow and Tara to what you ate this morning. You could ask questions that hopefully people would answer.

Postby snuggle79 » Fri Jul 12, 2002 2:15 pm

nice idea! :D Actually it's 2.11 am in the morning here right now and i'm still awake and not even thinking of going to sleep. Right now lurking to the kitten board and watching some crazy tv-shows is much more interesting...
The thing which is going to my mind is a girl - of course -
She will call me today in the afternoon and i hope we are going to see each other either today or sunday. We are seeing each other a lot since a couple of weeks/months and everytime we meet each other it's a flirty atmosphere and I'm wondering when/if and most of all WHO is going to do/say finally the first step into it. Well, wish me luck... :)

Have a fantastic weekend everyone! :D

oh, i do get you there (i'm back!) ... since i mentioned about this girl on the cafe, i actually go there a lot now. i mean, i do have internet connection here, but i's rather pay than to just see her. oh my god. i'm pathetic. but it's weird, i am not really that crushy over her, i just feel like i want to see her. i mean, really, maybe i just really admire her, minus the romantic attraction...

Hey everybody, I wasnt sure whether i was allowed to post a new topic, if not, feel free to move my post wherever :)
I live in Sydney Australia. And i'm half Australian and half French. My dad is a full blooded french man born in good'ol Paris.
I have never experienced any kind of prejudices from being half french before, until i got to high school.I started to embrace my french background alot more. I became fluent in speaking and writing french and started listening to Edith Piaf and Patricia Kaas, and started watching many french films.
Im now in my final year, and have become extremely aware of how alot people feel about the french. I know alot of it is part sterotype. Ive had people say that my dad is cheating on my mum just cause he's french and cause on tv french men are portrayed to always cheat on their wives, or married women always have affairs with french men and that im a coffee drinking, cigarrette, smoking, frog eating french girl, who bombs the ocean, and kills all the fish. And im like what?
Also i have seen a few US programs that seem to think that french people have bad work ethics and are lazy...dadada...it goes on. I dont get it.
I want to know if that is really how many people think...or from anyone else who has come across the same sort of thing. I mean we had a multi cultural day at my school this year, and for the first time i asked if there could be a french stall, because each country sets up a stall with all their foods and stuff, and after much debating i was allowed to. Then my younger sisters wouldnt participate because they new it wouldnt work.
They new this because i decided to do this after all te name calling and comments started.
So i did it by myself and then no one would buy anything from my stall, and when Mr K my year advisor was saying all the greetings in different languages, he didnt say Bon Jour, i mean maybe its just my school, maybe cause french people are a minority in australia, i dont know, but i hate it, i dont understand it, i love being french, and think their are many things that my culture has to offer.
I spoke to my dad about it, and he said that when he was brought here and he couldnt speak english, he was beaten up many times. Its scary how cruel people can be.
I dont feel ashamed of my culture, but people make me feel like i should be.
If anyone could tell me what they think, cause i dont know where to ask for advice......

Well actually there isn't anything to bear, since the whole point of the daily thread is to have a place where OT can be discussed. If the person who starts the thread asks a question, people can answer it, but they don't have too, they can talk about anything they want (as long as it doesn't go against anything in the FAQ).

And if you start a daily thread, you [b:86f1ce8fea] don't[/b:86f1ce8fea] set guidelines for posting in it, the guidelines have already been setin the FAQ.

Mebe 8 Lisa, the Lesbian Cliche FAQ shows how lesbians and gays get represented on TV and if you read the LGTB news threads it is full of examples of the prejudices against LGBT people, and not only that, it is actually legal to discriminate and treat them unequally in many parts of the world. I am sorry to hear you and your father got a taste of it, prejudice is not a pleasant thing. My mother was not fortunate to say the least to be half German in my country right after WWII.:( Anyway, at least you tried to make yourself seen and heard, don't give up yet, things like just don't go away. Many people would rather tell you there is no problem or to just get over it.

[b:f4f6bd7dbe] Slayer747[/b:f4f6bd7dbe], I shortened the thread title a bit, as it did not fit and was missing MKF. :)

I peeked at the Official Bronze for the first time in months...and boy was it depressing. As I scrolled through page after page of Spuffy this, Spike's new hair that (not to mention the ever popular homosexuals are so damned sensitive posts), it hit me. These people are the average Buffy viewers, aren't they?

