kinda OT on account of not being willow/tara: Spike's Crypt

Postby WiccanBex » Tue Aug 14, 2001 1:27 pm

hey all your oh so helpful kittens who i love so very very much! i bask in your brilliance!

(is that enough grovelling? can there *ever* be enough grovelling?)

anyways... i'm writing an itsy bitsy fic and i'm struggling to remember a word which i'm pretty sure i knew last time i needed to use it in a fic and yet can't actually think of it now.

that great big stone *thing* in spike's crypt... you know, those things that dead people bodies are placed in in the crypt? like a great big stonr coffin in the middle of... an even bigger stone coffin.

i'm have a complete lack of luck where words are concerned today. if anyone understands my crazy ramblings and can find it in them to help me out a little, i would be so completely amazingly absotootingly grateful!

thanx in advance.

Could it be "tomb" ? (Forgive me if I'm dead wrong; english isn't my native language!).
"Mausoleum" also springs to mind....

Where would you go?

Like a sarcophagus only not. And I know I've just spelled that wrongly.

i thought this too... i have it written as "tomb" at the moment. but my thesaurus is telling me that a "tomb", "Mausoleum" and "crypt" are all the same thing.

jeez! why do we have to have so many words for the same thing?

oh well... it's gonna stay "tomb" until someone shows me just how stupid i really am by giving a better word

thanks for the help, concrete

Ah, nice to know I get something right, some of the time.

Although I think it would only qualify for sarcophagus status if it was for someone important.

let's say - just for arguments sake - that it *was* someone important. i mean... what type of unimportant person is gonna get a big ol' crypt all to themselves anyways?

WiccanBex,
Might I suggest for a more mundane person's burial crypt that you might call the large stone container for the body the VAULT and refer to the cover as the CAPSTONE. Both are terms used when discussing crypts and mausoleums. Also an OSSUARY is "a place where bones are laid. e.g. a vault or charnel-house; or an urn for bones."
Hope that helps.
;-)
