Older and Far Away is a quote from...

Postby The Shape » Tue Feb 12, 2002 12:58 pm

Well, maybe a coincidence, but i tought you would like to know. I don't know the rules of this board, so sorry if i'm making something wrong.

"Vow in the Grove", Edward Rodrigues.

"Cathy suddenly wished she was older, and far away. She decided her desires could not be fulfilled on this miserable farm. The party was a nice memory, but it reminded her of times that would never return, especially with her father. She longed to dance, but not in a hoe-down in a barn in the middle of Ohio. She wanted to meet a rich prince in a castle on a tall cliff in the middle of an enchanted forest. She wanted to dance in a fanciful ball, dressed in a flowing gown, with the music of a large orchestra in a magnificent room decorated with fine art. The whole world would watch as she and her handsome prince glided across the floor. It was a lovely fairy tale, but sometimes they came true. More than anything, she wanted to get away from Selville."

And the next ep is called 'As You Were'. So maybe things will be .. as they were. Though that seems too darn obvious for Joss. I am sure they're not going to make it that easy..

Is it really that easy? 'Cause the Rodrigues novel was so easy to find on the Net. Or is 'older and far away' paraphrased from something else much older?

Actually, I think that quote could just as easily apply to Dawn. Or Buffy. Or Xander, but that's a stretch.

Dawn, certainly, is feeling very stressed in her current home environment, with Buffy never around (off at work, patrol, or with Spike), Willow being very apologetic and jumpy around her, and her only mother figure left (Tara) no longer around.

Try it this way: "Dawn suddenly wished she was older, and far away. She decided her desires could not be fulfilled in this miserable house. The party was a nice memory, but it reminded her of times that would never return, especially with her mother..."

Yeah, I think it most strongly applies to Dawn and Buffy. But it's a very cool quote, and my guess is probably not a coincidence, given the general tone and the party reference.

...this really has Dawn written all over it.

Especially the 'wishing' part. Which, clearly, the writers had in mind.

ok, how about this - at the beginning of OAFA, in dawn's class, the teacher asks "if we can come up with things jim lost during his years in shanghai, and things he gained...". maybe that's it. could it be "Empire of the Sun", by J.G. Ballard? this book/movie definitely discusses growing up in a harsh environment, sometimes without parental figures. haven't seen the movie in awhile, and haven't read the book...so this is just a guess.

edited to add: oh yeah, and the main character's name is Jim. and this is because Drew Greenberg said "There’s a pretty big and none-too-subtle hint in tonight’s ep about the title, at least in terms of where it came from... the trick is gonna be going to the source and figuring out what it means and what it refers to... it’ll take some work for anyone interested, but I promise it’ll be worth it. For anyone who’s up for it." so i'm wondering if "older and far away" is in this book...

Heyyyyyyyyyy . . . nice catch, christa! I don't have the time to look into this one, but anyone else know more details about "Empire of the Sun," and the possible relevance?

I think the quote is from Empire of the Sun:

"For all their affection for him, they seemed older and far away."

It's at the end of the book.

edited to add that the reference is to the main character's parents.

When I first herad that ep 14 was titled 2Older and Far Away" I immediately thought of:

"Faraway, So Close"

Film by Wim Wenders

[Sequel to "Wings of Desire"]
Title song by U2:

"...A Vampire, or a Victim, it depends on whose around..."

But the Empire of the Sun reference is there, so I guess thats the inspiration for the title.