I'm just thanking my lucky stars that there are boards like this one where one can have fun and still be thoughtful and discuss things that matter.

Yes it is such a shame that prejudice is rife. People don't even realise that they are pigeon holing so many people. Recently I had a friend come back from Europe and go on about how rude the French were. I emailed her and told her that bad experiences can happen anywhere in the world and that not all French people are rude. I told her that I've been to France many times (I live in Australia) and that each time I have had an absolute ball and loved the people and the culture. She did not change her view and will probably hold on to it for the rest of her life just because one person was not nice. I tried and that's all I can do.
It's an attitude thing and no matter where you go around the world you meet nice people and you meet not so nice people. What I try to do is just enjoy each culture and go with it. How boring would the world be if we were all the same.
You just continue to be proud of your heritage and do what you're doing. Some people will come around but sadly many won't. That's their loss. Just know that there is at least one other Aussie (and I'm sure there are many more) that doesn't feel that way and you can always come to the kitten board to talk to her. Good luck!

You know, I really like to think that we--the people on this board--are the average viewers, and that the other ones (like an aquaintance of mine who honestly believes that BTVS should be less about Willow) are the freaks. I really believe that.

My own brother actually thinks that Angel is a better show than Buffy....any thoughts?

Well, in extremely mild defense of The Bronze (where I sometimes post as "SlayWhat" though not recently), I get the impression that the avg. age of the posters is very young---much younger than here.

There are a few really obnoxious 'phobes, but most of them are disliked by the majority, for they tend to be obnoxious about everything else. (Then there are those who dislike Amber---they are beneath contempt >: )

No, the bigger problem at the Bronze is, as someone above reported, that they "just don't get it." Willow&Tara, that is. What's kind of appalling is that several self-professed lesbians there also "can't wait to see who Willow's new gf will be." :puke Far more common are the non-gay identified who express either the same thing (new gf), or worse W/X or W/O, then finally adding the "what's their problem?" 'tude about gays and/or WTers.

Still, there are a few devoted WTers at the Bronze, mostly ID'd as gay or questioning. It is because of them that I like to post there occassionally. Often young (or questioning later in life), and isolated (at the Bronze, and often in RL as well), these folks need to hear that they're not alone, and have someone (reasonably!) intelligent back them up against the 'phobes and insensitive-types.

I never mention the Kitten there, as I don't want to inadvertently invite trolls. But I hope that by showing these more isolated WTers that they aren't alone I strengthen them in their WT fandom, their identity and/or way of loving . . . and then maybe they'll find their way here. :love

GG [i:58ad934b9c] The consistent report/stereotype I hear about the French is that they'll rip into you if attempt---and fail at---their language there. I've never been to France, but maybe a French or France-frequenting Kitten could refute this?[/i:58ad934b9c] Out

...while I did experience the full range of human behavior (some people were nice, some were jerks, etc.) in France, I really think that, as far as non-native speakers attempting to speak French, the French would much prefer you to attempt to address them in French, rather than just stand in the middle of the sidewalk asking everyone who goes by, "Do you speak English?" My experience was that they appreciate the effort. You [i:f032a982c1] are[/i:f032a982c1] a guest in their country, after all.

Often, I found that, once I opened my mouth, they immediately knew I was an American tourist and spoke to me in English. Of course, asking "Ou est le bureau de change?" ("Where is the change bureau?" which is where you exchanged currencies) [i:f032a982c1] is[/i:f032a982c1] a little bit of a giveaway. But even when I was saying something that was not an obvious tourist question, my accent still gave me away. Except for one instance, the response was friendly. And even when we were ultimately unable to communicate, a heartfelt "merci" for their time anyway seemed to be much appreciated.

I have to say that I have been treated [b:f032a982c1] FAR[/b:f032a982c1] more rudely in my own country than I have ever been treated in another country.

My grandmother spent a lot of time in France, and spoke the language well. She always insisted that the French were a very polite people. My non-Francophone relatives were always careful on their trips to France to be courteous and respectful when dealing with the locals, and found the French to be very courteous in return.

Tulipp, at the moment (and, heck, for most of the past season), I've agreed with your brother - I think Angel has been more upbeat, more interesting and better written for a good while. The season finale seems to have been tossed together a bit hastily, but other than that, I did really enjoy the show.

