Family is definitely my favorite Tara ep.

Are we going to get a Tara centered ep this season? There are still too many unanswered questions about Tara. I wonder if she will ever be explained.

------------------
Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.
Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Tara: Nobody messes with my girl!

I think this should probably be in the syndicated thread here.

In general: You do not need to add spoiler space if you want to talk about an episode that has already aired in the US. Spoilers for future eps go into the general spoiler thread of course and that has spoiler space in the first post already.

Anyway, Family is a wonderful episode for so many reasons. I too want to know more about Tara, there can never be enough Tara. Especially about her mother, but in all honesty, I think that apart from Buffy we do not know a whole lot more about the background of the other scoobies compared to Tara, less even maybe. We have only seen Willow's mother once for instance and we have heard Xander's parents but never seen them, it's mostly hearsay so to speak, so I feel we got a good deal with Tara. Still more would be very good.

One of my favourite moments from the ep is after the confrontation in the Magic Shop when cousin Beth the Bitch asks Tara if she is happy now and Tara answers with this slow smirky happy smile that spreads across her face. That smile says it all, she is happy alright.

Editing to add: Bad Garfield, I did not even think of that Ruth, but if Hush gets it's own thread, Family is a major W/T ep. Hmmm gonna ask the boss first.

Love this episode! When I first saw it, I got all weak-in-the-knees over the dorm room scene!

Definitely one of my faves. Love them dancing, floating on air at the end. Love the bedtime story at the beginning. Love that all the Scoobs stand up for Tara. Love how it turned the speculation that "Oh, Tara must be evil/a demon" completely on it's head. This one's a definite keeper.

definately one of my fav episodes. was it me or did fx cut the willow line where she stood up for tara in front of tara's creepy family? the first time i saw it it was so upsetting that the scoobys just stared at tara when she told a joke they didnt get. i thought that was pretty mean to do to someone you are trying to be friendly with. but, scoobys arent perfect and the made up for it in the end. tara has come such a long way in her confidence it's great to see willow and the scoobs give her that push in that direction.

Season 5 was definitely my spoiler/spoilt season. But I knew that my two fave eps would be Family and The Body. I don't know how many times I must have read the transcripts and seen screen caps for them before I had actually watched them.

Family still remains one of my all-time fave eps... though right now - I'm getting pretty keen on seeing Vamp Willow in Dopplegangerland.

I guess this may be better off staying in the Different Colored Pens, but if you really liked Family, you may like to see this (you'll have to copy'n'paste the URL to your server because geocities doens't allow direct linkage):

Im sorry if i screwed up posting... YET AGAIN lol

I totally think Family was pivotal, personaly.

The Question it raised to me was, Is Tara Out? ...which then raised the question- did Willow ever "come out" to her parents? Because in Family Beth-the-bitch -cousin (who looked so sweet until she opened her mouth lol) says to Tara about going to UCS, something to the effect of "...living god knows what kind of lifestyle." Which makes me wonder if they know or not.

Discostar I believe she was talking about witchcraft. Beth did say something about when your friends find out, unless you put a spell on them.

HUSH on UPN last night, FAMILY on FX tonight, sigh, does life get any better?

Family was a great ep, but something of a disapointment to me.

Really, I know that I blasheme, but hear me out. We had been building up to this big "Tara - what is she?" question since the spell to Thesspia back last season. We get yummy little bits in "Restless", but in the end what? Her family are a bunch of hicks.

Granted it was an excellent stunt. And I really did like the episode, if for the Tara-centered theme alone. But in a way I also felt robbed.

I remember lying in bed with my wife discussing what Tara actually could be. She could come up with some wild theories.

Not that I am disapointed in how Tara came out, I was expecting something else I guess.

See, and for me, that was the brilliance of the ep. Cause, Tara (and some of the audience) had been led to believe that she was different, a demon, evil...and here it turns out she's just this wonderful, amazingly normal woman. The metaphor worked so well for me. And pulled the rug out from under the Tara-haters. I guess I can see where some people might have felt let down, but I thought it was great.

I just got to see Family last week as they just started showing Season 5 here. The sad thing is that the censors (who are very scissor happy here) cut the scene where Tara gets in bed with Willow but to make matters worse, they cut the entire dance scene so it just ends with Tara and Anya talking :-(.

What I loved about family was the dance. I can't recall 2 women dancing like that on tv, well except for the two girls in that hbo teen prom thing.

Anyway, I loved the way Willow approached Tara, sexy look in her eye, "my dance?"

ahh..

Then the classic w/t touch, elbow to hand. And she leads Tara out to the dance floor and Tara can't take her eyes off Willow.

I was a wee bit disappointed when they were dancing so far apart. You can imagine my joy when they pulled in tight, as tight as two people can be. Sigh, yummy. They still should have kissed but you know it's all good!

oh, every single time I watch this episode, I have forgotten how much I love it! Sooo sweet. I love Amber in this episode, her facial expressions are amazing...from her stuttering apology to Buffy, as she looks at the floor, to the look on her face when Buffy says they're all a family *sigh* then of course there's the dance. This was the first episode of BtVS I ever saw, so it's very special...
jomarch- they cut the dance scene?! That's terrible! and so very stupid...

