Postby MoKa » Fri Feb 15, 2002 5:26 pm

Sorry mods if I'm posting this in the wrong place... maybe it can stay up briefly so folks can read if before it gets lost in the daily thread... thanks.

On the happier note first.. I've just heard tonight - and so far it's unconfirmed - that Portia De Rosi (Nell of Aly McBeal) married her girlfriend yesterday. WTG Po

On the sad note... for the Xena fans out there. News was released earlier tonight that Kevin Smith (Ares)died tonight. He passed away in his sleep in a Chinese hospital. He had been there for a few days after suffering serious head injuries in a fall.
It is a sad loss.

Ooh, yay for Portia! If the rumor's true, congratulations to both of them.

Although I don't know who Kevin Smith was (I have never watched Xena), I'm sorry to hear about his families loss. My friends cousin died not too long ago, and I know it's rough.

It's sad that happy news always comes hand in hand with not-so-happy news.

I know there are a lot of Xena fans on this board, that's why I'm posting this here.

Kevin Smith, the wonderful actor who played Ares, passed away today. The story is here.

Actor Kevin Smith dies after fall in China

16.02.2002

Leading New Zealand actor Kevin Smith has died in a Beijing hospital after he was critically injured in a fall.

His agent, Robert Bruce, confirmed that the 38-year-old actor had died.

"I received a call from Kevin's family to say that he passed away in his sleep.

"It's a shock to us all, and a major shock to the family. They're just trying to come to terms with it all."

Mr Bruce could provide no further details.

Auckland-based Smith was injured in the Chinese capital 10 days ago and doctors treating him were concerned that he would not recover from serious injuries.

The accident occurred on February 6, the day after the actor finished work on a joint US-Chinese production, and as he was preparing to return to NZ.

The hunky local star was then to have headed to movie "boot camp" to prepare for what many believed would be his big break, a role in a Hollywood blockbuster starring Bruce Willis.

The doctor treating Smith told the Herald last night that staff from China's top movie production house, Beijing Film Studio, rushed him to the Beijing Union Hospital after the fall. Smith was believed to have been on a life-support machine before his death.

The doctor, who did not wish to be named, said Smith had suffered a severe injury to his skull and had been in a critical condition.

Acting sources have said he was injured when he fell from a great height, possibly six storeys.

Li Hao, a spokeswoman for one of the companies involved in Warriors of Virtue II, said Smith, who had completed his film contract the day before the fall, had made a big impression.

Smith's wife, Suzanne, and his parents, Geoff and Yvonne, are understood to have been with him.

In addition to his wife, Mr Smith leaves his three children, Oscar, 11, Tyrone, 9, and Willard, 3.

Mr Bruce said last night that the actor's family wanted to thank everyone who had sent messages of love and support.

Smith starred in many New Zealand stage, television and feature films and is perhaps best known for his role as Ares in Xena: Warrior Princess.

His ambitions to break into the American movie market were realised when he scored a role in the $US70 million ($166 million) Bruce Willis action film Man of War, due to start filming in Hawaii next month.

He had leaped at the chance to go to China because the role allowed him to learn from the stuntman who worked on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Smith, Auckland-born but Timaru-raised, got into acting when his wife and childhood sweetheart saw a casting call while he was sidelined by concussion during the rugby season.

He was soon a leading man, happy to laugh at his beefcake image.

"A nicer guy you wouldn't find anywhere," said friend and Comedian Mike King.

Man that really sucks. I liked Kevin Smith, he allways seemed to be having a blast playing Ares. I'll hoist a drink to him. Course since I am taking pain killers for my head it will have to be a Mt. Dew.

On the other hand great to hear about Portia. She has never ceased to surprise me with her acting ability in everything I have ever seen her in.

When I woke up this morning I signed on to read the NZ Herald online hoping to see that he was doing better. BUT there was only news that he was still in critical condition. Earlier this it was announced that he had died. His talent went way beyond playing Ares. Kevin has appeared on many Tv shows and on stage here in NZ. I had planned on going to see Kevin play Dr. Frank N Furter on stage at the end of this year.

This is a very sad day.

So sorry to hear about Kevin Smith. I have never watched Xena, and I don't know who it is, but I understand how it is when you get really attached to an actor/TV character and they feel real to you (duh...this board?). I can only imagine how terrible and crushed I would be if anything would happen to any of the Buffy cast, not just Aly or Amber. So, my condolences to all the Xena fans.