As for Buffy... this season jumped a whole frickin' school of sharks. Definitely NOT my favourite show anymore.

Ah, good Saturday all. I rarely post in the daily, or at all, but I have to be all quiet because my nephew is napping on my bed. So what does that have to do with me posting, hm, nothing I suppose. Oh well, another sizzler of a day here in the VERY sunny California. We took Chance, the sleeping nephew, over to the lake to look at ducks... quack quack as he says. Wore him out... and me too. I have no other real input for the day. I remember way back when, mid-season 4, I went to the Bronze ONCE. That was all I needed NOT to ever go again. I know that most posters are probably very young, but even my 11 year old sister has more sense than what I read. Such is life.

That's all.

I've never posted in the daily thread before, but i'm going a little post happy cause I'm a bit nervous about tomorrow and since this thread is called "what's on my mind right now" i'm gonna get a bit off my chest.

See, my gf's father is coming to visit us tomorrow (he lives on Long Island and we're in Buffalo). This isn't so much of a big deal cause he's always been civil to me, but the thing is I've had to spend the entire day today going around de-gaying the apartment. Aside from having to hide my books, magazines, and videos...i'm a little perturbed that my gf (of 3 years) decided that it would best for us to do this.

My point-of-view is that the man knows we are together, he knows is daughter is gay, and he should have no illusions about these facts, yet my gf thinks it is perfectly okay for us to allow him to just ignore our relationship so he can continue to live in happy denial land.

I have no idea what my point is here, guess I just needed to rant and this seemed like a good place to do it. Sorry for unloading my baggage here, but i'm just kinda wondering if I should be making a big deal out of this or if I should just go along with it since he's only going to be here for a week and then it'll probably be another year before he comes back.

Anyway, thanx for listening kitties.

Ha, waaaay back in middle school French class, once we learned what "Voulez-vous couchez avec moi, ce soir" meant, we thought it was so funny to run around asking each other. And does anyone remember that old SNL skit about French class. I'm trying really really hard to remember who played the teacher ... for some reason Alec Baldwin is popping into mind, but I'm thinking it wasn't him. But he tried to get the students to speak with a really obnoxious accent, and after that we always used that when telling out teacher we had to go to the bathroom: "Je vouDRAIS allEZ a la SALLE-de-BAIN". Ahhh, language class memories. High school French class - the teacher had the desks set up in a large circle, and we all had assigned seats. The teacher seperated me and my friends cuz we talked too much, so we used the sign language alphabet to sign things to each other, and made up our own code (one symbol per letter) that we wrote notes to each other in all through high school. There's nothing funnier than seeing a teacher all smug and happy that they've caught a note and then opening it to read it and seeing a page full of funny symbols. Heh, of course that's how I felt here when I'd take notes from my students and try to read the Korean. Though pretending you totally understand what it says is funny too. And our German teacher used to play classical music during tests and while we were learning dialogues. So now I hear the 4 seasons and start speaking in German.

edited to fix spelling and add something about GERMAN!

OK, so it's not weekend anymore but I didn't get to a computer before this.
Tuska 2002 Open Air Metal Festival was held here in Helsinki last weekend and I had a great time there! Three days and 21 bands. Machine Head and Bruce Dickinson from across the seas, Marduk, Mustasch and The Crown from Sweden and the rest were Finnish bands. (tuska = pain, agony)

The whole weekend was sunny and warm, almost too hot.I think the best was on Saturday when Sentenced, Ajattara and Nightwish were on one after another. Dickinson was great though I haven't listened to him much before, he was really energetic and knew how to work the audience. Ensiferum did a great cover of Thunderstruck and Trio Niskalaukaus were even heavier live than on albums.

I'd guess the Finnish band names mean nothing to most of people on this board but if anyone wants to take a closer look go to www.tuska-festival.fi and click on the tiny English flag.

Hey my random thought for the day:

Joss is the coolest, I met him last year at San Diego Con... I hope he finds a cool creative way to bring back Tara...

I hope he goes back to San Diego Con this year so I can try to get Tara details out of him!

(I had to re-register since the switch to ezboard but I did find out something while i was busy registering)

My friend just told me he is going back this year! *jumps* Now I will try to pry answers out of him *evil laugh*