Thank god I have "Family" on tape from when it aired on WB. I have watched that episode so many times it isn't funny.

I had liked Tara before this episode, but I become totally attached to her character as a result of this episode. I was so proud when Buffy said that the Scoobies were Tara's family. And I was so impressed that Willow was so accepting of Tara doing that spell to "keep them from seeing the demon side of her" that didn't exist. I still cry every time I watch it.

I can't believe FX would CUT any of the lines in this episode.

it kinda made me sad when buffy said that mr. mcclay could take Tara....then i perked up when she said she had to get through her 1st. that made me happy and when the other scoobies minus Willow said that it was no biggy that it was Tara's birthday. that made me mad and sad!

OK, I know it's diabolical and all that, since we are dealing with a truly "classic" episode, but I can't help wondering how the episode would have turned out if Joss had gone with his original "Tara is part woodsprite" idea--

Tara: I, I didn't want you to see. The woodsprite part of me.
Willow: Woodsprite?
Mr. Maclay: Yes. Her mother was a woodsprite. Every now and then she would strip naked and go frolicking in the woods communing with the woodland creatures and the trees.
Willow: So what? I had a boyfriend who was part...well, he didn't exactly frolic, but he would sometimes go into the woods...
Buffy: Yeah! Who cares if she comes home with moss and bark in her hair?
Xander: I know I wouldn't care!
etc
etc
etc

Hee hee, I like your scenario Hemiola, but maybe Willow would say:

Tara: I, I didn't want you to see. The woodsprite part of me.
Willow: Woodsprite?
Mr. Maclay: Yes. Her mother was a woodsprite. Every now and then she would strip naked and go frolicking in the woods communing with the woodland creatures and the trees.
Willow: So what? I had a boyfriend who was part...well, lets just say a naked Tara is a *HUUUUUUUUUGE* improvement.
Buffy: Yeah! Who cares if she comes home with moss and bark in her hair?
Xander: I know I wouldn't care!

Be gentle kitties.
I thought Family was a weak episode, especially for a Joss episode. All of the themes were good and it was clever that Tara thought she was a demon and had something to hide as a way to explore her coming out. However, I thought her family was too cliche hick, and that the ending scene in the magic Box was way too cheesy with everyone standing up with the "me too" sentiment. I wish that same idea could have been expressed in a more clever scene.

I love that dance at the end, even though a certain person I know mocked it when she first saw it. But Deb will be out of traction soon.

That classic touch, trailing fingers down to meet Tara's...oh god it's just lovely. And yes, they should have kissed at the end, and I kind of felt cheated when they didn't. But in retrospect, considering all we've had this season, I think it was right at the time. Besides, it introduced the whole notion of 'floating when happy'. And you know, that particular theme has been um...ahem...fully explored this season. Heh.

THEY REALLY REALLY REALLY SHOULD HAVE KISSED DURING THAT TALK BEFORE THEY DANCED!!!! i was hoping for it and EXPECTED IT, but no. i mean, when yr bf or gf says something THAT sweet and sappy, you give a little sugar in return, right? lol

i dont know, i likedthat they were hicks; BUT they didnt come off THAT hick-ish (?) to me, but you still knew they were hicks, ya knw. I can sort of agree with the "youll have to go through me" bit, but i really wanted Taras brother or dad to try to move Buff or something just so she could beat 'em up. hehe It was just really cliche at the end there, but i thought it worked.

so basically if i could travel back in time and whisper into Joss' ear I'd tell him to think up something better then the "me too" bit and add a kiss at the end (providing it was Joss and not censors)!

discostar, they probably did a lot more sugar-ing than anyone can possibly imagine in the privacy of Willow's room! heh.heh.

ahhhhh, FAMILY... my ever fave episode! i cried buckets during that dance scene! w/c led me to start making the Willow/Tara picture scripts. that was the best-est! just love scenes when the entire cast is around: when Buffy said "we're family" (except Spike,) Tara's fears of being an outsider just flew outa the room. you can see her face lit up, that was priceless! peace

Nobody better talk trash about "Family." I am dead serious, you will regret it.

This is the most beautiful episode ever, in all senses of the word. Amber, ever gorgeous, is startlingly so. Kudos to hair, makeup, and lighting people. I could stare at that woman for all eternity. And of course, her performance was perfectly nuanced throughout.

The resolution of the "Tara's mystery" subplot was brilliant. I don't believe any other outcome would have worked.

And the ending...the floating dance...simply one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I cried for a week the first time I saw this ep, because it was so beautiful I couldn't stand it. I still cry every time I see it.

Unfortunately FX made some unforgiveable cuts. When Mr. Maclay tells Willow that it's none of her business, Willow's sharp "I know that!" says so much. And then she turns back to Tara and is instantly so tender again. It's a wonderful moment, and such great acting by Aly. And then, duh! When Mr. Maclay is leaving the shop, they cut his disgusted "Magick." You have to have that because it contrasts with Willow's saying it during the dance.

Not as vital but nonetheless one of my favorite parts--when Tara and her dad are talking in her room, and he asks her if her friends know about her, they cut the part where she goes, "Y-yes"--with this look on her face that's like mixed fear and defiance--and you're like, oh crud she stuttered, she's totally busted, and then her dad says "Are you lying to me?"

Editing sucks.