Now, about Portia...WAHOO! I did not even know she was a lesbian. Is that confirmed at least? I have liked her for a long time, and now I have yet another reason. Congrats to her and her beloved! Moka, can I ask where you heard about the nuptuals?

God, I liked Kevin Smith so very much. How terribly sad. My thoughts are with his family and friends - I too will have a drink in his honor, for he brought me many happy moments as Ares and just as himself, a funny, talented and smart performer.

And just to show us that Nature never leaves anything unbalanced, a happy piece of news for Portia... Congratulations to her - and her new bride (lucky bride).*g*

How terrible! I never watched Xena, but still... One question, though. Having such a common name and all, I have to ask. Is this Kevin Smith the same Kevin Smith that is an actor-director of the Jay and Silent Bob series? Regardless, it's a terrible loss
Edited to say: Never mind, I just a saw picture of the late actor. Pardon my mistake.

Truly sucks about the Kevin Smith thing. I really liked his portrayal of Ares...

I'm really happy about the Portia news, though. I've loved her since Sirens, and the fact that she's now married to her girlfriend is just super-cool.

last week Ted Casablanca from e Online posted a "blind Vice" tidbit. Maybe he was talking about Poria and her then gf.

This past weekend, the fashion horse (more of a thoroughbred, I must say) threw an intimate gathering to celebrate her upcoming nuptials.

Oh, that's so sad. Kevin Smith's Ares was one of the best things about Xena, and I gather he was a wonderful, warm person IRL, too.

I'd heard about his accident, but had no idea it was so serious. This is such a shock.

My thoughts are with his loved ones. He'll be missed.

Oh, it's really upsetting to hear about Kevin Smith. I always thought he was great in Hercules and Xena. I thought he was really talented. It's such a shame that this happened just before he was about to have his big Hollywood break too. It must be so awful for his wife and family, I can only imagine. This is so sad.

On a lighter note, congreats to Portia and her new bride. I hope they'll be truly happy.

Hi, first post to the board. I was a very big fan of Xena for the longest time, still am. Sorry to hear about Kevin Smith. It sucks. Sometimes it never quite sinks in that the characters on tv are played by real people until something terrible like this happens.

Glad to hear about Portia, though. A little bit of happiness in my day...

cheers,

Oh! That's sad. He was always such a blast, not only as Ares but also as the Director of the show (the uber-survivorlist) and the alternate Ares, the God of Love.

I'll miss him.

Yes, I am sorry to hear that as well. Kevin Smith was a great god of war on Xena. He seemed down to earth and a very good family man in real-life too. It's very sad.

Oh, this is terrible. I liked Kevin Smith a lot, I thought he was very talented, arguably the strongest member of the Xena ensemble after LL and ROC. Did he die in some stunt gone wrong?

Apparently, there aren't a lot of details yet. MSN NZ News from 2/13 said, "Smith is in China filming a martial arts movie, but the accident didn't happen while he was working.

A combination of the Chinese New Year and language barriers have made it difficult to get any information about the nature and severity of Smith's injuries."

I guess we'll hear more about what happened once things settle down.

For the record, the Kevin Smith who did "Mallrats," "Chasing Amy," "Clerks," and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" is a different person than the Kiwi actor.

I was at the Xena convention in Pasadena this afternoon when a friend told me the news; it was really difficult for me to go back into the auditorium and watch Ted Raimi and Bruce Campbell goofing off on stage.

Renee O'Connor always talked about what a fun person he was to work with, and knowing that he died on her birthday, and that she's here in Pasadena as a guest star at the convention, makes my heart go out as much to her and Lucy Lawless, and everyone who had the pleasure of working with him, as it does to his family. I saw him at a past convention appearance, and he struck me as a genuinely likable and friendly man, very sweet and appreciative of the fans, with a great sense of humor.

He brought so much nuance and life to his role, not only on X:WP but on Hercules and Young Hercules as well. He could be funny, sinister, sexy, evil, and just convincingly enough human . . . or as close to human as a god could be. Kevin created one of the most memorable fantasy TV characters of recent years, and had so much promise. Rest in peace, Kevin.
