Xita's site would be a good place to start (Lesbian Flicks)
http://glweb.com/lesbianflicks/

Also, this actually would be on topic, so even better

Ha ha. Avoid lesbian cinema! Most of it is, in the words of my favorite platinum-pated puppy, "bloody awful."

The good ones, though: "When Night Is Falling," "Gia," "Fire," "But I'm a Cheerleader," and "Better Than Chocolate." I also rather liked the recent "Chutney Popcorn" and the not-so-recent BBC miniseries of "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit." Cheyrl Dunne's mocumentary "The Watermelon Woman" was pretty cool, if strange. Guin Turner is in it. That's always good clean fun. Good clean naked fun in some parts. And also made in the last year or two, there was a movie made about a couple of different families around Thanksgiving, in one of which is a lesbian couple played by Juliana Marguiles and Kyra Sedgewick. They are SO friggin' adorable together. Seriously, their scenes together... so nice to see actresses just going for it, and not pussyfooting it around the coupleyness. Heh. I said pussyfooting. At any rate, plenty o' smoochieness. And Juliana making with the butch. Heehee. Bow chicka bow bow. I watch it from time to time when I need a lil pick-me-up. Okay, I also watch it just because Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I like to drool over all the food in addition to J&K. Woo! Oh, yeah. Title might help, eh? That one is called "What's Cooking?"

I haven't seen as many gay boy movies, but I did really really enjoy, oh crud, what the crap was it called? Someone help me out. The one with the two young British lads? "Get Real" was it called? Something like that. They were freaking adorable, too.

Well, there's Bound and But I'm A Cheerleader and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit as well as Desert Hearts and a really beautiful Brazilian movie (but chock-FULL of angst) called Joanna or something like that.

Kiss of the Spider Woman touched me deeply, as did The Crying Game and pretty much anything by Pedro Almodovar.

Tilda Swinton is awesome in Female perversions (and in Orlando). There's also Fire (from Deepa Mehta), Butterfly Kiss, Go Fish, The Killing Of Sister George, Gazon Maudit, When Night Is Falling (Patricia Rozema), Emporte-Moi (Lea Pool).

Pascale Bussières is a marvelous actress.

The 4 episodes of the French miniseries Claudine are wonderful. Marie-Hélène Breillat is spectacular. So is Mathilda May (of Lifeforce fame for anglophones) in Devenir Colette.

Well.... I haven't seen many (*snif*), but I'd recommend 'Bound'...

Also, in case you're also interested in animation movies, I would recommend the 'Shoujo Kakumei Utena' movie. It's pretty cool.

A piece of sad news I heard today.
Charlotte Coleman, who starred in `Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit` died last Wednesday after suffering a massive asthma attack. She was 33 years old.

Does anyone remember her from the kids show `Educating Marmalade`?

I have some info about a few movies on my site here in case you wanna stop by. It's not as complete at Xita's site or anything, but i'm (slowly) making pages for all of the recent films I can find, plus upcoming films, plus some short films no-one has ever heard of.
So it might help

I swear to God, Zahir, I am not judging you, okay? I just want to offer another way of looking at things. It seemed very clear to me that the character of Dil in The Crying Game was a transsexual and that therefore, despite the fact that she had a penis, her relationship with Fergus was actually a straight one. Not that that doesn't make the movie of interest to the LGBTQ population (or anyone else, it's an excellent film), but strictly speaking it's not about a "gay couple."quote:

Hi, I'm new here, just found the board actually and have been lurking for a few days...everyone seems so nice here...like home...but to get to the question...I just had to answer this...

One of the most realistic "lesbian" films of all time, I believe, is Ingmar Bergman's (Sweedish film director) "Persona". It is such a moving and true tale and it has to be one of my favourite movies ever...if not favourite...most of his movies are controversial but her deals with many real topics, most important in a lot of his movies is the relationship between women, whether in lover, sister, mother/daughter. But they are brilliant and if you can stand to watch a black and whit movie with subtitles...do try to see Persona...

Oh and for the Kevin Smith lover in me...Chasing Amy...to me it is also a very true tale...

Heh, I came here to mention "Chasing Amy" when I saw somebody already did.

Anyway, it was criticized by parts of the lesbian community because it showed a woman in a lesbian relationship falling love with a man...I don´t think Willow fans find that to disturbing, and it´s a very funny movie (as are all Kevin Smith films).

If you can find them, which I don't know since they were originally cable movies, I'd look out for:

If These Walls Could Talk Part 2 (originally on HBO I think)
The Truth About Jane (Lifetime)

Both are really good.

As for other movies, I'd recommend Gia, But I'm a Cheerleader, and Better Than Chocolate.

There is a Claudine series? Is there anywhere I can purchase that? I am a TOTAL Colette addict and would stop just before killing (maybe) for a copy of the series and any other media about Colette.......oh my, my heart is racing, I just HAVE to have this (Even though I don't speak French)

high art. one of my top three movies, along with lola rent and tom et lola.

erm... i don't know, most lesbian movies are crap. i feel bad about saying that, but unfortunately, it's generally true. i liked better than chocolate though... and fire, which was banned in india for some time.

Well, one that I like is a made-for-tv movie that airs on Lifetime T.V. called The Truth About Jane. It talks about what it's like to fall in love with a girl, and "come out" to your parents at 16 (or maybe it's 15). Don't want to give away to much, but I think some of the high-school age kittens could maybe relate.

------------------
Willow: Maybe, maybe that way.
Tara: We looked that way. And this way, and the other way. She's not out here.
Willow: Where would you go? If you felt lost and alone? Where would you go?
Tara: To you.

I'm also new. And I agree with you ''Persona'' is a great film. I don't know if I would say is beautiful, it is very intense. For those who has seen it: It tells the story of a famous actress who uses a young nurse to prepare herself for her next role as a nurse. It is a excelent film and beautiful shot.
